There is nothing particularly unusual about it: the Western fascination with Yugoslav modernist monuments, those strange concrete boulders scattered across the failed state, is renewed at regular intervals. Four years ago, for example, the Belgian photographer Jan Kempenaers published a photo monograph 'Spomeniks': 'Raised in peaceful fields, in the middle of nowhere', the respected Guardian introduced his book at the time, 'spomeniks look like places where alien spacecraft have landed or like album covers Pink Floyd.'' The filming of the new Netflix dystopian series 'The Tribes of Europa', which tells the story of the distant future of a continent divided - this will sound familiar - into numerous, small, mutually warring states, was completed on Petrova Gora these days. And so on, and so on, further and further away from what Yugoslav monuments used to mean: if there is something in common with all these advertising campaigns, dystopian TV-fantasies and photo-safaris around the places of the people's uprising, it is a complete lack of interest in historical, political and the artistic context from which the monuments grew. In the Western perspective, they are now only gigantic exotic souvenirs from a distant and incomprehensible past. Alien apparitions for which we do not know who exactly built them, when and why: rather traces of UFOs than signs of people's liberation war. Mark O'Neill's series of instagram photos, devoid of any information about the monuments other than the elementary mention of their locations, fits perfectly into such a tradition. So nothing new from the west. Perhaps that is why it is more interesting to check what is happening with the monuments today from the perspective of the East. Coincidentally, last week, just as the post-Yugoslav news portals were compulsively copying O'Neill's photo gallery, another anniversary of the demolition of the magnificent Monument to the Victory of the Revolution of the People of Slavonia by Vojin Bakić, which was erected in Kamenska near Požega, on February 21, 1992, passed almost unnoticed. Members of the 123rd Brigade of the Croatian Army in a well-organized mine action expertly removed them from the face of the earth. Only the small portal Antifašistički Vjesnik reminded of the sad anniversary by publishing a photo gallery of the ruins, along with a brief overview of the then propaganda lies from the local media about how the monument was broken by the Chetniks or, possibly, by a strong wind. But the ruin of Bakić's monument are not very photogenic, there are no spotlights or Instagram filters, it cannot serve as an advertising scenography, so the article from Antifašistički Vjesnik was not shared by anyone. No one to press copy, no one to click and paste: the anniversary of the destruction of one of the most beautiful monuments of the former Yugoslavia did not become news this year either. There is simply no room for some stories in the colorful, colorful, clickable memory of the media, just as there was none twenty-eight years ago. After all, what do you want: it was a war, we clicked cut.

Focus. Breathe. Attack.
His movements, fluid. His strike, deadly.
“Useless!” He calls out as another foe falls to his feet, the dark smoke finally dissipating from their body as they do so. This is necessary, he tells himself. Each time another life is taken by his hands, the karmic debt that encased his insides only grew, wrapping around his chest so tightly sometimes it was difficult to take a breath. But it was worth it, to keep his home safe, to keep the people safe, but most importantly-
“Xiao!”
To keep you safe.
His head tilted towards you, who was perched on top of a nearby boulder with something obstructing your face. Some sort of modern contraption, he recalls you telling him about it one day. A camera, he believes it was called. You’re grinning behind it, and he’s lost as to why.
“Didn’t I tell you to stay at the inn?”
“I got bored…” Giggling, you lowered the device, revealing the radiant smile on your face. In all of his years of living, he doesn’t think he’s seen anything more beautiful than the pure happiness he witnessed on your face. How lucky he was to experience it daily. A heavy sigh of exasperation escaped his lips, his head shaking slightly. He should’ve known better than trusting one of the most curious humans he’s ever encountered to stay in such a safe place. There was no taming your insatiable infatuation with the world.
You could tell he was disappointed with you, but you could also tell from the slight curl of his lip that he was just as happy to see you as you were with him. Hopping off the large rock, you opened your arms wide and stared at him with a grin. If you had done this in the early stages of your relationship, Xiao would’ve been beyond confused, and would imitate your actions. The funny thing was, however, he didn’t move in to hug you - just stood there with his arms out like a baby bird attempting to fly. Now, he understood, and hesitantly wrapped his arms around you. He still had some struggles with physical intimacy with you, but he was slowly coming around to it. Tainted with such darkness, the adeptus would never want to infect you with his incurable disease, and that resulted in the both of you not touching very much. But fortunately, the times you did touch just made it all the more satisfying. His affection was rare like precious gems; seldom people experienced it’s majesty, but the ones who did were spellbound.
“Missed you.” You whispered in his ear, smiling when you got a quiet ‘mhm’ and feeling his grip around you tighten for a moment before his arms left you altogether.
“What were you doing just now?”
“Oh, I was taking pictures of things! Want to see?” Before he could answer, you had already grabbed his wrist and pulled him to sit down on the fresh grass with you. Excitedly, you showed him the pictures you got, and began to ramble about all of them. Most were rather mundane, pictures of birds and flowers littering the small screen that showed him your work. But some made him pause, staring in shocked silence.
“That’s…”
“It’s you! Wow… You’re photogenic.“ You didn’t mean to sound so mystified, knowing your adeptus wasn’t too fond of being treated like the godly figure he was. In his eyes, he was a weapon, nothing more. In his eyes, he was privileged to have gotten to know you, and to have you in his life.
“Hm…” He mumbled. At first, you thought he was angry, but when his fingers trailed over the screen, clearly another emotion was building instead. He looked surprised, eyes slightly wide and eyebrows raised. Never would he call his work of killing demons beautiful, but through your eyes he could see why you admired him so much. He looked like a real warrior, something that had stepped out of an ancient painting that was battling evil. In a mortal's eyes, he could see why he was looked up to- admired, even, so much. His head rested against your shoulder as he handed the camera back to you, eyes still fixated on the screen.
