i don't think it's necessarily the ruling opinion, but there are no doubt some people upset with the end of the Monster Association arc and how everything was "fixed" with time travel. i would like to express the level on which i disagree with this sentiment.
this dislike of the arc's conclusion likely stems from the general dislike of "it's okay, we can just go back in time!" and "it was all a dream :)" style endings, specifically the idea that these endings, under any circumstances, are cop outs. i disagree. if One Punch Man ended there, with saitama travelling back in time to stop everyone's deaths and his fight with garou, i would be immensely dissatisfied with the ending. i think that would be fair. however, vitally, it does not. those events are only the conclusion to a single arc. it brings us to a similar situation as the ending of the lord boros arc, with a city destroyed but none of the important characters dead. therefore, i would argue that such a conclusion to an arc is par for the course for One Punch Man. but there is also the vital matter of "it was all a dream :)" situations and how, in my opinion, while often used as cop outs, they are not inherently so, and dogmatic insistence against them is detrimental to good writing. having every possibility on the table is important in order to develop a plot in the way best suited to it - it's simply lazy writing which misuses these possibilities.
the vital question here is: was the time travel ending of the Monster Association arc a cop out? no, it was not. in my opinion, the events which were reversed could nearly be considered expositional. the cosmic garou vs saitama fight and the events which caused it tell us a heck of a lot about the characters. that garou retains his humanity even after becoming monsterised - when he sees takeo dead, he realises that his actions have not led the world in the direction he hoped, which was always a fairer existence. (he's really not a bad guy at all.) what saitama is capable of - man caused untold destruction during this fight without much of a care, including nearly destroying the earth if not for blast and co; on the technical side, we are shown that his power increases exponentially in response to another being even beginning to approach his level of power, leading him to easily beat a puppet channeling the power of literal GOD. that saitama actually cares a heck of a lot about genos, and clings to him for his sense of humanity, which he is barely hanging onto. it also gives us a taste of god's power, for future reference. the only reason i don't consider it expositional - that is, a "what if" scenario purely for the audience's benefit, which fleshes out the characters under otherwise inaccessible circumstances - is that genos remembers. therefore, these events actually do impact the plot through him. (there's a chance that blast and co also know, which would also affect the plot, but i'm not sure.)
the ever-increasing stakes are vital. we're still within the time frame of shibabawa's great prophecy of a god-level threat. at first, we thought it was lord boros, then garou, and now it's looking like the god-level threat might literally be god. whose power we have gotten a taste of, thanks to the cosmic garou fight. things are very much not hunky dory. there is still plenty of opportunity for things to go terribly wrong, even if it didn't happen this time. especially now that we know that saitama is barely clinging to his humanity. the deaths of everyone he knew affected him for sure, but particular emphasis was placed on the death of genos, because he's saitama's hinge to humanity. (if you deny this, i will be forced to call into question your reading skills.) this ups the stakes in a unique way. before, the concept of genos' death carried far less weight. genos fans would be upset, naturally, and saitama would be pretty sad, because it was clear before this arc that he cared at least somewhat about genos. but now? we know how saitama will react to genos' death. and it's not in a sane manner. genos' death now carries with it the stakes of the earth potentially being destroyed and saitama losing his sanity. at least personally, i will look upon any close calls genos has in future with greater anxiety. this newfound knowledge that we have only gives more ground to the idea that the final enemy might be saitama. either the final enemy of the earth, if he turns into a villain (quite possibly due to losing his mind), or the final enemy of saitama himself, as he battles his depression and struggles to stay in touch with his humanity.
the time travel ending was not a waste, nor a cop out. i encourage you to look at the bigger picture instead of allowing your instinctive reaction of "time travel clutch bad" to inform your opinions. there is still the problem of time travel now being on the table as a solution, but this can be avoided in various ways. for example, the existence of the alternate universe where everyone died and saitama fought cosmic garou as a parallel universe created by time travel, therefore not really fixing the problem, but merely rerouting it. or having time travel somehow taken off the table as a possibility. for example (this is just conjecture and not supported by canon), if god dies, perhaps time can no longer be manipulated, and saitama will have to make a decision between destroying god or saving everyone but letting god live and continue to manipulate events, a decision which he can never bypass because he ends up at the same crossroads no matter which path he takes leading up to that. i understand the concern, and am somewhat concerned myself, but i trust ONE and Murata not to end the series in a dissatisfying way. also, i think it adds another level of interest, even. if saitama's power is so great that he can manipulate time, that he can do basically anything, then hitting a single roadblock which he cannot bypass regardless of his power would undoubtedly have incredibly interesting effects on him psychologically. he could be glad to not be all-powerful, and have to actually fight for something for once, or - much like the events with cosmic garou - he might realise that finding a difficult opponent (in the form of a fighter or an impossible decision) at the expense of the people he cares about doesn't actually make him happy or excited. that perhaps he should have turned his search for feeling and a reason to live elsewhere, beyond fighting, a long time ago. idk 🤷‍♂️

Saitama's lament
Redrawn, now full body and more accurate. The Jupiter background is not 100% final, I may redraw my own version at a later time. This is also at a lower resolution, bc my laptop is making some super concerning noises when I try posting the OG one bc it's way too big...
