“Soldier,” Vengeance of the Moon Knight (Vol. 2/2024), #3.
Writer: Jed MacKay; Penciler and Inker: Alessandro Cappuccio; Colorist: Rachelle Rosenberg; Letterer: Cory Petit
#Marvel#Marvel comics#Marvel 616#Vengeance of the Moon Knight#Vengeance of the Moon Knight 2024#Vengeance of the Moon Knight vol. 3#latest release#Moon Knight#Soldier#that opening page is breath-taking (and perhaps in a literal sense for that dude getting whaled on)#/almost/ succeeded in distracting me from Soldier’s raging survivor’s guilt#but…oof#what really gets me about this issue (and I guess Soldier’s character in general) is how adamant he is about his willingness to die#and yet he continues to live#he didn’t get blown up in his introductory issue he got turned into a vampire and now he’s seemingly outlived Marc#it seems to be asking the question «yeah sure you’ll die for me but will you keep on living to continue my mission?»#which already gets me in the gut but also seems particularly impactful when it’s coming from Marc#considering how much he consistently felt like a dead man walking haunted by his past and alive only to somehow atone for that past#and I very much look forward to coming back to this issue if it’s ever revealed if this new Moon Knight is really Marc come back wrong#because Soldier spends so much of this issue insisting that the Moon Knight he would die for is dead#and it would make that first page wonderfully/terribly ironic#just the concept of the man you feel you should have died for still living but twisted into something unrecognizably despicable#maybe to the point where the man he was is functionally dead#that would be wild

Now I think Tigerclaw was actually a family man to some extent in this au... I think he genuinely loved Goldenflower and all of their kits together, they were childhood friends, I think he mourned Swiftpaw and Lynxkit's deaths, I think he was overjoyed when Tawnypaw came to ShadowClan because he was glad to know one of his kits would be safe. He cared deeply for his mother and sister and originally doted on his sister's kits before Ravenpaw saw him murder Redtail.
Granted, is he a GOOD dad? ... No not really. He got his own son killed (albeit as collateral damage), Tawnypelt has ptsd from what she witnessed in TigerClan, Bramblestar has a complex, and tbh he just treats Mothwing and Hawkfrost like dogshit. But there's some conflict there, they all have fond memories of him and he tries to appeal to that to get them to join him and conform to his ideology. Tawnypelt has this worst of all because she's now the only living kit who spent the most time with him and saw him at his best and his worst.
He also easily turns on them, his love comes with conditions.
#i like giving villains traits like this. particularly ones who dont seem to get many humanizing aspects in canon#i like humanizing the villains it makes their despicable actions all the more horrifying to me#like... hes a dad. he knows what losing a child is like. he knows the agony of it#and... he still kills gorsepaw in front of his mother. he still believes halfclan kits should be wiped out.#because his hatred is more powerful than that love. love wasnt enough.#also ive been thinking- would he turn on nightdapple and dustpelt to get a higher chance at being deputy?#... nah. the dynasty can be loose at times. thats why bluestar's leader now. no one else was eligible for the position at the time#and dustpelts an inexperienced warrior most of the time and nightdapple just never wanted the position#she was always ''tigerclaw should be deputy when the time comes. hes more passionate than i am. i just want to document things''#oh also he abuses his own nephew. his love is conditional.#i think at first when he mentored him. he was strict and tried to push raven when he could#cause even if thats his nephew. hes got no backbone. that wont do and tigerclaws the tough love type#and raven knows that at the end of the day his uncle cares about him#... and then he sees his uncle kill redtail. and tigerclaw sees his nephew run away#and thats when the silencing attempts start. suddenly the uncle hes known and loved his whole life- his only kin left really-#-is a murderer. and that murderer is now trying to orchestrate his death and he KNOWS it#and hes suddenly so much crueler with him during training and hes becoming more and more isolated from the clan...#aughhhh its fucked up.. tigerclaw is a nasty man#razorverse

Something I was always a little concerned about in the lead-up to Hazbin Hotel was that Charlie was going to be a bit too passive of a character, ie; leaning only into the ‘kind, optimistic Disney-Princess-in-Hell who just wants to help everyone’ vibe and not really have much else going on as a character. Which in turn would make her feel kind of bland next to the big, over-the-top or dramatic personalities like Angel Dust and Alastor.
But thankfully, that is not what happened and there’s actually a lot that I like about what the writers are doing with Charlie, particularly in the potential future development and reveals they seem to be setting up.
First off, I like how Charlie generally comes off more like an over-the-top caricature of that ‘Disney-Princess-in-Hell’ vibe, ie; SUPER energized, enthusiastic, affectionate and emotional, often to overbearing degrees that get on everyone’s nerves. It’s generally funny, or at least amusing, and lets Charlie stand out alongside the other big personalities in the cast. Funny enough, she’s actually a lot like Blitzo in this regard, minus the seesawing into extreme abrasiveness.
And more importantly, we’ve already gotten major hints all but confirming that this over-the-top personality is largely a façade, and that Charlie actually has some very clear issues and baggage that she’s working VERY hard to keep buried beneath the surface. Again, much like Blitzo.
Like how in the trust-fall exercise in episode three, despite asking everyone to reveal something personal, Charlie actually bullshits just as hard as Angel Dust and Sir Pentious with her whole ‘I love you all!’ bit. Sure, it’s not like she was lying or being insincere, but it’s clear that was NOT something truly personal for Charlie. And in episode 4 we have Husk straight-up calls out Charlie as ‘wanting to solve everyone’s problems but her own’.
Then of course we have the brief glimpses we’ve seen of Charlie getting angry. Both the times we’ve seen Charlie dealing with some truly despicable and horrendous characters, we’ve seen that rather than lacking the ability to get angry, Charlie is often working to hold herself back. In both her encounters with Adam and Valentino we see points where Charlie is clearly NOT intimidated or afraid of them at all and seems fully prepared to throw down, only being stopped by reigning herself in or by someone else (in this case Angel) stopping her.
Again, it all paints Charlie’s big, bubbly, hyperactive exuberance as something of a front, a way for her to bury a lot of thoughts, feelings and general baggage she doesn’t want to face. Just like what the show has already explored with Angel and Husk.
It actually raises some interesting questions as to what’s REALLY driving Charlie in running the hotel and trying to help Sinners. For one, Husk has already pegged Charlie as ‘wanting to solve everyone’s problems but her own’. And going back to thematic crossover with Helluva Boss, I can’t help but see some potential parallels between Charlie creating the Hazbin Hotel, and Blitzo creating Immediate Murder Professionals.
I think it’s pretty clear at this point that half the reason for creating I.M.P. was as a coping mechanism for Blitzo, or rather the assassination business in general. Something that we’ve gotten hints to as early as the second episode in Blitzo’s back and forth with the Robo-Fizz (“Does anyone love you, Blitzo?”/“No. But I’m really good with guns now!”). With the other half of the reason Blitzo created I.M.P. clearly seems to be to create a surrogate family, as seen with how much he tries to insert himself in the M&M’s lives. Possibly even a specific attempt to replace the family he unwittingly destroyed fifteen years ago.
So I really have to wonder if we’re going to find out that Charlie creating the hotel and her goal of redeeming sinners is in part likewise a coping mechanism and escape for her own baggage.
It’s actually really interesting how episode two first introduced the idea of people opening up with Sir Pentious, then episode four dived further into the concept of the walls and fake personas people put up to hide from their pain and trauma with Angel Dust and Husk. With those two opening up and starting to let their walls down to each other, and by extension we the audience, I think it makes Charlie’s own façade all the more noticeable. It’ll be pretty interesting if Charlie actually winds up being the toughest nut to crack when it comes to opening up about their real issues and baggage. Yet another interesting trait she shares with Blitzo.
All in all, I’m really liking what the show has been doing with Charlie as a protagonist. And I’m REALLY interested to see where the story is going to take her.
Particularly what’s going to happen when she reaches a breaking point…

i think that jun would love it if you put on your prettiest and shortest skirt just to ride his cock, it would be the only thing you have on as he coos about how pretty you look at fucked out and covered in his cum as he guides your hips to keep going - his fingers bunching in the fabric of the skirt as he hates his neck to you, allowing you to mark up and suck on his adams apple.
Tumblr media
why are you insane. literally this is so mean to me i cant believe. this is despicable.
word count — 813 warnings — reader has a vagina and breasts, reader wears a skirt, est. relationship, scandalous lunch activities, fingering, multiple orgasms, marking, creampie
Tumblr media
“fuck, look at you— so pretty, baby,” jun groans, his grip on your waist tightening as he moves your hips in circles on his cock.
earlier you’d gone out to have a nice lunch with friends, but it had been anything but nice once jun’s hands had started to creep up your thighs underneath the table, eager fingertips dancing along the hem of your too-short skirt.
you knew you wouldn’t be able to hide the heat that was creeping up into your cheeks if he continued doing what he wanted, so you’d caught his hand and squeezed hard, giving him a warning glare. luckily he’d stopped until the meal was over, but as soon as you were in his car his fingers were buried inside you and you were clutching the armrest of your seat for dear life, gasping as he fucked you through two orgasms that made your legs feel like jelly.
once you’d gotten home, you were determined to give him a taste of his own medicine by riding him on the couch, but soon it was you who was falling apart on his lap while he didn’t even seem phased.
he lets go of your hips, his hands traveling upwards to tug your shirt down beneath your boobs. but evidently he’s stronger than he thinks, because the thin fabric tears easily under his touch. you whine as he rips the rest of the shirt off and lets it fall to the floor beside you, but he doesn’t miss the way you greedily clench around his cock at the action.
he doesn’t respond, just pulls you down harder onto his lap, his hips thrusting up to match the movement and creating more force as he fucks into you.
his fingers wander across your exposed chest, pinching at your nipples before wrapping his arms around your back and pulling you towards him. with his mouth level with your breasts, he looks up at you through his eyelashes and takes one of your breasts in his mouth. his eyes stay glued to yours, carefully watching your open-mouthed expression.
you move your hands from his shoulders up to his head, threading your fingers through his hair and pulling sharply. he moans into your skin as you push his face harder against your chest, and suddenly his mouth leaves your breast with a pop as he pulls his head away for a moment.
“you gonna cum all over me, sweetheart?” he asks, his thrusts never faltering as he bounces you on his cock. his hands fall back down to your hips, balling them into fists around the fabric of your skirt. “gonna cum on my cock like a good girl?”
“y-yes, jun, please,” you gasp out, your fingers still firmly settled in his hair.
he smirks, that stupidly hot grin of his, and leans his head back against the back of the couch, exposing his neck. “go on, baby. mark me up. and then, you get to cum.”
without a second of hesitation you lean down over him, pushing your lips against his adam’s apple. you can feel the vibrations from his low groans against your mouth, and it only spurs you on to suck harder, your teeth gently grazing his skin as you tug on his hair.
you can feel his cock throbbing inside you, buried so deep you can feel every miniscule movement he makes, and it sends jolts of pleasure rushing through you every time his hips snap roughly into you.
