i miss the time true beauty was ongoing.
i remember it so vividly. by the time i started watching it the 6th ep was out & i only started it because i needed an escape. i wasn't a regular kdrama watcher back then. i was at a really bad place mentally and i needed something to keep me busy from overthinking, since i couldn't bring myself up to study or go out. so i decided to start watching it and it became my comfort drama. ive watched it 3 times in total, one back in january of 2021, one during the 2021-2022 school year when i needed comfort and i'm rewatching it now, during my last year of high school for comfort.
i just remember everything so vividly. i remember the fandom going crazy abt being team seojun or team suho, i remember slandering jukyung for choosing suho over seojun, i remember being head over heels for seojun and crying so hard not just because of the drama, but also because it was ending. i haven't cried this bad over anything. true beauty coming to an end was the most painful thing i have experienced and it was the first ever time i cried over a show/movie/drama.
i miss those days, i miss han seojun, i miss the time when the fandom was alive and i miss true beauty.

Hi! Nice to read you.
I've been in Tumblr for years, and this is the first time I send a message. I mostly use this app to read, and I'm usually just a ghost because I don't comment or anything else besides read, lol.
Well, the reason I felt like I needed to send you a message is because this channel of yours is new and I have read all your posts so far and I am absolutely intrigued to read more from you in the future because you already made me laugh a few times plus you have a psychology degree and although I don't have one because funny enough, I hated reading so much when I took psychology classes that I couldn't fathom getting that degree.
I do have a way with humans that is not common with the bast majority. I'm very intuitive and empathic as well, which makes my interactions with people deeper than I sometimes would like it to be. But that's a different story... I digress...
I found BTS this year because of K-Dramas. All of a sudden, I don't know how my Instagram went from KDramas to BTS. They are all over my explore feed, lol.
(Well it's not that difficult for IG to full my feed with them since once you like KDrama stuff, the whole South Korea country shows up in the algorithm lol, I just find it funny, sorry again I digress...)
The way I got to "meet" BTS was with the Run Episodes mini Reels in IG. Again, they are all over my feed. So eventually I found out they sing, and found a song I liked, searched it up, found out it was from them, got obsessed with the song, and now I have a few more that I like a lot so far.
I do not consider myself an Army, and I don't think I ever will. I do think BTS is absolutely talented and great performers and I may like more songs in the future if I go over all the albums because so far their songs find me in reels and that's how I have come to like the ones I do. But I do think the fandom is very toxic in my opinion, I'm not saying that all the people in there are, but overall from all the experience I have so far from them, that's the feeling I get as of now from most of the fandom. so I don't see myself connecting that far.
I like all the members. They each have something that I like about them, but what I have come to find out is that Jimin is out of this word. I don't know what that man has, but for God's sake, he can get people obsessed if they are not careful.
Do I consider myself a PJM? No.
However, the man can convert me at any minute to be honest, and I won't notice.
Well, my main reason to write to you is because although I've known about them in more detail the past few months, I'm really new to them. The past month, I got to know what shipping means, and like you, the first thing I saw on Instagram was the JK and TH one. I did not understand what was the romantic side of the videos I was being shown because I couldn't see anything beyond a great friendship. Then, I don't know how, but a video of JM and JK showed up. It was a compilation of them staring at each other and another one of JK walking to any direction JM was going to, and let me tell you...
I felt like I was spying on a couple that were in their private room and I just happened to be in the closet looking through a small hole because I got trapped there before they showed up and shut the door and I could get out. I FELT SO INTRUSIVE THAT IT MADE ME TURN MY HEAD SIDEWAYS MORE THAN ONCE, like I shouldn't be watching such a intimacy without consent. JESUS!!!
The feelings were deep. Let me tell you that much.
So, I, as a romantic person that loves LOVE and anything related to that, such as movies, and again K-Drama, well... I came to Tumblr to investigate this situation, hahahaha... and let's just say that in the past 2 weeks, I have consumed an insane amount of BTS shipping posts than what I would be proud to admit. It's very bad, I need a break. But I'm a binge watcher, and the content seems infinite (WOW), I'm the type of person that watches a K-dramma in one sitting because I can't do it anyway else.
Well, I have told you too much irrelevant sh*t sorry lol
My reason for the message was because I would like to read more posts of JM and JK from the perspective of people that that have follow them for a while and watch original content and express their thoughts on what they see and why they think of them as they do because of what they see.
I am interested in reading how people evaluate what they see without my personal thoughts about what I see as bias. I have been finding the posts I have read like that entertaining. But unfortunately the past weeks as well most of the things I see is people asking bogglers why they think JM and JK are still together and a constant fighting about recent things like video leaks, JK meeting too much with his friends but no with JM, this or that, and it's getting boring seeing these bloggers intelligence wasted on those questions.
My opinion is this: I won't assume they are a couple unless they say so (highly unlikely) or when definite proof gets leaked or posted by Dispatch or something like that. (Which I really hope it never happens, they don't deserve an outing like that if they are not ready) but I find it very concerning that these so called fans, and shippers just want proof that they are together so bad, that they don't care how that proof gets to them, which may hurt their so called bias. That's honestly SICK behavior! And then they wonder why people joke that BTS fandom is full of 12 years old. Again, I digress...
So, as I was saying, I won't assume they are a couple because I respect people, and I don't want to assume their sexuality or relationship. But I don't judge those who assume in a respectful way, I just personally don't want to cross that line.
In my personal opinion, they make me feel like they have feelings for each other and that they are aware of them. Have they crossed the sex line yet? Maybe.
The vibe I get is that they are aware of their feelings towards each other and might be scared to cross that line for the sake of their friendship or the group. Though, that doesn't stop them from being as physical as they show to be on screen.
They're like, "we know we have feelings for each other, we won't cross the sex line, but we will play with fire." And one thing is for sure in this life, intimacy goes beyond the sex act.
They are probably more intimate than what sex could make them be. I don't even know how to explain it in a coherent way to those who just see sex as the way of being fully intimate.
Also, I don't know why people have to assume that they are gay if they are proven to be with each other. I can never get disappointed enough of humans and their limited intelligence, like sometimes two people have a connection so strong that even if they have been only in a heterosexual relationship their whole lives, and there was this one instace where they were in a homosexual one, it automatically doesn't mean the person is part of the LGBTQ+ community, it's just means that there was a person, possibly what they would consider their "soul mate" that happen to be their same sex. But otherwise they have only been attracted to the opposite sex and will find themselves only attracted to the opposite sex if that person no longer exist in the picture, because they will never feel somethig like that again.
I've seen it, that's why I get mad when people don't see that, in this world there's so much that can be possible without putting a pre-existing LGBTQ+ label on it, that's why there's a + in it I guess. But AGAIN, I digress...
Now, even if JM and JK come out saying that they never have had anything going on, that they are with other people in a relationship or whatever else. I won't ever doubt that they had feelings for each other up to 2023. That much I am sure of, no matter the outcome of their relationship. These two had a mini encounter on a live a few days ago, and they both malfunctioned at one point lol they don't know how to control themselves.
But I just wanted to say that I hope you share more of your thoughts of what you see and saw on content where they are part of, like the youtube video you shared, (which I will watch once I have almost 3 hours to spare because once I start that, I won't stop until it's done lol) so I hope to read your opinions on those contents, your thought process as you watch those things. That would be entertaining for me as a new person viewing this shipping world, and those new like me that want to read stuff like that as entertainment or to learn more about them.
People here write as if all the readers are old in the BTS world or, more specifically, the Jikook world and not all of us are. I caught you doing some comments like that too so far, like "if you know you know," or like "you know what I am talking about," and I'm like... "But I don't know, I want to know but don't know lol" so I'm left clueless lol
Please, I hope that if you are here for a long run, remember that people like me will always exist and we may find your blog in our way to discovery and won't know sh*t lol. Also, I hope you tag more words so your posts are easier to find for people like me. Like when a post is about Jikook, you can also tag JM and JK tags since it is about them anyway. I was just following the Jimin tag, and now I will follow the Jikook one because some posts don't make it to the Jimin tag even tho the post includes him. But you may have your reasons, so it's totally fine if you don't.
Sorry for the long message. It's my first one ever, and I took it seriously, apparently lol.
I'm a millennial, I use lol a lot...
Att: The LOL Millennial
P.S. Any possible grammar/spelling mistakes are expected for my old age lol, thank you :)
God, I love a good, long message. Hi! Hope you don't mind me sharing your story and thoughts. It was a good read! I've also been a lurker until recently.
