Audio Drama Sunday - 31st March ✨
Here’s what brought me joy this week!
👻 @tellnotalespod (S2E6.5) Eeeeek listening to that phone call was physically painful. Ugh, I know Leo is in the wrong but, Julia, girl, your stubbornness (affectionate) isn’t going to fix this. I worry that Riley is going to get really sick before the narrative boinks their heads together enough for them to fix it.
🌲 @hellofromthehallowoods (145) FATHERS!! At least poly family real, even if Polly family isn’t!!! I have a number of theories about the passengers on this boat and I will share my most bizarre one without context - Ralph is not Riot’s dad?? I think that everyone aboard that ship is looking for something or someone and I am crossing my fingers for certain storms ahead…. Have I mentioned that I love this so much?
👁️ @malevolentcast Intermezzo - oh my god, that is CRUEL and wicked and awful and I loved every second.
🏛 @the-mistholme-museum (ROUTED) Oh no!! The HoRet :((( I love seeing mistholme come into its power, you little fairy shits best be afraid!!!
♦️@grottopod (7) Poor David, man. I don’t know how I would have responded to Matt throwing it back in my face that I didn’t know what it’s like to lose someone but it would not have been calm and kinda tender….. (follow him into the cave and deck him, David).
⚔️ @camlannpod (6) What a delightful break from expectations!! I know very little about Odysseus and his whole deal but I *do* know a lot about the power of queer love and friendship so I think we’re onto a winner here!
🍎 @notquitedeadpod (XXIX) whoa, season 3 Alfie is not fucking around and I am so here for it. Let me tell you, I creased at ‘let the funky music do the talking, then’. Neige! I underestimated his pop culture references!! So excited to get balls deep into the vampire science this season ... It really amuses me that getting balls deep into the science is as relevant to the show as sinking one's teeth into the science.
Have a lovely week, everyone!!!

Percy has stated on multiple occasions that he was goth, but never has never specified what subgenre, so I’m making the executive decision that he’s southern gothic. No I will not take criticism.

