Rewriting the Gaang in LOK

Basically how I would have written the adult Gaang. Pretend the comics as they are don't exist.

Katara: Breaks up with Aang sometime post-finale to do some soul-searching. Travels the world on her own and sees how people are struggling after the war. After talking (beating) some sense into a few government officials, she realizes that the best way to help people post-war is through politics. She becomes an (unofficial) ambassador, helping and negotiating aid for small villages that tend to get overlooked and does this for a number of years. She joins up with Zuko and Aang after they found the United Republic of Nations and becomes Councilwoman Katara, representative of the Southern Water Tribe. She eventually gets voted chairwoman due to her passion to improve the lives of the citizens (and because her fellow council members are too scared to vote against her). She heals on the side when she needs to, but only out of obligation since she can't stand to see people suffer; she puts much more effort into getting raising funds for a hospital full of healers. A few years later, Haru moves to Republic City and is just as awestruck by her as he was the day they met (the pornstache has been removed by divine intervention). They meet up a couple of times; for drinks after work, walks around the city, and they even attend a few galas together. They eventually start dating and get married two years later. They have their first daughter Kya (who's an earthbender), a son- Tyro (who's a nonbender), and another daughter Suma (who's a waterbender). They live a happy, peaceful (if you could call Katara stopping the occasional criminal before the police peaceful) life together where their children are well-loved and as part of the Southern Water Tribe as they are the Earth Kingdom. Aang's death hits their family hard, but they all come together and support each other. Katara personally mentors Korra, even convincing her family move to Republic City so that the Avatar knows the people she's meant to protect (the White Lotus protests, they fail❤️). She teaches Korra Waterbending, but also teaches her empathy and appreciation for other cultures (and that sometimes, selfish world leaders need a good punch to the face, a lesson Korra took to heart even though she absolutely wasn't supposed to see it).

Aang: Is torn up after Katara breaks up with him. He's hurt and confused and doesn't know what to do with himself. He retreats to Ba Sing Se where he talks with Iroh and learns that he unfairly pushed his feelings onto Katara. Wracked with guilt at hurting someone he cares about so much, Aang realizes that he has a lot of growing up to do. He focuses on his job as the Avatar, working closely with Zuko, Kuei, and the other leaders to heal the world after the war. The first time he sees Katara again is when she arrives to help with the United Republic of Nations. He apologizes to her and Katara forgives him, promising they'll always be best friends. His role in Republic City is more or less the same, though at some point he develops feelings for Toph. But he fears doing to her what he had done to Katara, so he tries to ignore them. But Toph, never one to beat around the bush, point-blank asks him if he's ever gonna man-up and confess to her. They start dating, and Lin comes a few months later as a surprise. They have their hiccups- Aang especially needing to reconcile with the fact that there's a chance she might not be an Airbender- but they manage to resolve them. Lin is an Earthender, of course, but Aang loves his little girl to pieces (which is good, because Toph would kill him if she suspected otherwise). Tenzin is born three years later, an Airbender, and Su Yin is born two years after that as an Earthbender. Lastly there's Bumi, a nonbender. There's always the urge to favor Tenzin, but Aang knows he can't. They're all his children and they deserve to be treated as such. So he teaches them all about their culture, takes them all on trips. The kids fight, but Aang is always quick to help resolve it (as it turns out, getting Lin and Su to stop fighting is a lot harder than getting the four nations to get along, go figure). Aang loves his wife and kids and wouldn't trade any of them for the world. He dies peacefully at age 66, surrounded by his children and the love of his life.

Sokka: Fucking hates politics. He'll leave the negotiating and speeches to his sister, thank you very much. If the room of government officials isn't a war room, he wants no part in it. After the war, he spends most of his time in the Southern Water Tribe. He works with his father to rebuild and relearn their culture, and writes frequent letters to his sister. Though, something about his life in the south is unfulfilling. Maybe he misses Suki, but there's something about inventing that calls to him. He can't do much of that in the south pole, so he leaves for the Earth Kingdom, helping villages struggling with heat, agriculture, transportation, etc. In the United Republic of Nations, he becomes lead engineer of the city, utilizing bending to make quick technological advances. He and Suki reunite in Republic City where Suki becomes the police chief. They get back together and have a daughter, Lian. The three of them live a simple life together, until Suki gets gravely injured in the line of duty when Lian is twenty. They decide to retire to the Southern Water Tribe where Sokka takes over for Hakoda as chief and prepares Lian to take over for him.

