I'm watching a video of a tarantula hawk preying on a tarantula and it's really, really fascinating because the most immediately striking thing about it is how strange it is that the big, fearsome, powerful-looking tarantula barely even tries to fight back. It's almost uncanny: you watch it and you feel like something is wrong. The tarantula just stands there, fangs raised, but doesn't really attack the wasp that's circling around and waiting for its chance to sting the nerve center in its prey's weak underbelly. You want to scream at the tarantula to run away, at least. But it makes sense when you consider what each creature has evolved to do, and evolved to understand.
The tarantula looks strong, but it's a relatively fragile creature. It's an ambush hunter with very poor vision and senses its prey mostly through scent and vibration, and all of its other predators are large animals (coyotes, birds, etc.) that it barely stands a chance against anyway. Besides its irritating hairs, its sole offensive option is its bite, and though it can skitter pretty fast, it's grounded.
The tarantula hawk, on the other hand, is an extremely fast and extremely aggressive flying predator* with relatively good eyesight. They attack very quickly and precisely, exploiting the tarantula's natural defensive position to attack its underbelly. With a single sting in the right spot, it can completely paralyze its target; defensively, its hard exoskeleton protects it entirely from the tarantula's hairs and bite. It can outlast and outmaneuver the tarantula completely. As the video states, it's also possible that the tarantula hawk releases an odor during these encounters that disorients the tarantula, which relies on its scent to perceive its surroundings. (*despite necessarily preying upon tarantulas as part of its reproductive cycle, the tarantula is only actually eaten by the larva laid inside of it. The adult tarantula hawks are pollinators that only consume plant nectar.) It's as close to a perfect hard counter as you can get in the animal kingdom.
This kind of extremely specific evolutionary advantage-stacking is probably my favorite thing about wasps; it's amazing to me how thoroughly they will specialize into their environmental niche. You'd be tempted to call it cruel how completely the wasp counters the tarantula, but it's not really "cruel." The wasp just is. Nature just is.
Giant wasps are a semi-frequent monster concept in fictional settings, but if giant human-predating wasps really did exist, then they probably wouldn't just be these same wasps but super-sized and aggressive (consider the cazadores from Fallout: New Vegas). Instead, you have to apply the logic, not just copy it. Human-predating wasps would be evolved in contrast to what humans are capable of: they would have some kind of evolutionary circumvention against our vision, against our hearing, and possibly even against weaponry or shelter or social structure. And that sounds much scarier and cooler to me than "what if a bug was big." Just fun bug facts!

Exotic Pets I think PJO Characters would own
Disclaimer: This post does not encourage the purchase or distribution of exotic/endangered animals to be kept in captivity. This is completely for entertainment purposes
Percy owns a Blue Mosaic Axolotl and he named it Mandy. This is because he originally thought she was a salamander. When he took it home and showed it to Annabeth, she corrected him but the name already stuck.
Annabeth has a Canary Barn Owl named Cato. She does not own this owl per se. Cato was flying near their apartment when Annabeth decided to leave some food out for him. Since then, Cato has been keeping an eye on her and following her around from the apartment to her college campus to the grocery store.
Grover has a Kinkajou he named Jumper. Again, he does not particularly own him. Jumper just happened to jump onto his shoulder while he was taking a hike through the woods one night. Jumper was hungry so Grover gave him some food. Every now and then, Grover would go back and feed him.
Nico (besides Cerby) owns two melanistic foxes named Aspen and Amber. No one knows the true origin of these foxes, all the campers know is that they just showed up out of no where and follow Nico around. Despite what they think, Aspen and Amber are actually very friendly and they only get defensive if you intend to harm Nico (besides Percy. They hate Percy for some reason).
Jason has a Racoon Dog named Jojo. Jason found Jojo while he was out for a walk. It was raining and it looked like Jojo was injured. Thankfully, they weren't that far from camp so he took him back and gave him a warm bath and treated him. Once Jojo was fully healed, Jason tried to release him back out there but he wouldn't leave
Piper has Anna's Hummingbirds. She built a bird house one time with Leo and hung it outside of the cabin. Next thing she knows, hummingbirds are inhabiting it. Two paticular hummingbirds she sees are two Anna's hummingbirds she named Luna and Aurelia.
