ranking the tdi challenges best to worst:
paintball deer hunter: I ACTUALLY LOVE THIS CHALLENGE SO MUCH like wouldn't that be so fun??? sorry but I LOVE this challenge
horror challenge: I think this one is universally loved like. what isn't fun about a little horror? it's also PERFECT for me because I LOVE the concept of horror but HATE actual gore. like the stick-together, classic tropes, ect. but I hate gore. so this was so fun for me!
cooking: I do really like cooking myself so this sounds so fun. team bonding and all that really.
tri-armed-triathlon: this is like one of the best episodes ever and the challenge is so cool. yeah.
trust challenge: also really fun I love mini-challenges like this. makes for fun dynamics as well.
cliff diving: it was definitely fun and a great intro to the show. the jumps characterized everyone, and the first two episodes are def some of my favorite.
boney island canoe thing: I really liked this one there was a lot of team bonding and just a fun challenge honestly.
phobia factor: facing your greatest fears? the challenge of all time.
camping in the woods: genuinely just sounds like fun. the scary stories were cool too. fun episode and challenge.
x-treme challenges: I love the mini-challenges they're so fun. this one isn't my favorite bc I think only the skiing one was actually fun the other two were meh.
talent show: obviously it's basic but it's a classic. you can't go wrong with a talent show. plus, you get to see what certain characters are good at and that's really fun.
awake-a-thon: had some of my favorite moments of the whole show, and also a great challenge for characterization. also just a fun challenge idea.
wheel of dares: def fun espec for final 3 like. yeah.
hide & seek: a classic game. basic but fun.
finale: it was good but I feel like the finales of every season were just. underwhelming. except for world tour.
animal hunt: I don't care about it that much.
chef's whole thing: idk it was good ig but like. idrc. the episode was really good but the challenge was meh.
dodgeball: really basic I don't really care about it.
the weird episode with the flood and the coconut: idk I feel like I forgot everything about it. like it wasn't the best wasn't the worst.
the one where duncan got eliminated: whatever I'm out of here.
scavenger hunt: also just okay idrc.
brunch: I get it but ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew
10 second wheel of fortune: this one was actually so boring. only mini challenge episode that bores me like what.
bike challenge: OMG I saw this episode and was like "bike challenge! sounds so fun!" it was not fun. It was so poorly written. genuinely sucks. WHY WERE THE RULES LIKE THAT like there were so many other ways to make the challenge actually work I could go on for days. why did they care about passing the finish on each others' bikes? why does immunity matter when the last person is auto-eliminated? like OH MY GOD
.

Last week in France
Monday, we had our last lecture in the morning before taking a visit to an Airbus facility in the afternoon. We got a quick presentation on Airbus and its work with satellites before we got to stand on a little observation deck and watch people at work in the clean room. It was very, very cool! I knew satellites were big, but knowing that doesn’t even compare to seeing the full size. I sadly don’t have any pictures of the clean room because they were working on a government satellite. After the visit, we went back to the school to take our exam. It was pretty stressful because we were told it would be open book, and it wasn’t. Somehow, we all passed, and they adjusted our grades so that we all passed in Paris as well, so we all successfully completed the course!
Tuesday was the last day with required attendance, so it was bittersweet - most people were leaving the next day. We did a “cultural rally” downtown, which was really just a scavenger hunt in teams in the morning. In the afternoon, we had our closing ceremony, so we all got little completion certificates and took pictures. I was a little teary-eyed, I won’t lie. To say one last goodbye, we all got dinner together and went to a boardgame bar by the hotel. We played Avalon and Catan mostly, and it was a lot of fun. However, Australian Sam was hopping on a train out that night, so it was tough saying goodbye.

Game night and a fake birthday party we hosted for Kaitlyn, our program lead.
Wednesday morning, us UMich kids had to go listen to some PhD students talk, so everyone came down and ate an early breakfast with us. It was super emotional and very difficult to leave. It’s hard knowing how much fun I had with everyone and how good of friends they all are and that it could be years before I see most of them again, if ever. We all promised to do our best to keep in touch and plan a reunion eventually. I was so upset I didn’t listen to most of the presentations, sorry PhD students. I got too many “I’m on the train!” and “We’re at the airport!” Messages to focus. We luckily got home early enough to wish Tom, a friend from Southampton goodbye. My friend Gina, who goes to UW, thankfully (sorry Gina) got stuck in Toulouse for an extra day, so I hung out with her and Ethan all day after we got back. We got snacks and watched a few movies and chatted and ate pizza. It was a lot of fun and a good send off.
Thursday, we went to an observatory, but, again, it was super hard to make myself leave because Gina was taking the train out of Toulouse while we were gone. She was definitely my best friend on this trip, and we’re already making plans to try to see each other again. The observatory was very cool, so I am glad that I went, I just wish it was something the whole group got to do together. We did see some wild llamas while eating lunch. They just emerged from the fog, it was crazy. Then we went up to around 9700 feet in elevation and had an incredible view of the mountains. I also got very sunburned.

Friday, at 1am, Ethan and I planned a trip to the Pyrenees to visit a castle and go hiking. I accidentally slept through saying goodbye to the guys that were leaving that day :( but I did manage to wake up in time for the trip. The trains were having some crazy deal because it was 2 hours direct travel there and the same back for TWO EURO roundtrip. Once we got there, we bought extra water (probably had about 5.5L on us altogether) and headed to the château. We spent around 3 hours there. It was huge with so many cool areas, and most of it was available to walk through! Plus the tickets were 3.50 each. From the top of the château, we saw a really cool church in the distance and decided to stop there after lunch. It was huge! It was technically two basilicas and a crypt, and it was so beautiful. There were lots of glittering mosaic works, stained glass windows, and huge stone arches. It was actually cooler than the Sacre-Coeur, I think. From there, we went on a hike that was supposedly an hour and a half and well marked. We were really taking our time because we had four hours to burn, stopping for lots of pictures. The path started poorly marked, then was very well marked, then was HORRIBLY marked. We couldn’t find the path forward and only had a little over an hour and a half to get to the train station that was down the mountain and across town, so we sprinted back the way we came (momentarily stopped by cows), and did our best to run through town, though it was a lot of uphill. Also, both of our phones died, so we had to guess our way back to the station until we hit some signs. We made it, sweaty and dirty and out of breath, with 5 minutes to spare. It was so fun and so stressful and definitely makes for a great story. I slept around 10 hours that night.

The insane hike. The city in the distance was taken just before running down the mountain there. Cows (taken on my little camera because my phone died).
Saturday, we were too worn out to do anything, so we just got lunch, did some brief shopping, and watched movies. We ate dinner at our favorite restaurant in Toulouse, where a lot of us often ate together (banh mi! It was so, so good, I’d never had it before). It was honestly a little sad. At around 11:15 I said goodbye and left for the bus station. My flight was out of Paris, and the trains were all sold out, so I had to take an overnight FlixBus. I slept most of it and headed straight to the airport after I woke up. I’m glad I did because RER B was very late (what I took from the city to the airport), and check-in took forever. I’m actually writing this last blog from the airport :(

Our last dinner in France.
Overall, I’m so glad that I went on this trip. I know that I learned a lot about aerospace, which was the main goal, but more importantly, I made some lifelong friends that I will miss for every minute that we’re apart. That made saying goodbye so hard. I got to experience a lot of French culture by traveling around the country, working on my language skills and mannerisms, and helped and got helped by the people in my program. I couldn’t recommend doing a program like this enough, and I am forever grateful that I got to be a part of this experience.

What do you think about AOT characters and valentines day? Like what would they do for you
fun fact: i dont really like valentines day :/ lmfao i think its so overhyped and its just another capitalism driven day where youre forced to buy chocolates and flowers for your s/o when you should be doing that normally 🤨 on a lighter note i guess it is a nice excuse to spoil ur s/o and make them feel special :) so here are some thoughts on what they would do for you
eren is dicking you down all day LMFAOOO and he’s so annoying about it too. you wake up and he does that stupid little thing where he’s like “hmmmmm is today a special day??? any particular reason i love you extra today???” please hes so irritating. probably gets you a promise ring or something and when ur like aw baby this is so nice!!!! he’s like “...nice enough to give me head? 😀” LOL
armin is the CUTEST. wakes you up with breakfast in bed w all of your favorites. has a whole itinerary planned with museum visits and coffee stops and walks through the park. he probably gives you a bunch of little gifts throughout the day but definitely makes you something handmade  <3 his card leaves you ugly sobbing and he’s kinda scared
mikasa stays in with you all day. like refuses to leave your side. you guys cuddle all morning and watch ur favorite movies and order in takeout. i think she just loves spending quality time with her s/o and uses this day as an excuse to be stuck to your hip. gets you the most THOUGHTFUL GIFT. it could be something you were looking at in passing or something you mentioned you needed once and she gets you the best most expensive full out version of it :(
jean is a simple man, so he buys you your favorite flowers and chocolate/candy and shows up at your door like he’s in a romcom. in a suit and all. ur probably like “baby i thought we agreed not to do anything crazy” and he’s like oh you think this is crazy???? you made me tone it down :/ he just loves to spoil his s/o so this is kinda just another regular day for him. buys you an anklet with a J on it bc he’s a freak
connie is so proud of himself. king makes a scavenger hunt!!!!! :) :) he comes up with all of these cute little personalized clues that send you all around town like where you had your first date, your guys’ favorite fast food place, the park that he slipped on ice at and ate complete shit in front of you :) its so fun and exciting and it ends with u meeting him at a cute little ice rink for iceskating and drinking hot chocolate :) he’s sweet when he tries
sasha has a vacation booked in advance for you guys :((((( she makes sure you take a few days off of work and rents out a little cabin by the lake or by a cute beach town where you guys can try all of these new restaurants and play boardwalk arcade games :(((( she’s really nervous for absolutely no reason :(((( im in love with her :(((
levi makes you a homemade meal because he’s a fuckin snob. he’s all why would i take you out somewhere just for it to be crowded with couples and eat shitty food when i could do it myself and guarantee you like it??? probably sets the table and puts a candle in the middle like he sees in the movies lmfao. he loves you a lot and doesn’t say it often, so he uses this day as an excuse to be a little more open with his love
reiner makes a reservation at an extremely expensive and boujee restaurant bc he wants to impress you and “treat his baby to the finest dining around!” gets so incredibly disappointed when he realizes that they lost his reservation. tries to politely reassure the hostess that he’s sure he called ahead!!!! check under his last name maybe??? once you convince him it’s fine really it’s no big deal babe you guys get fast food or something and eat it on the hood of his car in a parking lot LMFAO it’s the thought that counts babes <3
porco makes you hair and nail appointments and forces you to go to them with his credit card LMFAO you offer to pay and he gets all serious like. dont ever venmo me money ever again😐 probably takes you out whenever you wanna go and doesn’t care how long you might have to wait. makes a joke about proposing that you don’t find funny 😒
thank you for requesting this! p.s. if you dont have a valentine and ur reading this, ur my valentine now. i dont make the rules. dinner is on me tonight baby what do u want

Part Seven under the cut:
My dearest wife Dina who is my wife and whom I love dearly,
Hey, babe. Hope this letter finds you well. They always do these days I guess, cause I put them there.
What’s up? The sky! I'm excited we’re going out to the cabin for two weeks for our Anniversary! Twenty years is a long time to put up with you, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. (We both know it’s the other way round, let me have this. Kay, babe?)
If you’re reading this letter, then you have completed my little scavenger hunt and are now packed and ready to go, we head out tomorrow. Unless you have something better you could be doing?
JJ promised he will watch Laika and Toony. The cats practically jumped into his arms. Starting to think they like him more than me, the person who feeds and loves them and calmly deals with their surprise murder gifts on our floor, hidden in the laundry basket, on the kitchen island, in our bed and occasionally, directly on my face at four am.
I still can't believe that Eugene had a book of astronomical events and celestial objects tucked away for posterity that we get to see this one in our lifetime. Let alone during our anniversary. I remember Joel saying he wanted to live long enough to see this sucker cross the sky cause he was way to young to witness and remember it last time it passed over our collective heads. I know this is a once in my life time experience, thank you for indulging me. For letting it be a once in our life time experience.
I’m excited I get to share this with you. I’m happy I’m alive at the same time as you to see it.
Twenty years around the sun with my favorite person. It's so strange how humans keep marking the passage of time. I guess how else would we know we've made such an achievement.
Twenty years has felt like no time at all and forever at the same time with you. You make my heart race and palms sweat all the same. You make me feel as if I’m nineteen all over again and it’s just you and me in the middle of the dance floor, and I don’t want to fuck up our friendship.
Then you kissed me. Suddenly, I’m panicking because the girl I like kissed me. I never thought in my wildest dreams (trust me they were wild) that she would ever want to kiss me, (let alone spend the rest of her life with me). I still can’t stop smiling because of you. I’m smiling right now as I write this, ask JJ, he’s making fun of me for it as I write. Should I tease him with the time we caught him making out in the kitchen with June and how love struck and gross he was? I’m gonna do it.
(He flipped me off. Definitely our son.)
I’m not making up for the things I’ve done anymore. I’m making things happen with you. It feels like I’m living. I am allowing myself to feel blessed to have you.
It's still weird for me to say. You're the closest I'll ever get to believing there’s something out there. If there’s more to this life than what we’ve experienced I hope my soul finds yours. If it doesn’t we’re made of stardust, the universe is us and when we go, we return home. I’ll go home to you.
Always. I found my way back to you twenty-three years ago. I’ll find my way back if it takes a millennia or several million.
You have been my guiding star all these years. Whenever I feel lost I look to you. You’re still the prettiest star in the universe. Twenty years and I’m still finding new constellations with you.
Thank you for giving me a second chance, for raising our son to be a kind compassionate man, like his father, for teaching me that if I have a bad day there is a chance to make tomorrow better.
Thank you for helping me remember how to laugh, for helping me discover new songs in my heart. For having my back when we're paired together, in life and on patrol. There is no one else I want beside me when the roads get tough.
Thank you for keeping me safe from myself when I can’t. Staying up with me after a bad dream long enough to make breakfast with me so I don’t have to feel guilty. Helping me come back to myself when the nightmares were too much to handle.
Thank you for never letting me be alone again.
Lyrics to your favorite Ellie original, since last year you got way too high and kept making up lyrics. Now you have no excuse not to sing this ramblin’ tune with me:
as we grow older
if our love will start to smolder
oh will you keep this beacon lit with me
cause you're my north star against the night
my silver dawn come morning light
next to you is where i want to be
where you go oh i will follow
through happiness and sorrow
oh won't you chart this course with me
cause you're my compass when i'm lost
the rose that points me home at any cost
next to you is where i'm meant to be
when your lost I will find you
when you’re without hope I’ll stand beside you
cause I was built for you and you for me
love is work but loving you comes easily
oh darlin’ don’t you see
Here’s to twenty more.
May we both make it to seventy-three.
Yours,
then, now, forever,
Ellie, who is you wife and the anniversary planning fucking master.
P.S. If you haven’t packed light you might want to look up. I got you a gift.