Grandmother Jeon had left early this morning with the Jeons and Parks in tow. She had pulled you into a tight hug as Dae loaded her suitcases into the trunk.
“You two have a good new year, and if I don’t see you before Spring Break, make sure to call,” Grandmother Jeon instructs as she releases you to hug Jungkook just as tight.
“And you,” she smiles. “Make sure you check the house out before you return to school. I’ll make arrangements for renovations if you want to change anything up. Do what you want with it, okay?”
“Yes, Grandmother Jeon. Thank you,” he says as he hugs her tighter, and she kisses his cheek before releasing him.
“Don’t get into too much trouble tonight while your parents are away,” Grandmother Jeon raises a brow. “I’m gonna be overseas, and your parents are going to be out of town so we can’t bail you out of jail.”
“I’ll keep him in check, Grandmother Jeon,” you promise as you wrap your arm around Jungkook’s waist. His sweater is thicker than yours, and the wind rattles you to the core, but your goodbyes are more important than a few chilly minutes.
“That’s what I like to hear, honey!” Minji laughs. “We’ve got to be tough with these Jeon men!”
“Mom!” Dae calls from the car as he shuts the trunk. “We’re all set.”
Minji smiles again. “You watch out for that Park boy, too. Jimin and that mouth of his. I’m sure I’ll be hearing about tonight from his grandmother. We’re gonna play shuffleboard and find us some dance partners before midnight! Don’t worry about me.”
“Get ‘em, Minji,” you giggle as you hug her one last time, promising to call soon. She waves as she links her arm with Jungkook’s as he walks her out of the house and toward the driveway where his parents wait for them. Luna is buckled in her seat, barking her head off when she finally spots her mother.
Across the street, Jimin is helping his grandmother get into his parents’ car. He waves when he spots you in the doorway, and you grin.
The eight of you had plans to spend the New Year together. The weather was still rough. Snow still covered the streets and you weren’t in the mood to be stuffed in a club like a sardine.
Jungkook had invited everyone over. Jimin, Joon, and Tae would probably walk home, and Seokjin, Hoseok, and Yoongi would either sleep over or go across the street.
The plans for tonight involved games, alcohol, and plenty of food. The home was still decorated for Christmas, and Aera promised to put everything away once she returned. Before you could offer to help, Jungkook shook his head.
“Mom likes to keep them up a little longer. She decorates for Valentine’s Day and so on. We should come back for Halloween. You’d love it.” Jungkook smiled.
“I’m gonna miss her,” you tell Jungkook as he joins you on the front porch. He wraps his arm around your shoulder, kissing your cheek.
“Grandmother Jeon will be fine,” Jungkook assures you. “My parents will be back in a couple of days and then we can go look at the house.”
“It’ll be nice to party with Minji on Spring Break,” you giggle as you head back inside and shut the door after Jungkook.
“If we can keep up,” he chuckles with a shake of his head.
“I’m glad this all worked out, Koo,” you admit as you wrap your arms around his waist. He rubs your back as you rest your head on his chest, listening to the beat of his heart. It soothes you.
“Me too, baby. Otherwise, I would have waited until we got back to school to say something,” He giggles, his nose scrunching the tiniest bit.
You smile, kissing the mole beneath his lip. “Come on, babe. We have the house to ourselves and a few more hours before our friends come over.”
“Oh, and how do you suggest we pass the time, baby?” Jungkook smirks.
“Oh, I don’t know,” you say coyly as you walk two fingers up his broad chest. “I’m sure we can think of something.”
Your laughter fills the home as you take off running toward the stairs with Jungkook right behind you. His laughter and yours grow louder when he catches you and leads you to his bedroom, where you spend the next few hours wrapped up in each other.
Tumblr media
You shouldn’t stare.
You shouldn’t.
You’re not.
Honestly, you’re not.
But you so are!
“Are you part of some male dancer association?” you blurt, covering your mouth with your hands. You did not just say that!
Jimin cackles, shaking his head. “No.”
Seokjin smirks. “Hoseok picked our outfits.”
Your eyes look over at Hoseok, the menace. He smirks when you eye him up and down. He lowers his sunglasses to drown you in his dark look. Fuck, fuck, wow!
“Don’t you look ravishing,” he comments as he sets his sunglasses on his head. “Gotta say, you look just as hot as I imagined.”
“Hoseok!” you giggle, shaking your head.
Hoseok shrugs. “It’s a nice dress. Still had the tags on when I found it in your closet.”
“Has Kook seen it yet?” Seokjin asks as he rakes his eyes over you.
“Not yet,” you explain. “We decided to get ready separately.”
“Oh, he’s gonna die,” Jimin chuckles as he walks past you to the kitchen, where Yoongi finished cooking the food.
Alcohol fills the refrigerator and the counters. Jimin has a bottomless stomach when it comes to alcohol, and Tae always tries to keep up.
You’re excited to see Jungkook, but after the stunt Hoseok pulled, you’re not so sure you could handle it.
“Darling,” Jungkook calls from the stairs.
Hoseok chuckles as he watches you turn around slowly, gasping when you spot Jungkook.
Jungkook’s dark hair is coiffed in a slicked-back manner. The blazer is too big for his frame, but the black mesh shirt hugs him in all the right places, showing off his taut chest and ripped abs. Silver jewelry adorns his ears, neck, and hand, but what you really love is the one pierced into his bottom lip.
You swear your brain malfunctions as it does for SpongeBob when all he needs to remember is fine dining. You don’t think you could even remember your name right now if somebody asked because all you can think is how fucking hot your boyfriend looks. You don’t even think you’re breathing, your voice caught in your throat as your eyes take in every delicious inch of his body.
Were you two alone, you’d have him beneath you already. His chest would get covered in your lipstick, and his cock would be inside you, making you cream around him as you bounced on him.
Jungkook isn’t faring much better. The dress you’re wearing leaves little to the imagination. He’s breathless as he admires your radiance. The smile on your face is bashful but directed right at him.
Jungkook should send Hoseok a personalized thank you note after this trip. Perhaps even a bouquet of peonies, freshly picked from a field they visited as children not too far from their home. He knows Hoseok wishes he had more time to make something for you. He’s very talented, and no doubt would create amazing clothing for each of you if given the chance. Jimin wore a suit made just for him, a gift for his birthday just a few months ago.
Smirking, Jungkook takes the last step as he eyes the necklace sitting perfectly on your chest. It’s on a thin gold chain with his initial. There’s an accompanying one on your thigh that glimmers in the light when you move toward him, the slit on your dress dangerously high up, and your heels click on the floor as you meet him.
“You look gorgeous,” Jungkook whispers when you grab his suit jacket. He notes how you bat your lashes, eyes sparkling when you look at him.
“And you look good enough to eat,” you respond, not noticing how your friends give you a moment alone.
To be honest, Hoseok was a little worried you’d jump each other in front of everyone. You wouldn’t lie.  The thought had crossed your mind.
“Do I?” Jungkook smiles as he cups your face. His lips look very tempting as he toys with his lip ring.
