Kill Your Darlings 2022 - Anon Master list, prompts, & stats 💜💀💚
First of all, a huge thanks to everyone who participated — prompters, writers, artists, beta readers, and cheerleaders. Without you, this fest would not have been possible.

We had 55 claimants.
65% (36 out of 55) of claimants submitted a fanwork, 24% dropped their claim (before or after the deadline), and 10% left us on read (jk, 5% were never heard from again after confirming their claim, and 5% asked for an extension and were never heard from again).

Kill Your Darlings 2022 Recs!
@hp-mcd-fest has ended, and I still haven't recovered from all the amazing fics! There were so many (SO MANY) good ones. MCD has always been hit or miss for me, but boy did these fics hit!! And hit reallll good. Here are 7 of my favorite stories from the fest!

💀 Breakfast, interrupted by Hrair [Lucius/Narcissa, Hermione/Draco, T, 5.2k] 💀 This fic is so funny. I was laughing the whole time. Who knew MCD could be so enjoyable?
All Lucius Malfoy wants is to have a proper, pureblood heir and to eat his breakfast in peace. Is that really too much to ask?
💀 a long way back to the light by @swoontodeath [Colin/Harry, M, 3.8k] 💀 LOVED this fic. Just the right amount of creepy and also a dash of mystery. Colin is such an underused character imho.

💀 Nine Hundred and Twelve by @cannibalschism [George Weasley, T, 5.1k] 💀 TIME TRAVEL, ANGST, WONDERFUL METAPHORS. This story has it all. I love the description of time travel in this fic—as unnatural, unknown. George is so desperate to get Fred back that he forces his way through the unyielding layers of time.
After long nights, impossible exams, and years of studying, my application to join the honourable ranks of those Wixen known only as Unspeakables has been accepted. Dad could not be more proud. Mum bleeding cried at the ceremony. My siblings congratulated me for finally doing something other than grieving Fred. They all said this would be good for me, that this would be a fresh start.
They don’t know I did it all for you. All for you, Fred.
💀 Sartre Versus the Stoics by JK_Terfling_Can_Suck_My_Silicone_Dick [Draco/Harry, M, 19.5k] 💀 If you want to have a good cry, I HIGHLY recommend this fic. It deals with grief in such a wonderful, very real way. It definitely has the same vibes as Stop All the Clocks, another heart-wrenching Drarry fic.

Drarry Fic Rec: Sartre Versus the Stoics from Kill Your Darlings 2022 (don't read further if this MCD will upset you)
Okay, this is not for everyone, but for those it is, this is so beautifully written, it's worth holding your breath the whole time and not releasing the tears until the end. This is from @hp-mcd-fest.
Harry is dead. Here is the summary: After Harry Potter kills himself without warning, his friends and family are left to pick up the pieces on their own.
For those into philosophy and philosophers dig right in! However, you needn't be to fully take in what this fic has to offer. After a sudden, unexpected death friends and family each react in their own way and some not so noble. Each carries a part of that person, but some carry more than others. And in this case, someone who no one else knew about except Kreacher, mourns alone. The discovery, though, is what can bring peace to those dearest to Harry.
I'll leave the philosophical aspect of this fic to others to discuss. It's been ages since I took those courses. I'm sure it adds a whole other dimension to the fic.
The ending lines are beyond perfect.

@hp-mcd-fest has been revealed and I’m so happy I can finally put my name on this. This was my very first time writing Drarry and the prompt was a lovely one from @waterfalls-moon. I’m actually really quite proud of this?