Demon (Boku No Hero) - Chapter 12
Tumblr media
Warning: Swearing
”Huh? Uraraka?” Katsuki says confused. “Don’t tell me....you don’t even know your classmate?!” I ask him shocked. “Oh, she is?” He asks confused while I still look shock. “Yes!” I answer him and I see Ochaco freeze behind him. “Are you Aka?” I hear and Katsuki and I look behind me seeing the Hatsume girl. “Yes.” I answer her serious. “Oh good! Actually...” She says excited. “I wouldn't be excited if I was you, I’m going to beat you through the ground.” I say glaring at her and I can see all her excitement leaving her eyes, and then she leaves smiling again like I didn’t threat her. “Weird girl.” I say. “Just like you.” Katsuki jokes. “Shut up time bomb!” I say. Then I look back to the board and I could see recreation write in it. “All right! Let’s leave the tournament aside for a momentary interlude!” I hear Present Mic and I look confused at Katsuki who also looks back confused, firework going on the background. “Let’s have fun with the recreation! First is the scavenger hunt!” Present Mic continues. “I’m really not in the mood for kids games....” I say looking at my classmates playing and laughing, so I went to the waiting room we were at the beginning and I see a very scared looking broccoli. “Izu-kun?” I ask him poking his shoulder scared that he was broken. “I’m dead....” He says and I laugh hugging him. “Probably.” I say teasing him. “AKA-CHAN!” He cries making me laugh more. “You’re going against the purple hair dude right?” I ask him now serious and he nods. “I think he has some mental Quirk, something about compelling people. Be careful.” I say to him. “I will. Thanks Aka-chan.” He says smiling at me still nervous, and I leave him with Ojiro who was explaining to him what the purple dude did to him. “Katsuki? What are doing?” I came back to the stadium only to see Katsuki with his face against the wall. “Nothing.” He answers and we look at each other. “And you say I’m the weird one.” I say serious. “SHUT UP!” He screams.
The time for the battles came fast, and you could feel everyone was nervous and serious. “Hey guys, are you ready?!” Present Mic screams and everyone at the stadium screams. “A lot’s happened, but it’s now come to this! A serious battle!” Present Mic continues. “You can do this Akuma. You can win this. You can only depend on yourself!” I think determined. I walk with my classmates and thankfully the girls and I are back to our training uniforms and I return Katsuki jacket blushing. “It smells like her.” Katsuki thinks smiling when he wears his jacket again. “Match number one! From the hero course, it’s Izuku Midoriya! Versus...From general studies, it’s Hitoshi Shinso!” Present Mic screams and I look at them through the screen. “Good luck Izu-kun!” I think. “Stupid Deku is going to lose.” Katsuki says sitting next to me. “SHUT UP!” I say punching his head. “YOUR STUPID DEMON! STOP!” He screams while I keep punching him. “Did he froze? Shit! I fucking warn him!” I think nervous watching the match. “GET OUT OF IT DAMMIT!” I scream getting up my seat only for Katsuki to pull be back down. “Calm down Akuma.” He says calmly. “His fucking being brainwashed!” I say nervous. “So the purple dude has a brainwashing Quirk?” Katsuki asks me. “Ya, I think so.” I answer him.
I was almost biting my nails off watching Izuku battle but at the end I sigh in relief. “Shinso is out of bounds! Midoriya advances to round two!” I heard Midnight declaring Izuku as the winner. “Yes!” I celebrate and Ochaco joins me sighting in relief. “In the finals, the first person to advance to the second round is Izuku Midoriya from Class A!” Present Mic screams. “I was so nervous.” I hear Ochaco say. “Me too, me too.” I think now relaxing then I hear Katsuki insulting Kaminari then a break comes, and I get up. “Where are you going?” Katsuki asks me. “I’m going to buy some chocolate from the vending machine.” I told him and he gets up. “I’m going with you.” He says and we both leave together. Katsuki and I were silently walking in the corridor me with my chocolate on my mouth until we see Shoto leaving his Dad, Endeavor behind. “Came here to annoy your son again, Endeavor.” I say darkly, getting my chocolate out of my mouth and glaring at the flame men. “Who knew U.A. would accept someone like you, Akuma.” He says also glaring at me. “Who knew the world would accept a hero who is a shit Dad.” I attack back. “Go back to the hole you came from and leave Shoto alone.” I say, Katsuki and I are now passing by him and I could feel Katsuki eyes on me. “At least Shoto knows who his biological father is.” Endeavor says, and I could feel him smirk while I froze in the corridor, eyes big in shock. “Akuma?” Katsuki whispers my name confused. “I prefer not to know my father and have you as one.” I say looking down and a shadow on my face I start walking again, away from an angry Endeavor and thankfully Katsuki didn’t ask me anything, and we went back to the others seeing Izuku also arriving, and I jump on his back hugging him. “Congratulations Izu-kun!” I say to him happy again. “Thanks Aka-chan!” He says smiling. “Are you sitting with us?” He says gesturing to Ochaco and Lida who were waiting. “Let’s go demon. Get out of the way, Deku.” Katsuki says taking the back of my uniform jacket and taking me with him. “Guess not, sorry Izu-kun.” I say and Izuku only smile nervous at us and Katsuki sits us fair away from Izuku. “Jealous pomeranian.” I tease him. “Shut up.” He says angry. “Next battle is...from the hero course, it’s Hanta Sero versus also from the hero course, it’s Shoto Todoroki!” Present Mic informs the second battle and I see Katsuki watching them very serious. “Why does he have to look so hot?” I think. “Shoto is going to win this in seconds.” I say and just I say that, a huge ice wall was covering half of the stadium. “Sero is immobilized! Todoroki advances to the second round!” Midnight says announcing the second winner. “Told ya.” I say seeing everyone shocked face even Katsuki. After Shoto battle came Kaminari versus Shiozaki wish Shiozaki wins everyone was watching the battle but got distracted and annoyed by Izuku mumble while he writes on his little book. “Izu-kun...”I tried calling him after seeing Katsuki pissed off face. “Izuku stop before Katsuki actually kills you right now!” I whisper only for Katsuki to glare at me then Ochaco actually makes him stop. “God bless this woman.” I think sighting in relief seeing Katsuki face back to normal then someone came telling me it was time for my battle, so I get up. “You better win demon.” Katsuki says smirking. “You know I will.” I smirk back. “Good luck Aka-chan.” Izuku says when I pass by him with Ochaco beside him with her thumbs up. “Thanks.” I say and leave.
“You can do this, you can do this. You won’t lose control.” I whisper to myself nervous. “Hey!” I hear a familiar face and I see Dad in his skinny form. “Dad.” I say smiling at him. “Are you nervous?” He asks me. “A little.” I answer him honestly. “You’re afraid something may happen?” He asks me, both of us remembering the U.S.J. incident. “Yes.” I answer him honestly. “That day in the infirmary room, you told me you wanted to embrace that side and used for good. Then do it. This is your chance. I believe in you!” Dad encourages me, smiling big making me feel better. “Thank you Dad!” I say smiling, tears on my eyes when Dad hugs me tight. “I have to go, good luck my daughter.” He says leaving the hug and I walk to the battle centre emotionless and observe my opponent Mei Hatsume. “Now, it’s time for the fourth match!” Present Mic says. “She’s the demon of U.A.! One of the strongest from the class A! From the hero course, it’s Akuma Aka!” Present Mic presents me. “Really? Demon of U.A.?” I think nervous. “Versus...Fully-equiped with support items! From the support course, it’s Mei Hatsume!” Present Mic says, and I see her smiling at me. “She’s against the support course, huh?” Jiro says to her classmates. “I wonder what kind of fight it’ll be?” Tsu says and surprisingly Katsuki responds. ”Akuma is going to beat her fast.” He says serious looking at the red and black hair girl. “Kaachan...” Izuku whispers. Then my battle started, I waited for her to attack first for my surprise she starts talking to a mic. “Isn’t this wonderful, Aka-chan?” She asks excited. “What?” I think confused then she starts presenting her gadgets like I wasn’t even here, and I start getting angry. “Is...Is she selling her stuff instead of fighting with me?“ I think a dark aura surround me. “Aka is getting fed up.” Aizawa-sensei says knowing his student and Present Mic agrees seeing her reaction. “Aka-chan is getting angry.” Izuku says seeing a dark aura coming out of his friend. “Serves her right.” Katsuki says towards the pink girl. “ENOUGH!” I yell and Mei stops selling her gadgets and the stadium goes silence. “I’M NOT HERE TO FUCKING LISTENING TO YOU SELLING YOUR STUFF!” I yell. “If you don’t want to battle then I’m going to finish it right now.” I say glaring at the pink hair girl who looks at me shocked. “What?” She asks, then my red mist surrounds me and I sent her a hex bolt, but she uses her boots to fly away. “She missed!” Izuku says shocked. “Look closer dumber.” Katsuki says and everyone leans closed. “Got you.” I say teleporting myself behind her exactly like I predicted and kick her back hard making her hit the ground out of bounds, making some of her gadgets broke. “Next time, don’t explain your gadgets to the enemy.” I say. “No! My gadgets!” The girl says sad. “H-Hatsume is out of bounds. Aka advances to the second round!” Midnight says and I leave the battle centre. “Woah!” My classmates say and all the stadium goes nuts. “She really got you angry...”All Might thinks. “I like this kid! Can’t wait for your next fight kid.” A hero laughs watching the girl. “That’s what you get when you get the demon angry!” Present Mic screams. “Shut up.” I hear Aizawa-sensei saying towards Mic. “Sorry, sorry!” He says.
I got back to my seat next to Katsuki and my classmates congratulations me on my winning. “Thanks guys!” I smile to them but then sigh in disappointment. “What?” Katsuki asks me. “That was hardly a fight.... so disappointed!” I complain but I see Katsuki smile at me. “Stupid. She was getting on my nervous.” He says making me laugh. “I wish you battle her instead, it would be so funny!” I say imagining everything. “Tch.” Katsuki says, but I could still see him smiling, and then we watch the next battles until Katsuki battle came. “Do your best, Katsuki!” I say smiling at him who smirks. “Just watch me demon.” He says and walks out then he and Ochaco was face to face. “Poor you Ochaco, but go girl!” I think even knowing that she won’t win, I know she won’t give up easily. “The eighth and last match of the first round! From the hero course, it’s Katsuki Bakugo versus from the hero course, it’s Ochaco Uraraka!” Present Mic says. “Why is he making that face?” I ask out loud laughing seeing Katsuki making a weird face while Izuku looks at me nervous then they start the battle. “This is going to be a really tough battle. Please don’t kill her Katsuki!” I think.

Destiel December Challenge 2020
Day 8: Blizzard
This is a continuation of days 2-7, the master list is pinned to my profile.
Check it out on AO3 as well!
***
Charlie was really enjoying herself. The night may have started off as a way of helping her brothers out, but this Christmas event was actually super amazing. She had managed to snag a hand-knit elf hat while Sam asked about custom made dolls of all things. Charlie got Sam a headband with reindeer antlers and insisted that he wear them. She even convinced him to take a selfie with her, although he voiced his concerns about her using the picture for blackmail purposes.
“Why are you looking for dolls, Sam? What does that have to do with talking to Dean?” Sam smiled mysteriously and wiggled his eyebrows at her.
“You’ll have to wait and see. You’re so impatient. What’s with the picture taking by the way?”
“I just thought it’d be nice. I got some sneaky ones of Dean being all adorable with Cas.” Sam laughed.
“So, you are trying for blackmail, clever.” Charlie rolled her eyes. “Actually, can I see the pictures?”
“Sure.” Charlie handed her phone over to Sam. He took a few moments to look through them with a grin growing across his face.
“Do you mind if I send some of these to myself?”
“Go ahead.” Sam thanked her and spent a few moments emailing himself some of the photos.
“If you get anymore tonight, can you send them as well? Dean’s working on a gift for Cas, and I think I can add on to it a bit.” Charlie nodded her agreement.
“No prob. What are you up to, a photo album or something?” Sam shrugged.
“Not really, I’m going to frame some of them. I’m not sure I have enough for an album, we don’t stop and take pictures all that often,” Sam gave Charlie half of a smile and then spotted something in the distance. “Hey, I think that’s the booth I’m looking for.”
Charlie wandered around the custom doll booth for a bit while Sam got into a deep discussion with the artist running the place. It took long enough that she’d started playing on her phone by the time Sam walked back over.
“Well, that cost way more than I was originally intending to spend on Dean, and she won’t have it ready until tomorrow night, but I think it’ll be worth it.” Sam honestly looks excited just for himself, so Charlie just punches his arm and grins.
“You better find somewhere for everyone to spend the night then. Check out the forecast.” Sam’s eyes widen in mild surprise as he sees the weather app on Charlie’s screen.
“Wow, yeah, I don’t think we want to be driving in that. Especially since the Impala isn’t exactly the best car for snow. An actual blizzard, huh?”
“Yeah, it may still miss this area but we might as well see where we can snag a few rooms. There’s some sort of 1800s B&B within walking distance. After that we can go meet Santa Claus!” Charlie clapped her hands with glee and started bounding off to wherever this inn was supposed to be as Sam followed her with a bemused expression.

