the flower ranchers energy is something else this season. they hate each other but also can't get enough of each other. tango's scathing "it's you" to scott at the beginning but his teasing "pumpkin boy" towards him in the last session. scott generally being a menace to jimmy but also trying to help him make a guess on tango's task. jimmy rushing to defend tango and trying to say scott was making things up (and then also the teasing/crooning way he went "he's gone shy, tango!" to scott HELLO??) meanwhile tango was absolutely cackling on the inside bc scott was right and jimmy wasn't getting it.

idk i need to examine that trio under a microscope bc we've never really seen those three properly interact and this is what we get??? /pos

i havent seen anyone else point out yet that ivan reaching for till's neck was already a consistent theme, strangulation aside

all the way back to round 3. in both that and after the karaoke scene, he's doing it specifically to release his restraints (post-karaoke specifically, it doesnt even seem to be for a real reason other than to bring him some temporary relief/comfort after that). even if its not shown in the other shots, i think thats what his desire is there too.

and with the strangling too, in the end i still think he was trying to save him through it, in whatever way he could at least. you could take that in the "it was a farce to save him" way or the "it was an attempted double suicide" way, but i think its just interesting. we see consistently ivan reach for till's neck to give him freedom, until the same gesture strangles him instead. isn't that ironic?

one of the things i love about the show is like.

in s1 he's supposed to save this terrible team from relegation, but oops it's a taller order than anticipated and oops maybe he's not quite okay himself

in s2 he slumps back through the door with his tail between his legs and has to admit yeah maybe he fucked some things because yeah maybe his father damaged him a little more than he wanted to say and okay okay, maybe he's actually got a lot of work to do

in s3 he's putting the work in. he's making changes in himself, he's facing his problems and he's doing so well with it that he.....has a complete emotional breakdown. because hey uh *nervous laughter* what do you do once you start letting go of your maladaptive coping mechanisms?? haha no seriously haha how do you be okay now??? and the man he loves has no idea how to help him and can only try to be present with him while he struggles and tries to figure it all out. and ultimately he has to fucking rally and he's gotta pick his whole self up and tell people thank you and tell people fuck you and make the daily choice to move forward with his life.

Maomao is her own villainess who cares about class and propriety

You know how in a lot of shojo/josei literature there is a villainess (either the mother or a rival) who is deeply offended by the romance between the princley ML/ commoner FL because it's.just.not.done and commoner FL could never be worthy of ML?

one of the more brilliant narrative moves of kusuriya is to combine the person who cares about status and propriety to a frankly unsettling degree with the protagonist.

Because that has a lot of advantages:

First: this conflict between class/person is now an internal one. One of the reasons Maomao has difficulty accepting Jinshis advances is because she sees herself as unworthy of him. She really can't understand what he sees in her.

Second: It's realistic. Of course Mao Mao is aware of the class system. She knows she survives on the good graces of the people in power. She knows she's unfree to a certain point. She knows she has far more to lose. She wields this class system expertly to gain a maximum of freedom. I find it pretty telling how few of the rules Maomao actually breaks while still living the life she wants.

Third: It frees up the villains to have other reasons for their villainy. Even Lakan the person who comes closest to this character cares more about having a relationship to Maomao than about destroying Jinshi because he's not good enough. And he's rightly called a weirdo for his obsessions. The other villains (the Ma-Clan, the white lady, Gyouk-Ou) have other reasons for their villainy who've frankly nothing to do with the romance.

Ghost stumbles on the body countless days after he ran away. Protectively wrapped in vines and flowers, the man isn't dead — his chest is raising and lowering in a barely visible rhythm — but he doesn't seem to be quite alive either. Every time Ghost tries to untangle him, the vines seem to wrap more securely around his limbs so Ghost gives up.

He can't bring himself to abandon the sleeping man, though. He begins work on a shelter for himself and his horse.

Days blur into months and soon he has a small farm. It's nowhere near the size of his home, but the ground is more fertile than most and everything he plants produces in abundance. He's also accumulated quite a few animal companions - many of them wandering in from the surrounding fields or the forest, seemingly abandoned or having run away from their old lives too. He doesn't build fences to keep them in, but, like himself, many of them stay anyway.

Ghost begins to call the sleeping man dreamer, and without other human companionship, he talks to the dreamer most days.

One morning, after a heavy rainstorm, Ghost walks out his door and comes face to face with himself. A wave of fear spikes through him and settles heavy in his gut. He's been found.

Then all at once the panic drains out of him when he recognizes his dreamer. Seemingly awake, if a little glassy eyed, and staring right at him.
