HP Rec Fest - Day 15
Fest - @hprecfest Theme - The fic most recently bookmarked.
De Aegypto by Squibstress
Minerva McGonagall/Rolanda Hooch! 1300 words. Rated T.
This ship is one of my favs and I am also subscribed to the author so I was double hyped when I saw the notification. This fic was written for Ladies of HP fest . Minerva McGonagall POV.
The fic is about flying together. But under the surface it's also about flying.
The crucible in which Minerva has guarded her most essential self melts as they take to the sky. She knows it can be remade, that the power of her mind and magic can create anything she needs to stay safe, but what she needs is not to be safe. She needs the wind in her face and Rolanda’s breath hot against her neck and strong hands searing the flesh underneath the silk of Minerva’s bodice. Whatever else she needs, she needs this trembling moment of possibility.
I really love the present tense in this fic. It adds this extra layer of surprise/things happening and we are right there with her.
It has been an age since she’s felt this, or else it’s been an instant. It doesn’t matter, either way.
Also the imagery is 100% perfectly matching the vibe of the fic. Gosh a lot of characterization and atmosphere in just 1200 words.
She points the broom towards the stars, and her thoughts fall away with the earth. There is only this, her body cutting through time and space, slashing it, rending it, until it too disappears, leaving only Minerva, naked and helpless as a bairn left on a moor.
Love love love! Also Banter! I love the banter.
“Had enough?” Rolanda asks. “No,” Minerva says. “Not by half.”
My other recs for this fest

The idea of Professor McGonagall being bisexual but only discovering that later in life, after already living a life with a husband (temporarily), then widowed, and I just imagine her looking at Hooch or Pomfrey one day and just thinking, "Merlin, they're really pretty." And then just subconsciously accepting the fact that she likes women as well then completely forgetting about it. Until she finds Marlene crying in the Quidditch changing rooms after a match, and when Marlene tells her that she's going through a rough patch with Dorcas because they need to keep their relationship kinda hidden because of the few but loud bigots. Then, to comfort her, McGonagall literally just says, "You shouldn't hide each other from the world if I had a girlfriend I wouldn't." And Marlene is like, "Wtf you like women?" When McGonagall realises what she's said herself, she freezes for a second but then nods, realising that she's been bi this whole time, but that doesn't change anything, in the same way she thinks the fact that Marlene and Dorcas both being women shouldn't mean that they can't be open about their relationship.

Poppy/Minerva/Pomona/Rolanda
@sapphicmicrofics prompt: Beach, 50w
After a whole year with this idiot Lockhart they had earned their vacation in Spain. Lying on the beach their greying hair mingled, hands woven together. Poppy, Minerva, Pomona and Rolanda enjoyed not having to hide their relationships. Damn Albus and his "only single teachers" policy. They did not care.

Hooch and Minerva
Send me a ship and I give you my honest thoughts
Yes!
Okay so honestly I'm a sucker for Minerva/any woman, but her and Hooch are so good! I really like the idea of Rolanda being a few yars above her, and being someone she really looks up in Quidditch. They lose touch when Rolanda goes off to play professional quidditch and minerva is injured and can't play anymore and is kinda bitter about it so avoiding Rolanda for a while there tbh. Eventually Rolanda retires and starts working at Hogwarts, and they can actually rekindle their old feelings and be these old competitive women who get SO into the hogwarts quidditch matches. Bless them.

Madeline Greyhawk: The Girl Who Loved the Half-Blood Prince
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/DqrCLpY
by Calabyrinth
The Boy Who Lived is safe, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has been vanquished, the Order of the Phoenix disbanded, the Death Eaters went into hiding, or killed, or were escorted to Azkaban along with the Dementors who were reemployed; as well as Sirius Black the Mass Murderer in prison where he belongs. The trolls descended back to the forest to rarely be seen again and all the families that had been Imperioused have been released from their spells. Madeline Greyhawk had been waiting for this moment for years, since the moment her brother got his letter, and now was her moment. Walking to the platform where all the teachers sat, there lay a single stool where a dingy hat lay peaceful, grimacing at its new students. Madeline grew more nervous as she waited, frequently looking over to her big brother for reassurance. One by one, each student was called and after they were sent to their house's tables, until finally it was her turn. Looking at Gregory one last time for confidence she sat on the rickety wooden stool and smiled at him, he smiled back. As soon as the hat touched her head, she heard the voice call out, "HUFFLEPUFF!" and the smile that was wide across Gregory's face was gone.