“Can you… Show me more? I like seeing the world through your eyes.” He admitted quietly, refusing to meet your eyes. It was embarrassing to ask a human such a thing. But all you did was smile and shuffle closer, scrolling to another picture.
To think he would fall for such a weak mortal… And to think that they were far more powerful than he was, even with all his strength. All because they had the power to help him experience this emotion called love.
Now that was true power.

Scenes from the trail - sunrise edition
The Bean & I were out early today. A glorious morning with a fabulous forecast, so outdoor work is beckoning.
A wee scamper up Carn na Leitire first, where we watched the sun heave into view over the legendary Loch Ness and Dores. Bailey was into all the smells that the creatures of the night left for her and paused for a photogenic moment before she went to flush some red grouse.
On the way back we passed near a huge boulder that's a relic of the last ice age. It's called a glacial erratic because it was dumped there by a glacier and bears little resemblance to local rocks.
Finally, a clear view of the mountains in the distance as we arrived back home. That's our roof (foreground bottom left), and the wee dish is what provides our internet connection.

The wall collapsed by the little forest and somebody called the council about it, and the council sent a little team of men to come and put up red fences around the giant hole in the wall. And it was, giant, it was about a twenty foot gap between the road and the forest, with the boulders all tumbled down into the woods. And they had been there for so long, now, that ivy had started to grow on the masonry. And the kids had broken through the fences and gone into the woods, but had found it tricky to enter because of the rubble underneath. And this part of the road was not used anymore because they had knocked down the bloodbank which used to be adjacent to the woodland. They’d demolished those weird industrial buildings, and taken away the liquid nitrogen tank and all of the funnels that used to stem into that steamy concrete block at the top. For months there were these screeching sounds of torn metal and rumbling engines working away and then they left – and they say that they’re going to build a new housing estate on this plot of land maybe a half square mile in dimension. That’s what the council told the local people anyway. Via letters in the mail. And there was another letter recently about how they were going to do something about the kids that kept breaking into the derelict house at the top of the road. They realised that the folks were concerned about this behaviour. And then there was the news, or rather the outcome, of a group of folks who had gone in there and lit fire to the building and the damage was so bad that they had to demolish that as well. But the council didn’t send a letter about that. The information was only sent via word of mouth or by people simply seeing this blackened building, and then its spent demise. Who were the Council, exactly? Who were in charge? Another example was the gate down the road that led into the woods that they’d removed for some reason, and smashed up the wall, for some reason, and then left the bricks on the ground and replaced the entire thing with a new gate which they hadn’t attached anywhere. … At the same time, who were the people to complain? This little hushed suburb, that didn’t seem to belong to anywhere; this small island at the south end of the city: who cared about that when it came to something like a council? Most folks don’t have the luxury of living next to a woodland. Or to see such trees, in height and width, making photogenic scenes whenever you went out walking. There was no council for this outer-island … For some places there was no necessary paperwork to connect with.

"aaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH"
THUNK
The sound was deafening. Like a screaming boulder landed in our backyard.
"Molly!" crooned Grandma, like this was most standard noise in the world "Could you go check on that? I think it came from the backyard."
But I had already paused my stream, slipped into my crocs, and was heading out the backdoor. Or well, fumbling with the blinds. I couldn't believe my eyes. Had an angel literally fallen from heaven?
A young woman- no older girl? She looked like a cross between a Moon Princess and a British one. I rushed to her side. She spoke mostly like a British Princess though.
At first she was incomprehensible. Speaking fast, with too many "thees", "thous", royal "Wes" and- I'm no English major- but I thought her grammer was terrible. At a certain point I think she realized she was speaking gibberish. She calmed down, and spoke in a more comprehensible voice that sounded like an anime girl mimicking old British English.
"We know this'll sound quite absurd." She looked at me to see if I understood, and I nodded "But I'm your Uncle. Something happened to Us- erh, me on Our hiking trip. We were- Uhm, hit by truck."
I blinked. What the hell was she talking about? For one, Uncle Ted stopped by a few hours ago. I whipped out my phone to text that asshole, but the mystery girl stole my phone, pressed an odd button, and called him instead.
Uncle Tom's eternally irritated voice replied "Damn it, Mi- Molly" that asshole couldn't even get my name right "I just started by damn hike- wait WHAT THE HELL IS DRIVING-?"
The phone screamed as some horrible crunching and screeching rubber on dirt noise blared from its speakers. I was too dumbfounded to react.
Grandma's voice broke the silence "Wowee girlie, you look like someone whose been stolen away by the fae and now back again if I've ever seen one."
"No no no no-" The princess girl repeated, seemingly determined to clear up this point "We were isekai'd." ---
After some explaining, reciting of information, and profuse apologizing I could maybe believe this girl was once my uncle. Although now she was apparently "legally adopted" by my grandmother. Or at least according to the documentation that dropped with her. Well, even our records collaborated that she's been here for a while, even though Grandma and I know its different. Very fae-like, according to Grandma.
Anyway, Grandma and I decided that she could stay for the night. The girl was getting more understandable by the hour, and maybe by tomorrow she'd sound somewhat normal.
So tomorrow, I'm in my PJs, making myself some toast with Grandma, when the girl prostrates herself before me. She finally looks a bit more normal- like an extremely photogenic casual weeb girl rather than a "Cosplay beauty pageant winner" weeb girl.
"I wanted to apologize again for mistreating you, Molly!" The girl squeaked out. "The person I was before well- I was very narrow-minded. And not a good person…"
My bread popped from the toaster. I spread some of Grandma's jam on it. Unfortunately, I didn't have it in my heart to stay mad at little Miss Moon Princess, even if she was once my 5th shittiest family member. "Alright, I forgive you."
"Thank you!" She hopped back upright, nervous but slightly more excited. Her eyes shone with puppy-like "I- uhm- Also I go by Summer now!… The title I used to go by, in the other world, is a bit of mouthful and more than embarrassing." she looks sidewise as though she's rehearsed this conversation a dozen times in her head "So yeah! Call me Summer!"