“fuck, you feel so fucking good,” he hisses when you bite down particularly hard at the base of his neck. it was an accident from how hard and how fast he’s moving you up and down, but neither of you mind at all.
his orgasm hits him almost out of nowhere, spilling into you as he holds your hips firmly in place while he cums. you continue rolling your hips on your own, fucking him through his high as you keep sucking bruises into his neck.
you can’t see for yourself but you’re sure his eyes are scrunched tightly shut and brows knit together the way they do when he cums. after making him cum so many times over the years the image of his face is ingrained in your mind, and just that thought alone is enough to send you over the edge after him.
eventually you start to come down from your orgasm and you fall over onto his shoulder, both of you breathing heavily. he lets out a long, slow exhale and opens his eyes, settling on your figure hunched over his lap. he puts his arms around you and pulls you close, gently lifting you off of his softening cock and letting you roll over onto the couch beside him.
you giggle, finally catching your breath. “so… i take it i should wear skirts more often, then.”

The kindness surviving
As I can't stop saying, one of my favourite things about Spy x Family is how focused it is on humanity's innate kindness. Its premise is three lonely people finding a family (and themselves) with each other, the story's endgame is to secure peace, it's hopeful in the midst of its realism, and it allows characters to be vulnerable when it comes to family and connections.
And one more thing that is added to that, is how Yor and Twilight (to a less obvious degree) have retained their kindness and compassion through their violent lives and professions.
Yor started the assassin gig when she was just a teenager.
Tumblr media
Adding to that how it was a choice she made out of despair and lack of any other choice, and how the Shopkeeper seems like a despicable person to work under (there's no moral merit to recruiting children for assassinations, let alone orphans with no other choices left), this could have easily made into a story of how Yor became cold and emotionless and cruel.
Instead, particularly thanks to having Yuri in her life, she's remained as kind as ever, even when she kills people. She doesn't torture her targets, would rather refrain spilling unnecessary blood, and she's careful and quick in her job.
And through all that, her priority has never been herself.
Tumblr media
She's kind, almost to a fault. She's polite and when it comes to everyone else but her targets, she thinks they have the best interests at heart and can even be confused sometimes as to why some people behave in a rude or cruel way.
She's human. Her reason to start and continue being an assassin was to ensure her brother's carefree life, and now that she's bonded with the Forgers, they've joined Yuri in the way she wishes to protect their peaceful life.
It's showing that despite her violent work, her humanity has prevailed, making her selfless and nurturing. It's in our nature.
Twilight's case is handled differently, as he has denied himself any identity and attachments to ideals, aside from protecting the peace.
Tumblr media
He's not supposed to "have" traits or a personality. He was trained to be able to adapt to any situation and become the role he's acting as. When he acts as a father, he can be kind and caring. When he acts as a terrorist, he can be cruel and violent. And when his job gives him no option but to kill people who stand in his way, he'll do it without remorse.
But again, like Yor, his reason to do everything he does is to ensure peace remains, so that no-one will have to suffer like he did. That's a very empathetic and compassionate motivation, and though the circumstances of his life made him bury it deep, the moment Anya cries and clutches onto him for comfort he's reminded securely of that.
As he is when he sees Anya smile.
Tumblr media
He cares for the next generation and wants to provide it with a better future than he had. And while the previous season showed many moments of instinctual kindness (saving the kid from the charging cow, sparing the German shepherd, thanking Bond for saving Anya, encouraging Carroll Campbell to play fairly) and understanding of how humans can work together (his discussion with Desmond, talking about how despite different stances, people can still meet in the middle if they try), the cruise arc showed how he prioritized on making Anya happy. While at first he was confused by the concept of "having fun", he eventually ended up observing Anya and encouraging activities that would make her happy.
Tumblr media
Again, after a certain point the "mission" is nowhere in his mind and he only worries how Anya's mood will affect her and the family. As he focuses on that, he turns compassionate, empathetic, and dare I say, sweet.
And I can't help thinking those are traits he doesn't have to pretend that much to show, if at all.
Tumblr media
He's a master of manipulation and deception. He could act tooth-rottingly sweet to deceive his targets, but seeing how open and unprecedentedly honest he becomes with Yor, and how (even if he doesn't realize it) he actually learns to be a good father to help Anya with her mood, I don't think that's the case with those two (three, if you count Bond too!).
If nothing else, we (and Anya) have the advantage of hearing his thoughts, and while we joke about how "For The Mission" is his flimsy excuse to himself for the feelings he's developing for his family, it's truly important how he's started to not need the reminder; how he can instinctively care for them, because it's what his compassionate nature tells him to do.
And I think, just like Yor, it's very important and telling that through his life of violence and deception, his humanity has survived just under the surface and is starting to show more the longer he stays with the Forgers. He's not "learning" to be compassionate and caring; those are traits that already existed, but he had to cover with all his fake identities. However, since they were what led him to become a spy in the first place, the way didn't replace the motivation.
He's human, even though he willingly trained to suppress any such vulnerable spots, they could never be extinguished entirely.
This story is full of hope for humanity and how kindness can survive and prevail among anything else. Its characters would logically follow the example.
And I love them for it.

Whisky Kisses and Chocolate Dreams
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Synopsis: You are trying to enjoy a quiet night to yourself when a certain Mr Willy Wonka stumbles home from a night out ‘testing chocolate ingredients.’
Word Count: 1.4k
Warnings: Google Translated phrases (please let me know if these are wrong!)
(I’m lowkey annoyed that Wonka didn’t speak other languages in the movie, because of course Gene Wilder did and it would make sense for young Wonka to as well considering he’s just come back from his travels, so you better believe I’m sticking it in here)
Beyond the happily ever after, the takedown of the fearsome cartel, the rearrangement of the corrupt police force, the arrest of the despicable wash house owners, Noodle’s family reunion, and the return home of the scrubbers, there was you and Willy. Through everything.
You accidentally stumbled across him on the first day he attempted to sell his chocolate in the Galleries Gourmet and, as his chocolate plan grew, continued to bump into him in the most unexpected of places. From the moment your eyes met, and a sweet smile rose on his face, the smile he glowed with as he watched the chocolate cartel fly away, sent Noodle home to her mother, toured the ruins of the castle that would become his cosmic axis, you and Willy were thick as thieves.
Since then, Willy had been busy building his mini-empire, including his refurbished shop in the Galleries Gourmet (which had quickly become one of the most popular retailers in the city) and the opening of his brand-new factory, but never busy enough to neglect you. Because he took you with him, into his factory, into his living quarters, initially as Chief Operations Officer, regular taste tester, roommate and partner in crime, and eventually into the most freeing relationship you had ever had the pleasure of stumbling into.
Willy’s friends visited, of course, and very often, especially Noodle. However, it was Miss Benz who Willy was out with one night when you were allowing yourself time to relax with a cup of hot chocolate and the latest funny papers.
It was late, but not too late, and you were sat in the armchair in your bedroom. It had been your idea to keep separate bedrooms even after your relationship with the chocolatier had blossomed, tentatively suggested over an early breakfast, but Willy was eager to nod and agree. He worked a very strange schedule, sometimes sleeping in late and others bursting awake at the first sign of dawn, and often not slipping back between the sheets until the world was shadowed in darkness. Despite this, when your schedules matched up, neither would oppose the other sneaking into their room at night.
In your room that night, the fire was roaring in the hearth, battling the oncoming autumn chill, and you were enjoying the stillness of the end of a busy day. Willy had gone out early afternoon, and you glanced towards the clock languidly, not particularly worried. Willy may have been prone to getting himself into tight spots, but you had no doubt that Miss Benz would stand for none of it.
Still, you did wonder where they may be. It wasn’t unusual for Willy to disappear for hours and then show back up as though it had only been a few minutes, babbling about a new idea or the source of a new inspiration. But these were usually solitary adventures – he enjoyed devoting all his time to his friends when they were in town.
Before your twinge of worry could teeter and threaten to overspill into a pool of anxiety, you heard the distinct sound of the front door clicking shut below. He was always extra quiet when coming home after dark. He never wanted to wake you.
Not that this seemed particularly important to him on this night. Because, not ten seconds after the front door shut, there was a mighty bang like metal hitting wood, some unintelligible mumbled words, heavy footsteps, and finally a soft knock on your door.
Before you could respond, your door flew open, and in flashes of purple and brown, a familiar body stumbled into your room, exclaiming your name. You were faced with Mr Willy Wonka, swaying slightly on his feet with his arms wide open. “Hello, my love!”
He looked dishevelled, his coat crinkled, hair a mess beneath his slightly dented top hat and shirt tails hanging out over his trousers. Heaven only knew what had happened to his waistcoat.
You watched him with your eyebrows raised as he took off his hat, patted down his curls, and turned on his heels around your room.
“Hm, where did the coat rack go?” He mumbled to himself. You did not have a coat rack. He looked at you, biting down on your lip to stop from laughing at the state of him, and a dawn of realisation rose on his face. “Oh well, I suppose this will do.”
He stumbled over to you and placed the hat, at an angle, on your head, adjusted it slightly, and then patted the top with a smile. Once he was satisfied, he turned and fell unceremoniously face down on your bed. That laughing smile grew unrestrained on your face as you plucked the hat from your head and put it carefully on the table beside you. “Willy?” You questioned, and he looked over at you with glazed-over eyes and a dopey grin.
“Mmm?”
“What are you doing?”
“Having a lie-down.”
“This is my room,” you said, humorously.
“Then why are you sitting there like a goose?” He rolled over onto his back so he could look at you properly as he patted the empty side of the bed.
You were quick to cast the paper you were engrossed in only a second ago to the side and slink into his open arms. But, getting up close to him allowed you a sudden realisation before you could settle down.
“Willy, have... have you been drinking?!” You asked, unable to hold back your laugh as you noticed the scent of alcohol tingling your nostrils, the dreamy mist of his eyes, the twitching of his fingers.
“No,” he responded quickly, defensively. “Miss Benz and I have been testing chocolate ingredients.”
“Oh, and what were these ingredients?”
He opened his mouth, then hesitated before replying, looking beyond you in thought. “Well, we started with rum for these incredible bottle-shaped Rum Babas I want to experiment with, there was quite a bit of that to taste, then we tried some liqueurs, lots of flavours, the cherry tasted just divine, a glass or two of champagne for truffles, and then we sampled some whisky for fudge. And then, I... well, then I was here. Come closer, I missed you.”
He held you tightly, pulling you into his sweat-sheened skin until your nose brushed against the tautness of his neck. With this closeness, Willy took the opportunity to press a dozen soft, quick kisses to random planes of skin on your face, across your nose and cheeks and forehead and hurriedly closed eyelids. You could smell the overwhelming scent of whisky lingering on his breath as his lips stumbled across your face, but he pressed them to your own before you could comment.
His kiss tasted interesting, a cocktail of numerous alcohols and, of course, chocolate, but his lips were as soft and gentle as they always were. You hoped that would never change.
“Oh, Y/N, Y/N, Y/N,” he started mumbling as he pulled away, staring at you with wild eyes. “Mon amour, amore mio, meu amor, qīn’ài de, meine geleite – hm, wait, that’s not right. Meine.... Ah, meine geliebte.” Although the numerous ways of breathing a new lease of life into the sweet name he had for you tickled you pink, giggles bubbled up in your throat and tumbled from your lips as unrestrained as the whisky flowing on your lover's breath. He looked at you with a bemused expression that was hurriedly offset by a beaming smile. “Why are you laughing?! I’m expressing my love!”
