listen. i know it's not 2014 anymore and i know it's just a throwaway line and that the russo brothers didnt intend for marvel action blockbuster captain america the winter soldier to become the tragic gay love story that never was but man. having steve say "it's kind of hard to find someone with shared life experience" in a conversation about romantic relationships right before the bucky reveal is so cruel. it's not just about steve and bucky obviously having the shared experience of being "out of time," it's the fact that they've both been stripped of their humanity in opposite directions. steve is a legend, he is an american hero and a national icon before he is a human being the same way that bucky is a weapon and a killing machine before he is a human being. steve knows that anyone who falls in love with him in the 21st century fell in love with captain america first, and that's just not him. but then the one person who knew him first and knew him best and loved him (not captain america, that little guy from brooklyn) so much he died for it is alive, impossibly. and it's a miracle because he's back and it's horrific because he's back under the worst possible circumstances. but to steve, the winter soldier is worth tearing the world apart for because he's always been bucky first. they find each other and suddenly they're human again. and maybe, despite it all, being "out of time" becomes a blessing, because in this century they'd finally be allowed to love each other the way they've always wanted to. like real people do.
like. no. the captain america trilogy isn't about two queer men traumatized and alienated by war and modern life rediscovering and reclaiming their humanity through their love for each other. but. i mean. it couldve been

everyday i wake up and remember that the 2012 version of steve rogers on the time-heist timeline has been told bucky is alive
like does he believe it?? because he thought he was fighting loki and why would he believe loki?
but also how would loki know bucky? surely that would at least make steve investigate it

everyone talks about how dirty the writers did steve rogers in endgame but hardly anyone mentions how dirty they did PEGGY
like she had a whole life, she moved on and had a husband and kids and a happy, fulfilling life
but they basically threw that all away and invalidity her whole entire life just for a guy she kissed ONCE

i will never shut up about steve rogers and consequently my mind also never shuts up about him - especially when i'm listening to this song because it's so fundamentally him
so here is my pointless, nonsensical analysis of it
Combat, I'm ready for combat
I say I don't want that, but what if I do?
in age of ultron it's mentioned that steve is a man who doesn't know what to do/doesn't know who he is if he's not fighting
in civil war he also says that he wishes when he sees something wrong he "could ignore it". when tony points out that "no he doesn't" steve straight up admits that he doesn't; he craves fighting because it's all he's known

easy they come: everyone flocking to him after he gets the serum

"i never grew up, it's getting so old" - he never got to live the life he was supposed to before freezing; he constantly has to readjust to the modern world and practically relearn everything
he's grasping for the opportunity to have someone he can rely on because of this

kind of self-explanatory but he's been both the hunter and the hunted in his life
"who could leave me/who could stay"; the idea of who could ever leave captain america because he's captain america, but nobody actually stays in the end for him

i mostly associate this bit with civil war simply because of the cutting of my nose to spit my face phrase; it means to disadvantage oneself through a wilful attempt to gain an advantage or assert oneself
whilst i don't think steve regretted the decisions he made in civil war, i think there must've been some regret about how he went about doing it and how it affected him and his relationships
like he was on the run/in hiding for two years essentially because of his choices soooo

this isn't really anything crazy but i always think about the scene in tfa when him and bucky are escaping hydra and the whole place is on fire and he has to jump over it yknow?

i feel like his character is one that has the constant anxiety of having to prove himself; all his physical abilities and what others deem as useful in combat came from the serum - there's the thought of having to show that he's worthy of it, that he was the right decision etc etc
he also canonically has a lot of guilt for things that've happened eg bucky's 'death' - we're are own worst critics so this paired with the want to be worthy must've felt like a thousand eyes watching for him to make a mistake again

ok so i rewatched the scene let me re-evaluate a few things 😭
Red Skull says this: "Yggdrasil. Tree of the world. Guardian of wisdom. And fate, also."
And then he pushes the eye of the snake wrapped around the root of the tree to reveal where the Tesseract is hidden.
I was watching CA: the first avenger the other day and I saw something which I thought was kind of crazy.
Y'know at the beginning when Red Skull steals the Tesseract, he pushes (or pulls or does something to) the little wooden snake engraving in the wall to reveal it. That snake engraving is at the bottom of Yggdrasil, or the tree of life.
Who does a snake represent? Loki.
Who essentially became/made Yggdrasil? Loki.
What one thing basically kick-starts Loki's assent to the God of Time/The God of Stories? The Tesseract.
Please correct me if I'm completely wrong with this or if someone's already pointed out but I just needed to share.
Also I know they can't have planned this because this film was literally made a decade ago but...
