I love how Isobel and Dame Aylin flip a few tropes on their heads but I just realized one trope we all hate to see that gets obliterated by them is "bury your gays"
Isobel was dead in the ground and Aylin was imprisoned in Shar's domain to be killed and resurrected over and over again for a century. Isobel gets resurrected by Myrkul and Aylin is freed by the player (depending on your actions) and the two are finally reunited to presumably live happily ever after.

Did Silver kill Flint?
I keep seeing cold ass takes in the Black Sails side of tumblr that make my blood boil.
Look, I got into Black Sails in 2017, three weeks after the finale aired. Back then, there seemed to be an understanding that the "Silver killed Flint" interpretation was just a fringe theory from straight people made uncomfortable by the queer lead getting a happy ending. Personally, it was my first encounter with the phrase "unbury your gays" (having learnt "bury your gays" a year earlier with The 100). It seemed to be generally accepted that Flint lived, and that this was the whole point.
Now, it would appear that a shift has happened in the fandom, where the idea of Silver killing Flint is no longer treated as a theory by straight weirdos but as a canon, onscreen event, and these posts come from queer fans. It seems to come from younger fans who were about 12 or 13 in 2017. It's so mindboggling to me.
The arguments for this Silver-Killed-Flint thing is usually the same two: birds flying away and Silver's men turning around in the forest, as in reaction to a noise, which is interpreted as a gunshot.
Like, I'm just elaborating on a rant I sent to my friends earlier today here but, if Silver killed Flint, then :
Why would we be shown an entire sequence with one of Silver's henchmen looking for Thomas where he is?
If Thomas and Flint are dead, why aren't we shown their deaths? It's an actual rule in cinema that a character whose death isn't shown on screen isn't dead, a rule that the show does follow (we see Billy's funeral but not his corpse). Besides, Black Sails doesn't shy away from showing death on screen, even for main characters. Then, why not show how Thomas died instead of telling us? Why not show us Silver shooting Flint? The writers trust their viewers to understand the pattern, and understand that the reason we do not see their deaths is because they aren't dead.
Why would Silver bring up Thomas to Flint if he'd planned on killing him? Or if, as I've also seen it said, it was just a lie he made on the spot for Madi ?
And talking about Madi, I've seen A LOT of people saying she would never forgive Silver. And to that I genuinely have to ask, have you seen their last appearence in the show? I dont mean their argument in the cabin, I mean the scene where Silver sits on top of a hill and turns around to find Madi waiting for him on the path. I mean the scene where he walks towards her and she waits for him. So, my question here, if she wasn't gonna forgive Silver, why is she waiting for him on that hill? Nevermind the fact that Treasure Island's Long John Silver is in a relationship with a Black woman (I've seen posts saying that could be Max, and really wtf??), what is the point of showing us this scene if she's not gonna forgive him? Why not stop their arc at the cabin where she sends him away?
At the time when Black Sails' finale aired, Supernatural was still queerbaiting its audience, and Sherlock ended in a fucking shitshow. People were throwing fits over Bill Potts, Doctor Who's first ever onscreen lesbian companion because she was a lesbian with a masculine name. A year before that, The 100, a very popular tv show at the time, had just killed it's only lesbian character and faced so much uproar and backlash for it. (That was my entry into the LGBT+ community, by the way : the first character to make me think I might actually like women getting killed on screen two scenes after having had sex with the female lead). Sense8's two-hour long finale and Love, Simon wouldn't air for another year.
So yeah, if you weren't into queer media back in 2017 (and omg I sound like such an old twat), I don't think you can understand just how important that ending, with Flint being reunited with the love of his life after so much pain and loss, was.
If your interpretation of Black Sails is that the events of Treasure Island happened the way the book tells you, then I'm sorry to tell you this but you completely missed the point of the show.

