To Ward a Natural Space
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a Ward that defends a natural area against those who would disrespect the land. It was taught to me by the Glaoming Folk, and I have since been given permission to share the process in hopes that others might use it to protect their own beloved ecological sites. It is worth noting that this ward only seems to have a range of about 20 to 40 feet, which I realize isn't necessarily ideal, but when strategically placed, multiple wards can be used to create a 'warding net' across an area.
To make this Ward, a switch must be harvested from a propitiated Crabapple tree, which is then split in half to create a pair of sticks measuring approximately the same length. Thereafter, a long and thin runner of blackberry bramble is collected and harvested—ideally from a place with fae activity—and is stripped of leaves. A God's Eye is then woven using the Crabapple sticks and the Blackberry brambles, working one's intent into every turn of the Weaving, before a tuft of Hare's fur is ensnared within the center of the ward. All of this must be done bare-handed, as every prick and drop of blood serves to strengthen the will of the Ward and appease the Spirit of the Blackberry, which lends its power to this magic.
The resultant device can then either be hung with twine, or simply placed in a fitting spot. It has shown itself to be quite helpful in discouraging those who would litter or mar a natural space from doing so. While littering and tree carving hasn't gone away entirely since beginning to use these, it has most certainly dropped significantly—and only in the places where they are employed.

Note
Also random but honestly the Melina is the Gloam eyed Queen theory makes no sense to me… especially when there’s so many parallels to Ranni RIGHT THERE. I’d honestly bet on that she’s the part of Ranni’s soul that the two fingers had their grip on.
Makes no sense to me either and I've made my points why plenty of times so I won't repeat them.
But I don't think Ranni is the GEQ either. It doesn't feel possible, to me. Timeline-wise, I believe the GEQ did her thing around the start or midpoint of Marika's rule and I'm not sure if even Rennala was born at that point. Also if Ranni was the GEQ, she would 100% be using those extra Godskins as canon folder instead of, for example, hiding in a coffin and waiting for the Tarnished to maybe show up. And why use ice sorceries if she has Black Flame on her disposal? That would be way more useful against the gods she's clashing with.
~
Tangent that I couldn't resist cause I've been thinking about this since the DLC trailer dropped:
There's this trend I really dislike in the ER fandom, of taking perfectly realised characters, erasing all their personality and adding the GEQ in its place. With Meli, there also used to be talk that she's actually Ranni, back when the fandom was a couple months old. Now there are even folks that are saying she's Messmer. Like, give her a bloody break. I'm honestly done with actively engaging in lore for that reason (asks or tagging me in posts are always welcome, I just don't care to make my own anymore).
~
All things considered, I think that the GEQ is just herself. She doesn't need to occupy another character's space, or to disturb their already established character(s). There's also this thing at the room where you find her sword (that is guarded by a Blackflame Monk and a Godskin Apostate):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm willing to bet that the GEQ was a beastwoman, and this is a broken down statue of hers. It would also fit timeline-wise, I think. But that's the extent of my thoughts on her, I don't find her interesting.
Anyway, this is now 1/3 answer and 2/3 tangents... Sorry for derailing the answer, anon. :/

A lesson in Trees and Gloaming Etiquette
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I fucked up. Like I found a solution to the problem but I done fucked up because I got too excited. You see, I hiked out to a burd sanctuary on my last off day in Chicago and came across a beautiful Hawthorn tree, surrounded by Elder and Bittersweet Nightshade with a nest in it. It's easily one of the most obvious and clear signs of a tree of the fairfolk. And of course, I work closely with the Lordly Hawthorn as it is my patron tree.
So what was my mistake? I broke a branch of green wood, attempting to harvest thorns. I got greedy. I had absolutely asked permission, but rather than waiting for guidance on where to start I immediately went for a low lying branch of thorns and green haws and took the leaves ans thorns from there, breaking part of the branch. Only to look down and see the wind blown branch of thorns freely given to me and realized my horrible etiquette.
According to Schulke's Viridium (an excellent book on the way of cain if I might add), fae-owned Hawthorn trees should be revered and only the wind blown and already fallen boughs of the tree should be taken. I was deeply embarrassed by my faux pa. Immediately after taking the thorns, I made an offering of part of my water rations from the hike and blood with my deepest apologies. But, it still wasn't enough as the omen of the dead Cedar Wax Wing on my way back clearly drove me to pull some cards when I got home.
Tumblr media
The cards confirm my suspicions, that blood and water were not enough. I had to return part of my harvest, specifically the greenery and thorns from the branch I broke. But what interested me was the fact that that according to the cards, I had to bury the thorns and be creative with it. After sitting with the cards I realized I still had some Hawthorn dyed paper with me, and wrote out a petition of apology to the arboreal spirit, bundling the thorns and leaves with an offering of cantrip powder alongside. I confirmed this was the right move with my cards and then realized that as part of my penance, I could write about the experience as well.