Reyna (besides her two dogs) has a Serval Cat she named Aenea. Reyna does not own her but she goes to feed her every now and then and lets her take shelter during storms or when she wants
Bianca has an Unkindness of Ravens. Not one, not two, an Unkindness. EDIT: She was on a quest with the hunters one time and the ravens warned her about where they were going, where they should go, etc. The ravens got attached to her, being the daughter of the dead. And she eventually got used to it, but some of the hunters still get jumpscares when they wake up and see Bianca being surrounded by dozens of ravens. Two Ravens in particular, she named Argus and Sergio. These two are in charge of looking after Nico. Yes, she can speak to them; Yes, they are also messenger birds.
Thalia has a Sugar Glider named Jason. She found him on the shelf in her cabin looking for food. She was about to help him down when he flew to the drawer beside her bed. She took him to Annabeth to figure out what he is. She gave him some food after that and thought that he reminded him of Jason.
Hazel has a Chinchilla named Amy. Amy (short for Amethyst) looks like she's purple but really, she's a mix of grey and blue, which is why she looks purple. Amy was actually a gift from Frank.
Will, scarily enough, has an Edit 2: Sunbeam Snake he named Bowie. Again, no one knows where he came from, they just walked into the Apollo Cabin and freak out when they see the snake slithering around the cabin and they just go, "Oh, don't worry, that's just Bowie". Bowie only likes being held by the Apollo kids and Nico.
Leo has a Tarantula named Felix (Fix for short). Oddly enough, Leo was never scared of spiders, if anything, he loves them. The Athena Cabin always asks for his help to get rid of spiders. He found Fix crawling on his work table, almost getting killed when he interfered. He scooped him up and sent him back into the woods. The next day, he found him again on his table. He kept putting him back till he gave up and made a little space for him

Silksong Speculation
just some things I think might happen in silksong.
I think we’ll almost certainly be getting multiple endings, and I hope that we’ll get at least one that’s somewhat similar to embrace the void that has Hornet ascending
Sherma is gonna die, I’ve just got this deep gut feeling about it.
We’ll see the being behind the curse on Pharloom(obviously) but I actually have the feeling that it’ll be one of two things. Either it’ll be a tarantula higher being(with the silk haunting the kingdom being it’s shed hairs) or it’ll be something else entirely that’s using the silk from the captive weavers to make some sort of giant spell. That last idea is mostly based on the uses we see for silk in hollow knight
We’ll be getting the fishing mini game. I do genuinely think this is a possibility because team Cherry must know about that meme by now and it’s be exactly like them to do that.
I really hope we get an NPC based on mossbag, like he’d be this kingdoms version of mister mushroom
I know it’s by far the most unlikely thing on this list but I really hope we learn a bit more about wyrms
The final battle is gonna have a killer ass background which overlooks the entirety of the map from height.
I think Hornet is gonna get the chance to spare Lace after their last fight.
Actually kinda on that topic but I feel like silksong is going to feel a lot more like darksouls than even hollow knight did because of Hornet actually being able to speak to other beings and having her own dialogue options.
I wonder if the huntress knows the hunter?

This blog is delightful!! I see so many new buggy friends every day now and it's lovely! I've always been a fan of an assortment of bugs (I was the kid who would spend all day looking for them instead of playing with the other kids, lol) but I've always had a particularly hard time warming up to the especially spindly and fast moving guys, particularly spiders (somehow, tarantulas do not apply to this statement, my beloveds) but seeing other people be enthusiastic or have neat bug stories has been helping. Are there any particularly "gnarly" (subjectively, of course) speedy arachnids that you wouldn't mind sharing?
(NOTE THAT NEGATIVE COMMENTS ON THIS POST WILL GET YOU BLOCKED.)
Oh, I can relate! I used to be an arachnophobe, and the very large, fast, and leggy ones scared the heck out of me. This is going to be incredibly subjective of course so I'm sorry if my definition of gnarly dudes doesn't fit yours! I'll also stick to spiders one might find in the US, since that's where I'm based.