Toph: When Toph hears that Twinkle Toes and Sparky finally started that fancy new city, she thinks it's the perfect opportunity to cause a little chaos. Closing her metalbending school, she decides to relive her days as the Blind Bandit by founding pro-bending (thanks @ecoterrorist-katara for the idea!). Zuko's a hater and tries to shut it down because "safety," but finds no help in Aang who really, really loves the idea. He goes to every one of her matches and Toph feels both smug pride and... Something else. But she tells herself it would never happen, Twinkle Toes likes girls like Sugar Queen and she was the furthest thing from that. But she isn't totally oblivious, she can feel his heartbeat pick up when he's around her and how he's started to stutter when he's talking to her. So she bites the bullet and they start happily dating. But the arrival of Lin uncovers issues she didn't even know were there. Lin cries loudly and for Toph who relies heavily on her sense of hearing, it's hell. She was also unprepared for how much her body would change. She finds herself not wanting to be around her daughter. But Aang realizes this and urges her to talk to someone. After some arguing, she does. Aang is attentive, so Toph can take breaks when she needs to and Katara and Suki are always ready to get her out of the house when she's overwhelmed. Things with Lin get better and when Tenzin comes around she doesn't suffer nearly as much. Su Yin is similar. It's hard with Bumi because she's older, but Aang and her friends are there to support her. Toph can be distant with her children- her closely monitored childhood always present in her mind- but sees how Aang can be doting and allow their kids freedom. She follows by his example, trying to find a balance between hovering and absence. Aang's death is the worst day of her life- she was there, she felt his heart stop- and she retreats into the swamp for a while to grieve. But she returns to Republic City when Katara begins to mentor the new Avatar. Not to be outdone by Sugar Queen, she becomes Korra's second teacher. It's hard to be around Korra sometimes, but she likes the girl's spunk and attitude, even if she is a brat.

Zuko: Zuko struggles after the war. The obligations of the Fire Lord are crushing and daunting and the fear of turning into his father feels like it's constantly looming over his head. Mai doesn't understand why he's struggling so much and he can't figure out how to explain it to her, so they break up. She goes to Kyoshi Island to spend time with Ty Lee and figure out what she wants in life. Stressed, burnt-out, and heartbroken, Zuko asks Aang to kill him if he ever starts to act like Ozai, but Aang steadfastly refuses, berating him for even suggesting it. Aang assures him that he'll never turn into his father and that he has his friends to rely on. He follows after Aang to Ba Sing Se, working in his uncle's tea shop as a much needed break. He opens up to Iroh about his fears and Iroh affirms that even having these worries proves that he'll never be Ozai. He spends time in Ba Sing Se working in the tea shop and negotiating with the Earth King when he meets Jin again. She's as carefree as she was back then and Zuko is both envious and in awe of it. But he knows he can't have a relationship with her, he can't burden her with his problems. But Jin is gently persistent, lending an ear when he needs one and assuring him that he isn't burdening her. When she asks him if he wants to be with her, he confesses that he does- more than anything- but also admits that he has no idea how it'll work. She tells him that if they want to be together no one should stop them. A year later, they're married and she's crowned Fire Lady Jin. There are some protests to their relationship from traditionalists, but Ambassador Katara (Zuko is so sure that she was never actually given that title, but he can't prove it) is quick to shut them down citing that the Fire Lord marrying an Earth Kingdom girl is a sign of unity. They have their daughter, Izumi, and she's Zuko's entire world. Zuko's greatest fear is that his children will end up like him and Azula, so he refrains from having more kids. Jin respects this, but urges him to talk to Azula. So he does; his sister curses him out, but seems to enjoy his company in her own way. They'll never have a good relationship, but Zuko doesn't want her to feel alone so he makes time at least once a week. It's shortly after Aang's death that Zuko relinquishes the title of Fire Lord to Izumi, his grief over his lifetime friend far too painful. Eventually, though, Katara and Toph bully him into training the new Avatar. It's not a role for a retired Fire Lord, but Zuko knows that the world needs Korra to be strong and it's his responsibility to make that happen as much as he can. And so, he becomes Avatar Korra's third teacher (if you told him 60 years ago that he'd become the Avatar's most sane instructor, he'd think you were high on cactus juice. But with Katara punching dictators in the face and Toph breaking every rule ever written, someone has to be a good influence).

Suki: Police Chief of Republic City (I'm sorry I didn't make a detailed background for her I got lazy, I promise I don't love her any less😭)

Defending my ship choices:

Harutara: Come on, y'all know what I'm about at this point. They're my everything, how could I not have them together? Plus, there's something really poetic about Haru falling for her as an adult the way he did as a teenager: watching her inspire those around her. I headcanon that he's enamoured with the sound of her voice because it's the voice that liberated him and his people and he attends all her speeches

Taang: I actually wasn't sure about this one. I'm not an active Taang shipper, but I do think they'd really balance each other out. Toph is the hard ass Aang needs to challenge him and Aang would bring out the softer side in her. Toph would never let Aang favor one kid over the other and Aang wouldn't let Toph neglect their kids. So looking at it like that, I felt them being together would be best for the story

Sukka: It's not as perfect in canon as people make it out to be, but I still love them. I wouldn't want any different for them

Jinko: This one actually made more sense than I would have thought. Jin is very different from Mai, so I can really see her being what Zuko needs considering where he would be mentally. I like Mai, but I feel Maiko really made her way more one dimensional so her living with Ty Lee and finding herself feels like a better end for her (and if they start dating, that's no one's business). And we've already seen Zuko go out of his way to make Jin happy so it's not like we're getting another Kataang situation. I'm happy with this for them

The Kids:

Yes, I purposely made Kya an Earthbender. And yes, Katara still gives her her mother's necklace. Because that's her firstborn daughter no matter what element she does (or doesn't) bend. One thing I hate is that Bryke made the Kataang kids primarily part of the culture that they bend. That's such a slap in the face to biracial kids, not to mention poor Bumi who doesn't seem to belong to either for some reason until he ends up an Airbender. So yeah, all of the Harutara kids are part of the EK and SWT. Suma is a name I made up because it sounded pretty

