I have a kind of specific question that I'm hoping you and your followers could help me out with.
I'm writing my own version of the classic marauders fic, but I suck at writing the death eaters I don't enjoy writing antagonistic characters particularly and don't even have a super clear idea of who is who/ who fits to include(besides perhaps the main ones like Snape and regulus) especially since there's so little canon, so the majority is often fan made. of course they are essential to the plot though!
I want it to obviously be my own work, but I would really appreciate any pointers of where to start with these characters, even just a list of the right characters to start developing my own interpretations of.
this is obviously a very big ask, so any help or pointers anyone can offer to give me a nudge in the right direction I'd be so grateful for!
Hello! Sorry for the late reply, I had two exams and I have two more coming up but I've been dying to reply to this ask since you sent it :)
I'll preface this by saying that, much like you, I'm really not into these kind of characters and I don't enjoy writing them, nor do I have the skill to do so. I have only written one-shots and none of them had any Death Eaters in them; however, I do have a WIP (that I started almost one year ago and that I plan on finishing sometime this summer) that's going to be around 10k and it will most certainly feature those kind of characters, so this is actually really helpful for me too and it might help me get out of this funk since I haven't worked on that WIP in months.
That said, let's get to work!
The first name that comes to mind is Lucius Malfoy. We have quite a bit of info about him in canon, and I believe he's 6 or 7 years older than the Marauders. He was a prefect and was in the Slug Club, and was friends with Snape for the brief time they were at Hogwarts together. After leaving Hogwarts he married Narcissa Black, another pureblood, got a job at the ministry and at one point he met Voldemort. If you want to write him into your story, depending on the year your fic takes place, you could show him taking Snape under his wing and giving speeches about blood purity. I think by then he was already a prefect so he probably abused his power and gave detentions to Gryffindors and Muggleborns/Halfbloods for no reason; I don't know if he'd use violence or hexes, because he's far too diplomatic for that. I think he was really good at convincing people, he manipulated them and made them do the dirty work for him. He'd occasionally hex people for fun but due to his upbringing, he knew better than picking petty fights in the hallways, and he strikes me as the kind of person who was very driven and who thought about the bigger picture. He had, after all, a place in the wizarding world by right of birth, and his family was quite openly in favour of blood purity and all that racist bullshit. Snape, on the other hand, had always been picked on and he learnt at a very young age how to defend himself (and was easily triggered). Lucius didn't need to. He didn't have Snape's rage and didn't want revenge. If you want to start your story when the Marauders are a bit older (16 or 17), you could say that the wannabe Death Eaters at Hogwarts sort of idolised him because he was so young but already in Voldemort's inner circle; furthermore, you could have him actually recruit students, and have them take Unbreakable vows, teach them the Unforgivable Curses and make them get the Dark Mark. They could meet in Hogsmeade (since he's no longer a student), kinda like Harry does with his first DA meeting.
Barty Crouch Junior is another Death Eater that comes to mind and it could be an interesting character to work with. He was at Hogwarts during the 70s and roughly the same age as James & his friends. He came from a pureblood family, but I don't think they were the kind of people who actually wanted Muggleborns dead; after all, Crouch Senior was already a prominent figure in politics, and he was head of the DMLE (Department of Magical Law Enforcement). But he did have an aggressive approach towards criminals, which partly explains his son's obsession with violence. Barty Junior also had a very complicated relationship with his father, a man who was probably incapable of showing affection and was too busy working to take care of his son. I think Barty hated him but wanted to impress him at the same time and, in a very fucked up way, he did those horrible things because he wanted his father to pay attention to him. We don't know why he chose to become a DE, but my impression is that he was a very lonely, insecure kid and he found a sense of belonging at Hogwarts, something I don't think he ever felt when he was at home. Whether he joined the very people his father was after out of spite or not, it doesn't really matter. What matters is that he did believe in those things by the time he was older. He was also very intelligent - he disguised himself as Moody for nearly a year - albeit highly unpredictable. He was delirious and insane in some scenes, but overall quite reasonable when he pretended to be Moody, so he could have had a personality disorder, but if you want to write about that you should do some research and be careful, because associating villains with mental illnesses could do more harm than good if not done well, and it's a slippery slope. All I'm gonna say is that he definitely had some daddy issues, that's for sure.
