Argh, just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in (with more Way slander)! Buckle up - this one's bitchy! The more out of step I feel with the rest of the PB audience, the more I double triple quadruple down on the Way defence until I find myself becoming increasingly mean and unhinged! Every time I see a post wishing for Kenta's rescue/release/redemption, framing him (accurately) as trapped and abused, by no means blameless but also not entirely to blame, I think to myself 'where's that same energy for Way??' Fully ready to keep digging my own grave now: I came across a 'consequences of my own actions' post featuring Babe laying into Way, and the petty part of my brain immediately started cackling as it visualised a parallel gifset for the Dean/Babe betrayal – consequences of your own actions indeed! (And, while I’m out here burning bridges, you know what? I’d include Alan in that too! All very well crying found family, but when you let your top racer dictate the rules based on which direction his dick is twitching...just saying!!! Also – and I blame the writers for this rather than the characters – for someone who cares so much about said found family, you’d have thought we could spare a second for Alan’s reaction to learning the truth about Way, or even heaven forbid a scene of him needing his own confrontation with him, considering they’ve known each other as long as they have Babe, right?)

And here's where I come clean and admit that I fully guffawed when Dean was so dismissive about mourning Charlie cos tbh I feel the same way! (Not to mention, why should Dean care about this person?? From his POV, this guy came out of nowhere, shagged his way into the team, undermined all Dean's years of hard work, and just like that was suddenly considered an integral part of the family, a family Dean now felt rejected and dismissed by - you be as bitter as you like, you angry little boy!)

I think for me it's a perfect storm combo of styling/acting/writing (or rather telling not showing), because, no matter how well Pavel sells Babe's grief, I can't stand Charlie, and am actively rooting against their relationship (and was doing so even before my love for Way emerged). One of my very least favourite tropes of anything ever is when you establish two characters as having a long and incredibly close history together, basically being each other's go-to person, whether that be as siblings or bffs (with or without a one-sided love thrown into the mix), only to bring onto the scene a third character who we're more often than not TOLD (and not shown) is just so amazing and special and beautiful that one of our original characters can't help but fall madly in love with them, usually to the absolute detriment of their relationship with the other original character (even worse when it's made into a love triangle, bluergh!), as if there's something just so irresistible about this newbie that the Babe in this scenario can't possibly have known love or desire until this point, and all that long and intimate history with their friend/sibling/whatever suddenly doesn't seem that meaningful after all, especially since in these sorts of stories it's usually a very rapid progression from mild interest to OH MY GOD I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT THIS PERSON THEY ARE MY EVERYTHING LIFE MEANT NOTHING BEFORE THEM! Which is only ever so slightly insulting to everyone else in their friendship group, let alone their discarded go-to person! (In fact, I wish more stories explored this, the complicated (and yes, sometimes grievous) effect a new romantic relationship can have on a pre-existing friendship, without going the cliched route of turning the one left behind into a villain or making it a love triangle. Platonic friendships can be just as - if not more so - complex and important as romantic relationships, but this is something the media seems very reluctant to acknowledge.)

full disclosure, this ask is from before ep 11 was out; i was debating answering as i try not to put any negativity out there but after thinking about it for a while there are some things i'd like to answer to, also i think it's more interesting having different perspectives and opinions and talk about it

oh waynnie (way nonnie) do i get you. i've been a bit emotional about this topic for the last couple days or so and i really don't get people lol i can honestly say i love all the pit babe characters (not tony) and my top blorbos are way and kenta, so maybe that's why? but it's so frustrating to me and i simply. don't understand!!! the double standard in judging two characters that are in such similar circumstances so differently. i just can't wrap my head around it. also i feel like we're very much ignoring kenta's active involvement in the whole human trafficking situation, which again, circumstances, but also: literal human trafficking?

you know what i kinda defended babe last time about the whole dean thing but i've been rewatching his parts for reasons and science and. i think i have to backtrack, actually. sorry babe you're alone on this; it was always weird, and what dean did is inexcusable and i'm not going to say you made him do it, but what a way to shatter his dreams and hopes right as he was about to make it to the track. also sorry about me, but what hurts me more is still the fact that dean betrayed the x-hunter family and not that he tried to kill charlie and then babe. i do have my priorities ig lol

yeah see i would have loved to see more on that, because again, family feelings. i'm not saying make alan suffer bc i know he already does and if i have to justify the lack of scenes i'd blame the script, but also (and this might be me just excusing them trying to read more into it than there is) i have spent hours goofing off with the same friend after at least four different funerals because we both deal with loss and grief in similar ways, and while we may seem flippant to others it really helps to have that distraction. this is also applies to jeff and how calm he looks after charlie's "death" btw.

sorry but i am a charlie shooter lmao i wouldn't really call myself that now bc i have been proven right about him, but after the first ep aired it was me against the mdl comments. and i won. unfortunately i can over-explain and gaslight myself into making sense of/seeing more depth to almost every situation which maybe isn't very helpful lol but in this case i think it was as simple as the right person at the right time- as far as we know way wasn't actively manipulating babe before, and babe himself said he was satisfied with his life and wasn't looking for or even wanted love before charlie showed up, so. i have kinda moved on from charlie (ok no that sounds bad. i'm just juggling other, more important blorbos atm) but i adore him still; he's the bravest and most selfless naive puppy full of love and affection and everything good that babe thought he didn't need or want in his life, and i need for him and babe to reunite and be happy again.

agree with the rest though! tbh i never really saw them as a proper triangle but since way and babe were best friends they (maybe accidentally) gave me everything i wanted in that regard, which is: not downplaying the importance of friendship, or ignoring how it hurts when someone you used to be with all the time suddenly isn't there. in a way it doesn't really matter that way was, up to that point, still as important as he had always been for babe because he still felt abandoned, and feelings aren't something you can control. his actions and disdain/straight hate for charlie are because he loves babe and he's jealous and hurt bc his feelings weren't reciprocated, but i kinda… choose to ignore that and focus on the friendship aspect. i don't hope to get that back, or for them to have any kind of relationship or even contact later, but that doesn't erase their past.

As a child, you saw many things normal people shouldn't. Ghost, ghouls, yokai, spirits, things that normal people shouldn't.

With parents that stay at Wangshuu Inn, you would often explore. The balcony, where you met a certain yaksha, was your favorite place to go.

Not only the view, but you relished in the feeling of being protected. Nothing to close, just the feeling of distant protection.

It's always been there, even when you didn't know you needed it. A comforting shoulder one day, cold the next. And yet, it always kept coming back, like a magnet.

It came time when you were at a maritable age and the first thing your parents did was marry you off.

A disgusting person, your fiance was, would go missing for the night and return the next morning with a huge grin on their face. Tried to touch you in ways that should be consented to but stopped trying after you kicked them where the sun doesn't shine (or stomach for females ig). Not hard enough to make them infertile but you wished you had the strength for that.

The comforting shoulder you once had, was now distant. There was still that distant protection but nothing else.

The day of your wedding came, spirits and ghosts of the the theater and nobility helped you with your makeup, looks of sadness and despair on their faces. They knew, everyone of the unnormalities you could see that you did not want this, but alas you were forced.

The threat of the murder of your cousins despite them both having visions, haunted you. You knew that Shenhe and Chongyun could handle themselves but the isolation and the unwell relationship between the children and the adults of the family made you feel uneasy.

It was soon time, your wedding had none of the traditional wedding rituals that a normal Liyuean wedding had. Only a ceremony and that was it.

It came time, to a door that you did not want to walk through. You clasped you hands one last time. "Xiao, I know you won't answer, but just know that you mean the world to me. Thank you for accompanying me when I was younger, but this will be the last time we talk. Thank you again."

And soon the bells rang...

Aster's Thoughts # 2

Something to understand about OSAS is that... There are going to be romantic relationships, yes. But there will also be platonic and familial relationships. I am just very fond of the found family sort of trope and how it could help the characters grow into themselves.

Skye as herself has never had much of an outsider sort of relationship with people. It was too risky. The public wasn't supposed to know that the third princess has been working at the Library and that they may or may not have encountered her while visiting there. So rather than risking her flimsy freedom, Skye decided 'I'd rather just distance myself'.

Then here comes the outsiders, the visitors from beyond the walls of Elysia. They were still a risk but less so than those who lived in Elysia. They rarely came by the Library after all and it's not like they lived there. So ironically enough, Skye found herself to be more willing to open up to those outsiders who would often tell her stories about the lands that they've visited, their homes, and their experiences.

It piqued her curiosity for the outside world, wishing that she could go out there and explore rather than staying inside her apartment, looking through pictures and videos caught by other people.

OSAS' focus, at least in the first part, is Skye exploring much of Vivet and meeting other people while her bond with Timore grows. As she forms lasting bonds with others and her husband, she begins to grow into herself, she learns more about herself.

