🎀Oyavaski's BakuDeku Fic Masterlist🎀

Under the cut are some of my all time favorite BakuDeku fics I've ever come across on A03. They range in ratings from Teen to Mature to Explicit. The majority will be Explicit because I prefer more adult themes over toothrotting fluff (mostly for the miscommunication and drama that spurs from intimate romances lol) So be sure to pay attention to ratings before considering clicking the links 😏👌

"Three things dawned on Izuku, as he stared at the slick flower petals scattered over the black words of his book: he has fallen in love with his husband, his husband did not love him back, and he is going to die." <- Izuku is a fae cursed from birth, never to fall in love lest his love go unrequited. Hanahaki Disease trope done very well.

I Still Do by RaeRyn

"He's losing him to pieces, but Izuku still tries to make them count. In which a battle leaves Katsuki with Amnesia, and Izuku finds himself picking up the pieces." <- perfect summary description. Heart breaking dialogue exchanges and concept. One of my treasured fics.

Many Sunflowers Later by Jeka

"Scholar Midoriya Izuku comes back to the person he left behind after his journey through the kingdom, the mighty dragon clan leader Bakugou Katsuki." <- A super precious and unique take on the Fantasy AU. It's a short one, but I guarantee it'll warm your soul like homemade stew on a frigid winter morning.

The Way You Used To Do by Edema_Ruh

"During a battle, Midoriya gets hit by a villain whose quirk detaches his soul from his body. Stuck in a ghost-like state, the boy enters a race against time in order to save himself from permanently dying. Much to his luck - or lack of it -, the only person who can see and talk to him in this state is no one other than Kacchan. Alternatively: Deku and Kacchan are Soul Bound." <- quite possibly the most popular and well written/nearly perfect canon characterization BakuDeku fic currently out there. Very worth the read, and enough insanely detailed chapters to keep you reading for a week or more lol.

Mature Rating:

The Night We Met by Majjale

" "You a poet?" "Only for you." Two sincere wishes and the ramifications of them."<- part one of the Dead Poets series. A simple summary for a Deeply Painful fic that will Hurt You until it doesn't. I've reread this, and it's epilogue fic, over a dozen times now. It's seriously so beautifully written.

Take Me Back by Majjale

"A soft epilogue." <- epilogue to The Night We Met, and part two of Dead Poets. A fitting end for our heros after the events in the first part of Dead Poets. Made me cry like a babybackbitch.

Imperial Retrograde by Mynameis152

"Raised on a continent at the brink of war, Katsuki and Izuku's sides were chosen the day they were born. But now, as Katsuki's birth right is stripped of him and handed to a foreign prisoner, as Izuku's stolen from his home in the dead of night to fight for an enemy nation because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time, the two are forced to find common ground with each other, and end a war heading towards total annihilation."<- A wonderful Fantasy AU fic set in a universe/kingdom where harboring a dragon is punishable by death. And our poor Izuku just so happened to accidentally hatch a dragon he didn't intend to find!

I Feel You by Soulstring

" "I don't always take questionable substances from strangers but when I do I end up getting a second hand boner from my childhood friend's feelings" - Midoriya Izuku, most likely."<- Izuku meets a girl with an empathy quirk that manifests in the form of a goo that she bottles and offers it to him as a gift for rescuing her from a kidnapper. Izuku becomes addicted to the goo because of the intense feelings it gives him, and Katsuki has a few issues with that.

"(Based in an AU where All Might loses to All For One) Follow Izuku and Katsuki as they fight together for their very survival and mature through their experiences with each other, on the run together from the League of Villains with no one to depend on but each other. The two will have to work out their differences if they want to continue to live and escape the villains."<- summary explains it pretty well. Haven't read this in quite a while so I don't have much to elaborate on.

Fire In The Mountains/Fire In The Blood by EllaBesmirched(El_Bell)

" “I’ll do it.”

Enji finally turned around and fixed Shouto with an expression so scathing, Shouto had to fight to keep his chin raised. “You’ll marry the Barbarian King.”

