In the cards
Tumblr media
So,I originally wrote this for the Bittersweet challenge for @jilytoberfest where, and I got to turn an angsty quote into a sweet one. “You have given me so much pain.” has inspired this cracktacular piece of fiction. It did get yoinked at some point, but I will reupload for your consideration this @jilymicrofics (807 words) Enjoy!
Game night was always a big thing with the Potters. It was the one night a week when no one was allowed to make other plans. They took turns picking and bringing games, ordered food and poured generously from whatever alcohol was being served that night. It was cosy. Something to look forward to during the week. This was one of those weeks that James really looked forward to a night of friendly competition and hours of conversation.
Depending on whose turn it was to pick the game, the night turned out differently. James favoured co-op games, working together to get to the goal. Sirius, on the other hand, liked trivia games, things that he knew he would excel at. Peter preferred the silly sort of game, something active and guaranteed to give you the giggles. Remus always seemed to find amazing niche games with complicated plots and mysteries. Rich in storytelling and creative solutions.
And then there was Lily. Lily had a way of finding the most competitive, aggravating, friendship-ending games. Which had all started with Monopoly, a game that was now banned from the table. As a direct result of a gruelling, no-prisoners game that lasted seven hours before they collectively gave up. Which launched a series of game nights that only a masochist would enjoy. So clearly, all of them had the time of their life.
Other games brought by the redhead and subsequently banned were: Sorry, Settlers of Catan, Scrabble and for unrelated reasons charades. Which they mutually agreed was better kept for when they were forced to stay family-friendly. It did not always go wrong though. There had been a few fine games and one that everyone seemed to enjoy a lot more, despite multiple squabbles and disagreements. Risk, which was added to the permanent rotation.
Tonight was Lily’s turn and everyone was equal parts excited and apprehensive. Hoping she would finally fail in her streak of finding the worst games. So, when James got him and saw the pack of cards sitting on the table in the living room. He was relieved. Cards were usually fine. They had several card games they rotated. But this was Lily they were talking about.
For a moment James inspected the package, it looked innocent enough. Pretty straightforward too. But this was Lily. He was sure that there was some chaos involved, but he really could not see too much pain in a card game called UNO. Little did he know just how wrong he would be.
The first few rounds were rather tame. While the rules were simple, everyone seemed to hold back a little. Testing the waters. Not wanting to get into too much trouble until after dinner. Much to Remus’s dismay, Chinese food arrived. Halting the round for everyone to eat their fill and crack open another bottle of wine.
What happened next was the most unfortunate set of circumstances James could have ever imagined. He was riding high with only two cards left in his hand, the colour in his favour and he even had a mythical plus four cards ready to mess with Remus on his right. But right before the round could get to him Sirius threw down a skip card, moving his turn to Remus instead. Which was disappointing, but he could do another round.
Or not. Luck seemed to be smiling down on him when Remus reversed the turn order. That is where it all went wrong for him. Emboldened by his stroke of luck, he threw down the plus four proudly announcing: “Uno!” He smirked along the table when he caught the glint in Lily’s eye. And as if in slow motion he watched Sirius place a plus two on the board. Watching Lily doubt what card she should be putting down, made him nervous. For good reason too. Watching her place down another plus four.
Peter added a plus two, deciding on the colour red. His lucky colour. Which did not let him down when Remus was merciful, playing a reverse card. Seemingly saving him from his fate. The rollercoaster continues with Lily putting on a third plus four. It was now all up to Sirius, who paused just long enough for James to remark: “You have given me so much pain already. Just do it.”
Deflating when his friend placed down another plus two. Making the total cards he was drawing sixteen. Enough cards to force them to reshuffle the pile just so he could draw more. Muttering, much to everyone’s entertainment. “Lils picked this game alright.” Feeling hands on his shoulders from all sides. Consoling what would be a devastating loss on his part. Something only mildly mediated by Lily saying “Don’t worry love, I will make it up to you when everyone leaves.” Her wink made him feel only a little better.

The first bloke Lily meets at the speed dating event is too cold and distant; the second one lacks enthusiasm; the third one doesn’t look like the type to take initiative. The fourth bloke is when she stops counting.

