River's English Major Summer TBR list(to encourage you to read new things):
because holy heck, i'm done with school already??? Anyways these are in no particular order tbh.
Anna Karenina, by Leo Tolstoy. I've started it before but lost track halfway through. I've got my own copy now so it should be easier.
Persuasion, by Jane Austen. I'm already halfway through this, and ANNE MY BELOVED---
The Only Problem, by Muriel Spark. I ordered it while i was at college and never got around to it, and I LOVE the satire of this woman.
Wise Blood, by Flannery O'Connor. You all know how much I adore her. I haven't read this novel yet!!! I'm so excited!!!
Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. I've never actually read it. I only sort of know how it goes, so this should be really good. I love gothic literature.
Cursed, by Marissa Meyer. I got it for Christmas and still have not read it. Curses on a reading-intense degree.
Providence Blue, by David Pinault. I also got this for Christmas, and have been looking forward to it.
Plague Journal, by Michael O'Brien. Dystopia or something. It should be really good.
The rest of Paradise Lost by John Milton. I'm not one for poetry, so this might be a last ditch effort when I'm at the end of my rope. I studied the parts about Satan and his fall, but I don't really know what happens in the rest of the book, so I'm very curious.
And last, but not least, Before Austen Comes Aesop: The Children's Great Books and How to Experience Them, by Cheri Blomquist. Another Christmas Present that may not be something most people would enjoy, but I think I really will enjoy it. I'm a nerdy nerdy Lit major at heart, and like. These kind of commentaries are really enjoyable to me.
Anyways, I hope you all have fun watching me get repeatedly broken apart by various classics and newer novels, as I tend to walk a strange line between fangirling and critical analysis, I suppose as any good literature lover does. I know last summer I started re-reading the KOTLC Series, and I'm not going to lie when I say I honestly think I'm tired of Shannon Messenger's style for now. I read a ton of her work last summer, and now I kind of want to go everywhere with my reading. I hope y'all don't mind that I'm gonna randomly post quotes from all over the place. :P
Then again, you're still here. Perhaps this is the kind of thing you've signed up for.
Happy Summer to every College kid who's almost free, and everyone else who still thinks it's only spring!!!!

I'm gonna be frank, Eddie just does not give me the impression that he was bullied all that much in high school to me. Especially as he got older, like he was the school drug dealer, he was not getting beat up by the same jocks who were going to be buying from him later that week. It just doesn't make sense to me!
I'm not saying he was never bullied at all (personally I think he was probably bullied by the people in his grade in like middle school, but leant more into the satanic image by the time he got to high school (which is when the satanic panic wouldve been starting) and people became more afraid to mess with him or it stopped when BS started dealing) or that people can't headcanon and project onto pm. It's fandom, do what you want lol. I've just gotten to the point where fics lose me whenever they claim Tommy/Steve/Jason was going around beating the shit out of him or shoving him in the halls every week or the like. Eddie just does not give the impression that he is scared of the jocks normally. He looks down on them and thinks he's better than them! He taunts them openly in front of everyone and pontificates on table tops.
I think if you take it in that context too, it makes the town turning on him more sinister? Like obviously, satanic panic was only growing at that point, and it was within the last year or two they started pointing at metal and D&D as recruiting centers for satanic cults. (Eddie also like an asshole is walking around with a satanic symbol on his jacket - peak edgy teen in the middle of a moral outcry.) But while people might've been afraid of him, and most definitely talked about him behind his back, that's worlds away from mob violence. The change was startling, even if Eddie might be able to see it on the horizon.
Idk to me that's more of what the hunt the freak line was about. The knowledge that they could turn on you and would if you gave them a reason (or if you want to go with the Eddie is closeted interpretation - if he got outed). I think he probably has been called the freak for a while but honestly I think he's proud of it at this point.
Obviously all of this is up to interpretation, I guess I've just gotten to the point where a lot of the popular fanon interpretation doesn't feel like Eddie to me anymore

Rare pare with ships? Nah nah nah, let me raise you one, rare pare but with regressors and caregivers.
Here me out...
I want more content with little's and caregivers who have little to no reason in canon to care about each other.
Perhaps a villain taking care of a regressed hero.
Characters who only ever interacted a few times in their media yet seem to have the best parent + child vibe to them.
Characters who clearly care about each other but in canon wouldn't be considered good "parental figures"
Characters who haven't interacted in a positive light canonically but it just makes sense that one would be a regressor and the other looks after them little
Characters who just don't make sense but it's a cute idea therefore it works.