Shouto blinked. “Yes.” " <- A polycule masterpiece. I've reread this series no-less than 12 times by now. Incredibly detailed, insanely well written and fleshed out characters. Polygamous relationships and multiple pairings throughout. Main pairs are TodoBaku/TodoBakuDeku/BakuDenkiMinaKiriTodoDeku. It's honestly fantastic, I highly recommend it.

Kacchan by KyuukaKoinu

"Sometimes it’s about winning an argument. Other times it’s about acknowledging your feelings. And in rare cases, it’s about trying to make sense about your ex-childhood friend making out with you in your mother’s kitchen when he swears that he hates your guts. But most of the time, it’s about growing up and understanding what makes the difference between a boy and a man. Both Katsuki and Izuku are finding this out, and they are figuring it out in the hardest way."<- OK so, I can totally look past the almost word-for-word plagiarism of the summary for Boys by CaseyV (the greatest SoRiku fanfic ever fucking made, thank you) because this story was really fucking good. And the character development and progression throughout the plot is fluid and doesn't feel forced at any point. Katsuki coming to accept his sexuality and love for Izuku, Izuku being bullied by his peers for his obvious affection for Footballplayer!Katsuki, and all the drama that lies throughout between two boys learning to accept their feelings and an older man Izuku seeks comfort in from his issues with Katsuki.

Vicious by feelslikefire

"Midoriya and Bakugou wind up in the very last position either of them thought they'd be in: Hero Partners. It's not fun, but they learn to cope. Their first big assignment together takes them undercover to infiltrate a cult, but the situation turns out far more sinister than they first thought. (Or: Midoriya and Bakugou pretend to be Fake Married, join a cult, start having sex, and learn not to suck as partners, not necessarily in that order.)"<- where do I even BEGIN??? This fic has. It. All. Fake marriages, Fake relationships, an insane scary ass cult, hardcore bondage sex, friends with benefits, an insanely well thought out plot that will keep you hooked. Seriously worth the read. I've reread it multiple times and I'll probably reread it again soon once my glasses are repaired lol.

Play The Field by Lalazee

"Baseball and feelings, feelings and baseball. Turns out, Bakugou and Deku are both good and bad at the same things. They try to work on it"<- in which Izuku and Katsuki were aiming to go pro in Baseball, until Izuku's good arm is mangled in a serious accident that creates a crevasse between himself and his relationship with Katsuki. Been a while since I've read this one, but anything by Lalazee is worth the read!!

Blood Moon by Lalazee

"The Thank-Fuck-We-Aren’t-Dead Sex had started then, and had never really stopped. Then came the feelings and the fights. The ego, the pride, the jealousy. And then there was Us (The one-shot smut fic that turned into an entire world for you.)"<- the very first BakuDeku fic I ever read, and an AMAZING way to start. The horny dial is sex to MAXIMUM. (OK so I made an error here, but I think "horny dial is SEX to MAXIMUM is better kept than fixed so fuck it LOOOL)

So there we have it!!! I spent a good hour or so jotting all this down. So I hope ya'll see a few you haven't read yet and give them a shot!

I've a lot of bookmarks in my AO3 profile and I needed to make a list with all those wonderful stories!

Izuku takes in a stray on one rainy night, except it's not a dog, it's a dog shifter who goes by the name, Katsuki. After the initial wave of panic and embarrassment, Izuku thinks his new pet/roommate is pretty cute.

8- Misfire by deplore

Life's difficult when you're a teenager and your hormones make you lose control of your quirk. Alternately: A PG-13 version of "Sex Sent Me To The ER."

The pleasant sensation that comes from kissing Bakugou – the knowledge that it’s because he’s touching Bakugou so intimately that’s got Bakugou making such vulnerable noises – it tingles satisfyingly underneath his skin in a way that almost feels like when he activates One for All.

– and then there’s the sickening sound of something snapping just as Midoriya realizes, half a second too late, that the feeling is actually exactly like when he activates One for All.

9- Sugar Stardust by milkcandie

Between baking pretty macarons and sculpting wedding cakes, Katsuki slowly falls in love with a certain green-haired coworker who has effervescent stars in his eyes. Maybe working as a pastry chef in Nowhere, Japan isn't so bad after all, especially when he’s in such close proximity to a boy who manages to beautify every little thing in his presence.