Then of course we have Regulus, whose family was very much against Muggleborns. We know quite a lot about the Black household thanks to Sirius, and there are different headcanons floating around about the kind of bond the two brothers had. In my opinion, Regulus looked up to his brother and was envious of him: even at eleven years old, Sirius had already made up his mind about his parents' view of the world and wanted nothing to do with them. It shows that he was an independent thinker, and I think Regulus wondered for a long time how he could do that so easily. Was Regulus not strong enough? Or did he feel like he didn't have a choice? Because Sirius had James, so he wasn't completely alone. Regulus had no one. Obviously, I know he did have a choice, and he shared his parents' (and Voldemort's) political views. When Voldemort hurt Kreacher he turned against him, which is very interesting and unusual, mainly because pureblood families do not have any sort of respect or affection towards elves, while Regulus clearly did.
As for the others, I think Mulciber and Avery are mentioned by Lily while they were in Hogwarts, and they're the ones who cursed Mary Macdonald (this is mentioned in SWM). I think they went to Azkaban after the first war, unlike Evan Rosier (mentioned during Karkaroff's trial) who was killed when they tried to arrest him.
I suggest you also look into the Sacred Twenty-Eight - a list of pureblood families from which the Potters were excluded because they had been pro-muggle for a couple of generations, I think - to get an idea and maybe an inspiration for an original DE character.
So, if you want to include Death Eaters in your fic, you could make a list of possible characters and mention their relationships and friendships; you could make one of them really good at dueling, and another one good at flying (and make them James' rival during Quidditch matches). Death Eaters were Voldemort's followers first, and friends second, so it makes sense that there was a hierarchy: you can choose one of them as a leader, and the others could be the minions, the brawns and the brains (Snape would probably be the latter since he was smart and actually invented some hexes that were very useful to the DEs). And if you want to make things even more interesting, some of them could also be from different Hogwarts houses (not the ones I've mentioned because they're all canonically Slytherins), and they could also be girls!
If you want more ideas, there's a 2014 film called 'The Riot Club' (which I didn't like to be honest, but that's not the point lol) that explores the violent behaviour that often occurs in these kind of social circles; and while you're at it, you could also research 'hazing', a phenomenon that is often associated with fraternities and sororities in college that, while pretty disturbing, could also make for a much more compelling story.
Historically, boarding schools have often been described as toxic environments: for the majority of the year these young kids are separated from their families and while this is beneficial for some, for others it's very dangerous. During the most vulnerable period of their lives, they have to rely on authority figures that do not, however, provide the love and affection that parents do; this creates a dissonance, and kids either isolate themselves, or create their own 'families', and some are more dysfunctional than others (i.e. the Marauders vs. Snape's gang).
This is all I could think about, but as always people are welcome to add their own thoughts and headcanons!

