Ok so tomorrow is the 11th day of Ray route but emmmm;; to be honest I found it's quite cliche to wrap up everything, seems a bit rushed and Saeran talked so much about MC than his own brother that got kidnapped by the one who made their life hell like okayyy?????? It's feel so different than in 707 route, like Saeyoung still put his brother above everything despite him with MC and we can feel the tension from the weight of situation but Ray route is like????? He's too easy, like "Oh! you came to my life for 10 days and you're already my angel that comes to save me from all this despair that I have since childhood uwu" kind of thing. ☺️❤️

Like, okay????? I get that 10 days aren't enough to lengthen the story plot but I'm disappointed that Ray route ended like this? It's more about MC than their past. Maybe it's just my personal interest but really, Saeran in this is ehhh ;;;;

That's rough, buddy. I recommend the following otomes to help get over him: - Our Life: Beginning and Always: THE definitive cozy vibes otome. The base game is free, with multiple DLCs if you want more content. - Blooming Panic: Discord-based otome. Short and sweet. Turned me into a simp for a discord mod in what is possibly my worst moment yet. Also free. - Aloners: contains only one LI that reacts to your choices as a main character. The setting is bleak and at times a little hopeless, but the writing and story is top notch. There's a free version of it, but there's also a redux version if you've got cash to burn. - A Cinderella Story: One of the original Western indie otomes, I believe. I remember this for the excellent character development for the main character and excellent fairy tale-inspired plot. - Nightshade: One of the most gorgeous otomes I've ever laid eyes on. One of the saddest, too. Tragic story. Play this only if you want to replace your dead ex with another dead ex. Possibly die yourself in multiple horrible ways. You're welcome. - Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds: The granddaddy of otomes. I assure you, you will have forgotten all about John Soap McTavish by the time you finish this game and its sequel because that's probably a decade from now. Slow burn, plot-heavy. Came for the hot samurai men, stayed for the history lesson. - Mystic Messenger: only play this if you are willing to let it consume your life. These fictional boys are DEMANDING. Found in the app store of your choosing. - ITYH: A Horror Otome: Absolutely unhinged. This otome contains cannibalism, kidnapping, and sexual trauma. Beautiful in the way literature of gothic tragedies is beautiful. Definitely not for everyone. Definitely one of my favorites. Please exercise caution if you wish to play this game and enjoy the ride if you do.

It's not that big of a deal, but the way Jumin quickly jumps to action could have fooled you into thinking you were in mortal danger if you didn't know better. The second he heard you hiss under your breath, knife falling onto the cutting board with a little clanking sound, he was at your side.

"Are you alright?" He questions, a worried edge permeating every syllable.

"Yeah, I'm fine," you assure him quickly, "—it's just a cut. I was being careless."

"It's bleeding," he notes, pulling you away from the counter and over to the sink.

He turns the faucet, pauses as he waits for the water to turn lukewarm, and examines your slit finger in the process. It's just as you'd said: a small cut resulting from a moment's carelessness. But, this is one of the ways Jumin shows love. Little things can turn into monumental things when they impact you, and he wants nothing more than to be your knight in shining armor. Even if you don't need one, he likes to think that maybe one day, he'll have the opportunity to save you the way you saved him. So, when it comes to tiny things like this, you don't complain when Jumin takes a strong initiative.

He tests the water himself first, making sure it's not hot enough to scald you before gently pulling your hand forward. The few droplets of blood rush off your finger as the water cascades over, cleaning the wound out.

"It's really not a big deal," you say softly, knowing that he's worried and has worked himself up, —even over something as miniscule as this.

And he knows you're right. Your cut is barely worse than the papercuts he gets on a semi-regular basis whilst handling paperwork at the office, and he's known to deal with those by working one handed while he sucks the cut until the blood stops. But when it comes to you, he fears even the smallest of things could harm you in unimaginable ways, and Jumin's biggest fear is letting you get hurt and being unable to do anything about it. You're the strongest person he knows, but he'd go to the ends of the Earth just to keep you from ever dealing with pain again.

