steddie headcanons because they’re the only thing in my mind rn
- steve traces eddie’s tattoos and sometimes comes up with concept ideas for a new tattoo
- eddie always runs hot and steve runs cold so during the winter steve’s always clinging to eddie at night to try and steal some body warmth
- eddie’s dyslexic and usually he’ll try to read a book by himself but if he gets frustrated, steve will often read aloud to him although he doesn’t understand half of what’s happening when reading lord of the rings
- steve is the only person eddie will allow to attempt to style his hair
- steve steals eddie’s rings ALL THE TIME. he even has a little tray on his dresser where he’ll keep them safe until he gives them back. (for their one year anniversary, eddie gave him the first ring he’d ever bought)
- eddie loves horror movies but steve despises them, so whenever he knows a jumpscare is coming, he’ll kiss steve to distract him
- steve = hates olives, eddie = loves olives
- although they didn’t properly meet until the day in the boathouse, they’d seen each other around before. eddie, naturally, knew of steve longer seeing as he used to prance around the school halls like a peacock, but the first time he interacted with him was when steve helped him up after tommy h pushed him over in gym class. he didn’t speak to eddie, but that silent exchange stuck with him for a long time. steve first properly acknowledged eddie when he came into scoops ahoy with his band mates. of course, he knew of him before and had seen him before, but that hot afternoon was the first time he stopped and properly saw him.
- eddie often stims by chewing and so steve makes sure whenever he wears hoodies they have drawstrings on so that eddie can chew on them
- steve actually has awful eyesight and he has to wear round, thin framed glasses he absolutely despises when reading — eddie finds it adorable the way he huffs and pouts when putting them on
- whenever steve gets a nightmare, eddie will make up a song on the spot and sing it to a random tune to distract him. it’ll always be about the most stupidest thing, like soup or pigeons or literally anything, but it always manages to calm steve down
- steve has always been interested in playing the guitar — ever since eddie practically saved his ass in the upside down by playing it — so one day eddie sits down right behind steve, places the guitar in steves lap and guides his hands to play the right chords. it takes nearly two hours for steve to be able to play the most simple tune, but eddie is proud nonetheless
- eddie will literally drive to the family video store, give steve a kiss and then drive back home. this is a daily occurrence.
- steve has mild memory issues due to his various amount of head injuries over the year, and so eddie will leave little sticky notes around the house to make sure he doesn’t forget anything, even if it’s as simple as “remember to brush your teeth, darling!”
- eddie is always insanely gentle whenever they’re trying out their “firsts” in their relationship because he knows it’s the first time steve has ever been with another boy
- eddie is awful at cooking. steve has banned him from the kitchen after he nearly set it on fire when trying to make eggs
- his demo-bat scars make steve anxious about taking his shirt off/swimming because he’s afraid people will view him as scary or a monster. eddie makes sure to take his time tracing and kissing across every bump of skin to make sure steve knows that he’s the most beautiful person eddie has ever seen
- the first time steve met wayne was entirely by accident: he’d been on his way to sneak out the trailer after spending the night, not knowing that wayne had finished his shift early. they had stared at each other, stunned silent: steve shirtless, messy haired and covered in hickeys, wayne holding a cup of coffee, just trying to get some rest. (steve was absolutely mortified, but eddie promised him that wayne quite liked him, and that in hindsight, it was rather hilarious)
- steve has insomnia due to a lot of stress and paranoia, and him and eddie will often take late night drives around town because the sound of the engine helps lull steve to sleep
- the first time he meets el, eddie is terrified she doesn’t like him because she seems wary around him, but after steve sets her aside and talks to her quietly, he learns that she’s simply admiring eddies hair and isn’t sure how to compliment him or bring it up in conversation. steve tells eddie this, and eddie immediately goes to el, giving her lots of tips on how to grow her hair out quickly
- they spend a whole year travelling — seeing as neither of them had ever left hawkins before — but they eventually return home because although they’d never admit it, they missed the kids more than anything
- steve wears eddies clothes more than he wears his own

hi erin! i have a little request and it just hit me like an epiphany- and yk when those hit and your whole mind becomes occupied with it and starts imagining scenarios- yea like that,, so in this little epiphany-request it’s a little angsty but fluffy and it’s if steve and reader had a messy break up that caused her to move away for college or something, probably after vecna when steve maybe started drawing himself closer to nancy and reader saw it, and maybe that night there was a big blow up argument and the six little nugget topic w nancy came up in it, and they break up. then reader makes a choice to move to college to get a hold of herself, and maybe a year later she comes back for the holidays ‘cause the kids and robin have been pestering her for a while, and when she comes back all the kids + robin, and eddie who didn’t die cause im not mean like the duffer bros, plan a movie night or something and steve hasn’t been told anything so he’s obviously upset and like “why are all of you going together without me?” and he’s arguing cause he’s a big of a territorial bean when it come to his kids, and then after a while max gets rlly annoyed and starts yelling at him for driving her big sister figure out of town and not letting them enjoy a day with her, and he kinda just goes mum because holy shit she’s back and he has half a mind to run to her house -that he drives past every day ignoring the pain in his heart- and beg for your forgiveness ‘cause you left. you left and he didn’t realize how badly he needed you- and idk if this makes sense but maybe when they see each other they just stare and go like the shy hi’s? bonus if reader kept a necklace or smth that he gave him cause he’s just staring at it and he’s gonna burst into tears I know it.

Voices were raised, doors were slammed and hearts were broken that fateful night.
“I have eyes, Steve!” you shouted, “I see how you look at her!”
“Y/N, it’s not like that, I promise!” Steve pleaded with you.
“You told her you saw yourself having kids with her!” you screamed.
When his mouth opened and closed, unable to deny it, you laughed bitterly. Tears were stinging your eyes, but you refused to cry in front of him. He didn’t deserve your tears.
“Yeah. Nancy told me. At least someone has the decency to tell me the truth.”
You were angry and hurt. You wanted Steve to hurt as much as you were. You’d spent the entire week watching your boyfriend with his ex-girlfriend. There was still something there, as much as it pained you to admit it. A person would have to be blind to miss that.
“You’re still in love with her, aren’t you?” you whispered.
His eyes, looking as defeated as you felt.
“I’m with you though, Y/N.”
“That doesn’t answer my question,” you said, pressing your lips together in a tight line.
You were practically grinding your teeth to a dust to try and keep from crying. You weren’t enough for Steve if he apparently was still in love with Nancy.
“I don’t know if I am, okay?”
He threw his hands up in exasperation.
“It’s not like I’ve cheated on you! I never would!”
You knew he was right, but this was almost worse. How much lower can one feel when they find out that the person they love doesn’t love you the same? You told him just as much.
“But it’s almost worse, Steve. How would you feel if you watched me getting close to my ex again? Probably like a knife to the heart, huh?”
He was quiet again.
“You basically admitted you wanted to marry her!”
“I know, I know. It just…came out,” he winced.
“Oh that’s rich,” you huffed, “Let me just go find Eddie and profess my undying love to him while we’re at it.”
“That’s not fair and you know it,” he scowled.
“Well now you know how I feel,” you crossed your arms, glaring at him, “Not to mention she’s in a relationship too, Steve! How is that fair to her either?”
“I don’t know, okay? I wasn’t really thinking,” he said, rubbing a hand over his face.
“Be honest with me. Have you ever really be invested in this relationship or was I just a distraction from her?”
“How could you even think that? You know I love you!” Steve grimaced.
“It’s hard to tell anymore,” you frowned, crossing your arms, looking away from him.
Just when you thought he couldn’t shatter your heart anymore, he succeeded in doing just that.
“Maybe…maybe we should see other people,” he said, running a hand through his hair.
“Yeah. Maybe we should,” you replied bitterly.
That is how the best relationship you’d ever had came to a horrifying, heartbreakingly abrupt ending.