“Dean. There is one over here.” Dean walked over to Cas while dodging some of the crystals hanging from the ceiling in the New Age-y shop one of the kids they’d passed had tipped them off about. Cas had stopped trying to restrain his smile, he was enjoying how much fun Dean seemed to be having playing this silly game.
“Awesome! You’re pretty good at this angel spotting thing.” Dean smirked and winked at the actual angel in the store.
“Yes,” Cas said dryly. “It does seem to be some sort of innate skill on my part.” Dean chuckled and makes sure Castiel records the newest scavenger hunt angel on his list.
“We only have one more on the list. Where haven’t we gone yet?” Castiel lifts an eyebrow as Dean pours over the small map of the historic city he’d found in the event booklet.
“We haven’t gone to get coffee yet. I believe someone mentioned coffee to me before starting this endeavor but we’ve been walking around for an hour, and I still have yet to see any.” Dean rolled his eyes.
“Wow, Cas. I will say the one human trait that’s given you very little problems is sarcasm.” Cas just continued to look at Dean expectantly. “Alright, alright, lets go get you coffee, angel.”
Dean grabbed Cas’ hand to lead him out of the store through the maze of shimmering crystals, painted tarot cards, and velvet draped tables. Cas’ chest felt tight with hope as he allowed himself to be pulled up the stairs towards the door. While, yes, Cas was an angel, that’s not what the word had sounded like when Dean had just said it. Cas felt another wave of grace pulse through his still fragile wings. He kept his grip on Dean’s hand as if it were the only thing keeping him from drowning.
Once they got outside Dean started walking uphill towards the coffee shop he’d seen on the map. Castiel stayed quiet while following, as he didn’t want to draw Dean’s attention to the way that they were still holding hands.
Eventually though, they reached their destination and Dean dropped Castiel’s hand to hold open the door to the small shop with local artwork decorating the walls. Cas immediately missed the feeling of Dean’s hand but pretended to be absorbed in reading the menu board to compose himself before looking back over at his best friend.
“Do you see anything you want, Cas?” For one insane moment Cas almost said - yes, you. Clearing his throat to cover up his near miss Cas stumbled over his words.
“Uh, just something warm? Would you pick? There are too many choices.” Dean’s eyes ran across the menu board for a few minutes.
“You said you could kind of taste the peppermint bark we made, right? The have peppermint flavor on the specials board, if you want.” Cas nodded and let Dean order coffee for Castiel and hot chocolate for himself. While Dean was ordering Cas looked around at some of the artwork hanging on the walls, keeping an eye out for their last scavenger hunt angel. He was contemplating a painting that seemed to be an abstract version of a human eye when Dean came up behind him holding two mismatched mugs.
“Let’s go upstairs, Cas. It’s kinda crowded down here and the barista told me they have an outdoor area up there.” Cas followed Dean up the stairs of the historic building. The upstairs did seem to be more peaceful. Dean walked over to doors leading outside and Cas reached in front of Dean to grab the door since he was still carrying their drinks.
“This is beautiful,” stated Cas. The angel stood still for a moment, taking in the narrow wooden balcony that wrapped into a steep drop off of stone that served as a wall to the store but hadn’t been altered from the outside. Dean noticed what Castiel was looking at and led them back to a table right by the natural rock wall. They had an excellent view of the main street and all of the lights from their vantage point.
“I have to admit, this is a pretty cool place.” Cas agreed with Dean and pulled his drink towards him, only then noticing that the notably handmade mug was covered in bumps that were painted to look like bees. He glanced up at Dean only to find him watching Cas in anticipation. A smile slowly spread across the angel’s face.
“Bees? You asked them for this mug, didn’t you?” Dean chuckled.
“Yeah. If I recall you were very enthusiastic about bees a few years ago.” If Castiel could get any redder out in the biting cold he would have.
“I do like bees, yes.” Castiel attempted to maintain a solemn expression but this was ruined when he looked down at the mug again, feeling new feathers forming as his grace pulsed behind him once again. Dean reached across and touched Cas’ arm for just a moment.
“Hey Cas, are you okay?” When Cas looked back up into Dean’s face, he knew his eyes had teared up a bit, but he smiled fondly at Dean nonetheless.
“I’m wonderful Dean. I just – it was very kind of you. To think of me like that, I mean.” Castiel crinkled his nose to try and prevent himself from actually crying. Dean’s face was hard to read just then, some sort of mixture of guilt and perhaps understanding.
“I, um, I just thought it’d make you smile man.” Dean rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly and Cas decided it was time to change the subject.
They began a heated discussion of where they should look next for the last angel. While they were debating the merits of looking in the small train museum it started to snow and Cas took a few seconds to enjoy the sight of the flakes falling on the beautiful street below. They made there way back inside thinking that they may just have to skip to meeting Charlie and Sam as the restaurant was at the opposite end of the main road and the snow was picking up fast. Dean grabbed Castiel’s mug to return them to the front and the angel pulled the blue and white knit hat he’d picked up over his head. He’d made Dean get one as well, in green and red, something he’d probably be less resistant too now that it was snowing. Castiel smiled at the memory of Dean’s protests over the pompom on top of the hat.
“The guy up front said this snow may turn into a blizzard late tonight, so we should definitely regroup with the others.” Castiel silently held the knit hat up to Dean and rolling his eyes he tilted his head forward a bit so Cas could easily pull it on. Cas opened the door and was quietly happy as Dean took his hand again to lead him through the small crowd of shoppers.

Forging a Heart (Ivar the Boneless) 3- The sons of Ragnar
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairings: Ivar x Artemis (OFC)
Word Count: 2220
Warnings: None so far!
2- Taken
...
The notorious Kattegat that Helga spoke so fondly of was in turmoil. Their queen was over thrown and killed, her murderer proclaiming that she was their rightful queen. These people were so hotheaded, that even their women fought each other for power.
The captives on the commanding ship were rounded up by Hvitserk, locking them in with the other captives in what seemed like a farm house. Some of the other captured women began to cry in fear, dry kohl streaking their faces. Artemis was tired of crying, but her eyes burned with the need to release tears.
Her watery eyes stared defiantly at Hvitserk, who only returned her glare with a smile, baring all teeth like a wolf on the hunt. To him, she appeared as a mouse caught in a trap.
"Oh little fighter," He begins, "We admire such will, but not in a slave," His smile didn't falter. He turned his back on all of them, locking them into their makeshift prison.
...
"It has come to our attention that Helga has taken a liking to you,"
Bjorn had a voice that could only be described as infuriating, the tones sounding almost childlike despite his large outward appearance. He pulled her roughly towards a moderately sized cabin, far better in construction than the others.
She stumbled along with his quick pace, blinking the sleep from her eyes. It was a quiet morning, and it was her first time scanning the town since their arrival. The people stared at her before going about their business. She began to wonder how long they were kept locked away in the farm house.
"If it were up to me you would have been the perfect gift for her. She has been a friend of the family for many years," He continued nonchalantly, as if they were only discussing the weather and not her enslavement, "But there are other plans for you."
Bjorn stops suddenly, turning round to face her. She gulps, watching how his eyes scan over her like a fine mare for sale.
"I wonder if mother is right?" Artemis cocks her head at his words, not fully understanding. Bjorn just shrugs, grabbing her by the cloak and pulling her along again.
"You will be given to my youngest brother as a gift."
Her eyes widened, drowsiness disappearing completely from her body as she fought against Bjorn's grip, tangling herself in the cloak. She screeches, digging her bare feet into the earth to halt the tall man's movements, but it was no use. She tripped over her dirty feet, almost meeting with the muddy ground before Bjorn grabbed her cloak by the neck, steadying her.
"Try not to make a bad impression, Ivar can be quite fickle." Bjorn chuckles, pushing open the wooden door of the cabin and pushing her inside. She stumbled on her weak legs, turning to look back at Bjorn. He was amused.
"Bjorn, for me? You shouldn't have!" Hvitserk cheers, jumping up from a stool beside the door. His long hair was now much neater, braided away from his face and exposing his features clearer then before. He was smiling like a fool, and Artemis didn't like it.
"How's the little fighter doing?" Hvitserk pulls her closer, holding her in place by the shoulders when she threatened to fall over.
"Brothers! Come take a look!"
Looking past him, she noticed how richly lit the area was, with furs covering every inch of the walls. A small fire was blazing in the middle, the sudden heat causing her to shiver. The smell of roasted meat wafted to her nostrils, and she only realized then how starved she was.
Two men appear from a chamber deeper inside the cabin. They were of similar build and height, with the same blonde tresses atop their head.
"This is the Mediterranean girl found in the monestary," Hvitserk pushed her towards them, making her an uncomfortable object of attention. She stood there awkwardly, not wanting to look them in the eyes.
"She was a woman among the priests," Hvitserk continues, "I'm sure they have used her in the most holy ways," The brothers laughed as he did a mock cross over his front, placing his hands together in false prayer with a smirk.
"I think we shall have fun with her,"
Artemis gritted her teeth harshly, thinking they would surely shatter. She didn't fully understand all the words that they spoke, some terms escaped her, but she knew enough to know what they were getting at.
"She is to be given to Ivar," Bjorn calls from behind, as if reminding them of his presence.
There was a collective groan, before one of them barks for the others to shut up. Artemis whips her head in the direction of the voice. It was another male, sat at a table in the far side of the cabin. She hadn't noticed him at all.
There was a strange expression on his face, and she didn't understand that such an expression was betraying how hard he fought his demons. His eyes bore into hers as he sets his lips into a tight line. There was something in those unusual eyes that she couldn't make out, a malicious glint that drowned in the blue of his iris's.
"She is to be gifted to Ivar?" Hvitserk moaned in disappointment, "I almost drown bringing her back and she is to be given to him? I was just beginning to like her."
"Shut up, Hvitserk," Ivar growls, immediately flinging an empty cup at him, hitting Hvitserk spot on before it shatters to the ground in large pieces. Artemis flinches at the sudden movement, stepping away in response.
"So this is Lagertha's plan, hmm?" One of the brothers says, crossing his arms like a child, "To subdue the craziest of Ragnar’s sons?"
"Careful, Sigurd." Bjorn warns. Another name, this one was Sigurd. His blonde hair was braided as well, but it did nothing to accentuate his features, only his eyes were prominent, almost as blue as Ivar's.
Ignoring the shattered pieces on the floor, he goes to circle her form, eyeing her as Bjorn had done. She was rather small, unlike the tall women of Kattegat, and her dress was nothing he had seen before. Her long hair was dark, and her skin was kissed by the sun. But it was her eyes that were the most captivating to him. They were paler than anything he'd seen before.
"Stop eyeing her that way, she's not yours," Grunts the last of them with a sigh. He already seemed tired of such trivial talk. He resembled Bjorn greatly, with the same blue eyes and long blonde hair braided back in a rope like fashion. Actually, they all seem to have the same blue intensity in their eyes. Artemis wondered just how many brothers there were.
"Easy for you to say, Ubbe, you have Margarthe," Sigurd mutters, sparing Artemis one last glance before kicking the shattered pieces of the cup towards the brother that threw it.
"Clean up your mess."
Ivar, already bubbling up with his retaliation was stopped by Ubbe, who began to pick up the pieces himself with another sigh.
"We've brought in new captives. You want one? Go buy one," Bjorn grunts, "This was Lagertha's decision to give Ivar the foreign girl," Bjorn crossed his arms, looking sternly at his younger brothers, and that ended that conversation. Sigurd shrugs, but not before turning to glare at Ivar, who returned it with triple the intensity. There was hatred behind their gazes that could not be ignored.
"No doubt to distract me," Ivar finally says, pushing his plate away, "Does she think gifting me a slave would shy my mind away from her transgressions? She killed our mother," Ivar suddenly hops off the chair and onto the floor with a practiced ease.
Artemis was stunned, watching as he maneuvered his lifeless legs like a snake in the grass. She could've cried out in disbelief, wondering if this was some sort of act.
Ivar drags his body towards her, his short brown hair falling into his eyes with each movement he made. He stopped directly in front of her dirt covered feet, reaching out to touch the blue hem of her once white dress, wrinkling his nose in disgust.
"She stinks of sea water and piss," He spat, looking up to glare at the girl. He finds her looking down at him with an equally intense glare. She skims her eyes over his dirty clothes and filthy hands. He dare to judge her appearance when he crawled about like a hog in the mud?
Ivar snorts, dropping his hand from her dress and twisting his neck to look back at Bjorn.
"What use will she be to me? She's not even pretty," He tells him, turning to glare at Hvitserk when he scoffs with a shake of his head.
"Liar," Hvitserk says, going over to sit beside Ubbe now that the hunger was getting the best of him. Artemis watches him rip the meat off a bone with envious eyes.
"Why would I lie?" Ivar retaliates, turning his eyes back to the captive for more scrutiny.
And...perhaps there was some truth in Hvitserks accusation.
Ivar preferred the pale skin and hair of northern women, though he supposed this girl was pretty in her own way, even with the dirt that covered her cheeks and the hay that decorated her hair.
"Let me take her off your hands then, if she truly disgusts you," Hvitserk was quick to say, wagging his brows in a suggestive way.
"How unlucky of me, that the gods have cursed me with such simple minded brothers," Bjorn suddenly growls out, "Right now the task at hand is to avenge our father in Wessex. We begin preparations tomorrow. As for you Ivar, enjoy your new thrall in whatever way you wish. You shall see to your petty revenge once our business in England is over,"
With that, Bjorn left, leaving the girl trapped under the stare of curious eyes.
...
"I was in your position once," The blonde girl tells her, "Though I feel far more fortunate than you. I would rather kill myself than serve Ivar."
Artemis says nothing, trying instead to cover her naked body away from the girl, though she failed miserably. A couple of young men passing by whooped, their eyes traveling over her form like scavengers. Her body was out in the open and she felt completely ashamed.
They were in the woods, just behind the cabin, bathing herself as best she could with a simple bucket of water. She was covered in weeks worth of filth. Her hair suffered the worst of it, the strands knotted every which way.
"Now is not the time for modesty," The blonde girl continues, with an annoyed sigh, "It is beyond me why Ubbe asked me to watch you." Artemis searches her mind, trying to match the name to the face.
"We don't have all day," The girl mutters with a click of her tongue. She motions with her hands for her to hurry her bathing.
From what Artemis understood, the blonde girl was a former slave, now married to one of the brothers. Besides Helga, this girl was gentle as well, though she was clearly running out of patience. After another moment of watching Artemis bathe, she speaks again.
"My name is Margrethe. Do you understand me?" Artemis nods slowly, keeping her eyes low.
"Good," Margrethe replies, "All you really need is to understand. Speaking would do you no favors." She then tosses the foreign girl a sheet made of a rough material.
"Get dry," The blonde then looks at the crumpled heap of fabric that was once Artemis's dress, "And we must rid you of that dress. It pleases no one to see such a thing." She hands her a another lump of fabric. It was a muddy color, and just like the drying sheet, it was rough to the touch.
"This will be the only thing you wear from now on. Dress yourself." Artemis tosses the drying sheet on the ground, stepping over it to wipe the dirt from her feet before unraveling the dress.
It was ugly.
The fabric felt itchy in her hands, but it was surprisingly warm. She supposed it best to see the good in every dreary situation.
"What's your name?" Margrethe asks, turning her round to help with the back lacing of the dress.
"Artemis." The blonde hums, twirling her back round before handing her a bone comb.
"Your hair needs it. It was a wedding gift, don't break it." Artemis stares at the intricately designed comb before struggling to pass the teeth through her hair.
"I'll give you a bit of a warning," Margrethe begins, "Now that you are Ivar's slave,"
Slave.
A word Artemis would not get use to.
"Do not underestimate him as I once did," She blinked in confusion. Sure, Ivar seemed a bit...off, but what harm could he do crawling about the way he did? Margrethe reads her expression immediately.
"I have been at his mercy before," She explains, "He may look harmless and weak, but he is the most feared and the most dangerous."
"Dangerous?" Artemis repeats.
"Very," The blonde confirms, "And whatever rumors you hear, don't disregard them."