What you wouldn’t give to strip him naked where he stands. The thought alone sends a tingle down your spine as his fingers move downward to the necklace you’re wearing.
“Perhaps there’s something I can do about that later on,” he whispers as he releases the initial and locks eyes with you. You blink, left breathless as his gaze locks you in place.
Should you take him to his room? Forget all about the evening planned with your friends and welcome the new year tangled in sheets, his name on your lips, and his hands on your hips.
“If you guys are gonna fuck, can you do it somewhere else?” Namjoon asks with a brownie in one hand and a champagne flute in the other.
Jungkook chuckles as he steps away from you. He takes your hand in his and leads you to your friends in the kitchen.
It’s no surprise that Jimin’s already got the alcohol open. Yoongi turns the stove off and moves a pot off of the eye before calling everyone for dinner.
The dining room is filled with laughter. Joy spreads from one person to the next as the alcohol and fond memories flow.
Taehyung and Yoongi suggest moving the party to the living room. The table gets cleared by Seokjin and a tipsy Namjoon, who’s had too many brownies and flutes of champagne.
Hoseok has cleared the living room coffee table and set the liquor and glasses on it. Each of you has a different glass straw to not get confused, but you know you’ll end up sharing with Jungkook and possibly Jimin by the end of the night.
The TV is on in the background, a show on mute as they prepare for the new year. The countdown flashes on the screen, still two hours away.
Fireworks blast off outside from the neighbors and their kids. Despite the cold weather, gatherings still take place.
Jimin smirks when you take a seat on the couch beside Jungkook. Your hand rests on his thigh, and Jungkook toys with the small chain on your leg.
“How about we start with body shots?” Jimin suggests, feigning innocence when his eyes connect with yours.
Jungkook scoffs. “As if, Park.”
Jimin chuckles. He knows Jungkook well enough to know when he’s pissed him off.
“Don’t worry,” Seokjin giggles. “We won’t do it off your girl.”
“Already making him mad?” Yoongi asks as he sets down a bowl of perfectly cut limes for the tequila. Yoongi normally sticks to whiskey and Tae and Jimin love tequila. Hoseok and you loved cocktails, and Jungkook and Seokjin will have what’s available. Namjoon keeps a flute of champagne in his hand most of the night, sipping in between sweets.
“Can we just drink already?” Taehyung pouts as he eyes the bottle of tequila sitting untouched on the coffee table. “Please?”
Everyone laughs as they open bottles. Yoongi sits in a recliner with a glass of whiskey in his hand as the music plays from a speaker on the mantel.
Hoseok sits on the loveseat, a sketchbook in his lap as he watches you. He’d have to get your measurements later, perhaps in a few days or once you return to campus before the semester gets too busy for everyone. He’d like to make something for you and Jungkook. Perhaps matching outfits if time allows, but if not, matching accessories are just as good. After all, nothing is better than a gift given from the heart.
An hour l and a half later, everyone is giddy and tipsy. Seokjin, Jimin, Taehyung, and Namjoon play cards on the floor. They grow louder, and curses and groans of dissatisfaction escape them when Seokjin lays down his winning hand.
Yoongi hums along to the song playing, and Hoseok puts the finishing touches on his sketch.
Jungkook has shed his suit jacket, as have most of your friends. The fireplace roars brightly after getting started by Jungkook and Yoongi.
Hoseok insisted everyone pose for pictures for his Polaroid camera, which caused Taehyung to ask everyone to pose for him.
“Memories,” he had said with a stern look. “Precious memories that you will thank me for twenty years down the line when your kids ask how you spent your first New Year's Eve.”
It was hard to say no after that.
The countdown seems to fly by once you’re done taking photos. Jimin and Taehyung demand one more shot before heading outside to watch the fireworks and ring in the new year.
“Oh, come on,” Jimin chuckles. “One body shot.”
You laugh. “I’ll do it off Koo if he’ll let me.”
Jungkook nods, eager to get your hands on his body. He’s been pretty tame due to company but he’s been eyeing you all night, wanting to get you alone to kiss you as much as he wants.
He hopes he can see you in that dress again when both of you are completely sober. He clears his throat as he lies on the couch after removing his mesh shirt. He’s done a good job of covering the hickeys left on his torso from your past few romps.
You kneel in front of him while Jimin shoves a lime wedge in Jungkook’s mouth.
“Lick around his belly button,” Yoongi instructs with a cheeky grin.
“You guys are the worst,” you grumble.
“You can back out whenever,” Seokjin assures you. “No judgment.”
Taehyung’s nods. “I’ll do a shot off Seokjin next if it’ll help.”
“No,” Seokjin huffs. “The last time you let it go down into my underwear.”
Taehyung shrugs. “I would have gotten it.”
Seokjin blushes. “Shut up.”
“Can we do this before we miss the clock striking twelve?” Hoseok frowns.
“Okay, okay,” Jimin says as you lick around Jungkook’s navel. Yoongi puts some salt around the circle and moves out of the way.
“Come on, Seokjin,” Jimin says as he moves to the older man to get his shirt off.
“Wait, you were serious,” he laughs as he takes his shirt off, and the friends get distracted for a moment while they tease him.
You do your shot seamlessly, kissing Jungkook’s hip before moving toward the lime wedge. You grimace when it touches your tongue, and you spit it out into a napkin.
“Ugh, that never goes down easy for me,” you complain as you get on your feet.
Namjoon and Yoongi have left to fill flutes with champagne in the kitchen while Seokjin put his shirt back on.
“Get your coats on,” Taehyung claps as he starts handing coats to your friends. Jungkook gets off the couch, turning around to grab his shirt when your friends freeze, and you cover your face with your hands.
“Geez,” Jimin said your name in between bouts of laughter. “Did you have to maul him?”
“Oh, lord,” you murmur into your hands as your face grows hot.
“What?” Jungkook asks as he puts his shirt back on and then his jacket.
“Keep your shirt on around your parents,” Taehyung giggles.
“Unless you want them to see the claw marks on your back,” Seokjin cackles as he leads his friends toward the door.
“I’m so sorry,” you apologize, mortified. “Does it hurt? Oh, fuck. I’m sorry.”
“Darling, it’s fine,” Jungkook assures you. “I asked for it, remember? I kept asking you to do it harder and harder?”
You bite your lip, nodding. Jungkook grins, kissing your lips.
“Maybe tomorrow we can do it again?” Jungkook kisses your cheek as he leads you to the door to get your coat. He helps you into it before you join your friends on the porch.
Jimin hands you a flute, and Yoongi hands one to Jungkook.
Hoseok nearly jumps in his spot as he counts down from thirty.
Giddiness fills your body as you look at your friends. When all of this first started you never imagined feeling joy like this. True friendship that would last a lifetime surrounded you; and included you.
Jungkook’s hand goes to your hip as he pulls you closer. The wind is brutal but the fireworks burst with color in the air, and their beauty makes being cold worth it.
“3! 2! 1!”
“Happy New Year!”
You smile brightly as you raise your flute with your friends, taking a sip before Jungkook’s lips are on yours.
A new year, a new chance to make wonderful memories with the man beside you.
Nothing could be better than this.