You ended up moving away for college after your split from Steve. It hurt way too much to stay in Hawkins, having to run into him.
You have no idea what happened with him and Nancy. She was dating Jonathan after all, but who knows? Not that you cared. You threw yourself into studying, into parties, into work, anything that would help you forget about Steve, forget about Hawkins.
Summer break was coming up soon and you still hadn’t figured out your plans yet. Your roommate had invited you to vacation with her and her family, but you hated to be an imposition.
One phone call changed your course though.
You were studying for finals and had come to a much needed place for a break when the phone in your dorm rang. Your eyes were aching and had began to cross from staring at your text books for so long. You sighed in relief, even grateful for a telemarketer at this point.
Leaning across your bed, you grabbed the receiver, bringing it to your ear.
“Hello?”
“Well, look who’s alive!”
You smiled at the familiar, teasing lilt of your friend Robin.
“Hey, Robin,” you smiled, sitting back against your pillows.
“You don’t call, you don’t write, I’m starting to feel insulted, Y/N!” came a voice from the background.
You laughed, hearing Eddie’s complaints.
“I haven’t called for two weeks, not two years,” you chastised him.
“It’s been too long either way,” Robin said, “Oh the kiddos want to say hi.”
“Hi!”
“Y/N I miss you!”
“Come home already!”
“Hi Y/N!”
A chorus of mixed voices were faint over the line, but by the volume, you assumed that Robin had held the receiver up for the group.
“Hi guys,” you chuckled, “Tell them I miss them too.”
“She says she misses you guys too,” you heard Robin say, “Not sure why when you drive us crazy here.”
You laughed again, feeling a pang of homesickness. As much hurt that Hawkins had left you with, you missed the great group of friends you had. You’d especially missed the phone calls lately.
“Two weeks though? I was going insane thinking you died or something!” Robin exclaimed dramatically.
“I’m sorry, finals are coming up and I’ve been cramming for them. I’ve been living in either a state of stress or exhaustion when I’m not studying or sleeping.”
“You’ll ace them, I know it,” Robin replied, sounding certain, “Besides, then you can come home to us!”
You fingered the necklace that you always wore, even now. It was a simple heart locket that rested coolly against your skin as if it always belonged there. Steve had given it to you for your one year anniversary. You didn’t have the strength to part with it and the comfort it brought you to still wear it was surprising, considering you tried hard not to think about Steve.
“I don’t know…” you hedged, “I haven’t quite figured out what I’m going to do for summer break. My roommate invited me to go to Tahiti with her and her family.”
“Well Tahiti doesn’t have us, missy.”
You could hear the sass in her voice and it made you chuckle.
“That’s true.”
“Do I have to call in reinforcements to convince you to come home?”
You didn’t even have a chance to respond before you heard the chorus of voices pleading and begging with you.
“Please!” Max and El.
“Yes come home we miss you!” Dustin.
“Hawkins sucks with out you!” Lucas.
“I think I forget what you even look like, it’s been so long.” Mike.
“Please come home for the summer?” Will.
“Honestly, who’s gonna keep this kids in line if it isn’t you?” Eddie.
Robin knew your weak spot, that’s for sure.
“Well?” Robin pressed, coming back on the line.
“Okay, okay. I guess I’m coming home for summer break,” you relented.
You had to hold the receiver away from your ear at the shrieks and whoops of joy that came from the other end.
“You won’t regret it, I promise,” you could hear the smile in Robin’s voice.
“Hey, Robin? Could I talk to you alone for a moment?”
You heard her murmur something to the others and you heard a door click, so you assumed she’d moved to a more private place.
“If you’re going to ask how Steve is, he’s the same as always.”
You sighed.
“I’m that predictable, huh?”
“Pretty much,” she answered baldly.
“As much as I hate it, I still care about him,” you replied glumly.
“You don’t hate it, Y/N,” Robin said gently, “Honestly, I’d be more concerned if you didn’t care about him still.”
“Is he…seeing anyone?” you asked, almost afraid of the answer.
Out of the handful of times you’d asked Robin how Steve had been doing, you’d never asked if he was dating. But now, knowing you were returning to Hawkins in a few short weeks, you found yourself curious. You told yourself you were just preparing for the worst in case you ended up seeing him with Nancy or worse, another girl.
“If you mean Nancy, nah. That never happened. She’s still with Jonathan,” she answered nonchalantly, like she was giving you the latest weather report, “And before you ask, there’s no other girl either. He’s practically turned into a monk and it’s weird.”
You didn’t know how to digest all that information, so you did what you did best: ignore it.
“How’s work going?” you asked her, twirling the cord of the phone around your finger.
“If you think I didn’t notice your swift change of subject, I did. But since you’re my best friend, I’ll overlook it,” she huffed, “It’s going alright. Nothing exciting.”
You spent the next hour on the phone chatting with her about anything and everything. By the time you’d hung up the phone, your wariness about returning to Hawkins had dissipated.
It would do you good to see your friends.

