Also, curious: what does the tennis ROs play style look like, like who IRL is the closest to their play style?

Second anon: hehe, the french open!! bumping this up because the French open will no longer be in full swing and I wanted to add a side-fangirl squee about Nadal.

Edit: OK so it took me so long that the French open is now over and MY BAE Rafa has done it again ((and whattt a trip that was)). Not even gonna put a spoiler alert because anyone who’s interested should’ve found this out by now.

Take another obligatory Rafa pic as celebration, because belated Rafa Nadal gushing is apparently part of my brand now. Cheers!

(P.S. I put the answer after the cut because I expect this level of tennis nerding out might not be for the average joe. feel free to share your theories as well!)

Rayyan is modelled after Nadal - single-track-mind determination, power and grit, aggressive topspin shots from the baseline. Most of all, Rayyan resembles Nadal in that they are both absurdly resilient, both physically and mentally. Both love the clay surface most, because they can pound ball after ball at their opponents in a brutal, punishing rally, and showcase their surprising ability to stay in the game, against all odds.

Tobin is modelled after Federer - an all-court player with unmatchable grace, finesse, and fluid versatility. I thought it'd be fun for the current no. 1 and no. 2 on the Cargill team to have this cool Nadal-Federer dynamic. Tobin is more-or-less solid on every surface, but like Federer, they do best on grass - with the ball’s slightly more unpredictable bounce, they’re able to hit beautiful winners with staggering variety.

Sam - Trick shot master, known for their creative showmanship and ability to work a crowd. But beneath their love for improvisation and joking around, there’s substance that people often don’t give them enough credit for. First, there’s the pure racket-wizardry and reflexes (not to mention imaginativeness) that characterises their playing style. Then, (and this one runs deeper) there’s a resilience and stoicism that comes with knowing that life can - and will - throw anything at you, and adapting to it is all one can do. And so, where other players would rage and throw their rackets, Sam would simply take it as it is, and crack a joke. Someone similar would be Mansour Bahrami, for reasons I touched on briefly here :)

Deepal, Max, Akimi - Counterpunchers, though Deepal is extremely fast and hence able to use their speed as an offensive weapon, similar to Gaël Monfils, maybe? Akimi is on the extreme end of the defensive spectrum, while Max is generally more unpredictable and leans more towards being a junk-baller - often slipping in a silly shot here or there (or perhaps has simply not grown into a rigid style yet). Both are more similar to Caroline Wozniacki/Chris Evert perhaps (sometimes the latter was described as a “human backboard”). All of them generally prefer clay surfaces, because clay is a little more forgiving, allowing them to drag out the rallies and wear their opponents down (or slide to the ball for unbelievable gets, in Deepal’s case).

Emerson, Blake - Emerson is a serve and volleyer, very quick to the net, aggressive and eager to end the point early. Sharp reflexes, superb in the air, with sharp smashes and dropshots. There aren’t many pure serve-and-volleyers left in the modern game, but Serena Williams has a similarly powerful serve and usually starts dominating the rally right from the get-go. John McEnroe is another example I guess! Blake is also a serve-and-volleyer, but a far less successful one, with a HUGE serve and good net skills, but not much else to back it up - sometimes, they get caught in front and struggle with passing shots (could be a better player if they had better judgment on when to rush the net).

Jacks, Lee - Like Tobin, Jacks is an all-court player with relatively well-rounded strengths, but Tobin plays slightly more aggressively, and is more likely to go for winners using their tactics and racket technique, while Jacks prefers to slowly build up a winning position and construct defensive-to-offensive transitions. Pretty functional on all surfaces. I’d say Tommy Haas might be the closest match, especially because Tommy is also considered one of the “best players to have never won a grand slam”, which seems to encapsulate the difference between Jacks and Tobin (at least right now). Similarly, Lee is a well-rounded player with a natural athleticism and sharp tactics. They’re good at reading people, but because their time is stretched too thin as it is (they’re in about three different clubs), they’ve never had much ability to focus solely on tennis.

things that happened in the nhl today (that i’m aware of) (tuesday, november 28)

1. racist rapist team (bl*ckhawks) are covering up yet another scandal over corey perry. he's on waivers with the purpose of contract termination. the gm said it didn't involve anything with players/their families. reporters are more mad about this than they've ever been on much more pressing issues (team canada, sa coverups, etc)

2. anthony beauvillier traded to the racist rapists in exchange for a fifth round pick in the 2024 draft. the girlies are not taking this well.