You didn’t bother to even try and stop the laughs escaping your body, but you did fight through them to make your excuses. “I know, I know, but... nevermind.” You dragged the heel of your hand over one of your eyes before looking at him earnestly, genuinely. “I love you.”
He glowed at your words, lit up and grinning like a child at the foot of a Christmas tree. “I love you too,” he returned the sentiment with quiet vigour, stroking two trembling fingers against the protruding bone of your cheek.
However, the moment was somewhat spoiled by the obnoxious yawn he released, barely covered by the hand that wasn’t touching your skin.
“Come on,” you said, nudging him slightly until you could peel up your coverlet, “let’s go to bed.” He was eager to fall under the covers and pulled you closer instantly, so the bedspread fluttered down around you of its own accord.
Held tight in his arms, you felt the softness of Willy’s lips whisper at your hairline, an everlasting goodnight kiss. Before you could press a kiss to his neck in return, he was already beginning to snore.

Regarding Alastor's Hallway Scene in Episode 5 of "Hazbin Hotel"
Good day, folks! As sweet Mimzy said, "...pour a few fingers of rye and he turns into a kitten" so let's do that. Let me set up my Redemption, and let's get into this.
*Sip, sip*
Now, this is quite an interesting thing; the phenomenon of the reactions I have been seeing particularly regarding Alastor in episode 5 of Hazbin Hotel has been ... curiouser and curiouser.
*Sip, sip*
The big question that I think we should be asking after this episode is who Alastor is leashed to---but there seems to be something else on people's minds and that is the interaction Alastor had with Husk in the hallway of the hotel. I mean, every great character needs an epic hallway scene. For Star Wars it was Vader and Luke. For Hazbin, it is Alastor. Let's explore this.
*Sip, sip*
As a society, feasting on entertainment, whether it be through books or films or a series, fans often say that they enjoy the "villain" or "morally grey" character as opposed to those who are set on their compass of goodness. I find this to be a lie that we often tell ourselves and believe completely.
Sure, we find them more entertaining and thus we favor them, but then we try to find excuses for their behavior, make it a despicable act that is done for righteous reasons. Or because we desire to see someone who is tremendously struggling or has a rather horrid reputation overcome this and prove to be a fantastic character underneath all the layers of darkness. We don't like them because they are bad. We may pity them for they often have the most tragic backstories, or we see the potential of their goodness. But we like them because we believe that everyone in their universe has the wrong perspective of their wickedness while we, outsiders looking in, see the potential of their heroics. What they can do despite everything.
That is not liking a character because they are the villain. That is liking a character because of why they are the villain and how they can overcome it.
A few examples:
Rhysand dressing Feyre up like a whore and tattooing her without her consent: well, he was doing that to protect her and help her.
Darth Vader: Mass murderer and second in command of an empire built on absolute control; but he fulfilled the prophecy of the Chosen One and had originally fallen because he wanted to save the love of his life and his unborn children.
Loki: Yeah, he slaughtered 80 people in 2 days, attacked NYC with an alien army killing hundreds if not thousands in the process, and committed genocide prior to that, BUT that's because he was severely broken and now he sits all alone at the end of time, saving an infinite amount of people.
Granted, I love 2/3 of those characters because of the reasons provided. But also because in their prime they were WICKED!
*Sip, sip*
Now let's look at Alastor.
Alastor, the Radio Demon, and one of the most feared overlords of Hell ... threatened one of the souls he owns. And now, I see people comparing him to Val or saying they hated him at that moment or now have a poor taste for him in their mouths. But ... this is exactly what you asked for from him.
*Sip, sip*
Val, who ACTIVELY tortures Angel Dust, is being used as the comparison for Alastor because he THREATENED and scared Husk after Husk stepped over the line.
*Sip, sip*
Alastor, when alive, was a serial killer. Alastor in Hell captured overlords, tortured them, broadcasted the torture throughout Hell, and became one of the most feared overlords.
He didn't do that by being "nice" or "charming." He did that by being vile and not for a greater good. He did it because, as far as we know, he wanted power. And, damn, he got it.
Demons KNOW to be afraid of Alastor. Granted, his reputation may have faltered because he has been away for 7 years but before his departure and even upon his return, for the most part, demons avoid Alastor as though he were death incarnate.
*Sip, sip*
Now, let's examine him in episode 5. Only the scene that is getting the most traction; I'll talk about Alastor and Lucifer in another post. But let's look at this scene:
Alastor and Husk in the hallway.
*Sip, sip*
Let me put some quotes here real quick:
From the Pilot:
Husk to Alastor: "Don't you [Alastor, the owner of my soul] 'Husker' me, you son of a bitch!"
Husk to Alastor: "Are you [Alastor, the owner of my soul] shitting me?"
Husk to Alastor: "You [Alastor, owner of my soul whom I have just shoved off of me] think it must be some big fucking riot just to pull me out of nowhere? You think I'm some kind of fucking clown? [even though I am contractually obligated to obey your summons]"
Husk to Alastor: "I [the one contracted to serve you and obey your commands] ain't doing no fucking charity job [even though you told me by your order that I have to]."
Alastor to Husk: "Don't worry my friend [you, who sold your soul to me so that you could keep your power because you almost gambled it all away], I can make this more welcoming [providing you with something that you enjoy even though you are contractually obligated to obey my commands without payment/reward], if you wish."
From episode 5:
Alastor to Husk: "It's nothing I can't handle, don't worry, Husker. [Proceeds to walk away, leaving the conversation] Who in their right mind would cross me? [Continues to walk away, posing the question as rhetorical and not requiring an answer]."
Husk to Alastor: "... You've been gone a while. And it's not like anybody knows why---"
Alastor to Husk: "They don't need to know. [And it does not need to be discussed further, so leave it alone.] And don't you worry your fuzzy head about it. [Drop it. Drop it now. Don't pick it up]"
Husk to Alastor: "You may own my soul, but I ain't your fucking pet!"
[Personally, I think Val would have instantly backhanded AD for that alone.]
Alastor to Husk: "Hmhm. But you are [So stop talking, just let it go, I'm letting a lot slide here]."
Husk to Alastor [the owner of his soul, who has slaughtered overlords of Hell]: "Big talk for someone who is also on a leash."
Alastor to Husk: "Aha. What did you say? [Now you have tested my patience too much!]"
*Sip, sip*
In the pilot, Husk openly and without fear insults and cusses at Alastor. And what does Alastor, the owner of his soul, do? He lets it slide.
In the one scene between them in the hallway, Alastor essentially still does nothing even though it is evident that Husk struck a nerve. At least twice over in this scene alone, Alastor gives subtle hints to Husk that it is best he just stops. And it is not like he even dismisses Husk's worries about Mimzy or even his absence. It's more along the lines of, "Oh, I know she is in trouble and came here for me to clean up her mess, but I am a bit occupied at the moment dealing with the actual King of Hell, so I'll get to it when I get to it. Just keep her busy for now." And in regards to his absence, he makes it abundantly clear that Husk is better off just not mentioning anything about it. He cuts Husk off, and essentially says, "Look, just keep quiet about it. It's no one's business but mine and I'm fine, I can handle it, so let's just leave it alone."
All the talk people say of Alastor having a big ego, oh undoubtedly, but it makes sense why Husk is in pride in this one scene alone. Alastor tells him "let it go," and moves to walk away from the conversation.
But Husk pushes. And pushes. And on that final shove, I think Husk even knows before Alastor got mad that he went TOO far.
*Sip, sip*
And Alastor still, for the most part, does nothing.
He reminds Husker that he owns his soul, pulls on the chain just to knock Husker off-kilter, and then, rather demonically, tells Husk to not EVER mention the fact that he is leashed again. Honestly, with what Alastor COULD do to Husk ... that was letting him off SUPER easy. Like, Husk should be kissing his feet that that threat was the only punishment he received for that comment.
Val? Forget it. AD would probably be filming for 3 days straight. Alastor doesn't even touch Husk.
This move is also a sense of security for Alastor, I think. Husk probably thought this was just another comment that would result in Alastor just ignoring it. But it takes Alastor by surprise and destroys his comfort. He loses himself in a fit of fury and pulls on Husk's leash to remind both Husk and himself, "Yeah, I might be leashed but I still own YOUR soul, Husk! So do not test me!"
*sip, sip*
So, yeah, Husk gets scared, as he should. Alastor is terrifying.
Should this lessen our opinion of Alastor as it seems to have done with so many fans?
No. Absolutely not. If anything, this scene provides balance to that paradox I supplied earlier; how we like the evil characters because of the good they could do but we should also like them because they are evil and should be expected to do evil things.
Alastor IS evil. He owns Husk's soul.
And yet, this evil overlord allows Husk to get away with soooo much. And when Husk oversteps, as he absolutely did, to not even be smacked by Alastor speaks volumes of Alastor's opinion of Husk.
*Sip, sip*
Here is my speculation:
Husk obviously knows more about Alastor than most. But Alastor owns hundreds if not thousands of souls. Husk is someone he calls on often, obviously. Husk knows Alastor is leashed. Faustisse, a former employee of Spindle Horse, and one of the original teammates beside Viv for the Hazbin project said that Alastor regards Husk as one of his closest friends. Perhaps not friend, but maybe one of his closest confidants. Why else would Husk know that Alastor is leashed? Granted, we cannot tell from the dialogue if Husk knows where Alastor was for 7 years or even if he knows who Alastor is leashed to. To some extent, though, Alastor must trust Husk.
In this scene, Husk violates that trust. He deserved to be threatened, reminded, and terrified. I adore Husk. He is one of my favorite characters and when I saw the hallway scene, I thought Husk deserved way worse than what he got.
And Alastor still takes what Husk had to say about Mimzy into consideration. He still tells Mimzy, a friend he has had since he was alive, that she needs to leave.
*sip, sip*
Yes, Alastor is evil. And it is soooooo good to see him BE evil. And not for a good cause but just because someone got under his skin. He owns Husk and he lets Husk off very easy. So to see him lose his temper and not even physically hurt Husk allows the nugget of possible, minuscule glimmer of somewhat kindness to linger.
I loved the hallway scene. It did a fantastic job of showing us what Alastor COULD be if he really wanted to, why you shouldn't mess with him, and how he elicits fear.
Val lords over his souls through physical abuse. Alastor does it mentally when called for. They are two totally different overlords with really no comparison to be made between them save for this: they are both evil.
*Sip, sip*
Alastor ate in episode 5 and left no crumbs. He remains, quite possibly, the most interesting character in the show. I cannot wait to discover more of him and watch him be absolutely wicked towards others.
Cheers to you, Radio Demon. If I were in Hell and had to be leashed to anyone, I would want to be leashed to you.
*Sip, sip*

Danganronpa Project Eden's Garden: Animal Symbolism
Okay, so I just finished the prologue (adored it, the writing is impeccable), and noticed that each character features an animal on their clothing. I'm sure tons of people have pointed it out already, but I thought it'd be fun to go through the symbolism of each, alongside any other observations I had.
Damon Maitsu:
Damon's signature animal is one of the more obvious ones - it's the big snake on his tie. Biblically, snakes are kind of a big deal... Just one snake, really, which gave all of the others a bad name. In 'Garden of Eden' arc of the Bible (which is relevant for obvious reasons), a snake tempts Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. The snake basically says "Hey queen, the apple won't kill you, it'll show you the truth, God's a liar." Adam and Eve eat the fruit, condemning humanity to eternal suffering.