So, let this be a lesson. Don't just ask permission from a plant, but wait for a positive response. Don't go breaking branches off sacred trees. And if you are going to violete some etiquette of the Good Neighbors, be prepared to make some heavy sacrifices with that apology.

MTMTE/LL script project.
Tumblr media
I am reposting an updated person of this post so I can maintag it for visibility!
tl;dr: I am attempting to digitize the MTMTE/LL scripts that exist for archival purposes to prevent any of them becoming lost media in the future. And I am looking for help in this!
The long version:
I am trying to get scans or clear, readable photographs of all the MTMTE/LL scripts that exist for the sake of digitizing them and making sure they don’t wind up lost media. (Needless to say, me currently trying to get ahold of fandom stuff from 20-30 years ago and constantly running into brick walls because nobody has scanned their copies of things got me thinking about this, haha.)
These scripts are, in a lot of cases, literally just printer paper stapled together and sold at cons to a very few people. I would hate to see these disappear in a decade or two because we all wound up forgetting where we left them, or stuck them in the attic and damp got them, or whatever.
Roberts has been selling nothing but spares/leftovers of these for a while now, including at this year's TFN, where he had very few left and none of them were new prints as far as I could tell. (Rusty staples!) In addition, he's said he does not expect to be doing more cons for some time. The one time he sold them online in 2020 or so, it was explicitly just old stock. So at this point, getting my hands on more for this project means either getting folks to kindly contribute scans or sell me their copies on.
(Sidenote: at the moment I'm not 100% sure if JRo has finished up selling these forever, though it seems likely for the forseeable given the above. Even so, I’m a little leery of making this stuff super public until such a time as he confirms he's got no future plans, because I hate to eat into a potential way for creators to make some well earned money off their own work if it turns out he’s gonna sell more later. This project is to make sure an archive exists as futureproofing, but I don't currently plan to immediately make this a massive public repository. But obviously, anyone kind enough to contribute can have access to the drive.)
Below the cut is a list of a) what I currently have, b) what I expect to have soon and c) what I know exists and do not have. If you have anything I don't, and would be willing to scan or photograph it to contribute, please let me know. Alternatively, if anyone has scripts I don’t already own which rather than scan they’re interested in selling on, hit me up. I am not made of money, but I’m willing to pay a fair price to get my hands on them if needed. Just be aware I’m UK based.
Unscanned, for me to do: Lost Light #6, This Machine Kills Fascists (standard)
Unscanned, being scanned by others: Chaos Theory
Scanned or photographed: More Than Meets The Eye #6, Interiors (annotated) More Than Meets The Eye #9, Shadowplay Part One: Post Hoc More Than Meets The Eye #12, Before and After (standard) More Than Meets The Eye #16, The Gloaming (standard) More Than Meets The Eye #22, Little Victories (annotated) More Than Meets The Eye #28, World Shut Your Mouth: Towards Peace (annotated) More Than Meets The Eye #31, Twenty Plus One (standard) More Than Meets The Eye #35, The Custom Made Now (standard) More Than Meets The Eye #38, Elegant Chaos: Predestination, an Expert's Guide (annotated) More Than Meets The Eye #39, The Permanent Revolution (annotated) More than Meets The Eye #40, Our Steps Will Always Rhyme (standard and annotated) More Than Meets The Eye #47, The Lopsided Triangle (standard) Lost Light #6, This Machine Kills Fascists (annotated) More Than Meets The Eye #50, How Bright Their Frail Deeds (annotated) Lost Light #13, Sardines (annotated) Lost Light #25, How To Say Goodbye And Mean It: Part 2 (annotated) The Transformers Holiday Special, Silent Light/MTMTE #50 backup script (annotated)
Ones I am looking for and know exist: More Than Meets The Eye #4 (labelled #3), Life After The Big Bang (standard) More Than Meets The Eye #5, How Ratchet Got His Hands Back More Than Meets The Eye #14, Remembrance Day More Than Meets The Eye #21, Remain in Light: This Calamitous Life More Than Meets The Eye #35, The Custom Made Now (annotated) More Than Meets The Eye #43, The One Where They Go To Earth (annotated) More Than Meets The Eye #55, The Dying of the Light: Do Not Go Gentle
(Note: the scripts often have preliminary titles that differ from those above that were used for final issues. Also, for earlier issues, sometimes numbering is off by one, because projected issue counts shifted. The above is mostly guesses based on numbers JRo mentioned for scripts on Twitter and final issue names.)
You can contact me either here or on Twitter. And if you could let anyone know who you think could help and signal boost, I would appreciate it.
Thank you!