I know it's weird to think of Lin and Tenzin as siblings, I felt so odd writing it. But I love them both so I couldn't just not write them. I made Bumi the youngest so he could be spoiled because he deserved better in canon. Su and Lin have a better relationship, but they still butt heads because they feel the need to one-up each other due to them both being Earthbenders (and later Metalbenders). Lin still becomes a cop, but their big fight never happened because Su was never neglected to the point of becoming a criminal. All four kids are taught Air Nomad culture and traditions and taken on trips because Aang is a decent father

I named Lian partly after Yue, since Yuèliàng means moon in Chinese. One of my gripes with LOK is that Katara and Sokka's family are meant to be the leaders of the SWT. Kya or Bumi should be the chief in canon, but Bryke just... Didn't do that for some reason. So fuck it, Sokka's daughter is chief now

Nothing really changes about Izumi, although I'd say she's a little friendlier. I contemplated giving Zuko more kids, but I actually think his decision not to have more kids was one of Bryke's better choices. It makes sense, so I didn't feel the need to change it

Other notes:

The Gaang teaching/helping raise baby Korra is something I live for

The Red Lotus is swiftly dealt with by Katara, Toph, Zuko, Suki, and Sokka when Korra is a kid. They never stood a chance. I was actually going to have Sokka still die during the attack in the SWT and Suki kill Zaheer in revenge, but eh I decided not to off Sokka

The Civil War still happens, but differently. I don't have the patience to go into that, just know that Katara is HEAVILY involved

6. Do you consider the comics/LoK canon?

I prefer to pretend that comics and TLOK aren't canon.

ATLA is enough for me, even though the love story isn't good written. It's weird and rushed except for Sokka and Suki. I'm a Zutara shipper, but I wouldn't expect them to end up together either if the better story is ended with friendship.

Why I don't consider comics as canon?

I probably can't give to much criticism because I don't read the comics yet and I'm not interested to do so because I've read many criticisms about it before, this is one of them that I found recently.

There are other criticisms about it, most of them about the plot and how is Katara's role reduce, from Katara we all know to not more than Avatar's girlfriend. Those makes me less interested, though.

Plus, I probably can't stand reading Aang and Katara calling each other 'Sweetie' all the time. It wasn't romantic but cheesy to me.

Why I don't consider TLOK as canon?

Don't get me wrong, I quite enjoyed TLOK since Bolin exist, but I don't think it's as well written as ATLA. The conflicts, the arcs, the complexity. I have a lot of thoughts on some aspects that make TLOK no more special than ATLA, but I will only explain the most disappointing for me - and a lot of fans - here, which is how Katara is written.

Bryke always tells fans that Kat/Ang are perfect pairing. Since they became canon in ATLA, Bryke has many chances in TLOK to convince fans (especially Zutara stand) of what Bryke said.

But what we get are – Katara's role simply as the wife and mother of the Avatar's children. Like, having 3 kids doesn't make them perfect couple. And if Katara's role replaced by another character, would the main story change? No, not at all.

Zuko still the one who knew Aang more than anyone else, not Katara.

It doesn't matter if Katara only end up being a healer in her old age even though she wanted to fight when she was young. I mean, Toph also lives in the swamp and Zuko chooses to retire as Fire Lord.

But where was she when she was young? Where was she when Sokka was a leader, Toph was a police chief, Zuko was a Fire Lord, and Aang was the avatar? Where is her statue, while even cabbage man has it?

Not only that, Bryke also thought it's a brilliant idea to make Aang as a bad father. Unbelievable!

Bryke ignores all the opportunities of Zutara. But seeing how Bryke's favourite pairing is written, it's better that Zutara don't end up together. I'm afraid Bryke would destroy Zutara more than Kat/Ang.

Lala

When you realize you have a new weapon to make fun of your sister, you have to use it even though for you it isn't a weapon. At least that's how Zuko thinks about it.

Azula: I’m going to kill your friends and my brother.

Katara: Your brother is also my friend.

Azula: But it’s a different crime. And is that what you are worried about in the whole sentence?

Katara: You want to kill them a lot. Nothing new. But don’t.

Azula: Ugh.

Katara:

Azula: At least you could ask why.

Katara: Fine. Why do you want to kill them this time sweetheart?

Azula: I’m going to ignore your tone. They discovered the “Lala”.

Katara: Is another weird tradition of the Fire Nation or..?

Azula: It’s Zuko’s Zuzu.

Katara: Oh that Lala. I think it is cute. But isn’t new, right? Zuko calls you that a lot.

Azula: To them it is. And Zuko is enjoying it.

Sokka: When you come back to the Southern Water Tribe I’m going to force you to do penguin sledding.

Azula: Why would I eve-

Zuko: Hey buddies.

Azula: Don’t call me buddy ever again.

Zuko: Ok Lala.

Sokka: We were-

Sokka: Wait what, Lala? What is a Lala?

Zuko: You know Zuzu?

Sokka: Are you asking me if I know you? Did you hit your head or something?

Zuko: Not dumbass, the nickname. Azula calls me that all of the time.

Azula: We know, Zuzu. So penguin sledding?

Sokka: Forget that. Did he just call you Lala? Can I call you Lala? Oh god the mighty Azula, princess of the Fire Nation…AND WE CAN CALL YOU LALA.

[Azula proceeds to electrocute Sokka]

Zuko: That was unnecessary.