Tumblr media
Painting Damon as the snake tells us a lot about his role in the narrative and his characterisation. The main theme for Eden's Garden seems to be 'head vs heart', or 'logic vs emotion'. While some characters lean towards emotion, Damon leans towards logic... But based on the Pathos system, he doesn't fully condemn emotion - it can be a good tool when it comes to winning arguments, after all.
At the end of the prologue, Damon disagrees with seeing the good in everyone. He argues that the ultimates are more likely to stab each other in the back than to help each other unconditionally... In other words, he argues that ultimates are ambitious, to the point of throwing away their morals - because he himself is ambitious to a fault.
While a lot of people see snakes as creatures of evil (particularly when it comes to THE snake in the Bible), it could be argued that the snake is an agent of the greater good. Yes, the snake was the catalyst for the fall of humanity, but you could argue it was also the catalyst for the first critical thought. Adam and Eve questioned the word of their creator and chose to go against him. That didn't end very well for them, but you could argue it liberated them.
Would you rather be a sheep, at the mercy of your shepherd, or a snake that sees the world for what it truly is?
Wolfgang Akire:
Speaking of sheep... Wolfgang has a pretty neat (very symbolic) sheep pin. The idea of him picking out a sheep pin in like... a Claire's Accessories is very funny to me.
Tumblr media
Much like snakes, sheep are also very Biblically relevant. In the Bible, God's people are usually cloaked in sheep imagery. God is the shepherd (fun fact: 'shepherd' derives from 'sheep' 'herd'), and the sheep are at his mercy. In that light, a sheep is a truly powerless thing.
Perhaps Wolfgang's sheep pin denotes him as a follower rather than a leader. Not to a specific person, but rather to an ideology - to his own morals, which he seems very attached to. Sheep are often seen as weak, existing only to be devoured by stronger, more predatory animals.
But this symbolism might exist here to be subverted. One of the most popular sheep-based phrases is (drum roll please): "Wolf in sheep's clothing".
Lawyer man is, quite literally, a wolf in sheep's clothing. His name has the word 'wolf' in it. He has a sheep on his clothing.
Does Wolfgang obsess over justice due to a guilty conscious? Is it a cover to mask his deepest, most despicable thoughts? Only time will tell, but I'm onto you, lawyer man... If that's even your real name.
Eva Tsunaka:
Okay, so I'm not 100% sure if Eva's animal is a raven or a crow, but I don't think it matters too much, people tend to perceive 'ominous medium-sized black bird' in a similar way, regardless of the specifics. Eva has a black feather in her hair and a badge with a bird's head on it. The badge looks a little bit emu-ish (which would be really funny), but the general vibe is more in line with a crow/raven.
Tumblr media
For simplicity's sake, I'll mostly talk about ravens, because I think (don't quote me on this, I have not read the actual Bible) crows are never actually mentioned... but ravens are, so we'll go with that.
SO, ravens, black birds. Apparently, the first bird to be mentioned by name in the Bible is the raven, which... lines up with Eva being the first named bird character we meet (there are a lot of bird people, we'll get to it). During the whole Noah's Arc debacle, Noah sent out a raven to scout for dry land - it didn't come back (I think? It gets mentioned, 'tos and fros' and then doesn't get mentioned again, so I think it dipped which honestly, girlboss move).
Other than that, a raven was used as a divine messenger at one point, but I think the much more interesting (and relevant) aspects of the raven is the general symbolism.
Ravens are usually seen as bad news - much like the snake, they get a bad rep. While they are often seen as bad omens, they can also be seen as beings of spiritual wisdom. They see more than others can, much like Eva. When the others start to do the whole 'We'll never kill each other!' it's Eva who disagrees, seeing the reality of the situation.
Based on the word 'Danganronpa' being associated with the game, we can assume she's correct, and that the bodies will start hitting the floor very soon.
Eva is wise and holds a lot of knowledge, but she is distrusted for reasons outwith her control. She didn't ask to be the ultimate liar - some random organisation sent her a letter one day putting that label on her.
Interestingly, ravens are the natural enemies of farmers... and Wolfgang has a distinct agricultural reference on his lapel.
To summarise: people don't like ravens, but they're very smart birds who can (in certain mythologies/cultures, at least), see beyond the surface level).
Toshiko Kayura:
Toshiko's assigned animal is a little harder to spot. Two flamingos are on her skirt as a decal, making them less obvious (especially during waist-up shots).
Tumblr media
Okay, so I'm no expert on this, but I'm pretty sure there aren't any flamingos in the Bible. Flamingos played a part in Egyptian beliefs, being associated with Ra, and they might actually be the original inspiration for phoenixes which... is kind of hilarious? The Aztecs saw them as sacred, and in Hindu culture they symbolise hamsa, a divine vehicle, which symbolises the realise from samsara, aka the cycle of suffering.
So... that could be a thing relating to Toshiko. She could be destined to act as a turning point in the narrative (either through death or through character development, same difference).
Or, we could go with the really obvious interpretation of 'flamingo = romance'. Which is very on-brand. Additionally, flamingos represent balance and elegance - mainly because of their 'standing on one leg' trick. Toshiko most likely strives to embody the qualities of a flamingo in these regards.
The use of flamingos in Toshiko's design might point to her being 'the heart' of the group. She's shown to be quite emotional (becoming flustered when challenged, avoiding the investigation, getting into an argument over gremlin-hood with Grace), despite trying to emulate a mature aura. She speaks in frivolous, convoluted imagery, which is peak fourteen-year-old behaviour, and if anything bad happens to her I will cry :D
Ulysses Wilhelm:
Rather than having a picture of an animal, Ulysses wears an owl pendant. Owls represent wisdom, and are particularly fitting for Ulysses due to him being more of a night owl.
Tumblr media
Biblically, owls are seen as unclean birds, alongside ravens. They aren't overly relevant, but are (allegedly, according to some random Bible forum) used to symbolise loneliness, desolation, guilt and mourning. In a broader sense, owls are seen as wise, critical-thinking creatures, and independent.
Because of this, I think Ulysses will fall into the Damon/Eva camp of thinking, due to his historical knowledge. Because if history's taught us anything, it's that people can't be trusted, they will self-sabotage, and murder is inevitable.
I don't have much else to say - Ulysses feels like an early victim/blackened candidate, unfortunately, so I don't think he'll be playing a major role narratively.
Desmond Hall:
This one's a little hard to spot immediately (and when I did spot it, I wasn't sure which animal it belonged to), but according to the concept art Desmond has a shark tooth earring.
Tumblr media
There are no sharks in the Bible. Sharks, apparently, symbolise protection and guidance, so I think Desmond will probably pair up with another character... which will lead to an untimely death, with a very sad flashback scene at the end of a trial. Or he'll survive, who says Biblical relevancy matters? Sharks are pretty cool and so is Desmond.
I think he'll be an optimist in the situation, but I... don't have much to say regarding his animal motif.
Grace Madison:
This one is pretty up there for the 'easiest to spot award'. Grace's animal is a rabbit, which can be seen by her (adorable) rabbit-eared visor.
Tumblr media
Biblically rabbits are pretty irrelevant, but symbolically they're very prominent. Rabbits are probably most famous for their easter connotations (you'd think they'd be Biblical, but no, it just says not to eat them). Rabbits are also known as lucky animals - 'rabbit feet' are seen as lucky talismans...
If Grace ends up with a severed foot, I'm going to lose my mind.
Anyway, since Grace is the resident 'reckless and crude' character, I would theorise her link to rabbits would be 'rebirth'. Rabbits are associated with spring, which is associated with rebirth. I think Grace (who is described as someone who burns every bridge she makes) will undergo the Fuyuhiko treatment and see a lot of character development.
Not much else for me to say here, but rabbits are generally seen as active animals (energiser bunny, the Scorbunny line), so... yay sports..?
Diana Venicia:
I do not trust this girl as far as I can throw her. I saw her across the room and thought, "No, you're evil", and the chameleon bracelet did not help her case.
Tumblr media
Like... not only does it suggest she's hiding something, or that she's a social chameleon, but it looks like a handcuff, that cannot be comfortable. And oddly enough, chameleons do feature in the Bible... and it's very odd, and very interesting.
Basically, chameleons conform to their surroundings through their unique abilities. God likes that for them, but not for humans - apparently, they should challenge things rather than just conforming to them. Which like, okay, someone changed their tune from "Don't do this one thing, no I will not elaborate". In actuality, what this means is "you should not be different on Monday to how you were on Sunday", aka, be #authentic.
Also, chameleons are seen as 'not standing up for what's right', so I guess that's where Diana falls on the morality spectrum, maybe possibly?
Diana is hiding something, she's on my mastermind radar but it feels a little too obvious? If she's not a mastermind, she hiding something and is a killer, nothing can redeem her from being shady in my eyes. I'm onto you, make-up girl...
(My guess is the beauty industry/Hollywood requires a degree of fakery, and she hates it, but she wanted to be successful so she gave into the fakery, and lost her true self in the process. And hey, maybe at some point she decided that she had to see the true twistedness of humanity via a killing game, who knows? Plus, make-up, that's very Junko-ish of her, just saying-)
Jean DeLamer:
Okay, so some people got 'owl' or 'flamingo', but this man got a whole dragon. And he cannot be more deserving of it, fly high king.
Tumblr media
I really didn't think there were dragons in the Bible, but apparently they get a mention (in all fairness, it's a real big book). Fun fact: Biblically, they are usually mentioned to reference sea monsters. On brand for our sea captain. Bad news though, dragons are pretty exclusively evil (sometimes straight-up Satan), and are vanquished by God. So... Not great for Jean, honestly, that's concerning.
Could he have a connection to the killing game? He could be a traitor of some sort, or he could try to rise up against the KG and get struck down.
Basically: Jean has no power here, he will lose every time, if the Bible-dragons are anything to go by.
Anyways, dragons are pretty relevant in... most cultures, so this is probably the most interesting thing I can dig up.
Jett Dawson:
In my original post, I mislabelled Jett's animal as a wolf. Somebody in the comments corrected me, pointing out that it's a coyote. Coyotes are closely related to wolves, so there's some symbolic overlap, but I'll rewrite the section anyways, because the original didn't shed much light on anything.
Tumblr media
Biblically, coyotes are in a bit of an odd spot. They're seen as cunning and dangerous for the most part, but in Isaiah's passage (disclaimer: I haven't read it, I'm doing the deeply unacademic thing of trusting 'straightforwardguidance'.com) he complains that coyotes and lizards are more grateful to him than humans. This is used to demean the coyote; a wild animal is better than people in Isaiah's eyes, placing them at the low end of societal importance (not literally, ofc).
Apparently, the bible also describes these animals as being wise, due to their hunting tactics. Coyotes will hunt rabbits as a team, with one tiring a rabbit out and another finishing it off. This little tidbit does not bode well for Grace, our rabbit. But, to be fair, the presence of a coyote wouldn't go well for most small animals.
I don't have too much to say about coyotes, beyond their obvious similarity to wolves. Wolves tend to hunt sheep (which gave them a bit of a negative biblical rep), but let's be real, a sheep isn't winning many battles out in the wild.