3. p*trick k*ne signed with the red wings, which elated everyone (i don't follow any red wings fans so i didn't see any of their reactions) (sorry about y'all's lives)

4. mitch marner got hit in the face with a puck and played the rest of the game with a cage

5. sam bennet and max domi threw hands, bennet destroyed domi, domi shook his hair with his hands probably to make fun of bennet for being bald

6. tz and dixie breakup rumors on the same day that alex killorn confirmed that they were dating on spittin chiclets on their new episode

7. john marino cut his hair and i’m pretty sure dawson mercer did too

8. zack macewen on the senators got fined $2,018.23, the max allowed by the cba for unsportsmanlike misconduct against matthew tkachuk last night (utter bullshit imo. he literally attacked him)

9. lian bichel (texas stars player, ahl affiliate of the dallas stars) decided to exercise his right to return to sweeden

10. radko gudas day-to-day with a lower-body injury (this is not good for the ducks)

11. devils made a sick third period comeback from being down 4-2. brenden smith threw hands with anders lee. lee left bloody. then with 22.1 seconds left in the fourth, curtis lazar scored and they won 5-4

12. the leafs and the panthers went into a shootout. three rounds wasn't enough, so they went into a fifth. the panthers' evan rodrigues scored, so the panthers went off to the locker room. upon review, the goal was waved off because it was a rebound goal and players are not allowed to double tap during a shootout. the panthers had to be called back out for a sixth round and the leafs' noah gregor won the game

Lily James and Sebastian Stan Reportedly Cast in Secrets & Wives

Lily James and Sebastian Stan have reportedly joined the cast of Focus Features’ period film ‘Secrets & Wives.’ The movie, helmed by Carly Wray, is scheduled to start shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, and Vancouver, British Columbia, on an undisclosed date. The film, set in the 1980s rural Washington state, revolves around a single working mother named Sherry, who is swept off her feet by a charismatic, larger-than-life outsider named Martin Lewis. They run off and get married, only for hell to break loose. Sherry’s life gets turned upside down when it’s revealed that Martin is a married ex-gangster.

Lily and Stan are expected to play Sherry and Martin respectively. The two performers previously worked together for Hulu’s biographical series ‘Pam & Tommy,’ in which Lily plays actress and model Pamela Anderson and Stan portrays musician Tommy Lee.

Lily recently completed the filming of Sam Worthington and Riz Ahmed-starrer ‘Relay’ and Joseph Gordon-Levitt-starrer ‘Providence.’ Her upcoming release ‘The Iron Claw,’ starring Zac Efron and ‘The Bear’ fame Jeremy Allen White, is scheduled to be released on December 22, 2023. Her recent credits include Josephine Esperanto in ‘Finally Dawn,’ Zoe Stevenson in ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It?’ Linda Radlett in ‘The Pursuit of Love,’ and Ellie Appleton in ‘Yesterday.’

Stan recently concluded the filming of ‘A Different Man,’ in which he stars alongside Renate Reinsve. He is also a part of the cast of Marvel Studios’ ‘Thunderbolts.’ His recent credits include Vlad Tenev in ‘Dumb Money,’ God in ‘Ghosted,’ Max in ‘Sharper,’ Steve in ‘Fresh,’ Nick Fowler in ‘The 355,’ and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.’

Although the exact dates of the filming are yet to be announced, we can expect the same to begin after the conclusion of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Atlanta, known as the Hollywood East, is home to several production facilities and natural attractions. The city previously hosted the production of several famed projects, including ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Stranger Things,’ ‘Cobra Kai,’ ‘Ozark,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ etc. Vancouver AKA Hollywood North, on the other hand, is a significant filming location of ‘Virgin River,’ ‘Supernatural,’ ‘Criminal Minds,’ ‘The Last of Us,’ and ‘Fear the Walking Dead.’

Wray, who is at the helm, also penned the screenplay. The screenwriter wrote several acclaimed episodes of AMC’s drama series ‘Mad Men.’ She also co-wrote and co-executive produced HBO’s superhero series ‘Watchmen’ and Max’s dystopian series ‘DMZ.’ Her other credits include ‘Westworld,’ ‘Mindhunter,’ ‘The Leftovers,’ ‘The Bastard Executioner,’ and ‘Constantine.’

