#misogyny in sports

I saved this as a draft for a long time but I want to share it now:
Boys and men in sports humiliate and injure to prevent girls and women from "encroaching" on what they consider their domain.
I've tried to talk about this many times in my life, and I always get the, "you just can't handle competition, you just expect me to go 'easy,' on you, you're just whiny/weak/holding up the game, this is unavoidable" when it was extremely obvious to me that I was being maliciously targeted by boys in an attempt to humiliate me, not in an attempt to simply win the game.
I recognize common threads between complex individual experiences:
-That the excess violence was CLEARLY not necessary to win;
-That it was done to me/other girls and not boys of a comparable size/skill (or, often, lesser size/skill);
-That it would occur when I was not that great of a threat i.e., they would spend the whole CASUAL game focused on shutting me down even though a lot else was going on; and then, when it was serious and we were actually trying, we would be having fun, getting rough, and then when I was up, the clear moment of a DECISION (with a petulant gleam in the eye) to make it unfun by SUDDENLY kicking/slapping/shoving me EXCESSIVELY hard (in a way I could not prepare for as it had no precedent in the game), PURPOSELY (this is not hard to tell) hurling the ball as hard as they can at my head while I'm not looking, etc. (and this was often on top of disproportionate, unsportsmanlike ridicule/taunting, i.e., condescending/disgusted/impatient that I never saw boys do to each other, instead of the fun shit-talking that I DO understand is part of sport);
-In situations where they would not allow me to play (i.e., ignore me completely as a teammate, refuse to assign me a role, etc.), because they ASSUMED I couldn't before I could prove otherwise, and then when I insist, instantly hurting me on purpose so I still never get a chance to show that I am skilled/competitive;
-And finally, it was ALWAYS in conjunction with specific comments about my femaleness, or comments about how I'm overconfident/need to be taught a lesson (and I would not include this point if I were bragging about my skills or messing up the game, I can tell if I'm holding up a competition).
In the end, all of this DOES result in my being less practiced and skilled, which serves as an ad hoc justification for it
In my memories, it seems like they are angry that a girl has the audacity to try, because nothing is more hammered into our heads than, "girls are weak and it's unthinkable to lose to them or take them seriously." Just because women can't compete with men at certain high level sports obviously does not mean that every individual girl will lose to every individual boy--- and it's so important for me to tell the difference that I am very thoughtful about whether it's "rowdy crazy high level man stuff--" I've never been interested in participating in that because it's scary and feels pointless.
As a lifelong athlete, I also have a lot of experience with accidentally getting hurt, with "intimidation" as a legitimate strategy, with making a beginner player quit because they obviously don't belong in your game; but these are all ways boys will try to pass off their cruelty.
It's also worth noting that boys my age were UNABLE to physically overpower me until about age 14, and all of this still happened (though it happened a lot more after that). I know that sometimes girls can hold up games and be overconfident and I can imagine that would be annoying. But sport is so important to me, and this pain is so deep, and I've been told these things all my life, so there's no way I would not be looking out for such nuance.
For most girls, it really only takes the one experience for them to never try again. For me, I BELIEVED people for a long time that I just needed to accept that things get competitive and rough-- and that's why I put myself through it over and over, only to find that something else, something far more sinister, was clearly at play.
In summary, men and boys are actively unsportsmanlike and unnecessarily cruel to girls and women who want to try to build skill and compete in various sports, and this is nothing to do with biological differences-- just misogyny.

no but when you really sit down and think about it, you have to be actually batshit insane, mentally unstable and depravingly dangerous to be a man who actually feels comfortable walking into women’s spaces and taking up space as if you were ever welcome there. like physically and confidently walking into women’s restrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms, sports teams, lesbian bars, gatherings etc and not feeling an ounce of shame or embarrassment or guilt, but instead entitlement. like as a woman, this absolutely fucking baffles me. even hypothetically putting myself in the shoes of the men who do this makes me feel physically sick. like i literally had a full body cringe thinking about it. as women we’re taught to feel things like shame and guilt and embarrassment for taking up space in almost any public setting, so I guess this feeling just comes naturally to me, but like. how can you feel justified and righteous enough to demand to be let into these spaces where you aren’t fucking wanted? where is the self awareness and empathy?
like they keep telling us that these TIMs who “just want to pee” are supposedly less of a threat to us than other men but, the kind of man who feels entitled enough to pull shit like this is probably even more insidiously dangerous to women than your average man. it’s just so sick and twisted. they’re narcissistic, egotistical, porn-sick depraved men who are fetishizing us enough to want to emulate us, invade and use our spaces, date us, piss and change beside us, all while demanding to call them one of us, or else be silenced and labeled a bigot. as if we’re indistinguishable from one another and should be respected and treated as such. it’s terrifying when you actually think about it.

