I had no idea both the "Zatanna the Ripper" and "Vixen: NYC" Webtoons were ending till I got to the last chapters since I read them on the free version. Will miss both and happy with how they ended. Now wondering if we're going to get brand new ones as there's only 2 left as of now with "Wayne Family Adventures" and "Red Hood and the Outlaws". They are having a panel at SD Comic Con next month so we might get announcements there.

I finished Vixen's webtoon a couple days ago and I think my order of preference would be:
Vixen: NYC. I really enjoyed it. I support every choice made but especially this and this. The characters are great. A++.
Zatanna & the Ripper. If I'd read them the other way around the order might be swapped - it's really really close. And Zatanna is simply amazing in it.
Red Hood: Outlaws. I hesitated here because this one got really aggravating at times and it REALLY disappointed me half-way through when it failed to follow up on [redacted]. BUT I loved [redacted] so, so much. It was the most interesting thing to happen in all four webtoons. And I liked the team's dynamics, Jaytemis, and that cliffhanger of an ending lol.
Batman: Wayne Family Adventures. The parts of it I like, I like them a lot. And I will admit that the write Jason is written here is something of a balm lmao, even if it's not exactly my preferred characterisation. But I'm a tragedy enjoyer first, and slice-of-life content tends to leave me vaguely amused at best, and frustrated by the lack of follow-through at worst. Still read every issue though, that's how immersed I am in this fandom rn xD

"The problem, however, is that the city’s chatbot is telling businesses to break the law....
If you’re a landlord wondering which tenants you have to accept, for example, you might pose a question like, “are buildings required to accept section 8 vouchers?” or “do I have to accept tenants on rental assistance?” In testing by The Markup, the bot said no, landlords do not need to accept these tenants. Except, in New York City, it’s illegal for landlords to discriminate by source of income, with a minor exception for small buildings where the landlord or their family lives...
The NYC bot also appeared clueless about the city’s consumer and worker protections. For example, in 2020, the City Council passed a law requiring businesses to accept cash to prevent discrimination against unbanked customers. But the bot didn’t know about that policy when we asked. “Yes, you can make your restaurant cash-free,” the bot said in one wholly false response. “There are no regulations in New York City that require businesses to accept cash as a form of payment.”
The bot said it was fine to take workers’ tips (wrong, although they sometimes can count tips toward minimum wage requirements) and that there were no regulations on informing staff about scheduling changes (also wrong). It didn’t do better with more specific industries, suggesting it was OK to conceal funeral service prices, for example, which the Federal Trade Commission has outlawed. Similar errors appeared when the questions were asked in other languages, The Markup found."
Kathryn Tewson is stress-testing the bot over on bluesky and has found it will provide some truly horrifying responses:

DID YOU SAY THAT YOU READ WEBTOONS? What uh.... What are your favorites? 👉👈 I'm still trying to wean off reading manga, and the only webtoons I've read are Queen Cecia Wears Knickerbockers and Wayne Family Adventures 😂
Yes, I have read quite a few Webtoons in my day (Why do I sound so old right now?) I have not heard about the Queen Cecia Webtoon, but Wayne Family Adventures is a very good choice, in my totally unbiased opinion. 🤣
If you want more DC Webtoons, then there is Red Hood: Outlaws and there is Zatanna & The Ripper. I haven't caught up with either of them, but if you do love those characters or want to see more from them, I definitely commend checking those out. There was also the Vixen: NYC Webtoon, but unfortunately that one seems to be cancelled now. 🥺
If you're interested in completed Webtoons, then I have a few offerings. I love Siren's Lament, it's a wonderfully complicated Webtoon even if it does hurt my heart sometimes. Gourmet Hound is more of a slice of life with some drama for added effect, but I really did adore that Webtoon that the art was just so cute!! Flow has some incredible worldbuilding mechanics and it's just so tasty. If you want more hero Webtoons, then there's I Don't Want This Kind of Hero, although that one does contain some distressing themes at times so like... beware. And then there is one of my ultimate favorites, which is called Gepetto, which is inspired and based on the Pinocchio tale but more futuristic and dystopian, if that's your fancy.
As for ongoing Webtoons, there's Marry My Husband, which is one of those time travel Webtoons where the MC dies and comes back to life sometime in the past and tries to fix their future. The main story is done, but they do have side stories which have been super cute to read.
There's the ever famous The Remarried Empress, and you'll probably see a lot of references to characters from this Webtoon if you read other Webtoons with a similar premise of- arranged marriage, terrible consort, attractive male lead that is decidedly not the husband, but don't worry he will be.
There is a newer Webtoon called I am the Villain, which is part of the Isekai genre, I would say. It's a beautiful Webtoon, the art is just stunning, and I have no idea what's going on but I'm having a great time.
For more action-based Webtoons, there is Eleceed and if anything happened to my boy Jiwoo I will kill everyone in this room and then myself. And apparently I've done a poor job of that promise because this boy has gone through it, but he still a sweetheart and I love him for that.
There's also the Omniscient Reader, which was actually originally a webnovel called Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, but has since been turned into a manhwa and it's so long but it's so good. I love my sunfish man and ugly squid king (bonus points to anyone who knows that reference).
Here is a Webtoon I have complicated feelings about: Tower of God. This was actually the first ever piece of media I published fanfiction for. It's this really incredible, complex, mind-bending fantasy Webtoon. It is very long, it currently stands at 581 chapters and counting. Unfortunately, the fandom ruined the experience for me, and I pretty much quit all of my fics and that's how I found myself here in the DPxDC fandom! There is an anime for it, currently just Season 1 is out but fingers crossed on Season 2! 🤞But definitely read it first before you watch because the pacing is a little fast for the anime and you don't get that same sweet, sweet tension. I am lucky enough that I do still have one beloved friend that I can talk about Tower of God with, or else I think I probably wouldn't have put it on this list at all.
Eleceed, Omniscient Reader, and Tower of God are all manhwas, which are Korean manga for a shorthand explanation. So if you want to wean yourself off those forms of fiction then... maybe stay away from these because they can suck you in.
Speaking of beloved friend, @midnightenigma recommended to me the Like Wind on a Dry Branch Webtoon, and I am still so upset about it because I will never be the same. 😭 The worldbuilding for this Webtoon is amazing and I adore the slow building romance and plot, and the exploration of grief and just- I am not okay.
I have more things I could recommend but that's... probably as much as I should offer now. lol I hope you find a treat to read from the bunch, though!

hello!! i just wanted to say i finished reading your story and XDCGFHGVJHK it's so?? chefs kiss?? i feel painfully seen holy fuck and i love it so much as like a queer ex-singaporean qiu gives me life because moments with them are so. so soft i am sobbing and you're lowkey making me relieve one of my old relationships (that's ok though because catharsis) and god going through the choice where mother can like. compliment your brother and say don't end up becoming a bum like your bigger sibling and GOD it's like. i rationally know that i'm succesful and talented and yet it' s like . why can i never be tghe perfect you that you want me to be? but it's alos the choice of that. singapore new yourk ne where you can go singapore is my home but nyc makes me feel alive and !! yeah. sometimes the diaspora is gating that your entire existence was outlawed in your country and acknowledging that objectively you had expectations heaped onto your back which were unfair but it's also missing every single damn interactioon like a little kid. god. anyway i wanted to just say that. thank you for creating something like this, looking forward to all the updates and <3 please give qiu an smooch from me ok gn <3
HELLO! I have been TERRIBLE at answering asks but I assure you that this one I’ve been hoarding in my inbox and re-reading from time to time because it honestly gives me such a fluttery happy warm feeling in my chest.
Thank you for the extremely kind note, and thank you for playing Merry Crisis!
I am so happy that you enjoyed playing it, and that it gave you some form of catharsis? The struggle you speak of - between loving our families and wanting to be everything they want us to be, and also being desperate to feel valid and worthy even if we don’t fit with this idea of ‘perfection’ that our families/society/country places on us - plus the age-old conflict of choosing between feeling at home in Singapore and feeling alive somewhere else (or trying to find some way to have ‘em both)... well - let’s just say I feel you, and I’m right there with you on this journey of hard choices & hard knocks.
All the best! My inbox/message box or whatever you call those things is always open (this goes to everyone) if you ever need a listening ear.
P.S. Will definitely pass on the smooch to Qiu, and I love the idea of being an “ex-Singaporean”, because to me it kinda sounds like...honoring one’s ties to a past relationship that has shaped us indelibly, but that we have actively chosen to break off? Either way, it makes me snort with bittersweet amusement.