"We have a first aid kit in the bathroom," he mumbles as he turns the water off, acknowledging your comment with a pleading glance, —one that silently begs for your cooperation.

You comply.

He offers you his hand to squeeze when he applies some disinfectant spray. You apply a little pressure when he does, but it's more for Jumin than it is for you, and you suspect that he knows as much but chooses to say nothing of it.

The bandage he applies has little cat paw prints on it, and you stifle a giggle as he wraps it carefully around your finger. It's just so cute that you can't help yourself.

"Is that comfortable enough?" He inquires, dark eyes meeting yours, breaking his intense concentration.

You bend your finger a bit and offer him a delicate smile.

"It's fine," you assure him, "—thank you."

Jumin sighs a little, relief lapping at the shores of his heart.

"Go sit for a while and I'll finish dinner. Then we can eat together," he requests.

As long as you get something to eat, you don't really care who cooks it, so you nod your head. Jumin smiles gently and brushes his lips past yours, soft and sweet.

𖦹. ━ SAERAN !!

When Saeran hears you curse, he looks your way; expression as blank as usual, but eyes swimming with worry.

"Hey," he says from behind you in order to get your attention, "what happened?"

"Nothing," you lie, pushing the grater away from you, "everything's fine."

He stands, knowing you well enough to understand that you were lying to avoid the embarrassment of admitting you'd gone and hurt yourself.

"Everything's not fine," he says, bluntly so, reaching around you to take your wrist into his grip.

For someone who can be so incredibly intimidating, Saeran is almost startlingly gentle. At least, he is when it comes to you. His lithe fingers wrap around your wrist, the warmth of his palm pressed flat to your skin. You could almost forget the pain of the small nick on your finger with his touch soothing you down like this.

"Let me see," he demands, —not aggressively, but as if asking for permission.

You comply, and he eyes the little cut along the tip of your finger.

"You cut yourself with the grater?" He asks, to which your eyes avert away from his face.

"It was an accident," you say, perhaps a bit defensively.

Saeran sighs.

"How many times have I told you to be careful when you use that thing?" He asks, but doesn't expect a genuine answer.

He doesn't get one.

"You need to pay better attention," Saeran continues, pulling your finger close to his lips. "I don't like it when you go and get yourself hurt."

With nothing more to say, he opens his mouth and presses the tip of your finger to his tongue. Your eyes widen, but you don't make any attempt to pull away from him. His tongue slides gently over the tiny wound, lapping at the blood. It's a rather crude method of solving the issue, but you can't bring yourself to mind. If it were anyone else, you'd likely think it was gross and pull your hand away at the speed of light, —but it's not anyone else. It's Saeran, and if anything, this is oddly attractive to you.

"There," he mumbles, tongue raking along his bottom lip swiftly, "better?"

It wasn't much of an issue in the first place, but you nod in reply, a little embarrassed by his antics.

"Yeah. Thanks," you answer in a voice just above a whisper.

He doesn't mind the taste of your blood, but even he knows it would be weird to say something like that, so he keeps the thought to himself.

"Go sit down and try not to get yourself cut again," he says, "I'll finish dinner."

His words might be a little harsh, but the soft touch that lingers on your wrist for a few moments longer is anything but.

𖦹. ━ YOOSUNG !!

Yoosung's heart seizes in his chest when he hears you yelp from the kitchen in his small apartment. He doesn't even bother to pause his game before rushing your way. His chest caves a bit when he sees you holding your hand, eyes and nose scrunched up in pain.

"Y/n! What happened?" He asks, reaching out to clutch comfortingly at your shoulder, albeit a bit awkwardly.

"It's okay," you insist, still reeling a bit from the shock, "I burnt my hand a little, that's all."

In truth, it surprised you more than it actually hurt you. Still, you can't deny that the side of your hand is stinging, and though you haven't looked, you have a feeling that your skin might well be a bit discolored now.

Yoosung scrambles.

"Here, —put your hand under some cool water for a minute or two," he says, turning the faucet knobs for you.