Berlanti/Schechter Films, New Leaf Literary & Media, and Truly*Adventurous team up with Focus Features for the production of the film. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Michael McGrath, Pouya Shahbazian, Matthew Pearl, and Greg Nichols are the producers.

I found this IF and have fallen in love <3! Those matches get me itching to pick up my racket again! Quick question, what are the characters' favorite drills? I know mine has always been the bouncing ball one.

Rayyan likes being fed balls to the baseline (left or right) and just pounding them back. Gets them in a flow state (and helps them vent a bit of frustration/keeps them sane).

Tobin likes condition games (where you play a game with a teammate), the mix of pitting their skills against someone in a friendly, dynamic, mentally stimulating way is very appealing (not to mention its endless variety). Otherwise, complicated partner drills with fun coordination patterns are a close second.

Sam enjoys doing sliced drop drills, something about way it bounces back towards the net--it's one of their favorite shots to play anyway, cause they love the reaction it elicits, so it makes sense they'd want to perfect it. They also like new drills, anything they haven't seen before.

All other teammates below the cut.

Deepal likes anything that doesn't take too much energy (lazy) and allows them to chat a lot. Watching matches together or discussing doubles strategy is an example. Otherwise, they also secretly enjoy doing drills where you sprint up and down the court, cause they're good at it.

Jacks likes working on their weaknesses, so probably something like volley smashing maybe. They're a small person without bloodlust, so volley smashes are definitely not within their comfort zone.

Emerson LOVES serving, partially why they became a Serve and Volley player in the first place. As a kid, you could give them a basket of balls and chuck them in a court and they'd keep themselves entertained for hours.

Max likes lob drills, mostly because they really really depend on a good lob to get them out of trouble in the game. It's their crutch and their salvation and definitely their safe place.

Akimi likes set patterned drills (e.g. drop, crosscourt groundstroke, down the line shot) because the structure let's them focus on the technique of every shot/movement.

Lee likes hitting against a tennis wall, reminds them of their childhood and going down to the "wall" in their neighbourhood with their elder brothers.

Blake likes going to the gym/strength exercises and probably could've been a weightlifter if they didn't show so much initial promise with a racket in their youth.

Bonus: Coach Sy's fave drill is conditioned games, and Coach Jones's is a volley + run back to the baseline to get a retrieve/passing shot drill.

Thank goodness for Taron Egerton (and John) because how else would ever know what's going on with Edward Holcroft. This long absence - has he fallen into the sea? Got lost in the forest? We'd never know if it weren't for these random IG stories of Taron (and John) of Ed.

Where is Edward now? Who knows. What is known is that he won't be seen in FX's adaptation of NEVER LET ME GO because the project has been scrapped. So yes, another Holcroft Hiatus is in the offing.

I must admit I didn't really belive that Ed Holcroft account was legit but I was wrong.

Another missing KINGSMAN star is Colin Firth. Colin has been busy in the past couple of years with back-to-back projects (MOTHERING SUNDAY, EMPIRE OF LIGHT, THE STAIRCASE) and he even pops up in the romantic-comedy RYE LANE (currently in theaters in the UK, streaming on Hulu in the U.S). But he has nothing currently lined up according to IMDB - even the action-comedy NEW YORK WILL EAT YOU that he was attached to in 2020 is not listed.

-Now someone who will not stop working is Taron Egerton and I, for one, am happy for that.

He can currently be seen in the excellent AppleTV+'s film TETRIS produced by Matthew Vaughn's MARV Films.

Taron and costar Nikita Efremov are so great.

Taron has CARRY ON in post-production and is doing a three-peater with AppleTV+ by reteaming with the streamer and his BLACK BIRD creator Dennis Lehane for FIREBUG (which Egerton will also serve as executive producer).

What is it about?: "Written by Lehane and inspired by true events, Firebug will follow a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator (played by Rocketman star Egerton) as they pursue the trails of two serial arsonists."

Taron has donned his producer hat by acquiring the screen rights to Josh Silver's debut novel, the LGBTQ+ psychological thriller, "HappyHead". So far he has no plans to act in the project.

When Taron isn't working he's gassing people up, like his ROCKETMAN costar Kit Connor .