Hi friends,
I wanted to let you know that with each story submitted into this fest, it really helped me. I’ve been going through depression for at least eight years, and I will go on Tumblr to read stories or two follow many crazy people out there. I once almost given up on writing in general, because people would say that there was no point in writing it wouldn’t get you anywhere, and all that bull crap that I was being told however, I never stopped writing. I simply just stopped publishing stories because of this, but I am slowly going back into it all because of this fest.
When I saw Jilytober fest, I simply fell in love with everyone’s writing. I haven’t read all of them but the few ones that I have I am left astounded by the amount of talent that each person has. I love seeing how people interpret each prompt just knowing that they got an idea from something so minuscule is brilliant .
I truly can’t thank you all because there’s times where I just thought it’s not worth going on but I’m happy to have something to look forward in, seeing everyone’s coming together, and writing, or drawing or two characters of a series is amazing. I truly don’t know what to say. At this point, only that each and everyone of you have helped me through a seriously difficult time in my life.
I hope you all know how important you are, and that you leave a lasting impact on me forever. Not just that, but also the fact that all of you have such talent that it warms my heart knowing you all put your work out there and written whatever’s small or a multi fic, like a very long masquerade, that I still have to read, just know that the first three lines had me absolutely captivated.
I truly love how this fandom is so supportive of one another, that it makes me feel warm being able to be a part of this community. If I’m honest, I was so close and taken down all my stories, that I’ve written for a pairing in the HP series because I was at a low point in life. But I’m glad that I didn’t press the delete button because you all helped me see how writing helps.
Seriously from the bottom of my heart thank you to each and everyone of you. And thank you for the people that helped make this fest happen because without you, there wouldn’t be a fest in the first place
❤️
This makes me so so so happy and content. Words fail to express how thankful I am for this. The fact that you took the time to write all of this… makes me so grateful. I’m glad got to play a role in you being happy! It’s because of people like you in this fandom that I love to organise this! There’s so much more that I’m feeling as I’m reading this but words are failing me 😖😖. Just know that you’re cherished in this jily community! We love you
Thank you for writing this, truly!

Written for the @jilytoberfest prompt 31: "An Alternative ending for 31 October, 1981." This is also a @jilymicro-oops using the prompt words: Blip, Flip, Clip, Rip, and Trip.
Oh...also...this is definitely a sneaky prequel to Kindly Stopped for Me, but it can easily be read independently of that fic!
Summary: On 31 October, 1981, James faces his worst fear, Lily does the impossible, and one friend is left to pick up the pieces.

Alternate Ending of 31 October, 1981
@jilytoberfest I wanted to at least write the last prompt of the 31 days of Jily ( Hopefully I can finish the others, even though the month will be over)
Please read below or over on A03 word count= 1,178 (and counting...)
31 October, 1981
Late night Visitor
Darkness surrounded the house almost as if death was going to knock at the door of Godric’s Hollow, the sky above quickly became a ghastly gray as the cloaked figure stood in front of the home, his red eyes a deep contrast to the darkness around him. His overly dry and thin lips, formed a sneer on his face, his yellow teeth almost glowing in the night. As he imagines all the possible ways, he could make the occupants from the home suffer before he disposes of each and every one of them. He wants to prove to all the Wizarding World that no one will defy Lord Voldemort. Pathetic fools, all wrapped up in their own world, with no clue of how easily he could take away everything with just a simple flick on a wand.
Soon they will know that there’s consequences for their actions. A few minutes tick by, before he decides to make his way down the path up towards the door. When he reaches it, he lifts up a thinly pale hand, and proceeds to claw at the door so hard that streaks of his blood trail behind. With one last sneer at the bloody mark that he left on the door, he slips out his wand and prepares himself.
It’s time.
He will be the only one to leave this pathetic excuse of a home. When that happens, he will once and for all have the complete power to do as he pleases, and to dispose of the weak minded all throughout the Wizarding World and eradicate any filth that has the audacity to use a wand. The darkness will rise and forever cast a shadow all over, as his reign of terror reaches new heights for all who dare defy him.