I'll try to respond in order.
"But I do think the fandom is very toxic in my opinion, I'm not saying that all the people in there are, but overall from all the experience I have so far from them, that's the feeling I get as of now from most of the fandom. so I don't see myself connecting that far."
It is absolutely okay to be a casual fan. It's healthier even. About the fandom, it's big enough to be a country, and as we know, a country holds many perspectives, personalities, religions, opinions, factions, moral/political alignments, criminals, and creeps, but also mostly just regular folk trying to make it through the day. That's how I see ARMY. It's simply too massive for everyone to get along. I think the toxicity has gotten much worse since the solo era started and the fandom is more divided than ever.
However, I believe that once BTS returns as a group, all of the garbage that's happened or been said this year will be forgotten. Solo projects have rotted the fandom's brains and yet were absolutely vital to the artistic growth of each member. It's a necessary evil, and BTS will be way, way stronger for it. We, the regular folk here, just keep our heads down and weather the storm. Amazing things are coming.
"But unfortunately the past weeks as well most of the things I see is people asking bogglers why they think JM and JK are still together and a constant fighting about recent things like video leaks, JK meeting too much with his friends but no with JM, this or that, and it's getting boring seeing these bloggers intelligence wasted on those questions."
We're getting a lot more fan interaction from the members during this hiatus than I thought we would. So it was surprising to me to see people whining about Jimin and Jungkook not posting about each other enough. Some people seem to think those two need to communicate solely via public social media otherwise they hate each other. Some people have entire narratives on how/when/why jikook broke up based on the stupidest shit you can imagine. As I said, solo era has been painful. My brain cells are dropping like flies.
"but I find it very concerning that these so called fans, and shippers just want proof that they are together so bad, that they don't care how that proof gets to them, which may hurt their so called bias."
Because to them Jungkook and Jimin are dolls to smash together while making kissy sounds. They just want to "win" their little ship war. As far as I'm concerned, there is no war because jikook is an actual possibility and the others are not. End of story. Any explicit "proof" getting out would be disastrous for them at this point in time.
"In my personal opinion, they make me feel like they have feelings for each other and that they are aware of them. Have they crossed the sex line yet? Maybe.
The vibe I get is that they are aware of their feelings towards each other and might be scared to cross that line for the sake of their friendship or the group. Though, that doesn't stop them from being as physical as they show to be on screen."
I think this was pretty much my opinion too until I started my deep dive and observing the timeline. The "state" of them of being aware of their feelings for each other but hesitant was late 2015/first half of 2016, in my personal timeline, it's one of the big shifts I saw. Their relationship has several developments after that too. So if they're currently in a romantic/sexual relationship, they have been for years. If they're not, then it's not likely to happen.
"in this world there's so much that can be possible without putting a pre-existing LGBTQ+ label on it"
Sexuality is a spectrum and people shouldn't have to define themselves if there is no label that quite fits. The more labels and distinctions we make, the more we box people in and become less inclusive. Jimin could be bi, Jungkook could be gay, but we don't know. We can't know. What I do know is that they really find each other really, really attractive.
"But I just wanted to say that I hope you share more of your thoughts of what you see and saw on content where they are part of, like the youtube video you shared"
Thank you for your support! That's the plan! It was painful to be so undetailed in the intro post.
"People here write as if all the readers are old in the BTS world or, more specifically, the Jikook world and not all of us are. I caught you doing some comments like that too so far, like "if you know you know," or like "you know what I am talking about," and I'm like... "But I don't know, I want to know but don't know lol" so I'm left clueless lol"
I know that's annoying, it was for me as well when I was starting my journey. But the "if you know you know" stuff I'm referring to is pics/info that leaked and we weren't supposed to see. More "evidence' I suppose. Nothing that would ruin their lives, obviously, but far far more telling than any dumbass clip/pic we've gotten for their other dating "rumors." Maybe you've already seen them. I'm not going to gatekeep these things, since they're out there anyway and you can find them, but you can reach out to me if you'd like and I can tell you in private.
"Also, I hope you tag more words so your posts are easier to find for people like me. Like when a post is about Jikook, you can also tag JM and JK tags since it is about them anyway."
The reason I didn't tag them individually is because solos, akgaes, and taekookers (jk tag) lurk in those tags and they're eye-twitchingly annoying. Especially right now.
Nonny, thank you so much for listening to my story and sharing yours. It was lovely to wake up to. I appreciate the interest a lot. I hope to hear from you in the future!

recommend me another depressing Korean gangster movie
>:D
Hmmm hmmm ok so if you say "another", that means you maybe already watched either "The Merciless" or "A Bittersweet Life" or perhaps both, which were the depressing Korean gangster movies I posted about most on here and both of which I very highly recommend...A Bittersweet Life is one of my favorite movies of all time, if not my top fave. In case you watched one but not the other:
A Bittersweet Life - a story about a man who catches one imperfect glimpse of beauty and throws away everything in a inevitable and helpless grasp at something he knows he can never have. I cried at the soundtrack for days after my first watch, haha.
The Merciless - a stylishly shot and perhaps more hardboiled noir about a chosen one who really meant it when he said he shouldn't be the chosen one, which falls apart in a spectacular and heartrending explosion of betrayal, confusion, and devastation. Like watching a trainwreck in slow motion.
These are most definitely my top 2 in the whole world so far, and honestly nothing else really plucks exactly those same chords with me in terms of overall excellence, but here's a few others nonetheless:
A Company Man - More of a straightforward shoot-em-up. Could be taken as either an action flick kinda sorta similar to Bittersweet Life (gangster wants out, gang won't let him go) or a harsh satire of South Korean work culture, which makes it (imho) slightly more interesting. Definitely depressing gangsters, for sure!
The Man from Nowhere - it's more of a vigilante justice/revenge thriller and a lot of people liked it, but unfortunately since it was one of the first in the genre (at least from South Korea), in my opinion it's since been done better. Or maybe I'm just chronically Kdrama-ing so I have more stringent standards, lol. The main lead's looks are to die for though if that's an aspect that appeals to you--and many folks loved it, 100% on Rotten Tomatoes!
The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil - On paper it looks amazing--a brash cop has to team up with a gangster to take down an even bigger criminal, exposing the corruption of the cops and the weird code of honor among the criminals. Usually that's my cup of tea and I came in SO ready to love this movie but...somehow didn't. I don't know why. It even had Ma Dong Seok, who's usually great! However, it got 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, so maybe you'll see something about it I missed if you watch it :)
Gangnam Blues - So, I didn't watch this one myself, but it's got Lee Min Ho and a historical-fiction take on the real-life corruption and money/power plays surrounding the creation of the glitzy Gangnam district from a marsh in the 70's, it looks interesting! I'll probably watch it in the future.
Speaking of, Ma Dong Seok is pretty much the go-to guy for Korean gangster movies. He's been in the genre since forever, if you search his name you'll likely find some good ones I haven't heard about.
I don't know if you're interested in extending your search to dramas, but in case you are:
Insider - one of THE best kdramas I've seen, hands down. The set-up is similar to The Merciless in that a guy goes undercover in prison to catch a gangster and ends up forming bonds with a high-ranking member while working on the inside. However, the similarities stop there. I think I binged it in like 3 days. It's gritty and doesn't let up, but the main guy is one of my favorite protagonists ever and the ending was fantastic
Big Mouth - it came out around the same time and also involves a wrongful imprisonment, but with a hilarious twist (along with some Very Not Hilarious ones) that make it a different flavor. I got busy and didn't finish (and also didn't have subtitles while it was airing)
Watcher - This one's more on the one-righteous-cop-vs-corrupt-conglomerate side of things, which will always and forever be my jam. The moody atmosphere and insanely tight writing make this one of my favorites. I've seen it like 4 or 5 times and seem to catch something new each time, the writing is extremely satisfying and there are great female characters too, which I'm all about.
Nobody Knows - I'm watching this one right now and it's also more on righteous detective vs killer side of things, but it's got a fascinating female lead, great characters, consistent plot and great storytelling so far.
Triangle - this one is about gangsters and casinos and is unique because it's one of the WORST kdramas I've EVER seen, but it's so bad it crosses the line right back into good again because it's so freaking funny how everyone manages to act the worst plot and the worst characters with the deepest sincerity. Everyone's gorgeous, which helps. It's funnier if you're a chronic Kdrama enjoyer to see all the worst tropes played out in the funniest ways with dead straight faces. They actually wrote it episode by episode based on viewer feedback and ran out of time at the end because the feedback was conflicting--and BOY does it show in unintentionally hilarious ways.
