WHY MARIA'S CAUSE OF DEATH MATTERS (and why so many depections of her by abled people make me vividly uncomfortable)
So! Let's hop right in: Maria's death matters. Not only is it the foundational moment of Shadow's character (which is why "maria lives" aus are so hard to pull off, imo), but it showcases the cruelty of the government, gun specifically. Maria and shadow are both victims of circumstance.
Maria did not sacrifice herself because she was "dying anyway", she sacrificed herself because she wanted to save her brother (who in turn sacrificed himself to save Sonic, and I don't believe that was a coincidence. He LEARNED THAT from her, for better or worse). Only one of them was going to survive, and she chose him. Her disability had absolutely nothing to do with the situation besides to provide a motivation for Gerald to create the ARK. Shadow himself said in an old interview that he would go back and switch places with her if he could. Because her life WAS NOT INHERENTLY WORTH LESS. Maria's life was a tragedy because the government killed her. NOT because she chronically ill. It wasn't bound to happen. From what we saw, she was completely fine as long as she was on the ARK, and may have been fine on the surface as well, provided she had adequate care and avoided contagions.
Killing a disabled character with her own illness, when there is no evidence she would have died young, is incredibly disenheartening to real disabled people. Our lives are already scary, why are you pushing the narrative that we all die young, no matter the circumstances? (a narrative that is completely untrue, if you were wondering.)
Conclusion: KILLING HER DUE TO HER DISABILITY IS ABLEIST. PERIOD. that wasn't the point of her death, that destroys shadow's character motives, and it completely minimizes her sacrifice. I would literally rather have people write her as getting hit by a bus.

Hi Crow! If you're still doing the ask game, could I get a few for Lady Maria?

7. Does the character’s age matter to you?
Maria’s age is actually something I had to consider when writing my fic because she looks pretty young in the Nightmare, but her being related to Annalise could have affected her aging, you know? Anyway, I settled on her being 16 when she came to Byrgenwerth, 21 when the Fishing Hamlet happened, and around 36-38 when she died. So yeah, I suppose her age matters to me when I’m trying to decide a timeline, but on a more shallow plane of thought….no, I wouldn’t mind if she were an old lady or quite a bit younger x)
27. Do you like to ship this character with other characters or do you prefer not to?
I did briefly like the appeal of her and Ludwig, but I never fully ran with it. I’m not much of a shipper and I’m more interested in Maria’s familial and potentially platonic relationships. I also like to headcanon that she was just too depressed to pursue relationships in general. Maybe she had a few flings from the pubs over the years lmao, but nothing serious. Just brief bouts of comfort. Yet even that feels too far against how I see her, so I’m not sure.
49. What’s your favorite personality trait in this character?
Her obvious contradictory nature and possible guilt complex, I think. I like how she is both violent and gentle, a walking schism. She wants to be free from the weight of her sins but she continues to desperately conceal them. This is too real and believable. It’s my favorite aspect of her character and I love how it clearly stems from overwhelming guilt and shame. Maria has a heart, but she is gripped by fear and can’t face what she’s done. She’s wonderfully messed up.

Cheers to you Catcas!! Always a pleasure to see you in my inbox!
Something that confuses me a little is the idea that because Ted and Rebecca don't get together before he goes back to Kansas, their connection doesn't amount to anything or have an explainable meaning
(I don't need a bunch of notes explaining it to me, it's just not something that makes sense to me 😬)
Because...when you interact with someone you're that connected to, it feels extremely good
It feels good whether or not you're fucking, it feels good whether or not you've been able to articulate what it means yet, it feels good even if the status of your relationship to that person changes over time
And you can tell from Ted and Rebecca's interactions that they feel extremely good when they are in the same place. When you're that connected to someone you can tell that you are! And it feels fucking incredible, and experiencing those sensations is valuable and life-improving
Their ending (their 3x12 ending, which is neither the end of their lives nor the end of their relationship) isn't meaningless; it's sad