It’s time to finish what he came here to do.
Eliminate. Them. All.
To bring purity back into the Wizarding World, once and for all.
Not wanting to waste another second, Lord Voldemort flicks his wand straight at the center of the door, blasting it straight away and straight across the room. He laughs at the fearful shouts of that blood traitor James Potter, calling out to that filthy Mudblood of his, “Lily, take him and go-”
What a fool. There’s nowhere to hide, nowhere to run… Why couldn’t they understand that no one defies, Lord Voldemort!
Moments Before the Chaos
The house was filled with music and the beautiful giggles of a sweet boy, whose eyes could rival the color of a freshly pickled toad. Nothing could take Lily away from this precious moment between her and her child. Not even the foul smell of burnt food that wafted from the kitchen, a result of her husband’s lack of culinary skill, was strong enough to take her gaze away from her baby.
“Umm, Lils… I hope you don’t mind that dinner is a little bit overcooked,” she heard her husband call out from the kitchen. Shaking her head, “it’s all right love, no worries,” she replied with a chuckle, before adding, "I thought, you said, that you were a master at cooking a savory curry?” Lily said in a mock whisper, while making a goofy face at her little one.
“Oi! I heard that!”
“Good, that means you have great hearing,” Lily chuckled, as she rolled her eyes before turning her attention back at her little one.
“Oh sweetie, I love you so much.’ Lily smiled before caressing his little chubby cheeks. The warmth in the home felt almost surreal, since the past few days have all been the same. So gloomy and dark, that it's hard to distinguish night from day, as it all seemed the same.
Even though the outside was dark, Lily was hopeful that the war will soon end, and then she will be able to take her little baby out to the park and stroll with her husband by her side. There’s absolutely nothing in this world that she wants more than being with them, being able to love freely out in the open without fear of being targeted because of who they are. There’s still a chance to win this war, she knows it. There’s not a dolphin, her mind that the world will be a much safer place, she will not let anything happen to her family.
Lily thought for a second, she looked into those deep green eyes. She runs fingers through the soft black hair, laughing at how it stands up in an odd angle. “We might have to get some Sleekeazy’s, for that hair of yours,” she said before kissing trying to give him a little kiss on the cheek, which was a failed attempt since he kept wiggling and giggling at her.
“Might, want to try some on your-”
Before she could hear what James was going to say, they were interrupted by a loud banging. She turned quickly and saw that the door blasted off at the hinges and flew straight across the room. She heard a loud banging sound as the door slammed straight into the wall, leaving, keeping hole in its wake.
“Lily, take our son and go! He’s here! Go! Run! I’ll hold him off!” James, and shouted with such rawness in his voice, that Lily almost didn’t recognize him. Trying to calm the cries from the baby in her arms, as she tries to hold back her tears as she runs towards the hidden room, before entering, she looked over her shoulder, and saw the cloaked figure enter her home.
How could this happen? How could Peter betray them like this, and how could they be so foolish as to not see the signs of him joining the death eaters? She thought to herself, I should try to calm down, while trying to shake with fear that was coursing through her body, lipid her lip, not caring that she drew blood. The loud firing of spells that could be heard throughout the house, then suddenly it was quiet.
She tried to stay calm she remained seated on the floor, in the hidden room. The tears slowly slipped down her cheeks as her heart ached, as she heard a piercing scream of, “Avada Kedavra!” It shook her to the core as her biggest fear became a reality, she had lost the one that she had ever loved.
“No…no,” she whispered, as tears began to pour down her face, as she imagined the man she loves, lifeless on the cold hard floor. The sound of heavy footsteps drew near, she brought up her wand and pointed straight the killing curse on the tip of your tongue as she waited with bated breath as spells from the hidden room were slowly being removed.
The door slowly opened, the bright light of the whole, showing through, her heart was beating fast, and her body shook as she prepared herself. “Avada Ked-” her words were cut short once she realized who it was standing in front of her.
It wasn’t Voldemort, it was.....

My contribution to the @jilytoberfest 31 prompts, today being an alternate ending to the 31st of October, 1981
Here's a quick little snippet:
She registers the sound of the door banging open, and a shock of fear rushes down her spine as she whirls to face the sound.  Who on Earth– But then she hears James’s voice, confused and delighted.  “Sirius?”