Jett strikes me as a 'tragic killer', like our usual chapter 2/4 killers. There's wildcard energy to him, though - I could see him killing, surviving or dying, but whatever happens, there'll be a plot point surrounding his face, it seems too interesting to not be a thing.
Kai Monteago:
Butterfly, on chest, let's go.
Tumblr media
Most obvious interpretation: social butterfly, he's an influencer.
Biblically, they're pretty irrelevant, but symbolically they're all about transformation. This could indicate character development, a change in tune, etc. Not much to say here, it could represent vulnerability (butterflies are fragile), but it's most likely a reference to the phrase social butterfly.
Mark 'Mayhem' Berskii:
His hat is, indeed, an alligator. At first I thought it was a dragon, then a crocodile, but the concept art confirms it to be an alligator.
Tumblr media
Google couldn't tell me much about Bible alligators, which was expected. What it can tell me is the symbolism behind them, though.
Alligators are cunning and wise. Which adds up here, Mark seems way smarter than he lets on. He makes a comment at the end of a non-stop debate (something about setting the trash fire) which suggests he's a critical thinker, seeing the misguided logic in the room.
They are also apex predators with a lot of strength which... is concerning, in terms of potential murderers. Since they've been around since the prehistoric age, alligators are seen as having an ancient, primal aura about them.
I feel there's more than meets the eye with Mark - he'll carry a key discovery or two, just you wait.
Wenona:
Wenona is the girlboss we need, as well as the girlboss we deserve, no further questions. Her animal decal is a little less obvious than others', being bear pawprints at the bottom of her coat.
Tumblr media
My favourite Bible story ever (because it's hilarious out of context) is the one about Elisha and the bears, where two bears maul forty-two children because they made fun of a guy. So, maybe don't get on her bad side via mockery.
Interestingly, bears are used to symbolise cruelty and self-servedness which... adds up here, I guess.
Symbolically, bears are a little more cuddly than the Bible makes them out to be. They're known for hibernation, making them quite patient and cautious animals. Bears are grounded animals and represent strength, being fearsome predators.
Wenona is very set in her views, and appears to be unwavering, much like a bear.
Eloise Taulner:
Eloise wears a swan pin in her hair, making that her signature animal. Swans are graceful and vicious; a fascinating combination for a character like Eloise.
Tumblr media
In the Bible, swans are everything you'd assume a white bird to be. It's all very 'this bird is the serene love of god, do not eat it, but for different reasons'.
Symbolically, swans are loyal birds, being of the 'mates for life' variety. Something interesting to mention is the concept of a swan song - a song that laments death, said to be the most beautiful song ever sung by a swan, despite the birds being far from natural singers. In Greek mythology, swans were sacred to both Aphrodite and Apollo, with Apollo being the god of music.
Which presents the possibility of a friendship between Mark and Elodie, with him being 'music' and her being a swan.
Swans are very powerful birds, so Eloise's character arc will probably involve her becoming stronger in terms of willpower and confidence.
Ingrid Grimwall:
This one's a little harder to spot, but Ingrid's animal symbol is on her bag, in the form of a lion.
Tumblr media
Lions are generally seen as brave, proud animals. The main Biblical story that comes to mind is the story of Daniel, who was thrown into a den of lions. A lion's roar is intended to paralyse its foes with fear, but can its bite match its bark? I suspect Ingrid will be a big talker, but less keen to take actual initiative. Male lions are known for being less active than their pride members, with the female lions doing the hunting.
Although, you could argue that a lion is a natural leader. These qualities don't need to be exclusive though - why not be a leader and a layabout?
Besides that, there's pride and family and strength, but the less prominent placement of Ingrid's emblem tells me she'll be less fearsome than her classmates.
Cassidy Amber:
Cassidy's a little bit different from the others. Her animal motif doesn't have a specific portrayal of the animal (much like Wenona's and Ulysses'), and hers is repeated as a pattern - Cassidy wears tights with a spiderweb pattern.
Tumblr media
Now, spiders are pretty well known for trapping things. It's kind of their whole deal. This gives Cassidy some serious mastermind vibes to me, especially when coupled with the fact that she's married to the content grind, loves games, and has a lot of money to throw around.
But anyway, the Bible just kind of complains about their webs being fragile, which could be interpreted as 'her fanbase isn't a true connection to others, they'll abandon her the second someone new catches their attention'. In reality, the Bible doesn't hold up for most of these, but like... it's interesting, right?
Spiders could be described as patient killers. They weave intricate webs for their victims and wait for the opportune moment to strike. Spiders are often feared, with arachnophobia being one of the most popular phobias. Cassidy herself is capable of projecting an unsettling aura and might be described as unnerving.
Fun fact: Red spiders specifically symbolise wealth, passion and excitement, which lines up pretty well with our pro-gamer.
In Conclusion:
I spent way too long making this.
Also, the Bible was pretty useless for most of these BUT the Bible reflects a lot of general perceptions (because it set quite a few of them), so it was sometimes interesting, I think, I'm tired, send help, goodnight!
(If you've made it this far, say hi or something, this took three hours and for what?)

She wasn’t doing anything wrong.
In fact, she wasn’t even doing anything. It wasn’t as if she had acted upon any of the… interesting ideas her brain had decided to come up with to torment her late at night. She would chalk it all up to some temporary insanity and, honestly, given the amount of trauma and stress she had gone through ever since she had literally died and come back as a creature of nightmares… it wasn’t as if she could be blamed.
Right?
Caroline held back a sigh, slumping in her chair as she gripped tight onto the table, careful not to break it in her frustration. She could leave. She should leave. Except… she had decided being home all alone was too dangerous given the directions her mind had started to wander, and she could really use the distraction of being around other people.
If only the person she was trying to distract herself from hadn’t decided on a night out as well.
Klaus was shooting pool, out of all things. His siblings playing against him. It seemed almost unreal watching these creatures who seemed to be older than time squabbling and bickering. But what looked very real was Klaus’ backside every time he leaned towards the table.
She bit her lowerlip, her traitorous eyes refusing to look away. God. This was getting ridiculous.
Awful, despicable men who ran her (now ex) boyfriend out of town should not have perfect shoulder-to-waist ratio. Their shirts should not cling to their biceps like that. And they most definitely weren’t allowed to have curls like an angel’s falling over their forehead like that.
She watched as he threw some barb or another after a perfect shot, transfixed. And her gaze must have been burning holes into his back, because he turned around, searching her. And curving his lips into the most sinful smirk when he caught her staring.
Caroline bit down a groan.
He was awful. Terrible. Disgusting. She had to remember that.
Even if Tyler was off to god knows where with god knows who. Even if he had broken up with her through a phone call. Even if her bed felt far too empty and lonely and cold. And even if her mind had become particularly creative and convincing and really, what would a thousand years of experience even feel like?
And maybe, if she just went there once to get this itching done with, she could get this out of her head and move on and-
Nope. Not going there.
She forced herself to close her eyes, even as her breath quickened, images pouring in her brain in flashes of kisses and entangled limbs and the overwhelming scent of him. And-
Caroline opened her eyes to find Klaus sitting across from her at her table, a knowing smile on his lips.
“Good evening, love.”

Who in sskk would you say has the higher IQ?
IQ as in, conventionally smart? Then definitely Atsushi does. I'm sorry. I've said it many times before, but I don't think Akutagawa is a particularly perceptive person. Or witty. Or intelligent in general. It's due to external factors, he never got the chance to have anything that could resemble a proper education; but it's also a matter of his nature, he's just so impulsive, and narrow-minded, and stubborn, he really has the thickest skull ever. But seriously, especially in a world full of geniuses, Akutagawa simply doesn't shine for sharpness of mind, and is way too impulsive and instincts-driven to be a person that relies on reflection or rationality. Everything that Akutagawa does is the epitome of irrational, it's one of the greatest appeals of the character.
Atsushi is smart,,,, I've talked about this also, and I think it's less sustained by canon than for Akutagawa, but I like to think he's a very observant and perceptive person whose intelligence doesn't show because he's constantly surrounded by geniuses, but still he is smart. When it comes to observations skills, I find it easy for him to have them due to his childhood of ill-treatment and abuse: as a defense mechanism, he learnt to be especially observative of people's behaviour in order to tell what sets people off and be able to prevent any escalation, I think that's a widely shared abuse survivor experience. Something among these lines is shown in chapter 51:
Tumblr media
I also think Atsushi is a very fast learner. He's observant, and that results in him constantly absorbing other people's knowledge. He's often asking for explanations for Dazai and Ranpo's reasonings, and although I know more often than not it solves an expositive role in the storytelling picture, there's still the fact that it makes Atsushi a person who's constantly trying to understand the reality surrounding him. Atsushi is also shown to be very cool-minded and calculating in fight: from him sliding under Akutagawa and attacking him from behind successfully eluding having to face him front-off in chapter 4, to him retracting his tiger limbs to escape Rashomon's bonds in chapter 12, to the strategy he elaborated with Tanizaki (and his ability to catch up on that) to defeat Lucy in chapter 16, to his attempt to outsmart Fitzgerald in chapter 34 (that, although failed, was still driven by rational thinking nonetheless), and the list could go on. The way in fight Atsushi is shown to ponder over and implement the advices people like Dazai or Mori offered him further makes me believe he's really good at absorbing information. And Atsushi is probably book smart, too! He's compelled by reading to the point he would even risk the orphanage director's punishment just to sneak into the library and read (not explicitly supported by canon, but I can take a guess). According to the second guidebook, he spends his leisure time borrowing books from the library and studying. Overall, he really seems to be rational in all the places Akutagawa is on the contrary driven by impulses¹.
It's like… A physics law when it comes to sskk, that Akutagawa will have the most despicable trait while Atsushi has the trait that is conventionally considered the best; or at least that's as far as my characterization of them goes. Atsushi is beautiful, Akutagawa is ugly². Atsushi is polite, Akutagawa is rude. Atsushi is pure, Akutagawa is stained. Atsushi is smart, Akutagawa isn't. Atsushi is lovable, Akutagawa is destined to cause repulsion in everyone he meets³. In the end, none of this matters: they're no different where it counts, that is, Atsushi isn't any more morally just than Akutagawa is. Atsushi in not any more good than Akutagawa is (I actually suspect the contrary is true). But as far as appearances go, it's still important to portray them as opposites, because Akutagawa being unlovable and Atsushi receiving all the love Akutagawa didn't get for being his contrary - even though deep down they're the same - is almost everything their relationship is about. It's also a big part of why they act like they do towards each other: it's source of Akutagawa's bottomless envy for Atsushi; it's source of how devoted and loyal he will grow to be for him - reaching the point of giving his life for him -, because he can't see Atsushi as anything but perfection. It's source of confidence and of that certain justified hatred towards Akutagawa Atsushi feels because to his eyes Akutagawa is about the worst person to have ever walked on earth. It's source to their wish to annihilate the other as the opposite they can't exist at the same time of. It's the reason Akutagawa had to die, because he's not the good one. Overall it's also expression of Akutagawa's thematic struggle to be good and unavoidable failure at that because of the constraints of a narrative that never wanted him to be good.
