i just kinda wanna be ooey gooey about free! for a second.... i always get so sad when ppl who didnt stick with it still harp on it as just being fanservice and “the gay swimming anime” bc like. sure, it is both of those things, but also. you literally cannot deny that the story is something so deeply human and personal and loving.
like, it’s about doing what you love, but making sure it’s good for you, and that it’s what you really want to do. it’s about finding purpose in your life and in the things you enjoy, and the connections you make with other people. and how those connections will forever shape you, for better or for worse, and if you want it to be for the better, you have to put your own foot forward and take it into your own hands.
and it’s about how nothing that you love ever comes to an end. those bonds, those memories, will last forever, and they will always be there to help you.
it was so popular in 2013 when it first aired bc it was “the gay fanservice anime” of the year, but man, the story as a whole... like the actual story is so lovely. and i think it’s such a shame that the general view of it is so closed-minded because the general public didn’t stick with it past season 1. allow the love and whimsy of unshakeable friendship into your heart!!!

Bro, the noise I just made. I literally cannot stand the fanon for Stiles or Derek. It is so so soooo bad, I think these people literally have only seen the 2 hour sterek compilation. Every day I am like "who fucking told you people that Derek never smiles and has no sense of humor?"

like, there's a period of fics that are usually from the s1-2 period that lean pretty hard on derek's dark, brooding and grumpiness from season 1 but of course he was like that. he was going through The Horrors during season 1. he was grieving laura, he was being retraumatized by kate and dealing with scott, stiles and fucking jackson.
he wasn't one dimensional though. his anger was a mask for all the fear, confusion and trying to be in control.
do you know how many fics i've read where people have stiles think about all the apparent physical violence derek has done to stiles as if he's always slamming him into surfaces? way too many to count and it's incorrect. off the top of my head i can count 3 times derek did something like that to stiles. the shove into the wall and slam into the steering wheel in wolf's bane both of which had a point to them. whether or not it was a good emotional response doesn't matter. what matters is that they were not random or part of derek's personality. he didn't just shove stiles into things every time he saw him. the wall shove in s4 with de-aged derek was a deliberate call back to that very instance in wolf's bane. it was literally coupled with the whole cousin miguel bit.
fandom doesn't like to acknowledge that derek hale isn't particularly violent over the course of the show. he hardly even wins the fights he engages in and he is often forced into fights knowing he cannot win.
our boy mostly ends up on the fucking floor.
derek also does make jokes. dry ones usually he thinks they are hilarious too. he thinks he's a funny guy. his dad joke game must've been off the charts, sorry eli.
he and stiles trade barbs a lot and he thinks stiles is funny. stiles amuses him and he indulges it a few times. he shows off to stiles too like a loser.
he likes to fuck with scott and stiles and enjoys taking the piss out of peter. he genuinely enjoyed fucking with liam in s4.
he's not a luddite either. he has a cellphone and we see him use it. i bet he plays games on it. i bet he plays candy crush and words with friends.
and fanon evolved to strip away that stiles is an asshole. he a violent little freak. he threatens people, he expresses regularly his desire to kill people or have them die, he cares about a very small selection of people in his life and if you're not in that circle than god be with your ass because stiles most definitely won't.
he loves and respects his father but this doesn't mean stiles respects the law which is why i don't know why the law enforcement route was chosen for him. stiles hates rules and boundaries. he chafes at them.
stiles casually helps kira and scott break into evidence to get her cell phone. he tells scott's fbi agent father to fuck himself. he got his dad drunk to get access to case files. he copies people's keys. he's a nosy shit.
the whole show started because stiles was a nosy punk kid who wanted to see a dead body.
but i digress.
fanon stiles had a lot of scott's characteristics projected onto him so they could bash scott. i know there's a lot of people who don't like scott which is fine or whatever but there are so many that do it so they can make a pinata out of a character they've extracted all the good points from and give to their favorite little white boy fav.
stiles "i will beat you with a bat" stilinski is a freaky little shit who will bite you.
do you know how hard i laughed when in s3 stiles and isaac genuinely just like could not stand each other? they couldn't be in the same room with out insulting one another and it was the complete opposite of stiles being oh so sensitive to isaac's past and history than straight up in 3b stiles the epitome of insensitive says to isaac something about still milking it (his abuse). stiles is a dick.
i also genuinely have umbrage with the pack mom trope that stiles gets saddled with. the way fandom has oft feminized stiles leaves a bad taste in my mouth too.
derek and stiles are both assholes and i love them very much.