Read on Ao3 or under the cut!
The thirty-first of October starts out relatively normal.
They have a usual day, though this one is full of pumpkin carving, hot chocolate, and dressing up for a small family picture. Right now, Lily is smiling as she stands in the kitchen, listening to Harry's laughter floating in from the sitting room. She sets out two cups by the stove and turns it on, watching the flames leap up the sides of the heirloom kettle from her mother.
James still teases her because of Lily's desire to make tea the muggle way, but there are some things from her old life Lily can’t just leave behind, and making tea the way her mother taught her to is one of them. It reminds her of a happier time, back when she and Petunia had a good relationship, when her parents were still alive, and when she wasn't in the middle of the fight of her life.
She decides, then, for a brief moment, to go to her husband and son, who are still laughing. Her son's happiness is possibly the biggest bright spot in her life, considering all that’s going on.
She pokes her head into the room and feels her heart flutter as she sees the two most important people in her life carefree and happy, like they haven’t a care in the world. James has Harry in his arms, emitting several bursts of colorful smoke from his wand for their son’s amusement. Lily leans against the doorframe and watches them for a while, laughing along at her son’s futile attempts to catch the smoke in his tiny fists.
“I think it’s about time for someone to get to sleep,” Lily says finally, still laughing. James looks over at her and beams.
“Me, or our son?” He asks, and Lily smiles.
“Our son,” She says, and James stands, holding Harry in his arms.
“Do you want to take him, or shall I?”
Lily shrugs. “I can,” she says, walking over to the two of them.
“I’ll go ahead and finish the tea then, love,” he says. James kisses Harry on the forehead before he hands him to Lily, who coos and rubs circles on her son’s back.
“The muggle way?” she asks eventually, and James rolls his eyes playfully.
“Yes, Lily, the muggle way.”
“Because you know it’s better if–”
“If you make it without magic,” James interrupts. “Yes, yes, I know, we’ve had the conversation a million times.” But he’s smiling as he says it, and Lily stands on tiptoe to kiss him lightly on the lips.
It still gives her butterflies.
“I’ll be down in a bit,” she says softly, and James is smiling brightly as he pulls away.
“And I’ll be ready for you. The tea will be in the cup and everything.” Lily laughs again, and James leans down and kisses Harry’s forehead again. “See you tomorrow son,” he murmurs, and Lily heads to the stairs.
It’s quiet for about five seconds, and then everything falls apart.
She registers the sound of the door banging open, and a shock of fear rushes down her spine as she whirls to face the sound.
Who on Earth–
But then she hears James’s voice, confused and delighted.
“Sirius?”
Lily turns and rushes back down the stairs to see that Sirius Black is indeed standing in the little entrance hall, hands on his knees, breathing heavily. It’s almost like he’s run here, Lily thinks, and she watches as James walks over to him.
“What’s happened?” James asks, a little forcefully, and Sirius looks up at him.
“No,” Lily says sharply, and both James and Sirius look at her. “We don’t even know if it’s you.” Sirius growls in frustration.
“Lily, we don’t have time–”
“What was the first detention I had you serve?” Sirius blinks. Frowns.
“I set a grindylow on Snape,” he says, winded, and Lily relaxes a little.
“RIght,” she says, clutching Harry tighter to her chest. “Now.” She glances at James, who’s still looking uneasy. “What’s going on?”
“I think,” he says, still breathing heavily, he’s shaking, Lily realizes, and she feels a chill run up and down her spine. “I think– that Peter is the spy.”
The room falls silent, and Lily’s heart sinks right to the floor.
“No,” she says, panic rising inside her. “No, that can’t be–”
“I went to check on him,” Sirius says, standing upright now. “And he wasn’t there. Nothing was disturbed, nothing seemed out of place. He was just… gone. Then I ran into Bellatrix,” he says. “She was there, outside, waiting for me. She went on about how I’d made a mistake in coming here, and she said Peter– he’s not who we think he is. We fought, she nearly killed me, and– we have to get you two out of here before Voldemort comes.”