A pâtisserie AU where Katsuki and Izuku are really the perfect ingredient for each other.

10- Gravity by warschach [Explicit & Omegaverse]

Izuku is back in his hometown and plenty hasn't changed much from the 8 years he was gone. Except, Katsuki Bakugou, the alpha king of their small town. He's hotter- because that's fair, right, God? -, stronger, a now-famous pro fighter, and noticeably nicer this round.

Not that he cares, pfft.

Ha, Izuku Midoriya caring about Katsuki Bakugou, thinking he's pretty cute and not half bad once you get past the asshole persona; though that gargantuan ego of his could take a dive off a very tall cliff.

Izuku looked back down at his menu and flipped the page, a small smile on his face. “Nothing.”

Katsuki glared at Izuku from across the table. “If it was nothing then you wouldn’t be staring at me.”

“It’s just a little funny watching you try to look your best for our date when you always look great anyway,” Izuku explained. He wouldn’t look up from his menu while he spoke, but his words remained ingrained with confidence nevertheless. He considered what he was saying to be fact, and nothing else. “Even when you’re not trying in front of the cameras, it’s still hard to take my eyes off of you.”

Zombie apocalypse, more than a third of the population currently dead or in the state of undead, and Katsuki still somehow managed to get his shit stolen by two chicks and Freckle boy.

Izuku caught himself moving forward, his head tilted somewhat to the side, and his eyes shot wide open. His gaze met Katsuki’s half-lidded eyes now that he was no longer in a dreamlike state, and seeing the way Katsuki was looking at him—waiting for him—made him realize Katsuki would’ve let him do it. He might have even wanted him to do it.

“You’re both doing fabulous!” the photographer called out to them, packing his camera into his bag and getting ready to leave. “I just got word that what we have now should be good, so we’ll stop there. Thank you for your time! Lock the door on your way out after you change.”

The pair stayed frozen in place, with Izuku’s arms around Katsuki’s neck and Katsuki’s hands resting on Izuku’s waist, while the photographer and his supervisor left.

“Kacchan,” Izuku cooed once they were gone. “Did you want to…?”

15- I'll Hold You In My Heart by InkspillsNotebook

When a threat from the past comes to light, the budding romance between Prince Katsuki Bakugou and Prince Izuku Midoriya is put on hold as Katsuki struggles to save the love of his life, and Izuku puts up with being turned into a swan.

I found this prompt and I wanted to do it for Bakugou's birthday but I'm a bit late:

Person 1 complaining about how long the walk to wherever is, and Person 2 constantly telling them to shut up and that they’re almost there. After Person 1 doesn’t stop complaining, Person 2 picks Person 1 up like a child and tells them that’s what they get for complaining like a child, and carries them all the way there.

“If you’re going to act like a fussy goddamned brat, I’m going to treat you like one.”

Really I just wanted to write adult Izuku getting a piggyback ride from Kacchan.

Some of the students from class 1-A decide to go out to dinner together for the evening. Midoriya hadn't planned to joined them, but it's no surprise that he's under the table fooling around with Bakugou. In an attempt to create a new genetic pattern in the Rabbit-Hybrid Gene, Izuku Midorya is paired with a very strange (and almost unorthodox) stud. The end goal is blonde haired, red eyed rabbits- though only one Alpha truly fits that bill.

When you find the soul that is perfectly matched to your own, any mark that appears on their skin will appear on yours, as well. Everyone knows that.

Midoriya knows it... but, somehow, he's never imagined it happening to him.

Bakugou knows it, too... but he doesn't have time for stupid things like that.

And, although both of them know that Fate is never wrong... there have got to be exceptions. After all, this match cannot possibly be anything but a mistake. Right?

38- One Exception by GreyLiliy

If you’d have told Katsuki when he was in middle school that every day after his shift he’d come home to Deku waiting with a soft smile and dinner, he’d have laughed and set off an explosion in your face. But Deku is stubborn, Katsuki was weak, and now they share a home.

Routine is broken, however, when a Villain makes himself known by taking the lives of Pro Heroes with no trace of motive. With the entire Hero community on edge, Katsuki can only be grateful that Deku has given up on his childish Hero dreams and is safe at home instead of in the line of fire.