He’s obviously cocky and entitled but it’s in a more spoiled and almost bratty way so he throws his little temper tantrums when he doesn’t get his way… I think s1 has seriously overlooked toxic Rafe potential

im still in my rewatch but the scene where him and topper beat up pope:( this especially hits sooo hard w my pogue reader but i can just imagine that being the cause of your first real fight, like you're so upset he can be that cruel but there goes his manipulation tactics.. telling you he needs to be a proactive man to protect you and his friends and his turf. he's not letting anyone walk all over him, regardless if you like them or not. fucks you until you forget all about your pogue friends, and then you end up bandaging his bloody hand for him.
ooohh and when they go to that movie showing.. can just imagine curling up on a lawnchair with him under a blanket, him n the boys are on high alert for jj and pope but he keeps a tight arm around you, goes and gets you a soda and popcorn which you two share.. you don't want him to leave and you whine when he does.. can just imagine the scene where jj and pope turn back to look at him when kie tells them rafe is right behind them. rafe is staring so hard at them while ur tryna feed him a piece of popcorn. (gay Mike rambling time bc I want to work on the analysis but also I’m in bed and tired soooo.)
no bc why set it up so that El was repeatedly paralleled to Will in season 1 to the point of looking so much like him that she was mistaken for him if not because Mike’s always been in love with Will + was projecting his feelings for Will onto El?? Like as a character, El in s1 works perfectly for the setup of “mike is gay and is (not intentionally/consciously) projecting his feelings for Will onto El and trying to deal with heteronormative pressure” because El in s1 has lived in a lab her whole life AND hasn’t gotten a chance to figure out who she is as an individual, which makes her easier for Mike to project onto.
This is part of why we see more tension between mike and El as the seasons go on: mike can’t project his feelings for Will onto her anymore because a.) she’s grown into her own unique individual, b.) mike is becoming more aware of his own feelings, his own sexuality, the implications of those feelings, and what he does/doesn’t like or is/isn’t attracted to, making it difficult for him to subconsciously project onto El even if she didn’t develop more of her own identity and c.) El becomes more and more stereotypically feminine looking as the seasons go on and it’s not a coincidence/accident that as El becomes more stereotypically feminine looking, Mike has more difficulty being romantically affectionate with her (things like kissing).
We see Mike initiate the kiss in s1, because a.) heteronormative pressure and that’s the typical “role” of a man in a heteronormative relationship, being expected to “take charge,”/lead something that Mike is already expected to do in his daily life (@/madwheelerz made a great post about Mike and independence recently) and b.) El has less of her own identity, making her easier to project onto, AND she looks more stereotypically masculine.
Like even at the snow ball or during the s3 makeout scenes, El is the one initiating the kisses. El is the one leaning in while mike stays mostly in his own space. Mike takes her hands off of him. During the second s3 kissing scene, El is the one holding Mike’s face in her hands while mike literally just sits there. Even though he’s still BEING affectionate with El as time goes on + as she develops her own identity + looks more stereotypically feminine, we literally see him become more and more uncomfortable with it, especially during that last s3 kiss scene.
And I know this is from the s3 script so I’m not relying on it bc I’m going to focus on what’s in the *show* as the main parts of my gay Mike analysis, but the fact that in the script, mike thinks “what’s wrong with me?” after El kisses him is very interesting to me.
It’s not his first kiss! Its not even his first kiss with El! It’s not that he’s not used to kissing! And like I’m gonna talk about, it’s not because a.) he’s fully realized that he’s into men or b.) just realized he isn’t into El specifically anymore: imo it only makes sense if Mike has realized throughout the course of s3 that he isn’t into girls at all. He’s not thinking “oh gee i don’t like kissing” or “oh wow i wish I was kissing men” or “i don’t like kissing El” or “Why did El do that? That was gross” or “what’s wrong with El, that was so weird”

