Outer Wilds Idea
An idea for an Outer Wilds AU has been rattling around my mind.
A reincarnation AU for the Hatching and two others.
Massive spoilers for the game btw, you have been warned
A reincarnation AU in which the Hatching is the incarnation of Solanum, who in turn is the incarnation of The Prisoner.
What caused this idea was that both the Prisoner and Solanum have died, but in some way are also alive.
Imagine talking to your previous incarnation, who have searched for the eye long before you. An innate curiosity that has transcended time and lives, buried in you shared soul.
Walking around the ruins, with glimpses of a time full of joy and life, walking in a different body, of weird eyes and stranger skin, of caverns and curiosity. Another body, so tall you fell you would fall with every step, of weirder eyes and stranger voices, with a yearning for a home you see around, but do not feel.
I'm kind of surprised to have not seen anything else like this out there, though maybe I've just simply not seen it.

Thank you to everyone who’s been tagging me over the last week - unfortunately PhD stress is high and inspiration and fic writing has been low, but I’ve been adding little bits to my very self indulgent Coma dream!Outer wilds fic: First snippet here
Putting the shoddy headphones over his ears and wincing as a stray copper wire jabs into his temple, leaving a jolt of electricity in its wake, Buck flicks on the oscilloscope.
It’s takes a few moments of suspicious silence until he can feel a slight buzz where the contraption vibrates in his grasp, like a swarm of contained bees, harnessed but very rightfully angry. Lights flicker into brightness, and a steady wave wiggles on the small hatched screen.
At first as he slowly moves the device's dish ahead of him all he finds is the loud burbling of water; the dry shifting of swaying grass, the creek of tall trees yielding. Slowly, he tilts the gadget skyward; and the universe sings to him.
Fleeting noises enter and then vanish as the waltz of the celestial bodies unfolds before him. The sun, however, is unmoving, humming a low steady tone with a majesty that matches its radiance.
CONTEXT: In outer wilds, you use the oscilloscope to track planets by fellow astronauts being on their surfaces playing specific instruments

outer wilds hatchling au angst that i uh,, sort of made on impulse in one day and i'm not too proud of but its whatever
the audio quality is shit im sorry *cri*
anyways, have gabbro comforting hatchling after discovering that they uh. did a little whoopsie thing. /j
also to me this song evokes the feeling of being comforted after such a thing. i swear to god there's that one specific emotion you feel that no matter if the person says the exact right thing it doesnt help. you feel so small, so embarrassed, you dont want to say anything at all but at the same time it's best that someone knows.
and also i kinda sorta kin hatchling ever so slightly, and gabbro is my comfort character, and i used to really really strugglw with s/h. so i kinda used my experience with self harm in the past and what it feltlike being comforted after to channel it into this. i hope you like it.
i might write it into a story if it's not to triggering ::)

Thinking of a silly little Role Swap AU. So silly.
Anyways, if the The Strangers had a budding crew of people to explore this solar system from one of the ship's massive hangars/garages, and the name Outer Wilds Ventures is excluded, what would they call themselves?

Meet Solam! She’s a quantum physics major who joins Wild Ventures after her classmate Gab (Gabbro) talks her into it. She’s excited and ready for adventure!
Some Facts:
Solam uses a text-to-speech device as well as sign language; I’m not sure if she’s mute or has trouble speaking or something else, but she gets by well enough.
She plays piano! She brought a keyboard from home and set it up in her dorm room as soon as she could.
Her favourite animals are goats :) Some of her other favourite things are science, mysteries, and learning.
Solam is fairly tall and has a habit of walking on her toes.

What’s that? More Dwellers? Why, yes!
These are in the concept stage but they’re here nonetheless. Dwellers are addicting to create, lemme tell ya.
Gravel Cobalt is a Dweller living in what I’ve been calling the Beforetimes - before Scorched Orphan was, well, scorched, it was a large and thriving planet called Scarlet Oasis. Cobalt lived a fairly normal life for a Dweller filled with hedonism and not a care in the world until qe passed away from old age quite satisfied.
Terra Cesium, on the other hand, lives during the end times, steeped in denial and trying to continue their life of decadence even as the world bakes away around her. They don’t come to terms with the truth until the very moment she’s forced out of her community tent and driven underground - the only place left on the planet not being actively razed by the sun’s heat and radiation.
The story of Scorched Orphan is an ongoing project in the Cosmic Convergence Outer Wilds RP server on Discord! If you’d like to know more and join in, follow this link to fill out our form! We can’t wait to see you there!