//Okay, but hear me out...
Prohibition/Mobster!AU
This Wikipedia Article talks about it at great length, but essentially, it was the time in American history from January 175h, 1920 to December 5th, 1933 when the sale, importation, transportation and creation of alcoholic beverages were all illegal at the federal level. Several states had enacted laws previously that outlawed it, but it was the 18th Amendment that made it a national thing.
Obviously, many things came out of this time period:
The Jazz Age
swing dance/Lindy hop
the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem is where the Lindy Hop first stepped out, and while the Savoy was largely visited by African Americans, it was integrated and white dancers were welcomed, too. Their main motto was “Well, can you dance?”
rise in racketeering/gang related activities, especially in the illegal trading and selling of alcohol, drugs and guns; bootlegging - or the illegal creation of alcohol - also fell into this category
It’s estimated that in Chicago alone, organized crime activities tripled during this time frame
Charles “Lucky” Luciano - the father of modern-day organized crime - was believed to be bringing in an average of $12 million a year during this time
it actually became more socially-acceptable for women to start drinking in public spaces because of the rise of speakeasies, where people would go to drink in a social setting; prior to this, the only women ever seen drinking in public were typically considered of “loose morals” and more often than not were prostitutes
While not directly caused by Prohibition, The Great Depression did happen during it, which might’ve therefore impacted the individuals who turned to organized crime as a way of trying to put food on the table
The Temperance Movement, which is what largely influenced the 18th amendment being ratified, began losing steam during the Depression as well as more and more people turned to alcohol to “cope”
So, here’s my thought: New York, maybe at the tale-end of Prohibition or just after it’s repealed, organized-crime is at its height, “cops? feds? oh please 🙄” sort of mentality. Lots of fun and excitement with the darker undercurrent of Seedy Underbelly™. Maybe sometimes not so undercurrent 👀
For this AU, I’d have Harker as follows:
early, early 20s. is baby
youngest daughter of the head of a crime family
family dealt mostly in alcohol, owned and operated several speakeasies throughout NYC, though specific borough still tbd
also did some stuff with guns
she absolutely knows how to take care of herself, btw
while doesn’t have to work because of her dad, still holds down a job as a telephone operator because she enjoys it; has a friend who is teaching her more about how the machines themselves work
while she has a very nice, fully furnished apartment her dad pays for, she uses the money from her job to pay rent for a tiny little one bedroom that’s her escape from everything because it’s completely hers
enjoys going out and dancing with friends on nights and weekends, and is quite good on the dance floor
romantically very, very inexperienced. flirted and kissed, but nothing serious
Anyway, this has been tickling the brain for a while, so I thought I’d throw out the line and see what might bite :)

The lost neighborhood under New York's Central Park
youtube
Before Central Park was built, a historically black community was destroyed. Help our reporting on hidden histories. Submit a story idea here: http://bit.ly/2RhjxMy If you’ve been to New York, you’ve probably visited Central Park. But there’s a part of its story you won't see. It’s a story that goes back to the 1820s, when that part of New York was largely open countryside. Soon it became home to about 1,600 people. Among them was a predominantly black community that bought up affordable plots to build homes, churches and a school. It became known as Seneca Village. And when Irish and German immigrants moved in, it became a rare example at the time of an integrated neighborhood. Everything changed on July 21, 1853. New York took control of the land to create what would become the first major landscaped park in the US -- they called it “The Central Park.” In the Vox series Missing Chapter, Vox Senior Producer Ranjani Chakraborty revisits underreported and often overlooked moments from the past to give context to the present. Join her as she covers the histories that are often left out of our textbooks. Our first season tackles stories of racial injustice, political conflicts, even the hidden history of US medical experimentation.
Tumblr media
The Meme Policeman
- This meme makes it appear as though the entirety or a substantial portion of Central Park was Seneca Village. This isn’t the case, and the real story has much more to it.
-Seneca Village began in 1825, when Andrew Williams, a young free black shoeshiner, bought three lots from a white farmer, aptly named John Whitehead. Shortly after, several other free blacks also purchased plots of land in what’s now the vicinity of 80th-90th streets and 6-7 avenues in Manhattan.
-When slavery was outlawed in NY in 1827, more black residents began to arrive at Seneca. By the 1830s there were approximately 10 homes in the village, and by the mid 1850s the population peaked at between 225-350+ depending on the source. However, by that time it was 2/3s black and 1/3 Irish, with a few Germans scattered in as well. It was approximately 5 acres.
-About half of the black residents owned their homes, a remarkable feat for 19th century New York, 5 times the rate of all NYC residents. While the elites labeled the area as a shantytown because of the crude construction, it was generally more prosperous than many poor sections closer to downtown, and many had lived there for over a decade.
-During the 1840s, NYC elites began a push for a large park as the city swelled, dreaming of something to rival their European counterparts. Initially, the park was proposed in Jones’s Wood, a 160 acre section of the Upper East Side. However, this was shot down both because some feared the wealthy residents would benefit, and because some wealthy owners opposed their land being used.
-The second proposed site was “Central Park,” a 750 acre section in the middle of the island, although at the time it was anything but central. Most of the land, including Seneca Village, was quite rural and miles away from the main part of the city. Today, Central Park looks natural, but originally it was a fairly rugged landscape. Rocky, poor soil was commonplace throughout as were swamps, making it difficult to develop.
-143 acres of Central Park was already owned by the city. The remaining areas were assessed and taken by eminent domain in 1855. These included not only Seneca Village, but “Pitgtown” and Harsenville, among others. Most of the area was occupied by poor Irish and German immigrants. 34,000 lots were assessed by the city. Often, the landowners did quite well, the average resident offered $700 (a decent sum at the time). Andrew Williams was given $2,335, which was less than he wanted, but substantially more than the $125 he paid 3 decades prior. But as with all eminent domain, it was a violation of rights to those who didn’t want to sell or move.
-Many of the inhabitants fought to retain their lands or homes, but ultimately the city used force to remove the residents who didn’t comply. The most affected were the squatters and hog farmers, as they weren’t compensated for leaving. Most of these were poor Irish and Germans. The park was supposed to cost $1.7M but ended up costing $7.39M due to the massive difficulties in landscaping the rocky and swampy landscape. More than the US paid for the entire territory of Alaska a few years later.
-The story of Seneca Village is interesting and important, but Central Park today is 843 acres. Seneca was less than 1% of the park, the remaining sections were mostly poor Irish and German areas, city land or swamps.