Kirishima had another stupid idea, and Katsuki had nothing to lose. Then, he discovered a witty, freckled, attractive stranger, and he had everything to gain.

In other words, the Grindr AU no one asked for but everyone secretly needed.

40- Matchmakers by Trashreciptical

When Katsuki agreed to be Jirou's wingman at a school dance for his students he expected to be bored out of his mind, he expected to laugh at his students suffering trying to communicate with the opposite sex, and he expected being subjected to shitty pop music all night.

What he wasn't expecting was the gorgeous teacher from the other school with forests in his eyes and stars on his cheeks....fuck he has it bad.

In which Katsuki is a chemistry teacher that is one explosion away from being fired and Izuku is the adorable english teacher from a different school, who sweeps Katsuki off of his feet and he doesn't know what to do.

41- Between ink and thorns by soulstring

There are a lot of things people are amazed at when it comes to Bakugou Katsuki. The thing that stands out the most – especially since it comes from a man with so little patience and an explosive temperament – is his unsuspecting love for botany. In an ideal world he would look after his flower shop and get paid for it without having to deal with an annoying element attached to his work; namely bother, namely aggravation, namely humans.

And that day, the worst of them is about to enter his flower shop and his life.

Izuku falls in love with the foul-mouthed tattoo artist next door.

43- Unknown Number: I Love You by Lillabelle

Opposites attract right? Well that's what Midoriya's friend, Uraraka, thinks. Her friend from another school talked about another guy, Bakugou Katsuki, and the two girls decided the two were perfect for each other. Now Midoriya is left with the number of a guy he didn't even know.

How bad could it be?

44- How IKEA Sells All Their Beds by thankyouforexisting

The next day, Kacchan turns on the cold water while Izuku is showering, resulting in a screaming match that the whole floor gets involved in, and soap bars starts flying everywhere, while Mineta throws his purple balls so that people can grab onto them and not slip on the wet floor, earning a “You’re not that bad, dude,” from Kirishima (It's a lie. Literally everybody hates him). Aizawa punishes them all by making them run laps for an hour the next morning.

Two days later, Izuku retaliates by lowering the thermostat until Kacchan can’t summon fire to burn his clothes, and Iida appears in the doorway holding a flag and shouting, “JUSTICE FOR CLOTHES! NO MORE DESTRUCTION OF FABRIC! WE MUST FIGHT THIS STRIKE AGAINST THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY, COMRADES!”

Kacchan rips the thermostat from the wall with his fire cannons and burns the flag, half of Izuku’s wardrobe, and his bed.//Deku and Kacchan are roommates, and everyone fears for their safety.

45- Yes, They're All Safe by teaandtumblr

Villains have entered UA grounds and are disposed of just as quickly, but that doesn't mean a headcount of the students doesn't need to be done. Toshinori would admit, he wasn't quite prepared for what he found in Bakugou Katsuki's room.

46- I’ll share this with you, so leave it behind by yabakuboi [Single Dad!Izuku]

For the sake of the story, All Might is never in need of a successor, and, when Izuku saves Katsuki from the sludge monster, encourages young Midoriya down a different path. Thus, Katsuki and Izuku part ways after junior high, as Katsuki enters U.A. and the Midoriyas move overseas. It’s later that Katsuki realizes that there’s something missing, that he drove that something away.

Years after, Katsuki finds him in the last place he looks, in the cereal aisle at the local grocery store of their childhood neighborhood.

Katsuki was never sure what happened to his childhood friend, quirkless Izuku who had presented as an omega and was whisked away to a traditional matchmaking house. Katsuki never saw him again after that, and tried to convince himself it was for the best. Many lonely years pass before he finds Izuku in the last place he ever wanted to, in the middle of a battlefield with a child clutching to his shirt.

Hey, i’m really trying to find the fanfic where villains took over the city and deku and kacchan have to evade them. and at a point in the story aizwa came in to train them and they were in a cave. and todoroki was siding with the villains

hey guys, i love your page! but i need help finding a story about how deku and katsuki are running from all for one and like all the heroes have been hiding and their friends are locked away. they are found by aizawa to train them to get stronger. and then they figure out tordoriki is working with all for one.