It was Friday night and Steve couldn’t find any of his friends anywhere.
Nor could he get ahold of them.
He’d tried all the usual spots after he’d closed up after his shift at Family Video. He tried the mall, the arcade, the diner, even the Wheeler’s house—where the gang usually congregated. No luck.
Before he’d left work, he’d tried calling Robin. Then Eddie. Then Dustin. He even tried the Sinclair’s house and Max. Either they didn’t pick up or their respective families had told him they weren’t there.
He was absolutely mystified, especially when he found them all at Dustin’s house, having a movie night. Without him.
He was trying not to be hurt as he loved movie night with his friends.
“What are all you guys doing here and why didn’t I get an invite?” he frowned, “Also, I called you before I left work and you didn’t answer!”
He pointed an accusatory finger at Dustin who shrugged.
“Sorry, dude. We just got here.”
“Where have you been?” Steve asked, glancing around at them.
They all avoided his gaze and his suspicions rose.
“We had some errands to run,” Eddie shrugged, nonchalantly.
“Errands,” Steve repeated, dubiously.
They all gave him noncommittal shrugs and grunts.
“So were you just going to casually forget to invite me for movie night?” he folded his arms over his chest, giving them what they teasingly called his parental glare.
“We couldn’t, okay?” Lucas said, shrugging.
He was even more confused.
“What do you mean you couldn’t?”
“We promised we wouldn’t,” Robin clarified, though it cleared up nothing at all for him.
“Because we wanted to spend a night with Y/N and she wouldn’t have come if you were here,” Max snapped, fire in her eyes, “I haven’t seen her in a year, none of us have and I’ll be dammed if I let you ruin me seeing the best big sister I’ve never have just because you were an asshole that broke her heart. You may have suffered, but so have we because we miss our friend.”
His head was reeling. You were here? In Hawkins? How did he not know that?
“She’s here?” he asked, finding it hard to breathe.
“Well not yet, but-”
Dustin’s reply was cut off by the sound of the front door shutting.
“Sorry I’m late guys! I stopped by the store to grab some boxes of popcorn so we can-”
Your words faltered as quickly as you froze in place, seeing who was standing in the middle of the Henderson’s living room. You’d been insistent that you didn’t want to see Steve, but now that he was here…you were kinda glad.
Steve’s heart stopped. He was sure of it. There was no oxygen reaching his brain or his lungs. Nothing mattered but seeing you. You looked incredible, like you always did. You had that effortless beauty that he loved because you never truly grasped how beautiful he thought you were—are. Your lips were parted in a surprised “oh”, but the word never made its way past your lips.
My god, your lips. He missed them so much. Obviously he missed you in general, but he never realized how for granted he took the kisses shared with you. Whether it was gentle, passionate kisses, searing, desire filled ones or even the perfunctory peck when leaving or arriving, he realized more than ever in that moment how much he missed kissing you.
Apparently, he’d lost the ability to speak as well as he just stared, dumbfounded at you. You hadn’t changed much in a year, though your hair was now shorter, like you’d just recently cut it. He loved it, it brought even more attention to your pretty face.
You had an obscene amount of microwave popcorn boxes in the grocery bags in your hands—then again with this crowd it was like feeding 50 people, not eight.
“Hi,” you whispered, still stunned by his presence.
“Hi,” he whispered back.
He wanted to tell you that he regretted breaking up with you.
He wanted to tell you that he missed you so fucking much.
He wanted to tell you that letting you go was the worst thing he ever did, that he needed you in his life, by his side, so much.
He wanted to tell you how many times he’d drove past your house in the last year, pain slicing his chest like an ice blade ripping it open. He knew it was all his fault you were gone, but somehow, driving by your house was as peaceful as it made him full of sorrow. While you’d been gone, that’d been all he had left of you, that small sliver.
But now, here you were and he wasn’t going to waste the opportunity.
When his eyes landed on the silver heart locket on your chest, he lost all pretenses of holding it together as tears sprung to his eyes. You’d kept the necklace he’d given you. You were still wearing it.
His eyes met yours and you saw the realization in his. He saw the affirmation in yours. You’d kept wearing his necklace around your neck, quite literally a symbol of you still having his heart.
“Whenever you’re ready,” he said hesitantly, “I have a lot of things to say that I think you should hear.”
You said nothing, but it was the small smile that gave him hope. He would hold on to that thread for as long as it took you because if he was ever lucky enough to win you back, he was never going to let you go again.
After all, somehow, your road had led you back to him.

If you didn’t know what Zionism was then I think it’s worth acknowledging the role propaganda, brainwashing and indoctrination play in what’s happened too. And I want to preface this by saying my intention isn’t defence of Noah, but nuance, because people seem to be missing a large chunk and treating him like he’s a 50 year old that should know better.
He is swimming in propaganda, all his life. His parents, his community, his peers. He is easily influenced. Picture the Oct 7 event but with him surrounded by parents reacting and saying things on pure emotion (because a fact is that everybody knows somebody in Is*ael, the Jewish community isn’t large worldwide. It is safe to assume they were upset.) any corrupt people in his religious community - it would have been surrounding everywhere he turned. He gets sad when people are sad. Dangerous time for more misinformation to be fed to him. Really I am curious to know about his sister being around too.
People say he can still educate himself - and I agree yes he can and should, but they are dismissing how deep propaganda goes. This happening did not surprise me. Him doubling down is surprising me, upset me, but I still think growth can happen over time. Him taking down posts was a good sign but he is obviously pressured by those around him and I hope he grows a spine. (Does that sound familiar, stan world? Feeling pressured to do what others do so you don’t get thrown away by your peers/people you like? He is so close to your own very young age, you know that right?)
Those 30 year olds with their stickers have 10 years on him. He met many of them on the propaganda mess that was the trip his parents set up for him (likely his ‘birthright’ trip) that uses young people to promotes the ‘country’ by using the religion he cares about. Because that’s what he was fed his whole entire life. He didn’t do any of this in 2021 when the last big attack happened. That trip and the bullshit people he met really did damage. That is not me excusing his responsibility btw, but it is a valid analysis.
Shawn, Brett and the Duffers are double+ his age too and they disappoint me way more than Noah. They feed him more lies because he trusts them! They should know better than Noah who was recently 17, and 14 and a kid. Especially Shawn who is close to his family.
Its not new information that he needs a spine. He needs friends that care about him. He needs to not please people. Noah is responsible for his actions but his indoctrination plays a part that is so obvious.
You might be confused why I sound like I criticize but sound like I defend too. That is the nuance. That is called not bowing to people (kids!) in a fandom prioritizing the wrong thing. Ya. 🙏🏻 on God Palestine will be free, but he does not have ‘blood on his hands’ people need to take away such intense focus like that on one person who is not even a politician. They sound ridiculous and not true allies! A real ally would not be prioritizing getting likes on hate tweets and posts, and not even discussing the genocide. Noah is a speck in this, it is just loud on your Internet side.
I've listened to a lot of stories from anti-zionist Jewish people and almost all of them have the common factor of indoctrination and propaganda that has surrounded them their whole life. I definitely agree that's the case with Noah. It's tragic but it unfortunately doesn't excuse his actions.
Agreed that the Stranger Things of it all is irrelevant in the scope of the real violence going on and that people should direct their anger to do something that actually helps Palestinians (like calling representatives, educating yourself, joining BDS led boycotts, etc) instead of just hating on celebrities or boycotting one of the most popular shows.
I appreciate and agree with the nuance. It all still sucks though lol.