marauders era unpopular opinions, once more
i really don’t like fanon regulus. i don’t like him being helpless and kind and a sirius variant. he’s morally grey, leaning towards morally dark, he’s selfish, he agreed to his parents’ and voldemort’s ideologies, having joined the death eaters most likely by his own will (unlike draco malfoy). but obviously, everyone is allowed to characterise characters the very way they want to
and while we’re on it, i don’t like evan and barty either, for the same reason. maybe i would, if they were realistically characterised (i LOVE reading morally grey or morally dark(er) characters), and once again, i believe that just because one likes a character, that doesn’t always mean that the character is a good person
and continuing on the same topic, the sunshine james potter, although being a topic that i like and delved deeper into myself, is nice, but i would also love to see more of arrogant, spoiled james potter, too
not liking severus snape and peter pettigrew but liking evan, barty and regulus is kind of hypocritical
i don’t like jegulus
i also don’t like the casanova, bad boy characterisation of remus, and the helpless, needy characterisation of sirius either. to me, they’re out of character, overly done and absolutely not enjoyable
and because i earlier mentioned severus snape, i think he’s an interesting character, actually. that doesn’t make him a good person (once again, i believe him to be morally grey, too) and i can’t call myself a lover of his, however i find his story and character very interesting and compelling
i don’t like a lot of the wolfstar dynamics in current fandom
“we need more content about the girls!” literally do it yourself. please. whenever i write content about the men, i get a wave of new followers, and whenever i post about the non-men, suddenly i have tebs of people unfollowing me. oh, and my posts about the men have twice or thrice the notes of the other ones

and speaking of which, sirius is such an interesting character, and he was reduced by many people to nothing, or whatever is relevant to the plot
james would pick sirius over regulus any time, with literally no hesitation
i don’t care about popular fics (read or don’t read, i generally don’t read popular fics to be honest), however i do care about the way creators, especially writers, are treated in this fandom. i made a few posts about this topic, feel free to ask me to link them to you, but the way some people feel entitled to fic and fandom content is horrible

Ok but we get harassed for tagging ships that are in the post too just because there’s other ones mentioned
The fandom is supposed to be fun! You guys support harassment and bullying over fiction! The problem that needs addressing is the people who harass not the people who tag! There’s a way to get people not to tag btw it’s tell them nicely! Not act horribly! Jily fans been sending jegulus writers hate & writing “if you wrote jily maybe you’d get treated better” the problem lies with the way jily fans act & people will start biting back because people can only take so much.
OK so I was looking at this for some minutes, truly dumbfounded. Because it's like no matter what we say we're not being heard.
Rant below for those who want to avoid it lol
"You guys support harassment and bullying over fiction!"
I'm ?????? Where in the world have either of us who have spoken up done that? When have we ever said anything other than "tag your posts properly"? Don't these two sentences have completely different meaning? Who are these people that are harassing? Because harassment is never ok and we have not encouraged that. But if you think that simply telling a person who used incorrect tags to remove the extra ones is harassment, I'll have to tell you that no, it is not, it is a very normal thing to do actually.
Yesterday there were a few posts about asking people to tag properly and in response we got that "Jily fans are horrible and inhumane, they harass and bully, they're the worst people ever" and actually got harassed in response. Do you think there's anything normal and fitting in what happened and in that reaction?
"Jily fans been sending jegulus writers hate & writing “if you wrote jily maybe you’d get treated better” this is actually wild because NONE OF US in our community have done that or WANT that, we want to stay as far away from all of that as possible. If you have some anon trolls going around in the community, that has nothing to do with us, most of us are grown people who have been fans since books came out and ain't nobody got time for that, I'm sure most of us don't even know who your writers are or their accounts. In fact, you can tell just by wording of that message that it's clearly a troublemaking troll and not a serious fan, no normal human talks like that.
As for fandom being fun, YES, it's supposed to be fun! But this is where my words about it not being a group project come in, because what's fun for you is not fun for us! In fact, it's the opposite of fun, we dislike it immensely, it upsets us and puts us in a bad mood and it doesn't even belong in our tag. So why should we be upset every single day, going into our tag that's supposed to be a place of comfort and fun, seeing things that are not supposed to be there, when people can simply --- tag properly according to Tumblr guidelines? And this is not new, we've been put through this for years now, and we've been asking politely over and over and over and nobody is listening, and now that we've gotten louder - in our own tag - suddenly we're the bad guys and harassers. When should it be enough? So this part of the ask "people will start biting back because people can only take so much" was incredibly ironic, because we've been taking it for YEARS and now we aren't even biting back, we're simply asking to tag and posting silly memes in our own space but are still getting vilified.
I will also address the first point because I think it causes a lot of general confusion about tagging:
"tagging ships that are in the post too just because there’s other ones mentioned"
A ship tag is for posts that have positive mentions of that ship.
