Protective Mike headcanons! To the whole main cast because a lot of my Byler headcanons involve Mike being protective already why not!

Mike will cross his arms and pretend that he’s not paying attention to Max when she skateboards beside him but after that fall in s2 he’s always ready to reach out and stabilize her in a split second

If Mike has any leftovers, he always offers his food to Holly first if she’s still hungry

He also makes sure she’s never unheard at the kitchen table. Lord save the soul who dares to speak over Holly because Mike will roar at them to SHUT UP and then smile at Holly like so what were you saying? :)

Lucas loves birds just because I’m projecting - and Mike doesn’t really care about birds but if Lucas sees a cool one nearby Mike won’t let anyone scare the bird off so that Lucas can have his fun

Mike is basically a crosswalk guard when he’s with anyone when they hit a crosswalk. Boy is extending his arms and holding the other person/people back, making sure the road is clear before they walk.

Mike is a notoriously slow biker when someone’s riding with him. In danger, he’s booking it, but otherwise, he’s vigilant and tries to avoid rocky paths

If anyone gets hurt near Mike, he’s going to become their personal crutch until they can move independently, sometimes even to the point of irritation. Like someone could hurt a toe and walk fine but Mike is right under their arm like hey you okay? He did this a lot to Dustin before s4 because I said so

Mike’s a little clumsy but if he’s carrying something hot or delicate or the like, he’s using both hands and shooing anyone in his way so he doesn’t drop that thing and hurt anyone

When it’s raining, Mike makes sure that raincoat hoods are being affixed if they keep flying down - he started doing this to everyone in The Party after doing it to Holly so much

Mike gets so angry if people talk shit about his friends. This is canon, but I like to imagine that it extends to their families, too. Like he’ll throw Hopper under the bus but he’s actually really adamant that he’s a good person. Same with Joyce. You will see him after class if you even make a “your mom” joke about her

Mike is first to point out if someone is hurt and figure out the who, what, when, where, and why it happened and make sure they’re safe (Will’s first to notice which then leads to Mike interrogating)

mike has this weird thing where he feels this urge to just be held and comforted but he feels guilty for craving comfort so he doesn’t ask anyone for it and just holds onto his pillow a little tighter that night when he goes to bed. will can always tell when mike gets like this, and sometimes catches it before mike does. and so he created a cheat code.

it started one summer when they were around 9 years old, hanging out in mike’s basement as a desperate attempt to escape the evil indiana sun. their escape attempt only helped for so long, and will could see that mike was starting to grow restless with his need to be held. so will does the very first thing that comes to mind to get them out of this situation. he asks mike if his mom bought any popsicles.

mike, thoroughly confused, says yes and gets up and leads will upstairs to the freezer where they keep the popsicles. mike goes to grab one out of the freezer when will suddenly throws his arms around his waist. it’s way too hot for hugging, especially so close together, but it just feels right to hold onto mike. mike hesitantly wraps his arms around will too, about to ask what this is about when will cuts him off.

“you’re a great friend mike, i’m so glad we’re best friends.”

and suddenly 9 year old mike wheeler can breathe again and that random urge is gone.

there were very few instances where mike would get this urge since the very first popsicle, but will was always there to fix it. mike would get these urges out of nowhere, and will would always notice and hug/ show mike affection quietly and ask for a popsicle.

no matter the weather, they would always have popsicles. whenever will asked for one, mike would always throw himself into will’s arms and make himself as small as possible, as if he were trying to fit inside of will’s ribcage.

it was always accompanied with small words of praise and affection, small bandaids placed over the cracks in mike’s wilted self-esteem. will could never piece together why these urges were happening, and what made them so frequent but he always knew how to fix it.

when all the upside down nonsense started to happen, mike’s urges were doubled in frequency, but will couldn’t ever fix them because mike had el now.

mike would never admit it, but el never soothed the urge as well as will ever did. she made it better, yes, but she didn’t make it go away like will did.