Idk if you’re the person to send this to but like
The whole thing with Murray’s comments and Nancy and Jon getting together…. It is set up in such a way that it can be read as a situation where an ambitious teenage girl was pressured into what she was “supposed” to be. Nancy was told by a man that she respected and who took her seriously (and was the ONLY one to do so, so Murray gained an untold amount of trust from Nancy immediately, and the show just brushing off their relationship is such a loss but ok), that in order to be her real self she must dump Steve. Now Murray was just poking at two teenagers with a metaphorical stick to see what would they do. Understandable position, as a younger sister haver love doing that also (not with romantic feelings though but Murray was never meant to be ethical). I doubt that what the comment meant for him can be easily translated into what it meant for Nancy (let alone Jon, who thinks that he is better than most people and that he is definitely better than Steve, so I imagine he was nodding along). But he did influence her into becoming an investigative journalist. Like Murray with him taking Nancy seriously influenced her into two major life altering decisions (career and significant other). Like wow. And they never interacted again! Fucking hate st continuity.
Like Nancy dumping Steve because Murray told her to do so is a major thing. It’s BAD for jancy. Before s4 I thought that they were not mentioning it because jancy happened and was the endgame. But with them toying with stancy and likely knowing that they might toy with stancy all along??? Why did they not leave it open to interpretation. It’s such a juicy storyline, it shows the magnitude of the influence that you can have on a teenage girl, it’s beautiful, it’s painful, it’s the stuff of a real love-triangle (which is hard to make interesting but that would make it interesting!!!). Why did they write it then??? Whyyyyyy?????

I am much more of a murray fan when he is being a weird gay conspiracy uncle guy and isn't matchmaking, it must be said.
He and Nancy have the potential for a really interesting dynamic! It really is a shame we don't get to see more of it tbh. and you are so right in what his comment meaning to him and what it meant to Nancy and Jon separately would be so different! I don't know if Nancy would necessarily feel pressured by it, (though I wouldn't say she wasn't, either) but maybe it would vindicate something of how she was feeling about her relationship with Steve at the time and her feelings for Jonathan? Like a "oh this man I respect and who takes me seriously also thinks Jonathan is better for me, thinks I should go for it. Maybe I will..." kind of thing?
And lol yeah so true Jon just had his own conception of himself and Steve and their relationships with Nancy confirmed by Murray. he just kinda got...permission? I guess? to make a move on Nancy even though he was the one bringing up Steve both times he's mentioned on the road trip.
Totally see where you're coming from of Murray's influence not being mentioned because you figured Jancy was endgame, makes sense (if boring) to not question it if it doesn't need to be addressed as an issue because the pairing is canon for the rest. But now the teen love triangle has been brought back.... you're so right it is bad for Jancy. It brings up stuff about them that a lot of people (especially the Duffers!) don't want to deal with or acknowledge. Though I don't think they were planning the whole time to bring stancy back I think that sort of happened because the duffers unfortunately don't know what to do with Nacy if she doesn't have a boy to look at and Steve when he isn't pining over Nancy.
There's not enough time left to fully and satisfyingly delve into the issues between the original older teens, especially since some of those issues aren't treated as issues. It would be interesting to see, and also so so juicy, the complicated relationship they have with each other because of the UD etc, but I don't think a whole lot of interesting canon material will come from it (though that doesn't mean fan content can't!!) just based on how other romantic relationships and their dynamics with each other have been treated through the show. tbh I think maybe s5 will tease the love triangle but ultimately either end up with them all single (my preference) or with Jancy still together.

I am very worried about Noah's mental health, he deleted his YouTube channel, he deleted almost all of his tiktoks, he deleted several photos from Instagram and before he followed like 3,000 people on Instagram and now he follows 570 people, and I think they forced Millie to delete the photos that she had on Instagram with him, and in the old ones that he shows he is not tagged and even Noah has deleted the likes of the posts of Millie, others of the cast and also of the Duffers, even Noah deleted the likes of his sister's recent posts.
But I hope the cast is there for him on set, because they all still follow Noah on Instagram and Noah follows them, but it hurts me how people keep telling him to commit suicide, and the haters laughing at the idea of him having anxiety and depression because of that rumor about his mental health. And that they want Will to die in a horrible way, I hope the Duffers DON'T give the satisfaction to those psychopaths, those haters think they are better people but they are not, they are worse, and they are just cowards who hide in their phones and they are FAKE activists who don't care about Palestine but only about celebrities.
you’re probably be overthinking this a bit 😔 i understand being worried bc it’s unusual for noah to be quiet but i think he just wanted a social media detox, and for some reason that includes deleting or archiving many posts. i don’t think millie’s deleted anything? her insta is mainly used for promo and some personal pics of her and jake. the bts pics from s4 with noah are still up. also, how do you even check likes and stuff like that? i thought insta got rid of that option years ago, lol.
of course the duffers aren’t going to rewrite the plot and kill will off just to appease a small portion of fans who claim they won’t be watching anyway. i very much doubt they’re punishing noah in any capacity so don’t believe any rumours about what’s going on with noah on set.
also if there is something wrong, i don’t think noah’s mum and sister would be carrying on as usual. especially chloe with her tiktoks. people who hate noah want you to assume the worst, they think it’s funny and they enjoy the attention. don’t give them the satisfaction. is it possible that noah is struggling mentally? yes but he isn’t alone and for all we know, being offline is helping him. if he comes back, he will when he’s ready 💚