men are so annoying my god. they have some of the dumbest takes on women's sports its obvious how disingenuous they are. "wnba players are jealous of caitlyn clark" and all most of them were saying was that caitlyn has a lot to learn playing professional basketball because it's a genuinely tough game and they hope she succeeds. men just keep belittling how skilled a lot of wnba players are and have been until caitlyn clark. they make fun of the wnba without watching it and then act like they know everything and declare caitlyn the sole saviour of the wnba like we haven't had legends like Elena Delle Donne or A'ja Wilson dominating the game. EMBARASSING!
ALSO they are RIGHT to complain about the racism since most brand deals and sponsorships for wnba players are white women. im happy that female athletes are winning and getting money, but it's telling when 70% of the basketball league are black women and most of the sponsorships are held by white women.
the way these goons take out the nuance and the humanity when discussing women's sports and reduce it to infantile squabbles of jealousy just shows how underdeveloped their brains are. like i know you men like inventing drama out of nowhere, but can you just stick to discussing stats? you're so cringe fr.
anyways!
I can't wait to see Stewie for New York Liberty on the court! Las Vegas Aces, Chicago Sky, Indiana Fever and the Washington Mystics are about to give us one hell of a season coming this May 14th. I'M SO HYPED!
Here are the women to watch out for (IMO because I'm biased and not in order of skill)
#1. Breanna Stewart (Stewie) (New York Liberty)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I pledge allegiance. Sincerely. She's so fun on court and weaves between players like that scene in Korra when she had to learn air-bending by evading spinning doors. I can't wait to see her play! (Next to her wife I'm her no# 1 fan don't joke around with me). Check some of her playing out here.
Also, here's a video of her eating spicy wings and barely surviving (while telling her story):
youtube
#2. Angel Reese (Chicago Sky)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After an amazing career in college basketball, Reese finally got drafted to the Chicago Sky WNBA team early this year. She's gotten a lot of hate for being justifiably boastful about her skills but she's remained a strong leader for her teammates and had a positive impact on girls and women everywhere. This is her first season in the WNBA and you can expect a show from her! Check some of her highlights here!
Here's a video explaining why she's so freaking iconic:
youtube
#3. Aaliyah Edwards (Washington Mystics)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the top picks of this year's WNBA draft, Aaliyah has been a star player for UCONN for years. She is one of the highest rated draft picks of the season! This will be her first season on the WNBA playing for the Washington Mystics. Her rebounds and offences are amazing to witness. Watch her highlights here.
#4. A'ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of WNBA's modern GOAT'S. A'ja IS INSANE. She intimidates everyone on court and then the court itself. I literally saw the basketball hoop shaking when she looked at it during one of her games! I swear. It peed itself. Her wingspan and strength make her so formidable like y'all just have to watch herrrr!! Oh yeah, and she won the championship and several MVP titles. Check her out here!
#5. Caitlyn Clark (Indiana Fever)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does she really need an introduction? Her career in college basketball has been spectacular and special for women's sports everywhere! She was breaking records in HIGH SCHOOL! This is going to be her first season in the WNBA and more eyes than ever will be on the game because of her! Check some of her highlights playing for Iowa here.
#6. Rickea Jackson (Los Angeles Sparks)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While playing small-forward on her college team, Rickea made a name for herself as one of the most aggressive offensive players in women's college basketball today! She's strong and fast and alert and is genuine fun to watch. You won't want to miss out on her debut into the WNBA for the LA Sparks! Watch her game highlights here.
#7. Kelsey Plum (Las Vegas Aces)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kesley Plum is just one of my favorite athletes of all time! She's so dedicated to her team and the people in her life and it shows. Her joy is so infectious! She is also an incredibly, impressively strong and SKILLED athlete! And she was a big reason why LVA won the season last year. (And hallelujah she's divorcing her dumbass husband rn! hopefully the dead weight makes her an even stronger player!). Watch some of her highlights here.
AND CHECK OUT THIS VIRAL VIDEO OF HER THROWING A T-SHIRT TO HER FATHER WHO IS FAR UP IN THE BLEACHERS!
youtube
#8. Sabrina Ionescu
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sabrina and Stewie are an unstoppable duo! Watching them play is electric for me! WHEW! Sabrina has made WNBA history with idek how many records! She is the top in the league in assists, triple-doubles, and steals. SHE'S INSANE!!! SHE'S FUCKING RABID!!!! See for yourself here!
Watch her break the all-time three point record like it's nothing here:
youtube
#9. Cameron Brink
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cameron Brink debuts in this season of the WNBA for the Sparks! Cameron has had an amazing college career, but is especially known for her strong defence (and being the god-sister of Stephen Curry). She's bound to have a promising season. Watch some of her highlights here.
The strongest teams (IMO) seem to the Aces, the Mystics, the Sparks and New York Liberty. But there are also strong players in teams like Indiana Fever, Dallas Wings and Minnesota Lynx.
If you don't know which team to support, you could just pick your favourite athlete and choose their team. Some people like underdog teams and some people like top dog teams. Based on last season, I'd consider Indiana Fever an underdog team and Las Vegas Aces the top dog team (they won last season). In terms of best teams? LVA players are SEAMLESS. They move like water and it's magical to watch. But so are the Liberties and the Mystics! I genuinely don't know who to pick between those three.
If any of you gyns watch WNBA, please tell me who you're supporting this season and why!
Anybody who wants to start the season with me in May 14th, comment or reblog and maybe we can organize a discord for it! I'd love to watch this with you guys! And I'm all up for team rivalries.