"Very fae-touched name." Grandma muttered to me. The comment did not go unnoticed by Summer.
"Let- let me tell you my story over breakfast!" Summer seemed adamant to set the story straight. Grandma and I sat, armed with toast and fruit, preparing for whatever strange tale lay ahead of us.
Summer began to recount her journey, "So I was walking in the woods and I got hit by a truck- which you heard, Molly. In retrospect, its kind of a weird place to get struck by traffic. Anyway, I thought I died, but instead I woke up in this floaty white space. Some kind of goddess approached me. She said- 'If you reincarnate as a hero and defeat the demon lord, I'll send you home with any loot you find.' And considering I was dead, I had no choice by to accept her offer!"
Grandma looked at me once and stated "Faeries love bargains like this-"
Summer began gesturing wildly to get our attention "SO I get reincarnated as this super cute babe you see before you! And I was like 'weird! I'm a girl now!' and it took some time to get used to but I guess I kinda like it? Like I'm way softer now! You- you know how it is right???" she motioned at her different assets, before realizing what she was doing, stopping, blushing, and continuing her story.
"Anyway! I went on this really wild and long quest. Its WAY too much for one story session. But- OH YEAH I have my sword!" She pulled a flaming sword out of an apparent void located within her chest. With a single dramatic swipe, I think she singed one of my stray hairs.
"And uhm, I also have my inventory in here-" She reached her hand deep within her cleavage. Random junk dropped from her V-neck onto the table. "Here's those elixirs I forgot to use…. Ah yeah, you always need antidotes! Wish I had them before the swamp… Here's the farmer's keys from that quest I forgot I was on, hope he didn't need them… Oh yeah, this baby!" She pulled out a very futuristic-looking rocket "Never got to use the intercontinental missile, but it was plan B if everyone's hopes and dreams weren't enough to slay the demon lord!"
Grandma side-eyed to me "Not many people know this, but the fair-folk love high-grade explosives."
Summer forced a go-getter smile "ANYWAY, we totally rocked that demon lord, the witch and I got married, and we became princesses! It was a really chill 100 years or so, but then the goddess appeared to me in a dream and was all 'you're time is up, you're soul can't stay in this realm any longer.' So she sent me home, and here I am! I was totally isekai'd. Believe me now?"
"Mostly" replied Grandma.
"No." I blurted out.
Summer deflated a little. "O-okay. I know its all a little hard to believe… I just hope you find it in your heart to believe me one day! I was totally isekai'd!" ----
Poor girl. Even with her bombshell body, she had little luck in love. I think Summer's journeys in wherever-the-hell left her a little naïve. She had texted me to pick her up from the bar. I wonder who broke up with her this time- wasn't too soon since her last girlfriend?
When I got to the local pub, Summer was in her favorite quiet spot in the corner. When she saw me, she instantly motioned me towards her. God, she was unreasonably cute, even as a sobbing mess.
"Da Mayor… waz just the farmer with a hat. Da Demon Lord waz just the farmer with a mustache." Summer glumly sniffled at me, like any of this meant something to me.
"Slow down- " I slid into the booth to comfort her, "What's bothering you?"
"The barmaid was the goddess, but wizout the wings and the glowy lights!" Summer complained into her drink
"Uhm… who broke up with you now?" I rubbed her shoulder to try to calm her
"I WAZ ABDUCTED BY FAERIES THE WHOLE TIME!" she slammed her mug for emphasis "Isekai obsessed fairies… The other swordsman on my team…. Waz named Kirito! He WAZ JUST KIRITO."
Summer continued. "Grandma was right." Grandma did have a tendency to be right about these things. "The faeries tricked me… I had tropey-est isekai adventure ever! They made me do BEACH EPISODES! They told me it WAS A YEARLY HOLIDAY. I don't think medieval societies invented bikinis yet…"
I tried to calm her. "Its okay! It doesn't matter what kind of adventure you had! You're back now!" With a few pats, Summer seemed to calm down. Slowly, she seemed to be returning to her natural cheer, a state not unlike an excitable and innocent puppy.
Summer wiped a tear from her eye. "Really?"
"Really."
I helped Summer get up, and slowly moved her to my car.
Maybe another day I'll let her know that she exhibits a number of fae-touched qualities. And at a different time, tell her comical levels of clumsiness, which always leaves her ass-up on the ground on a daily basis, is not normal.
But those are revelations for other days.

The Lost and Found Child
The following remarkable story of five-year-old Haley and her incredibly helpful spirit friend was told to me at a book-signing event by the grandmother of the lost and found little girl. Grandma was the mother of one of my laser colleagues in Boulder, Colorado, where the event was held. The following is the story as she related it to me in 2008:
For years I had no reason to believe in a spirit world, but I had no reason not to, either. My granddaughter Haley had just turned six years old. She was a bright, only child with a reserved personality. [On Sunday, April 29, 2001] her grandfather and I thought she would enjoy a spring wildflower walk, and so we joined forces with three other adults for an outing. We decided to take a side trip to the Ozark Mountain Wilderness, one of our state’s most photogenic places, on the way to our wild flower walk.
Haley managed the easy downhill trail but resisted leaving because she wanted to go to a small waterfall partly down the cliff and high above the river below. In typical pouty child fashion she insisted on being carried back up the hill when we hurried her to stay on our schedule. Three of the adults went ahead while a friend stayed with me to move slowly forward at a pace Haley could easily overtake. A couple of glances back indicated she was coming our way; but, not wanting to start the pout again, we stayed out of her view. However, when I looked back a third time, she was not visible, nor did she come along after a short wait.
I decided she must have gone back to the falls, so I quickly returned, though I could not see her. A previously unnoticed side trail looked like a possible choice she might have taken, but soon I saw forking paths and dense foliage, which made it clear that she was dangerously separated from us. At this point the situation took on a life of its own.