“It was a cold and snowy day…”
“It’s starting to come down.”
“You’d better have our pay ready and waiting.”
“Be ready to pay up. We’ll be back before you know it.”

“It all started on that snowy day.”
“My first impression was… He had potential.”
“I forgot about my job and read everything I had on hand.”
“We were all on an equal footing, fighting under the same conditions. No affiliations or ranks to hinder us.”
“The only rule of engagement was to survive.”
“We WILL survive, [name].”
“I figured you’d say that. This is gonna cost you extra.”
“Unlike you mercenaries, I fight for a real cause.”
“The ones who survive are those who fight for their convictions.”
“Dead men’s words hold no meaning.”
“Those mercenaries are crazy!”
“He hesitated. A vulnerability that can be exploited.”
“I was certain I would win.”
“We protect the meek and give our lives for honor. But that does not mean that we are generous… Since generosity will cost us our lives.”
“Well, then, let’s have some fun.”
“I figured it was just temporary chaos and it’d be over by the time I got there.”
“Every now and then, guys like that appear on a battlefield. Someone special, y’know?”
“War is something fought on the desk of politicians. As long as they win in the end, that’s all that matters.”
“But for us, it’s a matter of survival. In order to survive, you need to be able to analyze the situation in an instant.”
“Time to hunt some wild dogs.”
“Looks like we were just a couple of decoys.”
“Yo, Buddy, you still alive?”
“Back then, I was bursting with pride.”
“Staying where it was nice and warm wouldn’t accomplish anything.”
“Whatever it may be, the fact remains I was forced to walk a different path in life than the one I had envisioned.”
“They only fight for their own power and fame.”
“[name], let’s do this right. We got the pride it takes to win!”
“They’ve got a reason to fight. This battle’s over.”
“Let’s take care of them.”
“It takes time to admit you lost.”
“[name], you hear those people screaming for freedom? That’s where we come in!”
“It felt like he could see right through me. He was always one step ahead of me.”
“I didn’t feel like I was fighting with a human being.”
“I wanted to end that battle as quickly as possible.”
“It signals peace, but to me, they are the sounds of death.”
“Everyone is a hero and a villain. And no one knows who is the victim and who is the aggressor.”
“And what is ‘peace’?”
“Looks like we live to see another day, [name].”
“Mercenaries like us are disposable to the guys in charge.”
“But in the end, we survived.”
“When are you planning to buy those flowers?”
“Wait around too long and another guy’s gonna steal her away from you, you know.”
“This is no time to talk about my personal life!”
“Yo Buddy, you’ve got everyone fired up and believing in miracles.”
“Right on! Now that’s what I call teamwork!”
“[name], you hear that warm welcome? It’s the sweet sound of victory.”
“Not bad for a group of misfits, huh?”
“Dammit, there’s too many of them! We can’t handle them all!”
“Time to dive into the fireworks!”
“Looks like you’ve still got the touch.”
“It’s happening just as you thought.”
“It’s about time we got out of this dead-end job.”
“Not just yet.”
“They’re attacking without mercy. Do they plan on burning everything?”
“He can’t be human!”
“He’s like a demon…”
“I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“I fight for peace. That’s what I’m up here for.”
“While you’re up here ‘fighting for peace,’ tons of blood is being shed on the ground. Some ‘peace,’ kid.”
“And I’m here to put an end to that.”
“You think you can stop the bloodshed by shedding more blood?”
“Flying with all those ideas floating around in your head is gonna get you killed.”
“Anyway, I’d really gone out with a bang this time.”
“It’s a scary thought, but it also makes you feel alive.”
“But it gets pretty lonely up there all by myself.”
“Guess they’ve come to pick on the dead again.”
“This is the worst kind of support we could hope for.”
“Those mercenaries smell of money and death. They’re nothing but vultures… Scavenging for profit through the blood of others.”
“Sorry about the accommodations. It goes with the business. I’m not active during the day.”
“Something unexpected happened.”
“I figured the least I could do was take them down in return.”
“Of course, that was where my luck ran out.”
“Though I guess it’s hard for bad guys like us to die.”
“The real heroes always manage to die first.”
“We live the rest of our lives in hell.”
“But, then again, being alive is proof that we were good.”
“This will be your final lesson.”
“I’ll show him he’s only digging his own grave.”
“What’s important on the battlefield is to let go of hate, to survive, and to adhere to the rules you’ve set for yourself.”
“There was no more need for an old soldier like me.”
“Hatred cannot be the only motivation for war. It only brings about more pointless deaths.”
“I will never overcome that grief.”
“I’ll just look on from here.”
“He was unstoppable.”
“It didn’t matter where the battlefield was, the man had complete trust in his own powers.”
“He was born for battle, a Demon Lord who struck down all opposition.”
“He was born for combat. It was no wonder they called him a Demon Lord.”
“That said, it was hell trying to keep up with him.”
“He was cool-headed and proud. A combat professional.”
“Maybe the man was blessed by the goddess of war.”
“Before long, everyone had taken notice of him.”
“People wanted to burn his image in their memories.”
“Hell, they weren’t the only ones.”
“Learn to accept it, kid. This is war.”
“There’s no mercy in war. It’s a collision of powers.”
“Even war has a set of rules to follow!”
“Damn them all…”
“Nobody knew why they were fighting anymore.”
“All I felt at that point was sadness for the world.”
“You gonna get remarried to your girl?”
“We’re both getting married for the first time!”
“Don’t worry, I’ll catch up.”
“Nah… I’m just sad.”
“There’s no impossible jobs for us mercenaries!”
“Your fairy godmother’s here, Cinderella.”
“How can you say that after what just happened?”
“Today is your lucky day, [name]. Like your birthday.”
“And you’re here to pull me off in a magical carriage, huh? To hell I suppose…”
“Buddy… I’ve found a reason to fight.”
“This is where we go our separate ways.”
“And I like to play polo. You know, the game with the horses?”
“…Maybe we should get going now.”
“I should be able to do that too.”
“This war should be over already.”
“Why would they do this after all that’s happened?”
“I’m going to put an end to this war.”
“We’ll decide when this war ends… And now is not the time.”
“Today is a day of hope.”
“We have to go into battle.”
“Are they being stupid or is it just part of a plan?”
“The rest is up to you.”
“Our lives might’ve been different.”
“I will never forget his overwhelming power.”
“I returned alive from that battlefield.”
“There’s no meaning there now that he’s gone.”
“He soon passed away, leaving me behind.”
“We were only able to spend a short time together in peace and quiet.”
“But those who hearts are in the sky will always return to the sky.”
“And he died there, never to return to me.”
“It’s an awful place, but the fastest shortcut.”
“Don’t even think about heading back.”
“What are you fighting for?”
“I will eliminate the false hero.”
“You will make a worthy opponent.”
“What are you doing?! The war’s ended long ago!”
“It’s time for a perfect world without restrictions or wars.”
“He’s going to destroy everything!”
“I’ll follow [name] to the end!”
“I thought I was watching magic.”
“I’d never felt fear toward an opponent.”
“The same went for my ideals. I wasn’t afraid to take on even an entire country.”
“But when I was fighting him, something felt different.”
“There’s always a war somewhere and I’m sure he’s on some battlefield somewhere fighting even now.”
“He’ll always have a place to live.”
“Let the victor be justice.”
“I was hoping to meet you under different circumstances.”
“The table is surrounded by politicians who have never placed a foot on the battlefield.”
“It’s a necessary discussion to build a peaceful world.”
“It’s a disgusting squabble on who gets the largest share of the pie and that’s why it needs to end.”
“It is for that duty that we raised the King.”
“Let’s begin.”
“This place is no longer a battlefield.”
“Clashing greed is the cause of all conflict.”
“Style and skill does not matter in battle.”
“We will carry out the new creation of destruction through the power of righteousness.”
“Territories, peoples, authorities… All will be liberated.”
“Neither nations nor nationalities have meaning.”
“We will erase these unnecessary borders.”
“The world will change.”
“He’s not destroying anything unnecessarily.”
“This darkness and that little window are my entire world now.”
“I’m actually rather fond of it.”
“The darkness envelops me in a borderless world, a world with no boundaries.”
“No matter what the desired outcome is, the world can still change as long as people expand their knowledge and desire change.”
“If I’m with you, I know I can do it.”
“I’ll follow your lead.”
“We’re gonna stop it, no matter what.”
“I never want to see that barren land again.”
“We’re gonna be rich!”
“We’re gonna be heroes!”
“I’m gonna propose to her when I get back. I even bought flowers!”
“So, have you found a reason to fight yet?”
“Here comes the snow…”
“Those who survive a long time on the battlefield start to think they’re invincible.”
“I bet you do too, Buddy.”
“Can you see any borders from here? What has borders given us?”
“We’re going to start over from scratch.”
“It’s pretty ironic, Buddy. A couple of dogs like us fighting the last battle.”
“There’s no mercy in war. People live and people die. That’s all there is to it.”
“You fired up? Come shoot me down.”
“It’s time.”
“Too bad, Buddy.”
“This twisted game needs to be reset.”
“You’re the only one who can stop him.”
“I pray for your success.”
“You and I are opposite sides of the same coin.”
“When we face each other, we can finally see our true selves.”
“There may be a resemblance, but we never face the same direction.”
“Fire away, coward!”
“Come on!”
“Come on, let’s go back home.”
“We wouldn’t want to keep anyone waiting for you.”
“Maybe this was one path to achieve peace.”
“I should have died that day. But I didn’t.”
“I felt an unbearable sadness when I witnessed that landscape.”
“It may be true that the world has no need of borders. But would getting rid of them really change anything?”
“The world won’t change for the better unless we trust people.”
“Trust is vital in a peaceful world.”
“But that’ll never happen.”
“I want to see for myself what borders really mean and what their volition really is…”
“I may not find what I’m looking for but I still wanna try.”
“Anyway, that’s what I’ve come to believe and I think that’s enough.”
“Yo Buddy. Still alive?”
“And thanks friend. See you again.”
“I was never able to find out what kind of a person he really was.”
“But whenever they talked about him, they always had a slight smile on their faces.”
“That, perhaps, might be my answer.”