Bad and Crazy - I LOVE this drama, especially the first act. It's violent and dark, with comedy thrown in, and one of the most interesting and sensitive portrayals of a mental illness on screen that I've ever seen in both American and Korean TV. Yet another righteous-cop-vs-conglomerate plot, my beloved. I'll eat that storyline up each time though.
So that's movies and dramas off the top of my head--if I think of any other good ones, I'll let you know! Happy watching and omg, if any of those tickle your fancy I'd love to hear your thoughts! :D
*Ok, one runner up: From the director of "A Bittersweet Life", "A Tale of Two Sisters" is a psychological horror that is just. so. good. I'm not usually a horror person and I was hooked and think about it all the time, very excellent!

👣. !!: HOSEONG WITH K-ACTORS ‧₊˚
↺ 💌 ࣪ ˖ ∿ author’s note , @ here guys pls have this in the mean time whilst you wait for the other post. my mind is seriously blanking for tae & jk rn i’m sorry 😞
Tumblr media
⊂ HOSEONG ✶ SONG KANG ⊃
Tumblr media
KANG WAS on hoseong’s radar because he was an avid watcher of kdramas in his free time. the bts member had made a passing comment in one of his vlives at some point talking about how kang seemed to be in many of the dramas he’s watched recently, as well as complimenting his acting skills.
OF COURSE, kang was very aware of who park hoseong was, and he was flattered by the male’s comments, taking to his instagram to thank hoseong humbly. that’s how they slowly began their friendship, with hoseong commenting under the post and soon liking many of kang’s following posts as the older did the same.
⊂ HOSEONG ✶ LEE DOHYUN ⊃
Tumblr media
HOSEONG knew dohyun way before he ever debuted as an actor in 2O17. due to his move to seoul at an early age, hoseong met dohyun towards the beginning years after his debut under bts, having run into him at one point when he was in a hurry, but since that day, they would come to run into each other even more.
THEY WERE basically like “what the hell?” right? because what are the chances? so one day dohyun just decided to invite hoseong out on a coffee where they properly got to know one another and became close friends ever since. dohyun is probably hoseong’s closest friend after his members.
⊂ HOSEONG ✶ KIM SOO HYUN ⊃
Tumblr media
HOSEONG met soo-hyun on the set of ‘it’s okay to not be okay’ where he had his second acting role after debuting with taehyung on hwarang. he was pretty comfortable and extroverted around strangers so it wasn’t very difficult for him to introduce himself to his co-workers, telling soo-hyun how much of a fan he was.
THEY GOT to know one another more during a work dinner after soo-hyun said he wanted to celebrate hoseong’s first appearance in the drama. they became friends rather quickly ever since that day, with hoseong even posting a picture of himself with soo-hyun looking rather tipsy and captioning it calling soo-hyun his hyung.
⊂ HOSEONG ✶ KWAK DONG YEON ⊃
Tumblr media
HOSEONG met dong yeon on the set of ‘vincenzo’ when he was making a special appearance for the show through a cameo. hoseong actually watched ‘vincenzo’ actively, and kept up with the latest episodes. he found dong yeon’s character sweet and had even met the actor prior on the set of ‘it’s okay to not be okay’.
THEY ONLY reached friends status when bumping into each other at a gym one day, a place that dong yeon regularly began visiting meaning the duo had time to talk. they would spot for each other and exchanged numbers after some time, leading to many outings of the duo in seoul.
⊂ HOSEONG ✶ HONOURABLE MENTIONS ⊃

One Take
Plot : 8/10
The yandere : 8/10
Artwork : 8/10
Author : Applepie/Kim Cookie
Artist: Chalbap
This is a decent read overall, packed with lots of angst and tension but unfortunately running out of steam in the end, when the main characters suddenly became too philosophical, said wordy dialogue, and tried to justify questionable decision(s).
Ah, it sounds like I did not like this one, when in fact, I like it a lot. I just tend to be more critical to the more decent read. But do not let my bad habit deter you. Completed at around 50 chapters, this manhwa sure is an entertaining read in a non-intimidating-chewable-size.
Tumblr media
The showbiz-acting setting is believable and quite fascinating. There are some acting metaphors integrated to the character’s musing. The dialogue are often crisp and witty (except when it is not). The tension between two main leads are so delicious, I was hoping to get more of their scenes. Ngl, it has one of the most sexy first-bi-curious-kiss I have ever read in manhwa.
The main character is a pariah in the acting world due to false allegations in his past. This story took place when he started to climb back up by taking a role in a drama series. He is likeable, if not a bit too martyrs for my taste. The male lead though, he is quite intriguing, it is a shame that we did not get more of his pov.
Tumblr media
The yandere-ness is pretty strong in this one, but not too hardcore. There is confinement, years of stalking, manipulation and obsession from the yandere man. If you are an avid Kdrama watcher like me, you probably notice that the premise of this manhwa is like the Kdrama “The Greatest Love”. It is straight MxF though, but if you enjoy this premise with more satisfying pining and conclusion, perhaps you can move on to the Kdrama. Now that I mentioned it, Dokko Jin, the male lead from the drama is also a yandere. He stalked and pined the female lead relentlessly, went to her house and rummaged through her underwear (lol). It was portrayed as humorous but definitely a yandere behavior.
Tumblr media
Anyway, back to the manhwa, the art, as you can see is really pretty. Too bad it was not a smut. I really like the character designs, especially the main characters. I hope the artist would draw more manhwa in the future and (salute to the yandere god) obsessive love story at that.

English Language as a Narrative Trope in BL
Tumblr media
Just a quick note to say that in many Asian dramas (not just BL) a character speaking English is an intentional characterization trait.
In some cases it indicates a level of modernity and a kind of “punk ass” attitude (see a lot of early Kdramas, and Perth’s character in Cutie Pie).
Tumblr media
In others it indicates allegiances to a non-standard individualistic mentality or propensity to selfishness and evil (see this EXCELLENT post on English being weaponized in KinnPorsche).
Tumblr media
In some cases it has to do with a character’s demonstration of class and education (AKA wealth and acquired intelligence). Also being world traveled etc.. You see this applied to the wealthy CEO archetype a lot (also often depicted eating western food).
In others, the actor already speaks English and the show runners just want to show this off. (Everything is not always narratively intentional in the film industry, sorry.)
Sometimes they just fucking with us.
For chronic BL watchers, English in use in Taiwanese BL and Pinoy BL is materially different than the above, and much less innately suspicious (and applied with much less narrative/character intent). This should be obvious given both countries’ histories and relationships with English.
Finally, Japan rarely if ever uses English in this way (if at all).
As I run across good examples of all of this, I’ll try to remember to update this post.
Note: English words and terms borrowed into a language and then applied organically as part of a sentence are different, especially in the queer communities. For example, Korean dramas often use the English word kiss specially to mean romantic lip-to-lip (see Semantic Error), and the word gay is very loaded in many BLs. Discussion of that here.

puttha-sumettikul asked:
In Ghost Host Ghost House, Kawin asks Pluem to use "I" and "you" and they have the most adorable little negotiation/settling in conversation around it. It made me so happy and I don't know why. What are your thoughts on BL utilising English particles like this? Has it been done before? What kind of weight does it hold for the characters and their relationship?
Characters talking in English always has some kind of significance in a BL. Although Kewin having lived in the United States does make a difference in this particular instance.
Use of English always tends to indicate a certain amount of modernity and youthful connection. Because it often requires higher education, speaking English can have class and money implications. I think that Cake’s use of English in the sex scene in My Only 12% is saying something along these lines.
Tumblr media
Also the way that this show makes a point of highlighting Cake’s American friends being supportive about his relationship when Cake comes out on Facebook.
In BL from Korea it can imply characterization: a more punk-ass, overly independant and aggressive nature.
In a place like Taiwan however, everyone under a certain age is expected to have some grasp of English, so it's more simply established unless it’s used A LOT. The bartender’s use of English all the time in My Tooth Your Love clearly is somewhat more significant than normal for Taiwan.
Tumblr media
With Kawin asks Pluem in Ghost Host, Ghost House I think part of the implication is that Kawin would like them to be more queer or gay in the global understanding of such terms than they are as a couple under the tie restrictions of Thailand’s formality of language. (He’s also younger so he wants to age up as equals in the relationship.)
The switch to and use of American pronouns instead of Thai ones, carries a ton of weight in terms of an implied equal footing within the relationship and moving away from age restrictions and age dynamics.