I'm back at it with my Outer Wilds inspired LU fic/comic/idea/thing!
The following comic contains MAJOR spoilers for Outer Wilds: Echoes Of The Eye.
Progression in Outer Wilds is directly tied to the player's knowledge. There are no key items or skill progression, just what you learn through playing. For this reason, anything you encounter about the game can potentially ruin reveals and puzzles. Outer Wilds is the best game I've ever played. I highly recommend playing it for yourself (or watching a stream) and then you can come back and enjoy this with me. :)
Warning over! (If you've played OW:EOTE we are sharing music around a campfire and roasting marshmallows ::) )

Fish jump scare for Legend.
OW:EOTC Spoilers! I've put my thoughts explaining the comic a ways down. PLEASE if you haven't played the game I'd rather you skip the comic and my thoughts entirely than be spoiled!!! It's so important!!!
For people who have played it though,
What if the Prisoner sustained the simulation? I think Legend would have his suspicions about the dream world. Like, 'sure Sky maybe this is a Silent Realm but I think there's something more to this we're missing...' And to then have those suspicions confirmed and have to go through a Koholint situation again this time knowing that there are real people in the dream. It's all going to collapse anyways. The Wind Fish needs to be saved. But still, how would he respond to that?

just asking, what if an iterator possibly gets too hot or cold? What happens if they can’t get to safer temps with out outside forces? What if they can’t get to safer temps at all?
Do you mean superstructures or puppet-bound iterators? I'm sure superstructures have a lot of failsafes to deal with temperature fluctuations, mostly via processing water intake. They're living saunas! They probably have an incredible resistance to both hot and cold, as evidence shows.
I'll talk about puppets here, but if you meant superstructures, well... a lot of what I'll say here could apply to superstructures too.
(For puppet-bound iterators, I am referring to my AU CDSS)
For heat: Puppet-bound iterators, like their former superstructure bodies, run hot and need to stay hydrated. They rely on liquid coolant that runs throughout their bodies. Ruptures in the coolant system are one of their many common problems, but with medical aid, they're not too serious. Many cases are self-healing, or the rupture will seal itself off and reroute around the blockage - like with collateral circulation. Leaks into essential systems are more of a concern than the actual loss of coolant. As long as they stay cool and drink water while waiting to get fixed, they tend to be fine.
If they are stuck in a hot region and can't escape, they'll suffer from dehydration, heat stroke, fried components, damage to organic tissue, seizures... pretty much what you'd expect. As a superstructure, Moon probably suffered from all this leading up to her collapse.
For cold: They're fairly resistant for a few reasons. One is the antifreeze in coolant. Another is the heat that they naturally produce. I'm thinking they have silicone-based skin, which is very cold resistant. They have hemocyanin, which tends to function better in extreme cold than hemoglobin. (Hemocyanin can also work at hotter temperatures. I have like a whole essay about this that I still intend to post lol.) However, the puppets have been modified to have more flexible and sensitive skin - dexterity in exchange for some durability. They're more susceptible to the perception of cold than they would be if they were a still a superstructure. Many of them also dislike snowscapes on principle, because they've been freezing their decaying metal butts off for centuries by the time CDSS happens.
Iterators in both forms are very moist, so if it's cold past their limits, their mechanical components will freeze. And like with hypothermia in fully organic beings, prolonged time in extreme cold will lead to tissue death and organ failure. Superstructures with fractured exteriors (direct exposure of internal parts to the cold air) are especially susceptible to this.
Misc theory about superstructures: Moon's superstructure was able to stay intact into Saint's era because she collapsed straight down into the water, preserving most of her shape. The canyon water could have provided the pressure and circulation she needed in the absence of gravity cores, as well as protection against land pests and insulation against the cold. Remnant slag could have her generate excess heat as well, which would keep the water surrounding her unfrozen. In a way, dying like that could have helped her live longer?!
Thanks for the question anon, this was very fun :P

Random Outer Wilds au idea where the Hatchling (Your character) goes around every planet in an extreme rush to drag every other Hearthian Space Explorer and Solanum's ghostly semi-quantum semi-corpse to the Eye of the Universe with them. Sadly can't bring the prisoner because they are probably dead.
Imagine Riebeck's reaction to being forced into a Spaceship with A REAL NOMAI!
Imagine Esker finally seeing everyone else after so long! (Except for those who actually visit them, like Chert)
Chert being Chert might be nice to have Gabbro help prove to Chert you are indeed, in a time loop, even though you're ending it now.
Gabbro is your time buddy. Gabbro isn't getting out of the abduction of literally everyone in the space race.
Solanum: She gets to fulfill her entire race's dream of reaching the eye. Plus it might be a fun experience being around so many Hearthians even if she can't understand them.
Feldspar. You probably PULL a Feldspar just to reach them in time before the sun explodes. Poor friend is chucked into a crowded spaceship With a Nomai and can't even comprehend it before everyone is chucked onto the original Vessel and shot to the Eye of the Universe.
Gabbro is probably the only one with any idea what you're doing the entire time. Poor Hearthian is trying their best to explain to their fellow adventurers what exactly is going on while the Hatchling bolts across space.