Fandom Manifesto: Hello From The Hallowoods
(Originally written for the Fandomanifesto community on Pillowfort.)
Here's a (mostly spoiler-free) fandom manifesto for my favorite podcast, Hello From The Hallowoods. (Please try to keep the comments on this post spoiler-free as well.)
What is a fandom manifesto?
Inspired by ship manifestos, a fandom manifesto is an essay meant to introduce people to a fandom and promote it by explaining its appeal. It's a really fun tradition that I would love to keep going.
What is Hello From The Hallowoods?
Darker than your dreams, and farther North than you remember, there is a forest where life and death meet…
Hello From The Hallowoods is a queer horror podcast written and produced by William A. Wellman (they/them). This is the official description (taken from Spotify):
Come walk between the black pines! In this award-winning queer fiction podcast, a cosmic narrator follows the increasingly connected residents of the forest at the end of the world. It's a bittersweet story that explores queer identity, horror genre tropes, and finding hope in humanity's last moments.
It's set in a forest in northern Canada (the Hallowoods) in a post-apocalyptic world plagued by the black rains. The story follows the inhabitants of the Hallowoods—only some of whom are alive and human—as their lives become increasingly interconnected.
The podcast is narrated by Nikignik (he/they), also known as One Hundred Eyes in the Dark, an eldritch god who speaks directly to the listener via their nightmares. He begins to tell these stories because he's grieving his partner, another god called Marolmar (he/him), and humans were the last thing Marolmar created. Over time, Nikignik changes from a more passive narrator to an active character in the story.
There are a lot of characters, including but not limited to:
a nonbinary Frankenstein's creature piercing together their identity
a trans ghost dealing with his occultist father
an invisible man finding love at first sight
a genderfluid storm witch trying to prove themself
a retired rockstar and her punk butch lesbian daughter
a floral-suit-wearing demon on a celestial audit of earth
a starwolf on a mission to kill said demon
a killer robot skull and his pet dead seagull
an unkindness of ravens (yes, they are one character)
… and many, many more.
How scary is it?
It's a horror podcast, so there are some scary moments, but for me, the story feels very comforting and bittersweet as it explores horror tropes in a really unique way. According to the website:
It's been described as a show that helps you sleep easier, rather than one that keeps you up at night.
The story also explores themes like religious trauma, isolation, death, grief, and queerphobia, so please check the content warnings at the end of each episode description or at the start of each episode transcript. Transcripts are available on the website.
Why should I listen to it?
If the description above didn't convince you, here are some more reasons why you should listen to Hello From The Hallowoods.
There is so much content! I often complain about books being almost always standalones or duologies lately and TV seasons only being 8-10 episodes. If I really like something, I want to spend as much time with it as possible!
With HFTH, I don't have that problem because there is so much to listen to! There are currently (almost) 150 episodes available (plus a few live shows and bonus episodes), and new episodes come out every Wednesday. There are also weekly 100-word bonus stories on Patreon, and a tie-in novel called One Hundred Eyes In The Dark is currently in the works, so if you're looking for a story you can get really invested in (or if you're angry that all your favorite shows have been canceled), HFTH is perfect for you!
There are so many queer characters, disabled characters, and characters of color! If you're looking for a really diverse show, you will love HFTH. (I cried when I heard a character describe herself as aromantic.) But even aside from the diversity, the characters are just amazing. I mean, "What if Frankenstein's creature got love and support and was an absolute cinnamon roll?" is the perfect character concept. The villains are also really compelling and well-written.
It's a great introduction to podcasts, especially for book lovers, because it often feels like a very immersive audiobook! The voice acting and music are incredible, and even though there are a lot of characters, you can tell them apart very easily by their voices. If you like fantasy and horror books, this could be your introduction to the world of audio dramas.
That being said, if you have listened to other horror podcasts before, you will still love this one! It sometimes reminds me of Welcome To Night Vale, but the setting and characters are very unique, and the writing is so, so beautiful.
It's also a great introduction to horror! I used to avoid horror media because I get scared very easily, but horror podcasts (and especially Hello From The Hallowoods) made me discover how much I actually enjoy horror. HFTH explores horror tropes in such a kind, unique, and hopeful way, and as sappy as that sounds, listening to it makes the horrors of everyday life a little easier to deal with.
If you like Malevolent (another really great horror podcast), Harlan Guthrie has a guest role in HFTH! You might also recognize Mx. Wellman's voice from other podcasts like WOE.BEGONE, The Silt Verses or Old Gods of Appalachia.
The fandom is amazing! Everyone is so kind and talented, and we always have a lot of fun theorizing about what will happen next. There's even a fan-run Discord server!
We also have a fan wiki, and in addition to the official information, we also have a "fun gender" for each character. Here are some of my favorites:
Tumblr Sexyman (Official)
Eye-Affiliated Podcast Host
Deer that will fuck you up
Whatever the hell was going on with the guy from Shape Of Water
Nightmare Personality
Hot Topic Goth
Dilf Automobile
How do I listen to it?
You can listen to Hello From The Hallowoods on the podcatcher of your choice. Here are some suggestions from the Hallowoods website:
Spotify
Apple Podcasts
Podbean
YouTube
Google Podcasts
It's not an anthology, so please listen to it from the beginning to see how the different characters and plot threads come together.
The show is entirely ad-free and sponsor-free, so if you like it and want to financially support it, please consider joining the show’s Patreon.
And that's it! There are many things I didn't include for spoiler reasons, but this should give you a basic idea of what HFTH is about and why I love it so much.
I hope I convinced you to listen to Hello From The Hallowoods, and maybe you will love it as much as I do!