This, in turn, allows Kawin more freedom and agency in terms of their sex scenes. As the implied uke this narrative, he should be more blushing maiden and les proactive and interested in sex. But this narrative just allows him to be himself about the whole situation, and I think in part this negotiation was to give him a certain level of intimacy and autonomy as an agent in his own sexual destiny.
Their using English pronouns to bypass a socially establish pattern of behavior that has been imposed by the pre-existing history of the culture around those pronouns. As such it says A LOT about how these two see each other and their relationship (as equals, but also as modern representative of gayness).

Tumblr media
You liked to think that you could adjust to any kind of situation rather quickly and turn even the most unfortunate ones into something fun to remember. Like when you and your best friend had visited that new coffee shop on campus and the baristas had managed to mess up almost your entire order. They had prepared hot choco for Miyeon instead of her iced one, served the wrong slice of cake for you (though, that at least had tasted just fine) and called something suspicious, that had tasted like strawberry juice mixed with yoghurt, a shake. Or when you had forgotten to get off the train on your way to your father and ended up on a station in the middle of nowhere where you had been able to try the most delicious shrimp sandwich ever. Or when you had forgotten your keys on the bus, but had managed to get them back along with a nice dude’s number.
You believed that in most situations, what mattered was whether you gave into your sadness or decided to pay attention to the options you still had. A few minor catastrophes weren’t the end of the world. Not even when one got lost in a foreign city.
And certainly not when the electricity went out in one’s tiny studio flat from one moment to the other.
Truth to be told, you didn’t notice the current incident until the episode you were watching stopped in the middle of the most heated fight you had ever seen in kdrama history, but when you did, you almost smashed your forehead against your keyboard in despair. Almost. But then you remembered that things would have gotten a lot worse if you had managed to break your laptop over something you couldn’t help, and took a deeper breath. It wasn’t super late yet. You surely could find a solution for your unfortunate situation in case the wifi didn’t come back in half an hour.
It took you a couple of minutes to realise that the problem was bigger than you had initially thought, but your humble home was too small for a normal refrigerator, so your food was at least safe in your battery powered, mini fridge; and your AC had broken last week anyway. Not sure where to look for the fuse box and whether you were the only one affected by the sudden power outage, you put on your shoes and checked whether the automatic lights were still working on the corridor, then called your landlord to seek his help, but the old man didn’t pick up the phone.
Wary of the idea of staying in a small, dark room for God knew how long - even if it was your temporary home -, you eventually grabbed your laptop and its charger, shoved them both in your bag and left the building with one goal in mind: to find a public wifi somewhere nice and comfortable that wasn’t too far from your studio flat. You wanted to stay close in case your landlord called you back, but you also needed some sort of distraction for the time being and you knew you could always count on your favourite kdramas when you needed to keep your mind off something.
You could have visited the university library since that option would have been completely free with your student ID card, but it was the second week of summer break and the sole thought of spending some time on SNU ground killed your vibe. You were a second year law student, you might have needed to study during school breaks, too, but you wanted to have at least one more week for yourself before you started to revise. So the library was a big no-no.
You were about to head towards the nearest Burger King where you knew you could blend in the crowd, when your eyes landed on the aesthetic coffee shop you had passed by every day on your way to your classes the last two semesters. You had only entered once, because of a mouth-watering seasonal offer around Halloween, but you remembered their employees to be nice and the overall atmosphere to be welcoming.
Hence, you decided to give them another try and walked inside Coffee Carat with an excited heart. You were dying to know whether the main couple in the show you had been watching would break up because of the fight or would end up in a more heated situation… elsewhere. Nowadays, kdramas weren’t afraid to portray sensual tension in its rawest forms, so you couldn’t have known until you watched it. Which you planned to do in the empty corner close to the coffee bean sticker on the wall, right after you bought the cheapest item on the menu to not waste too much money on your sudden adventure. You were a jobless university student, after all.
The girl behind the counter, Sooryeon, prepared a small sized iced americano for you - the other option was a cup of black coffee, but that didn’t have enough water in it for your liking  - that you carried to the empty table you had previously had your eyes on. There, you made yourself comfortable with your knees pulled all the way up to your chest and turned on your laptop. Since you had been smart enough to have your headphones with you and they had the wifi passcode (17Carat) written on every menu card, things from there went pretty smoothly. You got back to your episode rather quickly.
However, the argument between the star-crossed lovers turned out to be nothing like you had imagined. It was worse, that made you question whether watching it did you good or bad. Maybe, the electricity problem had been a sign that this series wasn’t for you, because oh boi! When the lead dude dared to call the girl easy for spending “too much” time with her male best friend, your blood pressure went up. If you had been in the girl’s shoes, you would have walked out on the toxic guy without thinking twice, but obviously this wasn’t what happened on screen. Instead, she apologised. The hell! It was unacceptable.
You reached out for your drink hoping that a few sips of iced americano could bring you back to the real world before you could have gotten too worked up over a fictional situation, but the longer you kept your eyes on the screen, the angrier you got. Why would anyone have promised to avoid their best friend for a possessive piece of shit? It made no sense, not to you who valued every human relation a bit differently, but just as passionately. Sure, your family always came first in emergencies, but would you have turned down a friend for your mom, dad or step-siblings when they needed you? Absolutely not. Because every person in your life was important to you in their own, unique way. And they knew better than to try and change your mind.
As annoyed as the exaggerated, sloppy nose kisses between the main couple made you feel, as thrilled you became when the best friend bumped into his own love interest three scenes later. Too bad, their first meeting in the night club was the cliffhanger the creators had chosen for the end of the current episode. Because knowing no self-control, you had to start the next one on the spot.
And the next one, too, when it ended with the revelation that the best friend’s girl knew the main lead dude from her childhood. Of course, she knew him. It was a freaking kdrama where everyone was connected to everyone in one way or another. At this point, you wouldn’t have been surprised even if he had been the one who had driven her away from her hometown. His possessive traits made him quite suspicious if you wanted to be honest.
‘Oh? The audacity this man has! He absolutely deserves that slap,’ you heard someone say because of the tense silence between the male lead and the second female lead. You furrowed your brows and turned towards the intruder, visibly confused by his comment.
‘What?’ You asked, barely registering his apron before he pointed at your laptop impatiently. You had no idea what was going on. Until you heard a belittling scoff in your ears followed by an upset gasp.
By the time you turned back ahead, the toxic dude’s fancy dress shirt was soaked with coffee and the girl was nowhere to be found.
You paused the video and took off your headphones so that you could talk to your intruder without missing another crucial scene. (Not that you couldn’t have rewatched them once he was gone.)
‘Can I help you with something?’ You asked as politely as you could just in case they had a policy to not let people hang out at their shop for hours without spending a certain amount of money or something. Some places near campus did this because of the growing number of students who used those diners and coffee shops between classes to kill some time, making it impossible for real, paying customers to find empty tables.
‘Oh? Yeah, I came to tell you that we’re closing in twenty minutes,’ the blonde boy informed you with an apologetic smile, a bit bashful under your intense gaze. But you could understand the latter. You weren’t as subtle while you were checking him out as you would have liked to think. Not that it was your fault. He had half a dozen cups on his tray and his muscles were desperate to make an appearance under his long sleeved shirt.
Taking a swallow breath, you got your head out of the gutter before things could have taken a more awkward turn and focused on what he had said before. So they were about to close the coffee shop soon. That wasn’t good news at all.
‘So soon?’ You asked, chewing on your inner cheeks while you were contemplating. Should you have called it a day or found another place where you could have stayed? Logically speaking, you wouldn’t be able to finish the whole drama in one night anyway, so maybe you should have gone home and gotten in bed a little earlier for once. That way, you could have done the groceries in the morning before the weather got too hot.
‘I mean, it’s almost ten,’ the boy said, surprising you with this new piece of information.
‘Shit! I didn’t even…’
You hadn’t even realised how late it had gotten, let alone that you had completely forgotten about dinner. But now that you were reminded of your instant chicken ramen, you could feel your hunger slowly taking control over your body. You would need to stop by a 7-Eleven on your way home to fill your tummy. Just in case the electricity was still out.
‘It’s okay. I think this episode is almost over,’ he said with a nonchalant shrug and a smile that reached his eyes. In spite of his reason for walking up to you, he didn’t seem dead set on sending you away which made you reciprocate his smile. You could vibe with the easy-going aura he radiated.
A bit dazed, you had no idea you were staring until the boy tilted his head and pointed at your laptop.