I know the fic you’re talking about! Aah, the good ol’ bkdk classics.. Quick note though! The fic is technically classed as ‘abandoned’ due to how long it has been since it was updated, but the main story is in fact complete, so we haven’t marked it as such. The author says in the author notes the missing chapter is one focusing on Todoroki, rather than bk & dk.

The two will have to work out their differences if they want to continue to live and escape the villains.

Izuku will have to become stronger to finish what All Might started, meanwhile Katsuki will figure out his feelings for his new companion while slowly overcoming some of his bad habits.

Ohoo!! *___* Yes, do I have a handful of them! Time to go through mypersonal notes and share what I’ve saved!

First up are some of my fav prolificauthors (and their well-known, must-read fics), whose attention to detail, emotionaldepth, and characterizations I trust and therefore I would read anything they write of the pair:

@atomicblonde/lalazee (Blood Moon), for writingsome of the most riveting emotional roller coasters, whose power with words anddialogue can both raze mountains and completely swoon you asunder with theirintensity. All her fics are worth reading (and there are plenty!) But I thinkthe one that particularly touched me most was Ugly Beautiful. :’)

@driftingglass (Before Midnight), forwriting some of the most immersive stories coiled with gripping and buildingtension, both plot wise and relationship wise. Also has one of the mostdescriptive and intense voices. And for writing a Deku with thedetermined/defiant agency he deserves.

@soulestring/soulstring(Falling, I feel you), for some ofthe most emotionally raw & vulnerable scenes of feelings realization I’veseen. Through all the extensive denial, fear, reluctance, and passion towardslove. Chronic emotional constipation at its crippling worst and most beautifullyrewarding. Oho, I’ve reread these many times for just how strongly they stuckwith me. (Also features Kiri as a valuable mvp, oh thank goodness

@osakakitty (Make Every Moment Last,Like the Moon), mmm,for a finesse with sweeping/honest tenderness with enough resonance to make oneweep. I know many readers who have fallen victim to it. Not from sadness, butfrom just how thoroughly touching and profound her stories are. :’) What ablessing, indeed.

@kanaevr/Kanae_vR(The Space Between), forwriting with an awareness and careful handling of both the characters and plotthat I could best describe as sincere.The detailed realism and slice of life aspects are both relatable and fun, which contribute towards a whole,well-rounded package that is thoroughly engaging to read.

Next, aside from the many works available from the authors above, are some fav individual fics that I’mparticularly fond of:

In the Eye of the Storm by @cheshirebutton,THE iconic naga au. If there’s one fic in the fandom I’d consider my fav, I think it’d be this one. Which I’ve read 5+ times, and would definitely reread again. 8D Ilove it that much. Everything is handled with so much impressive quality and care;almost anything introduced has a purpose that will become relevant again later(which is why rereading is so fun). From the impeccable world building to thecharacterizations, the absolute stakes and peril involved that drives them towardsbelievable, life-altering decisions (the weightthey must consider between duty and personal feelings)…from the wedges thatkept them stubbornly apart, towards a curious magnetism and blooming/meaningfulsolidarity that brings them closer together even stronger. :’)) This is classicenemies to reluctant allies to lovers done beautifully, and has me convinced oftheir mutual feelings 1000%. Omg, they feel somuch. ;A; Whenever there’s a ch update I have to immediately dropeverything because it’s just thatgood, ahhh.

Hunting the Past by Justaperson1718, theassassin and blackmailed!bodyguard au! 8D Which happens to be my fav actionfic. It’s so smart and fast-paced, from all the convoluted planning and tensesteps involved to set things right, damn! We have these expertly specializedpros, extremely capable in their respective fields…but who are also fumblingdorks unaccustomed to sorting out their feelings and properly communicating(esp after all the conditioning/exp they’ve been through). It’s so fun to watch them executemissions and then transition to the domestic (yet still very muchliving on edge) down time with them learning to bond while taking care ofKouta. Unexpected surrogate action parents due to dire circumstances, aha!