Azula, getting ready to throw another lightning:

Zuko: LALA STOP IT

Aang: Azula really did a great job in the meeting.

Zuko: She’s actually really good but she’s really mean.

Aang: Yeah, although I was thankful when she made all of those councilors shut up.

Azula: My pleasure Avatar. I always love to make a grown up man cry. Ask Zuzu.

Zuko: She certainly does. Especially when I’m in that group.

Aang: Anyway thanks for today. Right?

Zuko: Yes, thanks to Lala now we only have like 5 boring meetings to go.

Aang: Wait.

Zuko: There’s more?!

Azula: Oh no.

Aang, grinning: Did he just call you Lala? That’s so cute.

Azula:

Zuko: See Azula, that's so cute. You should appreciate it.

Azula: I will deal with Zuzu later but if you want to use that word again Avatar let me remind you I already killed you once.

Zuko: If you kill him now Katara would break up with you.

Azula: SHUT UP DUMB DUMB *goes away*

Zuko: That’s worse than Lala. But at least she’s angry for the next meeting.

Aang: The next meeting it’s going to be awesome.

Suki: All of my warriors are spread inside the festival so we are protected.

Zuko: Great. All set then.

Azula: Wait, what about the harbor?

Suki: We are protecting a festival inside the city.

Azula: If I want to attack a festival I would do it through the harbor cause nobody would be there. You bring a few water benders or a Katara and break it all in like 5 minutes.

Suki: I hate to say this but you’re right. Let’s relocate some of the girls.

Zuko: Good job Lala.

Azula:

Suki:

Azula: I’m honestly more angry by the fact you just praise me like a dog than the nickname.

Suki: Yeah Zuko. We’re grown ups.

Zuko: But-

Zuko: Suki, I am giving you a chance to laugh at Azula’s expenses.

Azula: And she’s a grown woman who is doing her job. Shush.

Suki: Yeah Zuko I’m busy now. When I finish I can laugh and use the Lala.

Zuko: It doesn’t feel like a victory.

[After sparring time with Azula]

Toph: I needed that. Being police is awful.

Azula: Well you are a gun for the government.

Toph: You are part of the government.

Azula: Not the government that has you as chief.

Toph: You and I? In the same government? We will have to stop a coup like every day.

Zuko: But unfortunately you both will stop them.

Azula: Of course we will, Zuzu.

Toph: What are you doing here, Zuzu?

Zuko: Came to see why we were hearing two people fight to death on a Wednesday afternoon.

Toph: I was beating a princess’ ass.

Zuko: And also Lala, can you look at these scrolls? I need a second opinion.

Azula: Sure let’s me clea-

Toph: LALA.

Azula: Shit.

Toph: HE CALLED YOU LALA. IT SOUNDS LIKE A FUCKING CHILD SONG.

Toph: ZUZU AND LALA I CAN’T.

[Toph is rolling while she’s laughing]

Zuko: For once, I didn’t say it to bother you.

Azula: For once, I believe you.

Zuko: I think she can’t breathe.

Azula: Whether she dies because she can’t breathe or she feels more relaxed after a good laugh, she deserves it.

Azula: I swear to Agni.

Mai: Don’t be dramatic.

Ty lee: Why are you so angry? It never bothered you so much before, Zuko has been calling you Lala for years. It’s cute.

Azula: I mean it doesn’t bother me if Zuko calls me that. But them. Feels like I’m a joke.

Mai: Lala sounds like a joke.

Azula:

Ty lee: I think what’s bothering you so much is the exclusivity.

Azula: Explain yourself.

Ty lee: When he calls you Lala it comes from your “bond”. When any other person calls you Lala they are probably trying to laugh at your cost.

Mai: That’s deeply complicated with only having 2 lines of information.

Ty lee: I manage all the feelings in this group. I’m well trained.

Zuko: Why can’t you stop calling me that stupid name?!

Azula: Zuzu, it's cute. Nobody calls you Zuzu. I’m the only one who does it.

Zuko: Oh. That’s…okay you can call me Zuzu but

Azula: What?

Zuko, grinning: I’m calling you Lala cause nobody would call you that.

Azula: WHAT! NO! ZUZU.

I have been mulling over a Psych!AU for ATLA. I think it would be hilarious. I will probably not get around to writing it, but here's what I was thinking.

Katara in the Shawn Spencer role. She honed her skills with Pakku, her surly, not always supportive grandfather who came to live with her family when she was very young after her mother died. He saw her knack for puzzle solving and her preternaturally sharp memory. Katara has a strained relationship with him because of his deep rooted misogyny and his insistence that despite being a woman, Katara should follow his footsteps into law enforcement. It...is a weird dichotomy, and at the start of the story, it has been years since they spoke.

Sokka is her Gus. He's a tightly wound, neurotic overachiever who feels disappointed because after years of being the gifted kid, he ends up working as a pharma rep. He wanted to be an engineer or a bio-chemist, but it didn't work out (I haven't decided why just yet). He still pursues those interests in his own time, which makes him a valuable, if reluctant participant in his sister's schemes. He initially goes along with his sister's foray into psychic detecting in order to protect her, but eventually he gets just as into it as she is. Especially after he meets Suki.

