Truthfully, man, I think the white people have more troubles than the Indians do, you know? They have something on their mind all the time.

spooky tuesday is a (now not so new!) podcast where we’re breaking down all of our favorite slashers, thrillers, monster movies and black comedies on the new scariest day of the week.
did anyone else just get the strangest craving for pizza? we could use a little snack here at spooky tuesday, especially since we've got nothing to do for the rest of the night besides play the harpsichord, try on other people's glasses, and snoop through this big old house while babysitting some old lady. oh, yeah — and we're watching the house of the devil (2009). in ti west's satanic panic-inspired '80s slow burn, college student samantha agrees to take on an unusual gig for some much-needed rent money, and though bestie greta gerwig reminds her to be wary of weirdos, things still go more than a little sideways.
give spooky tuesday a listen on apple podcasts, spotify, iheart radio, or stitcher

Will the kidnappers drop Elaine off at the Campbell's after Danny and Burt make the drop? Or will she have to take the bus? Can Eunice really be happy living on a farm with Dutch? Or will she miss Bloomingdale's? If Detective Donohue gets Chester, will he be able to get Jessica, or will she tell him to get lost? Where has Carol gone? What will Jodie do? And does this mean he has to return the wedding presents? These questions and many others will be answered on the next episode of Soap.

AHHHHHH I FOUND A TAKEN INTERVIEW W HEATHER/REI I HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE 🤯
"Redeeming qualities?" the actress reflects. "I think the important thing about playing Mary was her relationship to her father and how she idolizes Owen Crawford, her grandfather. She sees in Owen the father figure she wishes she had had. So her motives aren't bad: it's how she carries out those motives. She definitely never felt much love from her father, so she opts for things she can control instead. And when she finally does find love, she can't control it. So she must find a way to get rid of it. I loved what I saw of the character in the first two scripts, which was all that was written when I started. I just thought, *God. how great!' I always play bitches, so it was great to be a layered bitch — a complicated one who stretches over 10 hours instead of one or two."
and this is so fucking cute im gonna die:
A number of Donahue's scenes are with Matt Frewer, who plays Chet Wakeman, an old family friend who becomes Mary's love interest and alien-hunting accomplice. "It was so much fun." she says of working with Frewer. "We didn't stop laughing for five months. If you've ever met Matt, it's non- stop. You laugh until you cry, and that segues into a crying scene, so you're laughing and then crying."

The House of the Devil (Ti West, 2009)
Cast: Jocelin Donahue, Tom Noonan, Mary Woronov, Greta Gerwig, AJ Bowen, Dee Wallace. Screenplay: Ti West. Cinematography: Elliot Rockett. Production design: Jade Healy. Film editing: Ti West. Music: Jeff Grace.
I've said it before: I'm not particularly interested in or scared by horror movies. But as an amateur film historian, I feel compelled every October to sample the horror classics and newer movies provided in anticipation of Halloween by movie channels and streaming services, even the high-toned ones like the Criterion Channel. The trouble sometimes is that I'm not in on the jokes provided by the horrormeisters, who love to reference older films in the genre. Several things should have clued me in, starting with the oddly flat-footed title, that The House of the Devil was going to be something of an hommage to earlier films, particularly the opening screen that referred to the wave of “satanic cults” that made news in the 1980s. The deliberately retro look of the opening credits themselves should have alerted me, and when Greta Gerwig showed up with Farrah Fawcett hair I did begin to suspect something was up. Since I didn't watch horror movies in the '70s and ‘80s, I'm not the right audience for Ti West's throwback movie. So all I can say is that it's a well-done tribute to the kind of movies I should have been watching in order to be the right kind of audience. It's nicely paced, if a little slow in spots, setting up the menace lurking in the old dark house, and showing us that Samantha, well acted by Jocelin Donahue, is spunky and resourceful up to a point -- that point being her willingness to go upstairs, something nobody in a horror movie should ever do. And the cataclysmic burst of action at the film's climax is as satisfying as it should be. I even appreciated the coda, with its evocation of a true classic that transcends the genre, Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby (1968). But I have to leave it to horror aficionados to explicate all the references by writer-director-editor Ti West to the period he's honoring, which makes The House of the Devil just a bit of a miss for me.

