Hymns to Hecate
Orphic Hymn to Hecate
Hekate Enodia, Trivia, lovely dame, Of earthly, watery, and celestial frame, Sepulchral, in a saffron veil arrayed, Pleased with dark ghosts that wander through the shade; Daughter of Perses, solitary goddess, hail! The world’s key-bearer, never doomed to fail; In stags rejoicing, huntress, nightly seen, And drawn by bulls, unconquerable, monstrous queen; Leader, Nymphe, nurse, on mountains wandering, Hear the suppliants who with holy rites thy power revere, And to the herdsman with a favoring mind draw near.
Hecate’s Hymn to Herself
I come, a virgin of varied forms, wandering through the heavens, bull-faced, three-headed, ruthless, with golden arrows; chaste Phoebe bringing light to mortals, Eileithyia; bearing the three synthemata [sacred signs] of a triple nature.  In the Aether I appear in fiery forms and in the air I sit in a silver chariot, Earth reins in my black brood of puppies.
(From Porphyry’s lost commentary on the Chaldean Oracles, preserved by Eusebius of Caesaria in Praeparatio Evangelica. According to Porphyry, this hymn was composed by Hecate herself.)
Magical Invocation to Hecate
Approach, you of the netherworld, of earth, of heaven, Bombo! You by the wayside, at the crossroads, light-bearer, night-wanderer, Enemy of light, friend and companion of night, Rejoicing in the howl of dogs and in crimson gore, Lurking among the corpses and the tombs of lifeless dust, Lusting for blood, bringing terror to mortals, Grim one, Ogress [Mormo], Moon – you of many forms, May you come gracious to our sacrificial rites!
(Preserved in Refutation to All Heresies by Hippolytus)
Invocation to Hecate from PGM IV 2708-84
Come, giant Hecate, Dione’s guard, O Persia [daughter of Perses], Baubo Phroune, dart-shooter, Unconquered Lydian, the one untamed, Sired nobly, torch-bearing, guide, who bends down Proud necks, Kore, hear, you who’ve parted / gates Of steel unbreakable. O Artemis, Who, too, were once protectress, mighty one, Mistress, who burst forth from the earth, dog-leader, All-tamer, crossroad goddess, triple-headed, Bringer of light, august / virgin, I call you Fawn-slayer, crafty, O infernal one, And many-formed. Come, Hekate, goddess Of three ways, who with your fire-breathing phantoms Have been allotted dreaded roads and harsh / Enchantments, Hekate I call you
[…]
O Hekate of many names, O Virgin, Kore, Goddess, come, I ask, O guard and shelter of the threshing floor Persephone, O triple-headed goddess, Who walk on fire, cow-eyed BOUORPHORBE PANPHORBA PHORBARA AKITOPHI ERESHKIGAL / NEBOUTOSOUALETH Beside the doors, PYPYLEDEDEZO And gate-breaker; Come Hekate, of firey Counsel, I call you to my sacred chants.

Circe: Goddess of Sorcery Talon Abraxas
While not acknowledged as a goddess by all, Circe is always portrayed as an immensely-powerful witch. It’s not known for certain that she is the daughter of Hecate, but she was often said to be a priestess of the goddess of witchcraft.
Hailed as the first spellcaster and the very spirit of magic, Circe’s magical abilities are innumerable. While her power to transform humans is by far the most famed, she is also skilled in the ways of plant magic, or pharmakeia. She uses this blend of alchemy and herbalism to craft potions, poisons, and the like.