begging audio drama fans, especially people who like the eye podcasts™️ (tma, wtnv, malevolent) and other people who like queer horror podcasts, to listen to Hello From The Hallowoods. it's incredible. it's written, produced and narrated all by one person, William A. Wellman, and they do an incredible job at it !
the best way I can describe hfth is a big warm hug, though sometimes the hug is a bit too tight and it might hurt a bit, but it'll loosen up again soon and be that familiar warm hug again. every episode, you are greeted by Nikignik, who will tell you about the stories of the humans, monsters and other beings who reside in the Northern Hallowoods. the cast of characters is huge and I have so much love for (almost) every single one of the characters. there's a lot of diversity and so, so much queer joy <3
season 4 starts at the end of this month, so there's still some time to catch up :] (if you do, let me know what you think !!! I would love to talk about hfth with anyone)

ok this is kind of a dumb thing but I wanted to get it out so whatever-
I have ADHD. More importantly, I love fiction podcasts. They are My Thing. I love listening to them and talking about them and drawing characters from them and reading/writing fan fiction about them. I'm the fiction podcast person in all my friend groups. For the past few months I've specifically been hyperfixating on a podcasts called Hello from the Hallowoods. I love it. So much. (also, there are a lot of canonically trans/genderqueer characters in it so yay for representation) It's basically become part of how my brain functions at this point, if you looked in my head, you would see hfth. The thing with hfth is that it has a REALLY small fandom. Like- one of the main characters is tagged in one fic on ao3 and I wrote it. It bothers me a little bit, but I'm managing becauase this is my favourite hyperfixation that I've had.
But I've been listening to The Adventure Zone a lot lately. And I've been thinking about it A LOT. TAZ has a WAY bigger fandom than hfth and there is actually like- fanart of all my favourite characters and stuff. But I'm scared of my hyperfixation changing? It's happened a good bit before, but usually I'm ready for the change when it comes, I'm not really for this one to change.
It's kind of trivial, but this mean a lot to me (thanks for listening to me rant about podcasts)
-Isaac
Hey kiddo!! Those sound awesome!!! I really should listen to more podcasts, thank you so much for the recommendations and for sharing them with me!