The Percy Jackson fandom really needs to learn how to tag properly lol
Edit: it occurs to me that my habit of talking in the tags makes this post harder to reblog and get my point across. While I didn’t actually intend for the fandom to see this initially, I have decided that it annoys me enough to make this reblog-friendly. So here’s the tags I originally put down:

Sometimes I miss actively participating in fandoms, but sometimes I see things that remind me how these days I find myself having a better time just keeping to myself and the small handful of people/groups I trust while still tossing some art out there publicly every so often.

k look my main problem with Turning Red(besides the sexualization of minors, which i could do a whole separate rant about) is actually that it was hailed as this "normalization of periods!!!! women's bodies that function!! positivity!!!" when in reality it was treated with a level of disgust, cringe, and horror that only 8th grade boys have about periods and period products
literally like from the very beginning the mom is shocked and horrified that her 13 year old daughter got her period one morning.
A adult woman. A THIRTEEN YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. Look, idk when y'all got your lady days, but my mom told me about it when I was eleven. Because that's like the earlier end of the spectrum of when it can start????
Mei is just so embarrassed about everything, and the mom is so caught off guard and keeps referring to it as an emergency?? Like ma'am idk if anyone has told you but this is actually completely normal and a thing that every single woman in the entire world for the most part goes through once a month and the way your are acting right now is going to do negative amounts of good once your daughter actually does start her lady days and need your help, your embarrassing of her right now is also going to make kids in the audience believe that their own womanly weeks are freak-out worthy, and that their parents aren't going to understand or treat them like people when their bodies start changing.
And then, ugh.
Like, I get it. It's supposed to be realistic. But dear stars the reactions of the school kids to perfectly normal feminine products? Like for the love of all the stars in the sky, that's not a good reaction, and while it might be a reaction you could get in 8th grade, it's not what adults should be thinking, and the whole way it's handled is entirely disrespectful of Mei and her wishes and her body.
Like. Ugh.
And people were all so excited.
They were jumping up and down like "OOOOHHHHHH LOOK AT THAT THEY TALKED ABOUT PERIODS!!!"
Well, they didn't talk about them right.
Wanna know how my mom reacted? I was all embarrassed and she just smiled and said, "This is a day we should celebrate cause you're growing up." And like, we didn't. Because it was Thanksgiving. And we were at my grandparents'. But you get the vibe!!! She was quiet, and gentle, and she respected me and my wishes! She knew that getting your lady days for the first time is EMBARRASSING and you're NERVOUS and you don't know HOW ITS GONNA WORK!
You've never had to do stuff before and she didn't yell at my father or tell me it was an emergency. That's just.
It's not loving, it's not kind.
And it's not the response you want little girls in the audience to be watching and thinking, "Is that how my mom is going to react to me? Is that what's gonna happen? Is she gonna show up at the school? Are all my classmates going to laugh???"
THATS NOT GOOD! Stars above!!!!
Ugh.
Look, I know not everyone had the same experience as I did with their bodies and changing, but I'd like to think we all want our space and our privacy.
I'd like to think that if your lady days were embarrassing and your parents treated it like an emergency, you'd much have preferred the kind of calm of a woman who's had her womanly week every single month for over twenty years. I think you'd have preferred someone tell you that you're doing a great job and that it's normal and not an emergency. I think you'd have preferred being treated like a human and not a mutating creature from the red lagoon.
Anyways.
Them's my thoughts.