A Modicum of Pain
Pairing: Rolanda Hooch/Minerva McGonagall
Prompt: “If I asked, you’d say no.” — “You don’t know that.”
WC: 546
Read on AO3 Here
Minerva gently stirred a cube of sugar into her evening tea. It had been a long day of lessons and overseeing children. Teaching was her calling, and she loved almost every moment of it, but some days really took it out of her and today had been mentally draining.
Being Deputy Headmistress and Head of Gryffindor House meant that she dealt with most of the discipline matters. A certain level of mischief from the students was expected--they were children after all--but the Weasley twins were giving the Marauders a run for their money.
She was contemplating finally opening the novel she had borrowed from Poppy but wasn’t quite sure that she was in the mood for a mystery. If she was going to read anything today, she wanted something light, something that didn’t require her to think. Maybe a romance, but she would never be caught dead with one of those.
It wasn’t that she didn’t believe in romance, she had fallen in love three times in her long life. Twice it had actually worked out. But none of those times had been anything like a romance novel. Those books were nothing short of fairy tales. Idealizations of what love could be. Love was never easy and often brought along with it a modicum of pain. At least, that is what she had told herself for so many years.
With Rolanda, it was different. Their relationship wasn’t easy, per se, but they communicated well. They worked through issues quickly, and really listened to what the other had to say. Their love was quiet but fun. Every day together felt like a new adventure. Not the kind so many of her Gryffindors sought after. But the kind where one woke up each morning with a sense of longing to experience the day together with one’s partner. Even after the newness of the relationship had worn off, Minerva never felt bored.
“What is it, love?” she had asked Rolanda one night after getting into bed. “You’ve seemed on edge all evening.”
Rolanda had sighed in that contemplative way that simultaneously drove Minerva insane and brought a small smile to her face.
“I’d like...there’s something that I’d like for us to try together, but I know that if I asked, you’d say no,” Rolanda replied. “It just doesn’t seem like something you’d be interested in.”
Minerva sat up. “What is it? You don’t know that I’d say no.” She flicked on the light and smirked at her lover before continuing, “Is it sexual in nature? I’m open to trying just about anything.”
And that’s how Minerva found herself tied to the bedposts and experimenting with impact play.
Maybe their relationship did have a modicum of pain involved. But that pain always gave way to pleasure. Again, and again, and again.
Setting her tea aside, Minerva went into the bedroom and stripped slowly before lying back on the bed. A wave of her wand had her favourite restraints fastening themselves around her wrists, ankles, and each corner of the bed. Rolanda wouldn’t be gone for too much longer. Besides, she found that she rather enjoyed the sensation of being tied up for long periods of time. It was calming. Grounding. Almost meditative. And it would drive Rolanda absolutely crazy.