Nevermind, I'm not done ranting about HFTH tonight
I just finished episode 81 and I'm crying a little bit and am ready to cry a lot more.
First of all, I've been desperately trying to find this post lately but I can't but it was someone who said something about episode 82 or 83 I think? made them cry more than MAG 200. And... I just can't. I'm so afraid it's not even funny, but here I am and I'm like, "Are you sure 81 isn't supposed to be the sad one?!?!"
Nikignik's Outro:
I was so ready for just a chill little outro but then they pause suddenly in the middle of a sentence for like a minute straight and then just say, "This is not easy."
Like oh my gosh, Nikignik, my heart can't take this today, but then they sound like they're so close to crying (which they do a decent bit, honestly, but same, and it still gets me every time).
And when they said, "It should be easy, none of these people actually effect me and I shouldn't care about them. I've seen so many species end but it still hurts." (paraphrased but still MY HEART BROKE)
One, I still stand by my statement that Nikignik is a depression reference/symbol. Two, I see myself in Nikignik.
I care too much about these people in the Hallowoods, and I've listened to audio dramas before and it never gets easier (cue my dramatic being depressed over Hector's death earlier) and technically they're not even real but I love them all so much and I just can't????? Oh my gosh I didn't want an existential crisis tonight but maybe it's what I needed????
The very end of the outro reminds me of my day to day struggles and how even though everything seems like it's just going downhill, we have to keep moving on, and pick ourselves back up and put ourselves back together.
"Nevertheless, I will continue, in the hope that it will get better, somehow. That these vestiges of darkness will melt in the light of some new sun. That there is still a reason to fight." - Nikignik (Oh my GOSH this is so beautiful but also I'm crying but also I feel this in my SOUL)
Then they use trepidatiously as their fancy -ly adverb in the last sentence and I always love a good use of the word trepidation. :)
But then I looked ahead to the next episode, 82: Polly, Clara, and Moth. Two of my favorites (and I love you, too, Clara and the rest of Downing Hill) and the theme is Failures.
I'm really scared and really sad but also really comforted for some reason??? I didn't realize I needed someone to tell me about grief and depression and always moving forward in the hopes that things will get better but I guess I did???
Anyway, hopefully things get happier lol. You can't have light without the dark.