Draco had rarely wanted for anything in his life. He grew up privileged, receiving almost anything he asked for. He had learnt, from his father, that no problem was too big to throw money at to make it go away. The name Malfoy had always opened doors, and those it didn’t open were rarely interesting enough to step through anyway. Lucius Malfoy had slid through the corridors of the Ministry like a shadow, leaving pouches with gold in important hands. A whispered promise in one ear, a threat in another. Draco watched and learned and adopted it to his own life. He perfected the craft during his time at Hogwarts, and he was unstoppable.
That was, until the war. The war came and Draco’s world changed forever.
The war changed everything. His father returned from Azkaban a broken man and his mother was a ghost of her former self. After the trials they had shut themselves in Malfoy Manor and left the running of their estate to him. Not that he had minded much, he preferred to keep busy. Apart from the year he had spent back at Hogwarts, finishing up his studies with everyone else affected by the war, he kept well out of the public eye. His father had passed not long after he was released; he had simply faded away until there was nothing left, leaving his mother alone.
Growing up, Draco had never been sure exactly what his parents felt for each other. He knew it was an arranged marriage, and they were never openly affectionate, but then not many of his friends’ parents were either. However, he did believe they had loved each other in their own way. His father’s death had been hard on his mother, and for a few months Draco thought he might lose both his parents in the same year. She recovered though, once Draco had searched out his aunt and persuaded her to reach out. Being reunited with her long lost sister has brought some life back into his mother and now he and Andromeda took turns checking in on her several times a week. She still didn’t leave the Manor but Draco knew she appreciated the visits, even when Dromeda brought little Teddy Lupin along, despite his mother’s complaints about being too tired to be around children.
Life settled into some sort of routine. After a few years of searching, Draco had finally realised what it was he wanted to do with his life. He had always been fascinated by magical objects, ever since he repaired the Vanishing Cabinet in his sixth year. When the opportunity came to rent a small studio just off Diagon Alley he took it, and it wasn’t long before he made a bit of a name for himself for being very skilled at mending magical objects.
At first most of his customers had been curious to see the infamous Draco Malfoy, the fallen Death Eater. He could tell by the way their eyes kept searching out his left arm where the dark mark had been. Or was, still, even though it had faded now and looked like little more than greyish scar tissue. He knew what they wanted, and that was why he always wore long sleeves; he didn’t want to give them the satisfaction. But after a while, curiosity waned, and he got a few clients who started to spread the word and slowly but surely his business grew.
Draco’s business grew and everything settled into a sort of every-day lull until two months before his 25th birthday and then Draco’s world changed again.

2023 Wrap Up
Ok, so. I really meant to post this in January. Had most of it drafted and all but a few of the stats done. And then [gestures widely], life. When I sat down with my airtables and my notebook to begin the task of summarizing this 2023 in words, I honestly couldn't intuit where I fell in comparison to 2022. I knew I read more traditionally published books, which was thrilling in and of itself (although wholly unexpected). And I knew that as each month of the year passed, I despaired over how little fanfic I got to read (and how little I was able to interact with the fanfic community). Life served a whole lot of lemons this year. And rather than retreat into fandom and burrow under the blanket of escapism to deal with the stress, I...held it at arm's length. Perhaps because I was terrified that once I started, I wouldn't be able to stop. Or because I felt I didn't deserve the escape (I had too much to do). Or because I just didn't have the time for a proper spiral. Probably all of the above.
Words Written
It's funny I've chosen to highlight this stat with its own heading this year, given the facts. Despite my best (ok, really more like medium) efforts, I barely managed to squeak out 2,300 words (a quick little fic and a smaller little ficlet). And I guess I just wanted to tell myself that that's ok. That as disheartening as it is to look back and see so few words, to know that I signed up and backed out of fests, it's ok. I spent some time working on the MCD fic here and there, and I know I'm going to be really proud of it when I'm finally done. I have so many more stories to tell. The words will come when they come.
Traditionally Published Books
Last year I set myself a goal of 12 books and only managed to read two. I am happy to report I smashed it out of the park this year with a total of 13 books. The biggest contributing factor here is, of course, the way I devoured all the Grishaverse books in April. I enjoyed a new release (Forget Me Not) and a couple of delightful queer romance novels (RWRB and Boyfriend Material). I continue to study astrology (when I remember), and my love of history accounts for the books on the Cold War and the last crossing of the Lusitania.
Total word count on traditionally published books comes in at approximately 1,538,705 words.
Completed Fics
The vast majority of fics I read continue to be within the Harry Potter fandom. I branched out a bit more to other fandoms this year, but HP will always be my first love. RWRB will get its own section this year, as that's the fandom I'm most heavily invested in after HP. The remainder will be compiled into separate section for ease of tracking stats.
Harry Potter
In 2023, I read a total of 113 completed fics (a handful of them 2-3 times) in the HP fandom, for a total word count of 917,126 words. The 2 fics that started the year in WIP status (and were subsequently completed) will be included in the WIP word count below.
AO3 RATINGS
I remain a horny monster. Explicit fics accounted for all but 2 fics read. Those two tiny little paragons of virtue were rated GA.
PAIRINGS
Dramione remains my most wide-read ship, all though I slutted myself out a fair few more pairings this year. Dramione was referenced as the sole main pairing in 43 (or 38%) of the fics. I read 50 fics (44%) that had non-dramione pairings, with the most popular being parkweasel and harmony. The remaining handful of fics (those that don't fall into exclusively dramione, or explicitly non-dramione) are filthy, dirty threesome/foursome/moresome smut, which usually pair dramione at some point among the tangled limbs.
RWRB
So I read RWRB back in August, and watched the movie and became a wee bit obsessed with these dumbass boys. I had grand plans to then feast upon the wonderful world of fic in this fandom, but life kept getting in the way. Even though I didn't get to read much, I'm breaking this fandom out from the rest because it deserves its own spotlight and I foolishly made grand grand plans for spiraling in 2024. All told, I read 9 completed fics for a total word count of 263,058 words. All were rated Explicit or Mature, most were multi-chap, and all but one featured firstprince exclusively (shoutout to whimsymanaged for being the whore of my heart and feeding me a threesome).
Other Fandoms
I ventured into a few more fandoms this year and I'll be so real with you, I did it exclusively for horny reasons. Fics in this category totaled 127,815 words.
S&B (darklina): 9 fics, 63k words
Anne of Green Gables (shirbert): 10 fics, 31k words
HoTD (mostly harwin/rhaenyra): 6 fics, 22k words
LoTR (haladriel): 2 fics, 7.5k words
Euphoria: 1 fic, 4k words
WIPs
This is probably the saddest section out of all of them, because I neglected my WIPs quite horribly. I think this was part of the whole "denying-myself-fun-until-I-get-stuff-done" mindset: since I wasn't making progress, I didn't get my WIPs. Truly an awful mentality, and the more I write about it the more I'm thinking that it didn't actually accomplish anything except keep me miserable.
At the start of the year, I was following 19 WIPs. Two of these were completed during the year, and I did finish them. I managed to catch up on two others, and somehow added four more. There are a handful of the WIPs I was following that completed during the year that I *didn't* catch up on. First order of business when I get to a place of intentional reading in 2024 is coming back to each and every one of these 21 abandoned children.
Final Tally
And with that said, my 2023 fanfic word count was 1,393,225 words and my tradpub word count was 1,538,705 words, for a total of 2.933 million words read for pleasure this year.
This comes in at 92% of 2022's total reading, and 42% of 2021's. I'm happy I at least got close to a level comparable to 2022. I don't think I'll ever reach 2021 levels again, but it is fun to compare against that absolutely fucking bananas year of reading. BUT. It is sad to see the number continue to go down, and really reinforces the need to change my mindset about fun being a reward that I earn (I'm working on it, I swear, but as I'm posting this in May instead of January you can see that I'm not off to a great start for 2024).
Outside of everything I've read listed above, I also got the immense privilege to read early drafts of a handful of original works that a big beautiful brain I know is working on. I can't quantify those in the word count, but let me just say there are so many character stories I am holding in my heart and I cannot wait for other people to know them and shriek over them someday, too.
My promise for 2024 is to get back to my menace ways. I've got a lot of ground to make up, but I think I might just be able to do it.