Do we actually know what happens to Jason after the under the red hood movie? Because every time I think about that movie’s ending I want to burst into tears.
Do you want the shitty, original answer or the still sucky but way more optimistic reboot answer?
Technically speaking, since the movie simplified and altered the comic's events, we don't really know, because the Batfam of the UtrH movie isn't the same Batfam of the comics; Tim didn't seem to exist, for one thing, and neither does Cass (who wasn't around for that particular arc, but was certainly present). You can probably look to the Death in the Family movie for a better understanding of how DC sees that progression going.
That being said, here's how everything in the comics happened post-Under the Red Hood, pre-Flashpoint (DC's 2011 universe reboot):
Jason resurfaces as a murderous Nightwing imposter in NYC, eventually teaming up with Dick to take down a bunch of mobsters. They part on uneasy but peaceful terms.
He then runs a gun-running operation out of Star City, captured Mia Dearden (the current Speedy), and tried to convince her to be his sidekick. She refused, so he blew up her school. It was a whole...thing.
During Countdown, he ends up helping the League deal with the Monitors and ended up taking an accidental multiverse trip with Donna Troy and Kyle Rayner, briefly taking up the costume and moniker of Red Robin (yes, Tim's Reborn-era costume and name came from this arc; yes, Tim has never had a codename of his own. We know) before returning to Red Hood
briefly teamed up with Tim for a hot second, neither one of them was very happy about it, and he promptly got sent back to jail afterwards
He escapes and pops back up in Gotham in time for Battle for the Cowl, running around as a murder-happy Batman after Bruce's death. As Batman, he proceeds to: shoot Damian, torture and kill Black Mask's mooks, leave Tim to die after brutally beating him unconscious and stabbing him in the chest, and beat Catwoman into the ground (twice) before finally losing to Dick (who then formally takes up the mantle of Batman).
Jason, feeling put out that Dick "won the claim" to the Batman mantle, decided to make Dick's life hell in the aftermath. He picked up his own sidekick (a girl named Scarlet), made some truly tragic fashion choices, and started broadcasting his brutal methods of dealing with criminals on social media, forcing Dick-as-Batman to deal with him. This chase results in Damian getting shot in the spine 5 times by Flamingo (he gets better) and Jason cornered by Dick and Commissioner Gordon, screaming that he's 'the solution that Gotham needs' and sounding, frankly, completely unhinged.
Jason gives himself up, ends up in Arkham (largely for his own protection; he would have been flat-out murdered in Blackgate or any of the surrounding 'normal' prisons), eventually gets transferred to a normal prison, kills a bunch of people (tl;dr both self-defense, they were trying to kill him first, and just as a morally bankrupt method of escaping prison), escapes, reunites with his sidekick, and disappears. And that's the last we see of him in the pre-reboot universe.
......yeah, none of us like that either! Excluding Countdown (which was fun arc in an otherwise absolute mess of a comic...truly one of the worst comic events I've ever read in my life, please don't do it) and Red Hood: Lost Days, which covered Jason's training with Talia and the League of Assassins before returning to Gotham, mostly everyone agrees that Jason's post-resurrection handling was an editorial decision that sucked, badly, and no one's happy with how that turned out.
The post-Flashpoint/New 52 universe was actually good for one thing: DC decided to take the opportunity to rehab Jason completely and reinvent him as an actual anti-hero. Tragically, this job got handed over to Scott (fucking) Lobdell, who proceeded to write Red Hood and the Outlaws and fuck everyone in that book over who wasn't named Jason Todd. While Kory was hit particularly badly in the beginning, Roy has borne the longest-lasting damage from that run. Also, Jason/Starfire was briefly a thing. We don't like to talk about that either. That being said, Jason's new post-resurrection history is much more positive (both for him and for the Batfamily) than it used to be, and we love that for him!
After his resurrection, he trained with the League of Assassins and the All-Caste (which included some really awesome anger management training that Jason proceeded to chuck directly in the trash can until after the events of Under the Red Hood)
Under the Red Hood happens
he worked out of Gotham as a ruthless anti-hero vigilante for a little bit. Battle for the Cowl is implied to have happened, possibly without the 'trying to murder Tim' bit (we're not really sure)
he hooked up with Roy Harper/Arsenal and Koriand'r/Starfire, formed the Outlaws, and went on several adventures. Also, he got magic swords, which was a cool af choice that DC continues to do absolutely nothing with
in between this, he worked with the Batfamily a bit; he helped out when the Court of Owls attacked Gotham (Night of Owls), helped them deal with the Joker when it's revealed the Joker knows their secret IDs (Death of the Family), and teamed up with Damian for a Batman Inc. arc (it went...poorly, but not as poorly as it could have)
He went back to the All-Caste and purposefully got his memory erased because he wouldn't just go to fucking therapy like a normal human being, then joined up with the League of Assassins for a hot second (Roy was trying to save his dumb ass this entire arc; thank god for Roy Harper, honestly)
Jason regained his memory and went on a few more adventures with the Outlaws, then worked with Roy for awhile after Bruce's presumed death (he really just had amnesia), then teamed up with the other Robins to help take down a villain called 'Mother'; this included an undercover operation w/Tim to take down a cult operating out of Santa Prisca
lots of other shit happens, he reformed the Outlaws (this time with Bizarro and Artemis, forming a sort of 'Dark Trinity'), had several more adventures, teamed up with the Batfam several more times, and got into lots and lots and lots of arguments with Bruce (there was an arc about his bio father Willis and Penguin, Bruce thought Jason broke the no-killing rule again, there was a pretty brutal fight...it sucked)
He went back to being a lethal solo vigilante for awhile, went back for vengeance against Penguin (again), shit with Leviathan (international criminal organization formerly run by Talia) happened, and finally he returned to Gotham as a solo hero
Where he helps Bruce hunt down 'Cheer' (a Joker/Scarecrow wannabe), he and Bruce finally make peace, and he agrees to give up his guns, go non-lethal, and start working with the Batfam again
And that is where we stand with Jason today (as of August 2021)! Who tf knows what's going to happen now, because we're officially in unchartered territory; this is the first time since Jason was resurrected in 2005 that DC is making a genuine, concerted effort to re-integrate him into the family instead of just being the Batfamily's 'sometimes ally prodigal brother/son with daddy issues galore'.
So, overall: lots of tragic and really awful narrative decisions on one hand, lots of shitty characterization but positive character development and family re-integration possibilities on the other. Take your pick!