Between listening to episodes 75-82 of HFTH, watching the new episode of Spooky Month, and the new episode of Murder Drones, I've taken a lot of emotional damage today, and my ears are ringing

Now that The Owl House is over you may be wondering, "What the hell do I do with myself now?"
Do you enjoy horror?
Do you enjoy stories with many queer characters?
Do you enjoy watching evil old white men who happen to be both christian fanatics and abusive parents get what's coming to them?
Do you hate capitalism?
...and do you like podcasts?
Then boy do I have a series for you!
Hello From The Hallowoods is a post apocalyptic/horror following multiple interconnected storylines about a large cast of queer characters living (mostly) in a mysterious forest after the end of the world. It's also about love, grief, identity and family (found and otherwise). It's also about how while killing people is bad, and if you can you should always give everyone a chance or at least treat them like a person, sometimes you have to kill a motherfucker, for everyone's sake, which I imagine is an idea that will appeal to a lot of toh fans.
...basically what I'm saying is please listen to hfth it's sooooo good 🥺🥺🥺

I finally got around to listening to hfth ep 103 today and.... Wow. That was so good. There are a lot of things I love about this podcast, but Nikignik is one of my absolute favorites. His character/arc is so unique. It’s a masterful writing trick to have your narrator slowly get more and more immersed in his own story, to the point that he starts wanting to take part in it himself. It immerses the audience that much more. I still remember ep 83 (i think?), when riot et al were captured by botco, and Nik ends the episode by going “wait, no...the story wasn’t supposed to go like this...” and the episode just ends there. That actually catapulted my consciousness into another state of being. That despair was so visceral, so tangible, I couldn’t stop feeling it over and over and over again. I can still hear Nik going “No...” in my head in that exact tone even now. And the developments this most recent episode, with him actively taking a part in the story, begging Mort to wake up...again, it’s that extra layer of complete immersion. An extra depth to my emotional response. It’s amazing. I can’t get over it.
Also, the sound design at the end of this episode was incredible.

It isn't until Change of Mind that you really realize just how short staffed Minkowski's mission was.

I listened to Memoria this morning while getting ready for work which was a terrible decision cause it's difficult to put make up on while you're crying.
I just want to say the idea of Pryce inputting a core thought meant to tear Hera down, that runs every time she does anything, and the idea of "giving them my own voice" so the thought is indistinguishable from her own, really fuckin hits me in the mommy issues.
I think one of the coolest things they did with Hera as an A.I. was to create a computer metaphor for some aspects of human psychology; that a self-defeating thought is implanted in someone by another person that occurs at runtime every time.
That a small, single line of "code" recited subconsciously before every thing we do effects our whole systems.
That we need to know it's there to cope and work around it.
It's just very, very good. I like it a lot.

Wolf 359 is just so good I will never be over it. That whole sequence at the end of episode 28 when they've just pulled the Hephaestus station into a stable orbit, Eiffel is in Lovelace's shuttle detached from the station and drifting very slowly, and he convenes with Minkowski in the medical lab where he gets suddenly interrupted by Lovelace flatlining?
And after a moment of the drama of trying to get Lovelace's heart beating again, the last thing we hear from him is, "Diiiiiiiiid....... was thaaaaaaaaat......??" and then the shuttle explodes?
Just amazing.
I love the flow of the scene and the tension. I love the voice acting. I love that we're hit with two more crises while still exhausted from the cost of narrowly escaping the last one. It's a bunch of emotional beats all in a row.
I literally dream of being this good at writing.

