Hero oh Hero Blog #1

Three Protagonists:  As many of my followers probably know, I run a pixelart webcomic by the name “Hero oh Hero” (read here). Just to throw my thoughts into the ether, I’d like to share a few of the writing choices I’ve made throughout the production of my comic & why I decided to make those. Not sure if they’re useful and/or interesting to anyone, but it’s fun for me to reflect. As of the writing of this post I’m at 2757 published pages & 3453 pages total if we include buffer, quite some content!  The first thing I’d like to talk about is the general structure of the comic, I run three separate stories that feel relatively disconnected, despite taking place in the same world.

Burk, a heroic character who goes around trying to defeat villains who do evil deeds. As he travels from city to city he meets various friends who join him.

Noah, a bookish introvert who’s favorite hobby is being left alone & avoiding social situations at all costs. He’s also a magic child-soldier being forced to perform missions for a totalitarian government.

Tobi, an adventurous inventor-girl who comes from a world that operates by video-game logic, she gets flung into another world at some point & is trying to find her way back home.  Comic Structure So the big question here is: why tell three stories rather than just putting all focus on a single one? I think the biggest underlying reason for me is that a lot of games I played & series I watched had what I’d describe as a “protagonist-centric world”.  It’s obvious that the story itself will focus on the protagonist, they have that role for a reason, but it goes much further than a character being important/central to the narrative. In a lot of series I felt that the worldbuilding itself, the magic system, the legends and myths, all of it was often designed to accentuate the protagonists’ importance, or somehow add something to “why” the protagonist in particular was worth following. Very often this’d result in stuff like worlds where, if there were 4-types of magic power a person could have, the protagonist would be the one special person with access to 2, 3 or even 4 of those abilities.  I don’t necessarily think this is bad writing in itself, but I did sometimes find, especially in series with interesting side characters/extended casts, that the way the universe seemed to revolve around the hero and their abilities often made the world itself seem less interesting or less real to me.  What got me interested in multiple perspectives & multiple protagonists back in the day were games like Seiken Densetsu 3/Secret of Mana 2 where you had 6 main characters of equal importance & you could basically decide for yourself which of the 6 was your playthrough’s “protagonist” & which 2 out of the remaining chars would join you on the team. Similarly games like Treasure of the Rudras played around with multiple different heroes rather than a “true” chosen one hero of more significance than everyone else.  I noticed that a lot of these games that either split up the roles, or provided multiple canonical characters who technically could’ve done the job, aleviated a lot of the annoyances I had with singular-protagonist series, but also added the fascinating element of how different narratives/perspectives could intersect and affect each other. Designing the Heroes. So from the early onset I’ve decided that I really wanted to tell a story where rather than just a single central protagonist, I wanted several protagonists of “equal importance”. The next question that follows is: If I’m going to have multiple heroes, what characters am I going to choose? Burk came relatively easy as he’s a character I made up for an old English class story back in highschool, though I did tweak him quite a bit from his original design. What I did want to try and do is contrast the other two characters from him, but not *just* in terms of “This one’s strong, this one’s smart, this one’s ... hot” or something, but also more on their role within the story. This is where I got the idea to try and really try to put a notable difference between the main characters & why they’re even in “their story”.  Burk’s a highly active protagonist who goes out of his way to look for adventure, Noah in contrast is absolutely reactive and is thrown into a plot entirely against his will. Tobi is hard to discuss without major spoilers, but I’m thinking that observant readers who are up to date probably know where she falls in this regard. Once I figured out the biggest area of contrast between the three, it was pretty straightforward what setting would best accentuate that aspect of them. Burk & his narrative very closely follow a D&D-type of “let’s find an adventure for the sake of it!” plot, whereas I intentionally threw Noah in a dystopian Empire that has little interest in things such as “personal agency” and “Freedom”.

House of Heroes Blog

So I made a separate blog for my Zelda AU House of Heroes. As of now, there's nothing on it, but if/when HoH picks up, I can post the bigger story beats there. At the very least all resources for the story will be there for easier access. The way I dish out HoH will likely vary from comics to doodles to writing, but I hope to mostly do comics. For now I'll still post strictly HoH stuff here until I make the cover page and references.