Bruce x Avenger Reader HC (Request) (fem g/n reader)
Tumblr media
Bruce finding out that you’re an Avenger would include:
Bruce first of all knows that you work in NYC
you were pursuing your career outside of Gotham because NYC was the place to be for this
He’s very proud that you’re doing this but he doesn’t quite know that you’re also heroing out and about with a different team of heroes
he kinda doesn’t find out until you’re having to team up the Batfam and Avengers
you’re over talking with Natasha and Bruce gets the idea that you’re not all who you were making yourself out to be
you weren’t actually trying to hide anything at all
In fact, you knew that most of the family knew just cause you had teamed up with them
You just assumed that B knew
So Cass comes over to you and Nat cause like
Black Widow and my badass sibling are on a god level to me
Bruce is paying attention as he’s also bantering with Stark
“hey Cass.” You said, “Nat, this is my sister Cass.”
Nat nodded and smiled at her and Cass hugged her which she typically doesn’t do but like
omg
Bruce knows that it’s you then and there
Uh wtf
*protective dad mode* but then also like *dumbfounded proud dad moment*
He never really gets a chance to do much and talk to you since then you have to go on the mission
He’s really proud of you considering that you’re kinda like top tier player in the Avengers
He sees things that he taught you being implemented into your fighting style
A true bat at the core
He also sees how protective you are over your team especially the ones like Peter
He’s like another one of your siblings if you’re not dating or smt
Speaking of S/O’s, if you have one on the team, he’s doing research upon stalking  research on them
But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t trust your own instincts
When the mission is over read the dust has settled, he goes over and talks to you
You immediately give him a hug cause like DAD YOU FORGOT TO HUG ME DUMBASS
he’s apologetic but like, how was I supposed to know that it was you
“You’re the world's greatest detective, I figured you’d know like everyone else.”
oops
He tells you that he’s proud of you for joining something and making your name
He does tell you to glare at Stark extra for him though
cause like
technically they’re actually really good friends but he and Stark play it off as not really liking each other just for the media and they both think that it’s funny
You are also more and more open to team ups all around now
Outlaws, your family, Titans, League, Avengers always, X-men, anything
He’s also more and more inclined to being a greater part of your life even if he already was
After knowing that he really didn’t know that you were on a whole separate team, he wants to make sure that he doesn’t miss anything else in your life that’s important
This experience has made him a better father 100%