Horizon Zero Dawn Review
Tumblr media
The game that critics have been raving about for years and I just haven't played. I heard a lot of people say "this needs a movie" but they say that about any game that dares to be a little bit cinematic because I personally disagree.
That first part is rough, the story seems so in your face, predictable and bland but I think the problem is that it didn't know how to put in its exposition. I think it naturally builds up as it goes on, getting bigger and broader, it's just those first experiences that can be a slog because you're pretty much learning what style you're going to play in.
I got more or less everything I expected, crafting, a skill tree, various weapons. What I didn't expect though are dialogue options. You can choose normally up to four paths, an intelligent one, a compassionate one, and a straightforward one. You don't have to worry about the stress of trying to reach a specific ending because there's really only one, the only thing that affects it is the amount of people that are in it. So does that make the choices irrelevant? Yes and no because there are different dialogue options and like I said, which means that you can get certain characters to like you more given the option you choose but not in the same way that relationship points work and I definitely felt the draw to do that whenever I came across my first side-quest.
Tumblr media
Side-quests are interesting, I love tracking things in games, though it's rare that you actually get the chance to do it and here you have a good amount of opportunities. Is that all though? Far from it. I actually found myself searching for side-quests because the first two were so satisfying. It really only began to show its hand a bit more after those quests. As I mentioned, there are a lot more RPG elements than I first imagined but it starts to send you on scavenger hunts, especially that Dreamwillow one, that one I actually laughed out loud at every time I was turned away. It also starts to gatekeep to where it recommends that you be a certain level which is...odd? I mean at face value it looks like you could rock basically any combat situation that isn't context sensitive. Leveling up gives you abilities but they're more like Deus Ex on that front, where it's just for preference and upgrading, not necessarily strength. The only thing you improve on offense wise basically boils down to having the right materials or units to buy weapons then a matter of finding modifications. Other than that, leveling up seems to just increase your health. It really just depends on the quest too because I'll play one above my level and be fine then play another that's actually under my level and feel stuck.
Now I only played it on normal mode so something like "Ultra Hard" is bound to be more demanding but as far as actual side quest content, I feel like they have potential but just need tweaked, give me more stuff for major characters that affects their standing with me. Rather than having each quest be contained in its own story, have it affect you later in the game, let your actions be shown, give it rewards and consequences. There are some really great side-quests but there are also some crappy ones, it doesn't pass that threshold that most RPGs fall under or anything. However, I did find myself doing side-quests at my own free will and the ones that I didn't like or couldn't do at the time, I just skipped and focused on something else, I felt a lot more freedom with this game, like I didn't feel forced to grind or do a certain number of side-quests or really do anything. It encourages you to explore and play the way you want to play and I respect the heck out of that. Maybe it's different for other players though.
Perhaps my favorite actual side thing was the Cauldrons for those who actually played this, you'll know why. For those who didn't, just know that it's cool and let it be a surprise for when you go to one. You might expect these big set-pieces and bosses like Uncharted or GoW, but it's not really like that. I genuinely think that this is more video-gamey than it lets on which certainly takes up its runtime. One addition to side-quests that I would like to see is one where you don't know it's happening. For example, in this game, you'll come across random hunters who are attacking or being attacked by machines but rather than just going on about your day and them going on about their's, I want to fight off the machine and the person say "You saved my life, my name's Jara, I live in the town nearby and want to repay you." so you go there and there's trouble so it starts up a side-quest. Now don't get me wrong, there are PLENTY of instances of people getting attacked actually being a mission but most of the time someone in town will just tell you "I haven't seen this person in a while, can you go check on them for me?" It's the art of subtlety and also just doing a good deed and getting rewarded for it. It's a conscious choice and split decision rather than just another checkmark on your list to complete.
Tumblr media
Now I won't bother listing the characters and rating them but there's a certain aspect that has me really enthused So, Aloy is an outcast and a lot of these side missions and scenarios reflect her, you'll see the way she can relate with other characters, making it almost poetic in a subliminal kind of way. Then they add this tribal and futuristic setting to it where Aloy acts as the medium, there are parts of the game where she questions the tribe because they cut themselves off from technology and just don't know any better and we as a viewer know that but having the main character view things in 'our' lens is pretty genius. To top that off, they give her enough personality to be her own character while giving us enough power to influence her so that we ourselves can REFLECT WITH HER. It's not her character that I'm impressed with, it's the layout of the story.
So, how is the main story? It's kind of like the Flood scenario in Halo if I'm being honest. I'm not going to spoil anything but it's passable, like I said, it's not like an Uncharted and it's not like a movie. The visuals just look good at times (I took all the pictures in this review myself and so much more!). I'd call it a futuristic/tribal mix between Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Skyrim but I see elements of a lot of things. (Also since it's post apoctalypic, you find items that we see in modern day, like how they call keys, "chimes"! They think they're windchimes because there are no more cars! I love that!)
It actually does a pretty good job at being an open world considering that there are tons of things to do on your routes as well as collect but it's not so much so that it seems unfeasible, as I said, I found myself doing a good chunk of the side stuff just because it was fun to do and I'm not even close to a completionist for any game. If you mess up, healing plants will still be there. As long as you save, enemy parts will still be there. A place can be cleared out and conquered so that enemies don't come back. The actual towns are peaceful so you can't get mangled by any bots outside of scripted instances.
The graphics are pretty good but I can see some error here and there, nothing necessarily game breaking but the animations and AI are definitely janky at times. It's pretty obvious from the get-go but I'll do my best to specify and give constructive criticism on what I found wrong with certain aspects of the game. Rost is slow, like slower than walking speed but that's not to speak for all NPCs, some run, some you don't need to follow, it was really just him. I've had NPCs who fight but miss every single time on simple enemies (that might not be a bug, that might just be a funny bit that someone decided to add in). Sabretooths have jumped through walls (granted the walls were kinda broken but I'm not sure if those big boys can fit when they can barely find the entrance) I found myself jumping to a ledge or on a rope but not land it and just drop (it really boils down to loosening the hit box for that). Which to add on to that, I would like more places to climb and jump to in general (other than stupid mountains). I felt like there wasn't really enough that I could climb and the places that I could, could've been a bit more obvious that I could, maybe even make it viewable with your focus if you don't want it to be visually outstanding. There's a day and night cycle and while I like that, I found some of the contrast to be annoying because I could be staring a ladder right in the face and not even know it sometimes because it would be so dark. I'm not going to complain too much about it because I didn't turn my brightness up, I just left it at default and I would assume the PS5 version fixes some of those little things.
Tumblr media
Now, this one is kind of a gray area: Hiking up mountains. Skyrim, Fallout, and Death Stranding went too far and gave little to no barriers. They had you looking for sweet spots that weren't there in order to cheese your way through an area either on or off a beaten path. But I would compare this to something like GTA where it's not as bad and does have its limits but might need tightened up some more because I can certainly get to places that lead to nowhere.
I've made headshots that don't make contact or damage while using precision. Part of that problem was that they could be high up in a tower (which have spikes sticking out) and I would hit ABOVE the logs, to make a headshot but since it was in that vicinity, it registered that as the spikes' hitbox so it wouldn't cause any damage and just alert the enemy (same if I was in the tower, looking down). Input lag where I hit up button on the D-Pad to regain health and I have to keep pressing it. If I had to guess, you have to meet the requirements of not taking damage, staying still, etc in order for it to actually work but it doesn't really have a reason to do that and it doesn't "tell" you that those are the requirements (as far as I know).
During the final boss, one of the enemies hit me into a rock wall, trapping me inside of it and the boss was already half health so I really didn't want to have to restart (I also didn't know how far back the checkpoint was) so I kept shooting stuff and eventually the boss destroyed the wall, allowing me to get out (timed section, by the way). There have been a few times where a tree or leaf or something is obstructing a cutscene and sometimes there will be a mech in the background screaming over the NPC talking, which I'm sure is due to the cutscenes being real-time which is still pretty impressive. Now are these errors all the time? No, not at all, I'm just pointing out that some times these things happened and that I felt it needed ironed out but I wouldn't call this half baked or an unfinished product or anything, it's nowhere near that level. I get that there are so many NPCs that it's hard to account for them all with facial animations but whenever they're talking, it seems pretty static and sometimes the lips don't line up. There's this one guy who says that he got lost in a sandstorm but he's standing in snow. Again, little nitpicks in an otherwise great game.
Now, I got this game for free as a Playstation promotion but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be great, I played a little bit of that Ratchet & Clank reboot that was offered and I wasn't impressed, I quit after the first few worlds and was glad I didn't buy it at launch, (despite being a classic PS2 R&C fan) but we're not here to review that. I also played Abzu and loved it but it was short so it was definitely worth a play but maybe not 60$ (I actually think it's 20$ at this point though). With this game, it's the whole complete edition with DLC and everything, it has the length, so it really just boils down to "Would I have spent money on it otherwise?"
I think I would've if I knew more about it because I think it just got better and better after that first part of the game. It's marketed a bit differently than what I ended up getting but I found myself pouring hours into this game and loving it for one reason or another. I actually bought Shadow of the Colossus along with it (which is considered a cult classic) but I liked Horizon so much better, definitely worth its full price in my opinion. (So your promotion worked on me Sony, congrats) It has its problems but the potential is there and I feel like a sequel would probably iron out a lot of my troubles with it, so it's definitely a franchise worth investing into.
If you're interested in what I thought of the DLC alone (if you didn't get the Ultimate edition and are wondering if the extra content is worth it) I have a separate post that goes into that here.

Ltleflrt’s Writing Year in Review
Once again I felt like I could do more this year, so this is the theme for the decade.  But I got SO MUCH DONE too!  And more than I did last year, so I’m happy to see an improvement :D
Total 2019 Word Count: 215,491 Total 2019 Kudos: 7,581 Total 2019 Hits: 63,620
My 2019 Fics:
Dreaming in Digital: 173,818 words (44,142 from 2019)
When Dean finds a deactivated sex bot, he knows it’s his lucky day.
Set in a Cyberpunk world where global warming and climate change has driven most of the human population into domed cities, Sam and Dean hunt rogue tech and science experiments gone wrong in the shadows, protecting the lives of those the government doesn't care about anymore. On a trip to the dump to scavenge for valuables Dean finds Castiel, an Angel Industries sex bot, which is worth his weight in credits. But when he turns the sex bot on, he learns that Castiel is sentient.
Artificial Intelligence is illegal, and for good reason, but Cas doesn't put off dangerous vibes. That doesn't stop Sam from researching his creators while Dean's off making friends with the android. If there's someone out there creating a robot army unconstrained by the 3 rules of robotics, Sam's going to make sure the operation is shut down for good.
Castiel just wants to exist. He wants to read and work in the Winchester's greenhouse and have movie nights with Dean. But he also wants to understand. Himself. His unexpected reaction to Dean. What it it means to feel.
I started this fic in February 2018, and finished it in April 2019.  As of this post, it is the longest thing I’ve ever written.  And definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever written.  You know that saying about blood, sweat, and tears?  So true. (the blood was from a cat scratch when Kitty Cas tried to jump in my lap while I was writing and I got clawed, but it counts!)  I am proud of the results, even if I got tired of it and cut out a bunch of stuff I wanted to do.  2020 goal is some timestamps!
Where The Heart Lives: 12,876 words
Home is where the heart is, but it's nice to have a cozy little love nest too.
A collection of related short ficlets without a plot. Just small glimpses of Dean and Castiel being happy and in love.
This was a 30 day art challenge called Cottagetober, that I turned into writing prompts and added a 31st day since it was an October thing and I wanted a ficlet for every day.  Writing these fluffy snippets every day made me very happy, and I think I might do something similar in 2020 if I can find a list that sparks joy.
Reunited: 2,681 words
Castiel has changed a lot in the 10 years since he was a shy bookworm in High School. But it seems like few of his previous schoolmates have grown up much, if the revival of the rumor mill as soon as he walked in is any indication.
Dean Winchester certainly grew up, though. And he seems far more interested in Castiel than the rumors.
Written as a prompt from  @melilovesmakeup-blog, this little fic spawned much joy, and inspired a prequel from @bendingsignpost, which is honestly so dang flattering.  I love this little universe, and I’m heckin’ glad I randomly decided to take prompts.
Cloud Nine: 2,254 words
“Hey, angel.” Dean’s voice is warm with love and pride, and it makes Castiel squirm in his bindings. “You think you can take more?”
I love finding new ways to write non-traditional a/b/o!  One day I was driving around, and thought you know what I need?  Dom!Omega!Dean and sub!Alpha!Cas.  Not a lot of it out there yet, so had to write it myself.  And I really want to revisit this and write a prequel.  I Have Ideas!
The Git (you) Up: 1,323 words
Dean's been crushing on his new neighbor across the street from afar. When he gets an invitation to a neighborhood BBQ, he's finally going to meet the hottie. Now if only he can get the courage to talk to him.
I saw a ridiculously cute video on the internet and I was inspired!
Burning For You: 1,998 words
Due to their busy schedules, Sam and Eileen hire a wedding planner. As Best Man, Dean steps in to help as much as he can. The fact that Castiel is gorgeous and immune to the dangers of Dean's touch is a bonus.
Another prompt!  I do prompts like never, but I’m so glad I did and got this one.  I had an immediate, and visceral need to write this fic as soon as I saw the ask, so thank you very much @alessariel!  This prompt was for both of us! :D
To Build A Bower: 633 words
Dean decorates his home to attract a mate.
Look.  Look.  I just really fuckin’ love bower birds okay?  Okay.  Thanks for the prompt @zarauthforsaken!
Special Delivery:  2,012 words
Castiel accidentally gets a package meant for his sexy neighbor.
Another prompt! From @queenandthree <3
Fun story about this fic, the premise was originally going to be used in Satin and Sawdust, but got discarded.  I’m thrilled I found a reason to use it in a short story!
Work Life Balance: 2,227 words
As leader of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, one of Dean's duties is to balance Order with Entropy, and enforce the will of the Fates. When Castiel's nature as the demigod of War urges him to destroy more than he should, he seeks out Dean's council.
A prompt from @kazshero!  I have had Four Horsemen headcanons for years, and could never come up with a story for it until I got this prompt.  Super grateful for it!  Death!Dean is my jam :D
The Menagerie: 1,452 words
Baby the Pegasus is giving birth to her first foal. Dean and Castiel are there to help her through it.
A prompt fill for @nickelkeep!  An excuse to turn Baby into a pegasus!  FLUFF! <3
A Trip To The Beach: 734 words
Camp Counselors Dean and Cas take the kids on a field trip to the beach.
Yes, this was definitely based on a conversation I had with @jupiterjames.  When I got the prompt from my bestie, I *had* to make it about us lol
Quoth the... Wait that's not a Raven: 930 words
Dean, Castiel, and Sam are paranormal investigators. Tonight's haunted spot is a Pet Store.
A prompt from @purgatory-jar!  And to be honest, I may revisit this idea with something longer someday.  Writing TFW as paranormal investigators is too much fun to pass up :D
Hunter's Caress: 142,229 words (WIP)
Castiel Jameson won't rest until the outlaw who murdered his brother faces justice, and Dean Winchester is the only man alive who can help him track the villain down. Some say Winchester is a cold-blooded killer himself; others say he'd been wronged his whole life. All Castiel knows is that the desire glinting in Dean's green eyes is even more dangerous than he is. Castiel fights to keep his mind on business, but during the long nights on the trail with the dangerously handsome hunter he finds himself dreaming of yielding to Dean's illicit kisses and losing himself in lawless passion.
Dean Winchester is about to hang when Castiel saves his neck with his crazy plan. But dying might be better than spending day and night playing nursemaid to such an infuriating city slicker. He appreciates the stubborn detective's desire for justice, but he'd appreciate Cas a lot more if he'd stop being a lawman long enough to just be a man. He certainly has all the right equipment. Dean aches to run his fingers through Castiel's dark hair, yearns to know how Castiel's golden skin will feel against him. And before the coming of the next dawn, Dean vows to teach him the pleasures and sweet rewards of a Hunter's Caress.
I’ve had this idea since the first year I started writing Destiel fic, and it’s been sitting in my WIP folder since 2014.  I don’t want to be done writing Destiel, but I’ve been struggling with my writing for about 2 years now, and I’m afraid it will only get worse when the show ends and the fandom starts to slow down without new content.  I figure if I don’t do this story now, it’ll never get done.  And that’s unacceptable, because this has been on my mind for far too long to let it never see the light of day.  Of all of my stories, this one is the most For Myself thing I’ve ever written.  And based on the way it’s going, it’s probably going to overtake Dreaming in Digital as my longest fic by the time it’s done lol

A few more quarantine pics and the first week of FREEDOM
Just a few little joys that helped get me though quarantine:
Tumblr media
This “Vitamin Water” is delicious. A very light version of gatorade. It’s so refreshing in the heat and humidity.
Tumblr media
A sweet send-off gift from this girl❤️. I can’t even tell you how many hours that sky took to finish😆.
Tumblr media
Spent many evenings painting while watching Parks and Rec. Watercoloring was a fun new hobby I picked up thanks to some paints Mom sent me with.
Tumblr media
An authentic Sicilian meal thanks to ingredients mailed over from a dear friend in Italy!
Tumblr media
Simple pleasures of a cup of coffee and quiet time post morning workout.
These along with many hours of virtual time with family and friends helped keep me sane and made the quarantine process not altogether unenjoyable.
✼✼✼✼✼✼
The much awaited phone call came Monday morning.. COVID test is negative and I’m free to leave my room!! Funny enough, as I was rushing outside, most everyone else was hunkering down in preparation for the coming typhoon. By the time I had walked over to the hospital and stopped by the post office, the warm salty breeze had turned into threatening gusts. I made it back just as the rain started, and by 1100 we were back in lockdown. So thankful for those couple hours to stretch my legs at least!
The typhoon itself was exciting! What a welcome to Okinawa. The wind and rain picked up and blew all Monday night, Tuesday and into Tuesday evening. At its worst, the winds were 57mph with 80mph gusts, so nothing like hurricane strength. But they sure made some impressive noises as they whistled then ebbed then crashed into the window with a snap. It felt almost like the building was being hit with a bullwhip. The pressure and force were incredible. Thankfully there was very little structural damage. Just some broken tree branches. Most of the buildings seem to be made of concrete and it sounds like things are just built to withstand the storms here.
When Wednesday morning rolled around, the weather was mostly clear and it was time to start the check in process. First up, take a driver’s test so I could be eligible to drive and buy a car. With license in hand, back to the hospital to begin the scavenger hunt of checking in.
The hospital is really a beautiful building. Set on top of a hill overlooking the ocean. It’s relatively new, under 10 years, and still feels shiny on the inside. It operates around 60-75 inpatient beds which feels cozy and welcoming compared to the large 250+ beds of Balboa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trying to look cute and professional on my “first day of school”😁.
Mostly check-in consists of a lot of admin tasks. Going to different offices, making sure my information is in all the systems. But the best part was meeting my new Division Officer and having an introduction to the Emergency Department where I’ll be working! I’m sure looking forward to starting. I can’t believe it’s been over two months since I’ve been at the bedside.
Thursday - more checking in at the hospital, breakfast burrito at the shoppette (easy, cheap, and surprisingly delicious: these could be dangerous😳). Test drove a car - first time driving on the left side of the road, yikes! Rubbed the tires against the left curb once but didn’t crash into anything. I loved the car! Plan to buy it tomorrow.
Friday morning spent at the hospital - mostly done with check in. Then bought the car! The process is a bit different: the seller and I went to the licensing office together then over to the insurance office where we had to wait in line for an hour in the hot sun - I sweat buckets, still getting used to the humidity. Purchased insurance and was given a temporary title while the official one is prepared, and that’s it! Came home with a Subaru Forester (I guess you could say I have a thing for Subies). A perfect scuba gear hauler and my current ticket to freedom - aka all the ramen 😋.
Tumblr media
Back to the hospital to finish a couple things before the weekend. Then took my first venture off base! This was honestly terrifying. I had thought driving on the left side wouldn’t actually be that difficult. Which I think that part itself was pretty easy to get used to. But combined with trying to navigate narrow, ally-like streets, a whole new set of traffic signs, and street names I couldn’t read, it was a bit overwhelming. Thankfully the Waze app works well here. I think I’ll be pretty reliant on it for a little while.
Tumblr media
I managed to make it to a ramen spot, pointed at something on the menu and found myself with this delicious bowl of ramen. Well worth any trouble it took to procure.
Tumblr media
I also made it to the ocean this trip. This is one of the sea wall areas. There’s a nice walking path that runs for about a mile along this area. The water is so warm! I think it was 80ºF this day. Sure looking forward to going for a swim!
I stopped by the commissary on the way home to grab a few groceries. There was supposed to be another typhoon pass by over the weekend and I was running low.
In general, I’m definitely feeling more free but also a bit overwhelmed. I didn’t expect so much culture shock. As much as I love adventure, I think I’m realizing I’m not one who thrives in total transition. I’m excited because I know transition provides such an opportunity for growth, but I’m also very much looking forward to being more settled and having a place to call home again. I’m currently looking for apartments off base and will hopefully have one in the next week or two.
There are so many things I’m looking forward to doing here: learning to scuba dive, getting a dog, meeting friends, spearfishing, cooking, exploring all the restaurants and markets, and visiting historical sites. But I’m realizing it’s okay to pace myself a little. I think some of the things I learned during quarantine of slowness and Sabbath are really healthy and I want to incorporate them into my weekly rhythms now. Even if that means some days I choose to stay home rather than do a fun new activity, that’s okay. I have two years after all. No need to rush into everything.