KINGSMAN ROLL CALL

-Mark Strong is another one who doesn't rest on his laurels. He can be currently seen on Netflix's MURDER MYSTERY 2 starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.

He also has 8 projects in various stages of production including the upcoming HBO Max series DUNE: THE SISTHERHOOD. But with the constant changes at WB/Disco(very) and the series director and one of the leads, Shirley Henderson, exiting the project, who Is to say that the series will ever happen.

-Not a BAFTA party but Vanity Fair Oscar party, Sofia Boutella bumped into her former boss Madonna and her fellow former back-up dancers to Madge.

Boutella can be currently seen in Steven Knight's ROGUE HEROES and she will be in Zack Snyder's upcoming REBEL MOON.

-Sophia Cookson was recently seen in ITV's mini- THE CONFESSIONS of FRANNIE LANGTON and will be seen soon in Lee Tamahori's (ONCE WERE WARRIORS), EMPEROR in the lead role. The film also stars Adrien Brody and Bill Skarsgård. She also has STOCKHOLM BLOODBATH coming up.

FREDDIE HUBBARD, UN GÉNIE MÉCONNU

Né le 7 avril 1938 à Indianapolis en Indiana, Freddie Hubbard a commencé sa carrière musicale comme membre du groupe du Arsenal Technical High School à Indianapolis, où il a appris à jouer du tuba, du cor français et du mellaphone (une sorte de trompette), avant de fixer son choix sur la trompette et le flugelhorn. Freddie avait été initié au jazz par son frère Earmon Jr., un pianiste qui était un grand admirateur de Bud Powell.

Après avoir constaté son grand talent, le trompettiste Lee Katzman, qui avait joué dans l’orchestre de Stan Kenton, lui avait conseillé d’aller étudier au Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music (devenu de nos jours le Jordan College of the Arts de l’Université Butler) avec Max Woodbury, le trompettiste principal de l’Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. À l’adolescence, Hubbard avait participé à sa première session d’enregistrement en accompagnant les frères Wes et Montgomery. Il avait aussi collaboré avec le bassiste Larry Ridley et le saxophoniste James Spaulding. À la même époque où Hubbard participait à son premier enregistrement avec les frères Montgomery, il avait fondé un premier groupe nommé ‘’The Jazz Contemporaries’’ avec le bassiste Larry Ridley, le saxophoniste et flutiste James Spaulding, le pianiste Walt Miller et le batteur Paul Parker. Le groupe se produisait souvent au George’s Bar, un club très populaire sur l’Indiana Avenue.

UNE ASCENSION RAPIDE

En 1958, à l’âge de vingt ans, Hubbard s’était installé à New York. Hubbard avait connu un succès instantané en accompagnant les meilleurs musiciens de jazz de l’époque, dont Philly Joe Jones, Sonny Rollins, Slide Hampton, Eric Dolphy, J.J. Johnson et Quincy Jones. À la même période, Hubbard avait aussi partagé un appartement avec le multi-insrumentiste Eric Dolphy.

Sur la recommandation de Miles Davis, Hubbard avait signé un contrat avec Blue Note avec qui il avait enregistré son premier album comme leader en novembre 1960, intitulé ‘’Open Sesame.’’ Participaient à l’enregistrement le saxophoniste Tina Brooks, le pianiste McCoy Tyner, le bassiste Sam Jones et le batteur Clifford Jarvis. Six jours plus tard, Hubbard avait renvoyé l’ascenseur à Brooks en collaborant à son album True Blue. En l’espace d’un an, Hubbard avait enregistré deux autres albums, ‘’Going Up’’, avec McCoy Tyner et Hank Mobley, ainsi que ‘’Hub Cap’’, avec Julian Priester et Jimmy Heath.

Après avoir entendu Hubbard jouer avec le trompettiste Don Cherry, le saxophoniste Ornette Coleman l’avait invité à participer à son album ‘’Free Jazz.’’ En 1960-1961, Hubbard s’était également joint à Quincy Jones dans le cadre d’une tournée en Europe. Il avait aussi travaillé avec le batteur Max Roach.

