Blessed by That Which Cursed me.
(A little introspective piece I did on Volo, specifically considering his whole.... Immortality deal. This isn't an RP starter. Tw for Blood mention and implied death, as well as angst in general.)
People seemed to think immortality was a curse. They always talked about it like it was some forbidden, poisoned fruit. They say that someday you'll wish for death. That if you experience it all, then there's nothing left to experience. Nothing left to live for.
Volo can't bring himself to agree.
There were many stories about immortals. Many people who had made deals that they later regretted. Those who wished for death after a while, hundreds of years of living not appealing to them. And some people say that the human brain just wasn't meant to live that long. That it was meant to die.
But Volo.... well he quite liked being alive. He had more time the world than ever, and, if he was being honest instead of dying always put a sour taste in his mouth. This point, he couldn't call himself scared of it, per say. However if he was dead he couldn't fix this broken and injured world. He could not write it wrongs....
So, when his first 'death' came, and he woke up like nothing happened, he was surprisingly pleased. Volo couldn't remember the specifics, his memory wasn't what it used to be. He did, however, remember waking up in a puddle of his own blood, his clothes soaked with it. He had known he was supposed to be dead, and was slightly surprised and admittedly taken a back by his state of not being dead.
Volo thought he knew why. There was certainly an all powerful, Almighty Sinnoh involved, and, perhaps, a bit of Volo's own hubris, thinking he could speak to a deity like that. Volo's attempt to convince the deity must have gotten under the Almighty's skin to wake up in such a state.
If it even had skin?
He should be dead, but he wasn't. Volo wasn't sure if the Almighty meant for immortality to be a punishment or not. It was a little use to wonder why it did such a thing, but Volo entertained himself with the thought.
How ironic it would be for this to be a punishment. After all, it was the greatest boon Volo had ever received from the light born creature that called itself Arceus.
Almighty Sinnoh, he corrected himself. Using the name felt far too intimate. It was a religious word, the name of the creator, the name of the bright star that shon little pity upon this wretched world. Some people may use the name lightly, as a curse or prayer, but Volo knew better.
The Almighty didn't answer his prayers, no matter how he cursed, how he begged or cried to it.
It wasn't about the immortality thing, of course! No, Volo never complained once to the unspeaking heavens about that. But there had been a time Volo was convinced he could reason with Arceus to come back. To return to this world and restore what once was....
The Celestica was a peaceful sort of society. Volo's memory of growing up among them were faded, but he did remember that no one had suffered back then. There wasn't a dry throat or hungry stomach among them. It had made sense then, of course there wasn't strife, no one would suffer under the Light of The Almighty.
Volo remembered the light vividly, the feeling of it. It was always warm, radiating love and approval and care onto the people and pokemon below. It floated above them, the Almighty had never abandoned them, and had always cared about its great creation.
People and pokemon, back them, weren't technically separated as such. Humans were just another type of pokemon, one that varied far more than the rest. It was their defining feature. Volo was sure he had grown up with pokemon as siblings, though he could barely remember their faces now.
Volo didn't remember much of the incident with the red chain, though he remembered both Palkia and Dialga's cries of pain. And he remembered the shadow of the dark deity that flew to their rescue.
He had been told, some time ago, stories of what happened that day. Of the devastation wrecked upon the humans, of the dark, eldritch pokemon that had been sealed away by the light. Of the Almighty retreating.
All he remembered, however, was that the light had seemed much colder, much more disapproving, before it left him, and his people, forever.