There Was Once A Time
Tumblr media
The night was long and the day so brief,
The sun barely broke the horizon,
And the moon at night glowed so bright,
Every step was on snow or leaf
The beasts of the field nestled close to earth,
Days had grown shorter and life’s ardor so still,
The fields cold and barren, the wind through trees howled,
We as family drew close to small heat from the hearth
Banshees wailed and faeries hid in the limbs of trees,
The magic ones fled to their caves underground,
The folk who held the Yule shivered but looked to new days,
Days that were longer and the sun we would see
All seemed dreary, yet our hearts beat wildly, our eyes aglow,
Mother Earth was being born anew as she woke from slumber,
Through the cold and the gloom we knew what was to come,
Solstice a time we dare not forget, life will come from under the snow
So light we the bonfires beneath mighty oaks,
And dance we round the fire filled with mead and ale,
Dress the trees in lights and let the children play,
Sing and dream and chant of magic things cried the folk
The air smelled of bread and stews of ale freshly brewed,
Ciders and fruits and meat from the bone,
Bayberry, cinnamon, wine mulled from o’er the fire,
The Rowan tree like standing people their enchantment renewed
From the gloaming to the dawn we all feel the earth breathe,
Felt by the children, the old, the infirm, the trees, the sky,
It is Yule time and this day has it been since before the before,
Fire shares its warmth, look to the moon, a new season to us bequeathed

THEME: Fae & Fen
This week’s recommendations revolve around faeries, either as benign outsiders that are misunderstood, or as malevolent or strange entities that can be horrific threats.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Strays, by kumada1.
Strays is a 246 page tabletop rpg about changelings---the children of two fae courts---caught in between the pull of the mortal and fae worlds.
Choose between eight Courts, take special powers, befriend buildings, wander between worlds, and try to get by in a setting where everyone wants you to grow up and pick a side.
There are rules for physical, social, and magical combat. Detailed writeups of the eight Realms of faerie. An overhaul of the regular PbtA rules. GMing advice. A sample scenario. Rules for burning yourself out and becoming an NPC. A shared hangout spot for the party. And more.
This game combines the magic of faerie with the paranoia of a setting where everyone is keeping secrets - even your parents. Your characters have only recently discovered their fae origins, and now that they have magic, all of the Fae Courts - and a mundane Taskforce - want them. This game is PbtA so much of the fiction will follow from what the characters are interested in - what’s on the line if they start pursuing their magic? Will their mortal families pay a price for being unsuspecting hosts? Play to find out.
The Gloaming Diaries, by Timor Jack Press.
The Gloaming Diaries is a tabletop roleplaying game of modern fairy tales in small towns. As a player, you take on the role of the gloamspun, half-human, half-fae beings created when a fairy fleeing eternal war encounters a human seeking change within the Wood. Needing one another, they weave their souls together, becoming one.  Among your fellow gloamspun what unfolds next is a new story. For you have two pasts, but only one future.
Play as one of 10 Paths, each of which describes the human you were and the path that led you to that fateful twilight meeting, and one of 10 Tales, each of which describes the fae you were and the story your magical life told. Were you an Elder entering the woods to die who instead found a new life with a Tale of Mischief? Were you a Lover who slipped into the woods for a tryst and found yourself drawn to join souls with a Tale of Sorrow?
What stories will you tell in your small town at the edge of the woods? For although everyone's a little strange in remote parts, few are as strange as you.
The Gloaming Diaries uses either a d20 or a pack of tarot cards to move the story forward. This game has a Third Party License that outlines the rules for creating your own content for The Gloaming Diaries, and the creator has a number of their own supplements for the game, encompassing everything from violence, death, and dreams.
Changelings: The Magic & The Fury, by Kolek Niewiary.
This is a roleplaying game about changelings i.e. fae creatures (the elves, the faerie, the fair folk) inhabiting human bodies. While in the mortal realm they must control their conflicting nature while fighting for the cause that called them onto Earth.
The players take the role of the changelings. The fair folk, the fae left this world as the civilization developed and banality ruled. Now, recalled by human dreams of a better world, they return as changelings. Infuriated with the world that once rejected them, with the people who killed the magic and replaced it with Excel spreadsheets. The Faerie, wearing a human body, finds a cause to fight for. They come to help the weak and the excluded.
Veterans of Honey Heist or Lasers & Feelings may resonate a little bit with the rules of Changelings, but it draws most of its mechanical inspiration from Wights, by Steffie de Vaan. Your characters, as changelings called forth by mortals to meet injustices with righteous anger, will teeter between the banality of the human world and the Dreams of Faerie. These two stats are called Approaches, and they can increase and decrease depending on character actions. If you’re enthusiastic about justice and faerie magics, this might be the game for you!
Adiotopia, by Minakie.
