Still on my first time completing Dracula so maybe there's more info later, but honestly my favorite thing about Quincy so far is that he's ??? just here?? For no reason??

Everyone else has some kind of background. Arthur is a young lord who recently inherited his title. Jack runs an asylum. Johnathan is a newbie solicitor. Mina is from a background of moderate means and has been teaching herself solicitor's assistant type skills because she married Johnathan. Van Helsing is a professor/doctor/lawyer from Amsterdam.

And then there's Quincy! Quincy's profession is "Visiting American." His background is "From Texas."

Where in Texas? What does he do? Why is he in England?? How long has he been here???

Unimportant

He seems to spend most of his time conducting the very important business of hanging out with Arthur. At this point I'm half convinced Arthur went on some rich lordling sight-seeing trip to Texas, where he met Quincy and brought him home, like a guy who takes a wild animal from its natural habitat in a foreign country and keeps it as an exotic pet.

It's everyone's favorite vampire slaying cowboy!! 🤠 I finished reading Dracula (1897) the other day, and no one’s surprised - he was my favorite while reading. I understand turning down the Asylum Doctor, but Lucy was absolutely off her gourd when she rejected Quincey P. Morris. What a man. Mr. Texas himself. Here's how I imagined him while reading. (Also there’s no way to tell from these drawings, but he is supposed to be the shortest out of all the guys 🙃)

I may draw more Dracula characters based on how I envisioned them if I have time! I hope all of you have a great new year!

The thing that kills me about the Oct 11th entry with Mina insisting that should she turn into a vampire, she wants the others to kill her, is not just that Jonathan does not promise to do that, but that the way we hear Seward describe the scene—Quincy promising first, Jonathan brokenly asking if he has to and hesitating, the way we know about Jonathan’s private holy vow to Mina in his journal—is that I wonder if Jonathan is drawing his line in the sand.

He’s already made up his mind about what he will do if Mina turns, and now with Mina making the suitor squad promise to kill her, I wonder if now his fear and intention has subtly shifted.

You can almost hear it in that scene as Seward is describing Jonathan’s body language, but as soon as Quincy steps up to make his vow, I can almost sense the shift radiating off Jonathan.

He now has to contend with not only Dracula, but if it comes down to it, also against everyone else there, because he cannot allow Mina to come to harm, by any hand, especially not his own.

I think he was re-evaluating his priorities and loyalties. Yes, he is friends with all these people and loves them and wants them to work together to defeat Dracula and save Mina, but now he has resolved to the fact that there is a possibility of a last stand of “us” (him and Mina) vs. “them” (suitor squad), even if it’s not what Mina wants, he would do anything to keep her safe.

And if you follow the subtext that Jonathan was bit too, he knows he’s on limited time as well at this point, if he even remembers being bit, but regardless would let Mina turn him if he didn’t remember. He knows killing her would not save him like she thinks it would, besides the fact that doing so would destroy him. He would rather be rest assured in the damnation of his own soul than have it utterly destroyed in the act of ending Mina’s life. I don’t think he could go on, and I think he would find it useless regardless, because he would rather die than kill Mina.

And he would rather harm everyone else than let anymore harm come to Mina, even if that means he has to cut down those nearest to him if it means saving her.

When he promised to himself to let himself become undead with her, he’s not only damning himself and Mina, but the whole of London and beyond. And if he’s willing to let the world burn for Mina, I’m willing to bet he’d let his friends burn too.

He now has an ulterior motive and while everyone else will be keeping a close eye on Mina, he will be keeping a close eye on everyone else, because he can no longer trust them not to follow through on their promise to her.

He doesn’t promise.

He won’t kill her.

And you’ll have to go through him if you want to try.

a family does not need to be a husband a wife 2.5 kids and a white picket fence. A family can instead be a solicitor unable to pick up on context clues who spends every waking moment chugging his “love my wife” juice, his wife who has recently begun the process of becoming a vampire but has not let that stop her from being a genius at making connections and compiling written and recorded accounts, her (chosen) brother who is a newly minted lord who had to stab his fiancé in the heart in her coffin in the middle of the night because she was turned into a vampire, a doctor running an insane asylum who lets his star live-animal-eating-patient loose just to see what he’ll do, a doctor from amsterdam who was supposed to be here for like two days but possesses an unusually vast knowledge of vampires and vampirism, and a cowboy from texas. and they’ve all recently taken up vampire hunting as a hobby. and they all gathered together like a week ago and they would all literally kill and die for each other. and they are so valid.

I desperately wish that Dracula included a diary from Dracula himself, so that we could have had his reaction from when he thought he was being so sneaky, and then a cowboy meandered outside and shot him in the ass.

september 30th

quincy morris, the absolute king, gets solidly rejected by a woman, finds out she also rejected one of his friends, then finds out she got engaged to his other friend after rejecting him, and immediately writes to the friend she is now engaged to in order to set up what i can only imagine will be the greatest bisexual foursome east of the mississippi

I actually don't think I'm going to have time for drawing more dracula stuff anytime soon, what with all my comms and stuff, but here's another drawing from yesterday.

I understand that his death was a compliment to his character, but what if I LOVE HIM???? What about that huh??????