“You’re going to take the word of Bellatrix Lestrange?” James asks, voice a little cold. “Mate, I trust you, with my life, but how do you know–” but he breaks off, because there’s a loud pop outside, and all three of them reach instinctively for their wands.
Lily’s is in her back pocket, but James… James doesn’t have his. She looks at him, then, fear evident in his eyes, and without another word, he moves toward her.
“Lily,” he says. “You take Harry and go. Run. Sirius and I– we’ll hold him off.”
“You don’t have–”
“I’ll get it. But you need–” he doesn’t finish the sentence, because in an instant, Voldemort is there, in the entrance hall, wand raised.
Time seems to stop.
Green fills the entrance hall.
Lily screams.

Thank you for participating every day!!!! We loved reading this

@jilytoberfest 31 Prompts: Day 31 || 1733 Words || Read on Ao3 A/N: I would like to state for the record that I know trick-or-treating wasn’t a thing in the UK in the early '80s but please just suspend your disbelief I’m BEGGING you. This is already going canon-divergent so let’s pretend trick-or-treating exists, cool thanks.
Additionally a quick little thank you for joining me on this ride <3 I've read every tag and comment and I'm so grateful for all the love for this fic! Keep an eye out for a masterpost with all these linked, and please feel free to drop into my ask box and let me know if you had any favorites! —
Three raps on the door and James opens it wide, only to find himself immediately arrested by the sight of the beautiful woman in front of him. Her auburn hair is swept over her right shoulder, a pointed witch’s hat sitting tall atop it as brilliant green eyes flicker between him and a small boy that sits on her hip. The boy is smiling, a disheveled mess of black hair poking out from under a little green hat—the stem to the soft orange pumpkin costume his little arms and legs stick through.
“Trick or treat,” the woman smiles at James, and his lips immediately pull into a grin, even as her eyes once again travel to the small boy on her hip. “Can you say ‘trick or treat’, Harry?”
Harry rocks his weight against his mother’s side, bouncing with excitement as his eyes (green, like hers) sparkle at James. “Dada! Dada!” he babbles, arms outstretched, and James reaches out to take his son with a gentle smile, settling on his hip.
“It was a long shot,” Lily sighs with a weak shrug, taking a few steps forward and nestling herself beneath James’ other outstretched arm—his whole world now within his grasp. “We’ll just have to try again next year.”
“Well if it helps,” he places a kiss on her head, “you two were my favorite visitors of the night.” Nevermind the ‘only’ that lingers in the air—the heavy weight of isolation that sits, strapped around their necks, trying its damndest to drag them further into despair every day for the last ten months.
But not tonight—not on Halloween, when they can coo over their son and his excitement, when they can enjoy the fact that they can spend another holiday together as a family (especially when the alternative is too gut-wrenching to consider). James places a firmer, longer kiss on his wife’s head as the thought flickers across his mind. Not tonight.
The pop of apparition on the other side of their wards sends his nerves on high alert. Exchanging a quick, loaded glance, Lily takes Harry inside with a protective arm around him as James reaches for his wand.
It’s not there.
He follows behind Lily in a hurry, mind racing at who could be visiting—they didn’t have any planned visits and everyone knows better than to show up unannounced.
“James—”
Lily’s eyes are wide and fearful when his attention snaps to her, misplaced wand securely in his hand once more. Harry’s started to fuss—the moods of his parents alerting him to something wrong, and she’s got both of her hands holding him securely to her chest, rocking back and forth.
“It’ll be fine, Lil.”
It’s an empty promise, but one he has to make. For his sanity, for his family, he has to make it.
Silently casting a Shield, he approaches the door just as frantic beating disrupts the silence of the house.
“Prongs! Lily!”
James’ shoulders stiffen. It’s Sirius. Or rather—it sounds like Sirius.
Sirius, who had insisted on not visiting too often so as to not draw suspicion. Sirius, who had shockingly adhered to a pre-planned visit only rule. Sirius, who’s now here, unexpectedly.
“Please, please open the door or I’ll open it myself!”