When Darkness Emerges- Avery’s Confession (Part 1)(M!Avery x MC)
So I decided to write Avery’s confession myself, because why not? This will be a series of fics, to which this is the first part.
This fic was inspired by this ask, sent by @aloehasrose:
Tumblr media
This fic is dedicated to my fellow Avery stans: @a-i-n-a-a-s-h @mysticmiraculer @flowerpowell @unicornfatty @aloehasrose @itsbrindleybinch @kingliamsbish @jlpplays1 and @lady-kato !
Tagging also @mariaoz and @desiree-0816 , my wonderful friends! ❤
Pairing: M!Avery x MC (Dawn)
Summary: Avery decides to take Dawn on a little scavenger hunt. This one, however, is a bit different than what she will expect...
Unedited.
Note: Idk if it's just me but for some reason my phonr doesn't show the gaps I put, but the computer does. So for easier reading I suggest you read this from the computer. ^-^
---------
Dear Dawn,
I've noticed you've been a bit more bored lately, so I have a little scavenger hunt prepared for you.
Meet me outside the building where we had our first real kiss. You know the one.
-Avery "Freaking" Wilshere
Dawn smiled at the note Avery left in her trailer. It was so like him to tease her for that moment when they first met. Looking back at it now, she made a complete fool of herself. Seriously, if she could go back in time and make it un-embarrassing, she would.
As per Avery's instructions, Dawn met him at the entrance to his New York mansion. He was dressed in his usual pink shirt, the same mischievous smile on his face. Once she stood beside him, Avery took her hand and led him to his Audi. Dawn groaned, but Avery didn't give in. He pulled her till they were standing in front of his convertible, staring at each other.
"Another one?" Dawn asked with mock exasperation. Her eyes sparked with her familiar enthusiasm, waiting for the next adventure Avery would take her on.
"You don't seem that disappointed." He observed.
"But what about the scavenger hunt?"
Avery cupped her cheek. "This is the first step, love. Once you pass this, you'll get the clue to the second one."
Dawn's grin grew. "Intriguing."
Avery prssed a quick kiss to her forehead before walking over to the other side of the car. "Let's go."
They drove past the hundreds of the skyscrapers, into more rural territories. With music in their ears, time passed much faster than usual. Dawn found herself belting out to songs, accompanied by Avery's melodious voice. They truly were a power couple, and the music industry better beware!
"We're almost there." Avery declared after too short a time.
The nerves and exhilaration immediately returned. Dawn's heart beat at the pace of the pounding music and her hands once more became sweaty. She looked out the window, admiring the green fields that were now surrounding them. A place of solitude, of quiet, was the perfect remedy for her stressful life. She wasn't dreading this, but rather looking forward to Avery's surprise. What was he going to show her?
They parked at a very remote area. Dawn scanned her surroundings as if she was a detective in a very serious mystery. Where was this place? What did this bare hill have that was so special?
Avery gently took hold of her hand. Dawn breathed in relief when she realized her palms weren't as sweaty now. The sound of rushing water reminded her of all those meditation classes she took years ago and the colorful flowers gave her hope and strength. Yes, they were up high. And sure, there was no guarantee no one was pushed off this cliff, but... positive thoughts?
She glanced at Avery, and when his eyes met hers her worry deflated. She released a shaky breath and let out all her doubt. Why was she so nervous? Avery was here, beside her, and he would always be there for her. Because he was hers, and she was his.
Huh. It was still strange to think of them like that.
"This way." Avery pulled her along, his warmth soothing all her fears. Yes, she was still scared of falling to her death, but she needed to remember. Everything. Was. Okay. It will be okay.
But her mind rebelled against her very sound logic. She looked at the ledge and imagined falling to her death. It would be painful and awfully embarrassing, but she already had a bad fall at the Vinyl awards. This couldn't be that much worse, right?
She really needed to stop thinking. This was not helping one bit.
"Um... where are you taking us?" Dawn's voice wobbled. She tried not to think about this, but her boyfriend was taking her closer to the ledge. And she wasn't ready to test for herself how painful this fall would be.
Avery's eyes met hers. They twinkled in the late-morning sun, shining him in a way Dawn never experienced before. "Somewhere secret. You'll love it."
For a moment Dawn forgot to breathe, before she remembered that it wouldn't be smart to die from her boyfriend's beauty. So, reluctantly, she lowered her gaze. "Okay."
Avery chuckled as he tightened her hold on her hand. "Don't worry, love. I won't let anything happen to you."
"Alright."
Dawn waited for him to leave, but Avery was now frozen. She frowned as she gently touched his shoulder. "Hey, is something wrong?"
Avery blushed. "No, everything's fine. I just-" he trailed off. Dawn frowned, but before she could question him, Avery started descending a narrow path. It almost seemed like he was familiar with this area, but Dawn couldn't concentrate on that fact. She was too busy holding onto a rock nearby; AKA not falling to her death.
She was so focused on this small assignment that she was surprised when Avery stopped. "Is this it?" she blurted before raising her gaze.
What she saw stole her breath away.
It was a simple waterfall, shorter than the hill itself. It looked so quaint among the surrounding hills, like a small diamond that is just happy to be part of the rough. Dawn's eyes shone as she looked at the greenery surrounding it, adding a bit more color to the rocky clusters. She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw a small pool under the waterfall. At least now Dawn knew that even if she would fall off the cliff, she could still survive.
"So this was right under our noses the whole time?"
Avery laughed. "Yes, it was underneath us when we parked. We're now on the opposite side. You see?" He wrapped an arm around her shoulder and pointed at the top of a hill.
"That explains quite a bit."
They stood there, watching the water cascading down the rocky surface. Dawn marveled at the way the water fell into the pool, sending water drops everywhere. Avery pulled her closer,  and Dawn automatically lay her head on his shoulders. She breathed in the cool air and the muscles in her body slowly relaxed. This was harmony. This was happiness.
Dawn knew this would become one of those memories she would always look back to. It was clear that this moment with Avery was one she would never forget, because everything in it was perfect. The beautiful view, the sensation of Avery's hand on hers, the comforting sounds. There was nowhere she'd rather be.
She closed her eyes. Avery brushed a loose hair from her forehead, his touch gentle and loving. "I have something for you," he whispered.
"What is it?"
Dawn knew she should open her eyes, but she couldn't. She didn't want to lose this moment, and ridiculous as it may be, she knew that once she would open her eyes everything would disappear.
Thankfully, Avery didn't comment on that. His hand continued stroking her forehead gently, in a manner so pure it was clear how much he cared. Dawn smiled, and from the way Avery's movements slowed she knew he was doing the same.
After too short a time, Avery spoke. "Open your eyes. It's the first part of your prize."
Dawn sighed. "Do I have to?" She was so calm. If it was up to her, she would live in this moment forever.
"I promise it's worth it."
She opened her eyes with a slight huff. "Fine."
Avery's eyes twinkled with so much happiness it was almost worth Dawn's sacrifice. He extracted a small not from his pocket, his cheeks now slightly pink. "Here."
Dawn carefully took the note. She read it quietly, and by the time it ended she couldn't speak.
When darkness emerges, gripping life in its threatening claws
You’re the one who takes my hand
And leads me somewhere far
Away from the hurt and the pain
Of the dark side of fame
To the light of hope, love and a new start
A place where I can be without a broken heart
"Avery... it's beautiful."
He smiled gently. His rough hand cupped her cheek, and his voice was much weaker than usual. "There's more."
Her eyes widened. "There is?"
He nodded. "But those are for later," Avery met her gaze, his eyes twinkling with something indescribable. "For now... I say we have some fun."
"What do you mean?"
He carefully took the note from her hand. Dawn stared at him, her thoughts rendering her speechless, when Avery suddenly took her hand. He zipped his pocket closed, before a mischievous smile rose to his face. "Time to go."
And then he pulled her into the pool with him. Dawn squealed as the water welcomed her, a light laugh escaping her lips. Avery grinned as he waded, then swam, deeper into the water. Dawn followed him hesitantly, but froze when she realized they were heading toward the waterfall. "Avery, why are we going there?"
His eyes twinkled. "I'm curious. Come on."
Reluctantly, Dawn followed her boyfriend. They swam till they were right in front of the waterfall, and then dived together till they reached a wall. Once they reemerged to the air, they were met with a solid stone wall. Avery chuckled as Dawn frowned at the wall. Was this why he brought her here?
"I didn't expect this wall. In movies there's always a cave behind the waterfall, but..." Avery smirked. He climbed onto the slippery floor beside the wall, laughing as his feet slipped on the stone. Dawn carefully drew nearer, and before she knew it she was standing next to Avery on a stone platform.
"So you brought me here because you thought there would be a cave?"
"I wanted to check if the myth was true."
Dawn giggled, but her laughter disappeared when Avery took her hand. She blushed, but before she could decide what to do, Avery pulled her closer. They were now almost touching, and the knowledge sent pleasant tingles through her nerves. Avery lowered his head so they're lips almost touched, his breath fanning her face. "But I also wanted some privacy."
Dawn closed her eyes as she forced a smile to her face. "Really? What for?"
His lips brushed hers. "This."