Men are convulsively obsessed with women's sports. They can't shut up and not hate on them if their lives depended on it. If I don't like someone else's hobby, I don't even think about it. Men are a hivemind outpouring rabid fixation on women's sports for one reason or another. The obsession is undeniable. The only question is why.
I say it's three reasons: 1) Sadism. They hate women and just want to hurt women when women enjoy anything. They hate women and don't want women to receive any recognition for anything. Maybe for doing things that serve men, but not much even then.
2) People enjoying women's sports threatens men's most valued possession: Violence. Brute strength in sports comes from the same biology that aids men in violence. If people are enjoying women's physical activites, it bothers men that they're not being excessively revered for brute strength they were born with that gives them control over the whole world. When it comes down to it, the only reason anyone is in charge of anything is because somewhere down the line there's the threat of violence. Men value this above all else. They want to be reaffirmed that they can hurt people and have power over women in every aspect of life.
3) Someone even enjoying women's sports makes men angry and jealous that men aren't being as praised for their brute strength, their only trait. Women's bodies are a marvel. Men are just brutes. If you say violence is wrong and you enjoy women's sports, men see their ability lose value. No one cares anymore about men's ability, it's not interesting, good, or impressive, and men see red in envy. They need their bodies to be better than the women they jealously hate, but now you don't even applaud their brute strength because you'd rather watch the women. You're not allowed to enjoy women's sports because you have to remember men can hurt you.
Also if you're a woman start supporting women's sports. ❤

(un)friendly reminder that susie wolff almost lost her entire career over a RUMOUR and christian horner gets to keep his job and his reputation despite there being pages and pages of evidence against him. not to mention half the grid playing sexual harassment off as “distraction” and “noises” and wishing they could focus on racing instead. from the bottom of my heart, fuck this sport. i hope it burns in hell

Russia has been accused of a “disgusting and pathetic” attempt to smear two of the US’s most successful sportswomen.
The Russian embassy in South Africa posted a picture of the figure skater Kamila Valieva on their social media account, a day after she was banned for four years for taking banned drugs, above pictures of the US gymnast Simone Biles and the tennis star Serena Williams.
“Do not confuse,” read the post. “Russian athletes, doping. US athletes, cereals.”

A sacred female communion taken away, one I didn’t realize until I was getting dressed in the pool locker room.
All the ladies there are silent. Eyes cast away, bodies hidden under towels or in dressing rooms, focus on task at hand… all done in an effort to avoid contact with other women.
It’s all dressed in shame when you really look at. Our bodies are taught to be sinful and hidden. Our voices taught to be led to gossip with just women around. Our focus on tasks rather than communication.
Be silent. Be hidden. Be of service.
What do men do in the locker room? They play fight with towels. Make jokes. Talk while they dress. Make noise. Walk around naked.
More importantly, they make plans. Gather with others to build and achieve. Schedule meetings.
And…. They make crude comments about women where no one can stop them. They connect with others on how to continue to be loud and lead while keeping the women in the other locker room quiet and ashamed.
This is not coincidence. This is planned. Men’s locker rooms are places to conquer and women’s are places to hide.
What the fuck?
Can you imagine what could happen for us if we healed our shame and gathered with other women to make friends, help others, build institutions, be prideful of our bodies, and return to our place of power in society? Can you imagine if we used these places to gather and grow rather than hide and wither away?
I wish we would do that. I would like to see women try it out.
And no, before anyone asks or comments, trans women are not allowed here. They make us hide more. Be quiet more. They need to kept far away from places where women are safe to be and build with other women. We are already at a severe deficiency of strength. We don’t need men colonizing our space to make it more weak.
We need to make our locker rooms places of pursuing power.
- Laura Rose