He’s thinking “what’s wrong with me?“ because it’s NOT ABOUT EL!!!! Like I’ve said in other posts, the big thing for me abt gay Mike is that it removes El from the equation in a good way because Mike’s behaviour isn’t ABOUT HER, it’s not about who she is as a person or what she does or how she looks as a girl. It’s about him being gay and not being attracted to her because of that. Like i just don’t buy that Mike just fell out of love with El/is choosing Will over her, because a.) they’ve incorporated so many fundamental cracks into the foundations of this relationship from the beginning, b.) it doesn’t align with a satisfying arc for el’s character, somebody who has consistently felt unloveable and would then be learning that Mike fell out of love with her because of who she is or what she looks like or just anything about HER, and pits Will and El against eachother, and c.) mike has TRIED to love her. He does love her platonically. He does care about her!! He’s just not attracted to her romantically.
Like, if mike isn’t gay, and just isn’t in love with El anymore because there’s something that he doesn’t like about her looks or where personality (and if he “just likes Will better,” that STILL means that there’s something about El that he seems to be ‘worse’ when compared to Will’s qualities, not that it’s wrong or bad for him to think that, it’s totally fair to not like aspects of people, but again, these are characters with arcs and themes and imo it doesn’t align with el’s arcs and themes or Mike’s or the way that the willel dynamic has been setup), then what girl IS he going to be in love with.
Seriously, if mike isn’t gay, and if Will isn’t an option, but he’s just seemingly fallen out of love with El/there’s something about her that he doesn’t like, then what girl would he like? What would he possibly change about El, somebody that he already CLEARLY cares about deeply and doesn’t want to hurt and has tried to love?? What girl could possibly fit what he’s looking for?? None of them! Because he’s not looking for a girl at all.
It’s not about falling out of love with El. It’s not even about his love for Will. It’s about how over the course of the seasons, especially in s3, mike has been becoming aware of his lack of attraction to women, and also learning what attraction is/what it’s supposed to be like, and what he does and doesn’t like (I’m gonna talk about his in the analysis, but the s3 max and El “How do i know what I like” scene also applies to mike!! Because right before that scene, mike says that he ‘doesn’t know what he’s looking for/asks what they’re even looking for’ in regards to shopping in the mall. But just like how El’s scene isn’t just about knowing what clothes she likes, but rather about what she likes as a whole and who she is and her identity, Mike is also trying to figure out what he likes/what he’s looking for, beyond the scope of looking for a gift in the mall and instead in terms of what he likes/what he’s looking for in regards to his sexuality/romance/relationships.)
And the big thing that makes this point towards gay Mike for me is that it’d be one thing if we saw Mike having more active romantic inclinations towards guys in s3. But we don’t, not in the same way that we see his realization of his lack of attraction to girls develop. And so, if Mike’s spent all of this time kissing El, and trying to figure out what he likes, then that doesn’t add up to just “mike figured out that he likes men,” because I think that’s more of what’s happening in s4,is mike coming to terms with his attraction to men, like even though we do get bits of him moving towards attraction to men in s3, the main thing in s3 is mike realizing his lack of attraction to women.
That’s the thing, too, part of what interests me about the sauna scene: is that the old dudes are portrayed as “gross,” because to be fair, a bunch of old half naked dudes is gonna be gross to any 14 year old kid, but also, it’s not a direct parallel to the lingerie scene, because the lingerie scene is something that’s typically intended to be attractive, it’s framed in that way. So, they don’t give us a “mens underwear” scene to parallel the women’s underwear scene and show that Mike’s “figuring out what he likes” is just him figuring out that he also likes men. Instead, they give us that womens’ underwear scene to demonstrate that he’s realizing his lack of attraction to women, even when the women/the underwear are presented in a “pretty,” meant-to-be-attractive way, and then give us the sauna scene, which like i said is not a direct equivalent to the womens’ underwear scene, even though the scenes are PARALLELED, they are not EQUAL. Because the sauna scene is framed as being “gross” regardless of sexuality, just like how Will is also freaked out by it, it’s not framed in an “attractive” way in the same way that the womens’ underwear scene is, and part of that is due to how the scene works to tie into Mike’s internalized homophobia and bits of disgust with himself in s3, and part of it is also because Mike’s whole ‘figuring out what I like’ journey in the mall and in s3 in general isn’t about him realizing that he’s into men: it’s about him realizing that he’s not into women.
And I have a lot more to say abt the sauna scene and the fact that mikes the one holding rhe door open and some really interesting facial expression choices that Finn makes even after the door is closed, but I’ll save that for the analysis!

Ok so I have my own thoughts and little tidbits about the designs soooo hehehe!!
Don:
I LOVEEE designing jester outfits I had to give him the whole fit
Spades motif because spades represent rebellion, transformation, and acceptance. Since he was the first d-gang member we saw be redeemed-ish I thought it’d fit
Trident from s3 :)
Richard:
Adapted his s1 design, slicked his hair back bcs Nick would wear his down/forward. I didn’t want to give him the cowboy design he had in s3 because although it’s cool I also don’t think he’d want to continue being like Nick when by then he’s come into his own identity as a person
Diamonds motif for hard-working, growth, and hidden depths, but also diamonds are one of the lower classes and Richard was a grunt man for Duni
Dashlie:
Similar to Richard where I adapted her s1 fit, I think she’d experiment more with fashion though and end up with a more alternative style compared to Ashlie’s preppier one
Clubs motif for hotheaded, recklessness, and strength. Like diamonds it’s lower in the ranking
She has a scar through her right eye, mainly due to the 100th episode, she has a mechanical eye and you’d sooner catch her DEAD for the hundredth time than going near an eyepatch and end up being compared to Duni
Duni:
Tried to give him a warmer, cozier look. I have a good amount of headcanons about Duni, one of which being he isn’t actually a clone of Uni but was just so obsessed with him he kept resetting the world, doing whatever it would take for him to fall in love with him, and slowly became more and more like him in an attempt to have him love him more
Mostly based on his s3 design but take off the eyepatch and give him his regular eyes and it’s just what I imagine for his s1 design
Hearts motif for romance, dependance, and passion
DDawn:
Very fancy man, his design doesn’t change much from season to season other than him getting more banged up so this is a s1 design and then in later seasons his clothes are more torn and his screen cracked
Instead of a card suit he gets the “A” for ace, the most powerful card in any suit. This is mostly to represent how he planned to kill Duni and take the wish for his own, he was the last living D-Gang member