(Current aus are (spoilered for a lotta mentions of murder)):

Field.exe: stupid (silly) fusion of stereotypical exe guys and biblical accurate angel traits, very egotistical, calls himself the true god (that is obviously a lie bro stole those powers from his family by brutally murdering them)

‘No Party’ Field: lil guy that is a lil messed up in the head; has definitely been charged with false imprisonment (based off the No Party song from Marios Madness v2) he taunts anyone who tries stealing from him when he attempts to bargain things off for ridiculous prices

‘No Hope’ Field: being controlled by the ghost of a previous contestant, Field kills all of his family in a attempt to get the god powers (which he does, with the help of a very powerful scythe, which can literally kill immortals and steal their powers, based off the No Hope song from Marios Madness v2) he even goes as far as killing the two people who ever still cared about him from his family: Weedy and Clover

‘Bowhomp’ Field: based off ..certain events from a character ai chat, this Field is just fucking dead, with a bullet hole right between his eyes. He follows the contestants around, and doesn’t really do anything except try to warn them of any dangers

‘Abandoned’ Field: after a heated argument, Shotglass, Weedy, and Field storm off to do something other than argue. Field storms off to his barn and Weedy storms off to his house. Little did Field know was they he had been followed by Shotglass, who was now very drunkenly angry and violent, ready to kill someone. He did, and so Field’s farm was left abandoned, as well as Field’s corpse. Shotglass was in a bar a exact year later, talking to BGM and Fishbowl who had accidentally wandered in, when a TV nearby showed a missing poster for Field, which reminded Shotglass of what he had done. Field, however, was somewhat alive, despite massive blood loss, and had been hiding out in his farm, too weak to get out. He was still heavily bleeding so the farm was just covered completely in blood as the crops outside seemed to wither along with Field until BGM finally found him after a year since he had been shot (Based off the song Abandoned from Marios Madness v2)

‘Alone’ Field: simple, Sap and Lucky are fucking dead and Field was too much of a scaredy cat to save them in time. All he can do now is mourn (Based off the song Alone from Marios Madness v2) (still doesnt have design yet)

-everyone is human(oid. human-like? not sure, still have to iron it out)

-much of the main cast is in college; their field of study mirrors what they specialized in/talked most about in-game (ex.- hal = ancient languages, gabbro = quantum physics, riebeck = ancient cultures + architecture)

-they’re all part of a club called Wild Ventures

-Sunstone + Hal are the newest members

-Gabbro + Sunstone have hazy memories of a life they lived long ago, but don’t recall until one fateful meeting when Sunstone joins Wild Ventures as its’ newest member

-Solanum is there <3 she uses a text-to-speech device and has a walking stick; i considered giving her prosthetics but decided against it

-Gabbro is hard-of-hearing and wears hearing aids; they alternate between speaking and sign

-Gabbro writes poetry

-Gabbro and Solanum are both studying quantum physics

-ironically, Sunstone has a deep distaste for the sun

-like the game, there is like one (1) gendered person in the entire cast (it’s solanum)

started learning dansk tegnsprog (danish sign language) yesterday. it's interesting to see it is more linguistically related to lexical danish than some sign languages are to their local written language. Only an estimated 5000 people use it but by gum I will make it an estimated 5001

In other news I have written the transcripts to now 2 gilmore girls episodes in Danish lmao I don't really listen to music so translating tv shows is a very #discoverwhatmovesyou thing happening for me 😙

a system finally getting their wheelchair after fighting their insurance for months? a system getting new stickers/decor for their disability device? headmate A is (weirdly?) comforted and reminded of source because they have the same disability as the body? a system finding a job that will actually listen and help them(especially if it's an invisible disability)? a system getting a earing aid and hearing something heartwarming for the first time like rain or their cats meows? a system accepting that they are disabled and learning to be kind to themselves and not push their limits? a system with an amputation learning a new trick in doing a task without the usually needed limb? a disabled system making other disabled friends that finally get them? a system with severe scarring has a kid excited tell them how cool they are and if they got them fighting a dragon? (Disclaimer: i am not physically disabled this is just inspired by things I've seen others post and talk about, and im genuinely sorry if anything is offensive. i just wanted to try and be helpful so yall have fun system prompts this months!)