En mai 1961, Hubbard avait collaboré avec John Coltrane sur son dernier enregistrement pour Atlantic, intitulé ‘’Olé Coltrane’’. Avec Eric Dolphy et Art Davis, Hubbard avait aussi été invité à participer au premier album de Coltrane pour Impulse, intitulé ‘’Africa-Brass.’’ En août 1961, Hubbard avait enregistré ‘’Ready for Freddy’’, sa première collaboration avec le saxophoniste Wayne Shorter, qui est considéré comme un des sommets de sa carrière. À la fin de la même année, Hubbard était devenu un partenaire régulier de Shorter lorsqu’il avait remplacé Lee Morgan avec les Jazz Messengers d’Art Blakey. Hubbard avait enregistré plus de dix albums live et en studio avec Blakey durant la période la plus productive du groupe. Les années 1960 avaient aussi été une période faste pour Hubbard, qui avait enregistré huit albums comme leader pour Blue Note, et plus d’une vingtaine comme membre d’autres formations. Hubbard était demeuré avec Blakey jusqu’en 1966, alors qu’il avait décidé de former l’un des nombreux petits groupes sous son nom. Faisaient également partie de la formation son ancien associé de Blue Note, James Spaulding, le pianiste Kenny Barron et le batteur Louis Hayes. Le groupe avait enregistré avec Atlantic.

C’est à cette époque que Hubbard avait commencé à se libérer des influences de Clifford Brown et de Lee Morgan et à développer son propre son. Il avait aussi remporté le prix du meilleur trompettiste de jazz décerné par le magazine DownBeat.

Pendant les années 1960, Hubbard avait aussi participé comme accompagnateur aux plus importants albums de l’époque, dont ‘’The Blues and Abstract Truth’’ d’Oliver Nelson, ‘’Out of Lunch!’’ d’Eric Dolphy, ‘’Maiden Voyage’’ d’Herbie Hancock, et ‘’Speak No Evil’’ de Wayne Shorter. Même s’il n’avait pas ouvertement adopté le free jazz, Hubbard avait participé à deux de ses albums-phares : ‘’Free Jazz’’ d’Ornette Coleman et ‘’Ascension’’ de John Coltrane, en plus de collaborer à l’enregistrement d’une des compositions les plus avant-gardistes de Sonny Rollins, intitulée ‘’East Broadway Run Down’’ (tirée de l’album du même nom), avec Elvin Jones et Jimmy Garrison, deux membres du célèbre quartet de John Coltrane.

‘’I don’t know how I met all these people’’, avait plus tard expliqué Hubbard. ‘’But a lot of them came to get me, too. They sought me out because they saw I wanted to experiment, and during that period, I was changing my style of the trumpet. I was trying to play the trumpet like a saxophone.’’

Le style de Hubbard avait changé après qu’il se soit établi à Hollywood dans les années 1970. En Californie, les trompettistes jouaient un rôle plus effacé et plus discret, et Hubbard avait dû s’adapter. Il racontait : ‘’You know, lifestyle out there is different from mine than in New York. I was in the Hollywood Hills, above the Bowl. I could look at the ocean on this side. I can hear the concerts free at the Bowl. And I had a big swimming pool. I had parties all the time, and the trumpet just was in the corner a lot of the time, when it should have been on my lips.’’

Hubbard avait connu son plus grand succès commercial dans les années 1970 lorsqu’il avait participé à une série d’albums pour la compagnie CTI Records de Creed Taylor, ce qui lui avait permis d’éclipser Stanley Turrentine, Hubert Laws et même George Benson. Même si ses premiers disques des années 1970, ‘’Red Clay’’, ‘’First Light’’ (qui avait remporté un prix Grammy en 1972 comme meilleure performance instrumentale par un artiste de jazz) et ‘’Sky Dive’’ avaient été plutôt bien reçus et étaient considérés comme ses meilleurs, les albums que Hubbard avait enregistrés plus tard (il avait même flirté avec le jazz-fusion en collaborant avec Red Clay dans le cadre de l’enregistrement des albums ‘’Straight Life’’, ‘’Sky Dive’’ et ‘’First Light’’) avaient été critiqués en raison de leur approche trop commerciale. L’album ‘’First Light’’ mettait en vedette les pianistes Herbie Hancock et Richard Wyands, les guitaristes Eric Gale et George Benson, le contrebassiste Ron Carter, le batteur Jack DeJohnette et le percussionniste Airto Moreira. En 1994, Hubbard avait renoué avec la chanteuse et compositrice Catherine Whitney, qui avait également collaboré à l’album ‘’First Light.’’

