dark academia stationary tips? ideas? please? i beg of you.
Deepen Your Dive into Dark Academia Stationery:
Tumblr media
Crafting the Canvas:
Paper: Embrace the tactile – rough-edged parchment, marbled sheets, hand-dyed linen paper. Seek antique ledgers, vintage score sheets, or maps for a truly timeworn effect.
Ink: Let your words drip in history – deep emerald greens, rich burgundy, charcoal grey. Discover shimmering gold or silver for elegant annotations. For an extra flourish, explore calligraphy inks and vintage fountain pens.
Beyond the Basics:
Washi Tapes: Forget the neon, embrace botanical prints, celestial patterns, and antique library stamps. Layer them for depth, use them to seal letters, or decorate journal edges.
Stickers & Tags: Pressed leaves, dried flowers, and ephemera from library archives add a touch of natural mystery. Vintage anatomy diagrams, constellations, and old library catalog cards offer an academic flair.
Sealing Secrets: Wax seals & ribbons elevate simple letters into heirlooms. Choose deep green wax, embossed with a raven, a quill, or your own monogram. Tie with silk or hemp twine for a finishing touch.
Unleashing the Scholarly Spirit:
Journals & Notebooks: Opt for leather-bound volumes, with aged paper and ribbon bookmarks. Decorate with antique maps, pressed flowers, or handwritten quotes from your favorite poets.
Organizing Knowledge: Index cards, vintage library pockets, and antique file folders help categorize your studies. Label them with elegant script and adorn them with botanical sketches or scientific diagrams.
The Scholar's Tools: Antique brass compasses, vintage rulers, and magnifying glasses add a touch of academic ambiance to your desk.
Whispers of Antiquity:
Poetry & Letters: Handwrite in a flowing script, penning sonnets or letters to fellow scholars. Let foreign languages add a touch of mystery, or slip in quotes from forgotten classics.
Ephemera & Found Objects: Tuck pressed leaves, antique botanical prints, or ticket stubs from forgotten museums into your notebooks. Let them spark inspiration and evoke past journeys.
The Art of Storytelling: Create your own dark academia-inspired stationery. Make vintage-themed envelopes from maps, decorate boxes with constellation patterns, or craft your own wax seal stamp.
Remember, dark academia is about embracing an atmosphere. Let your creativity flow, curate your collection with intention, and transform your stationery into a portal to an enchanting world of forgotten knowledge and secret societies.

night sky in your eyes
SWTCW ||| Rex x Reader (platonic or romantic) ||| 500 words
for @urfriendlyneighbornightfury for the @starwarsfandomfests 2023 Secret Santa event!
---------------------------------------
“Are you sure we’re heading the right direction?” Your words come out in a slight pant. The two of you have been walking for quite some time now, trekking along the snow-covered path through the forest. The latest storm’s effects were still visible as the trees bowed towards the path from the weight of the heavy snow on their branches.
Rex chuckles slightly. You feel a slight flash of ire at how he sounds unaffected by the hike, but it quickly fades to amusement as he turns to look at you, his nose and cheeks flushed pink from the cold.
“I’m sure,” he reassures you. “I’ve been up this path before.”
“Not in the wintertime,” you counter. Rex has turned around again as he continues leading the way, so he doesn’t see you pause to scoop up a clump of snow and throw it at his back.  Your victorious laugh fills the air as he whirls around to only get nailed in the face by the second snowball you throw. He sputters in surprise, losing his balance and falling backwards into a drift.
“Sorry!” You call, stumbling your way through the snow towards him. “I was aiming for the back of your head. I didn’t think you’d turn around!”
Rex blinks up at you blearily. There’s still snow trapped in his curls and on the tip of his nose, so you brush it off for him. He quirks a smile when you offer him your hand to help him stand again. “Thanks, but…” He pulls sharply, and you let out a yelp as you fall on top of him and Rex rolls you over into the snow. It’s so cold, seeping in through your jacket and wetting your hair.
“No fair!” You shriek, laughing as you try to escape, but Rex drags you down by the waist. At this point, you’re both equally covered in snow, so you give up and flop limply back on the ground.
You close your eyes for several minutes as you both lie there together, faces upturned towards the sky, sides pressed against each other. Rex inhales sharply and you know he’s about to break the silence that’s fallen. “Thanks for bringing me out here,” you say, determining to speak first. “Even though it might be a bust, this has been a lot of fun.”
“What do you mean?” Rex’s voice is light but full of awe. “It hasn’t been a bust— look.”
You open your eyes and your breath catches in your chest. The aurora borealis, what you’ve come all this way to try and see, have lit up the night sky. The purples blend into pinks and greens, a neon watercolor painting against a black canvas. They move in a wave, dancing across the sky with you, Rex, and the stars as their captive audience. You risk a glance in Rex’s direction to find he’s already watching you, a smile still on his face.
“I’m glad you came with me.”
His expression softens at your words. “I’m glad I came, too.”

@dandenbo asked me for the art asks: 🎠What is a typical 'workflow' for a piece from idea to finished? It turns out to be a long answer so here's its own post, under the cut to save your dash! How I go from screenshot to painting: (This is not intended to be a 'this is how you do it!' kind of guide. I absolutely don't do an optimal route, this is just how I go about painting and what works for me! I've done a workflow for a screenshot to painting as I do a few different things but this is one I could explain somewhat coherently. My comics tend to be created pretty chaotically lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1) I take an ungodly amount of screenshots while playing. Also pester friends for their screenshots or stalk the group discord for interesting shots.