Traditional Orphic Hymns: Mythology
Have you ever heard of an Orphic Hymn? If you haven't, here is a little background...
An Orphic Hymn is a type of devotional poetry that was used in the religious practices of ancient Greece, particularly in the mystery cults associated with the mythical poet and prophet Orpheus. These hymns were believed to have been composed by Orpheus himself, although the actual authorship is unknown and they were likely written by various poets over time.
Orphic Hymns are characterized by their invocations to specific deities, as well as their use of mystical language and symbolism. Each hymn is dedicated to a particular god, goddess, or abstract concept, and they often include epithets, attributes, and mythological references associated with the subject of the hymn.
In ancient Greek religion, Orphic Hymns were used as part of ritual practices, such as:
Invocation: The hymns were recited or sung to call upon the presence of a deity and to request their blessings, guidance, or protection.
Worship: They were used as a means of honoring and praising the gods, expressing devotion, and strengthening the connection between the worshippers and the divine.
Initiation: In mystery cults, such as the Orphic or Eleusinian Mysteries, the hymns may have been used as part of the initiation process, helping to guide initiates through the symbolic journey and impart sacred knowledge.
Contemplation: The rich symbolism and enigmatic language of the hymns could serve as a tool for spiritual contemplation, allowing practitioners to delve deeper into the mysteries of the divine and the nature of the universe.
In modern times, Orphic Hymns continue to be studied by scholars of ancient religion and literature. They are also used by some contemporary spiritual practitioners, particularly those involved in Hellenic polytheism or other forms of paganism, as a means of connecting with the Greek gods and goddesses and as a tool for personal spiritual growth and ritual practice.
How is it used?...
Here is a traditional Orphic Hymn to Hecate, translated from the ancient Greek text:
"Hecate, bearer of light, who holds the keys, Goddess of the crossroads, revered and mighty, In the sky, on earth, and in the sea, You dwell in the souls of the dead. Chthonic and Celestial, you are the beginning and the end, Alone you wield the scepter of command. You favor the brave in battle, And in the contests, you grant the prize. You nurture the young, you give abundance in good measure, And when life ends, to you we go. Hail, Goddess, and attend your supplicants with favor, With joyful heart and gracious to our prayers."
This hymn is used to invoke and honor Hecate, the Greek goddess of magic, witchcraft, ghosts, and crossroads. The hymn highlights her various roles and attributes:
It addresses Hecate as a "bearer of light," referring to her association with torches and illumination, both literal and metaphorical.
The hymn emphasizes Hecate's liminality, as she presides over crossroads and thresholds, and is connected to the realms of the living and the dead.
It acknowledges her power and influence in all spheres - the sky, earth, and sea - and her role as a psychopomp, guiding souls in the afterlife.
The hymn also recognizes Hecate as a goddess of abundance, bravery, and nurturing, reflecting her complex and multifaceted nature.
In ritual practice, this hymn would be recited as a means of calling upon Hecate's presence, seeking her blessings, and honoring her power. It might be used in magical workings, especially those related to transition, transformation, or communication with the dead. The hymn could also be recited as part of a devotional practice, as a way of expressing reverence for Hecate and strengthening the practitioner's connection to her energy and mysteries.
Other Orphic Hymn God's & Goddesses you can invoke:
Here are 38 traditional Orphic Hymns, each dedicated to a different Greek deity or concept:
To Hecate
To Prothyraia
To Night
To Heaven
To Aether
To Protogonos
To the Stars
To the Sun
To the Moon

To Pan
To Hercules

To the Curetes
To Athena
To Victory
To Asclepius
To Health
To the Seasons
To the Fates
To the Graces
To Themis
To Nemesis

To Law
To Mars
To Vulcan
To Esculapius
To Hygeia
To the Furies
To the Fates
To the Graces
To Prosperine
To Bacchus
To Mercury
To the Muses
To Memory
Please note that these are the titles of the Orphic Hymns, and each hymn has its own unique text in ancient Greek. The exact content and length of each hymn vary, with some being more extensive than others. These hymns were used in ancient Greek ritual worship and are attributed to the legendary poet Orpheus, though their actual authorship is unknown.