And just a note that none of these guys scare me anymore! I've grown to love and appreciate all of them, so this post is in no way trying to shed them in a negative light. And none of these dudes are harmful :)
Giant crab spider (actually a huntsman, Olios giganteus):
Tumblr media
Look at that face and the cute little peets. Precious. Photo by deserts
Dark fishing spider, Dolomedes tenebrosus:
Tumblr media
These pals can get up to 4 inches across and are incredibly fast! Photo by jmcardle
Carolina wolf spider, Hogna carolinensis:
Tumblr media
The largest wolf spider in the US! Like the other two, they actively hunt rather than trapping prey in webs, so they're very fast. But look at that adorable little face! Photo by arcebianca0505
Giant house spider, Eratigena duellica:
Tumblr media
Smaller yet somehow more leggy than the others. They're harmless funnel weavers, but holy smokes are they fast! One of the fastest species in the U.S., as it happens. Photo by bryn_
And finally the large and leggy pantropical huntsman, Heteropoda venatoria:
Tumblr media
That's so much leg. Wow. Impressive hunters! They've been known to take down small lizards and snakes. If I could kiss one I would. Photo by mutolisp

tma!sanders sides au bc i’ve been brainrotting over this for the past several days
(@wobblystrawberry helped a lot with this [hiiii])
Remus:
- The Corruption
- the bastard that made me start this whole thing (wanted to make The Stinky Trash Bastard Man, Stinky Trash Bastard Man Squared and it sorta just went from there)
- known as The Duke of The Crawling Rot
- raided the magnus institute with Jane Prentiss (where he meets Logan, they probably start dating sometime in the AU) (both Remus and Prentiss wore raggedy red dresses and Roman got pissy about Remus stealing his color)
- dating Janus and living with him + Annabelle Cane (more on her later)
Roman:
- The Desolation
- known as The Prince of Total Desolation/The Prince of Devastation
- was The Lightless Flame’s attempt to salvage the idea of having a Messiah and all the work that was put into that (a failed attempt at that)
- a lot of “he hurts everyone close to him because of the intensity of his love for them (“also he can’t touch anyone without burning them alive)” going on with him
- him and Jude Perry are lesbian/gay hostility (also Jude pretty much HATES Roman because he’s quite literally the “replacement” for the woman she loved) but sometimes have their moments of coexistence
- him and Virgil have something going on but it isn’t clear to anyone (including me) what exactly it is
speaking of…
Virgil:
- The Dark
- it was close between The Dark and The End but ultimately I went for The Dark
- ascended to Avatar-hood earliest out of everyone else (at like something between 14-17 idk)
- much more on the human-ish end of the spectrum (main thing is his eyes, i’ll drop the design soon i promise)
- Janus (who’ll i get to next) was like a mentor/older sibling figure for him, and tried to get him to become an avatar of The Web (is still trying to do so) which is why 1) Virgil is still closely tied to spiders, and 2) mostly why Virgil Does Not Like Janus
- Virgil still has a pet tarantula that Janus had given him, he’s tried to muster up the will to kill her or get rid of her more times than he can count now, to cut off his ties with The Web, but he just can’t bring himself to do it
- him and gerry (who i’ve decided doesn’t die in this au and instead becomes a fully realized Beholding Avatar) are close friends and most of their interactions go something like:
“You fell in love with the fucking personification of insanity and lies" "big talk for a guy with a crush on the biggest bitch of a fancy dumpster fire" "fuck you" "fuck you" "so you're trying to tell me you didn't name yourself after gerard way?" "i didnt" "bullshit, i bet you heard 'mama' and immediately took his name" (gerry’s trans in this, i make the rules)
- Virgil used to be friends with Julia Montauk before someone got jealous and tipped her off that Virgil’s an avatar (they get less toxic later i promise okay?)
- also he’s sorta friends with oliver banks, they have these “oh hey, it’s you” acquaintances and sometimes sit down to catch up like:
“how’s it going with your vast boyfriend? (mike crew)” “oh yeah a Hunter cop shot him he had to pretend to be dead while Buried for a bit but he’s doing better now, tea?” “how’s your bf in the red?” “my what.” “y’know the Lightless Flame’s Messiah 2.0?” “MOTHERFUCKING ROMAN??”
Janus:
- The Web
- okay yes The Spiral is literally the fear of deception, and yes Janus is literally called “Deceit” but this fits him better imo
- he/she Janus because fuck it
- as i said, tried to get Virgil to become a Web Avatar, still trying, how well this is working out for her is up for debate
- he is pulling all the strings possible to keep Virgil far away from The People’s Church of The Divine Host as possible (whether this is out of genuine care and fear for how being in a literal cult would affect Virgil’s wellbeing or a want to keep Virgil’s connection to The Dark as possible… that’s also up for debate)
- has severe scarring on the entire right side of her face, how did that happen? basically, Mary Keay wanted to test to make sure the Leitner skin book was real, so she hired janus (who also brought Virgil, and that’s how gerry and Virgil met) to help with that, long story short, she then backstabbed him and tried to skin him alive. janus got away but let’s just say she’s pretty damn lucky Virgil was there to get him to a hospital
- dating Remus (and eventually Logan) and lives with Remus + Annabelle Cane
- Speaking of Annabelle Cane, one day while Remus and Janus were just cuddling on the couch, Annabelle just walked in, said “We’re a colony now”, and set up in the spare bedroom s5 style and Janus + Remus were just like “oh-kay?” and went on with their day
- if you’ve ever seen that one “passive aggressive roommate” song on youtube, that’s Janus and Annabelle. both are the passive aggressive roommate.