This Belos Essay is Gross
I fully admit I did this to myself. I voluntarily went HEY you know what animates me like a vengeful eidolon to the point where I could chew solid stone while laughing? Ragging on the history of Christianity in America! Oh look! A cute gay show about disabled witches sticking it to Puritan Cult-Peddling Murder Grandpa (also known as Ash's personal bugbear)? SIGN ME UP? Lets dissect this dreadful son of a bitch in the context of his theological bullshit!
But then I get to the parts where I have to think about Belos and all the Grimwalkers and its sicker the more I think about it. Everyone knows of course its just. The depth of the violation and desecration and depravity in its own context is Beyond Grotesque.
I'll elaborate more on this later, but Puritans were obsessed with how a person's remains were kept. This scabrous donkey's bastard was mutilating the unburied remains of the brother he murdered for 400 years. The thing that makes me insane is that any attempts to tell himself "I'm saving your soul, Caleb" had to have petered out pretty quick in that process. He discards the Christian name. Starts calling them all Hunter. Witch Hunter, a title, a job description, a fucking factory tag. He even started branding them after a while, which we know now is a death sentence no matter how perfectly obedient they could have hoped to be. He knows he's not saving Caleb. He's farming the experience of his death.
"I'm starting to think you make those things just to destroy them."
Belos demurs, "Of course I don't, Collector. It hurts every time he chooses to betray me."
The fact they included this line from the Collector--someone who has observed and gleefully enabled this sick fuck for centuries--seems to suggest Belos' denial here is a weak one.
He does enjoy it! They show us! As soon as Luz and Hunter enter the mindscape, he goes out of his way to sabotage Hunter's loyalty. He gleefully drags the kids around, building up the reveals that will make Luz crumple to her knees and destroy Hunter's entire world. The timing. The showmanship of it all. He smiles when he flicks Hunter's little forelock.
"What a shame. Of all the Grimwalkers, you looked the most like him :)"
These are the words he intends to kill this kid by. The dude has been playing this game for CENTURIES and still enjoys the process of torturing them before he slaughters them. How many Grimwalkers died with some variation of "What? Who is Caleb?" on their lips--but the part that haunts me are the ones who lived long enough to say "Sorry" before they were killed. Phillip isn't saving Caleb's soul, he's punishing him over and over.
So why does he do this? How does the Puritan part factor into it? Other than the pleasure of murder that is. It makes me think of how the main purpose of missionaries is to experience rejection. Particularly when it comes to sending kids out from the church. The purpose of the whole affair there is to reinforce that The World Bad, and Rejects the Word of God, and the Only REAL community you have is the Church. They understand you. This creates not just the insulation that gives them a chance to practice the script of the Rejected Religious Warrior, but create distance from reality.
Belos has been working on the worlds most horrible DIY project. He's been doing it for 400 years. What on earth can sustain that laser focus, him working while his body monsterizes and turns to evil Ghibli goo around him? Man hasn't eaten real food in 400 years.
His brother's death! The point of no return in Phillips villain origin (inciting incident: the moment Caleb fell for Evelyn). Each incarnation is going to to have a witch's pointed ears and the Grimwalkers pink eyes, wear different scars that Belos himself stuck there, but it's still his face. Sure it's a younger face than Caleb had when HE died, but at this point it hardly matters. Phillip is farming Caleb's death to re-inspire the moment where genocide entered his heart. These witches have taken you from me, Caleb. I'll make them all pay.
But first, I'll make YOU pay.
This bitch was going to take time out of the Day of Unity to kill Hunter if he got him. My god. Given that he was pressed for time I like to think it would have been quick but god if this is any indication...ugh.

percy/annabeth/getting divorced- these two have pissed off hera, goddess of marriage, so many times, you know the divorce arc is gonna be wild. as soon as percy proposes, there's a new Prophecy of Seven, and it's just about all the different ways percy and annabeth are going to get divorced. every single one of them comes true over the years, but they keep getting remarried anyway bc they love each other. eventually no one shows up for their weddings except grover, who still cries every time
mr d/tantalus- the sheer amount of homosexual toxicity between these two is horrendous and undeniable. they are exes, worsties, enemies with no benefits, they hate each other, they hate everyone else together, they understand each others misery perfectly, theyre having rancid, unenthusiastic hate sex every night while mr d bitches about the fact that he cant drink wine and misses chiron and tantalus bitches about the fact that he cant drink ANYTHING and misses not being eternally damned
grover/clarisse- when clarisse is 18 or 21 or whatever, chiron immediately prescribes her therapy weed for her many, many issues (including having lost the love of her life, silena beauregard back in the day) and everyone knows grover has the dankest kush the camp half blood woods so they start talking more and she bullies the shit out of him but eventually its cool. clarisse is a satyr's godmother after all, which makes her a friend of the wild, and grovers weed fucking rules, which makes clarisse willing to only playfully shit talk him for being a massive loser in every other regard. one day grover asks percy to be the best man at their wedding and, later, the godfather to their litter of goatlets and that is the day percy jackson walks directly into the sea, never to be seen again
piper/reyna- listen. i know that no demigod can heal reynas heart, but the look on jason's face when she tells him her and piper are dating would be really fucking funny and that's better than being "healed" or whatever, once theyve had their laughs reyna and piper high five and break up
nico/jason- unbury your gays bitch, nico's dating a ghost! once his gf leaves him for another girl, jason probably gets to wondering what this lgbt stuff is all about but, tragically, before he can date a boy, he dies, somehow, idk i never read the apollo books, BUT who do we know who is 1- gay and 2- can commune with the dead? nico di angelo baby! nico summons jason by putting a wendys chicken sandwich on his grave and confesses his love and jason accepts so they go on ghost dates in elysium and its very cute until jason realizes that no, actually, he Is straight and this happens