But I also think they can make it work. More precisely, I think sskk can make it work when both of them can overcome and defeat the narrative dichotomy they found themselves stuck into: by recognizing that deep common ground of “we're the same” and that where it matters, in morals, neither of them is better or worse than the other. The Beast universe exemplifies that for us readers, but they don't know Beast, so they'll have to realize it by their own. About that, I think Akutagawa already caught on, because he was faster to call out the hypocrisy of Atsushi's good guy façade, and from that it's a short distance to realizing that, as much as he hates to admit it, at his core Atsushi is not that different from himself. It's taking a little more for Atsushi to realize, because it's harder to get down from that higher moral pedestal he believes himself to be on, but with his whole reevaluating Akutagawa after he stopped killing and sacrificed himself for him (and then saved him again. And then showed him how formidable of a team they are when they find a common ground.), I think he's getting there.
Tl;dr: Atsushi is smart and Akutagawa is stupid and yes it fits their personalities, but way more importantly it's consistent with the themes they carry that translate in what their relationship is like.
¹ For further reading on how Atsushi can be witty, please refer to @/gloomierdays's tags on this post. ² For further reading on how Atsushi and Akutagawa's looks can be used to reflect their characters themes, please refer to this post. ³ For further reading on how Akutagawa being not smart (as far as conventional definitions of smart go) ties to his character themes, please refer to this post.

The worst part of trying to make a story/AU for despicable me is just how damn inconsistent the timeline is.
Like- ok, we clearly start with the Minions Movie taking place in 1968. I don’t think Scarlet and Herb’s ages are ever specified, but that’s not particularly important. What we do know is that Gru is 8 when he first steals the crown.
Here’s where things get confusing, Minions: Rise of Gru. We can assume based off Gru that it doesn’t take place that long after the first Minions movie. It’s also clearly some time during the 70s, based off Belle Bottom’s overall design and gadgets (like her disco ball mace).
Here’s where things go off the rails in terms of piecing together a coherent timeline;
Balthazar Bratt.
Based off of the wiki for him (I know it’s not the most reliable source, but people on fandom know what they’re doing for the most part), Bratt was born 1973, making him younger than Gru. Now, that’s not necessarily the problem, until we get to the fact that his show aired from 1985 to 1987. Gru would be in his late teens at the youngest. Again, this doesn’t seem like a problem, until we bring in Dru. In Despicable Me 3, when they are infiltrating Bratt’s lair, Dru pulls one of the dolls out of a box and says “Oh, I had one of these when I was a kid.” Which seems.. odd, considering he’s Gru’s twin and would be the same age as him.
There are some other characters who were never given the explicit ages of (that I can remember), like Silas and Vector’s dad. Both make appearances in Minions: Rise of Gru, so you’d assume that they’d be much older by the trilogy, but they aren’t.
Also, does it ever say what year the trilogy movies take place in? Like- since Bratt is in his 40s, the year is at earliest 2013 and at latest 2022, which is confusing considering the technology in some scenes.
Sorry for the rant, I just haven’t seen anyone bring this up except for CinemaSins (kinda)

Greetings! I've read your work on Ao3 and I absolutely love your PtN content. Although the work is fanmade, the characterisation and interactions of Chief and sinners seem so on point to me (^^)
With that being said, I would like to request a SFW and NSFW headcanon of top!Chief and one my favourite sinners in the game - Coquelic. She considered Chief as one of her " flowers " in her 100% compliance document and was more accepting to them during her interrogation. It'd be nice to include how Coquelic dealt with admirers who were a bit too close to Chief. Thank you!
I'm glad you like my works! I hope this one is up to scratch as well -- I worry that I highlighted certain aspects of Coquelic's personality too much and others not enough, but judging by that last bit of the request, I think this should hopefully satisfy you. If not, feel free to send in a new request!
NSFW content and mild violence below the cut.
SFW+NSFW headcanons for Coquelic with top!Chief
What Coquelic wants, Coquelic gets. This is a fact of life, and the Mentor of the Garden will take what she wants with her own hands if need be.
At first, this was the Chief’s life. Though she knew two of her flowers were besotted with them – and what silly girls they were indeed – Coquelic cared little for them herself. As if the way they chained Sinners with those despicable shackles wasn’t enough, that disgusting Hush had asked her to look out for them… and there’s no way she was going to do anything that monster said.
Still, despite Coquelic’s convictions, she too ended up charmed by the Chief, just the same as her flowers. She went from wanting to take their life, to wanting to take their heart. Metaphorically, because Coquelic had taken hearts literally before, but it was a terribly messy and bloody business and more importantly, it left her victim dead, which was no longer the fate she desired for the Chief.
Still, for a while after Coquelic had made the decision to pursue the Chief, they were left with a feeling of bone-deep dread and a chill down their spine. Coquelic seemed to be popping up out of nowhere more and more often lately, and they wondered if she’d changed her mind about wanting to kill them.
Coquelic, of course, isn’t capable of doing anything in half measures. She was aware of how she was unnerving her adored one, but saw it as a necessary side-effect – after all, her confession had to be perfect. She already had a plan in mind; she just needed to find the right flower to bloom…
One day, Chief would find themself on their way to a meeting with a particularly snobby member of the City Council. They didn’t like this guy, not at all; the way he talked about Sinners was worse than your average Eastsider, likening them to diseased animals. He had been pushing to undo all the work Chief had been doing to reduce the stigma about Sinners, and though Chief had been managing to prevent any catastrophic consequences thus far, his power and influence was not to be underestimated.
Still, when they walked into the councilor’s office, nothing could have prepared them for what they saw.
The councilor was slumped in his chair, fresh blood coagulating into vibrant red Mania roses. Perched on the edge of his desk like she belonged there was none other than Coquelic, grinning as she twirled a lock of her hair around her finger. “Well, Chief? What do you think of my confession?”
They could only stare, mouth agape. “Coquelic- You- What- How-”
Coquelic sighed, tutting as if it was so very obvious. “My dear Chief, I know this guy’s been bothering you. We can’t have that, can we? So I took care of him for you.” She idly plucked one of the roses from the man’s body, and the Chief was too stunlocked to react as she sashayed over to them and tucked it behind their ear. “Forget about that ugly thing, and instead focus on these beautiful flowers that bloomed from the rot. Red roses… You know what they mean, don’t you?”
Chief’s brain was just barely able to comprehend that Coquelic was – confessing to them? This was all too much to handle. “Coquelic,” they managed to mutter, their voice hoarse, “go back to the Bureau. We’ll discuss this there.”
Coquelic pouted. “Oh, Chief, you break my poor little heart. But, if that’s what you want…” She disappeared in the blink of an eye, before the Chief could comprehend her words.
Covering up the councilor’s death was a pain – the 9th Agency had to get involved. Still, Chief knew that if the news got out that a very vocally anti-Sinner councilor had been assassinated by the Mentor of the Garden, it would cause an even bigger headache. As a result, it was several days before they managed to make good on their promise to speak to Coquelic back at the Bureau.
“Chief, what took you so long?” she whined as she noticed them approach her cell, sprawling across an ornate couch she’d managed to get brought in for her, somehow. “Don’t you know it’s rude to keep a lady waiting? I thought you stood me up!”
Chief took a deep breath and refused to respond to Coquelic’s provocations. “Coquelic, I’m… willing to go out with you. But on one condition. Don’t kill anyone else.”
Coquelic laughed, giving the Chief a smile that was both terrifying and hauntingly beautiful. “Is that your only request? Very well! I won’t kill anyone else in your name~” A statement that left no doubt that Coquelic’s days as an assassin were far from over, but Chief expected no less from her.
Coquelic demanded a lot of the Chief's attention, but also spoiled them. Flowers, custom-tailored clothes and commissioned trinkets, chocolates, the whole nine yards; Chief was genuinely worried they’d run out of space for all these gifts.
Being with Coquelic meant that the Chief also got to spend a lot of time around her Garden. Seeing how kind and protective she could be towards her flowers made them realize that Coquelic wasn’t just a madwoman; the stunt she’d pulled to confess was simply a grandiose gesture to get their attention.
She was an absolute drama queen, that was true, but she wasn’t as crazy as she first seemed. Indeed, she was perfectly capable of being serious and lowkey when she wanted to – it was just that she rarely wanted to be.
The scariest part of Coquelic was simply how territorial she could be. Though she kept her promise about not killing anyone for the Chief, they definitely noticed how some of their admirers would fall rather badly ill for a couple of weeks after being a little too bold with their affection. They were certain that Coquelic was giving them very small doses of poison, enough to cause disruptive illness without endangering their lives, but they could never quite catch her in the act.
Coquelic was also a very touchy person – she’d often drag the Chief to Garden-owned bathhouses for private outings. Baths with Coquelic were always a sensual experience; the Mentor of the Garden had an incredible body and she wasn’t shy about showing it off. She made the act of bathing seem like its own personal showing just for the Chief; water streaming down her breasts, her curves tracing a hypnotic outline of her body. It was nothing short of mesmerizing.
However, these moments also revealed the various scars across Coquelic’s body, the ones that were just barely covered by her clothes or concealed with makeup. She didn’t have as many as warriors like Zoya or Ninety-Nine, of course, but she still had a much larger amount than the Chief expected. They didn’t dare bring it up, but they couldn’t help but wonder about the stories behind these scars.
As sensual as these moments were, the actual sex was left firmly in the bedroom. Coquelic was a pillow princess, but Chief was a service top, so it all worked out very well in the end.
Besides, even if Coquelic didn’t do much to help, she was still an active participant in other ways. She preferred to have the Chief’s face buried in her arousal, which meant they spent a lot of time between her legs, and she wasn’t shy about her lewd gasps and moans, nor about telling the Chief how much of a good little flower they were. Her silky sweet voice and the taste of her ambrosia-like arousal was more than enough to bring the Chief to their own climax – sometimes without Coquelic’s permission, which would be sorely punished.
Indeed, Coquelic is no stranger to kink. It’s fairly common for her to blindfold Chief with silky ribbons, and on the days where she lets them ride her instead, she often also binds their hands behind their back. If she’s really in a mood, she’ll even use the ribbons to gag them. It’s all very artistic, of course.
Among the many gifts Chief has received from Coquelic is copious amounts of lacy lingerie. It’s her expectation that Chief will wear them, and she’ll kick up a fuss if she discovers they’re not.
Also, Coquelic is more than willing to use her fangs when biting, so drawing a bit of blood is par for the course when it comes to intimacy with her.
In the end, Coquelic was a complicated person, and indeed, a relationship with her was often messy. But she had qualities that Chief admired, too, when she wasn’t purposefully messing about: loyalty and a deep love for the people who were hers. So, much to the Chief's surprise…
In the end, they truly fell for Coquelic too.

Male Homosociality and War Crimes in The Patriot
Of all the problems The Patriot as a story creates for itself, the most interesting for me has always been this: how do you craft a villain when the hero is also a war criminal? It appears to me the filmmakers had a simple answer to this question staring them right in their faces, so why does a story that leans so heavily on the rumor that Banastre Tarleton habitually ordered the execution of surrendering Continental soldiers do absolutely nothing with the rumor that he habitually raped and allowed his men to rape colonial women? Surely, that would have helped to make Colonel Tavington as despicable as we are clearly meant to find him, particularly since the Patriot soldiers do not engage in rape, at least not literally. Instead, both Benjamin Martin and Tavington are tried by juries of their peers with Martin being nearly universally adored and Tavington being as nearly universally despised. This approach creates two problems. First, it means the Patriots, who something tells me are the people the audience is meant to sympathize with, are okay with some very fucked up actions both past and present. It also makes it hard to justify the Patriots' hatred for the British as whole when the audience sees how little support Tavington has.