Adiotopia is a micro TTRPG (for 3+ players) about collaboratively telling the stories of a group of young Protectors in training, who travel between their world (Sanubari) and Fäerie with their mentor in order to help both Saubi and Fae deal with their everyday problems, enforcing the law, mitigating conflicts, protecting people, studying the indigenous fauna and flora and potentially solving mysteries, while always being on the lookout for the dangerous darklings and the unpredictable undead. If you're lucky, you might befriend the dragons or the elves, or even learn a magic trick or two along the way.
The premise of the game is that the world is full of creatures and mysteries worth investigating and that, while some of them might have a simple and rather ordinary explanation, others might not be what they seem at first, and be somehow connected with the multitude of mystical creatures that inhabit the land.
Adiotopia is a great pick-up game that borrows some ideas of magical settings for teenagers and combines it the the allure of Faerie. Faerie is a dangerous and evocative place, with endless possibilities in regards to what the party will find there. Sanubari is home, and comfortable, a place you can retreat to when Faerie becomes too weird or wild. If you like coming-of-age fiction about young people stepping into a magical world and having adventures, this is a great option worth checking out.
Faewater, by A Smouldering Lighthouse.
In the darkest woods, you may find the fae. Old and strange, their power and pleasure can be intoxicating. In the darkest waters, you may find the same.
A group of mortals have gathered to seek the deep fae. Tonight is your final act after months of secret meetings. You must not fail now.
Faewater is a one-page dark fantasy game about underwater fairies and the mortals they prey on. This tabletop role-playing game is designed to be played in a single two to three hour session.
This is a one-page game that explores the horrific side of Faerie - the power and terror of dealing with the unknown. You are mortals diving underwater to find a mystery that proves to be more deadly than you expected, and throughout the game, your character will find themselves replaced by fae creatures. Don’t hold on too carefully to your PC - you’re going to lose them at some point, either to home or to the deep.
Hedge, by A Couple of Drakes.
The Fey were here before we were. They have not forgotten.
Their forms are multitude. Their powers are incalculable. Their mastery of the world, the Wyld, that they fashioned for themselves when nature rebelled against them, is absolute. They press against the edges of our world, watching. Waiting. They pick at the seams and wait for the barrier between us and them to unravel. They are coming. All that stands between them and us is the Hedge. The barrier of Nature's magic which keeps them at bay is weakening. In her agony, the Hedge calls forth her champions.
"My savior, my darling, my cure. Stop at nothing."
Once, you were merely human. Once, the Fey would have looked at you only as a thing to be bent or broken. Or eaten. Now the Hedge has chosen you to stand, to fight, and to shine. Harness the powers of nature, upgradeable weapons, and stolen Fey magic, to fight against hordes of scary faeries.
Hold tight to your humanity as you take the fight into the depths of the Wyld, facing down the Court of Air and Darkness in the heart of their power with six iconic Wardens, 102 awe-inspiring powers, 65 beefy pages of rules and vague-but-evocative lore, and the robust, power-fantasy fueling core mechanics of LUMEN. Hold the line against terrifying foes, collect powerful Fey Grafts, and save what's left of the world from a dark fairytale apocalypse.
LUMEN games excel at providing you with moldable character sheets and satisfying combat, and Hedge is no exception. The Fae are decidedly antagonistic here, and your characters are using every weapon in their arsenal to hold back the horde of fae creatures threatening your existence. There are a number of supplements, such as Horde and Hearth, for players who want to see the full extent of what this game can offer. If you want heroism, combat, and power-fantasy, this is the game for you.

WIP Title Ask Game
Tagged by @landwriter, thank you Gloam!! <3
RULES: make a new post with the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
My fics are all Gdoc files which I try to give a proper title as soon as possible so I can keep better track of them but it makes it harder to distinguish between finished and wip files, which is why their titles usually include that WIP status😅
So I've got following WIP files:
A Friendly Heart ch6 Against all odds Good intentions (WIP orcHob fantasy AU) Rekindle My Heart (WIP fire elemental Hob) Kaleidoscope (emerald star 3), including: (untitled 3rd part - A hundred years) Dreamling drabbles/ideas Unsustainable (Dreamling Hannibal AU) Dreamling - The Nightingale HellMuse meet-ugly
and one that's finished but I share the file title because it's hilarious: Frankendreamling
That's all, folks, not much has changed since the last time I answered this 😅 I'd be delighted to talk about these or share some bits and pieces! :3 Tagging @tj-dragonblade, @karalynlovescake and @dsudis, if you want!

Gloaming Nonbinary
An addition to the skyset pride series, my take on the nonbinary flag and an alternative to use rather than a replacement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nonbinary individuals, those who identify with the label or as under the umbrella, may identify as entirely outside the binary genders disconnected from masc or fem and/or might id with both masc and fem to some degree. some may or may not id as trans as well.
nb folk, including dysphoric and non-dysphoric, intersex and all sorts of others who id as nb, have a very diverse experience with gender especially both within and outside of the binary. all are valid.