2) Go through all those screenshots cursing why I took so many, looking for those great moments that I want to paint. I’m particularly looking for nice poses/captivating moments, dynamic lighting or interesting expressions, and they don’t need to have all 3 as we can fix some of that in the next step. Here’s the screenshot I chose for my Keahi x Thane piece:
Tumblr media
It was a cute, soft moment between them and I liked the highlight at the edge of their profiles. 3) Refine the screenshot. I don’t use anything fancy for this. I game on windows PC, so I open up the screenshot with windows photo editor. I crop the image, play around with saturation, exposure, contrast, just basic editing until it looks tastier. For this piece I wanted it to be hyper colourful and vibrant, leaning towards warmer tones.
Tumblr media
4) Decide what I will change, then gather references for those changes. In this case I was fortunate that not a lot needed changing. I knew I wanted to move Thane’s eye position to looking at Keahi rather than the way he is slightly off focus, do a more realistic ear with earrings for Keahi, make Thane a little more smiley and lower his eyelid and give Keahi nicer eyelashes. I keep a whole bunch of art guides and tutorials on my PC so I grabbed the necessary ones and sent them to my ipad ready to have on hand for the sketch stage. I have Thane’s character model in XNApose, so I can check things like his eyelid specifically in that (this is actually for a different project but shows you what I mean)
Tumblr media
If I was going to change up the lighting/shading I would also gather references for that. For example sometimes i’ll take screenshots of lighting schemes I love from films/tv shows (think the strong teal and orange scheme in Mad Max or the neons of Blade Runner). Or for precise shadows, I can again use XNApose. I also have a little 3d printed Thane head I can shine a torch at and take photos of to get shadow ideas. For humans there’s lots of reference to be found with online searches, I find pinterest more useful than google for this. For specific expressions or body parts, i’ll just take photos of myself (hand poses, smiling from the right angle etc.) My camera roll is an interesting place. I have drawn drell frills on my neck and on my chest before to see how the lines would fold at certain angles. 5) Setting up a canvas I work in procreate. For a piece like this I try to go pretty big, say 5000 x 4000 pixels, then i’ll crop down later as needed. 300 DPI. As I work, I’ll make duplicates and continue on the copy each fresh session. When i’m finished I make a backup save of the PNG and .procreate files on an SSD. I immediately turn the background colour down to a more muted colour to not burn my retinas. If i’m using a textured background like an oil board i’ll insert it, and any overlays like canvas effects. Set up my layers from the start basically for easy toggling throughout. I try to be good and label things to make life easier, it doesn’t always happen though. I don't wear a digital glove or use paper effect screens but I do have a bottle of screen cleaner and a microfibre cloth handy at all times. 6) Sketch. I’m still very much learning to draw. I tried for a long time to do the classic ‘ball for a head, draw the planes/lines etc. It was a constant struggle and never clicked for me, the ball especially always made things much worse, turning a circle into a 3d image in my head just does not happen. I find it better to just start drawing and work things out as I go (I use procreates reference window to see my screenshot). So I’ll have my sketch in one canvas, and i’ll also have a second canvas with the photo ref on it at the same size, and if I feel like something is really wonky and off i’ll test my lines over the photo to see what’s gone wrong, then go back to the sketch and correct the areas that revealed. Sometimes I’ll use the grid feature if i’m getting stuck.  Here's a few of the sketch stages:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here I tried out the lines on the photo and noticed that Thane’s frills were a little too far to the left, and Keahi’s eyebrow needed to arch down towards the nose.In the next pass I correct these:
Tumblr media
Also, and I know i’m gonna get side eye from some people for this but I really could not care less to be honest. On some pieces i’ll just trace the screenshot. Sometime I just want to get to painting, am not in the mood or mindspace for a learning experience, and this is a hobby. It’s my screenshot, no one is getting ripped off. My latest Javik piece was done this way 🤷‍♂️ 6) Painting. I’ll start by blocking in the background and the portrait flats, usually on separate layers. I try to have an idea of the background colour from the start as this can effect the whole piece overall, but sometimes you just gotta change it as you go so having it on a different layer makes this much easier.
Tumblr media
The painting itself I’ll lay down wider areas of colours, then start going in and refining bit by bit, I tend to work on one area at a time, and sometimes I’ll get pretty well rendered on a small area before moving on, other times work on a wider area. It really depends on my mood and what i’m vibing with that day. Like you can see here I’ve done some general messy colouring all over Keahi, but done a lot of refinement on the eyeball:
Tumblr media
7) Finshing the piece, uploading and testing: When I’m sick of rendering the painting and don’t think I can add anything more to it without gnawing my own wrist off, it is time to finish up! I make sure I toggle all the layers I want on, add a top signature layer (lol I lie I forget this all the damn time). Then i’ll upload the piece to my google drive and open it up on my big 4k monitor on my PC, and on my phone, and see how it looks (my ipad is a 9.7inch air). I find that once off my ipad, it often looks a little less saturated and contrasting as it does in procreate. So I might go back and change the levels if it’s too big a difference until it looks decent across devices (it’ll never look perfect on them all though, just gotta find that happy medium).