I’m actually relatively new to the fandom and just had a burning question, what are all of the fic fests about?
Like I see things like Mpreg, Trans or Horror fests and I know what those are about but a lot of the ones like Wireless, Candy Hearts, Lights Camera Drarry, H/D Erised, Kill your darlings or even H/D Reverse Bang get me very confused as to what their purpose is.
I’m so sorry if the answer is supposed to be obvious, I promise I’m not trying to be ignorant but I went on the AO3 links to all these fests but I still emerged a little confused (it’s a dark time for my one little braincell, she’s very slow).

4 Friday Recs !
New fics I read this week!
1. Wicked Hearts and Calculating Minds by @lumosatnight.
Genderbending fic with Albus Dumbledore/Tom Riddle. This is a serial killers AU. I really liked the concepts and the execution. Genderbending AUs aren’t really my thing. But this fic totally sold it. Lots of confidence in the writing and the plot. Really convincing and super fun to read. 10/10 Recommend. From The Untagged Fest 2022.

2. I’ll take a quiet life by Anonymous
Snarry. From the Kill your darlings HP Main Character Death fest. 5000 words. I rec this because I really liked the unreliable narrator in the fic. Because of the fest’s concept definitely read the warnings. But this fic doesn’t really have an angsty ending. It’s definitely ending on a hopeful/softer note. So if you are normally an automatic swipe left on MCD fics definitely still recommend you check this one out. It’s a pretty unique execution!

3. A Healthy Fantasy Life by pauraque
Star Trek TNG! Deanna Troi/The Goddess of Empathy. Absolutely brilliant and hot femslash fic. It looks at a lot of classic scifi type ethics questions about what exactly you shouldn’t do with AI. Also is nonstop hot.

House of the Dragon!!
Caraxes the dragon has a lot to say. Who wants to read a dragon POV??? We are already so done with How to train your dragon and Eragon vibes! Actually this is nothing close.
Caraxes is a traumatized dragon whose rider died while the dragon got distracted eating goats. Cue major PTSD and not wanting to deal with another rider. Except he gets a rider. A rider who is totally into danger 24/7. This is a beautiful story about their bond and how they start trusting/helping/FIXING each other. Also angst. Lots of angst and healing. How this one packs everything into 3000 words is a mystery.