‘Won’t you finish it?’ He inquired with clear amusement in his voice. The light shaking of his shoulders made it obvious that he was trying hard not to laugh, but you didn’t mind being the cause of his good mood. In fact, it made you feel proud of yourself.
With a firm nod, you turned back to your laptop and hit space to start the video. He was right, there were only fourteen or so minutes left from the current episode, so you could finish it just in time if no one disturbed your peace in the meantime.
At first, you were so immersed in the happenings that you didn’t notice when the boy walked back to you. But then you heard the unmistaken sound of a chair being pulled out and you couldn’t not pay attention to the blonde boy on your right. He sat next to you and didn’t give a damn about not hearing the characters’ voices because of your headphones.
You looked around in the coffee shop to check how many customers were still there and detached your headphones from your laptop when you saw that only two other tables were occupied.
‘Thanks,’ the boy mumbled before he placed his elbows on the table and leaned forwards to hear the dialogues better.
It didn’t take too long and the next thing you knew, you were discussing the ridiculous twists of the episode with the blondie so passionately as though you were the closest friends of all time. You criticised the poorly written female lead and her incapability to stand up for herself while he called the best friend out on his bullshit when he turned his back on said girl even though she was clearly stuck in a toxic relationship. It was nice, knowing that you saw these things similarly. Because if he had sided with the meal lead, you would have torn your hair out.
‘I’m Boo Seungkwan, by the way. Barista of the month,’ the boy introduced himself once the episode came to an end, stretching his limbs in his seat. He seemed a little tired from this new angle, but the bags under your eyes had been your constant accessories since high school, too, so you couldn’t have been sure about him.
You turned towards him with your full body.
‘Like seubkwan? Because I could make a habit of you,’ you joked, emphasising your words with a playful wink for good measure. It wasn’t that you were a flirt around every gorgeous man, but his name was pretty cool and your brain had made the connection before your filters could have saved the both of you from a potential second-hand embarrassment.
‘Jeez, this was the lamest pick-up line I’ve ever heard and I’ve already heard Joshua flirting,’ the boy complained with a wholehearted laugh, his eyes turning into pretty crescents as he gave into the feeling. You took it as a good sign.
You were about to ask for Seungkwan’s kkt ID when a grumpy guy stopped at your table and reminded the boy that he had been supposed to send you away half an hour ago. Therefore, you decided to not waste the baristas’ time any longer and opted for coming by another time. You were positive that he would remember you, so you weren’t worried.
‘I’m sorry. He told me about the closing time, I was just too immersed in my own… stuff,’ you tried to lessen the other barista’s anger, although you weren’t sure it was working. He didn’t look less pissed when he shook his head and turned his back on you.
‘You shouldn’t have to. But thanks,’ Seungkwan said while you carefully put your laptop in your backpack and finished the last sips of your melted iced americano. Its watery yet bitter aftertaste made you frown and lingered in your mouth when you shrugged.
‘Yeah, whatever. No big deal,’ you reassured him, then carried your glass to the counter and left the coffee shop with a content smile on your face.
Tumblr media
Since it was summer break, you didn’t have assignments to write and tests to study for, but you had already known a handful of your professors and many of them liked testing their students’ knowledge during the first week of the new semester. You couldn’t have allowed yourself to slack off.
Still, you made sure to spend some of your free time in Coffee Carat two or three times a week, because you had had fun with Seungkwan when you had been watching that ridiculous kdrama together and he was totally your type. It wouldn’t have hurt anyone if you had gotten to know him a little better (until you weren’t pushy).
Which you obviously weren’t. In fact! You didn’t approach him at all without having at least one good excuse up your sleeves like when you had asked for his number because of future drama and movie recommendations. You made sure to not come off too strong when he was working, but also made it your mission to greet him with a bright smile and a new, original pick-up line whenever he had a moment to rest. He seemed to like your enthusiasm.
‘That book looks heavy,’ Seungkwan pointed out when he came by with your refill and a few freshly made Unstoppaballs. While you still didn’t intend to throw all of your allowance out the window for overpriced snacks and drinks, ever since you had tried their white chocolate croissant, you couldn’t help but want to taste as many of their desserts as possible. They were heavenly. All of them so far.
‘Don’t even get me started. It was a stupid idea to come here instead of the library,’ you said with a frown while you took a ball into your hand and threw it into your mouth. Hm, it didn’t disappoint you, either. ‘I wanted to try a change of scenery.’
It was true. July was slowly coming to an end and you were sick and tired of studying at the uni library every second afternoon. You were bored of those four walls you called your home, too. You had to find a new place with functioning AC where you could concentrate.
‘Nah, I’m friends with Kim Mingyu. This idea is nowhere near stupid,’ Seungkwan reassured you with a nonchalant wave of his hand, the gesture making you smile simply because of the serious look on his face. You had already had the pleasure to meet said Kim Mingyu - he was the clumsy but warm-hearted giant who baked all these delicious goods in the kitchen behind the counter -, so you knew Seungkwan was exaggerating, but their bickering reminded you of your oldest step-sister and that never failed to lift up your mood.
It didn’t mean you suddenly felt more motivated to open your criminal law textbook, but you weren’t super depressed, either. You still had a month to go before the next semester started. You weren’t behind any serious schedule.
‘Did you watch the new episode of Why her?’ You asked with a playful smile in the corner of your mouth. It was more like a teasing than a serious question. You just wanted to divert the topic from your studies.
And by the pseudo-offended look on Seungkwan’s face, he was aware of this, too.
‘Of course, not. Did you?’ He threw the question right back at you with one of his eyebrows raised. He narrowed his eyes to look intimidating, but the only reaction he managed to coax out of you was an amused giggle. To you, he looked more adorable than anything. Especially when he put his hands on his hips.
You shook your head, giving him your answer.
Seungkwan’s hands fell back by his sides before he lifted his right one back up and clicked his fingers. He looked satisfied and since this feeling bloomed in his chest because of you, your lips curled upwards at the sight.
‘Pretty and loyal. Totally my style,’ he teased you, the words rolling off his tongue innocently albeit playfully. The two of you might have started talking only three weeks ago, but your dynamic had already felt natural. Seungkwan and you fitted like puzzle pieces and while it was true that many of the pieces had the same shape in the game, you were also convinced that your colours were just as compatible so far.
‘If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it,’ you started singing off key while you lifted your hand in front of your chest and wiggled your fingers for the same rhythm.
Seungkwan’s laugh filled your senses and you saw nothing, heard nothing else but him while he calmed himself down with that dramatic breathing exercise he had learned from Kwon Soonyoung - a very loud and very extra dude you had also had the pleasure to meet last week when he had come into the shop and stood in as the place’s manager because the boss had been sick or something.
‘Sure, sure, Beyonce sunbaenim. I finish at two,’ Seungkwan said with a hint of a smile still present in the corner of his mouth. You stole a glance at the analog watch on your wrist, then reached for your drink and took a tentative sip from the ice cold beverage.
‘I’ll be here,’ you promised before you shot him a smile and turned back to your book. A part of you felt that it was a mission impossible to memorise all those articles you had planned to restudy that day, but you had almost two entire hours to try, therefore you did just that.
You stayed at Coffee Carat, occasionally sipping on your drink and munching on your orange and white chocolate flavoured dessert, until Seungkwan got off the clock. Then, the two of you played rock-paper-scissors and decided to have some non-spicy tteokbokki at the pocha on the other side of the park.
It was another nice afternoon spent drinking and gossiping when your skills saved you from paying for both of your food. (And the karaoke afterwards.)
Tumblr media
When Seungkwan told you that he was best friends with the insta dude you stole most of your memes from, you did what everyone else would have done in your shoes: called him a liar.
But then, when instead of whining and trying to convince you like he usually did, he asked you to come down to the coffee shop as soon as you could, your jaw almost hit the floor at the sight of THE Hansol Vernon Chwe. You wished Seungkwan had warned you in advance - though, you most probably wouldn’t have believed him anyway - so that you could have put on a quirkier tee. You were dressed painfully unoriginal. A plain, white tee and denim jeans? You could have done so much better!
‘What? Has the cat got your tongue?’ The blonde boy asked from across the customer area when he noticed you from the corner of his eye. Which hadn’t been an overly difficult task as you were standing frozen a couple of steps from the entrance, being in the way.
You shook your head and collected yourself quickly. So what if you looked like every second person in front of your role model? Your personality was still top tier. Therefore, you put on a smile and walked up to the boys as though nothing had happened.
‘I like your glasses. Does your lemonade disappear when you put it on?’ You pointed at the red pair of glasses atop of Vernon’s head before you shifted your finger to the strawberry flavoured drink in front of him.