List of Non-fiction Books on Autism
[Please note: I am only listing the books I have read on this list. This is not meant to be a comprehensive or complete list at all. I want to share the books that have been helpful to me so far. *Updated 09/17/23]
Approaching Autistic Adulthood: The Road Less Travelled by Grace Liu
| This book has a lot of advice about navigating adulthood as an autistic person. I found the advice on dealing with burnout especially helpful!
The Autism Friendly Cook Book by Lydia Wilkins
| This is one of my favorite books! If you're like me, and you really struggle with all things kitchen and cooking, this is a really helpful resource. Not only does it have a useful section that details techniques and supplies that you may need, but the recipes have an estimated energy and skill level! This book has helped me approach cooking more prepared, which helps me with coping with anxiety and preventing meltdowns.
Connecting with the Autism Spectrum: How to Talk, how to Listen, and Why you Shouldn't Call it High-Functioning by Casey "Remrov" Vormer
| This book is one of the most accessible books I've read so far. The language is both concise and easier to follow than most. It is less general than some other books on this list, so if you don't relate to it immediately or at all, that doesn't make you more or less autistic. Your experience (including location, assigned gender, gender identity, sexuality, co-occuring conditions, etc.) influence the way you exist as an autistic person.
Living with PTSD on the Autism Spectrum: Insightful Analysis with Practical Applications by Lisa Morgan, M.ED. and Mary P. Donahue, PH.D.
| If you're struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and are on the Autism spectrum, this book could be really helpful! It provides research in plain language and offers helpful examples of how PTSD and ASD can interact. It also shares insight on how to recognize abuse and trauma, as well as how to advocate/seek advocacy for yourself or loved ones with ASD. I think the personal examples are really helpful, but I do want to caution that these also make it another very specific reading experience. If you read it, and do not see your experience represented, that is not your fault!
Neurotribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity by Steve Silberman
| Written by a journalist, this book packs a lot of information! It focuses on the history of Autism as a diagnoses, and for that reasons can be overwhelming and heartbreaking at times. The author is (I think) overly sympathetic to H*ns Asp*rger's contribution to Autism research; but from what I understand, the book was written at a time before the extent of his involvement with the N*zi party was understood, so maybe a future addition will reflect what we know now much better. I'm grateful that I read it, because it put my own late diagnosis into a perspective that gives me a little bit more peace.
The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism by Naoki Higashida
| This book is excellent to read for both autistic people and people who have an autistic loved one since it is focused on answering questions about how some autistic people think and behave (like stimming.) The author is an autistic boy who uses communication aids to express himself, and he has many insights into what it's like to have specific support needs and how it can be challenging to get those needs met.
Sensory: Life on the Spectrum organized and edited by Schnumm
| This is an anthology of comics by autistic creators who use visual story-telling to talk about their experiences. It was so nice to see my experiences in their stories, and to see other's experiences that I can't relate to as well!
Sincerely, Your Autistic Child: What People on the Autism Spectrum Wish Their Parents Knew About Growing Up, Acceptance, and Identity edited by Emily Page Ballou, Sharon daVanport, and Morénike Giwa Onaiwu
| This collection of essays/letters is wonderful, especially if you wish to learn more about the experiences of a diverse group of autistic people. It highlights that there are as many ways to be autistic as there are autistic people in the world (something that many of the books on this list say.)
Spectrums: Autistic Trans People in Their Own Words edited by Maxfield Sparrow
| "friend of mine, i am here, too. i am flapping and humming and feeling and being. i am learning who i am, i am being who i am, i am being loud and bright and joyful and true! and they are afraid, and they do not understand, but i am not for them, and friend of mine, neither are you" (from "a letter to a friend" by ren koloni).
This collection is so, so important to me as a genderqueer autist. The above quote is from my favorite contribution in the book, and I'm so grateful to the author for their words.
Unmasking Autism: Discovering the New Faces of Neurodiversity by Dr. Devon Price
| This was the first book I read when I learned that I'm autistic. It is informative and compassionate. I think it is on the lower end of accessibility on the list so far, but it still does a wonderful job of explaining some of the difficult concepts. I think Dr. Price's explanation of the difference between bottom-up and top-down thinking is the best I've read so far, which was especially difficult for me to wrap my head around as a literal thinker. Just remember that if you pick up a book and it's difficult to understand, you're allowed to ask for help, take time to away from it, or put it down for good.
-
That's the list so far! I'm constantly searching for more books to read, so if you have recommendations, please let me know!

