BTS FX shot from Resident Alien season 3 showing how they have stand-ins for the grey aliens who they edit out and then put in the cgi for the greys and general background.

Chris Sheridan and Robert Duncan McNeill also said they didn't just come up with the look of the avian aliens on their own. Instead, they based it on people's claims of their own encounters.

BTW, for those new to the series, the UFO seen in season 2 was based on the founder of Dark Horse Comics own experiences.