Après avoir signé avec Columbia, en 1977, Hubbard s’était joint au groupe tout-étoile V.S.O.P., aux côtés d’Herbie Hancock, de Tony Williams, de Ron Carter et de Wayne Shorter. Tous les membres du groupe à l’exception d’Hubbard avaient fait partie du quintet de Miles Davis au milieu des années 1960. Plusieurs des enregistrements en concert du groupe avaient été publiés plus tard. En 1978, Hubbard avait également collaboré à la pièce ‘’Zanzibar’’ du chanteur Billy Joel. La pièce était tirée de l’album ‘’52nd Street’’ qui avait remporté un prix Grammy l’année suivante comme meilleur disque de jazz.

PROBLÈMES DE SANTÉ ET DÉCÈS

Dans les années 1980, Hubbard avait fondé un nouveau groupe, cette fois avec Billy Childs et Larry Klein. Accueilli chaleureusement par la critique, le groupe avait présenté plusieurs concerts aux États-Unis et en Europe, souvent en compagnie du saxophoniste ténor Joe Henderson, avec un répertoire composé de pièces de hard bop et de jazz modal. Hubbard s’était également produit au festival de jazz de Monterey en 1980 et en 1989 (cette fois avec le vibraphoniste Bobby Hutcherson). Avec Woody Shaw, Hubbard avait enregistré deux albums pour Blue Note. Les deux hommes ont aussi joué en concert en duo de 1985 à 1987. Toujours en 1987, Hubbard avait co-dirigé l’enregistrement de l’album ‘’Stardust’’ avec Buddy Golson. L’année suivante, Hubbard avait de nouveau équipe fait avec Art Blakey à l’occasion d’un concert en Hollande, ce qui avait donné lieu à l’enregistrement de l’album ‘’Free the Wind.’’ La même année, Hubbard avait joué des solos de flugelhorn et de trompette sur deux pièces de l’album ‘’Reg Strikes Back’’ d’Elton John. En 1990, Hubbard avait fait une apparition au Japon dans le cadre d’un concert mettant en vedette le batteur Elvin Jones, le saxophoniste Sonny Fortune, les pianistes George Duke et Benny Green, les contrebassistes Ron Carter et Rufus Reid, et la chanteuse Salena Jones. Hubbard a également joué au festival de jazz de Varsovie, dans le cadre d’une performance qui avait été immortalisée sur l’album ‘’Live at the the Warsaw Jazz Festival’’, publié en 1992 par les disques Jazzmen.

Au début des années 1990, Hubbard, qui était déterminé à recommencer à jouer ce qu’il qualifiait de ‘’vrai jazz’’, s’était installé à Philadelphie et avait contribué à l’émergence de nouveaux talents en intégrant à sa nouvelle formation le contrebassiste Christian McBride, le saxophoniste Javon Jackson, le batteur Carl Allen et le pianiste Benny Green. Hubbard a également collaboré avec le New Jazz Composers Octet, avec lequel il avait joué et enregistré un album collectif dirigé par le trompettiste David Weiss.

Découragé, Hubbard s’était mia à boire et avait contracté un ulcère qui avait failli causer sa mort. Hubbard expliquait: ‘’I started drinking Jack Daniel’s to feel good, you know ? Jack Daniel’s and Coca Cola. And I had an ulcer. I went over in London and I fell out. I’ve never passed out, but I lost four pints of blood. And the doctor said, ‘You’re going o clean up your body, because otherwise you’re looking to go.’ So I said, ‘Well, I’m not ready to go, so let me cool out.’’’

Refusant de se laisser abattre, Hubbard avait contribué à garder vivant le flambeau du jazz en contribuant à des cliniques et à des résidences dans de nombreux collèges américains.

Incarnation vivante du hard bop, Hubbard avait remporté plusieurs honneurs au cours de sa carrière. En 2006, la National Endowmnent for the Arts lui avait accordé la plus importante distinction remise à un musicien de jazz aux États-Unis, le NEA Jazz Masters Award. Au début des années 1970, il avait même supplanté Miles Davis dans les sondages organisés afin de désigner le meilleur trompettiste du monde du jazz.

Freddie Hubbard est mort le 29 décembre 2008 à Sherman Oaks, en Californie, à la suite de complications dues à une attaque cardiaque survenue le 26 novembre précédent. Il était âgé de soixante-dix ans. Peu avant son décès, Hubbard avait enregistré un dernier album intitulé ‘’On the Real Side.’’