A bit of a special announcement: I'm planning to make a few prints to sell, I'm opting for later this year, so I redrew this at a larger scale and higher resolution. I think I will redraw some other artworks bc of it as well. I'll make a google form so you guys can pick which art you'd like to have a print of, and whichever gets a lot of votes, I'd make sure to make a few copies. I'll give updates on my twt!

pinagtagpo ngunit hindi tinadhana puso natin ay hindi sa isa't-isa
smol fic
Sucy didn't listen to music a lot but when she did, her playlist was admittedly pretty drab. She liked working in silence most of the time so she couldn't see much use in having a preference for music, but when she did she just let on whatever was on the radio, if there was.
Her roommate couldn't say the same. Actually, Sucy recants her statement about not having preference; she couldn't tolerate pop music for her life. Especially the ones that stayed blasting on the radio for months before being blown over by a newer, more obnoxious pop song.
Her siblings back in Cebu liked music though, enough for them to blast through their speakers and let the whole household know, not giving a shit if it bothered the other dwellers inside the house. However, as much as she claims she disliked the noise her siblings claim to be music, she couldn't help but let it trickle into her playlist. Hours upon hours of karaoke accounted for that.
So it's not weird to find some Filipino classics between the classical ones, the only other genre that Sucy could listen to while working. Some Eraserheads, UDD, Rivermaya, Itchyworms, Asin, hell, even Apo Hiking Society was in it.
Akko though, oh Sucy hates Akko's taste for music.
Robotic voices, insane fast-paced rhythms, either or also Kpop, Jpop, or just the latest Top 100 in the West. It was a mess. Much messier than whatever Sucy had back home. At least the language was familiar. This storm of a noise was not.
But Sucy sooner or later made peace with it when over time, she slowly let her walls down around Akko. Well, more like Akko had successfully knocked them down. Even after being treated like Sucy's guinea pig for her chemical experiments, she is still up and opening her arms to Sucy. A little too wide open.
One night, when Akko had come back from an afterparty that O'niell (the redhead asshat which she hung out so much) had held, she was drunk. Wasted. And accidentally puked on the foot of Sucy's desk. To be honest, she expected Akko to not come back until morning, as per usual of her shenanigans on campus.
She told Akko to clean her mess up before going to bed and went back to sleep annoyed. Akko, surprisingly, did as she was told. But had also climbed onto Sucy's side of the room. The sudden dip in Sucy's bed shook her awake.
Sucy leveled her drunk ass with a deathly stare. "What."
"What? It's cold in my bed."
"With all those stupid stuffed animals?"
"It's different," Akko sniffled. "Please? Just this once."
Sucy stared at Akko's face enough to see if this was the result of the foul gin in her breath and contemplated stuffing her in her duvet and letting her suffocate. But something must've happened at the party because Akko didn't usually look like that. Upon closer inspection, her eyes were glassy. Nose red, not from the cold, but from an obvious meltdown. After a few more seconds of staring, Sucy begrudgingly let her in.
And maybe it was the remaining alcohol in her system because then Akko turned her head and whispered, "Y'know, you're really nice."
"Shut up and go to sleep."
"No, for real. Like, thanks for putting up with my shit."
"Lotte puts up with you too."
"Yeah, love her for that. Ne," Akko suddenly turned and now they were face to face.
Too close, Sucy thinks. She hates that it's so close like this.
"Can you play some of your songs?"
"Why?"
"Dunno', just feelin like listening."
"If you're gonna start dancing on my bed, I will kick you out of this room and you're going to have to sleep in the hallway."
Akko giggles in this drunkenly stupid way and Sucy cannot believe that out of all the times Akko has laughed, this is the one that gets Sucy to think she's cute. She hopes it's dark enough that Akko doesn't notice her face turning red.