Sparing a quick glance to Lily over his shoulder, James holds his wand up to the door.
“What did you say to me the day Harry was born?”
“Oh thank Merlin,” he hears with a final thunk against the wood. “I told you that it seemed unfair for Lily to do all the hard work only for him to come out looking like a shrunken duplicate of you.” James’ shoulders relax the smallest fraction at the correct answer. “Now, let me in immediately. We don’t have time. Wormtail’s been compromised. You aren’t safe here.”
The blood in his veins turns to ice, the sounds of the world dropping away as a ringing intensifies, mixed only with the sensation of his heart pounding painfully in his throat.
Wormtail’s been compromised.
“—should’ve never listened to me. Fuck, but we’ve fixed it, okay?”
“James.” The croak of Lily’s voice is what pulls him out of his stupor, more than Sirius’ ramblings through the door, more than the pounding of his heart. Lily. Harry. Wormtail’s been compromised. “James, love, open the door.”
His muscles act of their own accord as he twists the handle and he’s nearly barrelled over by Sirius’ determined strides as the door flings open and the man walks in, long hair wild and unusual panic in his gaze. Grey eyes fall on Lily and Harry and James sees the sigh of relief expelled in the rise and fall of Sirius’ chest before he snaps into movement and slams the door shut.
“What do you mean ‘compromised’?” Lily whispers, eyes shimmering with terror.
Sirius shakes his head quickly. “I can’t get into the specifics right now but I went to check on him and he was just gone. No struggle, nothing.” His wild eyes turn back to James, who's still standing by the front door, wand clutched tightly in his hand. “Something feels off. Bad off. Fawley came with me as a lookout and I immediately had her help setting up a new Fidelius on my flat—she and Graham had done it for their parents at the beginning of all of this.” He runs a hand over his face, and when the hand is gone, the eyes that meet James’ are determined and tinged with fury. “We need to get you there now.”
Head still reeling from all this news, James nods, motioning for Lily and Harry as he walks over to the fireplace—Disapparating from inside their wards is impossible.
“James—” Lily’s hand grabs his wrist in a death grip, and he cuts her off with a swift, firm kiss, hand smoothing down the red hair on the crown of her head, the black witch’s hat discarded at some point in the excitement.
“Take Harry and go, we’re right behind you.”
“32 Longmoore Street, Lily. The Floo is open.”
With a resolute nod and a clenched jaw, Lily carefully steps into the Floo, green powder spilling to her feet as her hold on Harry tightens and she calls out Sirius’ address. James’ attention is fixed on her, watching as she and Harry disappear to safety in a swell of green flames right as a red beam of light jets through the window, shattering the glass and knocking Sirius off his feet.
Wormtail’s been compromised.
Without hesitation and with everything in him, James throws up another Shield Charm as he drops to crouch low, slinging Sirius’ arm around his neck and firing off a stunner into the darkness outside his window before dragging the two of them to the fireplace.
He knocks the little bowl of floo powder to the ground and scrapes as much as he can into shaking hands as curses continue to fly at the shield. The last one—some sort of dark purple spell that he’s seen on the battlefield once or twice, shatters the shield and the front wall of the cottage, dousing the room in drywall and debris.
Heart lurching in throat, James slams Sirius into the back of the Floo, dropping the green powder as he hurls himself into the flames as well, arm tightening around the unconscious man.
“32 Longmoore Street,” James states as loud as he dares with a trembling voice. The green flames dance around him, higher and higher until it obscures his vision and the floor drops out beneath him—a bone-white wand in a pale hand the last image he sees of their home.
Squeezing his eyes tight, hand clutching his wand and shoulder supporting Sirius’ limp figure, he tumbles out of the grate moments later, knees buckling as the two of them slam to the floor. A hand is on him in an instant and his ears reattune to the sound of Lily’s sobs as she checks him for injuries, Harry crying from his spot on her hip.
“—been holding my breath, I felt sick seeing you disappear, oh my god, James what do we—Sirius!”