À la fin de sa vie, Hubbard avait développé des liens étroits avec la Jazz Foundation of America. Hubbard expliquait: ‘’When I had congestive heart failure and couldn't work, The Jazz Foundation paid my mortgage for several months and saved my home! Thank God for those people." À la fin de sa vie, la Fondation avait d’ailleurs assuré les soins de Hubbard par l’entremise de son fonds d’urgence. Après sa mort, les héritiers du trompettiste avaient demandé que des dons admissibles pour fins d’impôt soient faits en son nom à la Jazz Foundation of America.

Considéré comme un des trompettistes les plus importants et les plus innovateurs du bop, du hard bop et du post-bop, Freddie Hubbard s’était progressivement affranchi de l’influence de géants comme Miles Davis et Clifford Brown qui avaient été ses modèles au début de sa carrière pour forger sa propre personnalité musicale. Au cours de sa longue carrière, Hubbard a enregistré plus de cinquante albums sous son nom en plus de collaborer avec les plus importants artistes de jazz de son époque. Peu après sa mort en 2008, le magazine Down Beat avait qualifié Hubbard de ‘’trompettiste le plus puissant et prolifique’’ de l’histoire du jazz (il avait enregistré plus de 300 albums en tout et pour tout, tant comme leader que comme collaborateur). Le critique de jazz Stanley Crouch le considérait comme le trompettiste le plus important et le plus original des quarante dernières années. Crouch précisait: ‘’From the moment he played one note, you knew that was Freddie Hubbard. So he had a sound that was distinctive as Miles Davis, as Louis Armstrong, as Clifford Brown. I mean, he’s one of those trumpet players. He’s also an extraordinary powerful player - great stamina, great range. He swung very hard, was a beautiful ballad player and seemed to have very few limitations in terms of getting through material, whether the material was very simple material or very complex material. He was quite a musician.’’

Le trompettiste Wynton Marsalis considérait Hubbard comme une des principales influences. Il expliquait: ‘’All the trumpet players in the ‘70’s, you can hear Freddie Hubbard’s sound and everything worth playing. He’s such a phenomenal trumpet player - just the largeness of his sound, the velocity and the swing.’’

So the last I heard, the Borderlands movie is releasing this year on August 9th - my birthday.

and like man idk what to tell you, I do not see any way that this movie doesn't end up being dogshit. I almost want to watch it on opening day, despite the thought of this movie making me depressed whenever I think about it.

Everything - from the casting making next to no sense, to the radically different story drafts that have been officially released to describe the plot of the movie over the years, to the NINE YEARS of development hell it's gone through, to Eli Roth directing it, to allegations of a writer undergoing an Alan Smithee-esque alias to separate themselves from the project during reshoots, to Sam Levinson (the guy who made Euphoria and that terrible show starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp) somehow having his hand in the mess somehow - tells me that this is going to be a huge Hollywood turd. I think the production basically threw as many celebrities as they could get to drum up hype based on name recognition alone - Care Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Jamie Lee Curtis - despite knowing that it's gonna be a massive bomb. And I think it's going to embarrass a lot of those people.

I feel particularly bad for Cate Blanchett, I think her playing a character who's portrayed in the games as a woman in her early twenties to mid-thirties is going to cause a lot of people to focus on her age if they pan the movie - the tabloids have already run stories about her looking old in relation to her role in this movie. I feel bad for Kevin Hart having a camera sprung on him by Randy Pitchford so Gearbox could show a behind-the-scenes video at E3. Jack Black will probably be fine, dude is like Teflon, but it can't feel very good to work on a movie if the material isn't good. I don't even know what Jamie Lee Curtis is doing in this movie, but I hope she gets paid I guess.

Like everything in my gut and in my brain is SCREAMING - "THIS IS GOING TO BE A BAD MOVIE". I don't see a future where this isn't one of the worst movies of the year. I feel like by 2027, the cheap gas-station DVD release is gonna be on the shelf at a secondhand store selling for $3, max. And yet by the sheer coincidence of it releasing on my birthday, I almost want to subject myself to the trainwreck out of a sense of misplaced kinship, or bile fascination about sharing a birthday with the embodiment of studio malfeasance - for upselling a movie they know is going to be an abject disaster - and creative bankruptcy.

