Silent Season

A neighborhood so perfect it could have been

cut out of a Hallmark movie or a cover of the

Saturday Evening Post, two story colonials with

porches and picket fences, tree-lined streets,

and a park nearby with a ball field and swings,

and not a child in sight.

In 1962, Rachel Carson wrote about the sad

and disturbing absence of birdsong that year

due to the indiscriminant use of pesticides that

depleted a generation of birds, some nearly to

extinction, and how we often don’t understand

the effects of our technology until it is too late,

y’all can say what you want about gen z being tech dependent but yesterday i googled the coordinates of the moon in relation to my city, opened the compass app on my phone, rotated it until it displayed the correct number and concluded that i would be able to see the moon from my living room window. only then did i look out the window, which was six feet away from me, to see that the moon was, in fact, there.

Fright Night

The sky was grey on Halloween,

the leaves blew down the street,

and all the kiddies went outside

to get their tricks and treats.

The jack O lanterns glimmered

upon their many porches,

a million candles flickering

like smiling, festive torches.

But then it started drizzling,

like steady, sad regret,

and soon it started raining hard

and all the kids got wet.

And all the kids that stayed inside

and planned to go out late

were stuck home with empty bags

with naught to do but wait.

But when I was a youngster,

we’d go out in the rain,

we’d go out even if it were

a cat-4 hurricane.

It could have been a blizzard,

or icy, freezing showers,

we’d grab our bags and trick-or-treat

and not come back for hours.

But kids these days are different,

and parents are too wary,

but once a year, we should face fear

and celebrate what’s scary!