"I won't! My feet are way too tired for that," Akko shifts. "I trust you to have great taste. Just play anything. I'll like it."
"And if you don't?"
"It's you," Akko laughs. "I won't."
Somehow, Sucy lets her do this. And she opened her downloaded playlist; the only playlist on her phone, and set it down. It hummed out Orange and Lemon's Hanggang Kailan into the room, low enough to not be of an annoyance but enough for the lyrics to be heard.
Sucy blushes at the random pick of the song but doesn't move to change it. Fortunately, Akko doesn't understand Tagalog and just hums.
"Hehe, see. You have good taste."
"Shut up and go to sleep."
After that, Akko goes still and silent. Sucy can't do the same. She can sleep through Akko's snores like every other night, but when the music she typically has for the background is suddenly open like this, she suddenly becomes much more aware of the lyrics.
Umuwi ka na baby 'Di na ako sanay ng wala ka Mahirap ang mag-isa At sa gabi'y hinahanap-hanap kita
"Jesus Christ," Sucy whispers and turns so that her back is to Akko's. The bed is too small to move a lot. "This song is so corny."
She hears, feels Akko chuckling. "I like it."
The song is slow to end, and when it does, Armi Millare's voice comes out, serenading,
Ba't 'di papatulan ang pagsuyong nagkulang? Tayong umaasang hilaga't kanluran Ikaw ang hantungan, at bilang kanlungan mo Ako ang sasagip sa 'yo, whoa-oh
Again, this song is slow to close. When it does, Magnus Haven, a band Sucy isn't exactly familiar with but her sister had told her to listen, comes on. Sucy thought Akko was finally asleep before she heard her humming along to the second chorus. Sucy stills and lets her be, her eyes slowly closing, mind losing to sleep.
"... What does tadhana mean?"
"Huh?" Sucy rasps. "Destiny, or I guess, fate. Why?"
"Huh," Akko whispers the word again. "So you like those kinda songs, huh Sucy?"
Sucy blushed and was about to reprimand that Akko's taste in music wasn't better but then she heard the other girl snoring, already asleep.
Maybe it started from there, maybe earlier or later, but it was certainly a factor in how and why Sucy developed a crush like that.
Sucy wasn't as uncaring to Akko's business as she claims to be. As her roommate, she admittedly was more concerned for her than she let on. So when Sucy notices that Akko is not in the mood for experiments, or has other problems to deal with, Sucy gives her some allowance and lets her do what she thinks would calm her down. Letting her blast her music and dance her stress away, or letting her listen to Sucy's music and let her ask some dumb questions that would take her mind off what was confusing her.
Sucy is no white knight though. She won't be the one to save Akko in her every state. Sucy rationalizes her feeling of it being a result of proximity. And she won't let her heart get the best of her.
But one night, when Akko comes back to the room, Sucy notices her head is down. She is looking at something, but Sucy can't make it out.
That night, Akko asks if they could share the bed again. It's a cold night, Sucy rationalizes and lets her. Somehow, not even requested, Sucy hesitatingly places her arm across Akko's neck. Neither of them moves. Sucy waits.
"Diana asked me out today," Akko whispers. Sucy felt herself turn to stone. It's a moment before Akko says, "I don't know what she sees in a klutz like me."
everything.
Sucy holds her tongue and slowly breathes, trying to not let the night's cold make her freeze and give her an excuse to let Akko be trapped in her arms. Instead, she forces herself to sit up. Akko is facing away from her, looking at her hand.
Maybe this'll be the last time, Sucy thinks and her hand sneaks to Akko's free hand and touches it. It flinches a bit before slowly letting their fingers intertwine together. It's intimate like this. But Sucy knows this wouldn't be anything but platonic.
"Ne," Akko whispers again. "Will you play some of your songs again?"
And so Sucy does. When she sets her phone down, she slouches slightly, and unconsciously gathers a strand of Akko's hair in her free hand, playing with it absentmindedly. Akko doesn't say anything.
Sucy doesn't say she's finally made a separate playlist which consists of songs Akko said she liked.
Time goes to a crawl as Sucy's chest grows heavier. As the night goes on, as Akko's eyes shut to sleep, Juan Karlos's and Sucy's voice goes,
"Oh, 'di ba? Nakakaputang ina Tayo'y lumilipad, at ako'y iniwan mo pa 'Di ba? Ginawa mo pa akong tanga Tayo'y lumilipad, at ako'y iniwan mo, hmm"

What do you think Genos' reaction would be if he discovered that Saitama's mental health depends on him? And it's not just the "oh I would be so sad" type, is the "I would lose myself and I wouldn't even care about destroying the Earth" type.