If a post mentions multiple ships and is "X is great, Y is good, Jily is bad, I don't like it anymore" - this is not for Jily tag;
If a post has "Jily were together for 2 minutes, broke up and then *insert 3 paragraphs gushing over another ship that were true loves*" - this is not for Jily tag;
If a post has a poly ship that includes James and Lily - this is another ship, not Jily;
If a post is a huge fanfic dedicated to another ship with James or Lily and then has the last sentence about Jily basically settling together - this is not for Jily tag, though I see how there could be arguments about it;
There are many other instances too that I can't think of right away at this moment, but basically there's nuance here and just because Jily is brought up in a post doesn't make a post about Jily and the tag is for people who love the ship and want to celebrate their love, and the last thing they want to see there is completely unrelated posts with random Jily cameo in them that do not even portray them in a good way. This last topic is a bit of a complicated one with slippery edges, but I hope it was still comprehensible.

thanks for the tag, mary!!! ily. sorry this is late. a lot of these are pretty generic and self-explanatory so instead of elaborating i'm just gonna shamelessly link fics of mine that i think best show how i write about them, and hopefully, if/when you do read them, you'll see why i love them??? in no particular order:

I like that in your fic, you have the most canon compliant Remus dynamic with Jily and the rest of the marauders. In canon Sirius and Remus were the most distant marauders with both thinking the other was the traitor. In canon Remus was the marauder Lily had less relationship, considering Lily had a nickname for Peter(Wormy) in her letter to Sirius and doesn't mention Lupin. In a sense in the marauders Lupin was the most tag-along of them, more than Peter himself. But the main thing is that Lupin accepted that, but Peter didn't.
Remus is a very hard character to write and to write correctly. I know I struggle at times to write him because I want to bang my head against the wall. I was always waiting for Remus, in canon, to step up with Harry but he never did.
I think Remus has a hard time becoming close with people. Harry, himself, struggles as well so that’s why the two never hit it off. Remus wanted to be close, went as far to name Harry godfather of his kid, but the relationship just wasn’t there. I’m sure Harry thought he was named godfather solely because of Remus’ relationship with his dad.
I 100% think that James was the outgoing, normal kid who kept that group together. I think every one of them considered James their best friend but James only considered Sirius his best friend. Remus didn’t care about that. He had friends for once in his life and he finally belonged somewhere. When James and Sirius were off doing James and Sirius things, I think Remus and Peter got along very well. I definitely see the two of them close with each other.
But Sirius, in my mind, wasn’t that close with Remus and Peter. Sirius only cared about his relationship with James. He thought Remus was a spy, totally convinced himself of it. I think he only suggested Peter as SK because he was convinced Peter didn’t have the backbone to be a spy. He probably thought Peter would hide like a little mouse in his house and never come out. Sirius thought that’d be perfect.
Now, I’m sure the boys had fun together in school. I’m sure they appeared close to one another from the outside. I also think James probably didn’t see the cracks in all the relationships until the war really started amping up because his relationship with all three of them was great. But I could see Sirius annoying Remus. I could see Sirius being exasperated with Peter. I could see Sirius also being annoyed by Remus’ personality. But James kept them together. James kept them as close as they possibly could. Once they were all off out on their own, not forced together in school, those cracks became larger and larger.
This is why Wolfstar doesn’t work in my mind. I can’t wrap my head around it at all given the amount of distrust between them in the first war. I mean, Remus didn’t even think for a second something was fishy with Sirius being arrested. He just accepted it like “oh, that’s Sirius.” There was no love loss at all. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m fairly certain Sirius even calls Remus by his last name on occasion in canon. Which would even further prove they weren’t really that close at all. I think the only reason they embraced like brothers in the Shrieking Shack was because it was a highly emotional time. Sirius had suffered for so long, Remus had been alone for so long, that they sought comfort in each other. I like to think after that, Remus and Sirius were closer than they had ever been because James was dead and Peter was the spy. They had no one else but each other.