It's going to be quite a while before Skye gets romantically together with anyone for real. She has a long long way to go before she could allow herself to accept that she could romantically love someone.

When building out Ryune's character, I found that I would enjoy it if she had a companion, but I really had no idea who. I had established where she was from, her family, and how she had gotten to the beginning of ARR, but interpersonal things eluded me.

I ended up just exploring around writing down names of characters that might potentially work, including many Scions, job teachers, a few heads of state, and various other npc's. While not successful in finding a specific person, I was narrowing down what would likely work best for her. Someone from her home region, someone smart and strong enough to handle things on their own if need be, and someone who really cared about making things better.

This first actually led me to Fordola, but I saw them butting heads far too often. Arenvald was another good option, but while very gregarious and kind and caring, I wanted someone who would be more capable of tagging along on adventures. I actually did have a thought of Lyse or Raubahn, but I felt Ryune would see Raubahn as more of a father figure, and Lyse felt more like a platonic love in the end. (Lyse hate is a complete mystery to me idk why some people don't like her)

So, roaming Gyr Abania, I went into Rhalgr's Reach on my way to the entrance to the dungeon there to get ideas when I realized that M'naago, sitting right there trying to help reconcile and rebuild, had been totally overlooked. Some searching into her lines and actions later, I realized she might just be a perfect fit.

Thus, I wrote some test doodle stories, found them incredibly cringe but also wholesome and good, and set about expounding upon the idea, giving them a home in Ala Ghanna and exploring what that relationship would look like.

So now here they are, working near each other and able to participate in each other's lives quite consistently due to often overlapping goals.

I imagine that right before The Ghimlyt Dark, a time when they were still figuring things out, there was some conversation that went along the lines of:

M: "I'm scared, Ryune."

R: "It would be foolish not to be, but we will get through this."

M: "Yes, but that's not what I mean. There's something else."

R: "Hm?"

M: "What if you get taken next, and all you leave is an aether-starved body? I can accept the danger we are to face but...not that. For you to waste away before my eyes, I dont think I could take it."

R: "Naago..."

Then they have a sweet intimate scene that ends with their first kiss, not realizing that it would be the last personal time they would spend together until after Ryune comes back from the final fight with Zenos, where both of them realize their feelings and decide to be together romantically (which I did write about).

also, whether more or less, i never expect my fellow writers to have the same level of knowledge. brand new to it all, been obsessed with it since birth, or anywhere in between, you know exactly enough for me. if you are on the lower side, however, due to my occupation, i'm pretty good at research and summing up information, so let me know if you need an ad-hoc research assistant!

What do you think of Mercury and Cinder's relationship? Is that abusive in your opinion?

Unquestionably yes.

I think there is in general a reactionary response to any labeling of a character as an "abuser"--to be fair, I see why this is, because in fandom "abuse" is thrown around so trivially that it doesn't often even actually constitute abuse, and even when it does, the term is often used to condemn a character and any people who like the character.

But what people miss, in real life and in fandom, is the abuse victims can also abuse. It's a common response--lashing out, projection. Many victims don't do this, obviously. But some do, and it's not insignificant either. I think both in real life and in fiction we prefer to think of abuse as something simplistic, black and white--and in terms of the deed itself, it is black and white. But in terms of the person? It's a lot harder because a lot of them are victims themselves. Think of the mother who is abused by a husband who then lashes out at her children (for a fictional example, BNHA's Todoroki Rei failed her kids in a lot of ways). And I know there's the mantra of "abusers can't change" but the specific situations are sometimes far more complex, and the safe realm of fiction, it can be explored (such as with Rei, who is now a good mother after getting psychiatric help). Plus, abusers are often nice and kind, loving, generous--even up to like, 90% of the time. That's literally why people, romantic or familial or even platonic, stay with the abuser.

So anyways. All that to say: yes, Cinder abuses Mercury and Emerald. I think any statement otherwise is just misreading. It is tragic, because Cinder is very sympathetic and a victim of not just her horrific childhood, but of Salem's abuse. But she does perpetuate that onto Emerald and Mercury. She's a boiling kettle that boils over.

To be fair to Cinder, she's never had a healthy example of love or a good mentorship. The closest she had was with Rhodes, and Rhodes offered her a lot of good but also was extremely flawed and could be cowardly. So Cinder acts exactly like this with Emerald and Mercury. It's understandable, but it is heartbreaking.

Cinder's recruitment of Emerald and of Mercury is played as her rescuing aspects of her childhood self: her hungry, starving self, and her traumatized, lashing out self. However, there's another aspect here too: Cinder uses religious language in recruiting Emerald and Mercury. I don’t think it can be clearer that this is a type of mental grooming:

You will question everything you know.

Cinder quotes the Bible in recruiting Emerald. Specifically, she quotes Jesus.

Follow me, and you'll never be hungry again.

If an antagonistic character quotes Jesus, that's an antichrist archetype. It's not good. (Of note: many antichrist archetypes find redemption; see, Johan Liebert of Monster). Anyways, this is an amalgamation of two quotes from Jesus: follow me, and I will make you fishers of men, and whoever drinks of this water will never thirst again. The first in particular is said to Jesus’ disciples. It’s clear that Cinder is recruiting Emerald and Mercury as her disciples (the literal next line is “I wish to take on an apprentice”)... and that she is their god.

Why am I going on about this? Because there is a power dynamic here. I know that Cinder isn’t that much older than Emerald and Mercury in numbers, but she is absolutely framed as being an authority figure for them. Not only that, but she’s at this point an authority figure they can’t question (God). When Emerald does question Cinder (complaining about Mercury’s recruitment) Cinder literally hits her. That might make it clearer in the blunt sense that Cinder abuses Emerald, but there’s nothing in the story to indicate we should see Cinder and Mercury’s relationship differently--in fact, the story goes out of its way to put Emerald and Mercury on the same level, and to emphasize the sameness which with Cinder treats them.

The first time we see them really interact as a trio, Cinder literally appears above them with light behind her, and lowers herself down to their level.

Cinder chastises both Emerald and Mercury, telling them again some very religiously-laden words:

Don’t think. Obey.

And in all their scenes, Emerald and Mercury are coded beneath her. The animation is shot specifically to emphasize this in the most benign moments.

Cinder refers to Mercury as “our Mercury” at times. That is absolutely parental coding. When people bring up MErcury’s smirk while he records the chaos at Beacon, they forget he’s recording under Cinder’s orders. Even Watts acknowledges this by telling Cinder to “please keep your... posse in check" (implication: they are subordinate to her). Lastly, the EM confrontation in Volume 6 makes it explicit again by pivoting from Cinder to their parents:

Mercury: Cinder doesn’t care about you. She doesn’t care about either of us!

Emerald: you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Mercury: You’re in denial. If you’re going to start having a crisis of identity or some crap, keep me out of it.

Emerald: *attacks him*

Mercury: I’m sorry you didn’t have a mommy who loved you, but I had a dad who hated me!

Now, Emerald and Mercury respond to abuse differently. Emerald never had anyone before, so she clings to Cinder. She even says as much. Mercury has been abused his entire life, firstly by his father and then by Cinder, and now Tyrian/Salem. He shuts down and tries to find the useful parts of abuse to keep himself going and just survive. At least his father taught him to fight, which made him useful to Cinder. At least Cinder brought him to Salem, who also thinks she can make use of him. Mercury sees himself as an object, and it’s sad. Mercury’s response isn’t him taking abuse better, nor does it indicate he is not abused because he doesn’t break down crying.

What makes me say it is abusive is that Cinder exhibits complete control over Emerald and Mercury. They have to obey her, or they get thrown away. Not only that, but she specifically uses their vulnerabilities to make them commit to her: Emerald is hungry and alone. Mercury was abused physically and taught to kill or be killed.

The tragic thing is that Mercury keeps falling out of the frying pan into the fire. First, with his dad to Cinder, and now from Cinder to Salem/Tyrian.

Mercury: I known better than to disobey Salem. Look, even if what he said is true, we can’t stop Salem. You told me yourself. Hazel tried, he failed, he got in line. That guy’s not gonna pick fights he can’t win, and neither should we.

I sincerely can’t see how people could read/interpret Mercury as going from stated abuse with his dad to no abuse with Cinder to more abuse with Salem/Tyrian. Not how arcs work. He’s spiraling deeper and deeper, and it’s not going to get better until he leaves.

Fortunately for Mercury, he’s had repeated “save the cat” moments when the cat happens to be Emerald (he kills the bookstore owner so Emerald won’t have to do it--and later points out that the owner is a cat lol, rescues her in Haven, tells Roman and Tyrian off when they insult her, etc) It’s pretty clear their relationship is the key to his salvation and later redemption.

And, just to be clear: this isn’t me stating Cinder is just a horrible abuser who should be put down. I think she’s gonna be the pivotal character who saves everyone. Likely with a sacrifice, but still. You know. Like Jesus.