Tumblr media
8) Posting online I really don’t have any strict steps for this. I know some people go for optimal posting times, and will make multiple copies of their pieces in different sizes to fit better on different sites (damn you instagram and your need for everything to be square). I… do not do any of this lol. I post when I’m done whatever time or day that is. I do tend to reblog/retweet etc before I go to bed, as I live in the UK and that will at least be getting into evening time in US. I reblog my own stuff a fair bit.

So this isn't a request for writing but I want to ask if you made that Zoya banner on the rockstar Zoya HC yourself. Cause if you did I would love to know where you found Zoya's signature as a lone png and if you have other characters' signatures as well? I'm making small headers of each character for drabbles and I would love if you could direct me to where I could find assets like that.
Assuming you mean this one?
Tumblr media
If so let me break it that it’s actually not her signature— but a similar one! I made it on Canva, using the font Regular Brush !!
Tumblr media
I wrote the name in all capitals to make the signature more alike, as well as using and intesing the Neon effect to give it that ‘glow’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is how the brush looks finalized as well as with other sinner’s names.
BTW! Based on the colors of the images you choose, canvas will recommend you colors that match— which is how I mange to find colors similar to the images of the banner to make the text sorta match as well; just in case youre wondering.
Also an example:
Tumblr media
But yeah it is all canva magic and similar fonts 😭 I wish I could get the actual signatures, it would be cool but perhaps that will be for the future; it would seriously be very handy for banner designs.
As well as pngs of official PTN work, perhaps I can actually make a drive folder for that if its needed.
If you need it, here is the size of the banners I use
Tumblr media
Hopefully this helped although it isn’t what you expected it to be hun 🖤 wish you luck on your drabbles btw! Can’t wait to read them! Send me an ask if you have more questions or need me to clear out something! 🎀

2319 Chapter 9 — Start of Love & War || Young!S.S × F!Reader.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Word Count: 2K Genre: Young Love, Diary Entry, Flashbacks. A/N: Inspired by the Korean Drama 2521. Thank you for being patient guys, I do apologize if it's short! I admit I've sorta forgotten some stuff so I'm rereading everything lol. I might focus on the present next chapter.
The night of July 25 1999, it was a hot, scorching summer, and night had come with a breeze like a balm. It was noisy all around the camp; not only your group was the one waiting for the meteor shower to start. The radio was on for the forecast and some people were singing, others were telling stories and laughing around the fire.
The midnight blue sky is exuberant, twinkling with bright, white sparkles and fireflies.  Stephen turns his head to look at you, his face illuminated by the stars. He digs his fingers into the soft grass of the hill.
At some point, you caught Stephen staring at you as you blew a deep sigh out of your lungs and you felt embarrassed, somehow. Especially after confessing to each other that both of you have lingering feelings mutually.
"Oh my! Look up!" Donna gasped and pointed skyward as millions of diamond streams fell from the sky.
Stephem smiled at you and asked you if you had ever seen a meteor shower before. “No, it’s for the first time”, you answered and suddenly quickly turned away to hide the hint of pink blooming on your cheeks.
He pretended he did not notice and he went on, “It’s interesting how people are fascinated by this phenomenon, when the Earth basically passes through the tail of a comet, which collects everything it finds in its journey through the Universe.”
Both of you gazed up at this dark, vast canopy sprinkled with millions of diamond lights. So mesmerised were you by the sight of it, your voice took on a dreamy tone when you answered him, “Yes, but how beautiful it all looks from down here.” you softly chuckled.
He laughed softly together with your silvery laugh. It was so sweet and sunshiney, he half-expected flowers to sprout on the ground wherever you walked and a coterie of singing woodland animals to trail behind you while you traipsed through meadows or whatever girls like you did.
Both of you lifted your gaze and saw small shiny globes shooting across the sky, leaving behind a neon-like effect. Exclamations and applause could be heard around you, and you felt him take your hand and clutch it slightly. All he seemed to notice were your bright eyes, they were close enough that he could see the way the lights from the comets reflected in your eyes, like tiny star-beams streaking across an endless night. Your lips parted, lush and pink, and an insane desire to find out whether they tasted as sweet as they looked now gripped him. He nodded with a very warm glow in his eyes, a very softened looking face and an almost hidden smile.
You were too absorbed by the meteors to react to his actions but your heart did skip a beat as you watched the whole show on an indigo background, like a huge canvas, which would lift with the sunrise.
Stephen closed his eyes and made a wish for time to stop for a short while, so that he can savour the moment with you. His chest aches at the idea of losing the thread of this night, and the ease that has shaped between you, an ease born of weeks instead of months or years, but it is something, fragile and lovely.
Stephen sighed softly, stealing glances at you whenever he can so that his photographic memory will have your image seared into his brain. Then, he looks skyward to see the night sky, twinkling with myriads of mysterious stars, blue-black velvet, making the heart stop from the power of mystical attraction.
Something inside Stephen sparked and right there and then, he has made up his mind. He was going to finish what he started, he will graduate university.
Stephen's Flashback
“It’s laughable, isn’t it?” He says.
“What?” Beverly asks him.
Stephen gestures to himself. “This.” He leaned his head against the headrest and closed his eyes. “I should just quit Mom. I’m obviously not cut out for this.”