Now, granted - this is me roasting a movie that hasn't come out. I've barely seen any marketing for it, except a handful of very different story outlines over the nine years that this movie has been in production for. I'm judging the movie very harshly for its cast and for incendiary tabloid drama about the behind-the-scenes aspects of this movie - which simply aren't going to look good, given that it's a movie that's partway through production. It's like looking at a half-made sausage and saying that a restaurant is about to serve you raw pork. I'm being a hater. I'm being an asshole.

But this is one of those things where I would go so far as to blindly double down on my stance and dig my heels in for the long haul. I would bet actual money on the outcome of this movie's release being bad - I think it's gonna be terrible, but I would hedge my bets on it being a mere "bad". I'm convinced.

The Winchesters was officially cancelled by the CW, but Jensen has put out the call for the fandom to fight to give it a new home! Be sure to show your support by using the hashtag #SaveTheWinchesters on all of your social media posts, as well as watching the show on HBO Max. In news semi-unrelated to SPN, Walker: Independence was also cancelled, as well as Kung Fu (written by Bobo Berens from SPN), while Walker was renewed for a 13-episode season. No news, yet, about Gotham Knights. Although the Pond stays firmly in the SPN universe, we support our favorite SPN folks and their new endeavors!

We had two sessions of Competitive Writing Sprints and lots of writers won fabulous prizes while adding words to their WIPs! The next set will probably in a couple of weeks, so keep an eye out for announcements with dates and times!

Sam and Max characters’ hygiene ranked from best to worst:

Sybil Pandemik: She is a career-woman and knows what she is doing. Sybil cares about her appearance and how she is perceived, she is the most likely to give a shit about her hygiene.

Myra Stump: She is a talk-show host on TV and has a large audience. She definitely cares a lot about her hygiene since she acts like a bossy mom.

Santa Claus or the elves: Smells like holiday cheer, one of the best scents.

Momma Bosco: Self-explanatory, she probably smells of 60’s perfume and definitely takes good care of her hygiene.

Agent Superball: He probably smells like a really good cologne and he takes himself extremely seriously.

Grandma Ruth: Ruth probably has that grandma perfume smell that is just extremely nostalgic. She definitely cares about her BO.

The Narrator: He is British and very sophisticated, he takes good care of “himself”.

Jurgen: He is very attention-seeking and cares how other people perceive him. He definitely collects the latest and most popular perfume.

Conroy Bumpus: Sure, he may be involved in animal cruelty, but he seems to care a lot about his appearance. He has a toupee on display with high-security soooooo…. he cares a lot.

MAX FLEISCHER’S SUPERMAN 1941-1943

Warner Bros. Discovery has meticulously remastered Max Fleischer’s treasured set of 17 animated Superman shorts from the original 35mm source elements. Max Fleischer’s Superman 1941-1943 will be available to purchase Digitally on HD and on Blu-ray May 16, 2023.

Superman made his comic book debut in 1938, appearing in Action Comics #1 (dated June 1938, but officially published on April 18, 1938), and the Man of Steel’s popularity grew with his subsequent radio program. Max Fleischer gave the world’s first Super Hero his initial animated spotlight, producing 17 theatrical animated shorts from September 1941 to July 1943 that further elevated the character’s profile, and added many significant aspects to his canon – including coining many of Superman’s patented catchphrases and attributes.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s advanced remastering process began with a 4K, 16-bit scan of Fleischer’s original 35mm successive exposure negative. Staying true to the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.37-to-1, the highest quality raw image was then scanned and then entered into the recombine process – utilizing special proprietary software to merge the successive exposure Technicolor negatives into a single RGB color image. The end result are pristine animated shorts that have been restored to the animators’ originally intended production quality.

Well known radio actors Clayton “Bud” Collyer and Joan Alexander reprised their famed The Adventures of Superman radio show roles for the Fleischer/Famous Studios animated shorts as Superman/ Clark Kent and Lois Lane, respectively. Jackson Beck provided the voice of Perry White and the show’s primary narrator. Additional voices, many of whom had participated in the Superman radio program, were provided by Jack Mercer, Grant Richards, Julian Noa, Lee Royce, Max Smith, Sam Parker and Carl Meyer.

Max Fleischer’s Superman 1941-1943 will be available on May 16, 2023 to purchase Digitally in HD from Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Vudu and more, and on Blu-ray at major retailers both online and in-store.