So I'm in the mood for platonic yandere Gemanics ( Germany, Prussia, Austria, Switzerland ) plus Hungary and Romantic yandere Liechtenstein with a autistic shy mute female darling that's in a relationship with Liechtenstein, but with a dark twist. I'll tell said dark twist in messages lol.

❥ I actually find the idea of a platonic yandere interesting, so this was rather fun to explore! Although not really upto my taste. I decided to write different types of platonic attractions for this one, I didn’t wanted the characters to be similar with each other.

Platonic Yandere Germanics + Hungary

Austria {Roderick Edelstein}

I doubt its surprising to anyone that he would be a stern mentor towards you, similar to an agitated father who wants you to be the best of all and would push you towards that goal. His manupilation works quite well with your sheltered naivety, which wont be stained so easily.

Perhaps you are a small province or representative of a state, passed over to him with the responsibility of raising and protecting you. There could be a potential in you which would interest him more, a peculiar talent or your familial devotion towards him which he returns.

Perhaps he is just an old man who is no longer respected the way he once was, as a grand empire. Roderick would be damned if his own daughter begins to disobey or disrespect him, even though you will eventually realize his toxic behavior, it will be hard to get out of his tight grasp around your life.

You could be similar to a younger sister to him, since Roderick does treat you like an adult rather than a child. Although with many restrictions since he is overprotective and possessive over you, which is justified to him since you are technically a part of his country.

The only interaction you get mostly is with the maids and the guards, sometimes Hungary would pay you both a visit and rarely Prussia, since Austria wouldnt trust him with you at all. Switzerland would only interact with you briefly, adding nothing to your conversations while Liechtenstein will fairly get along with you

Hungary is prone to treating you like a child, which you would detest as a grown woman. She makes you pretty dresses and often talks to you about other nations which is actually the only thing you will know about them, making you feel isolated and so small. Which is what Austria would want.

Prussia would actually be quite neutral towards you, treating you with brief questions and answering some of your question with double layered answers. He might detest Austria somewhat but wouldnt go as far as to help you escape or let anyone else take you.

Switzerland couldnt care less and would only visit for diplomatic reasons or if Liechtenstein herself would want to visit you. Sure you would be transported to Switzerland if any invasion or war occurs involving Austria, since to be fair living in the middle of Europe was troublesome back in those days. *cough*

Germany would be kept mostly in the dark about you, being quite young than the others and will only know some stuff from his brother. Which is again, double layered answers. If he does meet you, Austria is over there hovering behind you possessively. Its mostly awkward and maybe you will end up having a crush on him- which you mentor will notice and take action.

"You are staying here and that is final", a stern glare was all you got as Roderick wore his coat. You had asked him to visit miss Hungary, wanting to get a change of surroundings rather than roaming around the mansion you had been in for years. Any resolve to argue was gone or rather was always pushed under the rug with his harsh statements towards you or the world.

He would expect you to be a well-mannered lady, reminding you about your posture or pushing you to learn piano or ballet, whatever it is. Roderick might take you out for some formal events if its with the Germanics, but thats mostly it. He is nagging towards you, mostly judgmental.

Roderick is similar to a strict teacher, pushing you to do your best and not allowing any disrespect or disobedience from you. Expecting you to be a obedient clever lady which you should strive to be. He doesnt need to be physical to get the point across, your already sheltered personality makes it easier for him to manipulate you or demeaning your presence in front of everyone. Roderick can be a prick and unapologetic with his harsh words, slowly destroying your self-esteem.

Basically you will get the most refined lessons but you wont have the freedom to choose what you want if Roderick deems it unfit. Or meet anyone improper. He would prefer if you are similar to Monaco or Germany, just not independent. Also even if his words don`t get across you then maybe he will let Erzsebeta take care of you for a while.

Switzerland {Basch Zwingli}

Of course, he is more protective and paranoid over you than he is over Liechtenstein. To such an extent that he wont ever allow you to be an independent state, no matter what happens or whatever anyone demands. Maybe he found you deserted after a war, almost a toddler on the brink of death before Lily. Maybe you showed him the innocence the world has thrown over long ago, Basch will want to protect you from the cruel fate again.

he really does not trust the outside world or its inhabitants, filled with brimming wars and cruelty around you both. If anything, you will grow up to be very isolated and oblivious about everything, not stupid but unaware of how the real world can break anyone or anything with enough determination. Similar to Rapunzel.

Not that any nation would dare invade you, since your land would be surrounded by dozens of explosives and Basch would make sure the enemy regrets their choice. You might have an army {which is mostly Swiss anyways} to protect your territories but Basch wont ever let you hold a gun. Not that you need to, your big brother would take care of everything.

You will be privately educated about basic things or learn how to fix things around you. Not much else you can do in an huge, isolated cottage, high up on the mountain anyways. Sewing or baking with Lily or just taking care of things. It will be a very simple life for you. You can read how much you want since maids would take care of the housework, only the best healthy food would be brought to you, you can paint all day long, basically anything not involving electronics and within the boundaries of the cottage. Like Rapunzel.

Basch is honestly just very paranoid about everything and everyone involving you since he already doesnt trust others and it just intensifies with dozen wars, your oblivious and childlike personality, you might be somewhat mature, but in no way are you experienced with the outer world or wars like the other nations are. Which is his fault to begin with, but meh, the damage is already done.

He would trust you with his citizens obviously, so he wouldnt really introduce you to other nations except Liechtenstein for any sort of protection. Also because he doesnt want them to taint your innocence and pursue you to gain independence. Not that many would say anything, considering he hasn`t exploited or harmed you in any matter, unlike what most of the other nations had done to their colonies.

Although he would allow you to meet Liechtenstein`s darling- not if its a male- or even Austria`s darling, if she visits due to war or an invasion in her homeland. Basch will nonetheless be wary with them and ensure they don`t talk too much about what`s going on in the outside world.

Again like Austria, he doesn`t need to be physical. Sure there might be a tracker involved but he won`t even verbally abuse you, there`s no need for such treatments or punishments since you already have been throughly brainwashed and see your brother in an intensely positive manner.

Of course, maybe Austria would have his doubts, Germany might notice something too, Liechtenstein might accidentally spill out your name, prompting their interests. Sure this might irritate Switzerland somewhat, but he wont ever mention anything about it and Lily wont ever spill the beans either, even though it would upset her to hide things from Roderick.

Since Switzerland is naturally an isolated person and ultra-independent in general with not much of a social life which he cares to maintain, there`s not much chance of other nations meeting you especially not vice-versa. You are never leaving his country.

In the mansion which you stay in, there will also be a pretty garden with a pond or you could visit Liechtenstein with him. Not that you can see much, Basch wouldn`t want you to grow curious about the outside world, you wont be locked in 24/7. Plenty of fresh air and new activities will be available to you.

In general, you will be a very sheltered, well-mannered lady who is unaware of her own prison and considers the world to be nothing short of a very dangerous place, which her dear older brother swears to protects her from. It will be cozy but rather boring too. Also somewhat lonely with only little talks with the maids to keep you entertained.

It’s better for the sake of your sanity that it does stay that way, or else things will be harder to go through, being blissfully ignorant. Basch won’t hesitate murdering someone who even dares to help you or change the way you perceive the world or himself. He lost a close family before to disloyalty, he won’t have that with you, his dear little sister.

Not to mention, wouldn’t it be so hard to accept that the same hands once wiping your cold tears, would wipe the warm blood off your face?

Hungary {Erzsebeta Herdevary}

She had always adored you, you were such a dear friend to her, such an admirable person. Maybe you were her assistant or a working lady she had befriended long ago or simply a fragile person which urged her to protect you.

Erzsebeta is a very compassionate person when she wants to be and so can be rather overbearing to deal with. Possessive towards you since she doesn’t want to lose an another important person to her. She wants to know everything involving you and will interrogate you herself, don’t lie to her either.

Whether it be platonic or romantic, the Hungarian is proned to get jealous quite easily or overprotective towards you. Can’t you see? She’s just looking out for you in this unfair world which only seeks to ruin and destroy you?

As stated before, Erzsebeta would treat you as a young child rather than a grown lady, such might infuriate you. Brushing your hair and dressing you up. Of course, she will consider your opinions, somewhat.

As long as only if you get snarky, if bark turns to bite then Erzsebeta would make sure to pull out your teeth, she won’t hesitate smacking you if you retort physically. Basically an overprotective toxic friend who is platonically possessive over you.

Unlike the former nations, she doesn’t mind hanging out with you in different places as long as you behave yourself . Or else her frying pan is hitting your head. Afterwards she will probably fuss over you as she lightly scolds you for misbehaving.