The Mummy by Spectra, my favadventure fic. A retelling of the classic movie, but done so well and with style. Probably some of the most genuine fun I’vehad reading fics in this fandom, ahaha what a riot. XD From the crazyshenanigans they get caught up in to the wholesome heh copious amount ofbonding from their time together. Truly, all scenes are extremely well paced andallotted for the type of ‘meat’ readers are in for. Kacchan is so comically (andseriously) overprotective of Deku, omg I love it. (Considering the endlesstypes of human & undead enemies after them, ahh!) Bonus, Kiri is such a goodaccompanying bro, what a delight.

Some Read It For The Articlesby low_commotion,for some of the nerdiest awkward dork bonding, from their shared seriousinterest in hero mags, to their more hands-on practical applications in the gymtogether (ayyy!! ;D)…all while everyone else in the class assumes it’s over‘something else’ and blows it out of proportion (oho~ but things ARE slowlyhappening!) It’s such a hilarious and witty slow burn scenario where they helpeach other improve, but I think what really shines are the faithfulcharacterizations. The angst and feels truly got me in this ‘what-if’ scenario where Dekunever earned ofa, never went to U.A., and slowly became so jaded/bitter athaving to settle for something other than his dream, his growing envywitnessing Kacchan achieve his burned too much to bear. It’s such a fascinating and segmented Deku characterstudy where he has to discover what he really wants in life, with plenty ofmeta jabs at canon that had me going whoa!!! :O Plus Kacchan is as patient andaccommodating to Deku’s pace as he can be. :’) (Which…became another point ofcontention for Deku, to not hold him back from becoming the best…yet I love the counter, ‘I don’thave everything; I don’t have you.’ fuufjgkgh!!! ;A;)

Collision by stardustacademia(cosmiclarents), one of the most thorough and in-depth looks into Kacchan’spsyche and angst I’ve seen, but it’s unfortunately been deleted. :’(( Noting itanyway for remembrance’s sake.

Ambivalent by bakuboi ohdang this was such a unique approach to Kacchan’s pov and source of his anger I’veseen, and impressive writing insight for being anime-only too.

A Haze of Crystal by semiautomatichearts,ooh I really enjoyed the emotional depth in this one; the author has anotherhanahaki story I’m keeping an eye on as well.

hi anon!!!

Well, i got started in the manga when it only a few chapters long and i just followed it on and off since then. i didn’t really get into shipping around 2 years ago and bakugou’s character arc started to developed and he’s slowly and surely changing with the effort of himself, people around him, and the circumstances influencing him grow from the arrogant brat who see very little value in others to someone who knew what he did to deku was incredibly shitty and to see beyond just a person’s quirk. it also really help me see the potential of them together when i was reading ‘on the run’ by justaperson1718 . it’s my top ten most fav fics in the fandom!!! i go back and reread it all the time bc the redemption arc that the author give to bakugou was SO SATISFYING and the way he try soooooo hard and changed himself for his and izuku’s relationship so it could developed into something more made me so happy :)))).

im a sucker for a good redemption story (zuko is my fav absolute from atla for reasons like this)!!!! i just really like to see him grow in his potential as a hero and as a person because you can be a great hero but doesn’t make you a good person and i want to see that from bakugou in the future as he climbs the rank with deku :D. now to talk about their dynamic, i usually don’t like to ship former bully/victim it kinda left a sour taste in my mouth but seeing his char grow and his arc being developed with so much care and thought in canon really changed my mind in the end and how much deku still deeply cares for him!!! HE DOESN’T HATE HIM!!!! and honestly, i really believe in giving ppl a second chances and we shouldn’t be defined by our past esp when we make the effort to learned from it and be better. i fucked up a lot when i was younger that im pretty sure you and everyone else would have easily find reason to hate me for it but i have learned and grown from that experience and i hope now im ok enough that ppl don’t see my past and think wow she was such a horrible person then and still is right now ///o\\. so yea, second chances and redemption story are something im extremely weak too (MAN this make me want to talk about winter soldieresque villain au of deku about how deku dreamt of being a hero but ended up being manipulated into being a villain and the long road of redemption deku has to go through to become hero).