1. What is your current favorite film?
Does this mean like my top favorite film or like the film I like most currently at this moment? I'm choosing the latter. I have an all time personal top 5 but I'm choosing the latter, which is a toss-up between Enys Men and Sanctuary. Enys Men is such meditative genuine-feeling folk horror that's not afraid to be in its own world and expect the viewer to step up to the plate, and Sanctuary is such a hot, sexy, deeply fucked up toxic romance that was made especially for me personally.
3. What is a film you absolutely despise and why?
Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac duo was what made me finally give up on him, later than I should have. I forgave him a lot in previous movies bc they made it worth my while but just no.
Oh, and Aronofsky's stupid fucking Biblical hot mess mother!. I almost walked out of that one.
4. Is there a film that you love except for the ending? What would you change about the ending?
I can't think of anything specific so in general I would unbury many gays.

Episode 9-
Listen, you never plan to retire or to tell your husband you're going to be able to do whatever he wants after this one last mission/jump. That's when things go wrong.

Time for a character roundup! on the axes of interesting and likeability...
Lorca- Interesting character if a little cliche, unlikeable. 9/10
Burnham- Interesting character, likeable. 10/10
Saru- Interesting, undecided. 7/10
Tyler- I don't think I like him much. 5/10
Tilly- Not particularly interesting, but likeable and relatable. 10/10
Georgiou- Interesting, likeable, badass, but -1 point for being dead. 99/10
Admiral- Not particularly interesting yet, but has potential. Undecided. 6/10
It's interesting that they have evasive maneuver patterns... It seems like a waste of a good pilot's instincts. The way that the captain has to decide which pattern to use, relay it to the pilot, the pilot has to recall what motions to take for that pattern, and then enact it feels like it would take precious seconds that might be better used in a "It doesn't matter what you do as long as you do something" reaction.
Alternate universe it is!
Michael's hair is always excellent.
Man I knew there was something still shady about Tyler. Fuckin Manchurian Candidate. Dude is not ready to be doing any of what he's trying to do. "I need you to trust me." No. You can't trust yourself, how are you going to expect anyone else to trust you? Tyler and Lorca both, man. Making decisions to protect themselves that can (and certainly will) put others in danger.
Hey Terran Empire, that's the same as the Enterprise's alternate universe.
Hah Tilly's captain. Talk as little as possible. That might be a problem.
And then Lorca does a Scottish voice for the Engineer. :joy: that a Scotty reference?
I like the way they actually show the tech that (as far as i know) got handwaved in other shows. The change of the Discovery's designation by robot, the synthesizing of uniforms and ranks. It makes it feel more scifi vs scifantasy.
Heh they specifically test for Manchurian/brainwashing stuff.
The weird half bob of Tilly's is... interesting.

I don't... I don't know if I don't like this thing with Tyler because he's not convincing? Or if I don't like the arc itself? I'm not sure.
Now that's an interesting moral quandary. The easy route is to let the Terrans execute him- he's a threat and a murderer. But is it 'right'?

I forget where to put it now, but the Defiant... is that the one that the mirror!Enterprise found in that docking bay? The time fuckery ontop of the parallel universes has my head spinning, especially since I wasn't closely watching ENT.
Episode 12
I didn't like the mirrorverse episodes of Enterprise- they were both too dark for the show they were in and yet not dark enough to be believable.
I do like this arc, though. It feels like it has the right weight and other than the Tyler plot, it feels believable and consistent. The characters are interacting with the world in consistent, believable ways. Maybe it was because in Enterprise, we were watching actors in different characters?
Fixing Stamets and the only way home while also pretending to be a bloodthirsty captain is a lot of pressure for a cadet.