Mcyt aus I forgot abt pt 2,
This is a fantasy slash gods and goddesses au. It was purely an excuse so I could brainrot Dream and Phil cause they were my absolute favorites
Phil is an exiled god living in an inescapable forest, and Dream is running away from a god that stole his face. They figure out how to escape eventually but until then they live out a straight up (fantasy) cottagecore dream in Phil’s Howl’s Moving Castle-esque house lol
There’s a lot I remember from this au but so I’ll just leave it under the cut (whole ass essay underneath)
Phil returns soon after. He gets inside, foot hits something, looks down and almost jumps out of his skin at the body in the living room.
(He has this mechanical crow that his actual crows use to talk to him which allows for banter such as: “Don’t get a heart attack old man” “S H U T.”)
Anyway Phil takes care of Dream, cleans him up and everything. And when Dream wakes up Phil asks him what god he pissed off to deserve a curse like that. “what curse" "wdym what curse bruv ur whole face is gone" "my whole face is what?"
Anyway Phil's happy for the company no matter how temporary and Dream is making the best of it + just generally happy that no one is trying to kill him.
Dream along with Sapnap and George are thieves/adventurer type characters I believe. One day they stumble upon some ancient ruins and accidentally disturb XD. XD puts a sleeping curse on George as punishment. The three manage to escape but Dream goes back to try and do something about it and that's when things go wrong for him.
Phil is a god, exiled to the forest in place of his son. He is the god of the stars, married to lady Death. Kristin sends him letters by crow. Just. A new crow each time, and not all crows make it to him.
The way the forest works is that it’s essentially infinite from the inside, the trees move when you’re not looking, you cannot fly above the trees if you’re inside. It was commissioned to be a prison by the gods and when it was finished they killed the person who made it.

getting obsessed with another fucking au. god help me.
pre-canon/canon divergence dd au where sarmenti meets dismas pre-graveyard and ends up befriending him while he's still a stupid idiot sewer rat. gives him his god damn bread and is like "i hate to see a man starving." dismas threatening to beat him up and sarmenti just treats him like a sort of pet sort of buddy and responds to every threat with "ooh, how menacing~" and then eventually they get along and start being buddies. this au would also ride on some other canon divergence (biggest shift possibly being baldwin *not* getting leprosy) but it has been living in my head for two? three? days now and it won't leave. curse the yaoi virus.
oh there's also that outer wilds coffee shop au that won't leave either but i'm more along for the ride rather than holding the reigns. sometimes you just have to take action for yourself though <3

That Golden Glint of Glory
AKA, that Wild West Outer Banks AU I was talking about.
For the record I think this is a fascinating period in history, will not be glorifying and jumping over the egregious racism and many other issues of the day, but it was also an incredibly tolerant and multi-ethnic setting and I think people tend to forget that. Cowboys were Mexican. Many cowboys and frontiersmen were gay. Prostitution was normal. There were whole Black towns and black regiments of the military. Many people traded and integrated peacefully with indigenous groups. I think that deserves some recognition! So both will be present, because there's some really interesting dynamics at play in this era. I hope you like it!

making an outer wilds au that takes place sometime after the end of the game, can’t wait to inflict it on the world /hj
what i’ve got so far:
-everyone is human(oid. human-like? not sure, still have to iron it out)
-much of the main cast is in college; their field of study mirrors what they specialized in/talked most about in-game (ex.- hal = ancient languages, gabbro = quantum physics, riebeck = ancient cultures + architecture)
-they’re all part of a club called Wild Ventures
-Sunstone + Hal are the newest members
-Gabbro + Sunstone have hazy memories of a life they lived long ago, but don’t recall until one fateful meeting when Sunstone joins Wild Ventures as its’ newest member
-Solanum is there <3 she uses a text-to-speech device and has a walking stick; i considered giving her prosthetics but decided against it
-Gabbro is hard-of-hearing and wears hearing aids; they alternate between speaking and sign
-Gabbro writes poetry
-Gabbro and Solanum are both studying quantum physics
-ironically, Sunstone has a deep distaste for the sun
-like the game, there is like one (1) gendered person in the entire cast (it’s solanum)
. . . . . .
bonus sunstone

When the Dwellers were finally forced to flee underground to escape the deadly heat and radiation of their sun, they took to painting murals on the cave walls. They had neglected to record their history until far too late - these murals serve as one of the few windows into their lives.
This is Pyre Selenium’s mural. It represents the death of her brother and her love for him, including the symbol for the Heart, a vague but incredibly significant concept to the Dwellers.
For more on the Dwellers and their history, check out the ‘scorched orphan’ tag! It’s an ongoing project within the Outer Wilds Cosmic Convergence RP server on Discord - see my pinned post for info on how to join if this interests you! :)