I mean s1 was deffo better than s2 but why do you say that it wasn't good? /gen
mannn honestly it would take ages to enumerate all my problems with it but these are the main ones
just a massive, massive tone problem. this show just has no clue what it wants to be and it's bad as hell as a result. the wilderness scenes in this season had some of the darkest stuff of anything in the show (eating jackie + shauna miscarriage + shauna beating lottie) and having all that next to like... misty's quirky reddit boyfriend just absolutely defanged it. the show doesn't want to commit to being either a quirky mystery/comedy or a gritty survival horror and because of that it fails to effectively be anything at all
misty's reddit boyfriend in general just sucked so bad. like what was that
the escalation from 'we're hungry' to 'let's draw cards and murder whoever gets the wrong one' occurred over the span of ONE EPISODE. one SINGLE episode without ANY NEGOTIATION. literally not one single scene of the characters even TALKING about it before it happened. what a joke. what an absolute joke. they had an entire season to build to it how'd they fuck it up this bad
this is a problem I had with the first season as well but the survival threat feels so told and not shown. like we're told all these characters are Soooo Hungry but none of them are ever actually like. fatigued. or ill. or Dying. like how the fuck is coach ben still alive man. it just makes the escalation to killing people that much more abrupt and the whole situation seem so contrived when it doesn't actually feel like they're in danger
just in general the show like. refuses to let any of its characters feel anything at all. shauna straight up killed an innocent man that she was having an affair with last season and the extent of the emotional fallout of that act is her making quirky Oh Whoopsie comments about it. like that would be an insane traumatic thing to go through and you'd think it would be the kind of thing the show would want to explore. but no. not on amc's yellowjackets
on that same topic. shauna beating lottie had weirdly little emotional fallout. like ik they didn't like each other but shauna almost beat lottie to death with her hands and seemed just like. kind of sad and apologetic afterwards. like you'd think that such an act would have some sort of extreme ramifications for her relationship with the group and her own emotional state but nah
in the same vein: this season did adult taissa SO dirty. all the little plot threads that made her story difficult and compelling last season have completely been dropped -- her wife and son were literally written out like 4 episodes in and we don't see any of the emotional complexity of her leaving behind those relationships. additionally the last season ended with her being elected senator (sth that could cause a lot of conflict and drama bc of the increased responsibility on her shoulders + surveillance and scrutiny of her life) and it literally just. never comes up again? like her wife is in a coma and her son is just left fully parentless and she walks away from her job as a US STATE SENATOR and not only are there no consequences she also just literally does not seem to care. I feel like the writers just had no clue what they wanted to do with her and so they just gave her... nothing. no conflict no emotions just nothinggggg
okay they did give her one thing. they gave her an evil alter ego. which is mad corny imo. last season it was weird and ambiguous enough that I enjoyed it but this season it was just so literal and on the nose and I did not enjoy it One Bit
similar to the cards thing lottie deciding that they needed to kill one of them at the end was so damn abrupt and stupid. like literally so pointless and out of nowhere
natalie's death was so silly and contrived that it actually made me laugh