Suki is our Juliette. She's a sharp junior detective who assists the sibling detective duo from time to time. She believes Katara's psychic abilities after a few times witnessing her solving cases. Well, she mostly believes it. She can't completely wrap her mind around it, but she also can't think of a rational, natural explanation for how Katara seems to know what she knows. As time goes on, she develops feelings for Sokka, the sarcastic, logical, goofy half of the detective duo. She often acts as a buffer between the siblings and her partner,

Zuko is the Carlton Lassiter of the story. He does not believe Katara's claims of psychic abilities, but like Suki, he hasn't come up with a rational explanation. Yet. Still, she gets results, he can't deny. Their relationship is rocky at first. Zuko was the best detective in the police department, until Katara started showing him up. He is a stickler for rules and procedure, and he hates how Katara and her brother just do whatever cockamamie thing pops into their head, and it works out. As they work together more, he feels like he's on the cusp of figuring her out, but he just finds himself more and more impressed with her. Eventually, they become friends, and after that, something else blossoms between them.

Toph is this story's Woody. She's a slightly unhinged ME with an attitude problem. She is probably not completely blind, but she's severely visually impaired, which makes people doubt her abilities. At first. But then they realize why she is the ME for the most prestigious police department in the area. She likes the way Katara and Sokka have shaken up the department, so she doesn't mind helping them out every so often. She knows exactly how Katara manages to solve these crimes, but she will take that secret to the grave, because she thinks it's hilarious.

Aang is McNabb, and if you've seen the show, you know I'm right.

Iroh is the chief Vic. He runs the department with efficiently and is the one who impressed the importance of the rules in his nephew, Detective Zuko. Unfortunately, he never could get the boy to be more open minded. Iroh has no trouble employing the services of a psychic detective, as long as she gets the job done. He also finds it amusing to watch his nephew trying very hard not to be in love with her.

Obviously, Pakku is the Henry. Hakoda is Hakoda. He's a good dad, but he left a lot of the work of raising his kids to his mother-in-law, Kanna and Pakku, her husband, while he worked to keep the entire household financially afloat. Now that his kids are grown and out of the house, and he works less, he is trying to keep them all connected. He's very proud of his kids, though he doesn't completely understand what exactly it is they're doing. Either that, or he occasionally fills the Gus role along with or instead of Sokka.

"Got it," Brian replied, holding his phone with his shoulder as he pressed on the gas, "thanks."

"Don't mention it." his ex-co-worker spoke to him, "I mean it don't, the chief is already on my ass, and this could cost me my job. you could get caught. Are you sure she's really worth it?"

Brian caught a brief look at the sign he drove past. Miami 342 miles. Carson had been living here for over a year, he came to discover.

"I wouldn't be risking my freedom if she wasn't would I?"

"Goodbye, O'Conner. Don't get caught."

Brian pulled his phone away and took another look at the address. Florida wasn't Carson's seen and he knew that because he knew her, and he knew that he fucked up, he lied to her for months, and broke her trust and her heart.

And on top of that, he was stalking her... Trailing her - what the police force would refer to it as, but he wasn't a cop anymore. He was on the run, escaping police custody once was one thing, but helping Dom, a known criminal to escape was another. He yearned for normalcy, for the love he could only give and receive from one person.

Carson Baker.

He missed everything about her, but he knew he would be the last person she wanted to see, so he couldn't go to her instantly, he needed a place to stay. Suki was the name of the girl Carson was living with but also the on-and-off-again girlfriend of an ex-street racer he was friendly with.

Brian quickly dialled the number as he went from 50mph to 60mph.

"Yo?" a familiar voice echoed through his cell.

Brian smiled, "Tej man, wassup?"

"Bullit? That you? Haven't heard from you in a minute, you still racin'?"

"Never stopped," Brian adjusted his hand on the wheel of his Skyline.

"Well if you're ever in my city, holla."

Brian hummed, "Do you still have that houseboat?"

Tej quirked up a brow, "Yeah, why?"

"Check it, I need a place to stay. You cool with that?"

"That's cool, but you're gonna have to race, can't keep that talent on the low." Tej chuckled.

Brian couldn't help but smile, "You tryin' pimp me out?"

"Call it whatever you want, but let me know when you've touched down. I'll introduce you to my people."

"I think I know a few people man. Someone in particular."

"Oh yeah, Who's that?" Tej's eyes travelled over to the stylish girl sighing as she worked over the hood of her car. "Suki, careful baby, don't over-exert yourself" Brian perked up at the mention of the girl, "You gotta a woman Brian?"

Brian stiffened, "Had. But that won't be the case for too long."

"I know that's right. Later man."

"Later," Brian ended the call and grinned.

Miami here he comes.