He's sure to test the temperature of the water for you before allowing you to place your hand under the light stream. You flinch a little at the initial contact, still sensitive in the freshly burned area. Yoosung turns the burner of the stovetop off, hunger all but forgotten in the wake of your admittedly minor injury. Right now, he couldn't care less about his own needs. Even if everything is fine, —he can't help but be worried.

"How bad does it hurt?" He inquires.

"Not bad," you reply, hoping to reassure him. "It only stings a little now, and it should go away soon. Nothing to worry about."

Too late. When it comes to you, the smallest things can work Yoosung up. He can't help himself. If there's anyone in this life he hates to see in pain, no matter the severity of it, it's you.

"We should have some antibiotic cream somewhere," he notes, "just wait here for a minute, I'll be right back."

He fulfills that promise, returning quickly with a small, white tube of ointment and a fluffy bath towel.

"Let me know if anything hurts," he says, taking your hand softly into his grip.

Yoosung gently dabs the lingering water droplets away from the burnt area with the towel before taking a generous amount of the antibiotic cream onto one of his long, lithe fingers. He spreads it evenly with feather-like touches, keeping the agitation to a bare minimum. You can't help but smile at how incredibly gentle he is.

"Okay," he smiles over at you softly, "that should do it. Does it feel any better?"

"My hand feels fine," you answer, leaning over to press a kiss to the apple of his cheek. "Thank you."

He blushes, eyes lighting up in the wake of your lips.

"I'll make dinner," Yoosung tells you, "—I hope you don't mind ramen. . ."

I have another uhh idea? For self-aware au!

SO..

Whenever I play Genshin I would also always be playing Enstars, TWST, and Mystic Messenger(If there’s a new Chatroom open) at the same time while blasting some Paralive or Enstars songs in the background

How would the characters in those games react to me playing multiple games at once?

And Y’know how if you stay still for a bit or just don’t do anything the character will say their idle animation lines, they’ll ask you if you’re still there/are you busy?/are you sleepy? Or whatever

Since I’m playing it all at once with usually a really high volume there’s no doubt they’ll be able to hear it

Soo..How will they react to hearing another persons voice that doesn’t seem to be a family member? Will they overthink things like “Is that their partner?!?”, “Who is that..!? Are they trying to steal them away from me?!”, and for guys like maybe Tori “hmph! Shut up whoever you are. Darling(Slave 2) obviously doesn’t want to talk to you, they want to talk to me!”

And since I mentioned I would be blasting Paralive songs in the background..How will the Enstars characters react? Will they be jealous, mad, sad, upset that the player is listening to someone else’s songs that aren’t theirs?

How will they react to the player listening to their songs on blast? Will they feel proud, happy, crying tears of joy, grateful(that you notice their hard work and is willing to listen to it), going full on tsundere or something

Ooh and I also always say out loud things like “EEEK EHEKWBS KANATA AND NAYUTA LOOKS SO GOOD AND THEIR VOICES UEKWBSJ MARRY ME!!” How would they react to that? Since I also always say these things to them whenever I see them on screen or they talk

Zen doesn't know what that is, honestly, so you're going to have to explain it to him

If you started dating when you were still presenting as female- well

He is really confused about it, wonders what will happen with your relationship, but he is quick to decide he doesn't want to lose you just because you're no longer presenting female

I can totes imagine him realizing he's bi once he thinks about you being a guy, and realizing that really relieved the both of you, cuz a reason why you didn't tell him right away was because you were afraid he would break up with you, right? And he's just happy he still loves you the same as ever

Like- he loves you so much, that's why he doesn't want to stop loving you, you get me?

But really, that one was actually obvious; he made it very clear in the very beginning that he loves you unconditionally, he loves you for you! So it really was just the attraction to your body that could've changed, but nope

It all takes a few minutes to click, and a few hours of talking for him to confidentally being able to say he is in love with another guy. That being because of his initial confusion and him feeling unsure

He loves seeing you relax more, slowly seeing you more happy and confident of yourself as time moves on

Caution though: he will slip up every now and then with nicknames. He is so used calling you female terms, please forgive him

(same anon who almost died a few times lol) hm. now I'm imagining showing ray my old mediport (it's basically a central line I had in my chest while I was on chemo as an easier/faster way to draw blood) without knowing just how anxious he gets. When I finished chemo I asked if I could keep it so it sits in a specimen cup on my desk and i think it's cool and like to show it to people. tho i wonder if maybe ray would find it interesting? on one hand it would a physical reminder of what I went through, but on the other hand it helped keep me alive and prevented me from experiencing more pain.