‘Yeah! Believe it or not, that’s why I took them off actually,’ he said with eyes big and bright, making you smile with the sudden enthusiasm he formed every word with. Vernon seemed to be unreasonably hyped due to the most trivial thing one could have started a conversation with, but you didn’t mind it one bit. In fact, you loved it a lot.
‘If you keep smiling at him like that, Rina noona will avoid the poor guy for another week. Stop! You’re embarrassing,’ Seungkwan groaned, pushing his plate in front of you. ‘Eat this!’
You scoffed, but took his fork in your hand and cut a small piece off his pink brownie.
‘You say it as if it’s either the brownie or your friend,’ you stated, your right eyebrow sliding a tad bit upwards while you were staring at the blonde boy. Of course, you didn’t really think he had meant to imply any of this, but it was rare that your filters worked in your friends’ company, so you couldn’t not push his buttons.
Sure, you thought Vernon was freaking hilarious and fairly handsome even in real life. You would have also liked to impress him with your huge collection of funny hoodies and other pieces of clothings, but by no means did you plan to jump on him. Mostly, because you were two strangers at a public coffee shop. More importantly, because you already had your mind set on someone else.
‘Oh? So it’s not why you’re drooling?’ He shot back, earning an unamused eye roll from you as you shoved a piece of his dessert into your mouth. He was lucky that he had fed you before he had said something like this. Otherwise, you would have shown him how much you didn’t appreciate unnecessary jealousy whether he acted on his real feelings or was exaggerating.
‘Very funny.’
It was a lame retort, you were aware of it. But no matter how many jokes there were up your sleeve - you could have told him you had been dreaming about him before he had texted you -, you wished to put an end to this topic as soon as possible, and this was the fastest way to do so. You also wanted Seungkwan to learn on his own where your limits lied so that he could have remembered better in the future.
Despite your initial banter, you had a good time with the boys. The three of you challenged each other who could stuff more mango and dark chocolate flavoured balls into their mouth, talked about your unhealthy obsession with reaction pictures (and showed Vernon those you had made of candid photos you had taken of Seungkwan). Sadly, the blonde barista needed to start his afternoon shift not long after, but he still managed to bring up Vernon’s girl somehow before he left the two of you alone, which led you and your new friend to a semi-awkward conversation about how he wasn’t together with Rina for real. You weren’t sure you believed him, but it wasn’t that he had any reason to lie to you.
Tumblr media
By August, spending his lunch break with Seungkwan at the coffee shop had become one of your favourite activities. These meetings always had a limited time period, a pretty short one on top of that, but exactly because of this, they didn’t have a negative effect on your studies. You could anticipate them, but they didn’t distract you too much. They allowed you to spend some quality time with the boy almost every day, but they didn’t take up all your time. When it was time to say goodbye, you had no other choice, which meant that you couldn’t make up excuses in your head why you could have stayed just a bit longer. They were perfect for you since you always had something to do, but liked to procrastinate.
Because of the scorchingly hot weather, the owner of Coffee Carat had put new dessert items on their menu, so you were munching on their I Scream Bowl when Seungkwan ran towards you from behind that curtain that hid the employees only area. Although you noticed him and his dramatic ass before he reached you, you didn’t have enough time to swallow down that huge piece of ice cream-coated sponge cake you were about to shove into your mouth. And you definitely couldn’t react properly when he pulled you up from your chair and turned you into his human-sized shield.
‘Ya! Boo Seungkwan, what the hell?’ You asked when your spoon fell on the floor along with a tiny part of your food. You couldn’t help but pout when you saw the remains of your poor vanilla scoop next to the abandoned cutlery.
‘Please, whatever happens… Do. Not. Move,’ he pleaded, his voice making you worried and a little upset at the same time. You didn’t like being left in the dark, but you were still too disoriented and confused to demand an explanation.
With a displeased frown, you turned your head towards the barista, but one look at his wide eyes was enough to know that your answer was in front of you. Thus, you acknowledged his clinginess with a resigned sigh and turned back ahead. To say that you had never seen anyone as furious as Mingyu looked at that moment would have been an understatement. He seemed to be freaking done with your blonde friend.
‘He’s out for your blood,’ you whispered after a nervous gulp, unsure whether it was wise to stay between these two in case Mingyu was serious about beating Seungkwan up despite the audience. What happened in those two minutes while Seungkwan had been away because he had wanted to get his power bank from his locker? You should have just offered him to use yours.
‘It was an accident,’ he whined, holding onto you firmer. You winced when his fingertips dug into your shoulder, but didn’t make the smallest effort to move away from him.
‘Have you apologised?’ You asked instead with your gaze on the usually kind-hearted giant who was slowly walking towards your duo. The café’s baker was easily two heads taller than you, but you couldn’t let his height intimidate you. Thus, you chose to concentrate on the red stain on his white tee and… oh. ‘What did you do?’
If Seungkwan had intended to fill you in on the details, he had run out of time, because the next thing you knew was that Mingyu’s steps came to a halt in front of you and your nose almost bumped into his chest. Since when had bakers been so fit? And when did he have time to hit up the gym anyway?
You shook your head. It wasn’t important.
‘I see, my lunch wasn’t your only victim,’ the baker concluded with a scoff as he sat on his heels and picked up your spoon. He then took a yellow cloth out of his pocket and wiped the melted ice cream off the floor as well.
‘Thanks,’ you said with a grateful smile that he acknowledged with a curt nod. It was as clear as day that despite his anger, he didn’t mean to hurt anyone, thus you pinched Seungkwan’s side to make him speak. He clearly owed Mingyu an apology.
‘I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t see you.’ The barista’s words confused you even more as Mingyu was anything but hard to notice, but you obviously weren’t familiar with the circumstances or any further detail, so you held back your doubtful snort. Moreso, when the baker put his hands on his hips and shook his head with a small albeit genuine smile. You definitely needed to ask Seungkwan what had happened once you two got back to your lunch.
‘Fine. But you should go and buy a new sandwich for me. And some sweets for her,’ Mingyu said with big hand gestures, almost punching you in the shoulder due to his enthusiasm. From one moment to another, he turned into such a puppy, you found it hard to put your finger on what could have scared the blonde boy so much.
‘Duh. I was about to do that anyway,’ Seungkwan said with his hands still on your upper and lower arm. He was so close, you could not only hear his frustration, but feel it, too. It was in the way his fingers dug more into your flesh and how his warm breath fanned over your neck due to the sudden intensity he formed his response with.
You were about to reassure him that he didn’t have to spend his money on you since you had already been halfway through your I Scream Bowl - and that was your dessert, anyway, not your actual lunch -, and that there was still some of the cinnamon sponge cake in your bowl that you could have eaten, but before you could have protested, Seungkwan pulled away from you and rushed up to Jun who was currently behind the counter. Lips slightly parted, you stared at his visibly impatient figure as if he was an unknown species, then fished out your phone and took a picture of his current posture (his left hand was on his hip with his wallet in it, his right one on the counter; meanwhile one of his legs was bent, foot drumming a hurried rhythm) so that you could turn it into a meme.
Later, when the blonde boy came back to you with an apricot croissant and sent Mingyu back to the changing room with a chicken-mayo-avocado sandwich, Seungkwan told you that he had accidentally knocked the baker’s lunch out of his hand after he had closed his locker. He swore up and down that he would have apologised right away if only Mingyu hadn’t stood up from the bench so angrily. According to his detailed description, the giant looked like he had been about to step on him and he had acted on his survival instincts.
‘Don’t be too surprised if your escape goes viral, though. I’m sure, a lot of customers were staring when Mingyu came up to us,’ you warned him with an amused chuckle, appreciating the fluffy texture of the croissant Seungkwan had bought you.
‘I mean… until Seungcheol hyung doesn’t see it…’ he said between two bites, sounding a little uncertain. However, his demeanour soon changed after he swallowed the food that was in his mouth. ‘Nevermind. I have no regrets.’
And he really hadn’t. Not even during his next closing time, when Seungcheol scolded him (and Mingyu) in front of his coworkers, you, and a guy named Chan for acting so carelessly and making a scene in the middle of the customer area at peak time.
Tumblr media
At the end of the first week of the new semester, you were in desperate need of some sugar and entertainment, so it was no question that you visited Seungkwan at the coffee shop after your last seminar. Especially because it ended around eight which meant you didn’t have to wait too long for him to have some spare time for you between two customers. Coffee Carat might have been popular, but most people spent their Friday nights in clubs and bars where they could have blown off some steam. Thus, the atmosphere was always rather peaceful two hours before closing time.