- spider limbs from his back as well as the several hands thing because why the hell not, it works
Patton:
- The Eye
- mainly the being judged/having your secrets exposed aspects (because in sander sides he is literally the judge over thomas’ morality, his job is to watch over thomas’ actions and tell him whether or not he’s a good person)
- certain people make eye contact with with him and Know that he Knows all the bad things they’ve done, and feel the compulsion to spill their guts, once they start, they cannot stop no matter how hard they try
- after the fact, his victims find a teddy bear sitting on their bed that always seems to be Watching them no matter where they go
- works at The Magnus Institute, where he meets Logan, who, during his transition to becoming an avatar, was one of his biggest supports, since he was going through the same thing, they start dating after a while, and by the time of the Prentiss + Remus attack, they’re engaged (they both fully ascend only a few months after their wedding)
- [insert patton having a moral crisis because he doesn’t want to be a monster that feeds off of people’s fear but he has to and part of him likes it wow this is reminding me of a certain other Beholding Avatar]
- idk how it happens but he still becomes a father figure for Virgil somehow, i’ll figure out specifics eventually
Logan:
- The Vast
- while i absolutely love Beholding!Logan hear me out. the fear of insignificance works so well here.
- he started working at The Magnus Institute a year or two before Patton (and five or six years before the Prentiss + Remus attack)
- i cannot overstate how everyone in the au thinks he’s Beholding: Jon thinks he’s Beholding, Gertrude thought he was Beholding, Gerry, who canonically has an ability to tell if people are marked by an avatar and who, for the purposes of this au is an avatar of The Eye, thinks he’s Beholding, motherfucking Elias/Jonah thinks he’s Beholding, Virgil, Janus, Annabelle, everyone thinks he’s Beholding EXCEPT Remus, who just knows for some reason (at one point when Patton and Logan got engaged Remus was like “damn patton you’re so committed to the eye, wouldn’t have figured you’d marry a vast avatar.” “a what”)
- to be fair, he was like 0.5 seconds away from becoming an Eye Avatar then BOOM BITCH VAST JUMPSCARE (The Eye is immensely bitter) and is partially Eye-aligned
- when Patton and Logan started dating, Logan just kinda assumed that Patton knew he was a Vast avatar
- after Patton learns, the convo goes something like “but- you work with the institute? how are you an avatar of the vast?” “i still need to eat, patton, and rent in central london is not cheap.”“huh.”
- Logan has a tie that Patton got him after learning he was a Vast avatar, the tie has a blue sky that fades into a deeper blue at the top, has some clouds and birds scattered around, and has a colorful sunset at the bottom, he wore that to their wedding and every day after
- there is healthy communication between all parties when Logan starts dating Remus and Janus as well
- probably levitates elias/jonah over the edge of a building for threatening/traumatizing Patton at some point, Elias had no clue that Logan was a Vast avatar until that moment (self-made blind spot, like the one he had around Martin being a threat)
- Jon and Logan would be friends. they just would.
- Logan’s probably the one who convinces Virgil to go to therapy
that’s most of what i have right now, i will probably continue to talk about these bastards + post the designs

AN (APPROXIMATE) TIMELINE OF THE NAVIGATORS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cosmodyssey's given us a slew of the Astral Express' former Navigators and my first question was, naturally, if we can actually give them a distinct order outside of "Himeko is the current Navigator".
The good news: Two-thirds of them can be cleanly placed on a timeline because most of their backstories imply or directly mention specific universal events. The other third is...blurry, but in my attempt to construct a timeline here I'll be giving my rationale for why I'm placing them where they are.
This is going to be long so I'm putting it under a cut.
Capy Baba is the earliest of the Navigators given to us in Cosmodyssey, and it's very easy to discern why. Their backstory explicitly mentions they took the helm at the end of the Swarm Disaster and that their "predictive pathfinding" helped the Express avoid the Swarm. They also existed in a pre-Synesthesia Beacon period of history and needed a human translator to aid them. Their work helped revitalize the Express' star maps so well that they're still in use today, and eventually Capy Baba retired peacefully once they were done with their work.