I’m 25 episodes into Hello from the Hallowoods and I have decided I really like it. Here are some reasons why:
Lots of queer characters at lots of different ages and lots of different stages.
Some of the older characters are just beginning to engage with their queerness and it’s so sweet.
An asexual character!
I appreciate that the writer just threw in anything that seemed fun to them. Eldritch deities? Demons? Spirits? Doll zombies? Punk rock stars? Elemental mages? Capitalism trying to persevere after the apocalypse? Evangelism? All yes, and that’s goals tbh. I wish I could capture that energy.
Consistently the best openers I’ve ever heard.
Fuck, even the eldritch narrator is queer.
The particular way that death shows up as a theme here is really interesting. Death as a lingering consciousness, or a continuation, rather than an emptiness or an end.
Even though they’re mostly all the same voice actor and it’s basically the narrator reading a story to you, there are distinct enough voices for most of the characters that you can tell who is who even without the cues.
My fave audio drama villain archetype, the creepy evil boss, literally thinks she can take on an eldritch god and win. I’m so, so into it.
Water as giving life... especially after death.
Ahhh I recommend giving it a try if you like audio dramas.

My #1 post of 2022
Cutter's "recruitment" of Eiffel is such an interesting interaction because until this point, with the exception of Hera, everyone else's sign on has not been so deeply resisted.
Hera AND Eiffel are not thrilled to take Cutter's deal, in fact they really have no other choice.
But Eiffel's scene is the first time we've ever heard Cutter struggle to control someone. He doesn't have the same tools he had with Hera.
It's the first time we hear someone laugh at Cutter, set a hard boundary with him, and literally call him a motherfucker to his face!
I'm also trying to think if anyone else aside from Hera ever really caught on to Cutter. Eiffel literally likens him to Patrick Bateman (American Psycho).
And I really feel like Cutter's agitation is palpable in his silence before he cuts Eiffel off with, "okay, okay! before you say any more things I'm going to make you regret..."
Like, Cutter still successfully lands the hook by making promises about what Goddard can do about supporting his daughter, but THAT MOMENT OF PEAK TENSION!!!!!! And only after Eiffel has been bought into it does he fall in line with the hierarchy and switch to calling Cutter, "sir."

Hello Mx. Wellman! Apologies if you've discussed this already, but I've been talking a lot with my podcast friends about what makes horror, well, horror. For me, shows like the Magnus Archives are horror because they scare me. Malevolent because it disturbs and distresses. But with HFTH.... Honestly, I feel almost comforted when I listen. What made you decide to define HFTH as horror? The themes? The setting? I'm very curious and would love to see your answer! Thank you :)
It attempts to do what most of my favorite horror stories do, which is to take a journey through someplace awful and come out alive on the other side - not always for the thrill of running, but to show that there is indeed an other side.
Because the best horror is driven by its humanity - the scares are part of the ride, but I’d posit it’s the compelling relationships between Jon and Martin or Arthur and John that have made those two shows so adored. And the bad things are worse because they’re happening to characters we’ve come to care about, which is something fundamentally different about the kind of horror fiction podcast that Malevolent or the Silt Verses is versus the kind that Otis Jiry’s Scary Stories Told In The Dark is.
Because queerness and horror have a ripe history together, and it provides a more literal, visceral canvas on which to explore the themes at the heart of the show.
Because I love horror’s long menagerie of monsters and tropes, and when there are as many of them homaged in a work as this one, it would feel silly to call it anything else.
Because genres are a made up marketing apparatus, and like queer labels themselves, it’s not about defining something indescribable so much as choosing the words that feel right and will make sure it reaches the right people.
Because every time someone out there in the world says a story ‘isn’t really horror’, no matter what it is, the bone fairies write me a cheque for one of their teeth to be cashed at a later date.

I just finished HFTH 40 with walt’s funeral and it’s making me feel so many things
Tumblr media
like so often aphobic people can be disheartening to listen to often saying shit like “isn’t ur life empty without romance” or “love is what makes us human” etc etc
but walt meant so much to so many people. and he wasn’t forced to basically justify his identity like so many people do to me when i express being aromantic or asexual and being like there’s other type of love that’s not romantic. basically being forced to justify our orientation to allistic people
and walt didn’t do that. he even pronounced asexual wrong which i think was so funny and so sweet. he meant so much to so many people and seeing that at his funeral is seriously tugging at my heart strings. his identity isn’t treated like a consolation prize or like it’s less than other peoples form of care for other people
he just mattered a lot to people and the community hurts now that he’s gone. and it’s just making me feel so many things 😭
in other words it’s projecting onto walt hours