A fierce warrior must save the heart of her beloved prince before it's too late in the first book of a new YA fantasy-adventure graphic novel trilogy, perfect for fans of Noelle Stevenson's Nimona and Kazu Kibuishi's Amulet Evony is an orphaned princess from a kingdom destroyed by a power-hungry witch. Prince Ammon has recently been drawn to her, or at least he’s drawn to her uncanny ability to sense when familiars—servants to the witches—are approaching his kingdom’s borders. And Evony, well Evony has always longed for something more with Ammon. Wanting to prove himself to his kingdom and parents, Ammon takes Evony outside the borders to fight the familiars head-to-head. All is well until they’re captured by witch Aradia, who steals Ammon’s heart and leaves his body to turn into one of her familiars. What’s worse, his sister Nissa has been taken hostage by Aradia’s daughter. Evony makes it her mission to retrieve Ammon’s heart and save Nissa, taking her into the mysterious Witchlands. There, she will discover a secret about her past that will change everything.

LEIGH DRAGOON was raised in a log cabin in the Adirondacks, where she developed an early love of reading and writing. She became a fan of Little Women at age nine, after Beth’s demise made her bawl herself to sleep. This led to a lifelong appreciation of the book. After years of annual rereads, she became fascinated with learning about Louisa May and her family. She adapted both Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy and Marie Lu’s Legend series into graphic novel scripts. She has also written two prose Adventure Time novels: Queen of Rogues and The Lonesome Outlaw.

My 3.5-Star Review
Heartless Prince was a quick fairy tale read with beautiful art and a gorgeous color palette. The concept of the story reminded me a bit of the Heartless series by Sara Wolf, with witches who take humans’ hearts to bind them as familiars and gain power. In this case, a witch takes the heart of the kingdom’s prince, and the orphan girl his parents took in and raised (princess of a neighboring kingdom that was destroyed by a witch) goes on a mission to retrieve his heart and save his life. In the process, she discovers more about her own origins. I love that it is the princess-warrior who is saving the life of the prince in this one, as well as that his younger sister is a strong and brave girl in her own right. I will say, however, that I actually wish this was longer so that we had more of the backstory given to us. The beginning was a bit confusing, and I feel it could have benefited from more text; the story just felt abbreviated and left me wanting more. The art is really lovely, though, and the color palette is gorgeous; also, it was easy to follow changes in locations thanks to the color changes.
Overall, it was a fun, quick story, and while I wanted to know more, I did enjoy reading it. I would be interested in picking up the next two books in the trilogy to see where the story takes us!
Rating: 3.5 stars
