wanted to expand on some of my tags in a recent post
when alicent and rhaenyra were young, ali would constantly reject rhaenyra in little ways that would cement the seeds of self-doubt. rhaenyra was absolutely infatuated, however, as was alicent, and so they pushed that boundary as far as it could realistically go.
then the Great Divide happened around alicent's marriage, and a devastated rhaenyra begins to explore relationships with men that would never reject her the way alicent would. by doing that, rhaenyra 'moves on'.
alicent never has that. the wound simply festers within this closeted lesbian woman and it grows more and more painful to watch the woman she loves get everything she wants out of relationships, exploring their complexities that she could never express to her. she is stuck with viserys but all she wants is rhaenyra rhaenyra rhaenyra!!!!
rhaenyra in contrast falls for alicent all over again harwin, a dark curly haired human with kind eyes that would never reject her or avoid pursuing her.
when she loses alicent harwin she is desperate and retreats to the only other character she is familiar with because she is Emotionally Undeveloped - daemon targaryen, someone who reminds her of herself, a walking talking source of validation for her insecurities.
fucking devastating

remember when daemon targaryen mocks viserys for believing in prophecies? remember when viserys says “many in my family have been dragonriders, very few have been dreamers”? remember when for the death of lucerys, instead of going after aemond, daemon will send assassins to murder helaena’s firstborn son and traumatize her? remember on the bridge when he says to otto “i would rather feed my sons to the dragons”? maybe grrm, if he wasn’t daemon’s  no1. fanboy, should have given daemon a death to measure his words and his deeds against helaena, the dreamer and dragonrider of the family whose child he kinslayed.

i remember right after the first ep came out, a lot of people in my non-tumblr circles saying of aemma’s death “why did they do that that wasn’t in the books how dare they ugh ugh ugh gross”
and yes
but also that why did they do that is something that’s sitting with me because i think we were all so used to the bar on got being so low that things like that were done to shock the viewer and nothing else.  and that’s not hotd’s play.
aemma’s death was setting the stage for eighteen different things—the explicit horror of it was intentional.  it echoes through the following episodes, the seed for what we’re seeing with alicent’s marital rape, with viserys never being able to understand that his “love” for the women in his life (aemma, rhaenyra, alicent) and his “i’m just trying to be a good guy” attitude is nothing more than a velvet glove over a punch that still hits just very hard: he treats the women in his life as pawns.  not just because king, but because that is who he is even in his most private and “human” moments with them.  he waffles and prevaricates and tells different truths to different people he cares about because he himself can’t face his own truths.
and all that is before we get to what’s yet to come, with rhaenyra’s own marriages and childbirths which will absolutely have important echoes of aemma’s death.
this show is highlighting in the most brutal possible way the misogyny of martin’s world. aemma’s death was more than just a plot point, more than just something to make us hide our faces and go “here’s this world again, back at it to horrify us and make us hurt”—it is echoing and reverberating.  it is the thesis statement of the whole show.  it wasn’t meaningless.  it was the point.

Who was the biggest threat to the green kids?
Easy. Daemon.
Daemon has consistently been shown to be violent, unpredictable, and selfish. He has coveted the crown since the beginning of the show, and violently done whatever he has wanted.
He is the one who rejoiced at the death of an infant because that meant he had a chance again at being the heir once his brother died.
He is the one who immediately jumped to war and choked Rhaenyra for taking her time on making a decision.
He is the one who took Rhaenyra out to corrupt her and her image so that nobody would respect her and her claim would be ruined.
He is the one who beheaded Vaemond Velaryon for speaking the truth.
He is the one who immediately assume that his decrepit, rotting, sick brother who literally had his eye rot out of his skull was murdered by Alicent (I mean wtf?!)
He is the one who time and time again does unsavory, violent, and cruel things to solidify his claim or to get himself closer to the Iron Throne.
Daemon is a terrifying, violent, opportunistic, unpredictable, and his previous actions were enough evidence to have at least a low level of fear for the safety of Alicent and her kids after Viserys dies. But if that wasn’t enough, Daemon’s intense hatred for Otto and the Hightower family would be enough to solidify whatever fear is left.
Daemon was always a threat to the green kids. He wants to be as close to the Iron Throne as possible. And even if Rhaenyra would want to protect them, Daemon cannot be controlled, and he would do whatever he feels is best for himself and his line.