Soon a massive search of the wilderness area began, including its many cliffs, tangled brush, and waterfalls. Eventually, it involved dogs, helicopters, and hundreds of people who were organized by the search-and-rescue officials in authority. Prayers were offered, and help of every conceivable nature was put into play. It was hard to believe that all this effort produced nothing, leaving us distraught and drained by the third day.
I went to a meeting of the American Society of Dowsers in nearby Fayetteville. There, one of America’s great dowsers, Harold McCoy, considered our desperate situation. He said that the little girl was “being taken care of by a kind woman” and that she would be “found by two men on horseback within the day.” [All these details were confirmed to me, Russell Targ, at a recent national dowsers’ conference, by Gladys McCoy, the wife of Harold. I am sorry to report that Harold McCoy died in 2010.]
In the afternoon of the third day, two local residents who knew the country well and owned mules had a hunch as to where Haley might have gone, and they decided to make their own search rather than be part of the large organized effort. After much effort, just as they were about to give up, they found her lying exhausted on a boulder at the edge of the river at the bottom of the cliff. After a very difficult trip out, they brought her to the hospital and safety.
As one might imagine, this story brought Haley and her family a great deal of attention, so they decided to take a little vacation to escape the glare of publicity. It was not until this time that Haley started talking about the friend she had made while lost. She said the little girl’s name was Elisha and that she was five years old. Elisha had come to Haley as soon as she was lost. Together they sang songs and played games, and Elisha acted as a guide to lead Haley down the bluff trail to the river through a very challenging ravine. The authorities had thought it was too difficult for a small child to manage this route wearing only a tee-shirt and flip-flops and so left it out of consideration.
While some children are known to have imaginary friends, this had never been the case with Haley. Nonetheless, Haley went on to describe her new playmate’s hair and clothing and drew pictures of her. I began to wonder if there had been an incident with a lost child in that remote area before and if there was a possibility of a spirit connection. After checking with authorities to learn about any legends or stories, I discovered that a child had been murdered and buried two decades earlier quite near to where Haley had been found. Fascinated by this information, I searched old newspapers and court records. [The grandmother was also a director of the local League of Women Voters.] Among these items in the possession of the authorities was a picture of the child’s mother, along with other photos of a religious cult. The cult members were accused and convicted of killing the child [whose name was Elisha] because the leader of the group, considered to be the “prophet,” had declared her possessed.
My search for the mother led me to the man who had served as the mother’s attorney. To my surprise, he had maintained contact with her, and he agreed to put us in touch with each other. The e-mails that followed were amazing to both of us. I learned that the month and very day that Haley was lost was the exact month and day that Elisha was buried. The name Haley gave for her friend was very close to a name Elisha had called herself. The hair and clothing styles Haley had drawn were distinctive of Elisha and the styles of the time at which Elisha had died. [Bell-bottoms and tie-died T-shirt.] Haley also told us about a silver flashlight that Elisha had at night and that Elisha had refused to let Haley hold it. I asked the mother if her daughter had had a flashlight, and she startled me with the following account:
Elisha had a Raggedy Ann doll that she always slept with. [A woman in the cult] took it away from her. I had a small silver flashlight that I kept in my room because Elisha was afraid of the dark. I had to work three jobs from early morning till late at night and I found out later that [the woman] would put Elisha in the room in the dark. After her doll was taken, Elisha began to sleep with the flashlight. I would wake up at night and find that she had it with her under the covers. She would cry when I would try to take it, and most of the time I let her have it.
After thinking about this possibility of a spirit child, I have wondered if Elisha was, in fact, the lure to attract Haley away from the adults and off the right path, rather than the means to save her. The canyon-trails part of this story has now been described in a privately published book, The Search for Haley: An Insider’s Account of the Largest Search Mission in Arkansas History, by photographer and trail guide Tim Ernst.
That’s the end of the Haley story, but it’s not the end of Harold McCoy’s exploits that year. In her recently published book Extraordinary Knowing, psychiatrist Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer tells the story of a lost-and-found harp that in its own way is as remarkable as the tale of Haley.
In December of 2001, Dr. Mayer’s eleven-year-old daughter Meg gave a harp concert at a hall in Oakland, California. In the course of festivities after this Christmas concert, someone stole her valuable, hand-carved harp from its resting place backstage. The daughter was heartbroken over her own carelessness as well as the loss of her precious instrument. Mayer writes, “For two months we went through every conceivable channel trying to locate the harp—instrument dealers, police, TV, Harp Society newsletters—nothing worked...
Finally a devoted friend suggested that I call a famous dowser—Harold McCoy, in Fayetteville, Arkansas,” which was a thousand miles away. Mayer called McCoy and told him her story. After a few moments of reflection he told her the harp was still in Oakland. He suggested that she send him a street map of Oakland, which is a large industrial city on the east side of San Francisco Bay. Two days later, McCoy called to say, “I’ve got the harp located. It’s in the second house on the right on D__ Street, just off L__ Avenue.”
Mayer found the house, but didn’t know how to proceed in this very run-down neighborhood. And the police wouldn’t help her to get a search warrant. After puzzling over what to do next, Mayer decided to post fliers within a two-block radius of the house. Two days later she got a call from a man who said that he had seen the flier and that his next-door neighbor had shown him the harp. After a series of circuitous phone calls the caller agreed to meet Mayer behind an all-night Safeway at 10:00 that evening. The harp was returned. And, as Mayer writes, “This changes everything.”

The one the only: Bidoof or Bibarel!
Tumblr media
Bidoof!!!! The Plump Mouse Pokemon! Even though it’s absolutely not a mouse! Just like many other “Mouse Pokemon”!
