"Redeeming qualities?" the actress reflects. "I think the important thing about playing Mary was her relationship to her father and how she idolizes Owen Crawford, her grandfather. She sees in Owen the father figure she wishes she had had. So her motives aren't bad: it's how she carries out those motives. She definitely never felt much love from her father, so she opts for things she can control instead. And when she finally does find love, she can't control it. So she must find a way to get rid of it. I loved what I saw of the character in the first two scripts, which was all that was written when I started. I just thought, *God. how great!' I always play bitches, so it was great to be a layered bitch — a complicated one who stretches over 10 hours instead of one or two."

A number of Donahue's scenes are with Matt Frewer, who plays Chet Wakeman, an old family friend who becomes Mary's love interest and alien-hunting accomplice. "It was so much fun." she says of working with Frewer. "We didn't stop laughing for five months. If you've ever met Matt, it's non- stop. You laugh until you cry, and that segues into a crying scene, so you're laughing and then crying."

The Unimaginable Terror of The Blair Witch Project
One of the most exceptional Found Footage Horror films from the past two decades is The Blair Witch Project (1999). Filmed in Seneca Creek State Park in Montgomery County, Maryland, it follows teenagers Heather (Rei Hance), Mike (Michael Williams), and Josh (Joshua Leonard) as they venture into the Black Hills Woods near the fictional town of Burkittsville, Maryland to film a documentary about a local legend attributed to mysterious occurrences known as the Blair Witch. Throughout the film, the group experiences supernatural events such as discovering three stone cairns built around their campsite upon waking up after the first night, hanging stick figures in the woods, hiking in circles, the sound of twigs snapping and children laughing during the second night, their possessions moved around, and an unseen force shaking their tent during the second night. After Josh disappears and only Heather and Mike remain, the film’s climax ensues. The pair are also attacked by the unseen force, their fates left unknown as Heather’s camera cuts out. This cliffhanger ending serves as an effective transition for discussion of an original film review from the time of its release.
Ever since The Blair Witch Project premiered in 1999, its popularity has amassed nearly two-hundred fifty million dollars worldwide. This is discussed within Roger Ebert’s review from the same year. When sharing his beliefs regarding what makes this film truly terrifying, Ebert recounts the following: “It has no fancy special effects or digital monsters, but its characters get lost in the woods, hear noises in the night and find disturbing stick figures hanging from trees. One of them discovers slime on his backpack”, and “Because their imaginations have been inflamed by talk of witches, hermits, and child murderers in the forest, because their food is running out and their smokes are gone, they (and we) are a lot more scared than if they were merely being chased by some guy in a ski mask” (Ebert, ¶ 2). Through this example, it is clear that The Blair Witch Project focuses on the dark and mysterious nature of the woods with its tall trees and unfamiliar trails to convey the fact that evil is always lurking close by despite never being seen. Horror such as this is extremely unsettling, since the unseen evil manifests itself through each character, causing them to lose their minds and turn against each other. This is what makes The Blair Witch Project truly terrifying, since the audience witnesses a group of close friends transform into mindless psychotics who will perform any acts necessary to survive. In conclusion, as stated within the JSTOR article from my previous entry entitled: Found-Footage Horror and the Frame’s Undoing, Found Footage Horror is often “As incapable of containing what exists within its territory as it is of protecting it from the invasion of what lies beyond its borders” (Sayad, 49).

I found this by googling the phrase most helpful to me lately: “Fidelity to all that is” which I got from Rei Hance, who is now a bodhisattva getting wrung out by life; in previous iterations she starred in the The Blair Witch Project. So sweet to read this Mr. Phillip Gibb’s words in Ye Old Google, as today I’ve been struggling with this exact phrase and wondering: how to metabolize “private possession of pleasure”? Specifically the alive little things you observe every day, on the street and in a park and on the bark of an oak tree? They make me very emotional and I want to share all of it and feel special and loved by other special humans, which is not always an option! What am I supposed to do with the rhymes and synchronicities? Other than laugh at myself for getting so hung up on a thorn catching my skin just as I hear Mark Lanegan sing, “Bite the thorn that pierces the skin.” And bite the thorn, I guess! Rei’s words are the prayer I bring a tree every day. Her work, she says, is metabolism.
