YO WEBCOMIC FANS

Okay, so I haven't actually asked you before. But you get my drift.

Hero Oh Hero (starts here https://www.neorice.com/hoh_1 ) is a pixel art webcomic by @neorice, and it's one of the most creative webcomics I've ever seen. It's got fantasy. It's got superheroes. It's got horror. It's got comedy. It's got spies and wars and wizards who set things on fire. LOTS of fire, really. It's got death games and intrigue. It's got flashbacks. It's got flash-FORWARDS. It's got brilliant characters with tons of variety. It's got multiple complex magic systems that interact with each other in interesting ways. And it's all done in GORGEOUS pixel art with cool and distinct designs for every single character, item, and setting. Seriously, this comic has everything you could ever want from a webcomic (well, it's not Homestuck, but Homestuck is basically an anime so it doesn't count).

The storytelling methods take a bit of getting used to since the chapters bounce around between the comic's multiple main protagonists. You will think the protagonists and their adventures are completely unconnected. THEY AREN'T. You read and you read and suddenly you realize "hang on this is that one thing from the other storyline" and then you GASP and are in awe. It's so brilliant.

Also, on a personal note Noah is quite possibly one of my favorite characters (if not the favorite) to ever be in a Webcomic. He's right up there with Terezi (from Homestuck, which again doesn't count due to being an anime), Remi (from Unordinary), Bun-Bun (from Sluggy Freelance) and Erin (from Aurora, which... also might count as an anime). Noah experiences nothing but suffering from the moment he wakes up to the moment he goes to sleep, and when he DOES go to sleep it gets worse. Literally nobody (including him) wants him to be important but he keeps finding himself in Situations and he deserves basically none of it. He practically bleeds snark. He is so tired and done with everything but everything is not done with him so he just has to deal, and that makes him the most relatable character even imo. I'd recommend reading the comic for him alone, but trust me the other protags are awesome as well. There's something in this comic for everyone, and I think it is a CRIME that this comic is not popular when it really REALLY deserves to be.

Read Hero Oh Hero. PLEASE. I promise you won't regret it.

(Oh and did I mention that the comic is still updating? The quality never drops, and the current arc is REALLY exciting and has some really cool lore drops about the setting as a whole. HOH is truly the gift that keeps on giving.)

It is Windblade, won a raffle from neorice and picked her as the character to get art of. She became one of my favorite characters when I jumped back into transformers a while ago.

Frogatto by Lost Pixel

I usually save longer stories for Retronator Magazine articles, but Frogatto’s history is so interesting I have to share a teaser here.

If you thought Owlboy was taking a long time, Frogatto’s story goes back all the way to 2000 (holy shit, 17 years?!?), when 12-years old Guido ‘Neorice’ Bos drew one of his very first sprites.

You might remember Neorice as a prolific Dutch character and comic artist (of Hero Oh Hero fame) from my artist feature 3 years ago. He’s been slowly working on his skills and improving his character Frogatto along the way (with a slight Rayman diversion when he was 18).

In another part of the universe, David ‘Sirp’ White was working on Battle for Wesnoth. Guido was a fan of the game and ended up doing art for it. In turn, David noticed Guido’s mockups, in particular this tileset:

David wanted to make a platformer for a while and so in 2008 they started to build a game with Neorice’s Frogatto character.

I’ll cut the long story short at this point (and save the longer history trip for a less confined space). Neorice eventually went on to focus on his comics, with Battle for Wesnoth coder/artist Richard ‘Jetrel’ Kettering taking over most of the game development (with David still coding the engine).

Richard took the art to a whole new level with Ryan ‘Rain’ Reilly doing the same with music (the soundtrack is a fantastic trip back to the 90s, give it a listen here). Thus, in 2010 Frogatto saw an iOS release to high acclaim.

Development didn’t stop though. If you buy the version for Mac and Windows (get it here, a steal at $10), you’ll see how the game was around 2013. In essence, Frogatto is a very agile Yoshi with super smooth controls that are a joy to play with.

For the last 4 years, Richard’s been hard at work (albeit in his free time, which makes progress slow). Next version will feature many engine upgrades and bring more story, characters and bosses. You can follow game’s progress on Twitter and Facebook.

Finally something that isnt just mounds of practice so I can post it!

One of the comics I follow is Hero Oh Hero; a three pronged enjoyable tale of heroes and intruige. The arc of Tobi; the story of a young dungeon-crawler going a little further than she thought, has lead to this character in particular. While her name hasnt been revealed yet due to plot reasons, I found myself quite enamoured with the character and her neat design.

So I did some dooduls, working from sprites is pretty fun too, gives you some creative wiggleroom to interpret things your own way.