As for Lily, I think a lot of people probably write her as besties with Remus because a. We don’t know who her canon girl friends actually were (Ginny is a victim of this as well, often paired off as being besties with Colin, Neville, and Luna or, even worse, Hermione.) And b. James and Sirius are besties so it’s natural to make Lily and Remus besties - especially if you’re into Wolfstar. And finally c. Remus’ comments about Lily in the movies that was added but not in canon.
I get the appeal to make Lily and Remus close, especially when you consider the classic Remus character of being a bookworm and shy and just sipping his tea while munching on chocolate. He seems to fit with Lily who is a prefect so she’s probably studious and befriends people like Snape and is just a good person. But there’s no canon evidence that they were close. There’s only evidence that Sirius was close with her and that Lily had a cute nickname for Peter.
Not that I read any of it, but I’ve seen people online complaining about the new characterizations of both Remus and Sirius. Honestly, it just sounds annoying. All of Sirius’ characteristics are striped and given to either Remus or Regulus?? While Sirius is reduced to a pining idiot over Remus?? Really? Why??? It doesn’t make sense! We know enough about Sirius and Remus to know their characters fairly well. I just don’t get it. Why do people hate Sirius so much all of a sudden??

well, since dead to me hasn't ended yet (kidding kidding kidding kidding!!!)
lmao I really thought I was gonna have a hard time finding a fic with an unhappy ending but I evidently forgot who I am. I dunno how to choose between:
1. i don't even know where you end and i begin (500 words, canon prongsfoot....you get it)
2. Promises to Keep (1k words, dorlene with canon ending....you get it)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Okay listen, do I technically have a fic that mentions living happily ever after in the last line? Yes. Am I choosing that fic? No. I'm choosing Happy Holidays, You Filthy Potters, because 1. smut, 2. sassy young Harry, and best of all, 3. sassy good godfather sirius black 😉
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I've gotten a couple of comments about Lily in Dead To Me but I've decided it's not my problem if people don't have critical analysis skills 💀
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do! I write smut for a number of different ships and plan on doing others! Uhhh, what kind? the fact that I don't really know what that means probably means it's pretty vanilla 😆 there's a lot of going down on people 🤐
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Haha, no, but if I did I'd probably do PJO/HP
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge. that would be so heartbreaking.

No, but that's SO cool that people offer to do that for some fics!!!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have!! @charmsandtealeaves and I co-wrote a fic for a jilychallenge last year, before we were even friends! It was my first time co-writing a fic, which was very cool and different, but also didn't feel that foreign to me -- I think because I've spent a lot more years doing para RP than I have writing fics. It was fun to kind of riff off another writer in a different way. I would definitely do it again!
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Okay, this is kind of tough because I only recently got into Prongsfoot, and they are the definition of soulmates... But because I ultimately see Sirius as more of an ace/aro character, Jily wins the place of favorite ship in my heart. <3
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Well, I really only have two WIPs posted on AO3: Dead To Me and Just This Once, and I have all of DTM outlined and plan to finish it by fall. Just This Once might be a while, but I also have a plan for it and would like to finish it at some point... But I guess there's a chance I won't finish it -- I do have a lot of other multi-chaps I am going to be starting soon.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Hm. I like to think I'm good at getting into the minds of my characters, really thinking through their motivations and emotions and then expressing those to the reader. I also think I'm fairly good at dialogue. I really like writing banter so I hope others think I'm good at it, haha. And based on what I've been told, my smut isn't half bad 😆
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Oh, definitely writing descriptions of any kind. I never remember to describe the scene and when I do, I think it feels clunky. I'm not great at writing in a more direct way, either; I struggle to express a character's emotions without getting a bit flowery with it. Just generally, I think my writing could be tighter, you know? I'm sure I'll realize other things I need to work on as I write more long fics, too.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Ah, haven't done it yet, so don't have any thoughts to share.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
HP -- Jily on the Neopets forums... never 4get <3
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
If we're talking finished works, I'd have to say Tall Dark and Glasses, which I wrote for the masquerade event for Jilytober last year. To me, that fic has a certain je ne sais quois that is hard to replicate.