Rick Conroy's Recent Rentals:
Romancing the Stone (1/2/3)
As a refresher, this is a shot from 4x02: Vecna's Curse. Robin, Max, Dustin and Steve are using the Family Video's database to look through the most recent rentals of all the Ricks in town as hints for which one Reefer Rick is, so that they can find his address to track down Eddie.
Unfortunately for them, the selection here for this specific Rick didn't give off 'reefer' vibes and so they moved onto the next one. Luckily for us, the Duffers are nerds and this could be important.
While there are several Rick's they skim through, this one in particular had me intrigued. And so I will be analyzing these films, as well as whether or not they could have been inspiration for s4 or whether they may even be predicting events still yet to happen in s5.
3. Romancing the Stone (1984)
The plot of Romancing the Stone revolves around an American Romance/Adventure novelist, Joan Wilder, who has to travel to Colombia to save her sister. While there, she gets stranded in the jungle, though 'luckily' she runs into an American exotic bird smuggler, Jack T. Colton, who has a lot of experience in said jungle and whose basically her only hope in finding and saving her sister.
What makes this movie probably the most interesting out of the three, is that it's directed by Rob Zemeckis. If you don't know, Zemeckis also directed Back to the Future (1985).
In fact, if you look close, you'll see an interesting parallel that makes my explanation for this analysis a whole lot easier to transition into.
Basically, Zemeckis revealed later in life that the success from his film Romancing the Stone was what allowed him to make Back to the Future in the first place.
And so this just makes this iconic Marty McFly outfit kind of hilarious when you realize it's actually paying homage to another character.
Which means that this....
Could also mean this...
Not only do the costumes check out in terms of us being able to potentially associate Will with this character Jack, but the actual context of the story also makes it hard not to.
Jack is framed as someone who has way more knowledge and experience within this jungle in comparison to the protagonist, Joan, whose only ever explored adventures in her writing, not in reality.
Remind you of anyone?
Basically, I think that the reference to this film could be hinting at Mike and Will in the upside down together.
We know there have been a lot of hints leading up to that potentially in s5, though right now we don't know what it will for sure look like (whose going first? Mike or Will?), it's very likely to happen in some shape or form.
I do think that this film could act as a simple reference just like Sixteen Candles, with the meaning linked to ST being easy to spot and point out, Ie. Jack/Joan represent Will/Mike.
The main thing in this film that I think is an undeniable parallel, is this mention of a treasure map that Joan is planning to use as ransom to get back her sister. This map is labeled in big block letters with 'El Corazon' AKA the heart.
I obviously don't think we're going to be dealing with any lost treasure in ST like we see in this film, just like I don't think all the Lord of the Rings homage means we're going to see Will destroy a ring.
We're talking about both basic and complex parallels here, happening with hundreds of films/series at once, at different levels, and how the Duffers manage to make all of that fit organically to create a unique story on its own.
We all know how the heart plays a big role in s4 and what is likely to follow in s5 (the painting!!!). I do think this homage could be quite simple, but it could also be deeper because, again I am not satisfied with simple, as some of you probably know by now.
I also want to try to come to a close with this little 3 part series, which is easy to do because in regards to Will's character, it does feel like a sort of arc that could definitely play out going into the final season:
Sixteen Candles --> birthdagate
Teen Wolf --> memorygate/twelvegate
Romancing the Stone --> apocalypse-byler
My working theory rn is that Will is going to be in danger right at the start of s5, which we already saw foreshadowed at the very end of s4. There is this unspoken understanding that Will's connection to Vecna could mean bad things to come for Will, maybe even that destroying Vecna once in for all could also affect (kill) Will.
It's likely there is going to be discussion about the option of using Will's connection to find Vecna, and everyone sort of predictably being against it, bc of that unspoken understanding this could end very badly for him. But it's also possible that Will would be willing to do what he has to, even if it means putting himself in danger, especially if it means saving everyone. And simultaneously it would make sense for him to leave out all the details about his connection to Vecna as it starts to get worse, all while conflict between him and El and Mike is coming to a head, where Vecna is showing him things that are bringing him to a really low point, ie. everyone forgot your birthday, your friends/family don't love you, yada yada.
Then I think something is going to happen that is going to cause Will to be separated from everyone again... However, I don't think this going to last for more than one-two episodes. And it's likely we would see what he's up to in that time. This would make it parallel to s1 to an extent, but not to the extreme that we never see Will during that time or that he's separated for the course of the entire season. Just enough that it feels like deja vu basically.
And yes I do think it's possible Will has time powers. Though I don't want to make any crazy claims... I'm going to.
Basically, I think that Vecna would greatly benefit from making Will feel like it was better that he was never found in the first place (I feel like my life started that day we found you in the woods). And so what he's doing by bringing Will to this low point of hopelessness, is whats going to lead Will to essentially reverse him being found after going missing... That could benefit Vecna greatly presumably. Could it possibly even have the capacity to act as a reset for him of sorts? Maybe. And also, couldn't Vecna play this up to Will as him being able to save everyone and let them be happy, without him, bc he's at a point where he's made himself believe that he deserves it (FUCKING CRYING JUST THINKING ABOUT IT)
And so time passes (A TIME JUMP). Maybe it takes us to the 5 year anniversary since Will's disappearance (1+ years of our Will stuck in the upside down)... But something isn't right, something is missing. Something's wrong. And I think that we would see the characters figuring it out fairly quickly after the time jump is presented to us (anniversary affect). I think Mike in particular could figure it out first even (along with Joyce and Jonathan, hence the s5 foreshadowing intended with this promo), making him a quick target of Vecna, also contributing to him joining Will in the upside down fairly early on, post time-jump (also post Mike's boyliker realization, but Will won't know that...).
This is just a theory! But it does have a lot of interesting things surrounding it that make it at least plausible to me.
First of all, it reminds me so much of s2 and the whole Zombie boy arc with Will. He was in the upside down for a week and got dubbed that nickname. And yet now it makes me wonder if that could have been hinting at something more prominent still to come related to Will and his arc (we know he has this tendency to predict things with his art...).
This also ties into the whole controversy surrounding Will using a gun in s5. There's been this talk forever, how it doesn't make sense for Will to ever use a gun bc that's not like his character at all, as he's been shown to be quite scared and so it doesn't make sense for him to suddenly be comfortable with using a gun in a high stress situation.
However, what makes this sort of ironic to me is the literal narrative principle, Chekgov's gun, which states that every element in a story must be necessary, and irrelevant elements should be removed. Alternatively-explained, suppose a writer features a gun in a story; if the writer features it, there must be a reason for it, such as it being fired sometime later in the plot.
Remind you of anyone?
This means that starting the story from the very beginning with Will knowing how to use a gun and trying to protect himself with it, but failing to do so, followed by four seasons of him being scared frozen in situations of confrontation... Means that the gun is bound to go off!
Will using a gun in s5 in this scenario would also be supported by Will going through quite a transformation after being in upside down circumstances for 1+ years...
Quite frankly, I don't think it make sense for Will to be this character that is known for freezing and being powerless the entire series, all the way up until the very end. It makes a lot more sense that this final time around, after seeing that for 4 straight seasons, we are going to see a big change in him, which tends to happen to people that go through traumatic experiences and yet still manage to adapt and survive.
Will after 1+ years in the upside down probably knows how to shoot a gun and probably is more sure of himself and less skitish than s1-4 Will.
Also, this provides a lot of character development that Noah gets to have the affordance of exploring as an actor. Like, let's give Noah some wiggle room here to show off what he's capable of for Will's character, which is so much! We know Noah jokes about wanting Will to suffer immensely because it's fun for him to play and act out, but more than anything it's also challenging in a good way. And this would really test the limits of Noah's abilities, which is why I do think it would be a wise choice narratively to make his characters evolution well rounded for the overall story.
Will going from what we expect him to always be like, to being something thats much the same in the important ways (he's still Will obviously), while also being different (see what i did there) as a result of him facing all of his fears in order to survive.
And it also makes the official battle in the end, of him finally facing Vecna off, alongside El and the party, that much more satisfying and believable as an outcome. Because by that point he will be ready, just like they'll all be ready after having finally come together despite everything.
This theory also reminds me a lot of Verse 3 in Time After Time, which is the only verse left out of the scene in 2x09 at the snowball....
There has been speculation these lyrics could be foreshadowing what's to come, and so it is interesing to think about this, with all these other theories related to Will's upcoming arc:

Also, I just like to think that this reference specifically to Romancing the Stone confirms not only apocalypse-byler, AND Will Byers with a gun but also ponytail-Mike in s5???..
Oh and maybe even the highly anticipated Murray & byler confrontation, bc why not...
AGAIN this is just a theory. Don't come at me! Make your own crack theories it's fun and we can all go crazy together!
Honestly I hope I'm wrong bc I would love to be surprised (I can't wait to be surprised regardless).
And yet that wont stop me from trying to figure it out with what they're willing to give us in the mean time!