Aesthetically, you have Stede and Aziraphale both looking like posh Blonde White Man Who's Trouble, while Crowley and Ed both got the Edgy Goth aesthetic going on.
By character traits/narrative role, Aziraphale and Stede are the Covert Bastard who can and will be a bitch; they have both long dealt with living in oppressive systems by way of painful compromises and self-repression, always teetering on the edge of desertion and, sooner or later, called to make a choice to disavow those systems for good.
Crowley and Ed are these brilliant and vibrant minds frustrated by hurt, both betrayed in life by a social system outside their control that cast them down without a choice; they take a Flint-style "this ends when I forgive the system, not the other way around" approach to it in that they openly shun the system back, but the original rejection and its cascading effects still left them traumatized and fragile around the matter.
(Then there's all four of these characters being soooo dramatic and such a Theater-Kid-type person, so they all have that in common.)
However, there is a place where the parallels switch, bringing Stede and Crowley far closer on one side, and Aziraphale and Ed closer on the other. And it has to do with the fact that in both these couples there's a character whose job often tends to be Beach, just Beach Husband, just Husband, opposing the other character who's prone to going into High Maintenance Diva / Mermaid With Melancholy modes.
Aziraphale is quite capable of taking care of himself, but he'll literally fold his arms and play princess in the castle waiting for Crowely to rescue him, because Enrichment. He'll do it in life-or-discorporation situations, like when he's about to get guillotined. He'll do it with minor inconveniences - like with the paintball stain, where it's obscenely obvious he's just waiting to be indulged, wants the satisfaction of seeing that Crowley will treat him. He'll pretend he was reading when Crowley comes back from an argument and make Crowley ring a bell to get his attention. "Pleeease, Crowley, do the bullet catch with me even though you've never used a rifle". "Let me take the Bentley while you look after the bookshop". Et cetera. And Crowley takes to all this like a bee to honey. Follows him around the neighborhood, indulges his every caprice, dreams of Alone Time at the Ritz where they can just treat themselves to brunch and, I guess, where he can watch Aziraphale eat some more, which is his idea of this Absolutely Great Activity that just makes his day.
Ed will lean on the helm and sigh like he's Ariel, yes, but it's more than that. Painting the bride cake topper in kajal to look like him sits at the (narratively fucking ingenious) intersection of "I'm making it me because I'm never there, it's never me" and "I'd really like for once for someone to treat me like I'm precious and worthy of pampering" which reflect feelings we've known about since the beginning of s1, at least since he touched the piece of cashmere in Stede's cabin. He also genuinely swings fast between energized/manic and low energy/feelings of hopelessness, and his brain goes Faster Than Yours, and he gets genius-slash-crazy ideas on the reg. When he needed to call to all of his strength he imagined it as a giant sea creature with huge, all-encompassing arms. Florence Welch Big God Behavior. It's a big personality, and you're either enamored with it or not, you're either happy to follow him around basking in it, or you're not strong enough a suitor to his heart and should abandon pursuit. But luckily Stede's also a crazy maniac whose life goal is riding or dying for that in his Boyfriend Era until he can ride or die for that in his Faithful and Realized Husband Era.
So yeah, there's a lot to the dynamic between these duos - more than this, don't get me wrong! - but I'm VERY appreciative of this facet of them that gets all tongue-in-cheek kinda

greg doesn't respond right/enough to your my favourite/I'd marry you, when like you say it's such a confession. so then he's like fight me (entangle our bodies together) fight me fight me (grab me hold me let me grab and hold you) (lay with me wrapped around me). and greg's strong verbal rejection, then tom's "I don't want to either!!!" is soooooo telling so insane crazy so heartbreaking!!!
bro is breaking down about prison and just wants some comfort so goes to his actual favourite and bleeds in front of him trying to connect in the most genuine way he never has before/can. and greg gives him a bashful smile and concern but not the tactile love and passion and touch that he's after.
this man needs to be touched!
he's trying so hard to ask for it to instigate it and it's painful being that vulnerable, and then he's opened himself up too much and lost and feels worse than before. and maybe he's not his favourite's favourite. and maybe he's alone and lonely and it's not for lack of trying so there's nothing left for him to do but be hurt. and push greg away (but tom can't ever push greg away for good! because greg's still and always tom's favourite! it's repeated in the bathroom fight and forehead sticker soooo directly!!! you hurt me, I try to hate you, I pull you close and kiss you with care and tenderness).
and now I'm also just thinking about all the times that tom's touched greg and how what that really means is he wants greg to touch him.
(and how in s4 and beyond the finale greg is touchy with him and will be touchy and will rise to fight and grab when tom wants and needs to grab. how tom is greg's favourite too. how greg becomes and grows to be everything tom's needing from him, and it's just from greg becoming so comfortable in they're relationship and wanting tom in turn and caring about tom in turn and being possessive of tom in turn. the verdict is love, your honour!!!! they're married now)