But unfinished? Dead To Me, hands down, and once it's finished it will be very hard to ever top it. It's imperfect and there are a lot of edits I'd make if I were to go back through and polish it up, but it's the first multi chap fic I've ever written, and beyond just feeling immensely proud of that, the story itself and how I'm writing it is one of the most heartfelt and meaningful things I'll ever write in my life.

This blog is like my therapy lol I really open it up and read it like morning newspaper every day!
I have to join the new Prongsfoot shippers discussion that's happening these days cause it's so timely. I'm a Jily shipper and all these years I was convinced that there was no problem between these camps, cause let me tell you, Jily shippers adore Sirius, like every single one of them loves him and treats his character well. For many of us he's actually the most favorite character in the books, we just aren't interested in exploring his romantic life. So I believed it was similar case the other way around, after all these 3 have canonically best bond and every variation of pairing makes sense and there's no need for bashing. But these last couple of months I ventured to some blogs and the things I saw some of the blogs say (and HUGE emphasis on SOME, because there were others who were lovely too) about Lily or Jily, and I don't even mean cheating hcs cause I haven't even encountered those, but I mean like meta and canon character analysis (arguably worse place to do this in than in fics) of Lily or Jily had me so "OH that's not-" and quickly backing away. It was in the realm of what Snape fans and shippers used to say about them. And honestly I was pretty taken aback and kinda hurt by this, cause as I mentioned Jily fandom never does this and loves Sirius, so it made me feel alone as a fandom and like, damn, everyone has a bone to pick with a woman, huh?

What’s so crazy is that not only did they say that we needed to have a discussion, but they intentionally tagged it so that people they know would disagree would see it. Like, what were you expecting? It seems like they just wanted an echo chamber that would agree with them. Saying you think there needs to be a discussion and then hiding replies/reblogs and blocking people who give any pushback is just… a little pathetic, NGL. It tells me that they don’t actually believe their argument and they know it’s flimsy, but they felt defensive because the original criticism was forcing them to confront some uncomfortable things about themself internally.
And the argument: “well, it’s not real!” Sure, but in order for that point to hold any weight, you have to demonstrate a clear awareness and understanding of the motives behind the content you create and the possibility of it being influenced by deep rooted or internalized issues/biases. We don’t live in a vacuum and it’s impossible for anyone to create content that isn’t in some way influenced by unconscious biases or things we’ve internalized from being socialized in a prejudiced society. But if you refuse to acknowledge the problem to begin with or become defensive at its mention, then how am I supposed to believe that you’re not challenging those issues in your daily life? I don’t police the content people make and I don’t automatically assume that creating content about controversial subject matter is the same thing as endorsing it. But again, becoming defensive and showing a lack of understanding when a discussion on said subject matter is being had, kiiiinda discredits you from being able to use the “it’s not real” excuse.
Btw, I don’t think you were rude. They were being purposefully inflammatory by posting it in the jily tag and condescendingly saying “you guys need to think about this”. I’m not sure why they were surprised by pushback, lol.
Well said, I don't think I can really add anything to this! Agreed they definitely don't believe what they're saying deep down and just feel uncomfortable about being forced to confront their behaviour. It's beyond painfully obvious that they didn't want discussion at all, they just wanted people to validate their Moral Righteousness about shipping sexy men together. Lmao. Did they really tag it and then say that jily fans needed to think about it? Ajfjgkkgbg that is wild
The "it's not real" was also wild considering that they were the one that compared people to neonazis for talking about fictional characters

Thanks for tagging me @theresthesnitch, I love seeing everyone's answers on this!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
40.
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
177,784. (A couple of thousand of those are actually by @eemolu, my partner in writing taller than the trees).