you're the only one worth seeing; the only place worth being || Alicent Hightower × Rhaenyra Targaryen
Tumblr media
summary: What good is sacrifice if your soul still feels blighted, if your heart still twists whenever you think of your cold bed? What do you care for duty when you would curse all Seven Kingdoms if only to lay back down on the warm godswood grass all these years ago? What good is a castle when it's no home? What good is a bed when it's not hers?
author's note: takes place after the wretched time-skip, some time before episode 7. second person narration, you're basically looking through alicent's insane lesbian eyes and are overcome with nostalgia, longing, homesickness and flashbacks. not beta read, written last monday (impulsively).
"Our hearts were never one," you tell her one day. Or maybe you think that to yourself in the quiet of many a tensed moments between the two of you, the voice in your head hissing in what may come off as anger, resentment, but deep down underneath is just pain, endless and excruciating.
Or perhaps it's a fragment of one of those imagined conversations that bloom in the pits your mind you when you least expect it, rarely pleasant, usually to wound and leave a bitter aftertaste whenever something reminds you of her or you wake with the knowledge that you will be forced to face her again and again until what feels like the end of time.
Either way, the sentence comes upon you someday in some shape and it is a lie. You know that deep down despite yourself, though you are not sure if she would ever believe you should you try to explain.
It's not as if she is looking for a conversation anyway anymore. Her shadow passes swiftly through the halls of the keep, her house, her castle, her home. Though you are the Queen, you doubt it will ever feel like yours.
Your home is the cage in your chest, your breath pressed against its bars in fear, the cause of which you cannot pinpoint anymore. Your cage is the castle. Rhaenyra is your home and your home is empty, though she – a memory you refuse to release – she is the ghost that haunts it. Her lavender eyes turn vacant each time they meet your face.
You have acknowledged that you might have gone quite mad somewhere along the way. But there is nothing to hold on to, nobody to tell, for who could understand when not even you seem to understand the entirety of your heartache?
Sometimes, when you gaze at her for too long, you start to notice the tiredness under her eyes, the tired furrow of her fair brow, slim fingers playing with golden signets in a way that paints her as anything but tranquil. It makes you want to cradle her hands in yours, recline on the fresh garden grass and say to her, "Come, lay your head in my lap." It makes your heart near lurch out of your chest and where it used to rest, and it nauseates you to have to remind it each time that there is no longer a place for you there.
Truth be told, you do not feel as if there is a place for you anywhere at this point. Yes, you sleep in the softest sheets and own more land than you could have ever needed, and you may hold the Kingdoms in the palm of your hand... but what is it all for? What good is sacrifice if your soul still feels blighted, if your heart still twists whenever you think of your cold bed? What do you care for duty when you would curse all Seven Kingdoms if only to lay back down on the warm godswood grass all these years ago? What good is a castle when it is no home? What good is a bed when it's not hers?
Then the soft fog of delusion flees your brain, leaving you standing before the princess, staring at her for longer than necessary or proper. Reality crushes you all at once. Confusion flickers across Rhaenyra's face, something similar to your state, something distant that softens her features. You wonder if she knows, if her heart is as much a foolish acrobat in these moments as yours.
You wonder if there is a sort of string, a cruel, invisible jest that ties the two of you together and tugs each time one wanders off or the other gets too close and everything aches all over again.
Your heart is foolish and returns like an old, lovesick dog, unable to remember that its master has long abandoned their home. It pains you to remind it but it is necessary, lest you succumb to any more delusions. It has been years.
You should have moved on the way she has; with a handsome new lover at her side, making the best out of her forced marriage. Gods, have you tried, yet even considering that felt like betrayal. While she has always been able to float above most mortals like a soaring star, burning its path through the realm, you remained chained to misery embodied, its form the rotting corpse of her father. You are the Queen now. You are her step-mother. You are the blazing light of your house. You are the mother of the future king. You are the royal womb.
Amidst all these things and more, you are no longer yourself. Amidst all these things and more, all you have ever prayed to be was hers.

I don't know who needs to hear this but there's actually a big fucking difference between the illegitimacy of Rhaenyra's eldest three sons being acknowledged and Aemond being disabled.
The thing about Jace, Luke, and Joffrey's bastardry is that it doesn't actually have to be a permanent thing. Viserys and/or Rhaenyra have the power to legitimise them. There is a permanent fix to the dangerous situation that Rhaenyra chose to bring those children into and Viserys ignores.
On the other hand there is no fix to Aemond's injury.