Somewhat ironically given the myths about Tarleton, the only characters to directly mention rape in the film are Patriots, a father and son. As the Martin family anticipates survivors of the battle being in near proximity to them, Nathan attempts to titillates his siblings with this dire prediction: "They'll probably kill us men and do lord knows what to you women." In addition to shock among some in the audience, this elicits the question that always arises when a child says something incredibly fucked up: where did you hear that? Judging from her disgusted reaction, I do not think it was his caregiver Abigale. We get an answer some months later when Benjamin describes the events leading up to the Fort Wilderness massacre. "[The French and Cherokess] had killed all the settlers. The men . . . with the women and some of the children they had . . . we buried them." In the moment, Martin's hesitancy to name the particular violence these settlers suffered seems to speak to respect for them, but if so, he failed to convey that to either the son who makes the prediction earlier on or the even younger boy who giggles at it. This is the first time violence is referenced as a means of male bonding; it is certainly not the last.
The conversation between Martin and his oldest son referenced above is bizarre for a couple of reasons. Not only does the narrative twist Martin's confession to war crimes against the French and Cherokees in reprisal into evidence of his morality (he feels so bad about it!), but Gabriel is thoroughly nonplussed by this confession. He shifts the topic to his murdered brother and his desire to avenge him, but not at the expense of "the cause." Why is Gabriel so eager to take his father's supposed contrition at face value when he has personally seen him both hack a man's back to shreds with a tomahawk and participate in the murder of surrendering British soldiers a hell of a lot more recently than the French and Indian War? By the end of his life, Gabriel does more than tolerate his father's violent past. He approaches Tavington's prone form, believing him to be mortally wounded, to repeat it.
Bonding with his son through discussion of war crimes is not an anomaly among Martin's relationships. When he and Major Villeneuve recruit in the tavern, two of the men who sign up are acquaintances of Martin's from the previous war. One of them inquires about bounties and Martin give the intriguing response of "No scalp bounty this time, Rollins, but I'll pay for the gear of any redcoat you kill." How Rollins is going to prove the gear belonged to redcoats he killed who were not wounded or surrendering after Martin issues his orders against such conduct is a mystery the movie never clears up . When the other acquaintance, Billings, asks Martin if he is one of "that sort--" the sort Gabriel believes should not serve in the militia because, well, they're war criminals--Martin jokingly tells him, "You're the sort that gives that sort a bad name." Just boys being boys!
My favorite use of war crimes to further male bonding is the bizarre relationship between Martin and his second in command, Major Villeneuve. Initially the two grate on each other: Martin tortured French soldiers to death, while Villeneuve is French. The two offenses are presented as carrying basically equal weight. Ultimately, though, Villeneuve's objection to Martin is less that he committed war crimes but that he forbids Villeneuve from doing the same. But over time, they come to see each other in a different light. When Martin greets Villeneuve after the militia's ill-fated furlough, Villeneuve responds with a tongue in cheek, "Where else can I kill a few redcoats? Perhaps a few wounded ones when you're not looking." That Martin laughs nervously at this joke should be surprising, but it really isn't. While we haven't seen any wounded or surrendering men killed since Martin's order, nor have we seen any in militia custody. Has Villeneuve had a change of heart, or is Martin simply skilled in looking the other way? Later, Martin asks Villeneuve what color his slain daughters' eyes were as they march into the final battle, psyching him up to go and do their favorite activity together: vengeance! This shared priority, the only thing they have in common, outweighs their shortcomings in each other's eyes. Liberté, fraternité, and all that jazz.
Most of Martin's screentime, and he is in almost every scene, is spent developing his homosocial bonds, but even British men seem to regard Tavington with varying degrees of contempt, disgust, and fear. This lack of fellowship even characterizes his scenes with his own Green Dragoons. There are only two opportunities for dragoon comradery depicted in the movie: one where Tavington interrupts his men at dinner and one where he is grooming himself in the creek while they eat around their campfires. Tavington being left out of eating and drinking in particular becomes a recurring theme. His first meeting with Cornwallis, in the extended cut, happens after the Battle of Camden when the British officers are celebrating their victory. Tavington arrives late, apparently hungry from the way he immediately reaches for the food on the table, withdrawing his hand when Cornwallis draws closer to scold him. As he's dressing down Tavington, Cornwallis takes food from the same table and feeds it to his Great Danes. The exchange ends with Cornwallis proposing a toast, turning his back on Tavington and his second, who do not have glasses. The scene establishes that his role in winning a battle in no way makes Tavington's treatment of the enemy or civilians less odious, and his fellow officers are so united in this that no one so much as blinks when their general is incredibly rude to him. Over the course of the movie, they all maintain this conviction, except for one.
Producer Dean Devlin's describes Tavington as "seduc[ing]" Cornwallis into allowing him his brutal tactics, and this seems especially apt given the way their relationship develops on screen. As they grow closer tactically, they also grow closer physically. In their scene after Cornwallis ices Tavington out of his tent, Cornwallis remains seated at his desk while demanding that Tavington, who is standing on the opposite side, cease his brutal methods. In the scene following Cornwallis's humiliation at Martin's hands during the prisoner exchange, he is again seated at a table, eating dinner, while Tavington stands on the other side. From this point forward, though, there is a marked shift in the two men's positions. Cornwallis motions Tavington forward, and Tavingon approaches, putting as much space between himself and Cornwallis as we see between the general and the servant waiting on him as Cornwallis says, "I want you to capture [Martin]." If he intends to remind Tavington of his own servile position, the message does not register. Tavington takes a little stroll, peeks at Cornwallis's map, and helps himself to a glass of his claret, a stand-in for the glass he was denied at their first meeting. He assures Cornwallis, "I alone will assume the full mantle of responsibility, rendering you blameless" for his future crimes in pursuit of Martin. In light of Devlin's description of this scene, it does sound a bit like, Don't worry, babe, no one is going to know about this but you and me.
It is a ridiculous claim. When the Green Dragoons go on a veritable murder and arson spree after months of abstinence, it does not take a genius to realize that maybe the general of the whole fucking British army might have something to do with that. Nonetheless, by the end of this scene Cornwallis and Tavington are standing side by side for the first time in the movie. Their last scene is even more elicit. Cornwallis walks in on Tavington having his wound dressed to warn him against an early charge, the very same thing he scolds him for in their first scene, but this time Tavington is only in his shirt and his hair is loose and . . . it's a little on the nose, to be honest. And they're all alone. As powerful as Cornwallis is, he is also the only person Tavington ever convinces to condone his actions, and he can only do so by offering assurances he could not possibly grant. What does not change is the conviction of everyone in the British Army, Tavington included, that they will live and be remembered in infamy until the end of time if they do Bad Things to the Patriots. Meanwhile, the Patriots are bonding with each other almost exclusively through planning and doing Bad Things to them.
There are double-standards, and then there's this bullshit. Martin commits a dizzying amount of fuckery ranging from sending the Cherokees pieces of their fighters in bags to terrorize them into compliance to ordering his young sons to kill soldiers to apparently talking about rape in front of those sons in a way that left them thinking it is something to laugh about, and he is seen as a hero and a loving father by everyone around him. Tavington walks into a tent full of his fellow officers after a battle he helped win, and they all look at him like "Who invited Murder Molly?" Martin's men are devoted to him not in spite of his past war crimes but because of them, and the movie's insistence that he has changed his ways is, in the most generous terms, feeble. The thinly veiled homoeroticism of Tavingtion and Cornwallis's relationship only serves to underscore how marginal their position that war crimes can be justified under the right circumstances is among the British. Among the Patriots, that position appears to be standard.
Representing Tarleton's dragoons as the rapists some people of the time believed they were would obviously not have been great from a historical perspective, but it would be a drop in the ocean of inaccuracies the movie is adrift in. And it would have at least made the redcoats as bad as the characters the audience is meant to support! Both sides ultimately do terrible things, but they are framed by the narrative very differently in ways that inadvertently present the British in a favorable light. While the Patriots treat the vilest of war's excesses with understanding and sometimes even levity, the British have a horror of the idea that war exceeds the limits of the battlefield that is hard to fathom in professional soldiers. In the homosocial world of The Patriot, the ultimate measure of virtue lies not in actions but in the approval of other men.

The Arrangement (Rengoku x Reader)- Chapter 2
Arranged marriage series
You and Kyojuro have a demon tailing you, but Kyojuro is unsure of its exact location or if it's even just a single demon. He can't risk your safety by prematurely attacking, so he is forced to play the waiting game. Will you make it out unscathed?
Warnings: mentions of Alcoholism, verbal abuse, arranged marriage, and cannon typical violence.
Kyojuro's always been a fighter. He's always stood up for what he believes is right, and while it's brought him great inconveniences at times, he's never once regretted staying true to himself and his mother's wishes. Even then, as he was faced with your unknown foe, the only thing that echoed in his mind was the promise he made to you, and he had every intention of fulfilling it. Even as Kyojuro made the realization that there was more than one demonic presence, his determination wasn't shaken in the slightest. Nothing was going to harm you as long as he still stood.
Kyojuro was on guard, keen senses looking for any sudden shifts in the air. Then he felt it; the figure behind you both was picking up speed, and quickly closing in on you both. The time to attack would be soon, he had to be ready, and he was. As you neared a particularly shaded part of the trail, a figure leaped out at you with an animalistic growl and unquestionable blood lust. Within seconds, Kyojuro had his sword drawn, and he was in position to strike down apone his demonic foe, though things didn't go the way he expected...
"Son of a-" you jumped in surprise as your fist made swift contact with what appeared to be a demon's nose, which released a sickening crunch. The demon hissed as it stumbled back, body colliding with a nearby tree, despratly clutching its now bloodied nose in minor horror, "Y-you bitch, how dare you!?" the demon screeched as a stream of blood escaped in between its long fingers, " I think you broke it! How the hell did such a pathetic small thing like you break my nose!!!"
'Di-did she just punch that demon in the face!?!' Kyojuros' face was stuck in a confused smile before he came to his senses and quickly leapt towards the demon. Ready to finish the job, though this attempt like the last was also interrupted by a yell.
"Rengoku-San, duck!" Kyojuro followed your instructions and narrowly missed what would have surely been a fatal blow to the back of his head.
'So I was right about there being more than one demon, but it seems they have teleportation abilities...' Kyojuro turned to face the second demon who donded a cocky grin, showing off its razor-sharp ivory fangs.
"Oooo, a slayer! This should be interesting." The first demon cackles menacingly before lunging a Kyojuro with inhumane speed. Kyojuro swiftly jumps to the right before bringing his blade down on the fowl creature's neck, severing it as if it were butter.
Kyojuros' attention then turned to the second demon, who seemed angrier at her fallen companions failer than the slayer who had debilitated him, "He was always overconfident! Damn it, why didn't he ever listen!? He's better off dead anyway!" While Kyojuro agreed that the demon was overconfident and foolishly impulsive, he was disgusted that the demons comrade would go as far as to be glade he was slain.