3. What fandoms do you write for?
These days, almost exclusively HP, though I've written a few little oneshots for Lois & Clark.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. The Great James Potter (167 kudos). Jily, canon, 7th year Lily POV "enemies"-to-lovers, 8.7k.
2. AO3 Is Down (149 kudos). Jily Muggle AU where they work for AO3. As cracky as it sounds. XD 1.4k.
3. As If By Magic (139 kudos). Jily, canon, 7th year slow burn, 34k.
4. Inescapable (138 kudos). Jily, soulmates, Hogwarts across the years, 4.2k.
5. Are You Experienced? (135 kudos). Hogwarts Jily go to a Muggle concert for their first date. 12.6k.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Absolutely!! Comments make my day and I always want people to know I appreciate them!!
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably Trapped - Emmeline Vance's last fight with the Death Eaters, told from her POV.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Are You Experienced? is definitely one of the fluffiest!
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I wouldn't say I've ever got full-blown hate, but I've got a few negative comments, most of them for writing Sirius/Lily. Stuff like 'Sirius would never do that to James' - even when it's a story where the Sirius/Lily part is fake dating and James is actually aware of it and endorsing it. xD The mind boggles.
9. Do you write smut. If so, what kind?
I write some smut, yes! M/F, mostly vanilla stuff. :p
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Not really! Though one day I want to finish that fic where Lily is a L&C fan. xD
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of! Who would be interested in stealing my fics? Lol. xD
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! My old Remadora story Over Spilt Coffee (FF.net link here - I should put it up on AO3) was translated to Russian, from my own Greek translation. And there was also a translation of Birthday in Spanish but the link doesn't seem to be working.
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
A couple! Apart from taller than the trees which I've already mentioned, I'd cowritten a fic for L&C with my friend Raquel.
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
JILY!!!
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
My old WIP Through Times Of War. It was my attempt to write Book 7 before DH came out. I still remember my plans for it, I had an ending and everything, but I'm just not interested in that era anymore.
16. What are your writing strengths?
A good grasp of grammar, vocabulary, flow - the technical aspects. My writing always looks very polished.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Coming up with a good plot/what happens next.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I've done it once - had Fleur and her family fight in French about Bill, in listening range of the Weasleys. I think that, if you're going to write dialogue in another language for a fic, it has to serve a narrative purpose. I don't like it when characters speak in another language or drop random words/endearments just to show off the writer's headcanons about where they're from.
19. First Fandom you wrote for?
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
Depends on your definition of favourite, but the one I'm proudest of is probably Are You Experienced?

you've said before that you don't want to try converting theogony into a published book, would you mind explaining why? just curious! thanks :)
I mean — sure! the short answer is that it was written to be a fic, and I don’t think it’s up to snuff to be published at all. I mean I don’t think I write at publishing level in general but that’s another discussion lmao (and I don’t say that to be self critical it’s just true! I am a hobby writer who writes hobbily! I don't really spend as much time honing my writing!)

to elaborate on that, though: I think, personally, that there’s an inherent tension between what a good fic and what a good traditionally published novel are supposed to accomplish. fic is supposed to harken back — in however abstract a manner the writer chooses — to a canon concept or subject. if your main characters are unrecognizable (read: your own intellectual property), then it’s probably not great fic. there is a point of reference for creating the characters and setting that puts constraints on the ability to be original.
there’s also so much shorthand that goes into writing fic that could potentially leave narrative and world-building gaps in an original novel. and this is absolutely rampant in theogony lol. for instance, I make very passive mention to Petunia and Lily’s strained relationship, and it ends up being a significant factor in Lily’s final decision in the story, but I don’t take time to dissect exactly what happened, because I don’t need to. everyone who reads Jily generally has their own conceptualization of how Petunia and Lily’s relationship fell apart. I can just mention Petunia and/or Vernon and it evokes a relatively universal emotional reaction from the reader.