Bidoof is a Normal-type that most resembles a gopher, though in the context of its evolution Bibarel, it’s also kind of a tailless beaver. Like the numerous other early-game Normal-types throughout the franchise, it’s a pretty regular-looking rodent, with no real notable abilities or anything. That said, it does have teeth that grow at a very fast rate, said to grow as fast as Rattata’s. In order to manage those constantly-growing teeth, it chews on logs, trees, and boulders. This leads well into its more beaver-based evolution, and is a very solid concept for such a “normal” animal.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Bidoof was pretty widely disliked back in Gen IV. This may seem odd – it’s just a little rodent thing – but people just really hated designs that weren’t actively cute or badass back then. Bidoof just has a low-key silliness to it, and combined with its very high spawn rate across numerous routes of Sinnoh, it was easy for people to get annoyed by it. Like many once-disliked pokemon though, time has been kind to Bidoof, and it’s far more popular now than it was then. It’s a notably popular pokemon to photograph in New Pokemon Snap, appearing early on in the game and being highly photogenic.
Tumblr media
Last month, on July 1, there was even a franchise-wide “Bidoof Day” event: this involved a stream of Bidoof-containing episodes of the anime on Twitch, Bidoof-related content in the online TCG app and Pokemon Masters EX, the announcement of a limited Bidoof promo card, an extremely high spawn rate of Bidoof in Pokemon Go, and a line of Bidoof-themed merchandise at the US-based Pokemon Center store. All complete with an announcement video parodying Never Gonna Give You Up, which was originally posted on April Fool’s as part of a Bidoof takeover thing and they just kinda. Reused it.
Tumblr media
Even before this year, Bidoof was getting some positive attention. This mostly stemmed from its appearance in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness. You and your partner are the most-recent recruits to the Wigglytuff Guild, with Bidoof as your immediate senior. He’s portrayed as bumbling and inexperienced but very well-meaning, with a friendly and positive attitude, and provides optimistic commentary throughout the game in his personal journal. In the expanded version, Explorers of Sky, Bidoof is even playable in a prequel side story called “Bidoof’s Wish”, in which Bidoof goes exploring and meets the wish-granting Jirachi. Rather than wishing to become a great explorer, he simply wishes for a friend or two, which leads to him meeting the player and their partner when the game’s main story begins.
Tumblr media
Bidoof unfortunately has a rather boring shiny, though it’s not unpleasant. Its body is a bit brighter, and its snout has a subtle burgundy tinge to it; I think I like it a bit more than the base form even if it’s not that different. Still, a more drastic change would be appreciated.
Tumblr media
Bidoof has had quite a lot of history despite its status as a simple early-game rodent. In fact, I think the qualities that made it so unpopular during Gen IV are the exact same qualities that make it well-liked now. Bidoof isn’t powerful or majestic; it’s just simple, warm, and wholesome. It isn’t going to win many battles, but it’ll always be there for you. I’m quite fond of it, yup yup.
Friend-shaped/10.

Another very busy but very fun couple weeks over here!!!! what a change of pace from the every-day-the-same-blur the last couple months have been.
My parents birthdays are in late June/early July so I went back to Chicago to visit for those + the 4th. It’s been well over a year since I was last at my childhood home and I always miss the lake I grew up on sooooo much. Got to have a nice time kayaking around (pic 1) and enjoying the water lillies and frogs :)))) Also visited my extended family in rural western IL, my uncle is one of the 3 people that make up the towns entire historical preservation society, and they just finished moving/restoring a cute cabin and some equipment from when the area was first settled, which was neat (pic 2).
On the 3rd I went downtown to hang out with my childhood bffs + partners + my friend’s daughter on a beach on Lake Michigan (pic 3), and its the frist time i’ve been around so many people since 2020 and i’m definitely both rusty on the social skills as well as still feeling weirded out by groups now. It was a really hot day with cold water and good company and food though so while a shock to be back in such a weirdly “normal” setting I did still have a good time. And saw a couple of them again on the 4th at my house, and the neighbors across the lake set off a surprisingly good firework show (pic 4).
I also got to go visit @onionjuggler and her pups (pic 5 & 6 and oops forgot to take any of us together lmao)!!!!!! While this is not actually the first time we have met as we overlapped at the same college (and were both in the campus circus group no less), we reconnected on tumblr last summer bonding over Dragon Age & Mass Effect obsessions and it was soooooo nice to get to hang out irl as a follow up :)))))
Anyway I spent less than a week back in New Mexico frantically catching up on working + prepping for my following trip this past weekend. Also got to do some baking for a labmate’s post-thesis-defense party, it’s the first time I’ve been able to bake for other people in???? SO long and I missed it. Made doughnut muffins (not pictured) which are delicious but not photogenic and then mini fruit tartlets (pic 7) which taste good and are also very visually show-off-y. Happy to say they were a hit!
Anyway then friday night I drove over to AZ where a photographer couple I’ve worked with a few times before/kept in touch with just moved a few months ago (all the way from New Hampshire). Their new house has a pool so we arranged to do both some figure-on-landscape and figure photography plus also some underwater work! It’s been since last March since my last modeling gig and FOREVER since I’ve gotten to do any mermaid portraits, so it was very exciting to be able to get back to both. Spent the weekend running around jumping on rocks in improbable places with full face makeup + giant lashes lmao (pic 8) and on very little sleep since we were doing sunrise shots as well. I style/advertise myself as an “adventure model” able to get to trickier locations and do harder shoots than the average model, and Jay (the photographer) has done several with me before, so we also went to a location he knew he’d probably not be able to get another model able to reach as it involved an uphill 5 mile technical mountain bike ride followed by a mile of hiking while carrying our giant backpacking bags of camera equipment + outfit/makeup changes + 3 liters of water, all in 95º weather in midday desert sun lmao. The shots turned out SO good though, and I even got to jump in an ephemeral waterfall pool for a bunch of them, and then the mountain bike ride back down was SO fun, though I still had to walk a few bits since no way was I doing some of those technical rocky corners while in a 25lb pack. Bikes & some gear featured in pic 9 :D
Pic 10 is the view from one of the locations we shot at! Involved a technical scramble up the back of a boulder, but looked like a totally sheer face from the front--it’s gonna be super impressive in the final pics. I was wearing a dress made from an old repurposed parashute, so the skirt hangs way down over the rocks and will billow if there’s any breeze, which we did have a bit of. You can see the giant adventure van we roamed around in under a tree in the foreground. I’m really glad I was able to go out and get those because I actually woke up with a migraine saturday night and my rescue meds give me super weird dreams/make me fairly woozy, but luckily the migraine was a fairly small one by my standards and the meds had worn off enough that I could do the climbing stuff safely. But it did mean I only got like 3 hours of sleep after only 2 hours of sleep on friday so I was fairly exhausted. greem.jpg.