Ray hasn't been subjected to the outside world. When he was a kid, if he received any medication, it was only because his twin managed to steal something. Not that either of them are proud of that fact, but if he was sick... they had to do something to keep it from getting worse. It's not like their mother was going to get help. A cough can lead to a lot worse if it's not taken care of. He has no experience with anything medical apart from cough syrup.

But! He'd want to learn what to do for you if you still have anything that needs extra care to this day. Even if you don't, he knows that there's always a chance that something might happen again, and anything he can do to avoid your suffering, he'll do. That means he has a lot of amount of education to do in his spare time. He'd hate to ask you something and leave you struggling with memories that you might not want to remember...

So, he makes sure that everything he learns comes from more than just you. He's proactive with his paranoia and fears. Even if you're in remission and healthy today, he can't help but feel very fearful for the worst-case scenario. That's just a part of how he feels. He's always afraid of something horrible happening to you, even if there's not any reason to be afraid.

I think Ray would be torn when you show him the remnant of your life with cancer. The outside world is supposed to be horrible and yet... there are doctors and people who worked to save your life out there. Sure, people would want to save you... you're special, but what does it mean when he's brought you to Mint Eye to protect you?

Was it just a lucky fluke that people helped you? Or, would they help you again if something went wrong, God forbid, again? His fear is just a part of him that can't disappear at the flip of a hat. It happens and he struggles with it every day. He loves you, he wants you to be safe and happy, so knowing that you've been hurt... and he couldn't stop it is hard for him. Not that he wants to make this about him. Your pain is not about him. He won't overshadow that.

He just wishes... that he could've been there for you before he knew you this way. Even if he couldn't have done anything... he knows that he could've held you when you needed it. So, it's complicated for Ray because he wishes he can take away all memories of your pain, but it isn't something he can actually do. Your port might be something he can't disregard when he slowly learns that Mint Eye isn't healthy for him... like... a statement about the world he can't ignore.

It didn't abandon you... even though he felt like the world wasn't a good place for you. So, why shouldn't he believe you when you tell him he might belong outside, too?

The long of the short of it... Ray doesn't want you to suffer, so while it's hard for him to see a reminder that you've been hurt, it's nice to know that something kept you from suffering. He hopes that he can be that person for you today... can he? Can he protect you? Will you let him?

i'd like to know more about what you mentioned in the tags then, about taking inspiration from outside media! i remember when i first played the demo it hit just right cause i'd just watched the boys and i was hungry for more hero cynicism lol

Aw hell yeah!!

Okay so actually - I take very little inspiration from modern hero media, if any. I did grow up watching Justice League (2001-2004), Static Shock, and Batman the Animated Series and take some tonal inspiration from my memories of them (in which heroes generally try their best and it isn't always enough, villains tend to have sympathetic motives, also Mr Freeze is there and he's my big favorite), but that's about it.

When I started taking an interest in game design, I took deep inspiration from games with stories and mechanics that really resonated with me:

Mystic Messenger: I took heavy inspiration from how the love interests talk to each other, and how they all participate in every route. And the banter!! This game genuinely made me feel a personal connection to all its characters, and a lot of the player's dialogue choices were pretty damn funny for an otome game. (I have since learned that many, many indie otome games are similarly charming and I wrote a whole big list of recommendations, but didn't know they existed back in 2016-or-so.)

Undertale: Its sense of humor and meta commentary blew my mind. You could just do so much and have the game remember and react to your actions/choices, such as taking too much candy and making the whole bowl spill to the floor, or having the Mad Dummy rant about how you treated the dummy from the beginning of the game. Undertale is probably responsible for my deep interest in variable-tracking, and having characters respond to different things. (Dammit, Undertale, it's been so much work... but it's worth it I guess.....)