I'll try to be respectful. I'm a Mileven. I genuinely don't understand why you guys hate Mike's monologue. The only reason I can think of is because he said he loves El and not Will. It doesn't make sense in any other point of view.
YES it's bad that his only function in the show is being El's girlfriend, he deserves to be a layered character just like the other ones (but this is what he is, so...). YES it is also bad that Will doesn't have a love interest at the end of the show. I don't like Will as a character but yeah, he deserves to be in a relationship just like the other straight characters, it would be homophobic if he end up single. But destroy Mileven's development for him? That's really fucked up. Mike doesn't have good references in romance. His references are: his parents (they don't love each other) and his sister (her relationship with Steve). He is insecure in his relationship with Eleven because he's scared of losing her, he said that.
His insecurity: not being able to love her enough the way she deserves, like his dad with his mom and Nancy with Steve. He wants to make SURE he does love El.
The fear of losing her: saying he loves her and at the end of the day it's not true... The result >>> lose El.
The monologue is about it: Mike is not afraid anymore of losing El because this isn't an option. YES it was Will that helped him saying the monologue, but Will is literally his best friend, this is what friends do. El needed to hear every word that Mike said. She was able to save Max because her boyfriend was there for her. Also, Will is kind of done with Mike after the van scene, the band aid line tells a lot. His talk with Jonathan is also foreshadowing of Will moving on from Mike because Will saw how happy Mileven was and he could never have his sister's boyfriend (note: it's weird that you guys want him to date Mike when he's with El, it doesn't matter if he loved him first, he is now his brother in law, nothing will ever change that).
And El didn't talk with Mike because the Duffer brothers fucked up the end of the season after the 2 days later thing. Everyone knows that. I'm quite sure they will address Mike's monologue in season 5 and they will work as a team.
Thanks for the ask, I really appreciate it. I like to share our thoughts respectfully. I agree with you in some things and in others not, let me explain it.
I don't hate per se Mike's monologue. I just feel it was flat because they needed to talk more about their insecurities, like you comment above, it's clearly that this relationship bring them insecurities to both of them. And they need to solve them talking, and not in an improvised monologue in a risk situation. I am not one of the person that believes that Mike was lying in his monologue, at least not intentionally, sometimes he contradicted himself but it's because he was just saying what he thought El needed to hear.
The way I see it, Mil3ven had been built up for two seasons, and the last two seasons they're showing us how these two don't work together. Mike ditching his friends to be with El, and lying to them, also he trying to act more cool and mature with her, and stop playing games that makes him happy. And then in s4 we have this big conflict that Mike can't say ily, and how that bring insecurities to El, also she lied in her letters about how she was doing, and created a new persona. Also Mike made her feel like a monster because of how he reacted when she hit Angela, and he wasn't there to reassure her. Yes he said in his monologue that he loved her in her bad days, but he didn't show it. That's a problem. I don't think Mike stopped loving her in that moment, it's just that he couldn't show it nor give the love that El wanted in that moment.
Another big problem in their relationship, it's that Mike views her as a superhero, and that makes him insecure. I agree with you when you said that Mike is scared of losing her, that's true!! And it was one of the reasons that he couldn't say ily. But it's also true that he feels like he is just a random nerd, and he can't be at the same level as her, so he thinks, she deserves better than him. And this is related with his insecurity of not being needed by her. He always wants to protect and save his loved ones, but he knows that he can't bring that to El because she's the superhero, so he feels useless in that relationship.
I disagree that his insecurity is not loving her enough. He never implied that, it's just that he is scared of losing her if she realizes that she doesn't need him. And he thought if he said that words, that day would hurt more. (This is a misbelief and he will be proven wrong in s5 when El break up with him, and realize that it won't hurt as he had thought. We see a glimpse of this outcome at the end of the season when El isn't talking to him a lot and relying on him. Mike, the one who wants to be needed by her, doesn't look that affected by it.)
I completely disagree that El was able to save Max thanks to Mike. Actually with his monologue, El lost, Max died at first, and El was able to bring her back to life thanks to the memories that they had together, not for Mike's words. I don't think that Mike's monologue made her lose, but his words weren't enough. El's journey is about self-love and self-acceptance. Knowing that she can't be defined as monster nor superhero. Her worth doesn't come from her powers, nor her duty is to save the world. She needs to embrace that to became stronger, she doesn't need Mike's love.
I disagree, Will isn't moving on from Mike. The van scene wasn't the resolution of their conflict. Will's character arc is about saying the truth about his feelings, to complete his journey he has to be honest with Mike. And the painting has to be bring up again to clear things. And the scene with Jonathan is another scene that show how Will feels sad when he looks at them together, he is still yearning and pining for Mike. So, to me it says the opposite of what you said.
I mean it's okay if you find weird that Mike will date now El's brother, but I don't think El would mind tbh.
And the last part, sometimes I think that you're right. I have thought that too, that they just fucked up many character's arc. But if you see everything with context, it feels intentional. They didn't write a scene where they talk about the monologue, but neither a scene where El wake up, so we could see their emotional reunion. They did write that that they weren't talking a lot in the last two days. They wanted to show us that, so it's an important detail that we had to notice. And they also wrote Will confiding in Mike, just to show us the contrast with El shutting the door at his face (literally and metaphorically lmao).
And you said that they will work together in s5. They are showing us that the ones who will work together are Mike and Will, that's why they have an important conversation in the last episode. He reassured him that they will kill Vecna (of course it will be team work with the other characters and not just them, but this scene is a direct parallel with s2 when Mike never left his side). And of course the last shot where Mike and Will are together and El is in the front.
In conclusion, at the end of the season we see that Mike and Will are closer than they were in the beginning. And El and Mike aren't that close even if he already told her what she wanted to hear. So, no, that monologue wasn't the solution to their conflict.
Edit: I forgot to tell you that Mike isn’t written just as a love interest, he is more nuanced. Like Will said in the van scene, Mike is the leader, the one who inspire the party, and I am confident that we will see this role again in s5.