Tumblr media
Twilight Anonbinary
An addition to the skyset pride series, my take on the Anonbinary flag and an alternative to use rather than a replacement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
people who identify as anonbinary or under the anonbinary umbrella may also identify under nonbinary or agender but dont have to. anonbinary people feel their gender and experience with such is both outside of the binary and the nonbinary genders, being something else entirely. most dont identify as agender or genderless because they do feel a gender is there, its just beyond that of the descriptors for binary and nonbinary genders. some still feel connected to masc, fem, neutral and/or androgynous alignments in some way.
this can include trans, intersex, dysphoric and non-dysphoric folk. no mater the experience and additional identifiers/labels, anonbinarys are valid.
Tumblr media
Umbra Agender
An addition to the skyset pride series, my take on the agender flag and an alternative to use rather than a replacement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Agender is defined as feeling as though your gender is neither binary nor outside the binary and often times doesnt even exist. some people who id as agender feel genderless and/or feels some partial connection to having a gender and/or connected to other genders, binary or not, to some extent.
not every agender person is entirely with a lack of gender, they have a spectrum and range of feel for their gender, some even id as cassgender or cassflux. this includes trans, intersex, dysphoric and non-dysphoric folk. all are valid.

thank you for the tag @anatomicalmartyr! 💕
Favourite colour: slate blue and all its accompanying shades
Last song: allistrum's march - the gloaming. it's folk music and sea ballad autumn, after all
Last Movie: daguerrotype. not quite sure how I feel about this one— the concept of achieving a shadow of immortality via photography was quite interesting, but the cinematography and acting were a bit lackluster in parts
Currently watching: nothing, but I'm considering a queen's gambit rewatch. It's a show I associate with late autumn, and anyway, I miss beth
Other stuff I watched this year: the banshees of inisherin, compartment no. 6 (highly recommend these two), train driver's diary, cure, v for vendetta, the prestige, the queen of spades
Shows I dropped this year: all of them 🫣 i'm afraid i'm very fickle when attempting to complete any show these days, good writing or no. (also yes, I do still need to get to the terror. soon)
Currently reading: halfway through moby dick, though I still need another book to accompany it. the current contenders are jonathan strange & mr. norrell and ancillary justice, per trusted recommendations.
Currently listening to: alternating between the gloaming's discography and a moby dick playlist. it's here in case anyone is curious. it has whale songs!
Currently working on: nothing at the moment. I should probably get back to the sweater I started a few months ago though
Current Obsession/s: nautical gothic thoughts encore
if you're seeing this, and you are so inclined, consider yourself tagged 🪄

hello,
this may sound like a silly question, but is it possible for someone who is not Irish, scottish, or British to be contacted by the Fae?
thank you!
Hello there.
This isn't a silly question, but it's one I will have to expound on a bit, as opposed to just giving a yes or no answer. I'll also preface this by saying that my personal beliefs will likely be contentious to some, and I encourage readers to take what they find useful and leave the rest if it conflicts with their own paradigm. Most of this comes from a mixture of personal gnosis and theory, and I am not attempting to assert authority on the subject or claim academic accuracy, so please keep that in mind.
To put it very simply, I believe that the Fae are present in every region of the world, and I have highly syncretic beliefs about the nature of the Fae and other spirits in general. For me, the folkloric specifics come down to cultural lenses and the ways that long-term worship and perception shape the expectations and manifestations of the Gloaming Folk. So, no, I don't think one has to be Gaelic or Brythonic in order to cultivate a relationship with the Fae.
For instance, when looking at the Faerie Faith, many people think primarily—if not only—of the insular Celts. The Fair Folk of the English; the Aos Sidhe of the Irish; the Daoine Sìth of the Scottish; the Sheeaghan of the Manx; the Twlwyth Teg of the Welsh; the Spyrysyon of the Cornish; and the Korrigan of the Breton. But in the larger context of Germanic and Scandinavian folklore, there is copious evidence of entities that are undeniably similar to the Fae as they are understood in the Insular Celtic Isles. In fact, the Germanic word Elf is so closely aligned with the term Faery that many people don't even realize or think about the fact that they derive from different cultures. That being said, the Germanic/Scandinavian "lens" of Faerie Lore is probably the other best known by the wider public.
Likewise, there are multiple beings that show up in Slavic mythology and folklore—such as the Vila, the Rusalke, or the Vodyanoy—which are pretty readily accepted as Faeries. I don't know of an overarching term that would necessarily be equivalent, but the folkloric link is still there.