Her fussy attitude can get very embarrassing for you sometimes, especially in front of other nations. Pulling your cheeks, fixing your attire, stroking your back. It will be disdainful in front of your crushes, her attitude turns to extreme and she basically infantilizes you just to ruin your chances.

You might have already graduated or on the path of pursuing your career which Erzsebeta would love to make you doubt about, she might even bribe the professors to fail to or frame you for something illegal. Offering to tutor you, luring you to trust her, deleting your notes or your important assignments, she won’t hesitate to make you fail.

No maids over here, she will take care of all the household work and work from home. She has her ways to sweet talk with her boss and will even introduce you to make you feel more trapped or privileged to have such a great friend.

Speaking of friends, undoubtedly you would have met Poland or the nation would have heard of you from Erzsebeta ranting about you all the time. The guy cares about his closest friend a lot and would tag along to help her with anything involving you. Sure, you will be very irritated by him, not that he does not enjoy watching you suffer. it’s quite amusing.

Of course, there is Roderick as well. Although you would have met him, you won’t have much of a conversation since your possessive friend simply won’t allow it to take place. Sure they might be somewhat close but undoubtedly Erzsebeta would feel very uncomfortable and drag you somewhere else.

No way is she allowing Gilbert to get close to you, they might have been frenemies but they still have their sour spots and don’t get along much. Ludwig is alright for her, but you won’t interact much with him. Others such as, Katyusha, Emma and Lily might meet with you now and then. Albeit rarely.

She is very much protectively maternal towards you, despite acting as your ‘cool, rebellious best friend’, she can be very paranoid and suspicious over everyone when it involves you. You have a best friend for life who is strangely obsessed with whatever you have an interest in and is intensely appreciative of you.

She might have you even attend meetings with her but she will constantly hover over you as if it’s a date, as I said she can be embarrassing real quick with her fussy antics and tiring. Also arguing with her will never end well since she will accuse you of being ungrateful and gaslight you.

As for punishments, she will lock you without any privileges or let someone take advantage of you so you can realize how much you truly need her and how weak you truly can be.

Germany {Ludwig Beilschmeidt}

Very overprotective over you, no one is meeting you without his permission and neither are you going anywhere without him, he just wants you to be safe and potentially not near any danger.

You might have been his caretaker or his older sisterly figure, surrounding him with maternal affection which he had truly never experienced much of. Technically he sees you as a maternal figure that he is paranoid over losing, he can`t lose any more than he has, he is keeping you caged as a pretty butterfly.

Ludwig is actually pretty respectful towards you and very obedient to your wishes, sure you might not be able to have him leave you alone but he isn`t all that bad. He is very fond of you, as a child to his mother, he just wants a motherly familial relationship that he never got to experience. So, to some extent you do have some control over your life and over him.

If anything, you probably fuss over him more than he does over you, being his caretaker you were probably in charge to look after him and make sure he is doing well. such habits die hard for years. Ludwig loves it tho, it keeps him mentally sane at the very least after all he has been through at a very young age, you were there with him right?, so don`t you remember? How hard had it been for him? Never-ending nightmares and agony surrounding him?

Both of you are stubborn so arguments do erupt often but Ludwig mostly backs down and listens to you ranting about one thing or another, similar to a mother hen which he will find rather amusing. A hand on your waist as you scold him for frightening Feliciano away again, with a loaded gun nonetheless, then you return to your sewing and grumble about one thing or another.

Remember though, as much as it is rather domestic to live with him as his maternal figure, you do have a role to fulfill which makes things rather tiring or troublesome for you. He will buy you pretty vintage dresses or something similar which you would prefer and probably live in a small, traditional German town. Your duty is similar to a mothers` basically, and your set for life with a very loyal and over-protective son.

You can do whatever you want the whole day when things needed to be done are over, Ludwig won`t mind as long as it is within a range. Watch different shows, read dozens of books, paint or draw, sew whatever, chat with the locals, tend to your backyard farm and have cats, rabbits or dogs, he`s fine with it.

Don`t you try to escape or ask for help though, he will feel betrayed and that won`t end well. If you have a lover, then he is going to die as simple as that, Ludwig is going to explode and won`t trust you anymore, it will just make him more intense. Didn`t you at least try to think about how all of this would affect him? Instead of selfishly trying to satisfy your own needs?

No way is anyone else going to meet you or know anything about you, Ludwig is not going to take the risk. The only person who knows is obviously Gilbert and that`s it, Feliciano might have accidentally come across you once and probably think you are Ludwig`s secret lover, proceeding to flirt with you anyways because, well.... why not?

Any blackmail or threats won`t be necessary, not that you are brainwashed, but not being in touch with society means you probably feel isolated to try anything much. Gilbert won`t hesitate putting you in your place though, after all, Ludwig will always be his first priority.

Austria, Liechtenstein and Hungary might have their own doubts but it is only a fleeting thought and neither of them would bother to put much thought into it. Since Ludwig simply won`t allow them to and shoot down any attempts, Feliciano will be eradicated if he opens his mouth about it to anyone, heavens forbid him if it`s France or Austria.

It`s up to you to comfort Ludwig, whether he is angry or simply just tired, not that he will lash out but it might make him think you are plotting something and fuse out a bomb with his overwhelming paranoia. Things will be easier for you if you just act along, since you can get that credit card with only few restrictions.

Basically a possessive sugar child lmao. Unlike others Ludwig won`t hesitate buying anything you would ever want or need, he might allow you to hire a maid although he would prefer you doing the household chores, maybe or adopt pets, whatever, you need it? he buys it, anything except independency.

Prussia {Gilbert Beilschmeidt}

Canonically, he is over-protective towards Ludwig and undeniably has been a responsible paternal figure towards him. So naturally, Gilbert is stubbornly hovering around his daughter-like figure every time he can and he won’t back off no matter what.

Very affectionate, patient and gentlemanly towards you, it could be because you are a female, not that he isn’t loving towards a younger Ludwig years later, but nonetheless there’s a stark difference between the upbringings you both have had due to that factor. Keep in mind, he is a religious deep down to some extent and a man of Prussian virtues, especially during the 1600-1900s.

In the beginning, Gilbert would be rather hesitant raising a young woman since he doesn’t has much experiences with raising one in a proper way. He will be anxious and only allow the best and most maternally experienced handmaiden near you. No man is laying his eyes on you. The orders are strict and clear to everyone and he makes sure of that.

After his duties, every night Gilbert will keep in mind to pay you a visit. With dozen of books or whatever you are interested to learn, no matter how tiring from his burdening work, he won’t come to you empty-handed. He is a very attentive and a responsible mentor and makes sure your needs are properly met, not wanting you to fend for yourself the way he was forced to.

You will probably grow up not knowing much people but not necessarily lonely or naive. Gilbert would hire a personal assistant to teach you various instruments, arts or many other things. With various guards you could go to different places {only with high security}, even to plays or operas, wherever you want.

Behind everything Gilbert wouldn’t hesitate to manipulate the situation when his paranoia grows. It takes a few months of less stress for him to realize you had grown into a healthy and a pretty young woman, when your handmaiden requests for more accessories and sanitary products, when you converse to him about various philosophies or entertain the tutor with your theories, Lord forbid especially when he notices the fellow men stealing glances at you.

With Gilbert already keeping much of his stuff private to himself, no other nation will know anything about you. Ludwig might of course, but even he will be secretive about you because of his own concerns. Liechtenstein might meet you but won’t know your identity, in a way you have no one to run to when things turn sour.

Already being very unstable, any tries at escaping will send Gilbert into a high-driven tension, by using his authority and by legal or illegal means he will get you back and won’t hesitate making you behave and learn your lessons.

Tears, yelling and screaming won’t be getting you anywhere. Gilbert will stand firm on his decisions and won’t have you acting like a brat, don’t even try to resort to physical means {which tbf he was the one to teach you} because things will turn ugly rapidly. If one thing which Gilbert won’t tolerate it is disrespect, he does not give a damn if such values are not cared for anymore.

Basically you are independent but restricted socially, financially and under his direct authority. Ludwig’s government won’t do much since Gilbert is technically very much giving the same respect as he was given before and also he has his own resources in the legal frameworks.

He won’t use corporal punishment which includes spanking or similar stuff since technically you are his daughter and he finds it rather uncomfortable to do so due to that reason. But mentally you wont be able to spare yourself and be ready to kneel on peas.

Gilbert isn’t such a bad or dangerous platonic yandere to have but is one of the hardest to deal with. Not being naive or innocent will slowly destroy your sanity and in the end you will end up feeling very mentally and emotionally, not to mention sexually trapped. It is hard to deal with and ending up paranoid about everything will be quite common for you.

Liechtenstein simply could not ignore your request to go the park that day, with your eyes beaming as your smile widened on your adorable face. With your obedient behavior and reciprocal affection, it would not be a bad idea to go for a walk after locking you inside for months.