Beverly sighs. “Not cut out for what? College? Real life?”
Stephen shakes his head. “Responsibility in general, really. Dad was right when he told me that I'm no better than his estranged brother, Uncle Rainer. He was right about that, at least.”
"This year is just a really bad year, Stephen. A really, really challenging year. Sometimes in life, we need a few bad days in order to keep the good ones in perspective.” His mother reached out to hold his hand while keeping the other one controlling the steering wheel.
"You might not see it yet, Stephen but you have what it takes. Your grandfather always tells me to finish what I started, thrust aside your trepidation and self-doubt. Bare your teeth and embrace the process. Most importantly, finish what you start. You’ll be surprised by what unfolds and presents itself before your very eyes." Beverly continued with a slight imitation of her father.
She continued, "And if at the end of it all, you still don’t like medicine, you can do whatever you want to do. You're young, this is not the end of the world."
▪︎▪︎▪︎
August 5th 1999
“Again, (Y/N)!” If you hear the words 'again' and (Y/N) together in a sentence one more time, it might be the thing that finally tips you over the edge.
You've been on the edge since you woke up this morning with a headache sent directly from the pits of hell, so the last thing you need right now is more grief from Coach George Laurier. You focus on suppressing your annoyance, like you do every training session when he makes it his mission to push you to your limits.
Rationalising it’s his dedication that makes him such a successful coach, he decided throwing your ice skates at him is something that should stay in your imagination.
It’s been a few days since the camp and right when you got back home, your father instantly gave you a condition. A condition to make it ‘fair’ according to him. Since they allowed you to go on that trip, the least you could do was start training. So here you were, training for the next olympic games. You’ve been so focused that you haven’t been able to hang out with Donna.
“You’re being sloppy, (Y/N)!” he yells as you fly straight past him. “Sloppy skaters don’t get gold medals!”
What did I say about not throwing skates at him? I already have a gold medal.
“Come on, (Y/N)! Put in some effort for once.” Alex snickers, poking his tongue out at you when you shoot him a cold glare.
Stupid Alex Laurier. Just because he is the best male hockey player the University of Washington, Devonport has to offer and having an ex-figure skater as a father, Alex acts like knew everything about both figure skating.
“It’s coming, Coach,” you say with as much fake enthusiasm as possible. “I’m getting there; it’s not perfect yet, but I’ll keep practising.” It’s a minor lie, a harmless one. You are getting there. What you've failed to mention is you're only getting there off the ice, specifically when you're attached to equipment that helps you get there.
“She’s getting there,” Alex lies, throwing an arm around his Dad's shoulders. “Hang in there just a bit longer, (Y/N).”
It was nice for Alex to be on your side and show a united front to his father.
George mutters something inaudible and waves you off flippantly. “I’ll see you two back here tomorrow, and if you could both not be late, that would be great. I’m fairly certain eating McDonalds before training isn’t going to get either of you onto the Olympic team. Understood?”
Shit. “Yes, Coach,” you say in harmony.
Alex is staring at his phone, waiting for you in the lobby when you finally exit the women’s locker room.
“I freaking told you he’d know.” you groan, swinging your bag toward him as soon as you're close enough to hit him in the stomach with it. “I didn’t even have anything!”
He grunts at the impact, tugging the bag from your hands and flinging it over his shoulder. “The man has the nose of a bloodhound.”
You climb into Alex's new SUV, the latest guilt gift from his uncle, and head home. Alex and you decided it would be cool for him to be your ride since he has practice two hours after yours.
Alex stops at a stop light and looks over at you while you rummage through your purse for your most prized possession.
“What does the planner say you’re doing tonight?”
You snicker, ignoring his teasing tone. “Getting laid.”
“Ew,” he says, the tip of his nose wrinkling as he grimaces. “Keep your imaginations to yourself.”
“What is that supposed to mean?!”
“Nothing,” Alex smiles to himself while you roll your eyes, “So. . . I heard Paris talked to you before we left camp. . .What did she say?”
You scoff at the memory of that morning before separating, “Y'know she apologised but then she said I should've let everyone know I couldn't swim.”
“Wow.” Alex widens his eyes, “What a massive bitch.”
“I'm over it, just as long as I don't see her again. . . Robbie was more upset than her.”
Alex pulls over in front of your house and lifts the handbrake, “To be honest, me too,” Alex said. “You know what?”
“What?” You asked, looking over at him. Before you could even register what was happening, he leaned across the car and pressed his lips against your cheek. You almost jerked back in surprise.
“All right,” he said, pointing at his cheek. “Lay one on me.”
Before you could think twice, you planted a kiss right on his cheek. He smelled like pine trees. “There.”
He grinned, sitting back just as fast as he’d leaned over. “That fixes it for both of us—and by that I mean my Dad being a pain in the ass.”
And that’s when I fainted. Okay, I didn’t really faint. But something inside you snapped like an elevator cable, your heart plummeting to your feet. You felt light-headed and combustible, your neck hot beneath your collar.
“Thanks,” You said, laughing a little. Thanks?! Someone kisses you and you say thanks?! Did you learn nothing from Stephen Strange?
“That takes the pressure off.”
No, it doesn’t! Now I have no idea what’s going on! Do you like me or are you just being a good friend in the most confusing, lip-touching possible way?!