You see....I was incredulous that after Genos absorbed his core's future memories, he failed to connect the dots that Saitama went that far because of him. That it was his death that made Saitama snap to the point of almost destroying the earth (and blowing up Jupiter) without a care. Alarmingly so. And then you realize Genos' own death was barely a concerned blip on his own radar (believing Saitama could just magically 'fix' everything no matter what happens.) Flabbergasted that his own disregard, self-worth and insecurities would fester under the ~splendor of Saitama's greatness~ to internalize such a colossal misunderstanding that 'he means nothing to Saitama'......D: Just...*violently shakes his shoulders* Genos baby, no. (His - and well, their chronic obliviousness, miscommunication, and dramatic irony reaching critical levels of frustration here)
Ahem, all that is to say...is that ONE is certainly aware. And if mp100's Separation Arc tells us anything, we can bet ONE's got this unresolved conflict in their relationship slowly simmering on the backburner for now, to be addressed all in due time. (Because the manga's already shown us their cautionary 'bad ending'; what's left is for them to progress where that doesn't happen again.) So will Genos ever learn (his own worth) how much he actually means to Saitama, and will Saitama ever consciously acknowledge how much Genos means to him?? As his very important emotional anchor tethering his sanity and humanity? Without conveniently forgetting, taking Genos' presence for granted, or continually sweeping it under the rug, leaving 'tomorrow's problems to tomorrow's him'?? I'd say only til ONE deems the time is right...

Only One Shines Greater
Synopsis: Years of working tirelessly, taking in a student with more potential than you provided by tenfold. That must hurt.
Tags: Angst, barely any plot, very much not proofread (made this at 3am after watching an ig reel), mildly hot take (idk)
Tumblr media
"There's nothing I can do," you shrug, shaking your head with a proud smirk. "You're perfect!"
You complimented your student well over a hundred times each lesson. You have been training and practicing religiously for an event hosted to show your abilities being rumored to come by. From your swings to your defensive attacks, you made sure each corner was backed and ready to go. All the while, a rookie comes by asking to train with you-- saying that they had developed a great interest in the events and needed guidance. To which, you agreed, happily.
For days and days, you two bonded and guided one another to core yourselves optimally. They got the hang of everything so quick, you'd become quite proud of your teaching style. You stood tall, shining at your ability to teach an amateur to soon become a natural--in only a few weeks!
So...
Why? Why did it hurt to see him go past you as if you were nothing. Had it been your fault that you were open for their moves and been defeated like used tissue?
You were supposed to be happy that you'd trained him so well. You were supposed to beam with pride. to cheer him on as he shot you down so easily. So, Why?
Why did it hurt so damn much to see him succeed.
After everything you put yourself through for it.
Was all of that hard work meaningless. Maybe it was all worthless put against those who are talented.
You sat out in a bench at the park, a few hours after the match. You ran off after briefly sharing a nod, not being able go handle seeing your student--no, your friend--win the one thing you were supposed to be good at. Petty as it was, you couldn't help but rush for some fresh air after the match was over.
Sat on the bench, you stared at the stars, memories of the match passing by you. It was never a competition, but it was a statement of strength--and if you aren't strong, what were you supposed to be.
"Theres nothing I can do." you state, eyes glazed, the shine of moon's light showing them slowly water. "You're perfect." You finish, a single tear rolling down your cheek as you saw your friend, once student, standing away from you with a look of absolute guilt.
Your smile never reach your eyes after that, a memory that you both will share. For their sake, you were quiet. For your sake, you retired early. Childish decision, but that guilt shreds them every day.

One of the most wholesome things
About the aftermath of the Monster Association showdown in the manga is this image.
Tumblr media
Initially, it's yeah, they're having lunch together, big deal. Where Saitama is, his disciple is usually not too far away. However, the story continues and we see that Genos doesn't set foot in Saitama's apartment until he's properly suited and booted and ready for action. He makes it very clear when he's in a position to be a disciple.
Sure, he came out to help Saitama recover their apartment, but that was business.
Here, he's here with Saitama to check out that nice place that Forte recommended because he wants to hang out. He's not here because there's a task to complete. He's not here because he's a disciple. He's here because he genuinely enjoys Saitama's company -- and vice versa.
That makes me so happy.