I think even intrinsically with James and Lily, I tend to be very liberal with how romantic they are with each other in my stories. even when they’re not together, I tend to make mention of one when writing the other. part of that is of course for fun of seeing people react to it, but part of it is also because (I tend to think) so much of fic consumption is predicated on not seeing them as individual characters, so much as a couple who the writer has temporarily split apart for the purpose of getting them back together. like, that’s the big emotional payoff of romance / couple-centric fic. there’s less narrative tension because we know in the end (or we should, if it’s tagged correctly lol) generally how the romance shapes up.
I think that also creates situations (for better or worse) where we as readers make excuses for our favorite characters because we come into the story already cherishing them, already knowing that they ‘get the girl’ so to speak. like I think it's very typical fic consumption behavior to give a pass to a character's bad behavior where you wouldn't in a published book because you've spent hours upon hours reading about how they're the most special perfect little blorbo of all time.
so, yeah! there’s the long, long answer haha.
now, to be ABSOLUTELY AND COMPLETELY CLEAR: this does not apply to all fic!! some people write fic like it’s an original work and that is great!! some people are much better at avoiding shorthand and fleshing all of their characters out and I applaud them!!! and I am absolutely not saying that you can’t successfully convert a fic to a published book. that’s not what’s happening here. I just personally probably would avoid it FOR MY OWN STORIES because of the reasons listed above. I know a lot of people have done it before, quite well, and will continue to — and to that I say, hoorah! that is awesome!! this is all my own self-reflection.

Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) — Angst, Rated M, 14k
The summer after fifth year is no one’s favorite summer.
Sirius Black is ostracized from his friends, suffocating under the thumb of his parents and lashing out however he can.
Lily Evans is grappling with the fallout of her friendship with Severus Snape, not to mention dealing with Petunia’s insistence of cutting Lily out of her life.
James Potter is feeling the sting of betrayal and wrestling with what it means to forgive, while learning to take accountability himself.
A chance encounter might be the key to turning the tides for everyone.
My heart, my soul, my baby. This was the idea that got me writing again. It took me a while to sort it out and actually write the damn thing, but man.....this one has such a special place in my heart for me.
2. A Thrill Divine, Down My Spine — Fluff, Rated T, 2.5K
“Oh shove it, Potter. I’m just saying. You’re like…a really nice glass of Ogden’s Old,” she says, eyeing a bottle of the spirit and signaling to the barkeep.
A little lost for words, James stares at her. “How strong was that drink?”
“You know what I'm getting at — like a really good thing personified. Take a compliment Potter, God.” She turns on her stool to face him, sliding one of the firewhiskeys his way.
Or: Two totally platonic friends get drinks after a rough day.
This one came out of nowhere but I'm so pleased with how it turned out!
3. restless waves rise and fall — Pirate AU, Rated T, 37k (WIP)
In efficiency and general seafaring know-how, First Mate Evans makes up for what Captain Potter lacks.
So she has to make up for a lot.
Or: In which James Potter is a gentleman pirate and Lily Evans is his loyal but vastly more competent First Mate.
Originally thought up as a one-shot for Jily Week, this Pirate AU really took on a life of its own. This is my first multichap fic and I'm posting the last chapter next week and when I tell you Captain Potter and First Mate Evans have me by the THROAT I'm not joking. I love these two so gd much I'm going to miss them 😭
4. no, i could never give you peace — Angst, Rated M, 4.5K
James blinks. “Are you breaking up with me, Evans?” he jokes softly, resting his hand on hers. It’s a joke, but her body tenses and it immediately puts him on edge. The silence that follows is excruciating.
“I’m not doing anything.” Her nails begin to tap on the mug again—a nervous habit that James spots immediately. “I just think we should have a conversation.”
This was my first fic to publish when I got back to writing last year, and I'm still so, so pleased with it.
5. Echoes of a Love Lived — Microfic Collection, Rated T, 14.5 K
A collection of unconnected ficlets for Jilytober 2022 based on the 31 @jilytoberfest prompts.
I had so much fun challenging myself for this collection, and I loved being able to switch between angst and fluff at the drop of a hat.
