If You Confuse People, You Lose People: 4 Steps To Simplify Any Message

Step 1: Meet People Where They Are To Take Them Where They Want To Go, i.e. figure out what the other party cares about, which is your point of entry

Every pitch should be personalized - your credibility is always on the line + your effort/sincerity will leave an impression (everybody wants to work with people that ‘get it’).

Who am I talking to and how are they going to relate to whatever it is in my story, and how can I most successfully connect with them?

Step #2: Speak Insider Jargon

The second is you need to let go of jargon and speak in terms that people actually understand. When people are confused, you lose. And over complicating what you're saying will make it too easy for people to zone out on your message.

Some people are so used to their jargon, and they want to sound intelligent but its important to break it down to a level where everybody can understand, which is actually making it smarter because you’re connecting with people- The smartest you can do is make someone able to understand you.

*Also, keep in mind that most people are not giving you 100% of their attention whether online or offline, so keep things at a level where people can tune in and tune out. 

Step #3: Get Rid Of Extra Details

The first step is all about simplifying your message. People don't need to know your entire backstory so it's important to keep things tight and right so the important stuff you want to get across is front and center.

Next is you need to edit your message and get rid of any extra details so it's concise and to the point.

Start with something that reels people in (which you would know by doing your research/homework) + something that is most promotable about yourself, then include the details that are strategically forward.

*When you’re finishing up, put a button on it, i.e. don’t end on a random detail - instead, circle back to your message to help tie it all together for people. Important because if you start meandering to a detail that doesn’t relate to the topic that you’re trying to convey, you lose people. Stay on point and think as you’re speaking, “Does this detail really pertain to what I’m trying to convey? Is this point moving us forward?” - the second you start veering off, then people don’t know what to do with what you’re saying - make it easy for people to follow you.

Step #4: Test Drive Your Message With People Outside Of Your Inner Circle

And lastly, test drive your message on people outside of your expertise and/or friend/family group. Getting feedback from someone who doesn't know you or your industry will help you get HONEST feedback that will help you hone your skills even more - helps you see where people don’t understand you/ aren’t interested.

People in your inner circle probably wants to be supportive + thinks like you so its important to test on people who don’t share your expertise.