@thealmightyemprex @professorlehnsherr-almashy @amalthea9 @princesssarisa
The Voodoo Macbeth is a common nickname for the Federal Theatre Project's 1936 New York production of William Shakespeare's Macbeth. Orson Welles adapted and directed the production, moved the play's setting from Scotland to a fictional Caribbean island, recruited an entirely Black cast, and earned the nickname for his production from the Haitian vodou that fulfilled the role of Scottish witchcraft. A box office sensation, the production is regarded as a landmark theatrical event for several reasons: its innovative interpretation of the play, its success in promoting African-American theatre, and its role in securing the reputation of its 20-year-old director.
Shakespeare's play is about the downfall of a usurper in medieval Scotland, who is encouraged in his actions by three witches. The central idea behind Welles's production was to perform the text straight, but to use costumes and sets that alluded to Haiti in the 19th century, specifically during the reign of the slave-turned-emperor Henri Christophe. Although the main reason for this choice was that it was an appropriate setting for an all-black cast, Welles felt that it also enhanced the play's realism: he thought the production's popularity was partly due to the fact that the idea of voodoo was more credible to a contemporary audience than was medieval witchcraft.
In many productions, the character of Hecate, the Queen of the Witches, is often cut. Instead, Welles turned the character into a pivotal figure. Performed by Eric Burroughs as a huge man with a bullwhip,  Hecate presides over events as a ringmaster of magicians, and often closes scenes. Hecate ends the play with the line, "The charm's wound up", repeated from Act 1. Welles's 1948 film version of Macbeth, in which Hecate does not appear, also ends with this line.
The production used a single, unchanging set of a castle in a jungle. The backdrops featured stylized palm trees and skeleton imagery.
It is not certain whether the production removed references to Scotland from the text. Welles's promptbook keeps them intact, but in the surviving film record of the production's climax, the line "Hail, King of Scotland" is truncated to "Hail, King".

Persephone Rewrite
Tumblr media
Her personality
Kore is enthusiastic, a go getter, smart, and flirty. She's known to be very kind and inquisitive but also has a very dark side to her.
Tumblr media
Her fashion
She dresses mostly modern with a splash of traditional, she favors chokers and the colors black and gold. Her hair is worn typically short as she does a lot of garden work, but it can grow out either at will or when she's nervous, she only wears her hair long when she feels like it.
Tumblr media
Her background
She's the daughter of Demeter, Demeter formed her out of flowers, meaning she has no father. Her and her mother have a stellar relationship with, of course, the normal hang ups of a mother daughter relationship. She hails from the country but has always been caught up with the world via the Internet. She's friends with Hecate, Hermes, Artemis, and of course, the nymphs that live close to her.
Tumblr media
Design notes
I didn't intend on her being black coded, but I went with it anyway as I feel there needs to be better black/brown representation in LO (and that's just according to my pasty white ass). I wanted her to be more sexy and flirty in a more "I'm a mature and sensible woman" sort of way instead of born sexy yesterday. Yes, she's still sort of naive, given she grew up in the country and is adjusting to city life, but she isn't a dumb little damsel. I went with some of her holy colors for her color scheme.
Tumblr media
What else should you know?
She uses she/her and enjoys sparkling grape juice. She's vegan, enjoys beer, and likes seaweed snacks. She's also pierced to hell and back, but she leaves her jewelry out sometimes because she blows through aesthetics.
Thanks for reading.

The named characters in Hypnocreux
Jyoti Pomare - twisted from Gunpowder from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. She is a third-year in Hypnocreux. A pyromaniac who happens to be a talented equestrian, she's an anomaly even among the spooky Hypnocreux students. She's essentially the female third-year version of Floyd Leech. Funnily enough, despite the similarities, they're more likely to kill each other at first sight.
Rosanna Shroud - twisted from Hecate from Hercules: The Animated Series. She is a first-year in Hypnocreux. A rather mysterious girl hailing from the Shroud family, her very existence baffles Idia's classmates as he's never told them about a sister. Nonetheless, she manages to forge sincere friendships with Malleus, among others. She likes to hatch and raise butterflies.
Tirzah Ladouceur - twisted from Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas. She is a first-year in Hypnocreux. Raised by ghosts since she was a baby, Tirzah has a rather warped moral compass. Despite her general spooky appearance and nature, she's actually quite harmless.