As far as Elise could remember, you have always been such a darling, always ready to help and make everyone feel comfortable when there was any tension brewing and she couldn’t help but fall in love with that aspect of yours. You always strived to charm people with your proper guidance and solve any problems.

Being a peacekeeper herself, Liechtenstein would love to chat around with you. And will be ready to back you up if it’s necessary. Nonetheless she gets rather concerned about others taking advantage of you or using you for their own benefit.

You being the younger sister of Kiku didn’t stop her from taking action either, considering the fact that she had allowed to keep contact with him only, he didn’t worry too much since he remained blissfully unaware of her unhealthy romantic attraction towards you.

‘Are you ready to go?’, you signed towards her and she nodded. She had also learned sign language just for you, although she didn’t had to use it often, she wanted to make you feel comfortable with her and supportive towards you. Clutching her basket, you both were off to a nearby park, simply to stroll around and get some fresh air.

It was safe to say that both of you had a lot of fun and relaxation, eating fresh baked goods, collecting flowers and fruits, strolling through the garden had been a nice change of experience. Elise was just glad to see you enjoying the day, truth be told she was keeping an eye on you, wondering if you were planning to deceive her all along.

But to her relief, you truly were genuine about your feelings towards her it seemed. You were currently petting a cat while she was on her way to refill her water bottle just nearby, with a last glance towards you she got up and went on her way.

Sighing, she was about to turn around after her bottle was filled when-,”hey there lady”, Elise could already catch a whiff of alcohol from the men, turning towards the intruders, she gave a dignified glare and a frown, her hand about to reach her gun when a realization struck her- she didn’t have it.

Elise remembered clearly that she was about to grab a hold of her gun, but then in pure excitement and thrill you had grabbed her hand and dragged her towards the door before she could do so. She hadn’t paid much mind to it, but obviously she had been wrong, she should have been more attentive for the sake of yours and hers safety.

Of course she wasn’t afraid, even though the men sneered at her and were currently getting closer with vulgar taunts and comments, Elise wasn’t a fragile damsel. A nation in her own right, she still had the higher ground anyways. Rolling her eyes at their flirting, she clutched her skirt only to watch with widened eyes as an arrow whizzed past her head.

One of the men cried out as he clutched his shoulder, glaring towards her,”God you fucking bitch- get her!”, with a huff and an elegance of a ballerina, Elise kicked one of the advancing men on the stomach as an another arrow struck them, this time hitting a fatal spot. Blood seeping on their shirt, one of them was about turn and run away, Elise tripped the man and watched an arrow hit his shoulder with a subtle amusement.

She turned her head, curious where the arrows came from, only to notice you standing there with a bow and a fierce look in your eyes. Upon meeting her stare, you grinned back as she ran towards you, hugging you tightly as the men groaned when she stepped over them. You gave them a glare and decided to finish the job once and for all.

“You won’t get away with this - you whore-“, well they had officially pissed you off.

Back on the way home, Elise almost cried over you, even though you were the on who had done most of the damage. “Oh I am so glad you are okay!”, with a tight grip on your arm, both of you headed towards Austria’s house nearby.

‘Don’t worry, I am doing fine, stop stressing out too much’, rapidly signing hoping that she would relax, Elise grabbed both of your hands in hers and gave you a chaste kiss on the lips. You gave a smile which would always put her at ease and looked around for any more potential dangers.

Elise decided to change the subject, now chatting about how Natalya and Arthur were dating, until the conversation was interrupted by Roderick. He was near the door of his mansion and waving the both of you over. And of course, both of you were glad to rest after all the shenanigans.

Erzsebeta and Ludwig were in the kitchen, baking some deserts while Roderick was reading a book. Gilbert was sorting some paperwork, Elise sat beside you on the couch watching television, cuddling together as the news blasted about several murders which had recently taken place.

Grinning in victory, you took a sip of your drink when Elise handed you the telephone, apparently it was Kiku probably wanting to check on you. On the video call, you feigned surprise and tried your best not to blow cover. When the talking was done, let’s just say Elise sure knew how to buy some great expensive stuff.

Oh, I definitely agree on Tech being aro/ace for sure. That has been my headcanon for him since 2020, and I am glad to see another person writing him with that headcanon in mind - especially since romance or sexual relationships are the norm you see in fiction/published books.

To me, it is sometimes quite frustrating to see people force relationships between characters, as then it almost always feel inorganic - as you stated - or, worse to me, some people believe the only way to have a 'fulfilled life' is to have a romantic partner. So often media does not explore the platonic bonds people can have with others (be they family or friends), even though I believe this is absolutely the form of relationship that needs more exploration/exposure because of that fact. So many people I've talked to do not understand me when I say that I do not want a partner, so I am glad that someone else shares in the idea of Tech being aro/ace, since I believe people can have a fulfilled life with just their family or friends.

"I would like to see that normalized in fiction." Yes, I fully, fully agree with this. Sorry for rambling, I just so rarely see anyone else headcanon Tech as aro/ace, let alone state that they believe that platonic/non-romantic/non-sexual relationships need to be explore more often, so I rambled ahh. And Tech deserves to have a close, emotional connection with someone who understands him and allows him to ramble and feel like his knowledge/self are valued.

As someone who has had several Queerplatonic Partners in their lifetime (in addition to romantic and sexual ones)... this sentiment is really close to my heart.

Don't get me wrong... I am a HOPELESS romantic, I am such a sucker for a good romance, but that's the thing- so many romances are just not well done and often shoehorned for the sake of filling a universally perceived need for romance as part of the human condition.

Platonic love has been so undervalued and heteronormativity so ingrained, most people can't even understand the difference between romantic, sexual, and platonic love when they see two people of the opposite sex interacting (and what's worse, but a little bit of a tangent- they can't even tell when two people of the same sex are romantically attracted to each other). It's compulsive, and it's downright damaging to the hearts of those who do not share that sentiment.

We as writers need to challenge that narrative and put those characters and their stories front-and-center, full stop. Media is the biggest source of influence in our world today, and it is our responsibility to help shape the world that we want to see through our stories. The easiest way to help people better understand perspectives they wouldn't otherwise stop to consider is by showing them.

What's also really important to show though, is how aro and/or ace spec people can still have healthily functioning relationships with people who are not aro or ace. As long as they care for and are willing to take the time to understand and cater to each other's needs through compromise (which is what I'm going for with Tech and Reina), happiness and balance are always within reach.

It hurts my heart that everyone around Tech is always cutting him off or coming down on him for being the way he is, even if it doesn't really get to him. He seems to be getting that much-needed understanding from Omega in canon, which is wonderful! But familial love is different from and supplementary to other forms, so I am happy to be able to provide him that with Reina.

And most of all, I am HUMBLED that you feel validated by my depiction of him. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me anon, it helps so much to hear that I'm doing a good job. Thank you for reading <3

Reason number 500 why I love Black Widow: it affirmed the Found Family trope that the rest of the MCU has shit all over. In earlier-stages of the MCU, especially right after The Avengers, everyone thought all of these broken people would inevitably create a home in each other. Then forced heterosexuality decided a bunch of rushed romances with no chemistry were better than allowing these characters to continue exploring the (often non-romantic) voids these characters were managing to fill in each other. So of COURSE Clint was retconned with a wife and kids with no setup! Of COURSE Brutasha and Staron were pushed into canon as one-movie B-plots (and then Steve later fucked off back to the past to be with Sharon's aunt, heteronormativity tops all and it's not weird if they're soulmates, right?) Marvel's no-homoing of Steve and Bucky is an issue in its own right, and deserves critique, but honestly I never needed Steve and Bucky to be canon lovers. What I needed was for Marvel to acknowledge that even platonically, Steve Rogers would never put anyone else over Bucky, because platonic relationships really can be that deep, meaningful, and binding. We had Tony and Pepper...get married as the world went to hell? Retreat to the woods and have a kid? Does that sound like Tony Stark to you? Having children totally fixes broken people in real life and never leads to them being shit parents and fucking up their kids, amirite?

And then we have Black Widow, which explores how devastating it was to Natasha and Yelena when their family (even a non-conventional family that was never meant to be one and became one by circumstance) came apart. We saw Alexei and Melina develop genuine affection for the children they were temporarily raising, and we saw them realistically express that in fucked-up ways because broken people often become broken parents even when they mean well. We saw them come back together to repair those bonds because in the end they can't help but think it's worth it. And Natasha parts with the others at the end, on her own and with no romantic interest, saying, "All this time I thought I had no family. Turns out I have two."

HELL. YES.

The Tragic Hero Full of Fear

Hello everyone! Before I get into this, I’d like to thank @jasontoddiefor for both the name and being the main enabler of this fun piece of writing. I also want to thank all my wonderful friends over on Discord for letting me bounce ideas off of them and helping me. You are all amazing!!

Ok, so let’s get into it!