I'm not sold on the precise order of these next three, only that they're after Capy Baba due to the presence of the IPC in two of their backstories and the third being an Intellitron. For the former two, the IPC wasn't formally established until the Swarm Disaster was over (I've double-checked since originally posting and it did exist pre-Swarm Disaster, it just saw massive expansion and reforms after the Disaster), and I don't believe you start seeing independent Intellitrons until after the Emperor's War is finished.
Sometime after the IPC is formed and starts hiring bounty hunters, the crew and passengers of the Astral Express mysteriously disappear. A bounty hunter named Oakley is enlisted by Pom-Pom to act as Navigator in the wake of the disappearance, and they accept. They help the Express fight off "star beasts" while helping find the missing passengers and recruiting new ones. This takes place over the course of six months, and once the crew is suitably replenished Oakley quietly leaves the Express. They still hold the record for the shortest recorded stint as Navigator.
Bob, formerly of the IPC-wanted crime syndicate Tarantula, joins the Astral Express as a guard. Eventually, it's discovered that he's joined under a false identity and his exposure results in his assignment to the role of Navigator. It's mentioned he had a hatred of mechanical life but still invited them onboard "in times of war" (which I take as a sign his stint was either during the Emperor's War or right around the same time). It's unknown how he met his end, just that he died in a heroic defensive battle.
Sam-3000 is an Intellitron and her tenure is the most distinctive out of the whole bunch since she led an entire fleet of Astral Expresses. There's likely a long period before and after her time as Navigator where the trains are constructed and then fall to the wayside, but her backstory mentions her career was during "an era of enterprise". I feel that's supposed to point towards her leading the Express during the Second Prosperity (a 500-Era economic windfall for the IPC that gets more explicitly mentioned later). She only retires once she's unable to replace her own parts.
For the rest of the Navigators, the order is very linear and defined.
Dolly was a musician from Tiafoe whose music was able to attract many new passengers to the Express, and even brought Akivili back onboard. It is during her tenure that the fall of Akivili occurs, an event experienced by all Nameless, and the moment starts Dolly's anomalous crystallization. Before she is completely petrified she's able to assign a new Navigator.
It's explicitly noted that Isee's historical record has been tampered with repeatedly by History Fictionologists, but assuming the story we're given is correct: Isee oversaw an important period in the Express' history, covering the fall of Akivili and the subsequent birth of Nanook. Their career was defined by the chaotic schisms and diaspora caused by the loss of the Trailblaze, but they remained steadfast even when the Express was reduced to two passengers. They eventually stepped down from the position, and it's explicitly mentioned who succeeded them in the role. Notably, the Omen Vanguards begin to appear in the universe after they step down.
Falcon Amundsen is listed as coming into the Navigator role shortly after Isee, and it's under him that the Express regains the glory it lost in the wake of Akivili's fall. He's explicitly mentioned as taking the helm during "the early days of the Cancer of All Worlds", and was likely the first navigator that had to deal with Stellarons. Falcon's efforts to rebuild the Star Rail inspired a new generation of Nameless, but he passed on before he could see the ultimate fruits of his work.
Granholm eventually takes the mantle of Navigator at the age of 17. His career was in "a time marred by disasters and fractured worlds" (Stellarons), and the Nameless are transformed into cosmic heroes under his tenure. Granholm spends his life on the Express and passes on peacefully of old age.
It's shortly after Granholm's passing that the Express falls into disrepair due to the influence of Stellarons on the Star Rail and the universe. The train eventually crashes into an unknown planet and remains unfound for so long that its legacy begins fading into myth.
Eventually, a teenage Himeko finds the stranded Express and spends many years fixing the train. Once her work is complete the Express takes to the stars again, with Himeko becoming the new Navigator. She is the current Navigator and (we hope) she'll stay in that position for a long time to come.
We obviously haven't gotten an exhaustive list but this is a lot of Navigators and we can draw a pretty clean timeline of who was in charge in important moments in the Star Rail universe's history (or, at the least, where the gaps are for when certain events happened). Even if we don't know every single person to ever fill the role it's still very comforting to be able to place people and cosmic events in relation to others like this.