when the byers and el moved away to california, mike started to ignore those urges and put his time into small time hobbies and lollygags to get his mind off the clawing ache in his chest.

the worst urge that mike and will had ever experienced together came shortly after vecna had put max in the hospital, mike and el had their big breakup fight and the world was generally going to shit. the wheeler family home was decided to be homebase, and there were always multiple bodies in multiple spaces in multiple times. except mike’s room, which only held mike and will. no one else.

a few days after the california crew returned to hawkins, mike found himself sat on his bed facing the wall, and just feeling a hole carve itself into his chest, leaving a soul-crushing bitter emptiness in its place. wrapping his arms around himself and hugging a pillow didn’t help and so he continued to stare blankly at the wall. will walks in to find mike staring, absently clawing at his chest through his thin black t shirt.

he walks around the bed to sit next to mike before slowly wrapping his arm around his waist and putting his head on mike’s shoulder. the room is quiet, the only sound is the faint arguing of meaningless topics below, and mike’s quiet, shuddering breath. only to be interrupted with a quiet,

“hey mike? do you guys have any popsicles?”

Mike is the instinct to worry for those of whom he loves , thunder outside of your window that surprisingly comforts you, a long sleeved graphic tee and memorizing something you mentioned to have liked.

Something that they both have in common is their instinct to protect you, and they act on that instinct.

It doesn't matter what offense somebody did, it's all equally bad. Someone insults you, puts you in danger, tries to pursue you romantically, etc. That person will feel their hellish wrath.

Living in a cozy apartment with them that has enough room for all of you. Jane has her sculptures on several surfaces. Succulents of all colors have their sweet homes on your desk.

Mike also has multiple guitars all over your shared bedroom

He writes songs about the two of you and describes y'all in the most precious way possible. Jane looks at him with adoring eyes while he plays the guitar and let's his voice out.

Ted will also put his best efforts in since he wants to keep Karen happy. He'll enjoy his food and ask the typical questions!

stranger things summer headcanons because tis the season

mike is that stubborn idiot who halfway gets heatstroke from wearing twelve layers of clothing in the 90 degree heat.

lucas and max are carnival CHAMPIONS. they go on all the rides, eat all the cotton candy. once they’re in there, they won’t leave until it closes for the night.

will really likes swimming. however, he prefers the lake over the pool, because it’s less crowded. he ends up teaching swimming lessons to all the toddlers over break, and mothers love him to death for how gentle he is.

dustin and erica have a weekly tradition of loitering around family video on saturdays. it’s one of their busiest days, so their annoyance has put (the very prone to distraction) robin and steve’s job’s in jeopardy too many times. keith watches them with a very keen eye, once proclaiming to dustin that he’ll have his head if there’s any further funny business.

at the beginning of the warmer months, max likes to get an extremely short haircut to avoid the heat.

mike’s incessant boredom always has him picking up new hobbies, or enhancing the ones he has over the summer. he’ll learn to make friendship bracelets, or to skateboard with max’s spare (on the off chance she lets him), or write half a novel.

el became a daily patron of their local ice cream store the very second that max explained to her what a waffle cone was.

lucas once caught dustin watching my little pony with his sister, and while his confusion and nonstop laughter was prominent at first, he was very quickly thrown into the viewing. the three now meet up as often as they can to watch together.

mike works at the movie theatre, partly for the money, but mostly because he likes knowing first which new horror and fantasy movies are coming to hawkins. his vast knowledge delights will, and improves their movie visits together.

erica built a treehouse a little ways away from her house, which is the frequent location of midnight ghost stories galore with her friends.

the byers’ yard is vast and empty, the perfect location for bonfires. whenever possible, the whole party bands together to throw a bonfire bash, complete with jonathan’s killer smore’s.

while dustin goes to camp know where in june, lucas attends a basketball camp. there, his investment in the game grows, and he’s able to make a ton of friends who show him awesome tricks and techniques.