Halloween, book 1, post Miami, at Donahue’s. Tiffany is wearing a costume and Ethan can’t tear his eyes out of her. What is she wearing?
Tumblr media
Tension rises between Tiffany and Ethan at the Halloween party.
Rating/category: Teen+ /  angst-ish, AU
Warnings: whole lotta pining 💕
Author’s note: In my personal E&T canonverse, The Miami Conference took place right before Christmas, so I come here bearing a short AU scene 👀
____
The sight of Ethan Ramsey glued to his precious whiskey, frowning deeply at the cheerful lot surrounding him, his stern, unimpressed gaze sweeping the room as though searching for the easiest escape route, isn’t a surprise—but the timing most certainly is.
This must be an image torn out of his personal hell: watching his ridiculously dressed coworkers clown around as they indulge in the adult rendition of trick-or-treating. He’s the odd one out, wearing outrageously ordinary and just as expensive blue suit and displeased grimace twisting his majestic features. His presence at Donahue’s on one of the busiest nights of the year doesn’t make any sense, and yet…Doctor Addams seems to know why he’s here.
As if their minds were doomed to collide, he finds her silhouette in the crowd; the ocean of his eyes washes over her again and again, sending an overwhelming thrill down the length of her body. His demeanor instantly softens—he’s suddenly less frightening, more frightened. The way he devours her head to toe, deliriously roaming around every curve, makes her feel powerful.
Proves she is right.
Inspired by her second Bloody Mary, Tiffany sways over to Ethan, her hips boldly move to the sultry beat of She Wolf playing in the background. Her heart pulsates in her throat, stomach churns maliciously, ready to betray the pathetic whims, but she trusts her disguise—she’s skilled enough to survive the anxious wave surging up.
„They let you in without a costume?” Her roguish smirk greets him, and she’s certain he doesn’t miss the flash of fondness and longing mixed in her keen gaze as the very same shade couruscates in his dazzling sapphires.
His lips twitch slightly, but all she gets is a nod and a dry response flatly contradicting its unintended comedic purpose. „I smiled while passing through the door.”
She bursts out laughing, the roar so infectious the corners of Ethan’s mouth inevitably quirk up, forming into a sly grin.
„Clever.” Tiffany raises her glass. „No one would recognize a smiling Terminator.”
„What about you?” He asks, his eyes pierce hers, clearly intent on avoiding her deep cleavage inviting him for a not-so-innocent peek down the path his hands wandered with reckless abandon a few nights ago.
„What about me?” She replies nonchalantly with a raised brow, her heart rate increasing to a dangerous pounding.
„You’re not engaging in this lunacy?”
„Oh, but I am.”
Doctor Ramsey falls silent for a long, obscene moment, drinking her in, measuring her face. The probing intensity of his icy blue eyes almost melting her resilience.
Letting the air between them sizzle.
„What is this supposed to be then?” He points his finger at her all-black outfit, all but convincingly unstirred by the skintight material of her dress and its sole intention to bring him ruin.
Tiffany bites her lower lip as she quickly reconsiders her options, their eyes still locked and loaded.
There’s a she-wolf in the closet
Let it out so it can breathe
With a life-ruining smile fit for a wicked enchantress, she decides to aim for his head—it’s the night of horror after all.
„The risk you didn’t take.”
_____
*mic drops*
Then, I imagine that Bryce calls Tiffany and she waves Ethan goodbye as she retreats to her friends, the tension dragging around her 🥰
This aka the outfit: The gang has been excited about the Halloween party at Donahue’s for weeks, but Tiffany couldn’t share the sentiment. She’s been too absorbed in her secret life with Patient X and Dr. Ramsey.
Sienna decided to take the matter into her own hands and came up with a last-minute costume for Tiff. Their joint effort brought a modern day witch to life, AHS Coven style.
Like this, but with burgundy lips:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anon, dear, you made me want to create an AU to my post-Miami fic Puncture Wound khdkhdkbk I’ll be thinking about this deliciousness for the entire week now. Thank you so much for the ask! ❤️❤️❤️