The first six Star Wars movies (the Original and Prequel trilogies) are commonly referred to as “the Tragedy of Darth Vader.” But what makes these movies a tragedy? How is Anakin Skywalker himself, the main character of said tragedy, a tragic hero? In this meta/essay, I will discuss how Anakin himself is definitionally a tragic hero and outline his story as it relates to the structure of a classic Greek tragedy.

This essay will focus solely on Anakin’s character as he is canonically portrayed.

The Hero

Let’s go through the main traits of a tragic hero (as per early literature) and discuss them in the context of Anakin Skywalker.

Possesses immense courage and strength and is usually favored by the gods

Anakin’s courage is evident throughout his entire life, such as when he participates in the pod race in TPM or on the front lines during the Clone Wars.

While we cannot definitively ascribe Anakin’s abilities to any deity, we can associate them with the Force. The Force is able to somewhat influence the happenings of the universe in certain ways and takes the place of any sort of deity.

Whether Anakin is the “Chosen One” or not, his connection to the Force is stronger than that of any other Force-sensitive being, so he is consequently closer to it than most, if not all, other Force-sensitive beings.

Extreme loyalty to family and country

Anakin is consistent in his demonstrations of loyalty to those he has strong feelings for (whether those feelings be romantic or platonic).

His devotion to Padmé surpasses his loyalty to the Jedi, and he is always willing to go to great lengths to ensure their safety and well-being.

Anakin also exhibits a strong sense of devotion to his mother, Shmi. His devotion to her, and by extension her wellbeing, surpasses his duties as Jedi.

In ROTS, Anakin says, “I will not betray the Republic… my loyalties lie with the Chancellor and with the Senate… and with you” (you, in this case, referring to Padmé). In this quotation, Anakin’s loyalties are made quite clear. At this point, he is not faithful to the Jedi, but to his government, its leaders, and, of course, his wife.

Representative of society’s current values

During the Clone Wars, Anakin is known by the moniker, “the Hero with No Fear,” and is one of the Republic’s “poster boys.” He is charismatic, kind, seemingly fearless (obviously) and a strong fighter, thus representing the values that were important to the Republic at the time. The last characteristic is especially important because of the assurance it instills in times of war. As a representation of the Republic, Anakin’s prowess on the battlefield creates hope for its citizens that victory is possible.

Anakin also empathizes with the opinion that the seemingly outdated Jedi Code holds them back. In the Citadel Arc, Tarkin remarks that “the Jedi Code prevents [the Jedi] from going far enough to achieve victory.” Anakin actually agrees with this statement, replying that “[he’s] also found that [the Jedi] sometimes fall short of victory because of [their] methods” (Season 3, Episode 19). He shows a sense of allegiance not to the ancient ways of the Jedi, but to the newer, more modern ideals regarding military action.

Anakin claims to have brought “peace, justice, freedom, and security” to his “new Empire.” While the Empire's interpretations of the aforementioned values are skewed, Anakin continues to represent them as Darth Vader.

Anakin’s statement to Obi-Wan also mirrors Palpatine’s declaration to the Senate: “In order to ensure our security and continuing stability, the Republic will be reorganized into the first Galactic Empire, for a safe and secure society which I assure you will last for ten thousand years.” The people applaud this statement, demonstrating a general sense of exhaustion in regards to the war and a yearning for what this new Empire is promising them.

Lead astray/challenged by strong feelings

Though there are many, many examples of Anakin’s emotions getting the better of him, we’re simply going to list two:

Anakin’s fury and anguish after the death of his mom leads to his slaughter of the Tuskens

Anakin’s overwhelming fear of losing Padmé is ultimately what leads to his Fall.

Every tragic hero possesses what is called a hamartia, or a fatal flaw. This trait largely contributes to the hero’s catastrophic downfall. Anakin’s hamartia is his need for control, which partially manifests through his fear of loss.

Let’s explore this idea in more detail.

Though Anakin grows up as a slave, the movies neglect to explicitly cover the trauma left from his time in slavery. However, it is worth noting that slaves did not have the ability to make many choices for themselves; they didn’t even own their bodies. After being freed, Anakin is whisked away to become a Jedi. He does not possess much control over his life as Jedi, for he is simply told what path he is going to take. While Anakin does make this decision on his own, becoming a Jedi is a disciplined and somewhat-strict way of life and not one that allows for an abundance of reckless autonomy as he is wont to engage in.

(Side note: I’m not here to argue about Qui-Gon’s decision-making abilities, nor do I wish to engage in discourse regarding the Jedi’s way of life. I am simply presenting and objectively stating these facts in relation to Anakin because they are pertinent to my point.)

During AOTC, Anakin is unable to save his mother from death. As Shmi dies in his arms, Anakin is absolutely helpless. The situation is completely out of his control, and he is forced to contend with the reality that despite all of his power, he cannot control everything that happens.

He also feels that he has a larger potential for power and is being held back by Obi-Wan: “although I'm a Padawan learner, in some ways... a lot of ways... I'm ahead of him. I'm ready for the trials. I know I am! He knows it too. He believes I'm too unpredictable… I know I started my training late... but he won't let me move on.” Anakin believes Obi-Wan, his teacher and mentor, is holding him back. He expresses a self-held conviction of his status and skills and does not trust the word of his superior.

In ROTS, Anakin starts dreaming of Padmé’s death. Considering what occurred the last time he dreamt of a loved one’s demise, Anakin is justifiably (or at least justifiably from his point of view) worried. He consequently wants to stop these dreams from coming true in any way possible. His fear of death, especially that of his loved ones, represents his need for control over everything, even things that are uncontrollable. This overwhelming desire leads to Anakin’s drastic actions.

As Darth Vader, he no longer possesses such fears, for everyone that he loved is either dead or has betrayed him. He is the epitome of order and control, eliminating any who disturb this perceived equilibrium.

However, this changes because of one person: Luke Skywalker.

Luke reintroduces something that was (arguably) long-absent in Vader’s life, which is interpersonal attachment. Vader yearns for his son to join him by his side. When Luke refuses, Vader continues to attempt to seek him out. In ROTJ, Vader is forced to choose between the Emperor, a man he has long trusted and followed, and Luke, the son he never knew he had. Out of a desire to protect and keep what little family he has left (and likely a sense of “I couldn’t save Padmé but at least I can save her legacy by keeping her child(ren) alive and safe”), Vader defeats the Emperor and saves his son. Though his actions are definitionally heroic, Anakin never truly overcomes his hamartia.

The Structure of a Tragedy

Classic Greek tragedies follow a specific story structure, which, according to the German playwright Gustav Freytag, is as follows:

We’re going to focus on the three aspects that best represent Anakin’s story as a tragedy: The peripeteia, the anagnorisis, and the catastrophe/denouement. These occur during and/or after the climax.

The peripeteia is the climax/the turning point in the plot. Said change usually involves the protagonist's good luck and prosperity taking a turn for the worse.

Within the tragedy we are discussing, the peripeteia occurs when Anakin chooses Sidious over Mace Windu and solidifies his allegiance to the Dark side, becoming the very thing he swore to destroy. It is at this point that things really start to go downhill. He kills children, chokes his wife, fights his best friend, gets his remaining limbs cut off, etc.

The anagnorisis is the point in the tragedy when the protagonist recognizes their error, seeing the true nature of that which they were previously ignorant of, usually regarding their circumstances or a specific relationship (such as Oedipus’ realization that his wife was actually his mother). In most tragedies, the anagnorisis is in close proximity to the peripeteia. In Anakin’s story, the anagnorisis occurs during ROTJ. After being wounded in his fight against Luke, Vader watches as his son is brutally electrocuted by Sidious. It is at this moment that Darth Vader realizes that Luke was right—there is good in him, and he still has the chance to redeem himself.

The catastrophe/denouement (since this is a tragedy, we’re going to go with “catastrophe”) is the end of the tragedy. Events and conflicts are resolved and brought to a close, and a new sort of “normality” is established. The catastrophe often provides a sense of catharsis (release of tension) for the viewer. The protagonist is worse off than they were at the beginning of the tragedy.

The catastrophe within “The Tragedy of Darth Vader” transpires soon after the anagnorisis at the end of ROTJ. Though the realization of his capacity for good is the anagnorisis, the follow-through (via his actions), as well as what consequently occurs, is the catastrophe. As previously discussed, Vader saves Luke by killing the Emperor but does so at the cost of his own life. This serves as the resolution of the tragedy, for the hero’s fate has been confirmed—Darth Vader fulfills his destined role as the Chosen One and, in doing so, brings about his own redemption and dies as Anakin Skywalker.

In conclusion, the categorization of Star Wars as a tragedy is a choice that heavily influences Anakin, the protagonist and hero, of the story. He is without a doubt a tragic hero whose fatal flaw leads to his downfall. In accordance with Aristotle’s theory of tragedy, Anakin’s tragedy is constructed not by personal agency, but by the narrative itself.