I was trying to figure out why they couldn't pick between turning Klingon into human or overlaying the Klingon personality into Tyler, but I guess I misunderstood. They overlaid TYLER ontop of the Klingon turned human. Man that's complicated.
How weird it must be to hear the man you loved died... from him.

The finals are over, and I did proofread the paper! And I was pretty proud of how I did it. It was a very interesting paper about anti-colonialist movements. But now that I am free, here are the Lily updates. In list form, categories and everything 
Lillys chaotic dreams: I wanted to start with the completely what the fuck things first. So let me tell you about this dream I had in which there were demon fights, but somewhere in the middle of the dream was like a mini commercial break or some thing, and it was Shrek and regulus black on a date in a Burger King. It is a Pairing that has boggled my mind, but my friends think I should write fanfiction about it because it’s just so out there that it would be a just a chaos move.
Lillys love life: I have a girlfriend now. and she is lovely. But also chaotic gay moment, we’ve gone out to get cookies, and on the box she put happy first kiss day. And then we went to my parents house and spent the night over there, and I left the box downstairs with the writing facing out, thankfully my mom didn’t notice, and if she did she did not say anything, which leads me to believe she didn’t notice because my moms always saying something about some thing.  but I was still in a panic that whole rest of the day because I was going to be going on a plane with my mom for the next four hours, and I did not want to be confronted. I didn’t have a good enough excuses prepared yet.
Lily’s performance opportunities: I will be finally accomplishing my dream of performing at a diner. There’s a music festival happening in the city, and I applied to perform, and two places got back to me about performances. It’s going to be the first time I’ve done a live performance in about two years maybe and I am so excited. I’m still trying to make my Setlist, but it is slowly but surely coming together. If you ever have any recommendations, feel free to send them my way. I’m also trying to decide if I want any of my originals on the list, and if so do I want them to be fully finished, or just giving people a peek on the things that I’ve written to see if it even goes over well with others. I DK, I’m very insecure about my songwriting so I’m quite hesitant with sharing it with others, especially at a performance venue
The negatives: mental health has been honestly decline recently, I did start going to therapy which was pretty good, although it did unbury some past traumas that I quite forgot about which has not been quite fun to relive. I also lost one of my best friends of like nine years, we were growing apart, and it led to some really toxic situations, and we also just realize things about each other from the past that we’ve done to each other that were kind of fucked up. And I just think that we really brought out some of the worst qualities in each other as much as we helped each other grow, and that’s just a very hard thing to wrap your head around, that’s some thing could’ve been so special and precious and have helped you out of some difficult times, and yet has left you with so many scars and have not always been the healthiest situation to be in. I also had a family member going to the hospital which was quite terrifying because he’s been declining in health recently, and he was a family member that practically helped raise me, so I just end up becoming very worried win his health gets worse. Also, I was going to go study abroad in the Netherlands in the fall, and almost everything had been prepared, and then the school got back to me saying that they didn’t think that they could be accessible to my blindness which really sucked because I’ve been excited. But also, it’s one of the times where I was explicitly told that I could not do some thing that I’ve been dreaming of doing for a while simply because I was blind, and it’s a shitty fucking feeling because it’s not the first time, but it’s one of the most obvious. So yeah, I’ve really been trying to look at the really great things that have been happening in my life, but it’s been kind of difficult.
Lillys bad bitch behavior: I did a bike ride through all five New York City boroughs. That was like 45 miles at least, and it felt great.
Lily’s job: I’m going to be a diversity equity and inclusion intern at a bank, so that’s exciting. I’m very curious how much they are actually committed to the work because I worked in that field at my school this semester, and they are quite horrible at it, and so are most other places that claim that they are committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. But, I am hoping for the best, especially based on some of the stories they’ve told.
Things Dani should be proud of: I went on vacation, twice. Lily taking breaks? I know it sounds insane, but it happened. Like I mentioned, I started going to therapy. It started off at school counseling, but I’m looking into some stuff for the summer. We are working on self healing this year.
That’s probably not it, but that’s all I can think of. I hope that you have been taking care of yourself, and ILY!
PS: it’s almost my birthday, and as reparations for IALS, I think you should start thinking of a Mavid Royalty snippet… Just saying.