Taking a seat by the same table you usually sat with Seungkwan and the guys, you hadn’t expected to see a sad Vernon moping over his iced coffee, but you tried your best to act like any considerate friend would have done. You took a nonchalant sip from your cinnamon latte and greeted him with a friendly smile as though you hadn’t caught him red-handed, pouting while staring at his cheese cake.
‘Is it bad? I haven’t tried that one yet,’ you pointed at the abandoned dessert in front of him in hope of striking up a conversation, but he didn’t show any sign that he had heard you. Shoot. Should you have sat somewhere else? Nah, that would have been rude since you had noticed him as soon as you had walked inside the shop.
Uncharacteristically helpless, you looked around in the customer area to find those clues that could have helped you figure out what could have happened, but no one was stealing glances at you (or the sad dude on your right). In a way, the lingering indifference was good news. It meant, he hadn’t made a scene in public. Still, you wanted to know what was wrong so badly, you kind of wished someone had walked up to you and showed you an embarrassing video of the boy pouring coffee all over some poor girl he had never met before.
It wasn’t until your blonde friend served her usual black coffee to the girl with the laptop his boss was close friends with that you put two and two together. Well, you didn’t actually do it on your own, per se, but it was thanks to your lipreading skills that you figured it out: Vernon had girl problems. Unfortunate.
‘You know, we don’t have to talk about her if it’s a super sensitive topic,’ you made another attempt to break the silence, sipping on your latte while staring at the guy’s side profile. It was weird, seeing him so blue when you were so used to his dorky smiles and unique sense of humour. ‘But if it’s something small, like a stupid argument or… dunno. Something. Then, maybe, I could give you some advice?’
Truth to tell, you weren’t a hundred percent sure that he was listening or that you could have helped him solve his relationship problem even if he had done, but you believed you were a good listener and that you had good insights on many topics. You could have come up with a couple of useful alternatives if only he had confided in you.
‘Thanks, but there’s nothing to talk about,’ the boy reassured you after a couple of heartbeats, his smile wide albeit insincere. The sadness in his eyes churned your heart.
Usually, when you were under the weather, you either went to sleep super early or kept your mind occupied with the cheesiest rom-coms one could have found on the internet, therefore you were well aware that not everyone liked to invite others to their pity parties. And you respected that.
It wasn’t long after you acknowledged Vernon’s answer with a low hum and gave him some space that Seungkwan walked up to you with a plate of dry cupcakes and other baked goods that they couldn’t have sold the following day. It was in the place’s policy to give them away for half of their price during the last hour while they were still open; and every barista at the shop knew by now that you were more than happy to buy them, so the gesture didn’t surprise you one bit. What took you aback, however, was the fact that it was already so late.
‘What about the upcoming party? I saw the posters around the counter. One year, hah?’ You asked both of them as you took a Refreshmint into your hands and bit off a huge bite from the mint choco cupcake. It obviously wasn’t fresh anymore, but its taste was still mouthwatering. No one could have fought you on that.
Too invested in the dessert, you didn’t realise that Seungkwan was signalling you to shut up until he cleared his throat and turned the situation more awkward. Your wide eyes shifted from him to Vernon in confusion, then right back at the barista.
‘It’s not just the coffee shop’s anniversary. Seungcheol hyung and Hoyeon unnie got together right after the grand opening,’ Seungkwan informed you with a frown, making you want to facepalm yourself because of your unfortunate choice of icebreaker. At this point, you could have tried to entertain the poor guy with your inexhaustible supply of embarrassing first date stories. Not that you had known about the other anniversary.
‘Oh! Oops. I’m sorry,’ you apologised immediately, unsure whether your gesture made things better or worse. Because in Vernon’s shoes, you would have hated it if your sour mood had brought down your friends’ as well. And your reaction - the way your hands fell back on the table lifelessly despite your usual eagerness to devour everything sweet within a metre radius - made it painfully obvious that you felt like you had to walk on eggshells around him. Why were you like this?
‘You can talk about couples, I don’t mind it. Seungkwan’s just overdramatic,’ Vernon claimed with an unamused scoff and a tired shake of his head. You had no idea how long he had been at Coffee Carat and when he had had that argument with his girlfriend (if he had a girlfriend to begin with AND he felt down because of a fight), but you figured Seungkwan was slowly getting to him. Which was insane, because Hansol Vernon Chwe was the most patient person you had ever met in your entire life and you had had Introduction to Law in first year with prof. Moon. That man could speak through whole seminars full of noisy know-it-alls with a straight face. You remembered getting upset on his behalf four or five times each week when they had refused to shut up.
Anyhow, in spite of the permission you got from Vernon, neither of you talked about couples while Seungkwan stayed at your table. Instead, you entertained him with fun stories and told him about the plans you had with the blonde barista after his shift. You even toned down your usual flirty bickering, although there were tons of comments exchanged between Seungkwan and you that you could have turned into something… more. Still, it wasn’t the time and you were happy to see that you weren’t the only one who put Vernon’s comfort first. The blonde boy’s dedication to cheer up his best friend made you fall deeper in love with him and smile wider. It made you more certain that you found the right guy. (Even though he occasionally stole from your food on purpose and lived off of theatrics.)
Chuckling, you snapped your head in the front door’s direction when Junhui closed it with a louder thud, then excused yourself to go to the toilet, because two cups of large drinks were your limit and you had been holding it back for a while by then anyway, solely because Seungkwan’s story had been too ridiculous to not hear the end of it. You had no idea he was so close to Yeseo’s Chan, but now you kind of wanted to get to know him better, too. Wearing each other’s boxers and running away from stray dogs in minus ten degrees celsius? You adored what they had.
You weren’t away for too long - it couldn’t have taken longer than five minutes -, but when you came back, the atmosphere was definitely a bit off. Not in the shop in general, but around Seungkwan. He was quieter and he needed a bit of time to get back to normal even after you all said goodbye to Vernon and you asked for a spare cleaning cloth from Wonwoo so that you could have helped them with the tables.
‘If I didn’t know you better, I would think you’re trying to come up with a nice way to cancel our plans,’ you attempted to lighten the mood with a light-hearted joke that luckily coaxed a scoff out of Seungkwan.
‘Just admit you’re bored without my stories and leave,’ he retorted, the smile in the corner of his mouth putting his good mood on display. He was just joking, it was obvious. Especially because you knew that he would have been the first one to complain if you had indeed left and he should have met you in front of the box offices like you had initially suggested.
So you let his sassy comment slide and bumped your shoulder into his arm to encourage him to get down to work. Wonwoo had already promised the two of you that Seungkwan could have left a little earlier if he had properly taken care of the customer area, so you were super determined to clean every table and chair, while he mopped the floor as quickly as possible.
In the back of your mind, you knew that you could have made it to the cinema in time even if you stayed until everyone else, but you had already purchased your tickets and despite your carefree nature, you would have hated to waste money on new ones. Therefore, you focused on your tasks and didn’t let Seungkwan distract you with his impromptu concert until you were a hundred percent sure you were ahead of time.
The only words exchanged between the two of you were his playful complaints because you weren’t paying attention to him and your flirty retorts about how clingy he acted and how he should have just admitted that he was bored without you and left. Hearing the latter, the blonde boy punished you with ten minutes of silent treatment during which you successfully finished your last table as well.
‘Hurry, hurry!’ You rushed him before he disappeared behind the brown curtains that hid the staff only area; then walked up to the counter and said goodbye to everyone one by one since it would have felt weird not to even if you weren’t close to all of them. As much as you could tell, they were Seungkwan’s second family, and you had this intense urge to be on good terms with everyone he cared about. You wanted them to like you.
Once the boy walked up to you in his streetwear, he bid his goodbyes as well, then took your hand in his and pulled you towards the front door. Outside, you talked about Vernon and his odd relationship with Rina, the upcoming anniversaries, and romantic gestures in general that you would have found too cringe or heart fluttering. Listening to his endless list, you realised that he was cheesier than you, but you also came to the conclusion that you would have loved to turn him into a blushing mess by making his dreams come true. Breakfast in bed? As easy as taking candy from a baby.
‘Wanna hear something silly?’ Seungkwan asked after a few heartbeats of silence, earning a zealous nod from you with his question. Seriously, he shouldn’t have asked by now. You were a sucker for his silly stories. ‘Vernon thinks you’re interested in me and that’s why you’re flirting with me all the time,’ he claimed with an amused chuckle that made you wonder: did he realise he was still holding your hand?