Hey, I know you do some movie analysis and one of the movies I recently watched is “The Good Son” which is on the inspo board. Spoilers, but the plot is literally about a “child psychopath” named Henry who murdered his infant brother in the backstory and in the story proper tries to murder his sister and especially hates his mother for catching on to his troubling behavior and for trying to have him institutionalized (so he tries to kill her in the climax but he dies himself after his mother concludes that he was born evil and the movie lands on that message). I am curious as to what yours and aemiron’s take on this is movie is because of how clearly this is inspiration for Vecna’s backstory and just how contradictory it’s messaging is to what you guys interpret/theorize about it. I’m on anon because I don’t want to get ostracized for even suggesting that Vecna was born evil (I disagree with that message but I’m being neutral on whether the duffers agree with me), and this is why I decided to just ask the experts.
Personally, I haven’t seen The Good Son, so I can’t speak in depth about that movie’s specifics.
However I think it’s important to remember that inspiration ≠ direct copy. We should also keep in mind that there are a multitude of contradictory plot points in Henry’s backstory.
For one: He physically could not have killed Alice (I’ve made this point several times across the past months). Alice was still clearly alive before Victor went into his trance. As we know from later in the season, given that it was a critical and heavily focused on part of Nancy’s plan: Vecna can’t do anything else while he’s trancing someone. Thus, Henry could not have killed Alice, since she was still alive when Victor enters his trance.
Point blank. He could not have killed Alice.
Second: He never says he despised his mother. He says his mother despised him. Very different things.
Third: There are a multitude of signs that Virginia was less than stellar as a mother (including but not limited to whatever the hell her bathtub vision was referring to [shudders] egh), but relatively few signs that Henry was anything but weird. Virginia was planning to ship Henry off to MARTIN BRENNER at a DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY MKULTRA LABORATORY. I mean, my god. Henry was twelve. Victor describes Henry as sensitive, the same way Joyce describes Will as sensitive.
Fourth: As I’ve detailed here:
Henry doesn’t meet any of the markers for conduct disorder (child psychopathy doesn’t exist, anon).
It’s also important to remember that the Duffers love a good twist…which is what I absolutely believe they’re setting us up for.
The Good Son feels more like an inspiration for this cover story to disguise the twist, if you ask me.
We’ve only been shown the briefest, most disjointed glimpse into Henry’s childhood. On the surface, before you actually study the scenes, it may seem like “oh he’s a psycho killer monster, that’s easy and simple”…But that’s NOT what Stranger Things has ever been about. It wasn’t like that for Billy, or El (who, for her age, has a FAR higher kill count than Henry at the same age), or any of them. Everyone is a product of their circumstances, and there are no innate monsters. Just people.
I mean this with all the kindness in the world: You have to actually watch what’s happening in the scenes, Anon. There’s a ton of shit that doesn’t add up.
You have to pull back the curtain, Anon. This is the “common interpretations aren’t the right ones” show. They literally tell you to look “too deep” in S1-3. Henry’s story is no different. Henry is not exempt.

I am once again asking for a Stranger Things 5 plotline where Chrissy’s lil brother - who was only ever acknowledged in the family portrait - starts high school.
And he is sad and lonely lil sheep, if you will. who is depressed because he misses his sister, and because he his parents are his parents.
Dustin tries to take him under his wing and fulfill his promise to Eddie, but the kid his weary because as far as he’s concerned Hellfire is responsible for his sister’s murder.
It all culminates in Eddie’s name being cleared and lil bro joining Hellfire and such.
Idk maybe the kid finds Chrissy’s diary which mentions the Vecna visions, and how she was going to reach out to Eddie, and maybe perhaps we can get Grace back in flashbacks and see Chrissy as the best big sister As A Treat.
Duffers. I know you said you’re avoiding new characters, but technically lil dude already appeared in a painting.

will (and possibly max??) having powers and to use them alongside his sister el to defeat evil. i keep imagining a frame of all three of them with their hands out doing that yell as they take down the big bad of s5
max waking up, but also being loved and accepted for her likely permanent blindness and the duffer bros not pussying out on giving her a permanent disability

Hi! Feel free to ignore this if you don’t wanna subject yourself to possible ✨discourse✨ but I’ve been rewatching s2 of stranger things and I know it’s your fave so I’m just wondering what are your thoughts on the list sister episode/kali? Personally I think it (and kali esp) gets a lot of unnecessary hate. I think the kali plot had a lot of potential and I’m sad they just. Act like it never happened in later seasons :/
i am not a big fan of the lost sister as an episode BUT i think kali had a lot of potential as a character. i think where they episode didn’t land for me was …. literally every character except kali. i hate her little gang so much like i truly despise them. compared to her and el they just came off so shallow and forgettable, the humor was awful, and the duffers trying to earnestly write edgy badass characters will literally always be a miss unless they make them secretly a huge dork like eddie was. also the timing of that episode is a huge reason people don’t like it i think—going from the absolute BANGER of an episode that 2.06 the spy was, literally cutting it on a cliffhanger of hopper seeing the demodogs start to come through the gate, and spending an entire solo episode with el that was very slowly paced and had a lot of comedic filler scenes was just an awful idea. i was so frustrated by it and i still am when i rewatch because 2.06 built up so much tension, like it was truly riveting tv, and then it just immediately cut that tension and made you sit there longing for a resolution for an hour. i do think kali’s plotline with el was good—i think el being tempted with this lifestyle of revenge and using her powers for like a Cause before ultimately deciding against it was a really good avenue to explore. i do think the way the fandom tends to characterize kali and el’s relationship in fanon very much….glosses over what makes it an interesting dynamic. people say they love kali but they mischaracterize her so bad!!! she isn’t like el’s fun nice older sister who paints her nails or whatever, she very much wanted el to follow in the path she chose and went so far as to show el a literal personification of her abuser telling her she’ll never heal in order to convince her. kali is a morally gray!! and that’s GOOD!! she was interesting and different from other previously established characters and i hate that the fandom ignores it. this answer to this ask is so disjointed but yeah these are my lost sister thoughts <3 overall i don’t think it was a well executed episode and it should’ve been placed somewhere else in the season, but it had interesting ideas

The interactions between Max and Steve (sibling duo) have always been some of my favorite scenes to watch and we even got to see a lot of them together in Vol. 1!
Why the Duffer brothers love ripping joy away from me with that 2 day skip— I am not sure.
I want to know exactly how Steve reacted and what he did after he found out about Max. Since we didn’t get that, here are some head cannons:
-Steve was one of the first to get to the hospital after everything had gone down.
-He sat by Lucas and was a shoulder to cry on for him, brought him food, and word puzzles/board games for the two of them to do.
-Steve would bring flowers every couple of days because he would feel bad/helpless that there wasn’t much else he could do.
-Steve’s terrified that since she’ll most likely be blind, he won’t get to see her small smile as she looks out the window at the scenery in the backseat of his car.
-He makes a mixtape full of Kate Bush and some of his favorites for when she wakes up (he likes to play the tape in the room when it’s just them two and sing along)
-When Steve isn’t helping with the aid organization in the school gym with Robin, he takes Dustin with him to the hospital so Dustin isn’t alone to grieve by himself.
-Steve tells her countless stories (even though he knows she probably can’t hear them) of his high school days and how he’s made a fool of himself; his best and worst moments all out in the open.
-He falls asleep in the chair beside her bed with his hand over hers, just in case she wakes up.
-Steve doesn’t dare to read the letter that she wrote him because to him, if he does, that means she’s really gone and he can’t bring himself to think like that.
-After his shifts at Family Video, he brings Robin along and they watch a movie late into the night in the hospital room.
-They both end up falling asleep and a nurse has to shoo them out.
-He admits that her and El are like the little sisters he never had and he admits he doesn’t mind braiding hair all that much and gossiping about the other boys.
-Steve tells her that he’s so proud of her because he knows no one has told her in a while and if there’s even a chance she can hear him, she should know.