cheerleaders 🤝 equestrians (but specifically horse girls): your sport not being taken seriously by other people and being treated like a joke
#deity dialogue#when I was in middle school my computer teacher was also a football coach and would have ‘banter’ with the cheer coach (who was also an#assistant teacher for my math class btw she was so sweet she helped me a lot in class and also made me a bow which was stolen from me :( )#about how ‘football was a real sport and cheerleading wasn’t’ LIKE ARE YOU KIDDING ME#jsut because cheerleaders look cute and are peppy and more often than not girls and women you don’t take anything they do seriously#do you understand the strength and agility and flexibility needed to be a cheerleader do you see the shit they’re doing and you have the#gall not to respect what they do as a sport??? i wasn’t a cheerleader but a few of my friends were and I respect them so much that shit must#have taken so much of everything#obvs I’m not covering the full scale of what it takes to be a cheerleader cause again I wasn’t one but like I’m so pissed whenever people#have the audacity to act like it’s not a serious sport and I’m mad at the same for equestrians as well.#Also generally I hate people who think cheerleaders are inherently awful and bitches like y’all shouldn’t generalize just because some#people in a group are mean or popularly portrayed as mean doesn’t mean it’s true my friends from school were sweet to literally everyone so#can it. this isn’t me like dismissing anyone who’s been bullied by anyone but don’t like assume everyone is terrible thanks bye#it’s the misogyny and we all know it :/ it affects men in the sports as well because if you’re a male cheerleader you’re treated badly and#it’s the misogyny and we all know it

I think terfs are a really good example of the whole "far right people can believe seemingly contradictory things without a shred of self-awareness" given that they simultaneously believe women are inherently better than men AND that it's absolutely 100% impossible for a woman to beat a man in any competition at all bcs apparently we just naturally suck at everything.

Tree is still at the office, guys. I find it interesting that she's trying to preserve the image of busy at work (which girlie surely is) and busy with her girlfriends, as if to stop the mentality that everything she does revolves around a man... let's see if Tree can manage this witchcraft

All the men who see women's sports skyrocketing right now and they're like, "Yup, we told you, if it's good we'll watch, you get what you deserve, it was never about misogyny, that's just what happens when you're interesting to watch, no bias at all." Shut up LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I looked up women's basketball because I thought it would be cool to support. I don't love basketball yet, I like women's soccer, but why not, I'll be a new fan. So I looked it up and found an account with tens and tens of thousands of followers that posted highlights of women's basketball. I scrolled through the videos and I don't know anything about basketball but it didn't look very good. They kept showing the women missing shots or standing slowly for some reason. I was confused so I checked the comments. "Women can play basketball too! :P" "Haha women are so strong, you go guuurl." It was a satire account. For posting women making normal mistakes in the game and making fun of them for being women. To trick you into thinking they were supporting women at first to hurt you even more. I was just trying to get into basketball so maybe I could watch it and have fun.
Men are sadists. All they do is sit around all day and torture women. If you don't hate men at this point, do you even care about women. You can't not hate someone who craves to hurt people this much. I'm not surprised by it, I see this every single day as a women's soccer fan, and I see it in every aspect of life outside of sports. This is how men treat women. This is what men do. It's not dramatic to say this is psychotic evil. Men are trying to beat down and humiliate women because they are women. Men see women fighting for better treatment and respect in sports and rush to hurt her even more. Men want you to feel weak and be never-endingly reminded of how much men can hurt you, physically and mentally. Men hate you. Men won't let you enjoy a healthy, inspiring, innocent game because you are a woman. Men won't let you have happiness because they fucking hate you. This isn't shit to be taken lightly. Men are evil.
Don't let this discourage you from supporting women's sports. Men will still make fun of us and they'll do it even more the more popular women's sports become. But it'll be easier to ignore them when we have so much support from women, and it will feel a lot better.

Facing the threat of legal action from Canada Soccer, the Canadian women's team has agreed to return to training and play in the SheBelieves Cup.
The women's job action was short-lived - they only missed one day of training in Florida - but their labour dispute with their governing body is far from over. And the ill will has no doubt multiplied after emergency talks Saturday forced them back onto the pitch.
In a statement, the women said Canada Soccer told them it considered their job action was an unlawful strike and would trigger legal action.
“They told us that if we did not return to work - and did not commit today to playing in Thursday's game against the United States - they would not only take legal action to force us back to the pitch, but would consider taking steps to collect what could be millions of dollars in damages from our Players' Association and from each of the individual players currently in camp,” the women said.
“As individual players who have received no compensation yet for any of our work for Canada Soccer in 2022, we cannot afford the risks that personal action against us by Canada Soccer will create. Because of this, we have advised Canada Soccer that we will return to training (Sunday) and will play in the SheBelieves Cup as scheduled.” [...]