Sources close to the Avatar say that he was surrounded by friends and family, including prominent leaders in our new Republic: Councilman Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe, the Chief of Police, Toph Beifong, General Suki of Kyoshi Island, and Fire Lord Zuko. Avatar Aang, the lone survivor of the massacre of the Air Nomads, the hero of the Hundred Years War and founder of Republic City, is survived by his wife, Master Katara of the Southern Water Tribe, 45, and their three children: Lieutenant Bumi of the United Forces Navy, 23, Master Kya, 21, and Master Tenzin, 17. The Avatar and Master Katara’s son, Tenzin, is now the only living air bender. as far as any possible kids go idk we didn’t meet suyin till book 4 we barely saw izumi i think they just didn’t want to make the new series be a atla reunion plus lok was only meant to be one season so they were making that shit up as they went along lmao. and back in 2012-14?? they didn’t know themselves what happened to sukka lmao.

sokka and suki are definitely the type to break up bc of long distance but then find their way back to each other a few years later especially as they settle into their roles in life.

while bryke definitely neglect suki and sokka to some capacity also they do have a soft spot for suki after bringing her back. many don’t consider her to be team avatar but they’ve stated they do so idk ! she shows up a lot in the comics which have obv been created post-lok and it’s been said that they’ll utilise it’s plots and characters in shall see in future projects (crane fish town becoming republic city maybe??? where suki currently is working?? and sokka later lives!!)

i’m p sure suki will be in it at some capacity anyway and that there’ll stick with jennie as she’s one of the few asian og va’s. she’s doing a lot of work atm for avatar studios.

also random but i literally found out today that it’s not bryke-confirmed that mai and zuko end up together. it was a comment on a panel by the old comic writer. it’s not technically canon. izumi is the spit of mai anyway but hmm! interesting!!

btw btw suyin’s father was def a sandbending outlaw who toph had a secret relationship with that couldn’t be public bc of her role as police chief x

oo big ask ok let me break this up into different paragraphs …

fist point - one thing i will admit about lok is that it fell short in incorporating the original characters into the new series in an interesting way with enough verisimilitude (realistic-ness) that it didn’t feel like they were just throwing a popular character into an episode for the sake of it. such as the whole ‘aang is a bad dad’ thing because they under-utilised him as a mentor figure to korra and instead focused on his supposed favourite son (i have thoughts on this re. aang NOT being a ‘Bad’ dad but i will make another post on it if u are interested (or have i alr made one? i’ll make another one.))

i have to agree that they would’ve probably done something shitty to sokka or suki if they were included. especially with the entire first season of lok being about bender/non-bender equality… i can just imagine they’d make sokka say something dumb about the equalist movement being 100% Bad instead of him actually supporting some of their completely valid arguments. idk. i’m sad there’s no sukka but at the same time…. quit while ur ahead yk.

second point - sukka long distance relationship is so real ESPECIALLY during their first few years together. i can see them just kinda calling it off because of commitment issues due to their work, etc. but not ever really losing feelings. they’d be endgame tho🥰

i can absolutely see suki being in upcoming projects! especially since she and the other kyoshi warriors expanded their reach across the nations - it would be hard to ignore them completely if we’re assuming they’re including comic canon into the universe. i hope jenny returns!!

third point - yeah! how crazy that maiko as izumi’s parents isn’t canon confirmed… though she’s so clearly mai’s daughter. i wonder if mai’s role will be expanded in upcoming projects / if she’ll be featured more. hmmm.

fourth - would honestly prefer this to the theory sokka is her father lol. it kinda baffles me that TOPH became a cop.. not bc she opposes authority - there’s something different about enforcing it than there is having to follow it. i can see toph in authoritative positions, and she fits them well. but i think it baffles me moreso because why would toph even work as a COP? isn’t that boring as hell for her?? go do something awesome like probending or professional underground fighting (adult blind bandit anyone?? this would make a good fic) or literally just construction idk i feel like toph isn’t a Hard Worker type that would want to be stuck in such a rigid career.

#Avatar BioShock Crossover AU" 2023 please!!!

This one's a doozy.

I don't remember precisely what triggered this one, but there was a period of a couple weeks last year where I got really into the idea of an Avatar/BioShock crossover AU. This spawned several AUs, only one of which made it into my WIP folder, apparently, so the rest must be lurking on discord with my beta reader. This particular AU has a few scant character notes, some timelines, and a discussion of themes that paint what I would consider a compelling but overly-ambitious picture.

The themes in play: destiny, causality, consciousness, free will, and moral choice. We are pulling material from BioShock, BioShock 2, BioShock 2: Minerva's Den, BioShock Infinite, Avatar: the Last Airbender, and Legend of Korra. Rapture exists in its own right, whereas Columbia is replaced with Republic City. Tears, Spirit Portals, and Spirit Wilds are all the same thing, linking Rapture and Republic City across time and space. Bending and Splicing are the same, as well, with the "Avatar" being someone who has spliced up to an incredible degree and not died of every kind of cancer. The Avatar State is thus a kind of berserk mode that uses up all the EVE in the Avatar's body, leaving them powerless and vulnerable at the end. Past Avatars exist as coherent ADAM ghosts.

Aang, in this story, is a Jack/Eleanor Lamb character originally from Rapture who escaped into Republic City through a tear, and set about trying to find a way back to Rapture's past to undo all of the damage he ended up causing. He's a man haunted by guilt whose efforts are ultimately futile, because that's not how causality works.

Korra is our Elizabeth, whose ability to open and close tears makes her valuable to Aang in his quest for redemption, but also makes her a target for everyone on both sides of the veil who wants a slice of the Rapture/Republic City pie. But opening and closing tears destroys entire sections of probability space, creating fixed points in spacetime and releasing a ton of spiritual energy that gets eaten by the bioluminescent mass that sits beneath Rapture, spitting ADAM slugs back out into the world, accelerating the chaos and decline of both cities.