What's your best vacation memory? ❤️
Oof… there are a couple that stand out from my childhood but I have to go with the Vegas/Pioche trip I took with my dad and my middle sister in 2015.
This is FUCKING LONG so if you feel like reading about it for 6 hours then there’s more under the cut and I’ll throw in some photos at the bottom because this trip really did just make me so happy.
I had joined a photography scavenger hunt group and participated in a couple of rounds (and got some rad photos!) when they decided to hold a meet up. It was held in Vegas and they had classes and photo shoots and group trips out to different places in the surrounding area. I decided to go and booked a hotel room fro the last day of the meet up, but then my mom died. The meet up was about 2 months after that so when I was trying to figure out if I should still go, etc, my sister and my dad said they’d go with me.
On the way there we drove through the desert because we always do and my sister and I played the Alphabet game. It was the most intense game she or I have ever played. We were on x by the time we got into the middle of no man’s land and I managed to get it on a random XTRA semi truck that was parked in the middle of a salt flat. She got it as soon as we got back onto the main road on a car licence plate that was ‘xmasgft’. We went back and forth getting one only for the other to get the same letter seconds later. It was crazy. I was on Z when she was on Y and at one point she started saying ‘oh shit oh fuck oh shit’ and I started to panic thinking we were about to get into a car accident or something… when she stopped panicking I asked her what her problem was and apparently we’d passed a billboard for Zoomanity and she was panicking that I was gonna win. Her panicking distracted me and I didn’t get the Z. She ended up getting her Y and immediately after I found another Z on a sign that said ‘construction zone’ and it was the best ‘fuck you’ and the most victorious win of, like, anything that I’d experienced up until that point. It was fantastic!
When we got into town I never did make it to the meet ups lol. I saw one person I know from the group while walking out of the hotel, but that was about it. I didn’t really have it in me to branch out and go to the meet up functions by myself so I didn’t. Instead I hung out with my family. We went zip lining over Freemont street and walked around, we went to the Mob Museum (which was fascinating), we did the Mandalay Bay Aquarium, and went out to the Hoover Dam. I’d never been and it was really cool, it was a gorgeous day and it we took a bunch of cute pictures there.
We’d all made a pact that we were going to do the controlled free-fall that they offer at the Stratosphere but when we got up to the top and watched a few people do it we all collectively noped out lol. We ate at this restaurant near the Stratosphere called The Peppermill that is FUCKING FANTASTIC. The food was good but the ambiance. Holy shit. It was like Vegas in the early 80s threw up in there. It was so good. Just neon lights and mirrors and tacky carpet and too many potted plants. The waitress was your classic sassy waitress, which only added to the experience, and my sister ordered the ‘mammoth pancakes’. It came with two and the plate weighed like 4 pounds!
We did a few other things but I remember just being in a good mood the whole trip. I had gotten a throw pillow with Dean’s face on it before the trip and I took it with us so we could sleep in the car comfortably and I remember taking pictures with the Dean pillow like everywhere we went and it became a funny sort of adventure with him. I was also talking to a guy on my dating app that I was like, legit in love with. Everything about him felt so perfect and I remember telling my sister that if he magically transported to Vegas while we were still there that I’d 100% marry him.
This was also the first time being in Vegas since I’d turned 21 (that Vegas trip was a fucking nightmare!) and this really made up for it. I got drunk downstairs at the hotel and won like 80 bucks on a machine, which was the most I’d ever won at that point, so we had to stop and play that machine at every casino we saw it at. My sister and I had also been on a Ghost Adventures kick before that and there’s a very specific sound that one of their devices makes and the elevator at the hotels all made that sound, so we were constantly making it and giggling at it. All in all, it was just a lot of fun and a lot of like, solid bonding and enjoyment of the experiences we were having and who we were with.
Keep in mind, ^^^^THAT’S ALL STILL JUST VEGAS! ^^^
Tumblr media
Since we’d been on the Ghost Adventures kick, we stayed in Vegas for a couple of days and then drove out into the desert toward Pioche, Nevada. The Ghost Adventures Crew had done a paranormal hunt there at the Overland Hotel that is notoriously haunted (rooms 10 and 14, specifically).
I remember the drive being a nice clear day and the type of desert started to shift a little from what we’re all used to so there was some cool scenery. Now, we were on this trip in like April so I packed for desert weather in April, but what they failed to mention to me was that Pioche was in the HIGH desert, which didn’t really mean anything to me until we made it around a ridge and saw fucking snow!
We pulled over and played in it a little bit and then finished the drive and, lo and behold, it got more snowy. So when we finally arrived in Pioche I had to walk my happy ass through snow in leggings and sandals and a tank top with only a light jacket. And the next day, I only had shorts or a different pair of equally as thin leggings! It was terrible, but in a funny way.
The town of Pioche is fucking TINY! The population is literally barely over 1,000 and even when we were there we couldn’t figure out how it even held that many people! So we checked into the hotel and managed to get room 10 (one of the most haunted ones) and walked around. It was an old mining town so we checked out the remains of the tram, we went down to the Boothill Cemetery that had wicked old graves that were like, really old western graves of people who’d died in like the early 1800′s in saloon shootouts.
We had food at the only diner in town and while we were walking up a truck drove by goin’ extra slow. The driver was a good ole country boy- he was super hot- and in the back of his truck bed were…. idk, 15 or so fucking BEAGLE PUPPIES! I fell in love, I legit chased his truck down the street lol. It was like, the most amazing thing I’d ever seen.
So we hung out in the tiny place and when night fell we went downstairs to the bar at the hotel and hung out. We talked to one of the hotel staff who actually appeared in the episode of Ghost Adventures and we talked about the guys on the show and she was just really down to earth and funny.
Then, I got shitfaced.
I remember sitting at the high table watching my dad play pool with some locals while my sister was talking to some guy who’d also been on the show (and was a regular at the bar). At that point, I was really drunk and really lovey, so I decided to drunk dial everyone I knew to tell them I love them. Only, I didn’t get reception in the hotel, so I walked my happy ass out into the freezing night, and kept walking almost two blocks down to a little bench outside of the run down fire station and sat outside for over an hour, in the snow, in leggings and sandals, calling everyone I knew to tell them how much I loved them.
My sister finally came looking for me and dragged me back to the hotel while I was still on the phone, and I was able to make one more call to a friend. Drunk!me thought it would be a GREAT idea to finally confess that I had a crush on him and wanted to make out, so I told him that, and when he asked ‘uh, what?’, my dumb ass said it again, clearer and louder so he wouldn’t miss it!
Before he could respond my sister figured out what I’d just said and snatched my phone away and hung up. We went back inside to get my dad and then we walked up the street to the other bar in town and while we were walking my dad started throwing snowballs at us, so I fuckin’ took off. In my entire life I’ve never run as fast as I did that night lol. I ran so fast that  only stopped after my drunk brain could register the flash of neon I’d passed. So I turned around and was a few buildings away from the bar and when I looked for my sister and dad, they were still at the other end of the street a good 2 football fields away!
We went in and played shuffleboard and hung out. They paid the bartender not to give me anymore drinks and I then crawled on the bar and tried to convince him to give me more lol. I ended up going to the bathroom and the signs didn’t say ‘men’ and ‘women’, they said ‘John’ and ‘Mary’ and I freaked out because, Supernatural, duh!
When we left the bar later that night, with me even more drunk than before, my dad started throwing snowballs again and we ran down the street. There was a kind of boardwalk that we were running on and we didn’t realize it ended with a staircase so I jumped into the road and ran down the asphalt but my sister ended up, in a full sprint, leaping off the end of the boardwalk and crashing into me. She was so graceful and when she was in the air it was like she was  in slow motion. So when she landed we were howling with laughter and then we rounded the building and there was a big ass dog right in our faces! I freaked out just because I was shocked but it ended up being friendly and sauntered off, but drunk me was already laughing at my sister’s majestic leap so I started laughing even harder that I’d gotten so scared.
I ended up peeing my pants and we went back into the hotel and I tripped going up the stairs, resulting in more laughter and more pants peeing. We finally got to the room and I changed and we went to sleep. The room (and hotel, itself) were pretty creepy, and because we knew it was haunted I was already on high alert. They went to sleep but when I tried to, and every time I closed my eyes, I could feel someone standing at the side of the bed staring at me. I kept smelling and feeling little gusts of wind in my face, as if someone was sitting by the bed staring me down and was smoking a cigarette/cigar and blowing the smoke in my face. It was incredibly unnerving because it didn’t stop not once all night, so I ended up staying up all night watching tv, hoping I didn’t see anything or feel anything else.
The next day when I showered I couldn’t shower fast enough because it felt like someone was watching me shower and we thanked the hotel staff and left. I slept on the drive home and at one point when I woke up my sister asked if I’d heard from my friend. I said no and was really confused and then she asked if I remembered calling anyone last night and then it all struck me and I was mortified the rest of the ride home. When I got home I decided to just be straight up so I texted him saying that I’d meant what I said and was open to either going that route, if he was also interested in me, or just staying friends. He ended up ignoring me for weeks and I had to talk to a mutual friend about it. Now it’s just water under the bridge, but a hilarious memory. I even wrote a fanfic about the whole trip to Pioche! (I think some of the details in the fic are wrong/exagerated, and I’m not totally clear on some of the details that I’ve recounted here as they differ from the details at the end of that fic, but it’s all as accurate as I can remember without asking my sister for more clarification.)
All in all every part of the trip was just FUN. We didn’t ever have a moment where things went wrong, we didn’t have bad experiences. We weren’t stressed. It was exactly what my soul needed after spending years watching my mom battle with cancer. It was a bonding retreat and everything about it just soothed me and filled me with so much joy and the memories I have of that trip will last a lifetime.

They Was Coronas
so uh my second semester of college got cut a little short. I get why, but I’m still sad, yknow? Obviously, I get why social distancing is fully necessary and everything I’m about to say comes from an incredibly privileged position and I know this.
I’m upset that my first year of college has been disrupted by a virus just as I was settling in. I moved into my new house only a month before having to leave all my neighbors and new friends. I had just gotten to the point where I could casually text someone to meet for dinner or go over and hang out in someone’s room.
I just got elected to the Social Chair position in my org, and I had so many fun events planned like scavenger hunts and movie nights and fanfic readings. Newsies, the musical we were doing, got cancelled. First the college restricted events to less than 50 people and we didn’t know how we were gonna do the show since our cast, pit, and crew is already over 50, nevermind an audience. But then it was cancelled altogether and we were heartbroken. I mean, we were only a few weeks out from opening night. At our last rehearsal, we did our first full run of the show with a full cast and recorded it as if it were a performance, so at least the show got to live on in that way.
A part of the show goes:
“A mother? I was gonna get me one of those.”
“What he do with the one he had?”
“He traded her for a box of cigars.”
“Hey! They was Coronas.”
On that line, we all looked dead into the camera.
The energy that night was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. It was just us in the room and we knew at its core we were doing this for us and only us. No audience. We were performing for ourselves and all of the people who put so much time and love into this show and it was a truly beautiful thing. Afterwards, we said goodbye to the seniors and did a speedrun of all the org traditions as we realized this would be the last time we were all together.
We found out we were being sent home for the rest of the semester on a Tuesday afternoon at 1:17pm. I was sitting in Musical Theatre History and I got to watch as two dozen theatre kids realized all of their shows for the year got cancelled in one email. Some people left the room crying. Some people sat there in shock. I just remember thinking this cant be real. No one thought it would come to this.
The rest of the day was just a confused daze. We gathered in people’s rooms to cry together as we realized we wouldn’t get to see the seniors again. I passed groups of friends just hugging and talking in hushed tones on the paths around campus. My professors all looked bewildered and offered kind words as students frantically tried to figure out where they could go.
Not everyone could return home. A huge portion of our study body is international, with many hailing from China. Hell, my next door neighbor is from China and she didn’t know where she was going to live for the next six months because she couldn’t go home to her family in China, California, or New York.
The day after we got the email, I was supposed to fly home to have surgery and I had no idea how I was going to pack in that time much less entirely move out of my room for the year. Luckily we were able to suspend my flight and my mom was able to come drive up and help me pack, but I realize that isn’t an option for most people.
The seniors at my school held a graduation ceremony for themselves that made the Washington Post. I went with my friend and it was awe-inspiring and reassured me that I picked the right school.
The energy on campus after that email went out was chaotic as everyone tried to cram in three months of partying, senior events, and other stuff into a week. I got home from class to find five seniors shotgunning beers on the front porch of the house because it was on someone’s senior bucket list and they’d never done it before. I went to a party in the basement of an academic building. Hell, I may or may not have consumed a little alcohol and weed. And if you know me, you know I am not a partier nor do I ever do either of those things. But fuck it, it felt (and still feels) like we were living on the edge of the world. What were they gonna do? Kick us off campus?
I speedran all of my goodbyes to friends and seniors and god it was heartbreaking. I know I’ll get to see some of them next year, but still. It hurt to get ripped away from this life I had built for myself.
We’re transfering to online classes for the rest of the semester. I’ll keep you guys posted. Stay safe, stay healthy, be kind yourself and others. Wash your hands.