Every Record I Own - Day 820: Nomeansno 0 + 2 = 1
Nomeansno began in 1979 as the rhythm section two-piece of Rob and John Wright. They added Andy Kerr on guitar in 1983, a year after releasing their debut album Mama. While Nomeansno always retained a heavy focus on the interplay between bass and drums, Kerr found a spot to insert his wiry, jagged guitar lines without undermining the low-end force of the Wright brothers. Kerr wound up with another crucial role: nodules on Rob's vocal cords meant that he had to step back from lead vocals, allowing Kerr's snotty timbre to outweigh Wright's booming baritone on the remainder of their '80s output.
Nomeansno closed out the '80s with the most popular album of their career, 1989's Wrong. The band's rising profile across North America and Europe allowed (or perhaps forced) them to quit their day jobs, and by the beginning of the '90s the band was touring full-time. When it came time to record the follow-up to Wrong, the band was in a very different position. They were no longer practicing several times a week and slowly stockpiling new material---they'd been on tour non-stop and were now having to quickly cobble together another studio album so they would have something new to tour on. The band had become a job.
Such realities weren't generally considered cool back in the '90s. Being a career musician in a punk band wasn't heroic to anyone. Professional musicians didn't take you seriously and the punks considered you a sell out. The irony was that Nomeansno were phenomenal musicians and staunchly committed to the underground.
If anything, Nomeansno could've benefitted from playing the industry game a little more. Their press photos were always confusing and never clearly featured all three members. They championed younger bands and even started their own label, but they also avoided opening for bigger bands, even as they watched the younger bands they'd supported eclipse them in popularity. Nevermind had come out just two months prior to 0 + 2 = 1 and Nomeansno could've easily capitalized on the global interest in the Pacific Northwest underground rock scene, but instead they were content to continue touring squats in Europe. At a time when it seemed like Nomeansno should've gotten even bigger, they instead saw the first dip in album sales.
Maybe folks just weren't as excited by 0 + 2 = 1. Maybe it was written in too much of a hurry. But I don't buy that. I'll admit that i don't love "Everyday I Start to Ooze" (some of the vocals tread a little too far into theatrics) and that I mainly get my fix on Side 1. But jeezus... can we talk about those first five songs?? "Now" is an electrifying album opener. "The Fall" is classic Nomeansno power. "0 + 2 = 1" is like a nightmarish mashup of Ginsberg and Burroughs prose sent against a lurching Man Is The Bastard riff. "Valley of the Blind" reasserts their classic punk vigor before "Mary" comes crashing down with its monolithic bass-driven weight. And Side 2 is packed with punches too. Whether it's the vitriolic attack of "The Night Nothing Became Everything" and "I Think You Know" or the blueprint for Unwound's future blend of guitar dissonance and mid tempo bass throb on "Ghosts," the songs are solid enough for the album to be held on the same pedestal as its predecessors.
But Andy Kerr would leave the band at the end of the album cycle, officially capping off the classic era of the band. Grunge was having its moment in the spotlight. Pop-punk would follow on its heel steps. And the two weird old guys from Victoria, BC that looked like Phil Donahue's long lost siblings and sounded like Dead Kennedys and Rush had a baby would continue to avoid the limelight while cranking out records and living in tour vans.