You raised an eyebrow and narrowed your eyes in suspicion. He definitely seemed clueless. (That, or he was a very good actor.)
‘Oh? Wanna hear something sillier?’ You asked back and swallowed down your own chuckle when he turned his head towards you and nodded. ‘I’m interested in you and that’s why I’m flirting with you all the time.’
Seungkwan’s surprise was written all over his face. However, behind his comically wide eyes and slightly parted lips, you could see his happiness, too, so you didn’t stress over what had already been said. You weren’t ashamed of your feelings, and a part of you honestly doubted you could have ever been able to create a more natural setting to pour your heart out to him if you had let this chance slip through your fingers.
‘Would you like to go out with me?’ You asked when you realised that you had rendered him speechless.
You were aware that just because he hadn’t rejected you yet, you shouldn’t have assumed that he felt the same way, but you couldn’t have helped yourself. You had to shoot your shot and ask him out while you could.
In the meantime, you reached the entrance of the closest metro station, so you turned ahead to not fall down the stairs because of a misplaced step. Knowing your luck, you wouldn’t have been surprised if you two had ended up in a hospital because of your clumsiness if you had kept staring at Seungkwan.
‘Sure, I mean, you’re really funny, so why not?’ The blonde boy said, his answer sounding more like a question than a statement. You didn’t have to steal a glance at his face to know he was flustered. He had been in your life for a bit longer than two months by then. Clearly, you had already heard his slightly pitched voice numerous times when his cheeks were painted red.
He wanted to act cool in front of you. So cute.
‘In that case, I’ll pay for the popcorn and call this our first date,’ you claimed with a cheeky grin, loving the upper hand he unintentionally gave you.
Until Seungkwan regained his composure and his steps came to an abrupt halt.
‘What? Absolutely not,’ he protested vehemently, shaking his head and his hands in front of his chest to give even more emphasis to his words. You furrowed your brows at the ridiculous sight. Did he have a problem with you asking him out on a date or something? He had never had any problem with you suggesting programmes until now.
You were about to tell him that just because you were a girl, you had every right to come up with ideas for your first date and pay on said program, but before you could have told him to suck your left toe, he cut you off with the rest of his objection.
‘Come on! We can do so much better than a boring movie date. Let’s go on our first one next weekend. Then, we can have a theme park date like in those cheesy kdramas,’ he said, and you scoffed, because he was so silly. Was he blocking the way to the fare gates to make sure your first date would be more extraordinary than a movie date where you could hardly speak with each other?
You shook your head with a soft smile and walked up to him so that you could take his hand again.
‘Okay, Lotte World definitely sounds better than a movie date,’ you agreed before you pulled him towards the gates. You used your transportation card to open the automatic door for him and pushed him forwards. ‘Enjoy your single days until you still can, Boo Seungkwan. I’ll be a handful,’ you warned him as you lifted your card in front of the panel one more time, paying for your fare, too.
‘Maybe I will,’ he teased, bumping his arm into yours when he saw your eye roll. Taking a couple of steps towards the metro, Seungkwan eventually reached for your hand and gave it a light squeeze. Then, with a content smile, you intertwined your fingers.

Last Song: In My Blood by The Score
youtube
Favourite Colour: Blue
Currently Watching: I'm keeping up with the new episodes for Dungeon Meshi and Wind Breaker. I might start watching a kdrama again, but I don't know yet. I might also pick up Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. I've read some good things about it. I'm not typically a fantasy watcher, but it's something I'm willing to check out.
Spicy/Savoury/Sweet: I like a good spice.
Relationship Status: A single father to four squishes/plush and a stuffed animal. Hopelessly dating my current hobby, writing.
Current Obsession: Sports anime - Blue Lock smacked an itch I didn't know I still had and it's bringing me back to my budding writer days where a large part how I came to be as a writer was during my sports anime era. And well, this little guy below is definitely an obsession.

Film Review: Summer Movie Rec Masterlist
Getting this out early for @notesoncrocs, sorry I'll add more descriptors later!
There has not been a more apt time to post a list of recommendations, as a lot of us actual ihouse are apart from each other, away from home. I watched these in the past month, so best believe these are certified fresh.
Movies.
Asteroid City: artsy Wes Anderson film about science fairs and plays, and alien visitations with a star-studded cast.
Past Lives: a slow-burn angsty A24 film about 인연 (in-youn), a Korean American girl and her childhood crush reignite sparks as they live their separate lives throughout the years and reminisce on what could've been. I thought some parts were funny, but movie overall just made me think that ordinary love is unspectacular but still moving/spectacular.
Pride and Prejudice: the classic enemies-to-lover story. I don't know if Mr. Darcy wooed me as a watcher, but I will say the movie captures the feeling of "yearning" really really well, much better than Past Lives.
The Roundup: No Way Out: stellar action movie from Korea. I am a sucker for these.
Barbie: Hilarious and fun for my eyes. Some scenes really hit for me, a deep fear of the world as it is today. Made me think of Virginia Woolf's writing:
"The most transient visitor to this planet, I thought, who picked up this paper could not fail to be aware, even from this scattered testimony, that England is under the rule of a patriarchy. Nobody in their senses could fail to detect the dominance..." - Virginia Woolf's, A Room of One's Own
Nothing Serious: a nerdy columnist is tasked with writing a sex column, so he dives into hook up apps and meets a girl, a low-key sex addict. I liked the blend of fun in the movie, casual sex, and the more moral questions, ethics of surveillance.
Argo: Action movie about the CIA operation in the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis that put together a whole fake Hollywood alien movie script/company in order to extract 6 Americans who escaped the embassy and were hiding in Tehran for months.
TV Shows.
Atlanta: College dropout (Donald Glover) sees his cousins rise as a rapper as a way to change their lives. The humor, the colors in the shots, the range of the fundamental human experiences covered, and the crazy crazy episodes that leap out of the story line, make this show like no other I've ever seen.
My Mister: Written by my favorite kdrama TV-writer, a girl in her early 20s lives a miserable, lonely, guilt-ridden life, chased by loansharks, burdened her ailing grandmother, and with no hope for any better. She enters a 9-5 company as a temp, and meets an older married guy who is as miserable as she is. She likes him a lot and the drama teeters around her morals and their ill-adjustment to society.
My Liberation Notes: Same writer, this time a depiction of what it's like to be in the outskirts of Seoul life, but quite literally/geographically. A girl in her late 20s finds little meaning in what every one in her Seoul office find meaningful, nor her family in the country side. This ones as equally about familial love as it is about romance, about hatred.
Beef: Y'all have all already watched it already. I'm watching it again with Hanu and Diego.

SO many times I want to watch a Chinese drama and I read the reviews and they're like... Good show started out great then just kinda went crazy?? It felt like entire storylines were cut nothing made sense anymore the characters went off the rails , the ending was trash. And I know a lot of dramas get cut due to censorship but damn there are so many dramas which would've been fantastic or at least decent if it wasn't for the insane amounts of cutting, even my favorites like ming lan and fairy and devil which were genuinely well done in most aspects felt like they had things cut out of them and their endings while satisfying were also rushed. I'm a longtime kdrama and jdrama watcher but cdramas cater to so many of my preferences especially with the historical/wuxia/xianxia stuff I wish they had more room to thrive bc they would've taken over the world. And maybe someday probably not in our lifetimes when the people first lead better lives they might.
honestly I don't think cdrama as an industry have that pressing of a wish to take over the whole world. there are 1.5 billion people in their domestic market. anything they do outside of that is just bonus. sure it's soft power, but the way censorship of media from how I see it, the focus is much on controlling the stuff people inside are exposed to, rather than influencing anyone on the outside.

stan twt is truly stupid. one moment everyone is praising taxi driver, and in the next ocassional kdrama watchers that are mainly kpop stans hop on twitter dot com and start bombarding the news tweet about td3 with qrts going 'nobody be watching that' or 'i'll get jehoon out of that damn taxi' while he's THE NO.1 FAN of taxi driver and that show was one of THE MOST SUCCESSFUL SERIES both domestically and internationally.
if you're that damn bored of it then DON'T WATCH IT. 'i also dropped s2' honey NO ONE CARES that's your decision. claiming he doesn't do any other project because he's 'too busy with taxi driver' is also a lie, at least you could have the decency to look up what projects he's working on rn... he is packed. and taxi driver s3 hasn't even started filming yet so what y'all be loud about again?
get the hell out of my face and leave the man out of your mouths.