I have here that Aang somehow travels back to the past and becomes the founder of Rapture, which means he later creates and then kills himself while trying to do everything he can to avoid that outcome. It probably made more sense in my head the time. The other members of the Gaang are listed as Rapture's Best & Brightest: Zuko and Sokka are divorced and miserable, with Zuko trying to be a single dad and Sokka inventing the Thinker; Katara is the city's foremost doctor and philanthropist; Suki is a detective/private security chief; and Toph runs the banks because nobody else is capable. She also laid a lot of the city's foundation.

The Mechanist is here inventing things. Wu is a popular singer with his own radio program. Suyin is a prima donna ballerina. Asami is...presumably doing something amazing, but I didn't write that bit down.

The villain rogue's gallery is all here as well, moving back and forth across the tears and causing mischief and mayhem. Zaheer's radical spirituality causes Aang (Rapture Founder) to ban religion, and Unalaq tries to get control of the Avatar Program so that he can become an Avatar himself. Ozai and Zhao extend their feelers throughout both cities, seizing power and resources for themselves. Amon slots himself nicely into the Atlas role (plot twist and all), so nothing really more to say there. Kuvira is apparently a former police officer turned mob boss capitalizing on the chaos for her own gain. Long Feng is a cold technocrat who runs a private security firm and manages assets for city big wigs. My note on him is "a less affable Sinclair."

Pro-bending/ADAM boxing is a thing, so Mako and Bolin are here trying to make it big in the big bad city/ies, which probably means I planned some background Wuko.

I have no idea what my endgame was. I don't know what the actual plot was going to be. This project wasn't one I seriously considered planning out in detail because I was in the middle of H&V/J&R work, and that takes priority over anything else with this level of ambition. Having said that, it might be interesting to take another pass at the concept and see if I can turn all of that up there into something workable.

The new A:TLA reminds me

I was way more interested in the Gaang’s children than I ever was in Korra and her friends, and I was honestly disappointed when I first saw that LOK would have the next generation be middle-aged.

We got so little of them as kids and teenagers, too! All the flashbacks involving Lin and Suyin were just building up to a traumatic moment where Toph is corrupt for a day, and the fanart I’ve seen of the Gaang kids is so good that I wish we focused on them instead of Korra. I mean, I understand it’s meant to be about the reincarnation of the Avatar, but Aang was already such a great character and for him to die years before the events of the series began was sad.

We barely saw any of Sokka as an adult, and we don’t really know how his relationship with Suki went. We don’t know how Suyin turned into a little shit when her mother was the literal chief of police, or how people treated Bumi because he couldn’t bend. The fandom is split down the middle about how Aang was as a father, where some believe he was awful and blatantly favored Tenzin and the others think he was great for, I don’t know, some reason.

And I’m super upset we didn’t get to see Zuko and Mai overcome their childhood issues to raise their daughter and break the cycle of abuse. Why the Hell couldn’t we see any of that?

*Notes: Tenzin is way more of a black sheep here than the golden child in canon. Him and Aang having a hard relationship because of the expectations placed on him is one thing I'm very proud of. I think he feels like he has to be this perfect son and feels like he can't approach Aang about it. And Toph is a less than understanding person, so he can't really talk to her either. His biggest regret is never opening up to his father before he died. So he suffers in silence (lmao)*

Suyin Beifong (basically the same as canon):

Third child of Aang and Toph

Brown hair, green eyes; resembles both Toph and Aang (has the complexion of Toph's father)

A calm, rational person. Loves history. Painfully non-violent because of that history. Her heart is to the Fire Nation and repairing the damage her country has done. She also has a deep love for Ba Sing Se because that's where her mother is from. Some might call her reserved before they get to know her, to her friends she's one of the nicest people ever

No one knows if she's actually a Firebender or not, she's never confirmed or denied it even to her closest friends. Doesn't feel the need to. Looks at it like a political strategy; no one can say she's favoring benders or nonbenders. She is a master swordswoman, though

Archeologist, Historian, Fire Lord

*Notes: I decided not to choose if Izumi's a bender or nonbender. I like the theory that she keeps is secret in canon as a political move. I don't know if they kept it vague in canon on purpose, but I like it that way. I kind of based her off Nico Robin from One Piece*

Anti-stalking campaigners have launched a super-complaint against the police, claiming officers are failing to identify offenders, properly investigate crimes or protect victims.

A group of 21 expert individuals and organisations called the National Stalking Consortium said there are systemic issues in how stalking is dealt with, with only 5% of cases in England and Wales ending with a charge.

Suky Bhaker, chief executive of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust which set up the consortium, said a significant number of stalking victims are being let down by the police.

The super-complaint, a measure used to highlight wider problems or trends in policing, is being brought 10 years on from a change to the law that made stalking a specific offence.

Ms Bhaker said: “We support thousands of victims every year across our National Stalking Service and a significant number of them tell us that they are being let down by the police and the courts at every step of their journey to justice.

“Failure to identify and investigate stalking at the earliest possible opportunity results in an increasing risk of physical and psychological harm to the victim.

“We hope that the outcome of this super-complaint will result in robust recommendations to improve the police response to stalking across the country which is so vitally needed.”

The campaigners claim police are failing to identify patterns of behaviour and often treat incidents as lower level crimes such as malicious communications or criminal damage.

They said they are “highly concerned” that reports of stalking are not properly investigated due to officers incorrectly believing there is not enough evidence, and that stalking protection orders are not used often enough.