no but exactly like, to have an unrequited fp is like. actually soul crushing and greg is not at the point yet [re: nero sporus scene] where he can trust tom's affection, not only because tom is. well you know, tom, with him, at the start, but because he's been given up on and abandoned before. he also can't really comprehend someone actually wanting him to touch him or him touching someone and it being welcomed either because of how often he is recoiled from or treated like something gross. also it's like. a really heavy thing on someone! he responds nicely but he just can't reach that level yet because why should he trust tom's love like that when people have thrown him around before depending on actions which he can never get right [ewan] or abandoned him to fend for himself even though he's tried to take care of them [marianne].
yeah yeah tom needs touch absolutely. he's always touching greg because his love language is touch [lucky for him greg's is too so that works out when they finally realise that each other is genuine and really does care about one another] and again greg is kinda like. HUH?? because he's so used to people purposefully trying to avoid him physically. he likes it but he can't fully commit to it s1-3 [3.09 is i think the first time he realises that maybe it's okay because he reaches up to hug at first, then decides not to because he doesn't want to frighten tom off, but then tom holds his arms out and he takes tom's shoulders and pulls him in slightly and tom is jostled a little with the force of that hug, like. man.] because he's just like. what is happening? is it real?
and ohghhgnfdf yeah definitely earlier on tom tries to push greg away but just can't which is another reason greg reacts so strongly to tom pushing him away/withholding the love and trust from him in later s4 that he's given earlier on, because wtf man, i thought we were best friends? i thought we were over this shit, i thought i was your confidant? he even asks in america decides, what are we? because he doesn't want to be tom's side piece any more, he wants to be his lover. he doesn't want to be treated as someone who is told in the aftermath. but tom is doing it unintentionally here bc he's so laser focused on getting to a position where he can secure greg like he's so desperate to keep greg with him he ends up pushing him out by accident. he does admit to needing greg specifically but it's not enough, and it leads to greg's actions in the finale - he needs to protect himself because he's not sure if tom still will. everything is so much.
but YEAH ON GOD S4 GREG IS MY ENTIRE ASS FOR THIS REASON. he's soooo. god. he wifes for tom so hard it's actually insane. it becomes very clear to us that greg absolutely adores tom back; he's being carefree with him, laughing openly with him, pressing his whole body to him, being practically glued to him in the sense you won't see one without the other, singing his song, taking care of him, watching out for him, coming into the damn ass wake with him because it makes tom feel safe, being his literal lifeline and not hanging up on him when he needs it most, smashing a bottle in the face of the person who hurts his best friend bc enough is enough. between s3-4 they became best friends which is just so like. deep, and builds a stronger foundation for whatever fucked up lusty thing they had before. possessive greg of tom is my ASS god i wish we had gotten more of that. but at least we have these pics.

It's such a tragedy that Riven is the only guy thats gotten a character arc
I love my idiot so much because you get to watch him become a better person and he's soooo important. He's just trying his best to be as good of a person he can be and watching him get better is something that can be so personal
And then you have the other guys
Sky is in DESPERATE need of a character arc. Like man's only got iced out during the end of s1 and then said sorry. That's all. He has multiple people tell him the correct course of action, and he ignored all of them because I genuinely think he's terrified of interpersonal conflict and he did the equivalent of hiding the vase he broke instead of fessing up. The narrative pretty clearly shows that Sky's engagement with Diaspro was both arranged and was likely made when they were very young. Like he didn't want to deal with the consequences of disobeying his parents or pissing off Diaspro, because as seen in s2 and s3 they both took that so well, and he didn't want to leave the person he actually cared about nor hurt her....so he did nothing. AND THATS A FLAW!!! A PRETTY HUGE ONE!!!! Dude acts like a guilty 5 year old anytime consequences are even mentioned, he's so majorly possessive in s2 he makes s3 Riven's and Nabu's actions look down right sensible. Riven's crimes, that are all his own and he wasn't manipulated or influenced into committing, include: Being a chauvinist prick, being a asshole to his squad, the golden kingdom subplot jealous rage, not believing Musa when she said something was up with his bike. Sky's crimes include: Lying to everyone including the person he's (trying to be) in a relationship with, debatably cheating, being in the trees with binoculars like a fucking weirdo (over calls too, sir, your making s1 Riven look mentally stable), and general dickary about Avalon in s2 before he and Bloom were even dating and before they knew Avalon was evil. In conclusion? None of these characters know what a stable response to anything is, and the ladies aren't excluded from this. I'm looking at you Musa acting like Riven personally belongs to her all though out s1 and s2 before they were dating (and getting big mad, or smacking people because of it), Aisha thinking breaking and entering is an acceptable way to find out if someone like likes her friends, and Tecna expecting Timmy to attack the Trix (which would of gotten him fucking killed let's be real) and being all fucking grumpy when he didn't. Not a single character in this show understands how to act like a nomral person, AND SKY NEEDS A CHARACTER ARC. I'd say he's on the same level as Riven for assholery, with the difference being that Sky is nice and Riven is not, but I think Sky's actions are worse??? So it balances out. Get this bitch a character arc about learning to be KIND instead of NICE and fucking STAT. I'd eat that shit up tbh. Make Sky go though reflection and work too please, preferably in s2 and s3 so to show that realizing your a bad person is a lot slower when you're not in the middle of a terrorist plot after waking up from manipulation/mindcontrol and shown an illusion of you as a monster
Seeing Sky become a kinder more respectful person would make my day. His good boy status from the characters that don't personally know him doesn't bother me all that much, because it shows that Sky has a way of coming off as a....good boy, but that additude from people who know him is very annoying actually. Just hit him with the angst stick until he fucking acts right, just like the narrative did with Riven, please I'm begging you. I have the perfect stick to start beating him with too, it's gonna be great—
"But Rus!" You say annoyed that you haven't been able to get a word edge wise in this whole time. "What about Timmy?" Yeah, for Timmy to have a character arc the narrative would have to acknowledge that he changed in any way. I'm dead serious. You remember in s2 when Timmy got this sudden burst of confidence and started giving orders to the guys, you remember how in s1 he could barely hold a conversation, you remember how in s2 all the guys treat this event as it's completely normal Timmy behavior? Timmy's character doesn't grow, it just changed in logical order. It is less that he became more confident over the course of the show, and more like the writers wanted him to be more confident but decided that he wasn't worth the screen time of letting him grow into said confidence and learn to love himself, so they just made him more confident as the seasons went on. That is not a character arc, that's character hopscotch. If the show would allow Timmy two seconds of screen time to show off him learning to be more confident that would be very sexy, thank you
As for the rest of them? Nabu is fucking dead, and s4 scrubbed away all his flaws to make it extra sad tm (in reality just making him hella annoying and preachy, I miss my dumbass from s3 that couldn't talk his way out of a paper bag), so he's not in the show long enough in s3 to have an arc and s4 doesn't have the balls. For Helia to have a character arc the show would have to bother remember he's there, give him screen time, and acknowledge his personality, and lol like that's ever happening. I don't think the writers even have flaws for Helia written down somewhere to even have an arc about. Brandon on the other hand is perfect and doesn't need an arc, his only crime is simply being too sexy and likeable, and having women throw themselves at him with increasingly disastrous effects
Come onnn, Riven shouldn't get all the fun of realizing he's a terrible person and learning to be better. Let Sky enjoy the grueling process of change as well :)) and then give Timmy and Helia a littol arc too. As a treat. All you have to do is make that scene in s2 about Timmy learning to take charge and.... acknowledge Helia's existence