Without the Almighty's guidance, the Celestica people were left to ruin. Pokemon and humans were separated as pokemon attacked them, and the Celestica had to fight for their lives. Most fled, cutting down forests to make boats. Those who didn't, died. Not always to pokemon, of course, but... Well, disease and starvation were never an issue under the Almighty Sinnoh's Light.
There had been too many deaths for Volo to count. He wasn't sure if it was a divine miracle that he survived himself, or if he had simply gotten lucky.
Volo had been only a child when their great, almighty Sinnoh had abandoned them. He grew, as a young man, surviving in the harsh world, watching the people around him- his people, die. In the end, he had simply decided that bringing back the Almighty was the only way to save them all from dying.
Eventually, through some means Volo forgets, he managed to find the deity. The light didn't feel... Right, however. Where the light had been warm love and pride, now only stood caution and apprehension.
Volo doesn't know how that conversation went, but he does know that is how he woke in a pool of his own blood.
After that, he found he couldn't die. And, yes, he did suffer through the heartache of seeing his loved ones die, but he would have suffered that regardless. He ended up burying many friends.
The stories about immortality that you get so harmed by seeing it over and over again that you simply stop caring and become numb to everything around you. No, Volo wasn't numb to death. It was more like any other tragedy. It became a part of the process of grief. He would forget about them, eventually, only for them to be brought up by a random memory, and he would feel the sadness and laughter he had shared with them.
He missed them, he did, but he had accepted they were gone. It still hurt, of course, but Volo never stopped caring.
Well, not until the Plan, anyways.
Now, you must forgive him but Volo considers himself to be very stubborn and very clever, more so than the average person. Perhaps that was his hubris talking again, but it's not inaccurate. Volo had a silver tongue and sharp wits that came naturally to him, and now his mind only focused on what he had to restore.
And Volo... Well, he had a lot of alone time on his hands. After most of his people had left and the rest had nearly died out, Volo knew the only way he was saving his people, saving his world, was to force the Almighty Sinnoh to fix what it had broken!
Even if that meant Volo had to erase this world and make a new one, he would do it. Stubborn as he was he made a promise to himself that the Celestica people would return and he would save them no matter the cost.
People would hate him if they knew, so he hides it. He hides it behind smiles and gentle nods and silver tongued lies. It works. No one truly suspected his motives, and how could they? By the time others returned to this land, only legends remained.
Of course it all came unraveled when the Almighty's chosen appeared. Volo doesn't like to think about why the Almighty sent them, it gives him to much hope that he might have succeeded otherwise.
He wonders if he'll see them again, far in the future, when he is older than the trees and they are merely but a dream. He wonders if they will recognize him, what they'll do. Volo wonders if they will be returned at all, or if they'll simply be abandoned, as his people were.
In any case... He leaves. He leaves the land they now call 'Sinnoh', a name as butchered as the remains of his long dead culture. They bastardized it, he thinks grimly, the clans claiming to be the descendants of the Celestica people who left, now back to claim their homeland, as well as the colonists who came much later.
How silly a thought it truly is. As if anyone could claim that place, it belonged to the pokemon. They were the only ones truly fit to rule a place like that. Volo should know.
With his plan foiled, Volo stows away on the next ship out of there, and sails off to other lands. He hopes to not see his homeland again until he can repair the damage to it. He prays, as the landmass shrinks into the fog on the horizon.
Well....Arceus never replied to his prayers anyways, but it's the thought that counts, Volo supposes.