“Hey,” he said. “What are friends for, right?”
Not this! You climbed out of the car onto shaky legs. Alex Laurier kissed you. Alex. Laurier. Kissed. You.
▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎
You shut the door of your room and that’s when you snapped out of your trance. You dropped your bag on the floor and combed back your hair, “What the hell was that guy thinking?”
You rushed to the window to let some fresh air in, not realising that Stephen was there, “You look frazzled.” He looked up from the guitar he was holding.
You jumped slightly and cleared your throat, "It's nothing."
“Really? That didn't seem like nothing to Alex.”
Your face flushed at the mention of his name. You sat down, wondering if Stephen saw Alex kissing you on the cheek. He seemed so casual about it—he probably wouldn’t even think about it again.
“He was just trying to cheer me up. His dad was very hard on me during training today.” You replied, which was not all a lie since you think that's what Alex was doing—at least that's what 'taking pressure off' is to him.
“Nice to see that it worked.” Stephen chuckles and sets his guitar on his stand, “Enjoy your sessions with him.” With that, Stephen grabbed his jacket and left his room, shutting the door behind him. Stephen's actions stung and it caught you off guard, rendering you speechless. Even though he was casual about it, it felt as though there was a blizzard right beneath his calm persona.

São Paulo exhibitions offer a window on to a Brazil seldom seen
Tumblr media
Otherworldly neon faces float among a profusion of shapes and curving lines on the vibrant canvas “Sky Bird Boa Constrictor” by Acelino Huni Kuin. The painting is a commotion of fish, multicoloured birds, leaves and scales, bordered by black-and-white zigzags. Relax your focus and the patterned body of the snake appears, winding itself through the work. The effect is both dreamlike and riotous.
Psychedelic depictions of animals, plants and people are a frequent feature in Mirações (Visions), an exhibition of artists from the Huni Kuin indigenous peoples at the São Paulo Museum of Art. Exploring the mythologies and ancestral tales of the Amazonian tribe, many of the works are inspired by the consumption of ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic drink prepared from jungle plants and used in shamanic rituals for centuries by native South Americans. In a curator’s essay, one of the artists, Ibã Huni Kuin, describes the process of putting the exhibition together as “working in the gallery with music and myth”.
The show is one of a pair that has inaugurated a year of programming dedicated to indigenous histories (or stories, depending on translation) at the cultural institute. This underscores a growing recognition of artists from Brazil’s indigenous populations, who were portrayed in idealised terms by the newly independent nation’s Romanticism movement in the 19th century and then studied as anthropological subjects. Their own cultural output was often not afforded the status of art, instead considered craftsmanship. Now, though, work by Brazil’s original peoples is gaining space in the country’s most prestigious galleries.

Nike Air Max 1 Golf  “US Open”
Starting with the recently teased Masters edition “Always Fresh,” the Air Max 1 Golf is the canvas that Nike (NYSE:NKE +1.70%) has chosen to paint on for its 2023 tournament themed releases. Accompanying the peach themed version now is a neon splashed colorway to honor this year’s US Open in Los Angeles.
Given the prominence of street art and murals in LA, Nike has chosen to go with fluorescent tones, airbrushed effects and script lettering to commemorate the tournament. Using a base of white for the quarter panels, the neon green mudguard wraps around the shoe from toe to heel, while the toe box is constructed from a pink ripstop material.
Moving on, the dark grey Swoosh is highlighted with Off-White™ style contrast stitching, while paint splatter meets the beefed up Air Max Units. This same speckled pattern is used on the laces, which weave across the tongue where script airbrush Nike Golf logos are found. The graffiti inspired artwork is used once again on the heels as well as the insoles, and then one last time on the translucent outsoles.
As with the AM1 G “Always Fresh,” look for a release sometime later in the season as we get closer to the US Open at The Los Angeles Country Club.

“Concetto Spaziale” - Lucio Fontana
Lucio FontanaB. 1899, ROSARIO DE SANTA FÉ, ARGENTINA;
D. 1968, COMABBIO, ITALY
Lucio Fontana was born on February 19, 1899, in Rosario de Santa Fé, Argentina. His father was Italian and his mother Argentinean. He lived in Milan from 1905 to 1922 and then moved back to Argentina, where he worked as a sculptor in his father's studio for several years before opening his own. In 1926, he participated in the first exhibition of Nexus (formed in 1907), a group of young Argentinean artists in Rosario de Santa Fé. On his return to Milan in 1928, Fontana enrolled at the Accademia di belle arti di Brera, which he attended for two years.
The Galleria del Milione, Milan, organized Fontana's first solo exhibition in 1930. In 1934, he joined the group of abstract Italian sculptors associated with the gallery. The artist traveled to Paris in 1935 and joined the group Abstraction-Création (Abstraction Creation, 1931–36). The same year, he developed his skills in ceramics in Albisola, Italy, and later at the Sèvres factory, near Paris. In 1939, he joined the Milanese anti-Fascist artists' group Corrente (Current, 1938–43). He also intensified his lifelong collaboration with architects during this period.