Now, moving into a more controversial aspect of my beliefs, I also happen to think of Angels, Demons, and Djinn in terms of Gloaming Spirits. While I readily admit that millenia of regionally specific belief and veneration form unique "identies" that Spirits of a given culture may align more closely with, I believe that they are all part of one larger "family" of beings who have been interacting with humanity for many thousands of years. I realize that this will likely be considered an egregious oversimplication for some, or possibly even an erasure of the individuality these cultures possess; but for me, the things that make a tradition sacred and unique are not invalidated or snuffed out by by the fact that other cultures may find recognition in them. So, while I do think beings like Angels, Demons, and Djinn are inexorably interrelated, I also fully accept that they are unique and culturally specific. And frankly, I find it hard to believe that others who have engaged in intensive personal gnosis haven't come across similar threads of paradoxical interconnection.
Beyond these, though, I've also pinpointed other entities over the years that I think represent reasonable approximations of the Fae. These include things like:
The Peris of Persian Mythology (Beautiful aerial spirits sometimes known to work with humans called Peri-Kahn, who gained skills and abilities from the relationship. They are generally described as humanoid figures with beautiful wings, who are known for their michevious behavior, though at least one work references them as divine beings denied entry into paradise until such a times as they have atoned—a folkloric motif some will recognize in connection to certain folk-beliefs regarding the Angels and the Fae.)
The Yakshas of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism (Spirits of nature often connected with water, fertility, plants, treasures, and the wilderness. While some are considered benign or benevolent, others are considered more mischevious or sinister, though most are considered capricious. Sometimes associated with ecological forces, and at other times, with the spirits of the dead. )
The Yōkai of Shintō (A diverse array of spirits—often explicitly equivacated with fairies, demons, and/or sprites—known to interact with humans in both benevolent and malevolent capacities. While many of these spirits are quite singular in their uniqueness, others are more recognizable within a broader archetypal folkloric context—such as the Zashiki-warashi, which are described as diminutive domestic sprites known for both their ability to bestow good fortune, and their tendency to perform mischevious pranks.)
The Korpokkur of Ainu Mythology (A race of little folk, associated with the Butterbur plant, who were said to leave gifts under cover of night—as they did not like being seen. They were believed to be the original inhabitants of Japan before the Ainu—which also echoes aspects of Celtic Faerie Lore.)
The Aziza of Dahomean Mythology (A race of supernatural little folk who are said to live in the Wilds—often beneath Anthills or within silk-cotton trees— and use their magic to help humans, as well as providing people with practical knowledge and spiritual wisdom.)
The Yumboes of Wolof Mythology (Spirits of the dead described as little folk with pearly white skin and silver hair who lived beneath hills and come out to dance beneath the Moonlight. They are known to hold great feasts, which humans are sometimes invited to.)
The Hellenic Nymphs, Sirens, and Kobaloi (As many know, Nymphs are animistic spirits of nature, considered beautiful, and known to interact with humans. Likewise, most will have heard of Sirens as beautiful, seductive, and dangerous spirits of the water who are known to entice and drown men. The Kobaloi, in turn, are described as a mischievous race of small goblin-like folk who are fond of playing tricks on human kind.)
The Basque Iratxoak, Laminak, and Mairuak (An Iraxto is a type of domestic Imp or Goblin known to help with human labors in the night, if properly propitiated. A Lamina, on the other hand, is a Water Maiden described similarly to Sirens or Nereids. They are generally understood to have webbed duck feet and long beautiful hair, which they are fond of combing by the waterside. They are known for both their tendency to offer aid to those who show them respect and propitiation, and their tendency to seduce and ensnare men. Some traditions speak of male giants called Mairuak, who are closely associated with Laminak, and are linked by some with the construction of megalithic structures.)
The Duende of Iberian mythology (A term quite similar to 'Faery' in its usage, which encompasses a diverse array of spiritual entities who are generally said to appear as humanoid, though frequently capable of shapeshifting. They are often associated with nature and are known for their involvement with humans—be it helpful, romantic, michevious, or vicious. They include goblin-esque folk known as Trasgu, Water Maidens known as Xana or Anjana, and supernatural beings called Mouros who take refuge beneath the earth and rarely emerge near sites like barrows. The most common conception of a Duende, however, describes them as a mischevious sort of domestic imp or goblin known for their dealings with the human world. )
The Aztec Chaneque (A sprite-like race of little folk who are associated with Elemental forces and are often conceived as guardians of nature. These beings were once propotiated by the Nàhuatl peoples in exchange for protection from blight, intruders, and evil forces. However, they could also inflict harm, and they were known to sometimes kidnap humans and take them to their home in the Underworld of of Mictlàn to be seduced. On an interesting sidenote, one folk-method of protecting against them when traveling in the forest was for a person to turn their clothing inside out—a charm many will recognize from Celtic Faerie Folklore.)