this idea that the Doctor lands someplace and ruins everyone's day by being so Badass and Awestriking isn't really a Thing in Nu!Who "is also contrasted with the theme of the doctor inspiring *others* to do things (v Explicit theme in s1 but it's present in all those other CoDs you mention)...
re:2, i think the one exception would be 7 but i think with 7 the chess-god-manipulator thing works bc we see the consequences of it thru ace. we also see it w/ amy and river but

also i've really liked your posts on asexuality on dw and idk if you've written this but just in case, i think it's also relevant to the very specific way some het guys are so protective of the doc's asexuality/aromancy(+the show's): "asexuality" as it functions in dw is celebrated by those guys ( i suspect) bc it gives the fantasy power over the "womanly wiles" - it's a proof of how the doc is so "enlightened" and "above" the temptress or seduction trope.

I am so pleased you spelled out the "womanly wiles" trope, because yes, I hadn't quite seen that, but had been circling around like... the Enlightened Asexual (or the Celibate Monk as I believe M*ffat once called it with reference to Sherlock) (and then someone like Irene Adler is the epitome of that Temptress in his version of the story...)
and what you're saying about "humbling" and "humanising" is so fascinating, because ofc to a bunch of us aces and aros and aroaces the part where the Doctor struggles to form normative relationships is one of the the most humanising factors, and ofc M*ffat especially likes the "Godlike" Doctor quite a bit but it comes back to these ideas of allosexuality and alloromanticism
but then also rejects a lot of those ideas, from memory, for being too simplistic after all, because people struggle to write the Doctor as simply alloromantic and allosexual (I've heard because the Doctor is alien, because the Doctor is more compelling when lonely, because the narrative couldn't sustain it, etcetcetc, but in the end it all comes back to "the Doctor as Character cannot get into these relationships for... reasons...." and that becomes compelling character)
(also Gomez!Master is like "we're so beyond this, we're the best thing ever, we're nemeses, we're besties, my homeboy, my rotten soldier, my silly rabbit," etcetcetc... paraphrased. but that's in M*ffat era)
(the more the show flirts with allosexuality and alloromanticism the more nuanced the Doctor becomes to me as an aroace character! because no longer is it an Enlightened Mightier Than Thou Cannot Be Touched Celibacy type Concept, it's someone who's being affected by deep relationships and very often unable to equate them using simple terms!!!! arghhh it's sooooo!!!! SOOOOOO!!!!!!!)

WELL I meant like. the writers could have just said he was good at playing violin but gets stage fright about it, like they just say Eliot is good at guitar and singing but gets stage fright about it. it seems mean to give Eliot that but not Hardison. the man is already getting dragged around every heist by his ear they could have let him have this one thing.