"It is god-like," he corrected, Rayquaza, in his opinion, didn't hold a candle to the magnificence that was the Almighty Sinnoh.
"It seems to manipulate weather, wind, and air." He noted, writing furiously in his notebook, "It could be using that manipulation to create its 'voice'.'
Clover was hanging out around the sky pillar, she had arrived to do some exploring however currently she was just checking her notes about the place from asking the locals around the region. And as she was reading she couldn't help but wonder what type of discoveries she might find, that is if archeologists or other mythologists hadn't removed anything from the sky pillar and she did know it was a likely possibility. She was also rather excited as exploring sky pillar would give her a chance to study the Pokémon that live within the massive ruined tower as well as how the species adapt the higher up the tower they lived as well. "If my knowledge is correct, lots of dark type pokemon should live in the tower oddly enough, heh, and I personally thought there would be a lot of flying types. Then again I can only assume something happened during ancient times in Hoenn that caused the tower to become abandoned." She would say to herself as she was steeling herself up to enter into the tower.
"Dark types? Well, that's a shame!"
A voice came from behind her, nearly directly behind her, interrupted her.
He wore a heavy black coat, and a blur backpack. His golden hair was tied up in a bun behind his head, save for his bangs, which covered one of his silver eyes.

Volo's grin widened, and there was a bit of a crazed gleam in his eyes. They sparkled with ambition, glee, and absolute, all consuming desire. He stepped forwards, looking to the heavens to see if he could see the Pokemon.
"Evidently..." He murmured, "There does live at least one who can do that."

Popping in to ask if you wouldn't mind a curious mythologist/researcher to pop into asks to rp
(I wouldn't mind at all! Sorry if I'm late to this ask, Tumblr didn't notify me. But yeah, message me and we can work out the details!)

A Strange Encounter
Volo's journey to find this Pokemon had been, for lack of a better word, hectic.
It had taken several mountains he had to climb, a cave or two he had to dash through, and more potions than he could count to heal up his team. The Cornet Highlands were difficult to navigate, even if he wasn't training his team along the way. After taking a rest where Pokemon wouldn't find him, Volo once again brought out his team, and continued his search once more. This would be the time he found it. This would be the time he finally found who he was looking for.
It had to be. He had no other leads. If this fell through then he could do nothing but live in this forsaken world for all eternity.
Almighty Sinnoh give me strength.
Volo found himself in an underground cavern. There was, according to some legends, a point here where reality distorted and turned sour. The stories had used much more flowery language but Volo was in a mood to reminisce about prose. He had a deity to find.

"Ah!" He responded with a chuckle, "How terrifying! I'm shocked!"
"Boo!"

Koemi certainly was not expecting that. However, she couldn’t help but giggle. This person seemed very fun to be around. Giving them a soft smile, she wrote something down in her book and showed it to the mysterious man.
Boo!

Volo smiled casually, not seeming concerned at all.
"It will be a bit harder to communicate without your help Cogita. Perhaps we should find a way to do so before we head out."
@girl-from-the-rift
Something unexpected happened. Alexia had gone missing. She said she was going to explore ruins to find Pokemon. It was a good start to search for her.
Volo didn't hear about her disappearance. Not at first, at least. It was only when he passed by a base camp set up by the Galaxy team, that he was told. He was told to be careful, to keep an eye out just in case he spotted her, then left to his own devices.
He was mildly curious about it, but not too concerned. She would be found, passed out probably, and even if she wasn't, it wouldn't matter in the end. Volo had his own matters to attend to, such as scouring a set of ruins he had likely dug through before.
It was a coincidence he chose the same ruins as Alexia had disappeared in. Volo wondered, as he dusted off dirt and rubble from a pillar, if someone was to blame for her disappearance. Even then he wasn't too fussed about it, he could handle himself. Still, he glanced up and around him, taking in the setting. It was better safe than sorry.

"Oh, merely curiosity!" Volo chuckled, "Who wouldn't be curious about the rift? Especially if someone fell through it. Who knows what else could come through it! Or what may be lurking inside!"
Volo continued, without giving the warden the time to answer, "What do you remember of your time before you came to Hisui?"
"Why, Warden Ingo, it's a pleasure to find you here! I hope you're doing well, along with lady Sneasler of course!"
"While I have your attention, I was hoping to ask you a few questions about that rift you fell through! I suppose that's old news to most of Hisui, but I'm still VERY interested in your story... Care for a chat?"
- @ginkgoguildmembervolo
"Thank you for the well-wishes!" He replied with a polite nod. "I hope you are doing well as well as of late."
Ingo seemed to pause to think when the other asked about the rifts, though. "I.. suppose so, yes. I can't promise I will have any information of interest though, and I apologize for that. What sort of questions do you have for me today?"

"I see..." Volo turned to Alexia, "But it is still dangerous out in the wild, even for a Pokemon. I wouldn't go alone if I were you!"

"My thoughts exactly!" Volo put a hand on his hip, "Now, hypothetically of course, would going back through the rift not reverse those effects? Or would you simply go back to wherever you were without any memories at all? That would be quite unfortunate if so, do you not think so?"

"No one can remember every part of their life." Volo agreed, "But, you don't suppose the rift, or however you got to Hisui, is the cause of your memory problems, do you? Perhaps, if you did fall through it, you could have seen something that overwhelmed your mind."