also bc my fav headcanon that once bakugou falls in love with deku he LIT can’t control his feelings for deku and is always fighting against how MUCH HE LOVES DEKU AND IT’S FRUSTRATES HIM LIKE NOTHING ELSE and how it’s karmatic justice for all the past bullying he did bc now it’s fucking whipped for deku :DDDDD.

lol none of this is very coherent sorry ABOUT THAT A;SJSDF;SJD. but basically i have always been partial to childhood friends more than anything and rivilship gives a little spice into the relationship so LOL it makes it even more interesting to me. and i saw the potential in bakudeku when bakugou’s growth in canon is being developed and he’s changing to be a better person and how deku doesn’t hate him despite his past actions against deku and maybe in spite of it, deku still values bakugou and sees him just as important as all might in his life and that makes me weak bc SO MUCH HISTORY AND SIDE TO THEIR RELATIONSHIP.

I’m leaving it to my top five picks because… it’s really hard to pick from the massive pool of talent-driven works I’ve read… honestly there are sooo many that I hold so close to my heart, but I can’t list them all here because I need to trust my ultimate favorites and, yeah.

Also I’m only posting one favorite per author, because there are always multiple favorites with each writer but it helps narrow it all down if I do it this way.

Oh, and these works that I have finished reading. Okay. So. I think this is… probably my favorite oneshot work from the Hunter x Hunter fanfiction archive. This is just, absolutely phenomenal and heartbreaking and filled with angst and threads of hope and Killua and Gon are so interesting to observe through the eyes of multiple characters as tension and difficulties come into light. Oh, speaking of that, the level of suspense and buildup is just… ah. This is great, from beginning to end and I’ve read it dozens of times.

Words That Water Flowers by @decembercamiecherries

I’ve definitely sung praises for this fic before, but it’s seriously, without a doubt, one of the most tightly written, creative Alternate Universe Killua/Gon stories. Killua and Gon’s relationship feels so raw and real, and the Hanahaki Disease is difficult to capture well in most settings, but I’m so glad that the concept behind this was taken in such an intriguing direction, and it allowed us into a very canon-like appreciation of Gon and Killua’s friendship/relationship.

Lawfully Unwedded by @xyliane

I love this work mostly because of how believable it feels each time I read it. It’s mostly very sweet, but there’s a certain… candor, to it, that feels so refreshing when regarding the question on whether or not Killua and Gon would actually get married if they had the chance. I love the pacing, how the topic is handled, and I’m afraid if I say anything else it’ll spoil it. Please read it and leave lovely words behind for this talented writer.

Motor Scooters and Gelato by @fireolin

I never get tired of reading this story. I was honestly very torn between either posting this as my favorite from this author or Fireworks on Whale Island, which also displays this writer’s very sensible talents. The writing style is emotive, sensitive, and allows plenty of room to breathe, if that makes sense. You really feel every moment with Killua and Gon in this sweet, beautifully constructed piece. Honestly, reading this will make you just shine from the inside.

So. Um. There are many, and I mean many, works by this writer that are just jaw-dropping in the Hunter x Hunter fandom. I can’t even express how lovely everything they write is. But, I can only pick one per author… so, this one it is. Honestly, this story resonates with growing up, the angst and pain that radiates through Killua and Gon’s friendship, and so many more aspects of their relationship that come into light as they reunite as adults. The writing is marvelous and poetic and beautiful. I can’t recommend this enough.

AH. I’M A HORRIBLE PERSON FOR NOT FINISHING THIS. I’ve listened to this heart-racing and solemn and wonderfully voice-acted piece almost to the very end, and that’s not a testament to Shawn’s talent because he’s brilliant. Now, this is the first audio fic I’ve ever listened to and if you haven’t listened to that many (or any) and are skeptical like I was, please give it a chance. The characterization of Killua in this is intriguing and different, and very refreshing. There’s so much passion and love put into this and you can feel it through each chapter/audio.

Okay, I love how this is written. I honestly do. I’ve read up to… chapter nine, or so, dozens of different times and kept trying to push through to the finish and just fell off for no other reason aside from my forgetfulness. This fic, though, I think, is honestly one of the best in the Hunter x Hunter archive. The characterization is interesting, especially with Gon, and I love how smooth the pacing and writing is and the take on each prompt is creative and fresh.