Why I love Earthspark
Spoilers ahead
Female characters treated like people and not weird or afterthoughts
The child characters act like children and not mini adults to please boomers
The Decepticons have more than just Card Carrying Evil
Starscream's abuse is finally taken seriously for once and without woobifying him
Megatron is Scottish
The terrans are cool
NB rep for both terran and human
The main human family are Black American and Filipino
Seriously when was the last tine we saw an interracial pair where both parties are nonwhite?
Dot is a badass, we learn about her as a person, disabled but treated with agency
Alex is also a badass and a bumblebee fanboy, yet we also learn a bit about him
Dot and Alex 🤝 Tom and Maddie = healthy relationships in classic kid properties
Elita is also a badass she's also closer to her personality than the weird trope of making her a villain or fridging her
Bumblebee is a struggling young adult and not a infantilized annoying caricature
Actually his arc seems to be one giant rebuttal against the trend of making him Kid Appeal by having him struggle with being a mentor and dealing with kids
Breakdown is Sonic the Hedgehog
The main human villain is a legitimate threat without being a villain sue or boring
The other main villain is literally named Karen (and also a legit threat)
Optimus Prime is back to being funny and not a overly serious messiah, angry old man, Nerd or cop
Soundwave's revenge bod
Skywarp and Nova Storm are girls and can put up a fight they also have more relevancy than u can say with TFA Blackarachnia
Scratch that Skywarp in animated media again and gets to use her powers
Dot and Mo have natural hair and even wear bonnets
If you look past Mo's rather uncanny design she's actually really cute and lovable
Robby is cool too
Thrash and Twitch hmmm love seeing two characters of both worlds embracing all their heritage
TWITCH'S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT especially her dynamic with Megatron
He calls her little bird
Nigthshade. Just Nightshade. Cool altmode cool personality, doesn't sugarcoat their identity (it's not 5000% perfect but still very great to see)
Really good message about respecting history while also thinking for yourself and new generation not making those same mistakes
the old generation gets to learn and grow too, the only ones who don't refuses to
Bringing in characters like Tarantulas, Hardtop, basically characters we haven't seen much of
Love how the experiences characters go thru aren't easily wiped away a la Grimlock and Hashtag both experiencing PTSD from the harm inflicted on them and allowed to feel those emotions
Steve Blum is Starscream again but still sounds fresh and not rip Prime beat for best
The cultural details while not 5000% perfect are pretty great like league above past shows
Like you can tell more than one writer of color is in the room
More nonwhite VAs instead of the usual 3-4 max
Angered the ultra conservatives
Thrash is Hunter and Kid Andrias
Jawbreaker is funny as hell I also liked his abilities and dynamic with grimlock.

below the cut (because there are so many bug pictures) i would like to post. a gallery of WASP DIVERSITY
Tumblr media
ruby tailed wasp. it rolls up like a pillbug to protect itself and cannot sting. it lays its eggs in other wasp nests
Tumblr media
blue mud dauber. not aggressive, males cannot sting. adults are pollinators, their young eat black widow spiders. It's also blue if you can believe that
Tumblr media
pelecinid wasp. cannot sting. this has two population groups - one in the southern us & most of south america that does regular parasitic wasp stuff, and a population in the rest of north america consisting only of females that reproduce asexually.
Tumblr media
baeus wasp. this guy is fucking crazy. flightless & preys on spider eggs. and it's small as hell
Tumblr media
fairyfly. world's smallest insect. lays eggs in other insects' eggs and only lives a few days.
Tumblr media
doddifoenus rex. having trouble finding more information about the species.
Tumblr media
chalcura. check out those antennae! preys on ants.
Tumblr media
tarantula hawk. even more pretty antennae! one of the largest parasitoid wasps. preys on tarantulas. very docile, but does have one of the most painful recorded stings of all insects - it's beat only by the bullet ant on the schmidt pain index. just don't fuck with it though it's not going to go after you
Tumblr media
thread waisted wasp. isnt she cool! one got stuck in my bathroom once.
Tumblr media
giant ichneumon wasp. isn't that crazy! unable to sting. preys on one specific other species of wasp (pigeon horntail).
Tumblr media
organ pipe mud dauber. described by wikipedia as "exceedingly docile" so you know she knows what's up... and she makes nests out of clay because she's a beautiful little potter. so apparently these guys are haplodiploid, which means that they'll just lay eggs and any unfertilized eggs generate males and fertilized eggs generate females. that's weird.
Tumblr media
steel blue cricket hunter. You'll never guess what she hunts.
anyway umm yes. WASPS. theres so many cool wasps out there. Dont let yellow jackets poison wasps for you i promise theyre not all like that ...