In 1940, Fontana moved to Buenos Aires. With some of his students, he founded in 1946 the Academia de Altamira, from which emerged the "Manifesto blanco" (White manifesto, 1946). He moved back to Milan in 1947 and in collaboration with a group of writers and philosophers signed the "Primo manifesto dello spazialismo" (First manifesto of spatialism). He subsequently resumed his ceramic work in Albisola to explore these new ideas with his Concetti spaziali (Spatial concepts, 1949–60).
The year 1949 marked a turning point in Fontana's career; he concurrently created his first series of paintings in which he punctured the canvas with buchi (holes), and his first spatial environment, a combination of shapeless sculptures, fluorescent paintings, and black lights to be viewed in a dark room. The latter work soon led him to employ neon tubing in ceiling decoration. In the early 1950s, he participated in Italian Art Informel exhibitions. During this decade, he explored working with various effects, such as slashing and perforating, in both painting and sculpture. The artist visited New York in 1961 during a show of his work at the Martha Jackson Gallery. In 1966, he designed opera sets and costumes for La Scala, Milan.
In the last year of his career, Fontana became increasingly interested in the staging of his work in the many exhibitions that honored him worldwide, as well as in the idea of purity achieved in his last white canvases. These concerns were prominent at the 1966 Venice Biennale, for which he designed the environment for his work, and at the 1968 Documenta, Kassel, West Germany. Fontana died on September 7, 1968, in Comabbio, Italy.

Another September has come and gone, and for the 3rd year in a row I’ve participated in the Swordtember drawing prompt! 30 days, 30 pixel art swords. This year I upgraded programs from the Piskel app I was using previously, and (through some trial and error) compiled an Aseprite copy, less out of feeling feature-limited and more out of wanting to learn the more powerful program. And it did come with a couple of tools that I was able to put to good use!
All in all, I’m once again very proud of my offerings, and I have a lot of fun being an artist for one month of the year. Hopefully you enjoy them too!
Sword descriptions and blurbs for each, as always, under the cut.
Crystal: An amethyst crystal blade with a hilt based on an open geode. It was tricky to get it to read with the proper depth and translucency, since I was just getting back into the swing of it and also getting used to a new program.
Candle: A hilt in the style of a bronze candelabra, with a tall, drippy, lit candle for a blade, and two smaller candles in the candelabra arms forming the crosstree. I really ended up liking the texture of the dripping candle.
Gears: A sleek, filigreed blade with two spiked gearwheels mounted at the base of the blade. The design language of this one borrowed pretty heavily from the artifice design of the Kaladesh world in MtG.
Elemental: A blade with air gusts wrapping around the edge, flame and water curling around the crossguard arms, and an earthy chunk for a pommel. Each section of the blade has the corresponding symbol for its element, and the center bears the sigil for quintessence or aether. Hey did you guys know, I really love alchemical symbols.
Edible: A long, rectangular blade shaped like a partly-eaten chocolate bar, with a banana and whipped cream (and a cherry on top) crossguard, and a waffle cone forming the grip. I was thinking about that one food-based level in Super Mario Galaxy when I made this one.
Liquid: A blade shaped like a decorative fountain, with the shape of the blade formed by water cascading from the spout at the tip to the basin at the hilt. Really proud of both the detail work on the fountain and also the low opacity making the whole blade look like water flowing over the fountain body.
Mirror: Two short swords, the exact same shape, one with a silver and gold coloring, one with a red and dark blue coloring. They are separated by a mirror splitting the canvas horizontally in two. The mirror reflects each blade as the tip of the blade seems to bury itself in the mirror.
Veined: A long, craggy sword meant to evoke stone, with veins of ore laced through it. A pickaxe forms the hilt. The (very silly) original concept for this sword was to have a blade shaped like a muscley arm flexing, mounted on a dumbbell hilt. I couldn’t get that to look good, so I’m happy with this alternative.
Floral: A helix-shaped blade made of two twisting intertwining vines, protruding from a large pink plant bulb. Another twisting, thick vine forms the grip, with a mouthlike root clamp as a pommel. This sword is pretty heavily based on the Terraria boss Plantera. (As a side note I feel like this theme is the most common recurring prompt... I must have done like 5 plant/flower-based swords in all these challenges.)
Snake: A winding blade made to look like a diamondback rattlesnake. The triangular head forms the guard, with the snake’s forked tongue wrapping around the grip. I like to represent local flora/fauna when I can, so the choice of the western diamondback felt like a good way to do that.
Neon: A tall blade meant to evoke the classic vertical neon sign seen outside an establishment in the city. The text reads, “Joe’s.” I also made an animated version of this for the neon flicker effect, not pictured here. Sadly I didn’t get to do as many animated blades as I did last year, so that’s something I want to improve.
Woven: A blade resembling a hanging tapestry, with a wooden frame at the top and for the hilt. The tapestry’s design is the Master Sword, fairies surrounding it, and the Silent Princess flower below it. I will always find an excuse to put my favorite sword into these challenges, even if it takes a little swordception to do.
Hidden: A black sword cane with the head carved in the shape of a goat. The head is partly lifted, revealing a couple of inches of the blade inside. The symbol for Capricorn is in the base of the cane. This is one of a series of zodiac weapons I made in high school- I still like to revisit some of those old designs, since I drew a *lot* of swords in high school and college.
Witch: A small blade designed after the movie Kiki’s Delivery Service. The body of the blade is a broomstick, the crosspiece is Kiki’s bow, and the center has a small image of Kiki and Jiji designed after the sign in the movie. Kiki’s radio is wrapped around the blade close to the hilt. I just had fun with this one.