Claire Waxman, Victims’ Commissioner for London and herself a victim of stalking, said: “Too many stalking victims are being let down by the police and wider justice system – with stalking behaviours being ignored or minimised, and breaches of restraining orders not taken seriously enough.

“I fully support the National Stalking Consortium’s super-complaint, which highlights a number of failures in the way stalking cases are being dealt with, leaving victims at risk of further harm and causing unnecessary distress.

“While I hoped the revised stalking legislation would lead to better protections and justice for victims, 10 years on the charge rate remains unacceptably low.

“It is clear the justice system is still struggling to identify and tackle stalking robustly, leaving too many victims suffering and at risk. Change is well overdue as stalking victims deserve to be protected.”

Once the super-complaint is submitted, a watchdog will decide whether it is eligible for investigation.

National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for stalking and harassment, Deputy Chief Constable Paul Mills, said: “Harassment and stalking are serious crimes which can have a devastating effect on the lives of victims and their friends and family.

“Stalking is a crime which goes to the very heart of violence against women and girls, removing their feeling of safety.

“It is recognised there is more to do to improve the criminal justice system outcomes for victims of stalking and we are working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service to understand the progression of cases before the point of charge and court.”

Police in England and Wales issued more than 400 stalking protection orders in 2020 and expect the number to increase.

The number of stalking crimes recorded by forces has also risen, which chiefs claim is due to improved awareness of offending behaviour.

A BROTP I have with said character: katara, suki and toph would've been the best trio ever and you cannot convince me otherwise. we were so fucking robbed.

i also love suki and zuko being close friends, especially because i think suki would be the first to notice that zuko and katara are in love. they'd definitely bond over being in love with a water tribe sibling (especially how damn cold the south pole is).

A NOTP I have with said character: discounting all large age gap ships, probably none!

A random headcanon: suki leads the kyoshi warriors well into her forties, giving it up only to become the chief of the republic city police (after she's trained a worthy successor, naturally). seriously, why the fuck did they make toph police chief when suki, already the leader of a military organization and used to a regimented lifestyle, was right there???

General Opinion over said character: criminally underdeveloped and underappreciated. seriously, we had time for episodes like the great divide and nightmares and daydreams, but not to flesh out a character who would become part of our main protagonist group? and why did she just fucking disappear from existence by the time of lok??? did bryke just not know how to write women who didn't become housewives and mothers?

“Mhmmm, stuff. And…? Anything else?” she raised her eyebrows.

Sokka finally got the hint and rolled his eyes, “Oh, for fuck’s sake, no. I’m not seeing anyone, so don’t ask,” but his heartbeat spiked, anyway. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Toph tilting her head.

Kataara deflated, “aww, I was so sure this time. You had that look about you.”

“What!? What look!? What do you mean? I don’t have a ‘look’?!” Sokka’s eyes flickered over to the stage, where Zuko was standing with his Uncle.

Toph was smirking now.

“You know, you can tell me anything, Sokka. You're my brother and I love you.”

“Jeez, Kataara. I know. But seriously, stop harking on about me finding someone. It’s…not helping.”

Kataara stepped back, “Ah, I’m sorry Sokka. I genuinely didn’t mean to pressure you.”

“It’s ok. It’s just when everyone does it, it gets a bit much…it’s dad as well, and the others back home. Yeah. Anyway, I-”

“MOOOOOOOM” came a wailing voice across the crowd. Kataara cursed quietly, and then excused herself.

He breathed a sigh of relief. The ‘why aren’t you married yet’ conversation was starting to happen more and more frequently. Maybe some guys just weren’t marrying material (and maybe some guys were secretly in love with the fucking Fire Lord who was already fucking married and very much still in the closet).

Toph was still smirking.

“Oh stop that,” Sokka told her, “what are you smirking about anyway?”

“Nothing,” she replied, smiling wider, “I think I just finally figured it out.”

His blood ran cold, “what are you talking about?”

“Seriously, Sokka? You’re fucking transparent sometimes. Gotta give it to you though, you’ve got some serious balls - still sleeping with Zuko in secret? I figured you guys would fuck it out and move on ages ago.”

He stared at the earth bender, his eyes as wide as dinner plates, “Spirits above, Toph! How long have you known?”

She scoffed, “dude, I am literally the chief of police for Republic City. I literally invented the profession. Detective shit is what I’m good at and I’m especially good at reading people I already know. It wasn’t that hard to figure out.”

“Shit.”

“Yeah, shit. But hey, I’m kinda happy for you two - fuck what people expect, huh? Go do what makes you happy, even if it’s messy and complicated.”

“You speaking from experience?”

Toph shrugged, but she turned her face away so that Sokka couldn’t read her expression. For a long few moments, neither said anything. The chattering and laughter of the party swirled around them.

“Does he?” she finally asked, so softly Sokka almost didn’t catch it.

“Does he what?”

“Make you happy?”

Sokka had never been asked this before. Hell, he rarely got to actually talk about this with anyone (except Suki, who had walked in on him and Zuko once and was surprisingly supportive about the whole thing).

He wasn’t sure the answer was so clear - he just knew that no matter what he and Zuko did, no matter how they tried to stay apart, no matter how much he tried (and who he tried with) to move on, he just couldn’t.

He knew that he was screwed. And he was screwed for the fucking Fire Lord.