SO MUCH i want to say about it. so many great moments. oh my god. final girl karen wheeler my QUEEN. and the camp scene at the end, witg all the reunions- mr. clark!!! lucas and his parents!!! KALI!!! god im SO EXCITED to see what you do with kali man, i loved that part of season 2 and kind of hated how she was just...never mentioned again... and seeing her in your season 5 makes me so happy!!!!

actually. confession! karen’s plot was like 80% of the reason i decided to do a script at all, bc i had such a solid s5 vision in my head for her but i couldn’t figure out how to work it into a byler-pov fic. i was thinking about doing separate related ficlets originally, but then i got even more ideas, and the scripts were born!
and yeah, i’m super excited about all the reunions!! i was going to wait for the finale until some of them, like mr. clark, but i figured i’d just get them all done in one big reunion extravaganza. the plan was always to include kali somehow—i want to make sure i close out the arcs of all characters in the show, like terry and the police, etc! and el needs her sister back💗

thank you so so so much for the comment about the hive mind (and for your notes on the fic as well)! i know that understandably this chapter got overshadowed very much by byler, but the restoration/decolonization of the upside down is a really important theme to me, and i’m looking forward to writing it out. especially because (and i could be wrong about this) it’s not a route that i necessarily see the duffers taking, and i wanted to be able to do it justice.

I really am not sure if the Duffers are planning on making Byler canon right now. I've seen their Master Class lessons and they explicitly state that Mike's arc is about 'falling in love with El and concluding his arc'. Makes me think they really use Mike as a 'nerd fantasy self-insert' character, after all: The nerdy guy finds this special girl with superpowers and ends up with her aka the old 'sexy born yesterday' trope. I would like to think that's not the case and they'll conclude this Mike/El/Will dynamic in a better way but seeing their Master Class... I really do think Mike's character is just about that self-insert trope after all and the Duffers play into it.
Now it changes my perspective quite a bit because not only do we have a self-insert trope but they've also been planning Will to be gay and in love with Mike since S1... which plays right into the ''sad gay guy in love with his straight best friend'' trope. I used to like ST for not falling into tropes like this and hoped that they would actually do something better with them, but maybe we're just giving the Duffers too much credit after all.
I guess you can tag this as ''byler doubt'' but I really would want to hear your opinion on this.
NGL, I don't really pay attention to outside material, lmao. I don't care about what the Duffers say. I care about their show, like, what's actually in it. Since just because the Duffers are saying one thing doesn't mean that's what they're straightforwardly showing in the material. And if they think that to be the case, then they really are fools and don't know what they're writing at all :p it's still a point toward my favor since it just means I understand their narratives better than they do.
Most of my analysis is based on what the series' text has given us. And what it has given us is that Mike and El are at conflicting points in their narratives. Mike is at "superhero El" while El's S4 narrative is explicitly about not being that. And in S4, El did not say "I love you" back. Mike tells her ILY like nine times and neither she nor the show acknowledges that she was actually happy about it. Does she ever smile after hearing him say this? Does she even win against Henry? The burning Hawkins says no.
So, let's say that MiIeven is indeed the endgame ship with everything else still true. What could Mike do to get El to say she loves him back? Or what could El do to believe his ILY? El's narrative would have to disregard everything she has ever worked for learning about herself -- that she is a friend, she is a daughter, she is a sister, she is loved for something that isn't reliant on what she can do for others -- if the show is content with her staying with Mike "I'm in love with my superhero girlfriend who can fly and move mountains" Wheeler. The show would have to rescind basically everything they built her narrative to be.
If Mike has to prove himself again in S5 to earn El's ILY, he has to prove to El that he doesn't just see her as a superhero. Big ask considering that's what his entire arc in S4 was about. Big ask considering the final season is El needing -- not wanting -- to save the world again. The narrative has virtually prevented Mike from seeing her as anything but a superhero.
So now it's back to El again. So should we expect S5 El to learn that actually, being a superhero is great! Being taken away from her mom, being abused and experimented on in a lab for years so she could fight the commies and supernatural baddies that the lab itself actually inadvertently created was GOOD actually! because it means she became a superhero? just for Mike?
Like, at this point in the story, it's actually HARDER to commit to MiIeven as a natural conclusion of both their arcs than it is to make Byler endgame. El's narrative doesn't have to change if Byler is endgame. The audience knows Will is in love with Mike; the audience knows Mike loves Will (whether as a best friend or something else entirely). The only thing the show needs to do is to get Mike to understand his love has a romantic component. Like he doesn't have to change the way he perceives Will as a person at all the way he does for El, and Will literally has to do nothing. He's said his piece.

Sad thing is mileven isn’t even toxic 😭 their young finding their way in the world and they always make up when they fall out and work through their issues that’s not toxic it’s growth these delulu silly little girls who ship byler and think no couple argue are tripping!!!!!!
Now what would be toxic would be will dating his sisters would be ex and then bringing him round for dinner with the folks (Joyce&Hop) and then acting like Mike and El never dated 💀💀
well yea it's actually hard to call a ship toxic when you can see they're just kids/young teenagers and they're trying to be happy in their first relationship, we all know it's not easy.
also i feel like one of the main reasons why Will is feeling so bad about loving mike that way (except internalized homophobia) is the fact that he doesn't want to love him, not that way, he knows mike is not interested, he knows El really loves mike, AND he loves them both, he wants them to be happy and not ruin them? and we can clearly see it in s4. I really don't know what duffers are planning for him, I'm just happy that he will get his happy ending and that's all i need to know.
The thing that is confusing me, is why bylers are focusing on mileven so bad? why are they looking for the tiniest mistakes in their relationship, why are they analyzing every mileven kissing scene to find something wrong in that? What's the point? Can't u just focus on byler scenes instead? See that's the whole point. I'm not texting every byler shipper who's talking about "crazy together" scene that from Mike's pov it's about El, because why? am i going to feel better then? am i going to change someone's mind? no. The whole ship war is just sick😭😭