Disco Elysium: I played this a short while after MM and UT, and it just solidified my idea of what "my favorite game" would look like. Because I'm trying to make Herotome into my favorite game, that's my secret cap, etc etc. Anyway... Disco Elysium is fucking crazy. It's full of heart and camaraderie and also you can loudly beg for money and punch a literal child in the face and sing karaoke really badly and joking that if you find three racists you will be granted three wishes like??? It's unhinged. I haven't even mentioned the stellar atmosphere, plot, and how you have a bunch of voices in your head suggesting various courses of action and how you play as a recovering addict and you can go right back into your addiction with smoking alcohol and drugs... Describing it like this, it feels like an impossible game, that there's no way a game like this exists, but goddamn it do. And I take inspiration from a small.. SMALL aspect of it, because if I tried to fully emulate Disco Elysium I would probably die. It's just so much. And it's beautiful. Anyway DE inspired me to be more unhinged.

Dragon Age Origins: I'm listing this last because I actually played it well, well before I started game development, but it was such an impactful game for me that I'd never forgotten its scenes, characters, and how it made me feel. The CHARACTER BANTER... The sheer wealth of choices, and the emotions involved!!! There was such a general sense of world building and gravitas and then you find this mystical holy urn that's been important to a major religion and one of the characters quips "Nice vase. I should get one for my house." like??? Gah. I guess it inspired me not to take my own game too seriously, but the characters are also very,veryvery charming while also being quite diverse - everyone has a unique sense of humor and a unique background. The player can ALSO have a unique sense of humor and a unique background, which is super cool. I am absolutely not doing separate Origins for Herotome because that's way too much work-- but the diversity of the love interests did inspire me a great deal. Oh-- and the APPROVAL SYSTEM. I loved how you could get characters in the negative and have really, really interesting dialogue from antagonistic interactions, so DA:O really taught me early on that I didn't have to shy away from such things.

Perhaps most importantly: I like these games a whole lot, they are probably my favorite games. I want to like Herotome in the same way, or at least a very similar way.

A quote I try to think about a lot is "I'm surprised at the success of the show, I'm... I'm not surprised by people liking it that watch it, because... even though that makes me sound like a dick, like, that [sounds like] I knew people would like it, that's not quite what I mean-- I just mean, when you write something, you have to... if it's gonna be good, you have to be, like, its first fan, you have to be like... I don't care if I'm the only person who ever watches this, I love this. So when a second person says 'this is awesome!' You're like, stoked, but you're not shocked[...]"

... Okay I don't think about that entire stuttering quote (it's from Dan Harmon, regardless of how one might feel about him as a person he is an undeniably successful writer); but I do try to internalize "I don't care if I'm the only person who likes this" as often as I can.

I also make an effort to trust in the universe and that Herotome will reach "its people" and resonate with them in the same way my favorite games resonated with me...

... Anyway.

Outside of game design, I also try to pick out enjoyable aspects from everything I watch and read. If a book has a particularly well-written scene, I'll jot down some notes about why I liked it even if I didn't enjoy the book overall. Same with VNs and other games. While watching movies/shows I'll try to remember how they make me feel, and remember scenes that are particularly powerful and why they affected me. Yeah it's a lot of English homework, but it's how I work and indirectly feed Herotome and keep it alive in my day-to-day. I even have a playlist of random youtube videos I might reference while working on the game. Oh, and video essays -- I watch video essays religiously and make mental notes... let's plays, too, are a great way to experience how a game is designed and saving some time--

Uh, point being, you don't have to go hardcore categorizing and note-taking like I do. I just truly believe that every piece of media has something to share that can be molded and used to your own devices... even if it's "what not to do," in situations where I really, really don't like something. I'll just make a mental note to do the opposite thing. (eg, when Mystic Messenger let you choose your PFP and then randomly showed you the default MC kissing the love interest - so much whiplash, so awful, still one of my favorite games but whyyyyyy)

I actually did a meme about characters-who-inspired-my-characters a while back too, so there's that... same logic. Many many games and stories and characters inspired me, very few of them directly concern superheroes.

it is so clear to me that some people in the mystic messenger fandom do not understand how abuse victims react to being abused. did ygys serious expect v to just break away from rika and tell everyone what was going on...OF COURSE HE DIDN'T? even in HIS OWN ROUTE he's still finding ways to justify what rika did to him because "she's not that bad." like ya okay v was an enabler and used her in order to process the trauma of losing his mother (and i'm not saying he was right for that or that what he did was okay because he's a victim) but ygys cannot SIT HERE and act like v was unreasonable for not telling the rfa everything.