And the underwater stuff in the afternoon went really well to!!!! It’s soooo hard to tell if anythings turning out in the moment since you can’t really see on the viewfinder if things are working, but we got some AMAZING stuff I’m super excited to share once he finishes editing.
Drove home last night (sunday) however there was a HUGE monsoon stormfront. I’m glad becuase we need the rain desperately but for like an hour I had periods of almost no visibility (doing 40mph in a 75 zone with hazards on) and there was up to 2 inches of water on the road surface. So I stopped in a rest stop to nap for 2 hours until it cleared up. But I also hate naps and then slept weird once I got home at 3:30am so now I’m in a weird exhausted haze but also still kinda wired rip. But! Fun times and very much looking forward to a nice hot shower now that I’ve eaten and had an hour to just sit and breathe.

Llandudno is a suburb of Cape Town in Western Cape Province in South Africa. It is located only 18 km from the centre of Cape Town and approached by one of the most scenic drives, over Suikerbossie Hill from Hout Bay or in the other direction from Camps Bay, along Victoria Road, Llandudno lies nestled in a private and peaceful cove with one of the most secluded and beautiful beaches in the city. The Twelve Apostles stretch off to one side, whilst Little Lion’s Head and the Karbonkelberg Mountain sweep off in the other direction. The beautiful beach, renowned for its white sands, crisp blue waters and giant boulders is arguably one of the most photogenic in Cape Town.

Mutual Feelings Finale, [Revali x Reader]
Tumblr media
The castle walls shook violently as the ceilings slowly crumbled down into the halls. Passages were blocked with rubble as maids and knights looked desperately for the exits. You pushed through the frantic crowd, calling loudly for everyone to head in your direction. The air had turned red, the ash returned. People screamed as they separated from the many groups that scattered around the castle. Bursting through a window, you helped your group outside.
Guardians littered the area, all glowing a distinct red that had once been blue. Lasers shot from their eyes, blasting the castle and surrounding town. You watched in horror as everything you had known was diminished to nothing Flying guardians let down drones that attacked anything and everything they saw.
“What do we do?” One of the maids screamed, only to be hushed by another who quickly clasped her hand over her mouth.
“We need to get to the wall.” You pointed to a line of knights that was leading a group behind the stone structures. The wall was the safest bet for escaping Castle Town.
“Look!” One of the kitchen staff held their hand over their agape mouth as everyone’s eyes took to Medoh in the distance. Revali was up there. Your heart beat fast as you thought of him. You hadn’t spoken to him since you installed the final update.
“Please, Hylia.” You whispered, eyes glued to Medoh as it roared and fired countless shots at some invisible attacker. 2
In that moment, you were blinded by a flash of blue and white light. Medoh let out a final screech as it fell. Dust rose into the sky in a cloud from where the Beast fell. Red hot tears streamed from your eyes, cutting fine lines through the dirt that was layered on your face. You didn’t care who saw you cry in that moment. You had hoped so badly that things would have turned out differently.
“The Champions!” Calls came from another group that was now running in all directions. “We’re all going to die.”
You wiped your face, gripping tightly to your necklace as you recollected yourself. “Come on!” You commanded, gaining the attention of your group. “The wall! Now!”
Maneuvering your way through the line of guardians was difficult, but doable. As long as you ran in unpredictable lines, you’d be fine. Time seemed to slow as you made a final bolt for the wall where a knight was yelling something incomprehensible. Your ears rang from the constant sounds of explosions and loud shrill voices. You stood aside as everyone rushed in, only entering once you were sure everyone was safe.
“We’re leading groups to Hateno. You need to get yourselves out of here. Follow the knight in charge and do not stray from what you are told.”
“Mannery?” You turned from the continual chaos outside to catch the eye of a familiar friend.
“[Name], you need to get out of here.” He grabbed your shoulders firmly, giving you a small shake. “The Champions are all done for. The Beasts fell.”
“Where’s Zelda?”
“We have no idea.” His voice shook as he continually scanned behind you. “We aren’t sure where Link is either.” You had never seen him in this state. He was always so calm and collected.
“So, we failed?” You wanted to cry. You wanted desperately to let all the emotions and feelings you had bottled up forever spill out from the gates. “What are we even supposed to do? The guardians will make it to Hateno eventually.”
“We have to do what we can now and what we can do is get you all out of here.” He shook you slightly. “You have to go with them.”
“Where are Purah and Robbie?”
“[Name], you have to go.” Mannery directed. “I’ll see you there and we can talk then.”
“No!” You shook yourself from his grasp. “I’m not leaving. I’m not going to live knowing the Calamity is still out there!” You backed away. “It’s over, Mannery. Get everyone else out.”
Revali waited alongside Urbosa, Mipha, and Daruk as Link and Zelda ventured into Lanayru in search of yet another spring. At this point, he was sick of waiting.
“Why must we be present if we cannot even assist?” Revali grumbled as he crossed his arms over his chest. The necklace he wore shifted under his feathers.