(part 19 of ?; first; previous; next)
“Careful!”
Andrac, a massively-built young man with a great bushy beard, caught Katherine as her foot slipped; the rocks up here were ice-covered and slick in places, and even where they weren’t, it was hard to find a good footing. The last time Katherine had done any real hiking was years ago, in northern Italy, and there it had at least been sunny and warm. But Andrac and Eadwig had promised her dragons; how could she pass that up? More importantly, they had promised a way to maybe get her augs working again, or at least figure out what was wrong with them.
They were six days from the High Settlement, although between the treacherous terrain of the mountains and the darkness, it was probably not so far as it felt. Not long after Katherine and Ælfric had returned from the shipwreck on the coast, a party of scavengers had come back from a trek over the mountains; they had been visiting the ruins on the coast, far away down in Oates Land--the Hills of Broken Houses, to the Dry Valleys People--where they got most of their high-strength metal, the stuff that made for the best knives and chisels. A landslide had forced them to take a new route over the Transantarctic Mountains, and in the crossing they had found that rarest and most valuable thing of all: dragons.
Dragons? Katherine had asked. Dragons, the scavengers confirmed. Eadwig, Andrac’s brother, had nodded knowingly. Katherine demanded an explanation. Long ago, Eadwig had said, not long after the People had built their first houses in the Valleys, strange ships came to the coast. Great ships, that could be seen for miles off; they let smoke into the sky, and many men came ashore. They brought with them great machine-bones, which they assembled into hulking beasts; and they set those beasts loose on the glaciers, hunting for iron and gold and other treasures. At first they roamed the coast and the hills only; and then as time went on, they ranged further inland, and deeper into the mountains, high into Victoria Land. They sniffed out wealth in the ground and burrowed into it, digging it up for the men-from-the-ships; but they soon became a terrible danger to the People. The beasts were made to roam a land considered uninhabitable, devoid of people. Hunters who strayed into their path were easily killed. On more than one occasion, their path threatened to take them through the Valleys, potentially razing any settlement they came across. Only with great effort, and the loss of many lives, could they be crippled or destroyed, and such a catastrophe averted. You know. Dragons.
Over the centuries, many of these old beasts slowed, then ceased to move altogether. There were sometimes rumors, hunters who saw what looked like one of them moving far off in the distance. But they were considered much less of a threat now. More importantly, sometimes you could salvage things off their corpses you could find nowhere else: they were resilient, made to last decades on their own, made to repair themselves and stay in touch with the ships off the coast; some of the sharpest weapons and most useful machines the People possessed had been cobbled together from the bodies of these ancient beasts. Andrac and Eadwig got it into their heads to put together an expedition to the place the scavengers had described to them; they talked excitedly with Katherine and Leofe and the other villagers about it, and Katherine realized eventually that they wanted her to go with them.
At first, she laughed. “I don’t know anything about machines,” she said. “I’m no good to you.”
“No. You have to come,” Andrac said. He tapped his head. “For this.”
“You can tell me all about it when you get back. I look forward to hearing your tale.”
Andrac shook his head. “No, no. It’s not about the story.” This time he tapped the side of Katherine’s head. She made a face at him. “Thing in your head. The device. You want to fix it?”
“My augs? What does this have to do with my augs?”
“The dragons are old, but cunningly wrought. Many subtle devices. The old stories say, the men of the ships spoke to them with spells.”
Katherine was getting used to the metaphorical way the Dry Valleys People sometimes spoke. They used the language of poetry and magic for the technology of the outside world; it wasn’t that they were superstitious. Quite the opposite; but these were things largely outside their day-to-day experience, and so they used the words of things old and remote to them to describe them. Spells usually meant computers were involved somehow.
“They did not make the spells with their mind or hands,” Andrac added. “They used their heads. Like you.” He gestured at Katherine’s head again. Actually, the core aug systems were located in a little case at the base of her brain stem, in her neck; but close enough. She got the picture.
She was skeptical, but Andrac and Eadwig were insistent. There was a decent chance the main systems of the prospecting platforms could be reactivated; if so, there was a decent chance Katherine could run at least a basic diagnostic on her cybernetics. That was a chance it was too tempting to pass up, she decided. Hence, being in the mountains with Andrac, Eadwig, and a dozen other adventurous young men who wanted to see a dragon for themselves.
Katherine straightened up, found her footing, and kept going. She was near the middle of the pack; Eadwig was out ahead, scouting the way, and an extremely enthusiastic youth named Ceolred, who couldn’t have been a day over sixteen, was bringing up the rear. He was given the brightest lantern, so everyone in front of him could see where they were going; it cast a soft, warm light ahead of them.
“Hey! Almost there!” Eadwig’s shout bounced off the rocky slopes and slowly died in echoes; Katherine could just about make out his lantern-light on the top of the slope they were climbing. Already her lungs were burning and her chest felt like it was going to explode; the difficult footing wasn’t making things easier. She picked up the pace anyway. Better to get it over with. Andrac, beside her, was also breathing pretty heavily, which at least made her feel like she wasn’t the only one having no fun.
Before she’d left with the expedition, Katherine had had what was by far her most mysterious interaction with anybody here to date, including the ones from before she had any language in common with them. And strangest of all, it was with Leofe. She’d noticed after the trip with Ælfric that Leofe seemed to be avoiding her; at first, she thought she’d just been busy. Leofe’s usual role in the village was not taking in wayward strays like Katherine; it was helping her father keep track of the settlement’s stores, and to let the salvagers and hunters know what they needed the most when they went out on their expeditions. In the wintertime, she also seemed to have a side job teaching the little ones their numbers and letters. Katherine had peeked in the lessons, wondering how Leofe’s fairly harsh methods went over with the children, and to her surprise, had found that there were some parts of Leofe’s personality she did not know at all.
The schoolroom was one of the side-rooms of the settlement hall, one with lots of books and benches, and a big stack of writing-slates in the corner. Tapestries with colorful animal forms decorated the walls, and there was a big bright fire in the middle of the room that Leofe sat beside; surrounding her, on the benches and floors, was a gang of fifteen or twenty kids ranging from somewhere around six to ten years old; she was reading to them from a book in her lap, in a bright, clear voice, pausing often to answer their questions patiently, and at length. She looked, in fact, happier than Katherine ever saw her the rest of the time. And when she saw Katherine standing at the door, looking on, she didn’t seem embarrassed or self-conscious at all; she just nodded and smiled, and went back to reading.
Still, Katherine noticed, Leofe seemed suddenly to have no time for her. She was around much less at the evening meals, the ones everyone usually ate together in the hall. When Katherine did run into her, she was always hurrying off somewhere else; and Katherine soon got the impression she had done something to piss her off. She’d try to make small talk, and Leofe would answer curtly or not at all, before making her excuse to go; and when she tried to ask Leofric what was up with his sister, he only shrugged. “I ask myself that often,” was all he said. So that was no help.
Finally, the night before Andrac and Eadwig’s expedition set out, Leofe came up to Katherine after the evening meal.
“You’re going tomorrow with the others?” she asked.
“I am,” Katherine said.
“You shouldn’t.”
“They said they need me,” Katherine said. “I’d hate to disappoint.”
“They’re idiots. You shouldn’t go.”
Katherine was puzzled. Leofe definitely seemed annoyed at her, and she had no idea why.
“Why not? I can be helpful, and maybe I’ll get something out of it. Andrac seems to think I might be able to find something to help fix my augs.”
“Your augs are stupid, and you don’t need them,” Leofe said. “Going with Andrac is stupid. It’s dangerous, and you’ll probably die.”
Katherine was taken a little aback by this. “I don’t think it’s that dangerous. We’ll have a lot of experienced salvagers with it, and we won’t be more than seven or eight days out.”
“But you’re not a salvager. You’re not a mountain-climber. You’re not like us. And you’re even weaker than you are with your cybernetics. You should stay, and not get yourself or somebody else hurt.”
“I thought I didn’t need my augs?”
“You don’t, but you haven’t learned that lesson properly yet.”
Katherine thought about this for a second. Leofe was clearly not an indirect person by habit, but there was definitely something bothering her she wasn’t telling Katherine, and maybe that bluntness was rubbing off on her a little. Because she was not at all in the mood to play a guessing game about what it was.
“Leofe, what did I do to piss you off? Why are you so irritated with me?”
Leofe just shook her head. “I’m not irritated with you. I don’t care at all. Just giving you advice. You shouldn’t go. You’re not one of us, and you shouldn’t try to be.”
“What do you--” Katherine started to say; but Leofe just walked off.
Fucking hell, she thought. She tried not to let it bother her too much; but even after all this time in the Valleys, Leofe felt like one of her few real friends, and it would have been a lie to say it was not painful to find herself feeling very alone again.
The party crested the ridge a few minutes later; Eadwig pointed out their destination Katherine. Ahead, nestled between this ridgeline and the next, was a small glacier-filled valley; at the top, only a couple of hundred meters away, wedged into a crevasse in the ice and half-covered with rubble, was a hulking splayed-legged form, like a big tailless lizard. The dragon. Another limb seemed to stick out of the rubble further on; a second, perhaps lured in by the same ground scans as the second. Beonna, their most seasoned scavenger, seemed more interested in the deeply buried one; he seemed to think its components would be in better shape, despite the rockfall. At this point, though, Katherine mostly just wanted to rest.
They had to make their way down to the dragons even more slowly. The slope was mostly loose scree, and nobody wanted to go ass-over-elbows into the darkness below. It took almost an hour of careful, single-file descent, until they came to the place where the ice met the rock, and were able to follow that margin to the dragons themselves. After that it was a short break, only five minutes, and the others began setting up a camp and building a fire. Katherine, for her part, sat panting on a rock, still trying to catch her breath.
“No time to get too lazy,” Eadwig said with a smile as he passed by. “We have work to do soon!” Katherine just nodded and gave him a thumbs up. Maybe Leofe was right. Maybe she wasn’t as tough as the others. But they hadn’t brought her along for her toughness, so she didn’t feel too bad.
When the camp had been set up, they started crawling all over the dragon’s corpse, trying to see what sort of condition it was in. Once she was feeling a bit more human, Katherine got up and walked over to see what she could make of the thing.
“Dragon” was actually not a bad word for one of these mobile prospecting platforms. It was unbelievably huge, more than two hundred meters long, and indeed shaped like a mythological beast. Its main digging section resembled a pair of jaws, enclosing a great toothed wheel; here, they were crushed and splayed open by enormous boulders. Supporting pylons on its back stuck out above the rocks, and two of its big elephantine feet were stuck in the ice. The thing looked like it could eat mountains.
“Over here!” Beonna called. “Hey! Outlander! You too!”
Katherine followed his voice. She clambered up the metal flank of the platform, grasping for handholds, until she found an actual ladder; Beonna was standing with Andrac and a few others right on the beast’s spine, beneath one of the tall pylons. He pointed down at his feet. There was a hatch there; and next to it, a small control panel.
“You think you can talk to this?” Beonna said.
“I’m not a wizard, but I’ll give it a shot.” Katherine was trying to be funny, but Beonna just nodded seriously. She looked at the control panel. It had some big, colorful buttons on it, with abbreviations that didn’t mean anything to her; and a screen that was intact, but dead. There was a thin metal cover to the side that she could pop off; beneath that was an array of ports. Katherine would not say she had more than average knowledge of computers, and she knew nothing at all about autonomous mining machines, but she did recognize a basic BCI when she saw one. Nestled in among the ports was a long, thin, whiplike piece of plastic, with a sharp tip. A neural splice. She tugged at it gently; it extended with little resistance, just enough spring to draw itself back into the panel when it wasn’t in use.
“Well, here goes nothing,” she said to herself. She pulled back the hood of her cloak and yanked off one glove; then, feeling carefully with two fingers for the right spot, she took a deep breath, and jabbed the sharp end of the splice into the back of her neck.
It hurt like a bitch, of course, because she couldn’t deaden the area, and the cold seemed to make it even worse; but she’d aimed correctly despite the bad angle, and the splice seated itself neatly the first try. Good thing, too; she had not liked the idea of having to stab blindly into her spine on the back of a desolate glacier. Now to find out of this thing was still functional. She called up a few basic activation sequences, in order by how common they were. Three red squares. A big hollow blue triangle. Green thumbs up? Think, Kate. Old system. Basic BCI. One large, red circle.
The screen lit up, a solid white square.
“Yes!”
Katherine’s triumph was immediately cut off by a stabbing pain in her forehead.
“Fuck!”
She screamed loud enough that for a second she thought Beonna was going to fall off his perch; but it was all she could do not to curl up into a little ball and start crying right there. The pain ran down from her head and into her spine, and for a second, it felt like every nerve ending in her body was on fire. Then, just as suddenly as it had come, the pain almost entirely subsided, leaving behind a low-grade throbbing headache. A mishmash of symbols and technical jargon flashed in front of her eyes, then was replaced by a series of Critical warning! messages moving rapidly through her field of view.
“Are you all right?” Andrac asked.
Katherine smiled, then laughed, then clutched her head because laughing made her headache worse; then she laughed again anyway.
“I’m better than alright,” she said. “I’m back in action, baby.”
* * *
Whoever had built this machine had clearly foreseen the possibility of some lost soul relying on it in an emergency. Once the console was active, Katherine was able to work out how to pop the hatch, and they squeezed inside. The space was cramped--a little more than a short hallway, a small control cabin, and some lockers stocked with emergency supplies and rations that had long ago crumbled to dust. But there was an extremely basic aug maintenance kit in among the first aid supplies, and another neural splice that this time was at least out of the wind. Katherine found a bulky hard-copy manual labeled Your Neural Interface and You, with a cartoon brain on the front giving her a deeply unnerving thumbs up. From what she could piece together, the dragon--sorry, the LMK Autonomous Mining Platform Mk. 7--had been designed so somebody with a third gen or better neural lace could run diagnostics and do basic software maintenance. Katherine’s augs were built on what was probably a ninth or tenth generation lace, and by comparison to the crude interface third gens offered, were considerably more sophisticated, but, importantly, it still relied on a basic support layer that used the same instruction set as a third gen. Which meant she could use the platform’s built-in safety and recovery features, if not to try and fix her entire aug set, at least troubleshoot the support layer. And maybe help the scavengers out, too.
Unfortunately, she had to spend the first three hours sorting through error messages. The bulk was Fatal Error: See Medical Professional Immediately! spam that just meant her main augs were offline. Medical monitoring, cardiopulmonary maintenance, neurological maintenance and stimulus management, etc, etc.; nothing she hadn’t been living without for weeks or months by now. Once she dismissed all these messages, and switched off the processes that kept trying to reboot these augs, the worst of her headache, and the tingling feeling all over her body that occasionally got replaced with hot and cold flashes, subsided. She tried to access the cortical aug suite, the thing that would have helped her most when she was trying to learn the local language, but even trying to call them up in safe mode gave her a splitting headache and more stabbing pains all over her body. Okay, fine. She took them offline for good. Not going to try that again without a doctor standing over me, she thought.
Eventually, she had managed to shut down every single higher process in her cybernetics, leaving only the support layer, an interface layer, and the networking layer active. By the time she’d got to this point, everyone else was getting ready to tuck in for the night; Andrac offered Katherine a sleeping spot near the campfire, but Katherine declined. She didn’t want to risk having to start this process all over in the morning, so she curled up in the cramped little cabin of the mining platform, dug some chemical heating packs out of the supply locker, and did her best to doze with her brain still plugged into the machine. She slept pretty well, all things considered; though she did have unsettling dreams about being inside the belly of a monster.
In the morning, Andrac brought her some food, and she went back to work. By flipping back and forth through the manual she managed to piece together a series of commands to try to boot the platform’s main control system. All the peripheral systems were basically nonfunctional--which was just as well, what on earth would the DVP do with even a partially operational earthmover the size of a small freighter?--but the main control system had the diagnostic tools Katherine needed, and it also meant easier access to the interior of the machine. To Andrac’s delight, she was able to pop every hatch and secure panel at once; she also disabled the “autonomous threat response protocol,” just in case that was as dangerous as it sounded.
“The beast is yours,” Katherine announced. “Just don’t touch the power plant. I’m pretty sure it’s radioactive, and I need it to fix my augs anyway.” They did not need to be told twice. As the others in the party hacked and sawed and drilled away, Katherine turned her attention to a little brain surgery.
Okay, technically not surgery surgery. And technically not her brain--not the really important bits, anyway. But there was something undeniably primitive-feeling about trying to muck around with her cybernetics using a keyboard and text display, like she really was messing with the elemental components of her mind. She did in some sense think of her augs as part of her; one of her favorite parts, since they were relatively customizable. She had never made any conscious choice about her eye color or her height, for instance; but she had built up her personal aug set piece by piece over the years, like furnishing a living room. Or carefully curating a wardrobe.
Unless you were like the Dry Valleys People--hard baseline, that is--everybody these days relied on some degree of augmentation. But the ucytes, the stuff you got when you were a kid along with your immunizations and your retroviral therapy, they hardly warranted the term “cybernetics.” They were little more than artificially engineered white blood cells, boosting your immune system and protecting your metabolism and helping cuts and scrapes heal faster. Almost everybody, when they were a teenager, opted for one form or another of actual cyberization. You could program somebody’s ucytes to grow a neural lace within the space of a couple years, and then a doctor could implant what was basically a compact computer in the spine that connected to the lace. From there, more systems could be developed, more augs installed, depending on what you wanted or could afford. Some people liked to really self-modify--if you signed enough waivers and paid enough money, there were augs that could heavily modify emotions and brain function and senses, almost everything about your subjective experience of being human. Most people ended up like Katherine--five or six extremely useful aug suites they relied on in their day-to-day life, one or two more rarely useful ones, and some emergency and medical augs, which hopefully you never needed but which could save your life if disaster struck.
Only a neglectful or extremely paranoid parent would forego the ucyte injection for their child; Katherine’s parents were softly against more elaborate cyberization, but once she’d left home, she didn’t have to worry about their opinion. And they had not more than grumbled when she’d finally had the procedure done. More elaborate augs had never interested her, and she was counting herself very fortunate in that regard now. She was starting to realize how well and truly fucked her cybernetics were; if she had been too dependent on them, she might not have survived their breakdown.
The core problem seemed to be the neural lace. Katherine had suffered a blow to the head; the medical support system had done its job and prevented a concussion, but the fragile lace was damaged in the process, and couldn’t repair itself. The repair protocols for the lace were extremely limited by design--there were horror stories of early lace designs going haywire in lab animals--but damage to the lace meant most of her other augs simply couldn’t function properly. One or two, maybe, she could force, in a way that would probably void their warranty and put her at risk of seizures or worse, but she was not at all inclined to try. She could keep her cybernetics functioning at their most basic level, and maybe later try to jury-rig something crude using the default instruction set, something that would at least help her manage sensory input and metabolic function, but there was still the risk of something going wrong, of her having to perform some kind of maintenance she was deeply unqualified to attempt.
She sighed deeply. The only sane, responsible thing to do in this situation was to turn all her cybernetics off, in a more orderly fashion this time, and leave them off until she could get to an aug clinic or, preferably, a real hospital. The closest aug clinic was Port Alexander. The closest hospital with a cybernetics ward? That would depend on whether New Zealand or South America was technically closer. Katherine couldn’t remember. She was not, she knew, in the habit of always doing the sane and responsible thing. There was an argument to be made she would not be here at all if sane and responsible was her usual approach. But maybe it was time to give it a try. She entered the manual shutdown sequence; there was no tone this time. The text readout on the console just went blank. She pulled the neural splice out of her neck, and fished around in the supply locker for a band-aid; then she climbed to her feet and went outside to see if she could help take anything apart.