Hi, I'm the anon who asked about Jumin. Thank you, I was thinking that if it came to the worst that he might be tempted to push MC away but your answer makes a lot more sense. I think Jumin would be the type of person to have precautionary plans in preparation for the worst happening. I have another question if you don't mind answering.

I've seen quite a few cheating fics/love triangle fics in the Mystic Messenger fandom. When it comes to canon I don't see any of the RFA members cheating on MC, with Jumin being the least likely of them all. I don't see much of the reverse though. In the case of MC cheating, how do you think Jumin would react? Would he be the type to blame himself for being away from her too long and ask for forgiveness? Would he forgive her and then suggest getting couples therapy? Or would he be over and done with the relationship now that the trust is gone (I don't see that happening unless MC wants it but at the same time I'm not entirely sure considering his viewpoint on women before MC came into the picture)

Also, in the aftermath of what you think would be Jumin's reaction to MC's infidelity, how do you think he would react if in the future if MC kept repeating her unfaithfulness vs if the cheating was a one time thing (for example would he act as if it never happened in the first place?) Thanks!

His knee-jerk reaction would be "oh shit I'm repeating my father's cycle that I have worked so hard to avoid" or "am I dating my father???" and shut down instantly from years of trauma being flung to his face. Then he'd be sad and disappointed and angry. It had taken him so much to open up to MC and this was how they retaliated.

Loyalty is Jumin's Achilles heel and being cheated on would really put this to test.

He'd still try to understand though. I'm taking an example from V's betrayal (why does he have so many canon examples of being hurt...). Depending on the magnitude, he can either desperately reach out for answers or think of V somberly but resigned to the fact that they won't be friends again. And when Chairman Han betrays him by making him marry Sarah Choi, he's hurt but he takes the logical course to protect his relationship with MC and expose Sarah.

After all the betrayals he receives, there's no malice from his side—unless the people he cares about are hurt.

If V truly repented, I believe he'd be open to communicate with him again even if it'd take years. Jumin already has so few people in his life that he trusts, he doesn't want to lose any more. So, if the cheating a one time thing, he could see it as a problem to be solved, question where things went wrong, if it was his busy schedule, if he was too unemotional for MC, if he couldn't give them what they needed. Then he would strive to be better and propose couples' therapy as you said.

Forgiveness is a complex thing though. Can Jumin still trust someone who had stabbed right into his oldest childhood wound even if he wanted to? He could try, but what if MC's genuine effort to change wasn't enough? By cheating on him, they had planted a seed of doubt in his mind that also tapped into his insecurities that he's a monster unworthy of love, love doesn't exist, and everyone would eventually leave him like a mother. That fear, knowing that it was put by someone he loves the most—could he move past that? Should he?

The intention matters too. Jumin always wants to know the reason of an action that he's willing to look past V's mistakes because he does it for misguided love and then to protect the RFA. Chairman Han claims he does it for Jumin's happiness. Jumin could do mental gymnastics for that. But what's the benefit for him to be cheated on?

I think he would really try to reconnect with MC, but the betrayal would always be on the back of his mind, the knowledge that this person had the ability to use his most vulnerable parts against him. His trust was broken and their relationship wouldn't be the same again.

It's an entirely different thing if MC cheated on him repeatedly. Unlike V who would let it happen and use it to prove his love harder, Jumin has self-respect. He's principled, and it's also due to his hatred of the kind of women his father dates that he'd put his foot down. There are lines that he won't cross and tolerating repeated cheating is one of them.

Or Jumin could go the possessive way and cage MC so they wouldn't leave him and see that he was still worthy of their love. He would prove that to them.
