Orphic Hymn to Hekate
This is the Orphic Hymn to Hekate that I filmed about a year ago or so. I put this melody together based somewhat loosely on a syrto type of rhythm--also a form of ayoub. When I am reconstructing or adapting ancient poetry into music for trancework, I keep the focus on how functional it will be to facilitate trancework. Music for this needs to be hypnotic and it needs to have features that pull people under. So, there are keywords that I will emphasize that are hidden in the text that are designed to do that. These are the legomena--things recited--of really any ecstatic tradition but most especially the Pan-Hellenic family of ecstatic music. Hekate is the opener and guide into the spiritworld. This should start as a chain dance (kolo, horo, choro, bar, halay, etc) done with a group but you can just use the foot pattern to move solo with it. I use a modified syrto because it is very simple and fits the pattern that I hear when I scan this one. It should be something accessible and uncomplicated and I feel that the syrto accomplishes this pretty well. As the dance progresses, individuals may break off from the chain and dance on their own if there is enough space for it.
When performing this for trancework, I repeat the whole song at least three times. My personal standard is to go very slowly (low & slow) for that first time through. The second time through, I will kick the tempo up a bit. The third time is relatively fast, loud, and vocally projected with great strength. If I am doing more than 3 repetitions, the general idea is to control the pace and power of the rhythm as well as vocal inflection to bring it to a crescendo at the end. So, the end is always going to be the hardest hitting. The reason for this is to encourage PTFO (pass the eff out). Post crescendo, I will slow the rhythm down dramatically--which is what I did in this video (sans crescendo). The purpose of this is to keep anyone who has been trancing from getting back up and doing it again. I would be stuck in a ritual loop all night if I did otherwise and we would never get past this song.
I am torn on what the proper vocal inflection should be for this. Some days I am convinced that it should be done in the high voice, most days I defer to the low voice. For traditional ecstatic music, every singer should be able to switch between either vocal style depending on the needs of the piece. (I will have to make a separate post on how to determine what to use and when.) So, for this one particularly, I would just advise you listen to your heart and do as you feel appropriate.

I keep coming back to these lines in the Orphic Hymn for Adonis, the imagery is so powerful and steeped in bittersweetness. Adonis, destined to love and be loved by the most treasured of goddesses, a consort to Love Herself (beloved Aphroditê) and Youthful Kore (treasured Persephone); but the flame that burns brightest cannot always last.
Mortal Adonis is inside all of us, for no matter how deep our love for our gods, we will never be able to stay by their side until the end of times. But I do find comfort somewhere in there, for think of how beloved Adonis was, and still is. Our corporeal form may wither and turn to dust, but the ethereal spirit will always be remembered by someone, somewhere... at least, it is comforting to imagine so ❤️
(perhaps this is my descent into Orphism - I suppose only time will tell)

Ophiel's Mercury Retrograde Mitigation Ritual

Some people might think Mercury retrograde is unavoidable while other thinks it is insignificant. Everyone have their own opinion about Mercury retrograde. I don't know how people approach it or what they do with it but here's my two cents. Try and see what work with you. I personally find miscommunication and misinterpretation is rampant during this time, electrical and electronic stuff tend to go haywire..I don't like that in my IT-related job. All of this is anecdotal but maybe you feel it differently. This spell works with Olympic spirit Ophiel of Mercury, I asked for permission to share the spell and got general approval. The instruction specifically is to draw a triangle, within it the Seal of Ophiel on a mirror, followed by lighting a candle or shinning a desk lamp at it. How does it work? I don't know! but it does! I did as the instruction but personally added a few parts by myself, including incense mix of sweet smelling herbs, an alcoholic offering, alongside the Orphic Hymn to Hermes and Hermes Chthonios, concluded by a prayer to mitigate the effect of mercury retrograde from my life and my loved ones. I did it on 19th of April 2023 just before the mercury retrograde on April 21 until May 14. Do I know how it would be without doing this ritual? I don't know really, for me it is better be safe than sorry! From my own experience I found out that when I don't do anything to mitigate the mercury retrograde's effect, I find out miscommunication between me and my loved ones, colleague at work, and so on.