Dual-Purpose: A short sword with the USB trident symbol on the blade, and a short wire and USB dongle extending from the hilt. Also a very silly sword. Possible suggested applications of the USB functionality include uploading combat data, installing cybersecurity, or loading up with battle tunes.
Shell: A tall, spiraling blade designed after an auger seashell.
Smoke: A wispy, undefined blade with the body made up of roughly sword-shaped smoke. The smoke seems to emit from a glass phial with more smoke inside, that forms the hilt. One cool new tool I got familiar with in Aseprite was the blur and diffusion tools.
Glass: A long blade composed of several panels of various brightly colored stained glass, not forming an image but more a geometric pattern. Technically a rework of an idea from a previous sword, but this blade definitely feels like its own take on the stained glass idea. I’m quite proud of the pommel.
Family Heirloom: A broad blade with a family tree design winding its way towards the carved wood hilt. Various portraits are attached to the tree, two portraits are on either end of the crosstree arms, and a mirror forms the centerpiece. Meant to be a weapon passed down generations, the tree design grows to add the portrait of each successive wielder. The mirror symbolizes the current bearer.
Leaf: A longsword surrounded by autumn leaves. A swirl of seasonal energy emanates from a gem in the crosspiece and wraps around the blade. The grip is made of twisting wooden roots. This sword is actually based on the “Forest” blade from last year’s Swordtember, given an overhaul and an autumn flair.
Lantern: A hollow stone lantern form the hilt. Inside is a ghostly will-o-wisp, whose ghostly green energy emits from both sides of the lantern to form a two-pronged blade.
Horn: A rapier with the spiral pattern of a unicorn horn forming the blade, and a small unicorn head figure forming the hilt.
Chain: A blade made of red and blue intertwining in a helix, the space between linked with colored pairs. A purple gem sits in the center of the hilt, and the base of the grip is the helix beginning to separate. This is a rework of a blade themed after the pokemon Deoxys, borrowing its coloration and its connection to DNA chains.
Coral: A pitted, encrusted blade covered in marks and accretions. Several bright orange bunches of tube coral extrude from the blade. The idea with this one was a sword left underwater to be overgrown by coral, algae, and other sea life.
Spider: A menacing blade with a hooked tip and eight sawteeth down the inner edge. Two spider decals decorate the blade, and the crosspiece is shaped like a web. The pommel has the black widow hourglass on it. This is also from the collection of zodiac blades, which I'm remembering now was part of a friend's fan TWEWY setting which used the western zodiac. Been a while since I thought about it...
Wooden: A worked wooden blade with green ornamentations on the blade, and a crosspiece carved in the shape of antlers. The goal with this one was to make a wooden sword that wasn't simple or basic. I took a few cues from the Forest Dweller weapon set in BotW.
Pattern: A brightly colored blade resembling moth wings. Several eyespot patterns are found on the body of the sword. A small set of moth antennae extend from the pommel.
Asymmetric: An ancient Egyptian khopesh, a curved sword in the shape of a crescent. This one goes out to some of the truly wild sword designs found in history.
Crown: A recreation of the Kingdom Key D, King Mickey's keyblade from Kingdom Hearts. Did it blow anyone else's young mind when they noticed that the kingdom key's teeth have the shape of a crown, and Sora's crown pendant fits exactly? That's such a cool detail to me.
Skull: A blade that protrudes from the mouth of a skull of some large draconic creature. I liked working on the shape of the skull on this one. I also found this being the final prompt an appropriate way to transition towards the month of spooks. (A friend told me this could be a straight up Yugioh card, so that's cool.)

Swordtember : 24 : Neon
Lights flickered along the lonely street. One, then the next, blinking out and in. It was as if a shadow was passing over the city, something huge in the water above, blocking out the light. It moved slow, drawing ever nearer to its prey.
A young man, Bruce, walked along with his hands in the pockets of his hoodie. His eyes flitted about with a certain nervous energy, as if he was expecting something. He wandered aimlessly forward, only occasionally turning at seemingly random intersections.
He was alone in the night. Alone, except for the thing that followed close behind.
Its presence was felt before it was seen. A dull pressure, as if the air itself shrank away from the thing in the night, desperately trying to push its way through everything around.
A streetlamp popped. Shop windows rattled. A car gave a warning beep.
Even without touching the ground, the creature's weight had an immense effect upon its surroundings as it phased into reality. It slowly crossed the veil, the world parting around it like water running down glass. Space warped as it pushed itself through, its form taking shape. Taking color. Taking space.
The big black canvas of its body loomed behind Bruce. It was thin, but it was wide. The thing's glowing yellow eyes pierced the gloom of the night, only scarcely visible upon its relatively small head.
Bruce stopped in his tracks. He turned, and he stared the creature down.
"Right," he said, "Whatever you are. Manta-looking thing. I'm only gonna say this once. Get going before I make you get."
The manta did not reply, and Bruce sighed, not knowing if it even could.
"Figures." Bruce let out an annoyed groan. "Don't know why I ever bother. I mean, I'm supposed to, but-"
The manta plunged forward. Its voluminous body filled the street, threatening to swallow everything whole. It wrapped itself around everything and pulled inward. Streetlights were wrenched from the ground, cars were batted around like toys.