With a groan, James sits up, clasping Lily’s free hand with his in an effort to provide some reassurance (for who, his brain is too adrenaline-addled to answer honestly). He brings the back of her hand to his lips, holding it there even as his eyes remain focused on Sirius’ limp form on the rug while he pulls out his wand. Placing the tip to the other man’s chest, he murmurs a shaky ‘Rennervate’, his breath of relief fanning across Lily’s skin as Sirius stirs at the spell, teeth clenching as he pushes himself up.
James shifts so that he can now fully wrap himself around Lily and Harry, his arms holding them close as the shock and terror of the past few minutes begins to settle over him. Wormtail’s been compromised.
His thumb lightly rubs soothing circles on Lily’s arm and he gives Harry a kiss on the head before looking over at Sirius, his throat constricting. “Peter…”
At the name, Sirius’ jaw clenches, his eyes reflecting a hatred James had only seen reserved for his own parents. “I’m going to kill him, James,” he whispers, a growl curling the edges of the words into something deadly. He rubs a hand over his face, eyes flickering down to where Harry’s finally stopped crying before meeting James’ gaze again. “So help me god, I’m going to kill him.”
“Sirius,” Lily’s voice comes, weaker than it had been in their own home, but still with that spark of strength that had carried them all through these months of isolation. She reaches a hand out for him and Sirius grasps it, the four of them connected here, grounded by touch with the proof that they all made it out alive. “You saved us. Don’t risk yourself now.” Dropping a kiss to the top of Harry’s head, she presses her back closer against James’ chest, and he doesn’t know if he’ll ever let her and Harry out of his sight again after tonight. Doesn’t know if he can bear the thought of not having everyone he loves within arms’ reach.
A lump has wedged itself into his throat. “Tell Dumbledore,” he manages around the swell of emotion, attention on Sirius. “Send a patronus, but don’t leave. You’re no safer than we are right now.”

So, I also signed up to do the Bittersweet challenge for @jilytoberfest and I got to turn an angsty quote into a sweet one. “You have given me so much pain.” has inspired this cracktacular piece of fiction. Enjoy!

@jilytoberfest is back! Happy October
A collection of drabbles
31. An Alternative ending for the 31st
Hours of study, hours of practice.
Transfiguration, animation, undetectable shield charms, ancient magicks found within the walls of the Potter library.
They told no one their plan.
Every night they return to the reinforced corner of their lounge. Hidden beneath the cloak of invisibility, James trusts his father's words, ‘Powerful beyond measure, your life can depend on it.’
Death would overlook them; he is no different.
Arriving as they knew he would, lightning-quick green flashes, ‘James’ crumples, Voldemort ascends the stairs, the house shudders, cackling laughter surrounds them.
“It is done, burn it down Young Worm.”
With haste, they run.

This fic is officially complete!! Huge kudos to everyone who participated!
JilyExpress fic chain 2 (M+ rated)
Lily has no idea how much blood the human body holds— later, when she's sitting white-faced and trembling outside the makeshift infirmary she’ll finally speak the question aloud and Sirius will tell her it's 5 litres (why he knows this, she does not question)— but she does know the burgundy pool beside James’ shaking body is too big, his wheezing too loud, his breathing too laboured. Her eyes are too blurry to catch the way he looks at her as he fades, her hands are too busy casting— a frantic attempt to mend his cursed wounds— to note the feeble squeeze he gives her knee and she's much too scared at the thought of losing him to focus on anything but saving him. A hand—Sirius — squeezes her shoulder and with a hurried tap of her wand they begin to spin.

Lily lay on a hammock, her eyes closed, her hair loose and swaying with the wind, looking like a princess except the cigarette in her hand marring the perfect picture.
“That’s a filthy habit, you know”, James observed.
Lily raised an eyebrow, amused, glancing pointedly at his own pack.
“We could quit together”, he suggested, staring a little as her eyes fluttered shut again.
She laughed, disbelieving.
“I’ll pledge you my allegiance, my lady”, he promised, jumping off his hammock and reaching for her hand. “Quit with me?”
And when he looked at her like that, Lily couldn’t say no.
Whew, that's my first proper drabble, exactly a hundred words, so that's exciting! Thanks to @jilytoberfest for the week 2 micro prompts.
@jilymicrofics I wrote a micro!