"He was your comrade, and you feel he's better off dead? Despicable, you demons truly have no compassion in your hearts! Even for those of your own kind!" Kyojuro readied his sword before quickly dashing forward with God like speed. You could have sworn you saw flames dance around his blade as he moved, "FIRST FORM: UNKNOWING FIRE!" You were in awn as you watched as he made a horizontal slash aimed at the demon's neck. The demon narrowly missed the powerful assault, jumping away at the last possible moment, though she didn't get away unscathed. Her arm appeared to have been severed and blood gushed from the wound. The demonic woman was less than pleased to say the least, "You damn bastard! Look what you did to my arm! How dare you?!" The blood lust was apparent in how she lunged at Rengoku. Her single arm was stretched out, and razor-sharp claws aimed for his face. Rengoku didn't seem to be phased in the slightest, you didn't know whether to be amazed or horrified at this fact, "SECOND FORM: RISING SCORCHING SUN!" But it seems you had nothing to worry for, as you saw him release an arching vertical slash upwards that decapitated the demon instantly. You found yourself utterly speechless...
"Holy shit- you're a demon slayer?" You looked as if you were a fish out of water. Everything made sense now - his broad, muscular frame, the Katana (which you had no clue how it didn't draw the attention of pedestrians), and so much more. The only thing missing was his uniform.
"Yes, I sure am! I have been for a while now!" His voice boomed out only to be interrupted by an irritated voice.
"Hey you fuckers! Can you shut up? I'm not done disintegrating yet! I don't want the last thing to hear to be you two philandering!" Your eyes go wide as you hear the voice of the woman, not even focusing on her inappropriate comment.
'What the fuuuuuu-' you take a step back, bumping into something warm and firm. That something was Rengoku, not that you cared all that much in at moment you were too busy trying to not lose your crap while listening to her severed head talking.
"Rengoku, why is she still - ya know?" You covered your fear and disgust with a calm exterior as you looked at the man behind you.
"Demons can talk until their mouths are burnt away, but there's no need to worry, she can't cause you any harm from here on, and even if she could I wouldn't allow it." Gone was the booming voice from earlier, and in its place was a calm and comforting voice. If you had any doubts earlier, they dissipated with his assurance. You couldn't help the blush that spread across your face as you looked into his beautiful tricolored eyes. You found yourself wanting to know more about mysterious man.
"We're under an hour from my family estate. If you want, we can take a break once we exit the forest?" Apone feeling his breath on your cheek you came to the realization you were still leaning against him and quickly moved away in embarrassment. Hoping to save yourself from further humiliation, you schooled your expression into one of disinterest and declined his offer, "Thank you for your consideration, but I'll be fine."
Kyojuro nodded in agreement, and so you both continued along the shaded trail. Thankfully, you didn't have any other surprise demon attacks before you made it out of the forest.
"(l/n)-san, if I may ask, how are you familiar with the Demon Slayer corps? Not many people know of its existence." Kyojuro looked at you with curious eyes, and after a moment of contemplation you decided you didn't see the harm in telling him, "My father was a slayer before his death." Kyojuro gave you a sad smile, but unlike others, there didn't seem to be pity behind it, but understandment of some kind.
"I'm sorry to hear about your father. There's always risk of not returning home in our line of work, but you never truly realize how quickly life can be taken away until you lose someone..." You looked at your hands, deliberating how to respond.
"That just makes life more sacred... the idea of growing old and dying... leaving something for the next generation, it's a beautiful thing." You say simply not turning to meet your companion's ruby and golden orbs.
'I hardly know this woman, but something about her is......different?' Kyojuro yurned to know more about you. The way you spoke...was oddly familiar. The DeJa'Vu it brought him was undeniable, but not unwelcomed. You reminded him slightly of someone, but who, he could not place....
"How long have you been in the corps? You said a while back there, right?" You question as he eagerly nodded in conformation.
"Yes, i first joined when I was 14, so almost 6 years, I'd say." He states proudly. "That's a long time for a slayer. You must have skill of the highest caliber." The man only let out a Harty laugh, "Why thank you (l/n)- San, you're too kind!" You couldn't help the smile that broke through your calm facade, and only for a moment, you both forgot you weren't just two young people conversing in the hopes of making a new friend. It was a happy moment, but as soon as it started it ended leaving a bittersweet taste in your mouth because, in the end, no matter how much you wanted to forget, you were betrothed to one another. With this thought in mind, you continued on your way to the Rengoku estate, a heavy weight wearing down apone you.
As Kyojuro promised, it wasn't too long before you reached the estate, and as you stood Infront of the proud entrance into the estate, you tried to fight the anxiousness that constricted itself around you in a vice like death grip.
"My little brother has been looking forward to your arrival! I don't think there's a thing in the estate he hasn't cleaned in preparation." Kyojuro's assurance helped cool your nerves before he pushed open the gate, revealing a young boy who bore a striking resemblance to himself. Said boy quickly set his broom aside before running to meet you both.
"Aniue, I'm glad to see you both had a safe trip! I was worried when I saw it was nearing nighfall and you still hadn't arrived." The young boy let out a sigh of relief as he neared and saw his brother was unscathed.
"Sorry for worrying you, Senjuro. There was a little hiccup on the way here, but we made it before night fall, thankfully!" The boisterous man smiled before stepping aside and jestering to you, "This is (l/n)-San! (L/n)-san, this is my little brother Senjuro, who I was telling you about."
You ignored the young boys' prominent blush at that comment and bowed politely, "It a pleasure to meet you, Rengoku-kun." Senjuro bowed in return before replying, "You can just call me Senjuro if you'd like. I don't mind!"
You smiled at the flustered boy before you, "Well then, I must insist that you call me (y/n)." The boy gave you a perplexed look before responding, "Are you sure that's alright?" You couldn't help but want to laugh at the odd look he was gave you, but fought to maintain a schooled expression, before responding, "Im sure, but of course, you don't have to if it makes you uncomfortable."
Senjuro quickly shook his head side to side, "No, no, I don't mind at all (y/n)-San! I just didn't want you to feel uncomfortable!" He reassured, as his older brother couldn't help but chuckle at the both of you, "Well, now that we have that all sorted out, why don't we all head inside?"
"That's a good idea, brother! I'll make you and (y/n) tea. You both must be tired after all that walking." With that, the three of you made your way into the estate.
"Brother, would you mind showing (y/n) San to her room while I prepare the tea?"
"I don't mind at all, follow me (l/n)- San!" Kyojuro smiled before leading you down a long corridor before stopping in front of a shoji door that had beautiful, but slightly faded Crains painted on it.
"Here's your room! Mine is right across the hall, and Senjuros is the one next to mine to the left. If you have any problems, my door is always open, and I'm sure my little brother feels the same!" You could tell his words were sincere, but that confused you... You wanted to ask why he was being so kind to you? Why wasn't he angry at you? But the words were caught in your throat, and despite every fiber of you wanting to know why he wasn't angry already, you found a different question escaping from your lips.
"Thank you for the hospitality, Rengoku-san. Are there any rules I should know about?" He blinked; expression unreadable as he seemed to contemplate something... He didn't want you to feel trapped or as if you were walking on eggshells during your time there, but he also knew it would be best to warn you of his father's ill temper. He hoped it would help prevent you from ever being on the receiving end of one of his drunken spats, or at least postpone the inevitable.
"This isn't a rule per say, and I don't want you to be alarmed. This is just something I feel you should know; my father usually likes to nap from 12-3 pm, during that time it's best to try to stay quiet, he can get rather angry if woken up. If you end up accidently waking him up, it's best to avoid angering him any further, so I suggest just staying out of his way." concern shone in his eyes, you knew he was serious.
"Don't worry, my mother was the same way. Your father won't even know I'm here." Your understanment seemed to help calm and reassure the man.
"I'll place my bag inside. I'll join you both in a moment."
"Okay, I'll leave you to it!" Kyojuro responded as he made his way down the hall, leaving you in front of your room.
"Home sweet home." You couldn't help the dry chuckle that escaped you as you turned and slid open the door, reveling your chambers.  The room was rather spacious compared to what you were used to. The exterior wall had shoji paneling along with a sliding door which had what looked like to have once been a beautifully detailed wisteria tree painted on it, now faded due to the sands of time. As you stepped into the room and took a closer look at the mural. You couldn't help but feel saddened at the current state of the painting, but you didn't have long to dwell on the fact. You knew you could only leave the boys waiting for so long without being rude, so you sat your belongings down next to the rolled-up tatami mat in a corner, before exiting the room with one last glance at the mural.

With Kyojuro
Kyojuro tried to hold back a sigh as he made his way down the corridor, trying to fight off his worries for the future. . . He never pictured that marriage, a family, or even a long life was in the cards for him. He still wasn't sure if it was, or even if he had a right to any one of those things.
"Aniue, you look troubled?" Kyojuro blinked, realizing he made it to the end of the hall, "What's wrong, can I help?" Senjuros' caring words and concerned frown had a soft smile gracing Kyojuro's face.
"You have no need to worry, it's nothing I can't handle. Your big brother is strong and always protects you, right?" Senjuro nodded in agreement before Kyojuro ruffled his hair and made his way around him to sit at the dinner table, missing Senjuros quite voice, "But who will protect you, big brother?" The question went unanswered as the boy's waited a few minutes for you to join them.
"Sorry it took me so long." You apologize as you entered the living space not long after Kyojuro.
"It's no worries at all (y/n)-San! Please join us." Senjuro waved you over in a friendly manor, dawning a shy smile.
"The tea smells delicious, is it Sencha?" You asked curiously as you settled next to the young boy at the chabudai (floor table) taking in the aromic smell of the familiar tea.
"It is! Brother brought it back from his last mission."  you watched as Senjuro poured the colored liquid into each of your cups.
"Would you like sugar (y/n)-San?" the boy offered politely as he lifted the lid on the sugar cube holder, ready and awaiting your response.
"Yes, one or two, please and thank you."
Once he was done serving you, he placed 4 sugar cubes into Rengoku-sans cup unprompted, having you raise your eyebrows slightly.
"I like mine a little sweet." Kyojuro says with his usual boisterous tone before taking a large gulp and releasing a mighty "TASTY." That had Senjuro chuckling. The microscopic smile that graced your face went unnoticed as you observed the two brothers.
"I'd say that's more than a little sweet Rengoku-san." the truth behind your jest had Senjuro to laughing and his brother joining in after.
"I suppose you're right (l/n), but can you blame me?! It tastes so much better this way!"
You shook your head exasperated, "I'm inclined to disagree. All you taste is the sugar!"
"I think that's the point (y/n)." Senjuro said with a slight snark as he tried to stifle his giggling.
"My dearest little brother! Now you're ganging up on me, too!" Kyojuro let out a dramatic sigh and looked away feigning hurt, before he found himself laughing along with his brother.
You found yourself wished you could pause this moment, where the cruelties of the world couldn't touch you, where there was no anger, no sadness, where there was no pain... Only shared joy, between newfound friends, who in that moment forgot why they all were talking in the first place, but alas good things never seem to last long in this cruel world.
"What the hell is all that racket!"