Bruce was expecting something like this. He leaped backward, somersaulting through the air to avoid the swipes of the manta's body. Twisting himself around, he hit the ground running in the opposite direction, booking it down the street.
The manta didn't seem to notice, distracted with the effort of crushing the various objects it had caught within its net.
Crossing the street, Bruce practically threw himself against the window of a little coffee shop. He slapped one hand against the glass over the dimmed open sign and waited there for a moment.
A heap of twisted metal crashed into the shopfront adjacent to the cafe. The manta had evidently realized its prey had escaped.
"Come on, come on," Bruce said, pouring his will through the glass. The neon sign slowly flickered to life, glowing a dim red and blue in the dark of the night. Bruce pushed his hand through the glass, into some other space, and he grabbed hold.
Light took shape in his hand. Solidified. Became what he needed.
Bruce pulled hard. Like the sword from the stone, he pulled free a blade of glowing neon. It hummed audibly, as if in anticipation.
"Right," Bruce said, turning to face the manta. "Time to make you get."

Art Asks
🐷 & 🍌
Thank you for the asks :)
🐷 Which part (of the creating process) do you enjoy the most? Once the initial sketch has been done, references gathered and a general idea of colour and lighting established, and I can put on some music or a fave youtube essay (I have a playlist of ones I've watched a bunch of times!), get cosy with a hot chocolate and just draw and vibe for hours. It tickles that itch of wanting to achieve something, kills boredom and the time flies by. Bliss. For my comics/more illustratory stuff specifically, I really enjoy the line art stage, it looks so satisfying turning a sketch into a lined piece.
🍌lots and lots of layers and overlay effects, or minimal layering? This depends on the piece/style. Lately i've been doing oil effect pieces. I set those up like this:
Tumblr media
Layer 1- oil painted board photograph Layer 2- Background colours Layer 3- the painting itself (will get merged with 2 towards the end to then clean up/blend out edges) Layer 4- the sketch, set to overlay and removed once the painting is done Layer 5- another oil effect board set to overlay Layer 6 - A canvas texture photograph set to multiply I may add layers above the painting if i'm trying something out that i'm not sure about and then merge down once i'm happy with them. I like to keep the background separate in case I later decide to change it up. While it's best to have the full colour scheme in mind from the start, sometimes you just gotta change things up so keeping them separate keeps that option open/easier.
For other pieces i'll use a fair number of layers as needed. My most used effect would be multiply, for shading, usually using an amaranth colour on the more illustratory pieces, here's a sneak peak of my two year drawversary piece i'll post in May and the final layers (there were many more while it was a WIP this is the final merged version):
Tumblr media
Sometimes I'll add a 'filter' style effect at the end by doing a layer of solid bright to neon colour, often orange or pink, then set to colour burn and turn the opacity down to 5-10%, a nice (cough and lazy cough lol) way to harmonise colours quickly if you are going for a strong colour theme.

[RIGHT IMAGE ID: a rectangular image with bright neon effects all around the canvas. the neon effects are lighter than in the previous image. the same character is in the middle, with dark hair, cut in straight bangs. one of their eyes is closed, but the other looks directly at the viewer. they are dragging their hand down their face, with a yellow smear following. they are glitched so it appears like there are two of them on the screen. they are smiling slightly. the text on the bottom of the image reads as such: "But love still penetrates; It's on our lips, it shows, because of you." Hello bread I like your art
What's your favorite thing you've drawn (recently or ever)?
thank you! I do not think I have the ability to give one answer to this question, so I'll dump a fistful or two of candidates here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the first depictions of Lynn and Dex are up there. this is just how they look in my head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm still trying different ways to make backgrounds and landscapes but I think they usually look at least somewhat visually appealing
Tumblr media
this concept sketch of. a secret fanfiction thing. hard to explain it but I think it looks hilarious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the scribbles I often made while playing D&D, particularly when I had to play over the internet
Tumblr media
this old reference for my even older oc, mainly for the neon sign to the right.
Tumblr media
this old naptha. I'm honestly not sure how I managed to draw a human-shaped person this well considering how long ago this is from.
Tumblr media
doods.kra! I decided to try and put a whole bunch of scribbles on one canvas and just make it bigger whenever I ran out of space. started at 1024x1024 and is now 4096x4096. here are some highlights
Tumblr media
(weird animal I effectively saw in an ink blot, character of someone else in my dnd group, and his lil' feller)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Ed)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(re-enactment apple cider idiocy, lid was not on the first time)
Tumblr media
moving on, I really like this depiction of Mattie from Intermortal. she looks how I'd expect someone in her circumstances to look and I like the lighting.
Tumblr media
Slogchamp, hypothetical star of a One Shot-like game idea I had
oh goodness this is getting long. I'll try and finish up.
Tumblr media
this dog, that dog, those cats, edgy pose,
Tumblr media
the M.M.S. of course,
Tumblr media
this celebratory depiction signed by an unknown charlatan holds importance to me,
Tumblr media
and finally, this is what I consider my first Really Good drawing, so it gets a place here.
thank you for withstanding all this and asking in the first place! If I really had to pick one, I'd probably just point to the doods.kra doodle board, but I think the rest are probably worth mentioning, and I also want to share these images anyway.