THIS. FIC. Is so… heavy. The pacing and the tension and the buildup are all brilliantly woven together, and I do realize that this story was actually recently completed. I’m planning on going through from the very beginning and reading it to the very end because it’s enthralling and wonderful, and I believe I stopped around the eighth chapter. Please, read this. It’s incredible.

Okay, so, um, it was really difficult to choose between this story and the equally masterful and wonderful character-driven piece, Make Every Moment Last. Both works are wonderful, but there’s something very raw and open about how she portrays the relationship between Katsuki and Izuku in her works, and… ah. Osakakitty has a fantastic, insightful view on these beloved characters and I adore how she writes Katsuki Bakugou especially. I can’t honestly praise this fic enough. Please read.

Falling by @soulestring

I think… nearly every person who likes BakuDeku/KatsuDeku knows about this story. This is, in my opinion, the BakuDeku fics of all BakuDeku fics, especially for first-time readers curious about the ship. It’s set in the canon universe and closely (with creative liberties taken of course) follows the main storyline of the manga/anime with a very intriguing look into the dynamic and “unrequited love” aspect of the Katsuki/Izuku relationship.

Incandescent Snow by Chicory

Okay, so, where do I even start with this? I love, and I mean, love, the concept behind this. This AU is so refreshing and unique and I love how in-character and tragic and angsty this story is, with outstanding imagery and themes that definitely border on the line of ambiguity and social construct. I love the questions raised in this story about relationships, family, and brotherhood. I personally consider it to be phenomenal and criminally underrated. Please read this.

For Want of Izuku’s Toe Joint by Talavin

This story is… for one, the amount of effort taken into capturing the elements of the original story and broadening the horizons within them in each chapter is worth mentioning on its own. I love the relationship between Izuku and Katsuki and their dynamic with the rest of their class, on top of how well the canon events are handled with a few twists thrown in there. Also, Izuku’s characterized very, very well in this, and I love that he stands equally with Katsuki. That’s honestly quite a rarity to find in fanfiction, and it’s something to behold.

How to Mend a Broken Soul by youwishyouwerethiscool

This is my favorite interpretation of the Soulmate AU that I’ve seen in the BNHA archive so far, especially with BakuDeku. I’m sure there are many exceptional ones under other ships, but… this is my list. Heh. Anyway, this is a wonderful fic with a great eye for characterization and detail, and it’s mostly from Katsuki’s perspective, which is great. I always love seeing different interpretations of his character and how he would handle being Izuku’s soulmate. This fic is wonderful.

Still, read Fascinating and Manage Me, and then go read THIS because it’s wonderful and action-packed and angsty and dramatic. All the good things.

There are a lot of amazing KatsuDeku fics out there, but this one is by far my favorite. At least in the sense of AUs. And I’m in love with assassin AUs, so bonus. It’s beautifully written; they write action super well and their personalities shine so strongly in this fic and I LOVE THE SLOW BURN. IT’S THE SLOWEST BURN EVER and I have really high hopes for this fic. The plot is genius as well and the story so far is extremely promising. I’ve also read their “On The Run” fic, yet in my opinion “Hunting the Past” is a whole caliber above it and I enjoyed every moment of it. Anyways, enough of my rambling. THAT FIC IS GOD TIER.

He was holding up a sweater, clearly in the middle of putting it on a hanger when Izuku had barged in. Izuku had been preparing for a lot of possibilities behind the door, but this was not on his list.

Blond, spiky hair, and eyes like fire with a temperament to match. Katsuki Bakugou, undoubtedly.

Katsuki placed his hands on his knees and bent forward, narrowing his eyes at the other man. Izuku kept on staring at him without a care in the world and if Katsuki’s mother wasn’t in the room staring him down and mentally daring him to say something rude to his new client he’d probably have already yelled at the other by now.

Izuku took the chance to walk over to Katsuki, stopping just in front of him and holding his hand out. He grinned from ear to ear and held his other hand behind his back, waiting for Katsuki to grab his hand in a more peaceful manner this time.

“I think I’m really going to enjoy working with you, Katsuki. I hope we can get along really well.”