The Mayan Aluxo'ob (Spirits recognized in the mythological traditions of certain Maya peoples, who are generally associated with particular features of nature. They are described as small and humanoid, and they usually remain invisible, though they can assume physical form for the sake of interacting with humans. Sometimes, wandering Aluxo'ob are said to ask for offerings from farmers or travelers and may respond with wrath if refused. If its conditions are respectfully met, however, it is said that an Alux will provide protection, luck, and aid. In fact, some traditions hold that a farmer can erect a specialized form of Spirit House in order to welcome in an Alux that will aid them for a contracted period of time with tending crops, summoning favorable weather, and guarding property. What's more, there exist naming taboos that reflect themes of Celtic Faerie Lore.)
The Guarani Pombero (A spirit particularly important in Paraguay, though it appears in multiple mythological traditions from the surrounding area. The Pombero is generally conceived as a small hairy man who lives in forested areas and abandoned sites, and is known to cause mischief for humans. It is said that the Pombero can become invisible, change shape, and perfectly mimick the sounds of the wild. Usually, he is considered harmless, if mischevious—known for antics like food theft, the loosing of cattle, and the scattering of household objects. Though, he is also known also known to occasionally abduct and/or impregnate women, resulting in the births of hairy children. The Pombero is capable of being appeased, however, through offerings such as cigars, liquor, and honey. It is even said that, if these propitiations are observed consistently for long enough, the Pombero will take a liking to a person or persons and provide protection for their home and posessions, as well as leaving gifts of their own in return.)
The Tupi-Guarani Curupira (A spirit described in the folklore of Paraguay, Amazonia, Brasil, and Argentina as a little man with bright red hair and feet turned backwards, which it uses to obfuscate the trajectory of its footprints. They are said to live in the wild, and will prey on hunters who take more than they need, or who harm animals while they care for their Offspring. They are also said to ocassionally abduct and/or impregnate women, resulting in strange or unexplained births.)
The Iroquois Jogah (A race of magical little folk spoken of in Iroquois lore. They are said to be largely invisible, and an array of phenomena are associated with them, such as mysterious drumming noises, rings of bare earth, disembodied lights, and "bowls" found in stones. Offerings such as tobacco and fingernail parings could be left within these stone bowls, as propitiation to the Jogah. They are fond of mischief and games, though they can also be dangerous if disrespected. It is said, for example, that they will cause illness in homes constructed upon sites that they favor. The Jogah are also known for the variety of sub-groups into which they can be divided, generally associated with particular aspects or features of the natural world.)
& the Māori Patupaiarehe (Beings described in Māori mythology as a pale folk with red or golden hair. They are said to live in the mountains, hills, and deep forests in communities unseen by human eyes. They are known to influence the mist and clouds, to play music sweeter than that of any human hand, and were said to sometimes act with hostility towards humans who encroach or intrude upon their land. Despite this, however, most traditions state that Māori are able to converse with them at times.)
These are only a selection of traditional beliefs, though there are many more I won't attempt to list, and who knows how many more I've never heard. These are merely ones that have particularly caught my notice over time, and which seemed worth mentioning here. However, I am far from an anthropological expert, and I encourage others to ammend, contextualize, and add onto this information as they see fit—especially if they come from a culture I reference here. My goal is not to imply that all of these traditions are somehow directly connected to the Anglo-Celtic traditions, or that Anglo-Celtic mythology should be the cornerstone by which all folklore is considered; it's just the cultural background I have the most personal connection to/understanding of, and so I aim to speak mainly from a place of my own experience (though, I am actually half Paraguayan as well.)
So, in conclusion, while I do think that one's own cultural and regional context generally plays an important role in how one is likely to encounter the Gloaming Folk, I believe that people from virtually every culture have the capacity for working with them. I think that, when attempting to approach the Fae, it's a good idea for one to come at it from the perspective of their own heritage and regional lore, but at the same time, one can't always help the way spirits end up cultivating relationships with them (and, honestly, I think it is better for one to wait for the Fae to approach them whenever possible.)

not me coming up with random gloam headcanons after only one session... sunder folks, don't look!!! 🔪🔪
during our first combat, gloam cast shield of faith, and i described the spectral shield as "blooming" up before them as it manifested. i didn't mean anything behind it, i just couldn't think of another descriptor at the time, but a couple folks latched onto the flower and plant imagery and assumed there was a reason i said "bloom"
SO!! i thought this morning, what if one of his moms is a gardener with a flower shop back home, but her business was always failing during gloam's childhood because the plants would all die in his presence. but now that he's been away from home for years, her business is flourishing and everything is going so so well for his moms and his little sister. so much that he never visits home because he knows he'll just fuck things up for them, so much of his magic now incorporates plant and flower imagery almost absent-mindedly because he misses home </3

I know I've been an ass about it in the past, and I am sorry to the people that had actually put thought into the theory and weren't echoing YT videos. But if anyone still wants to share, I'd like to hear why folks think Melina is the Gloam Eyed Queen.