“The princess needs us here.” Urbosa reminded him. “If you want to get back to [Name] so badly, why don’t you just bring her next time?”
“I wouldn’t dare bore her with something like this.” He commented.
Time passed slowly as the group found ways to distract themselves. Daruk was breaking every rock he could find, replacing the boulders with a smile as he triumphantly held the rubble in his hands. Urbosa was patient, standing firmly in the spot she was left in. Mipha watched Daruk, giving him an encouraging clap when he broke each rock.
Revali stood alone with his leg kicked up against a tree stump. He fumbled around with the necklace strung into his chest piece. It was far too small to fit around his neck. The stone inside of it slid through his fingers, softly bouncing from the silkiness of his feathers.
“Where’d you get that?” Urbosa piped up, only now moving from her spot.
“It was [Name]’s.”
“I didn’t realize the two of you had taken your relationship so far.” She quipped.
“We,” he shot her an exasperated glance, “never mind.”
“Flustered?” She laughed.
When the ground shook, the Champions braced themselves. It was time. Everyone took off in their own directions to get to their stations. Revali took to the skies as he soared toward the village. He swallowed hard as his mind wandered to you. Hopefully, you’d be okay.
“Everyone’s out!” You yelled to a knight who was guiding the last few survivors outside of the castle grounds.
“Good!” He called back. “Come on!”
“I’m going to do one more round! Go on ahead! I’ll catch up!”
Climbing back through the window you had broken, you found the halls eerily silent. The guardians had moved on like you expected, only inhabiting the outside and a few of the larger rooms. Your room remained untouched. Combing through your papers, you closed your books and blew out the candles. Revali’s ceremony gear was still sitting on your floor where you had left it. Smiling, you picked up the ribbons that had been braided into his hair and felt a pang in your chest. You’d never see him again. At least, not in this life.
The photo you had been excluded from made you happy. It was so chaotic, yet so true to the Champion’s dynamic. Daruk had the biggest, goofiest smile on his face as he smashed everyone together in one of his famous group hugs. Mipha and Link looked shocked to all get out. Urbosa was as photogenic as ever. Zelda looked absolutely horrified and Revali had a brief moment of vulnerability.
Your desk chair creaked as you sat down on it, listening as the chaos outside died down. Opening your window, you peered out to examine the absolute destruction Castle Town was left in. A crack above was the only warning you got.
Tumblr media
Zelda sealed away the Calamity as Link was carried into the Shrine of Resurrection. The remaining survivors had managed to make it to Kakariko and then on to Hateno. When the Calamity had been defeated, the land seemed to halt where it was left. Slowly, over time, things returned to a new normal. Monster camps still littered the paths where travelers walked, and merchants sold their goods. People slowly forgot about the disaster that the Calamity was. Grass grew over old buildings, vines crept up the castle walls, and new pools of water gathered in the underground.
The population of Hyrule vastly diminished after the Calamity. A few small settlements popped up here and there, but it was nothing like it had once been. Life slowly came back to the land as things were rebuilt. Looters thoroughly explored the castle and abandoned buildings, taking anything and everything, they deemed valuable.
100 years passed.
And finally, the Beasts clamored back to life.
Tumblr media
Waking up after 100 years was quite the shocker to the system. Especially when everything from your past was shrouded in a haze. Unknowing of what happened, he stepped cautiously out from the chamber and examined the strange technology that surrounded him. A blue hue was emanating from the walls, the light barely flickering on and off as an invisible pull called for him from further within. An obelisk stood at the front of the terminal, its light similar to that of the walls. Sensing a presence, it responded.
The many doors and entryways opened, flooding the area with a blinding light. He walked cautiously to the exit.
“Haven’t you seen that thing?” The locals pointed to the Beast that now stood tall from its once dormant state. A roar echoed throughout the valleys, bouncing off of the highest Hebra peaks, and rolling down to the large barren fields of Hyrule.
“It’s weird, right?”
“Should we go check it out?”
“No, we need to go talk to Teba.”
“What about the Elder?” The local earned an annoyed smack to the head. “Of course, we’re going to tell him too.”
As the group of locals strode up the steps, they stopped dead in their tracks when they reached the famously named “Revali’s Landing.” There, upon the old cedar wood, stood a Prussian blue bird – one that they didn’t initially recognize. He watched blankly over the land he assumed he once knew, admiring how the earth had swallowed the destruction of the Calamity. The royal garb was draped over his shoulder, the unmistakable blue was almost reflective in the morning sun.
“Revali?” A local called quietly, earning the attention of the bird on the landing. He turned; eyes wide.
“Yes?”
The other Champions awoke slowly, all having holes and missing pieces in their recollection of the past. They remembered one another. Memories flooded back in bits and spurts with the recognition of an old statue, a broken building, or a particular relic passed down through generations.
“Here.” The Rito Elder smiled as he pressed Revali’s bow back into the hands of its rightful owner. “I believe this is yours.”
Days passed as Link traveled from one corner of Hyrule to the next, reuniting his friends and working to recover his own past. Revali explored Medoh as if for one of the first times, attempting to retrace his steps during the last few moments he could recall. He traveled to the Flight Range. He spoke with all the new inhabitants of the village and learned of the ongoings while he was away.
Once the Calamity had perished for the final time, the true final time, Revali and the rest of the Champions assisted in the revival of Hyrule Castle. Large boulders were taken to the town below for new buildings, rubble was piled where the prison once stood, and floors and ceilings were sealed over with wood.
“How much do you remember?” Zelda addressed the group after a long day of construction. They sat in the dining hall, a basket of fresh food sat between them.
“My father and brother have helped a lot.” Mipha commented, “I cannot believe how much Sidon has grown.”
Daruk clapped Mipha on the back, earning a cough as she adjusted herself. “Yunobo filled me in! Lots ‘sa strength in that little guy!”
“Riju is quite the leader in Gerudo. She’s handled the place wonderfully.”