Yay! I'm so excited!

Charles, my absolute favorite character on MASH--let's go!

favorite thing about them:

I enjoy several things about his character--the way he sets himself apart from others in quite an aloof way, but there's so much hidden underneath that he does not dare express except in the rarest of occasions! I love that he enjoys music and is very cultured, no matter what he's put through. He's also such a perfectionist, striving to be the best at whatever he does. He has a wicked sense of humor and such an arrogant exterior, yet there is some deep-seated pain beneath that haughty surface that is always a treat for the show (and fanfic) to explore!

least favorite thing about them:

I think he was written a bit inconsistently at first, because he was seemingly brought in as a kind of second love interest for Margaret and it did not fit his later cultured, sophisticated aloof personality to flirt with a married woman and check out her hips/body, making very suggestive comments about breeding. He's faaaar too sophisticated to be openly flirtatious, save when he is drunk (the Donna storyline and even the Martine storyline are more believable versions of a Charles in love).

favorite line

"Whereas I have a father, you have a dad."

honestly, every time he talks, I love it. He could read the phone book and I'd love it.

brOTP

I enjoy Charles with just about anyone platonically, most specifically with Hawkeye (they just have this wonderful teasing relationship that is well-matched in intelligence and wit), BJ (they seem to have a truly mischievous undercurrent running through them that Hawkeye doesn't really share, and many of their pranks on the show were great!), Klinger (I love the meal that Klinger brought to him and wish that their relationship had always had that kindness), and even Margaret.

OTP

I used to have one, but now I have two: initially I enjoyed Charles/Margaret in a kind of tough love post-Korea slow burn type way, not necessarily happening during the duration of the war. He's wallowing in self-pity and guilt after the musicians were killed and she comes into town as a civilian nurse and sets him right. I enjoy that she is strong and can easily take him on to make him rethink what he's doing. I like the idea of Margaret helping Charles heal, while he serves as a man that, though he says and does the wrong thing very often, is reliable and honest at his core (unlike Frank, Donald, and Scully).

I also enjoyed Charles/Hawkeye because I think that their shared trauma of deaths in the family at a young age can be played out together, and Hawkeye is the perfect person to draw Charles out of his shell with the genuine concern and brazenness that Hawkeye has. I like imagining Hawkeye making Charles more open, more vulnerable and Charles being a source of calm for Hawkeye.

I also like Charles/Donna as a romantic pair, but because their relationship was so very short and never followed up on the show, it means that I have to rely more on fanfiction (and headcanons) for this pairing.

nOTP

I honestly don't know if Charles has been put with someone that I can't take. The only one that would be super jarring, I suppose, is Charles/Potter or Charles/Radar, because it just wouldn't make any sense to me. This also goes for Charles/Trapper and Charles/Frank.

random headcanon

Charles's ego (and perfectionism, to that end) is in fact a defense mechanism to hide his insecurities about failure as a surgeon, son, etc.

unpopular opinion

It seems like everyone on tumblr headcanons charles as either gay or ace and in doing so, willfully ignores that every canon relationship he had on the show was with a woman. I do get the asexual bent, I do. There could be an argument that he may be curious about men. But gay? I mean, yes, DOS (the actor) was gay, but in the 70s and 80s, there were less subcategories of sexualities in those days, and I would argue that the MASH writers meant for Charles (and BJ and Trapper and Radar and Margaret) to be straight. With Hawkeye, bi fits him just fine. I dunno, as a person who is mostly asexual and who has recently joined tumblr, I think that people on this site in general are uber-focused on sexuality/ships first and there is very little focus on anything else about the characters, and today's questionnaire is an absolutely refreshing departure from the constant thoughts that every same-sex touch or look is proof of love/lust but every canon MF relationship is comphet. *shrug*

so I have a very specific interpretation of the Edelgard/Hubert dynamic that I don’t think is particularly common, but I feel is worth sharing. This is largely because some people end up diminishing the importance of this relationship when pairing each of them with other people. It’s disappointing because I personally prefer these external ships (namely Edeleth and Ferdibert, for reasons I will make clear) but often see either Edelgard or Hubert reduced to some jealous, cuckoled cockblock in them. Honestly, that’s just . . . boring.

TLDR: Edelbert is fascinating because it can be argued that Hubert’s feelings are born from guilt and shame rather than romantic love. This dynamic is unhealthy but deeply interesting, and it deserves to not be diminished in fan interpretations of these characters.

Something that makes Edelgard so compelling is the fact that she’s full of contradictions. She can’t stand people/creatures with more power than humanly possible, yet she must use her own superhuman power and cooperate with what she despises to achieve her end goal. More specific to Edelbert, this end goal is equality, yet Edelgard is not allowed to be equal to anyone. She is a detached, untouchable princess who needs to learn how to meet her friends where they stand. It is through her connection to Byleth and to the other Black Eagles where she learns how to adapt her ideals to work in reality - and to be human.

Unintentionally, Hubert does the opposite of this. His devotion to Edelgard began as an inherited role and evolved into something he does out of personal conviction. Either way, he is putting her on a pedestal and addressing her as a vassal rather than as a friend. Many of his supports with others involve him comparing them to Edelgard and telling them they’ll never reach her level. He takes it as his personal mission to protect her from those “unworthy” of talking to her. I don’t think this is intended to be selfish or malicious. I think that because of his role as her vassal and his failure to protect her from the Hresvelg experiments, he takes on this absolute devotion and prescribes it upon everyone else.

Their relationship is unbalanced as a result. Edelgard makes constant reference to “fighting alone” and being prepared to end up isolated and maligned. The line “the solitary reign of Edelgard has come to an end” in her S-support is particularly telling. While she clearly views Hubert as someone important to her, she does not seem to view him as someone she can be fully open with. Hubert’s constant addressing of her as “Lady Edelgard” implies that he would not take the opportunity to call her “El” if it was presented to him. Edelgard and Hubert are both so caught up in the weight and scope of their revolution that they begin to enable each other’s bad tendencies. Hubert doesn’t dare challenge her, because he thinks of her as untouchable, and this devotion allows Edelgard to take him for granted. It is not a healthy relationship. I don’t think this is a particularly hot take. Their external supports are crucial for shifting these patterns of thought and allowing these characters to grow.

What I think may be unpopular is this: I don’t think Hubert’s feelings for Edelgard are actually romantic.

(For context, I am aro and just really hate m/f friends getting shoved together romantically. It may be easy to dismiss my thoughts as just me being bitter that we can’t have a m/f friend pair without one of them catching feelings but allow me to argue my point.)

Hubert was assigned to Edelgard at a young age and told it was his house’s sacred duty to serve the Hresvelg family. He loathes his father for his involvement in the Insurrection of the Seven, which happened when he was ten. It goes without saying that this largely shapes his devotion to Edelgard. I would even say these events traumatized him to some degree. He mentions this in their A support, where he declares that his loyalty has been to her alone since she returned from the Kingdom. The path that these two share is informed and shaped by trauma - what Edelgard went through and Hubert’s powerlessness to stop it. More critically, these events radicalized them both and created the “shared vision” mentioned in his B support with Dorothea.

That particular support jumps out to me. When I first played the game, I felt unbelievably validated by it. Hubert denies accusations of unrequited love in an edgily self-aware way (the line ”do I really look like the kind of drooling simpleton to have that kind of motivation?” made me literally cheer) and goes on to describe their relationship as walking the same path. He then highlights the qualities he feels towards Edelgard (gratitude, respect, awe, empathy, trust, and hope). None of these require romantic attraction. Dorothea then goes on to say that “loving another is really about wanting to be loved . . . I’m pretty sure that’s different from how things are with you and Edie”. This scene spoke a lot to my own experiences - my feelings for my best friend largely echo Hubert’s (though way less dramatic, of course) and I found the form of deep platonic love I feel for her reflected in that conversation. The acknowledgement on Dorothea’s part that it was different from romantic love (whether or not she truly believes it) is what blew me away. This is honestly one of the few times where a piece of media made me feel seen which makes me forever mad about the Edelbert A support.Though it could be argued that he’s just closed-off and could easily pull off lying about it, I know those feelings well. Others might see this as definitive proof of Hubert’s unrequited love for Edelgard, but I just can’t and I wanted to articulate this perspective because it means so much to me. Close, all-consuming, and important relationships can be platonic.

I know better than to claim that the confession scene never happened. It is interesting to evaluate because it shows Edelgard finally calling attention to Hubert’s unknowing perpetuation of the gap between them. When Hubert states his feelings plainly, he is as composed as ever. Edelgard blushes and states that “you never cease to surprise me”. Hubert laughs this off, and that’s the end of that. It clearly is supposed to be a genuine love confession, but I think it’s more interesting to consider a man with only one real close friend misinterpreting his blind devotion towards her as love because he doesn’t really know what it is. I think it adds to the kind of fucked-up nature of their relationship (is it love or obsession? How is he supposed to know if a connection borne from trauma stems from love or guilt?). It also speaks to how difficult it is to identify romantic feelings when you’ve never truly felt them.