YES re: stage fright being a better option. thats is a much better idea anon!! makes more sense that he simply DOES play violin. he has a LOT of skills. i mean, hardison is a genius, full stop. he can do what he puts his mind to, plus he's shown to be incredibly talented at a lot of things which aren't directly related to his job, like painting. i don't think he gets enough credit as being seriously extremely gifted AND seriously extremely dedicated to honing some of those skills... he has a lot of talents that he's very causal about, but then the ones like hacking that he focuses on? those are mentioned to take so much effort, sleepless nights, etc etc. there's a reason that he's the best hacker on a team of people who are the best in their fields.
and this is all while he's still half-learning. leverage is crime university for him, as episode commentaries tend to say lol. he's... i forgot, 21-22? when leverage starts (ik aldis hodge had just turned 21 when he was hired for the role. looking back on s1 especially, he is soooo young. ik im 20 but like. 21 is so young. it really is). and he's been learning & teaching himself for years already, but it's still early days in his crime career & he seems to already be better than anyone else at what he does. and is somehow fairly well-adjusted unlike anyone else on the team lol. but he does have his own trauma, and his own problems he encounters. eg he hasn't really had a long-term relationship (according to commentary on... im gonna say girls night out/boys night out jobs? idk. s4 somewhere), so while we get a lot of parker dealing with a relationship that she finds kinda overwhelming due to the total lack of safe connections she's had in her life etc etc, we also gotta remember that the parker/hardison (*cough* /eliot too, *cough*) relationship is a pretty new and intimidating thing for him too. and. oh i just realised how off topic i am. wow. if going on tangents was a sport i'd be an olympic athlete.
(and aldis hodge btw is also so multi-talented, he designs watches and paints and, of course, acts. i remember some commentary from the bank shot job saying how they were gonna have hardison be fairly awkward on the grifting, but aldis hodge is just ridiculously good at doing those scenes where he totally stumps the mark/lackeys/cops/etc, and a lot of it is improv. irrelevant ik but i just think it's cool just how good he is at those quick grifting scenes).
anyway. eliot is so touchstarved :((( and he loves his family even when they annoy him or brainhack him lol. he's kinda immune to threats and pain and stuff for sad reasons but the smallest affection, he responds to. which is upsetting to think about, how much pain you have to have to no longer acknowledge it, and how little love you have to experience/accept for any amount to be disarming. but yeah thats true, idk why sophie says hardison was a particularly good target then... i guess her NLP stuff is supposedly easier to do subtly than hypnotism? maybe. regardless, the NLP stuff is absolutelyyyy pseudoscience, but as you said, i just allow for sophie to be able to magically do that stuff lol. its not real but sophie can do the impossible so i just go with it for 42 mins lmao.

my fave character in the whole series was hange :””) i lovveeddd them from the very beginning when i watched aot s1 in 2013 so its been a decade long love ✋🏼😩 i cried so hard during s4 pt3 :””) but yeee i just adore the nerdy scientific characters that aren’t scared of the imminent threat of the verse but rather intrigued and curious to almost a point of insanity lol. but i think the hange scene i loved the most was during midnight sun (BEST AOT EP EVER I’LL DIE ON THIS HILL) is when mikasa is terrified of armin not being the one they bring back to life n hange says something like “there are people that i wish i could bring back too” 😭😭 idk that scene hit me rly hard n really quantified the amt of loss in aot i think
my second save character is reiner >:3 bc he’s so babygirl n i wanna make him my housewife. LOL jk naw but i HATED that man s2-s3 bc his whole multiple personality thing was such bullshit like 🙄 ok so you’ve killed sm of my fave characters but you’re still acting like a good guy??? go fuck yourself dude. BUT i started to get intrigued by his character when he was so committed to giving ymir’s letter to christa during shiganshina arc in s3 pt2…and then s4 rolled around and i fell IN LOVE W HIM. he was the only marleyan side warrior eldian that showed the right amount of remorse for what they did on paradis island, and although his backstory is so sad n its obv not his fault he was groomed into a war machine at such a young age, it was nice that isayama made him so guilty to the point of suicidal ideation. and he pulled THROUGGGH during the finale omg the scene where jean held onto him and said he is also a scout☝🏼😭 fuck yeah. also i’d like to impregnate him
my third fave character UUGHHH ITS TOO HARD THERES SO MANY but honestly i just have to say eren. i have soooo many mixed opinions ab eren’s character i could talk ab his character for HOURRSS but s1-3 eren was my BABY. my SON. MY SUGAR PLUM PUMPY UMPY UMPKIN. i mean he was pretty generic shonen protagonist coded lol but he was just such a sweetheart that was so hotheaded n determined to take care of the ppl he loved. it was always so easy to empathize w him on so many fronts n i love characters like that. however his character took an interesting turn in s4, and although i don’t agree w his actions in s4, i can’t say i didn’t want to see him succeed either…super weird, i still don’t quite know how to feel ab the events of the rumbling (i mean i err on the side of it was incredibly evil of him) but the fact there’s sm nuance to his character, regardless of whether i agree w him or not, means he’s one of my faves (we dont talk ab his character in the ending though. shhh. to me aot ends s4 ep28…sorry)

i just feel like emily usually humiliated lorelai and getting into her relationship as she did with luke to a point when lorelai couldn't stand it anymore and it drives me insane