The group turned to Revali who had been tending to his bow. They watched expectantly as he tore his gaze from the painted wood long enough to shrug and return to what he was doing. “I don’t have any ancestors in the Village. So, you could say I’m a bit behind on the gossip here in Hyrule.” He grumbled, “Not that I’d really care.”
“What about [Name]?” Mipha asked hesitantly.
“Who?” He rubbed at a spot where the paint had chipped, tearing it from the wood and discarding it at his feet. Zelda grasped as the Shiekah Slate, snatching it from Link’s hands as she scrolled through the old photos still stored in its deepest memories.
“[Name],” Zelda repeated, shoving the photo into his hands, “she has a room around here. I’m not sure if we’ve found it yet.”
Revali looked over the photo. It was a group shot. He remembered that day. The Champions had just been sworn in and were outside with that squealy little scientist who insisted on taking a group photo. In the background of one of the practice shots stood a familiar figure. The darkened eyes, the shaky hands, and the armfuls of loose papers could only be one person. One person he had forgotten about.
Ignoring the others calls, he headed straight for where he remembered her room to be, zigzagging through the maze that was the castle halls. He opened the door, only to be met with a pile of rubble. The room looked much smaller than it really was. A carpet from above hung down through the opening, swaying slightly from the window that stood open.
Cautiously, he stepped into the room and began rifling through anything that could lead him to your whereabouts. He opened a book that he knew you worked in frequently. Resurrection = possibility? His eyes scanned the page.
You sat at your desk in the dead of night, an empty cup of black tea sitting on the corner of your desk. Its contents had been emptied hours ago, but you were too deep into your work to refill it.
“A chamber exists on the plateau for the Hero of Hyrule in the case that he would require resurrection for the possibility of revival at a later date. Champions?” You scribbled quick sketches of the Champions in the notebook, attempting to estimate their measurements. “Should the Divine Beasts sense serious threat to their Champions, they’ll enter a lockdown mode.” Another sketch of the interworking’s of the terminals was drawn. “Each Champion will be placed in their own chamber-of-sorts while the defense systems take care of the threat. When the threat is registered to be gone, the Beasts will wake, and the Champions will as well.”
At the top of the page you wrote in big letters, “Calamity Overtake Plan.”
Something cracked beneath his foot. Moving aside the rubble, he found the necklace he had given you; the resin that encased the feather had broken and yellowed. Despite his knowing that Hylian life expectancy wasn’t nearly 100 years, he had hoped to some higher power that you were around. He just wished it wasn’t how he found you.
The Village had been colder than usual as the seasons changed ever so slightly as fall faded into winter. Wind gusts from the mountains chilled the night that was filled with crisp cool air. Revali spent nights like these patrolling the Village alone. He particularly liked to spend his hours just outside Warbler’s Nest where a few plots of graves stood.
“Revali?” A voice called from behind him. It was Saki, Teba’s wife. “Who are you here to visit?”
“A few old friends.” He motioned to the four stones that stood within feet of one another.
“You knew my grandma and grandpa?”
“Quite well.” An awkward cough escaped his lips as he crossed his arms over his chest. “We were good friends.”
“They always told me stories about you and [Name] when I was little. I didn’t realize you actually knew who they were.” She laughed. “I guess that’s kind of dumb of me! Well, I guess I’ll leave you to it.” She pat him on the shoulder before taking off back toward her home.
“Yeah.” Revali said at no louder than a whisper. He turned to your grave, a small smile on his face as he laid the repaired necklace gently on to the stone. “[Name],” he tilted his head skyward to blink back the tears that formed in the corners of his eyes, “you single-handedly saved Hyrule.”
After a moment of pacing, he sat down. “There’s a lot I never told you.” He inhaled deeply; tears began to roll down his face as he exhaled. “We’ll go on that adventure someday. When it’s all over, we will. I promise you that.”
As he stood and recollected himself, he spoke once more. “We’ll have another chance, in the next life. And I’ll sweep you off your feet the same way I did before.” He let out an airy laugh. “With my dashing good looks, of course.”
“Goodnight” He whispered, taking a final look at the grave. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
These were he nights Revali cherished most. Not because of the weather, nor the lack of people pestering him. Not because of the visitation to your grave, the one-sided conversations he shared, or the time he spent reading entries from your many journals to you.
Instead it was the sensation of you being there beside him. It was the spark he felt when he closed his eyes. It was the whispers he heard when he told you he loved you. It was those lingering moments when he could close his eyes and imagine things were how they were supposed to be.
Some nights, if he squinted, he could have sworn he saw four blue figures near your grave. The sound of familiar laughter and conversation would ring through his eardrums as the liveliness of the village died down. He smiled at the sounds of Keumi scolding her mother for something trivial, the sounds of Seoi telling a story, and the sounds of Junil critiquing a training group of Rito warriors. Most of all, he smiled at the sounds of your laughter. He could hear the smile on your face, the real joy in your voice, and the relaxed tone of each and every word you said.
You were finally at peace.

What to Expect
The Similan Islands and its Whale Sharks! Liveaboard trip in this area is one of the best scuba diving experiences you will find in Thailand. Its huge granite boulders with caverns and arches, lush greenery and white sand beaches ring the nine islands, completing the view from above water. The marine ecology in this area is unparalleled, colourful schools of fish, coral reefs, and endangered species that welcome divers like the Whale Sharks or Manta Rays. Look out for such photogenic little critters as ghost pipefish, sea moths, frogfish, ribbon eels and many different nudibranchs. Koh Tachai and Koh Bon, members of the Similan Island National Park, are visited en-route to Richelieu Rock in the Surin Marine Park, and offer more Pelagics, Napoleon Wrasse and Night Diving for Macro-Critters.
Whatever your scuba diving pleasure might be, the Similan and Surin Marine Parks are the dive destinations that will satisfy your desires and give you the trip of a lifetime