If the argument is simply that her closed eye colour is gloam-y, I'm sorry, I'll need some more reasons accompanying it to take it into account.

An offering of hawthorn honey and tea to the to the fairfolk neighbors in response to thier protection. We had bad wind gusts last night and the tree you see in the pic finally fell, what I find interesting is it fell away from the house even though the wind gusts were pushing towards my home.
My rite from last week included a request of a sign of acceptance in my offer, and I find this to be quite a loud response.

Happy #AudioDramaSunday everyone! I’m finally back home and had time to listen to shows again, and I sure listened to a bunch of them (6 to be exact). So, strap in for the ride!
First up Small Victories (@wgc-productions) came back for its second season and oh boy did it nosedive straight into chaos and drama. This show is so well written but it also stresses me out much more than all the horror shows I listen to lmao Can’t wait for the powder keg to explode in the upcoming episodes
Then we have another return, The Silt Verses (@thesiltverses) is back for its third season, and what a start! Genuinely one of my all time favourite shows and Carpenter is definitely one of my favourite characters from across all media. I’m so happy to have her back. Amazing performances from everyone around!
I also finally finished Two Flat Earthers Kidnap A Freemason (@goodpointepodcasts) and I just wanted to mention that that was a great finale! This was genuinely such a hilarious show and I hope there will be more of it.
Next up is the new episode from Shadows at the Door, written by Jamie Flanagan who’s worked on the Midnight Mass and The Haunting Of Bly Manor tv shows (isn't that just so neat?)! Great episode, less scary horror, more a reflection of human nature as we age. Really makes you think. Also loved the discussion after the episode (it gets depressing about the state of being a creative in our day and age 🫠)
We’re almost at the end of my list, but there are two more interesting shows I wanna talk about. First up, I’ve caught up with After The Gloaming, which is an anthology of gothic horror stories, and I’ve been really enjoying it, especially Night of the Rider and Arsenic & Old Men. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the season. There can never be enough horror anthologies!
And finally, I listened to the first episode of Levian (@levianpod), which I adored! Queer epic fantasy about the seas with family conflict! So up my alley! I know the rest of the show won’t release until next year, but I am eagerly awaiting it. They are currently crowdfunding to make the rest of season 1 a reality, so if you like epic fantasy and pirates definitely check it out (it only runs for a few more days!)
And that was it, folks! I haven’t decided yet what I’ll listen to next week, so if anyone has any recs, I’m all ears!

Mikaela Davis & Circles Around the Sun — After Sunrise (Kill Rock Stars/Jealous Butcher)
Tumblr media
The Grateful Dead cast a long shadow over this free-jamming, fusion-funk collaboration, which sprinkles sparkly harp dust over 1970s synth boogie. Harpist Mikaela Davis is likely best known for her work with Bob Weir. She has also played with Bon Iver and the Punch Brothers and made this lovely alt-country solo album. For its part, Circles Around the Sun came into being when guitarist Neal Casal needed an instrumental band to play incidental music for the Dead-celebrating Fare Thee Well concerts in 2015. Casal died in 2019; John Lee Shannon now plays guitar, while Justin Kreutzmann (son of the Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann) is on drums.
Given those extensive links, you might expect After Sunrise to lean into a hippie folk good time groove, but while the vibes are sunny, the sounds tap into Tangerine Dream-ish synth prog. “Gloaming Way” starts in pristine, pretty harp figures, a sun-dappled, folk-rooted reverie. However, it’s only about a minute before the aesthetic shifts, a 1970s boogie arising from syncopated guitar and harp, laid atop big blasts of synth. It’s a percolating mix, expertly played but resembling sitcom sound-trackery. “Moonbow” likewise dusts blurting funk with trebly harp star dust, an uneasy meld of porno-thrust and dream sequence. If you like Stanley Clarke’s gleaming, futuristic funk or Emerson Lake & Palmer’s technologically enabled arena rock, you might enjoy this. It’s a little too clean and muzaak-y for me.
The set closes with a long, live performance of “Language,” the title track from Circles Around the Sun’s fourth full-length, which gives you a sense for this band’s loose, vibe-y conjunction of disco groove and intergalactic riot. Davis’ harp careens over pop-locked syncopation, leaving cascading trails of silver on surreal washes of tone. It sure doesn’t sound like the Grateful Dead, more like an instrumental Earth Wind and Fire or “The Hustle” on a lot of acid. Not my bag, but maybe yours.