A Perfectly Innocent Conversation, of Course - Minerva/Rolanda
For Sapphic September 2019 Day 8: “May I?”  from @rockmarina‘s prompt list.
Teen | 1,232 words | Pre-Relationship, Innuendo, Suggestive Themes, Flirting
(AO3 | My other Sapphic September 2019 works: AO3 | Tumblr)
A Perfectly Innocent Conversation, of Course
“May I?”
Minerva looked up over the rim of her reading glasses to find the new Quidditch instructor gesturing at the armchair beside her. A quick glance around the staffroom showed many a free chair or sofa, as the room was otherwise vacant. The question was for more than sitting, clearly.
“By all means,” she said, turning her attention back to the treatise Albus had written about the latest bills to pass the Wizengamot, and all the things wrong with them, hoping her lack of interest would ward off whatever conversation was coming.
It wasn’t that she didn’t like this Rolanda Hooch, she seemed personable enough, but that she just didn’t know what to do with her. Having been educated on the continent, even though she was from a British family, she had never been sorted. Albus had dismissed Minerva’s suggestion that she should stick the sorting hat on Rolanda to see what was what. She still thought it would be informative enough, even if meaningless in the grand scheme of things.
“I see Albus is still peddling that about,” Rolanda said, ignoring social etiquette and talking to her anyway. “I told him he should just submit it for publication already. There’s no point delaying, he’s very firm in his positions and unlikely to change anything.”
Minerva sighed and put the treatise to the side to give Rolanda her reluctant attention.
Once again, she was momentarily startled by her appearance. The shock of her short white hair had still not worn off, nor the way she dressed. Her robes fell open to reveal the slacks she was wearing, along with the loose blouse that really could have been a man’s shirt. Maybe it was, Minerva didn’t allow herself to look closely, she too often found herself focusing on where the billowy shit tucked into the tight, high waist of her slacks when she did.
It was a style she herself admired the look of, but it was still far too uncommon to shake the tradition of long skirts within the castle. Besides, she was wordly enough to understand the message Rolanda put out with her clothing and hair. It could have been just an attempt to stand out amongst the other female staff, or to follow those new trends, but the expression she sometimes got while looking at the female staff nailed the coffin shut on those possibilities. It was a message, and she read it crystal clear.
“It doesn’t do to rush these things,” Minerva said dryly. “British politics are very different from what you must be used to on the continent.”
Rolanda released a sharp bark of laughter, tossing her head back. She rattled off something in French, then held a hand to her chest and sighed. Minerva didn’t waste time telling her she didn’t understand French. She found the entire display unnecessary, like much about the woman.
“Perhaps you should spend some time on the continent,” Rolanda finally said, reaching over and nudging Minerva’s arm in a display of over-familiarity. “You might find yourself with a new appreciation of your British politics.”
“I find that hard to believe,” Minerva said, looking around for an escape.
She couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but something about the woman unnerved her. She lost her centre around her and never quite knew what to say, or how Rolanda would react. If Albus continued to refuse, she might just sneak into his office and abduct the sorting hat to shove on Rolanda’s head to get to the bottom of things anyway. It belonged to the school, not Albus, so she wasn’t entirely sure it was even his decision to make.
A house didn’t reveal everything serious about a person, but it still said a great deal. It would provide a basis of how to approach conversation with her, at least.
“Ah, enough about politics,” Rolanda said, slapping the arm of her chair. “I was perusing the Quidditch trophies today when I spied a familiar name!”
Minerva audibly groaned before she could stop herself.
“When were you going to tell me you played? This certainly explains your passion for the house cup!” Rolanda’s eyes fairly twinkled from excitement. “You must come flying with me!”
“Must I?” Minerva commented dryly.
“Yes! I insist,” Rolanda said, slapping the arm of her chair again. “You don’t know how I long to fly with a fellow adult, and fine woman at that.” Minerva was not blind to the sly look Rolanda sent her after those words, but studiously did not react. “Teaching the children is my passion, of course, but they afford no challenge! I played keeper for a time you know, and you a chaser? A fine match for some good-natured competition, don’t you say?”
Minerva could hear Albus agreeing in her ear. He’d often tried to talk her into joining the Gryffindor team for training, though he’d at least had the good sense to give up after a few months.
Even though she didn’t know Rolanda well, Minerva had a feeling she didn’t back down easily, from anything.
Many signs pointed to Gryffindor, but she had a bit of a cunning feel to her.
Minerva really itched to shove the sorting hat over her head.
Still, she couldn’t deny she did miss flying. It was all well and good to live vicariously through her little lions, but watching them wasn’t the same as flying herself.
“Oh, go on,” Rolanda urged, as if sensing her longing. “Where’s the harm in a little friendly match? Unless you think you can’t get past my defences. You might surprise yourself, you know.”
It took a generous helping of self-control not to roll her eyes at that blatant phrasing.
“I don’t fly anymore,” she said instead. “You would have an unfair advantage as I am no longer practised in the role of chaser.”
Rolanda grinned wickedly. “I’ll go easy on you. Let you slip a few in to warm up.”
“Oh, for heaven’s sake,” Minerva huffed, her cheeks heating despite herself.
Rolanda threw her head back and laughed again. She slapped the arm of her chair and got to her feet.
“Oh, I see through that prim and proper attitude, Minerva,” she said. “You understand me better than you like to pretend.”
Minerva pursed her lips and didn’t deign to respond.
“Crass jokes aside, do let me know if you change your mind and would like to fly sometime,” Rolanda said. “It would be nice to be up there with someone closer to my calibre, and it’s a shame to let that talent go to waste!”
“I have many more important things to do,” Minerva said stiffly, annoyed with herself for not being as opposed to the idea as she should have been.
“But not many more enjoyable things, I’ll warrant.”
“Back to the crass jokes already?” Minerva said disapprovingly.
Rolanda put a hand to her chest. “Why, Minerva, what ever could you mean? I was speaking of Quidditch.” She shot Minerva a sly look. “What were you thinking of?”
“Oh, off with you!” Minerva huffed.
With another loud laugh, Rolanda did retreat, letting the door close loudly behind her on her way out. Minerva found herself staring at that door for an inordinate amount of time.
She shook her head at herself and picked up Albus’ treatise again, banishing thoughts of flying, as well as certain other things.
End.

So I’ve been trying to write again this summer
What have I been writing? lesbian Harry Potter fanfiction, of course
Should you read it? Obviously yes
A Winter Lunacy: (A Hooch/McGonagall one-shot) On one cold December evening, Christmas break has left the castle deserted and McGonagall wanders the library in search of a good book. When she unexpectedly runs into Hooch between the stacks, she finds something very different to keep her warm. [AO3] Nargles & Neruda: (A Post-Canon Hermione/Luna multi-chapter work)The year after the war, Hermione returns alone to finish her last year at Hogwarts and nothing seems to be going as planned. With Ron in London and Hermione back in school, it seems like they make less and less sense together every day. As she struggles with processing the effects of the war, Hermione takes comfort in the unexpected friendship of Luna Lovegood who shows her that maybe the life she had planned isn’t the one that she wants after all. 1985
“Minerva marries Ephinstone right after the war that took her brother, friends, and former students. When Minerva's husband dies, from a stupid accident that no one could have foreseen, Minerva defaults again to black. Until the edges start glimmering, turning just a little grey.”
““The Snitch might wander but it always comes back,” Rolanda whispers in Minerva’s ear when she’s starting to look at her dinner like it might eat her instead again. She perks up and picks up her fork again. “You can catch the Beater, but it won’t score you any points,” Minerva tells her, later, instead of thank you. But it’s better than a thank you, and Rolanda winks.”
1.365 words. Explicit. Contains gratuitous Quidditch jokes and grief, as well as a bit of a start on healing. On AO3.
Written for the Femmefest 2019, have a look at all the other (awesome, amazing showstopping) fics written for it too!
If you want more when you’re done, Saorsa takes place in the same universe, even though both fics stand alone.