That being said, I actually do ship Hubert with other people. I love Ferdibert because their personality clashes create a sense of mutual growth that helps Hubert learn to openly challenge Edelgard rather than subvert orders he disagrees with and it’s honestly just really funny. I also love Hubernie because the idea of a terrifying man and a girl who’s scared of everything learning to meet each other halfway shows similar character growth. I just think that for many years, Hubert’s devotion to Edelgard gave him a really fucked up understanding of human relationships, both romantic and platonic. There’s a tendency to erase the weight and importance of the Edelbert dynamic when both are shipped with other people as well as a great opportunity to show that strong platonic relationships can and should be perceived as equal to romantic ones. I have read so many Ferdibert things that suggest that their love is all-encompassing and Makes Them Whole. Wouldn’t it be more in-character to explore how they navigate the web of relationships in their lives? I love the Black Eagles’ interpersonal relationships so much and each one shapes the characters more and more. I’d love to see that reflected in ways that center platonic relationships!

Yes!!! I love giving Luna headcanons, so here ya go bestie!

Luna Lovegood headcanons

First of all, definitely a trans girl, no doubt about that. She lived in a very open environment and was able to explore her gender identity at a young age. Her mother sewed her dresses to wear, long, flowing garments that Luna thought were the most beautiful things she’d ever seen. Her father taught her how to make flower crowns and crowns of leaves, and she’d wear them with her dresses.

She didn’t have to come out to her parents. Her femininity at a young age simply led to her simply stating that she was a girl, and that her name was Luna. Her parents were very accepting (and Xenophilius is trans himself because fuck you of course he is, so he was super supportive of Luna).

She named herself after the moon because her parents loved astrology and they taught her all the different planets and their moons, and all the different stars in the sky and how to spot the constellations.

The Lovegoods were definitely pagan, I mean they were all about nature and spirituality. They always marked every single holiday, staying up all night on the solstices, lighting huge bonfires, and making wreaths to wear. Pandora played the lyre, Xenophilius sang songs and Luna would act out stories and poems.

Cornish, and they speak the language as well because being bilingual is sexy.

Speaking of pagan, Pandora’s funeral would have also been pagan, obviously.

She’d have a natural burial, and Luna would recite a poem, and the rest of the family would also give eulogies, recite poetry, or thank the Goddess. Four members- including Xenophilius and Luna- would stand at each point on the compass and “invoke” each element (Air in the East, Fire in the South, Water in the West and Earth in the North) and give thanks to them. There would also be music at the wake, played by members of the family. Drums, tambourines, flutes etc. Luna played her mother’s favourite song on her lyre.

When she reached Hogwarts, I don’t think she was drawn to anyone in particular right away, I think she had better relationships with the teachers more than the students. She got on really well with Professor Sprout, and I think Hagrid really liked her too, because they’d talk about all the different magical creatures together, and Luna would tell him about all the creatures her and her father wrote about in the Quibbler.

Academically, she was very smart, and did well in most of her classes, but she didn’t particularly find a lot of them overtly interesting to her, unless she was able to put her own twist to it, which usually she wasn’t. In Potions, she wasn’t able to brew her own stuff, make up recipes, or use a variation of the recipe. Snape was much too strict with her and as a result, she didn’t do very well, which made her more upset than she would let on since she had been really good at potions at home.

She particularly shone in third year, since she was able to take classes more suited to her, like Astrology and Divination. Astrology was her favourite of course, and she’d talk about it all the time with Ginny.

However, in third year she also became particularly interested in DADA, mainly because she formed a strong friendship with Professor Lupin. Remus had been informed that Luna was trans, and since he is as well, they had things in common, and were able to talk about it with each other, Remus sort of taking Luna under his wing a little. They’d sit in his office and drink tea and Luna would give him copies of the Quibbler, which he’d happily read.

Luna was actually the first to figure out that Remus was a werewolf, but she didn’t tell anyone, not even him. She didn’t think it was her secret to share, nor did she think it changed anything. But she did find it fascinating, and read a lot of books on lycanthropy. After Remus had left, Luna told him that she knew and she asked if she could write some articles about it in the Quibbler, to raise awareness, or if he’d like to write any articles. Remus agreed to let her write something, and she wrote a three page article about werewolf inequality (but careful not to mention Remus by name). She did interview him about it, and he said that he was proud of being a werewolf, that it was actually very cool at times, but that it was simply wizarding society that had forced him to be ashamed. She wrote all this down, and it became the most bought copy of the Quibbler, as lots of students at Hogwarts wanted to read it, and they shared it with their friends and parents. So despite Remus not being able to come back to Hogwarts as a teacher, he did receive tons of letters in support of him from parents and students who had read the article and put two and two together.

Friends with Ginny by third year! Luna actually took a while to warm up to Ginny, thinking she was this loud, athletic, snobbish type, but then Luna got to know her and realised that she wasn’t that at all. Ginny was loud, but in a contagious laughter sort of way, and she could be very quiet and calm when she wanted to. She was athletic, but chatted animatedly about Quidditch teams, and Luna couldn’t help but listen. And she wasn’t snobbish, quite the opposite. She was the only person who listened to Luna, and discussed her ideas rather than swat them away impatiently. Luna made Ginny flower crowns, and Ginny stayed up with her all night during solstices. They became very close.

Ginny was the first student at Hogwarts that Luna told about being trans, and Ginny came out to her as being bisexual. And they were very supportive of each other, as well as being great at keeping each other’s secrets. They trusted each other with their lives, and would always stand up for the other. If Luna was getting picked on, Ginny would go feral and start fights. Although she eventually stopped, since it made Luna more upset. So she stuck to just being there for Luna (and maybe slipping a potion into bullies’ morning pumpkin juice that made them cluck like a chicken. But Luna didn’t need to know about that...)

That being said, Luna could get angry too of course. When she heard an older girl make fun of Ginny behind Ginny’s back, Luna wordlessly went up to her turned the girl’s hair blue with a wave of her wand. Ginny laughed her head off when she found out.

It was through Luna’s bond with Ginny, that she realised that she wasn’t interested in either the romantic or sexual side of relationships. At first she assumed that it was because Ginny was a girl, and she may not be attracted to girls, but it got her thinking about boys too, about everyone. And she just didn’t want that sort of relationship with anyone. She loved her platonic relationship with Ginny, and that’s how she wanted all of her relationships to be like.

I feel like she also had a close bond with Neville, and they gave each other plants as birthday gifts.

Projecting a little bit here, but Luna with Maladaptive Daydreaming Disorder, spending hours by herself making up fantasies and constructing worlds in her head, making up new characters, and getting so invested in them that she regularly saw herself as her characters. I feel like this started because of the trauma from losing her mother. She didn’t tell anyone about it, or at least nothing in detail, but she tried to explain it a bit to Ginny, who knew to leave her alone when Luna would sit by herself.

MaD also made Luna a little more detached from her gender identity, especially if she was acting as one of her characters (again I’m projecting here) who were either male or genderless. She still identified as female, but in a much more looser, fluid way, and even experimented with she/they pronouns, which she eventually decided she liked. (If this were set in the modern world, I can also imagine her using neopronouns such as xe/xer or fae/faeself, though in the canon world, she may have also tried out it/its).

Doesn’t know much about the muggle world, but Hermione gave them a copy of Alice In Wonderland which they loved. And if I were to headcanon Luna liking a muggle band/artist they’d probably like anything psychedelic or nature-like, maybe the early stuff of Pink Floyd (yes, Dev, I’m thinking about Atom Heart Mother).

Went travelling after Hogwarts, where she met Rolf Scamander, and they hit it off immediately. Very similar to each other, and soon became close friends. I also headcanon Rolf as aro/ace so their relationship basically became like Luna’s and Ginny’s.

Their house was filled with all sorts of plants and animals. Rooms were lined with trees filled with Bowtruckles, and owls flitted in and out of windows, cats slinking about the place, so many frogs. My god, their house was wonderful.

Adopted Lorcan and Lysander because ffs not everyone has to have a nuclear family jkr 🙄. And parents also don’t have to be romantically or sexually involved with each other either; Luna and Rolf had a good relationship, both wanted to be parents, so they raised the twin boys together. And Lorcan and Lysander had a fantastic childhood, can you imAGINE?!

Godmother of Lily Luna, obviously. And Harry and Ginny’s kids loved going round Luna’s place, so more often than not, the house was filled with not only the entire natural world, but also a bunch of children running about the place.

Oh also, Luna has nymph ancestors. They just do, okay?
