I'm gonna make a kind of pretentious rant rn bc I saw a post I didn't like so bear with me
So like, there's this post I saw. it starts out with "finally figured out exactly what it is about the 'stop complaining about the lack of women in shonen anime, if you want stories with strong and interesting female characters shojo is right there' argument that bothers me so much" and then it says this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll be honest, the biggest annoyance here is calling shoujo and shounen "genres." And to me that just shows that even though OP seems to get the actual intention behind the above statement, they still have some fundamental biases against shoujo that makes them think all it has to offer is "girl stuff."
Like, look at the comparisons they give. Princess Tutu and Madoka (which isn't even confirmed a shoujo) vs Naruto and MHA. Ask literally any shoujo fan for a rec that compares to Naruto and I can guarantee you neither of those above will be the first to cross their minds. Because surprise surprise! Shoujo does, in fact, contain as much deep, complex, and interesting stuff as shounen! And that even includes action! I can give you so many examples of a shoujo being mistaken for a shounen (cough Banana Fish cough) or a shounen mistaken for a shoujo (cough Horimiya cough) because demographics are not defined borders. You can't just say that of course someone who likes action/adventure won't like the Girl Stuff. It's a reductive view of what female-centered media can be in and of itself.
But like, I get it. As someone who also grew up with traditionally masculine interests, it can be annoying to hear people say that you should try the Girl things for Girls. But I'm gonna be real here, you just straight up aren't going to get good female representation in your traditionally masculine interests unless you also show support for the traditionally feminine. Which leads into this addition to that post:
Tumblr media
Like that's the thing about this. It's all well and good to say that boys deserve good female characters. They absolutely do and we should continue to advocate for such, but that sentiment rings so hollow when those good female characters already exist and y'all just don't want to touch them. I get that you don't want good rep for some random series, you want it for Naruto, for One Piece, for Demon Slayer. But I am stressing so much that the reason shoujo fans are so insistent that you try these other series out is because that's how you show that you want it.
Because again, it's perfectly acceptable to clamor for good rep in the series you already love, but by consuming nothing but shows/manga made for men, by men, with majority male casts, you are telling them that that's what you want.
A caveat: I'm not pointing at you the reader or OP specifically and saying "it's YOUR 🫵 fault shounen has poorly written women because you haven't read Fruits Basket," because it's obviously more complicated than just pure numbers. But it's frustrating to see people plead for y'all to diversify your reading portfolio only to get met with the brick wall non-solution of "well boys deserve good female characters too you know!!"
Like yeah! They do! We never said they didn't! But all saying that has done is plop us right back to where we started. What am I supposed to do with that? What am I supposed to do with any of this? As great as it would be for MHA to suddenly start treating it's female characters better, we both know that isn't happening. You gave us a problem and we're trying to offer a solution. So why are we the bad guys here just because you have preconceived notions of what shoujo is like compared to shounen?
And to add another caveat, it's ok to not like shoujosei stories people recommend! You don't have to like Basara or Yona or OHSHC or any other that you may have tried and dropped. I don't want it to sound like I'm guilt tripping people into being ashamed for not enjoying stuff they don't enjoy, but 9 times out of 10 the people pushing back with that kind of attitude haven't even tried. How do you even know you won't like the series we recommend if you don't even care enough to know that they aren't all one genre?
And I guess that's it. Like, at the end of the day you can do whatever you want, I just wanted to put my frustrations out there. Which is why I screenshotted this instead of rbing OP. I'm sure they want a lengthy argument just as much as I do (not at all).

Hello! ♡
Oh yay, I'm so glad you liked it! ♡ The dream was really cute and I knew I just had to write it, and I agree! Hifumi in his suit and a frilly apron is cute to think about!
I'm glad you like your new place! It's always nice when there's job opportunities, and if you don't have a job at the moment, I hope you find one you enjoy (that pays well too! lol)
I'm feeling much better today than I have been, no more cough, no more sore throat! I just have a stuffy nose now and have been sneezing a lot, with a slight headache. I've been staying home and called off work as I don't want to get others sick, and luckily my boss was understanding! Thank you for asking how I'm doing, I appreciate it! (and thank you for the well wishes too!)
Oh...my heart...Rosho!! This is so good omg! Waiting to leave with me, the students starting rumors, going drinking with him on the weekends, Rei and Sasara sneaking around to hype him up!!!!! I! I love this so much omg I am eating this up, this is like a 5 star meal ahhhhh my heart!! ♡
I like the idea of Rosho inviting me for drinks and Sasara and Rei just...inviting themselves and joining us lol I don't really drink that much (as I don't really like the taste of alcohol lol) but when I do I usually get mixed drinks, the kinds that are fruity and don't really taste like alcohol (like a screwdriver or a pineapple upside down. I know there's a cake by the same name but a pineapple upside down is a cocktail with pineapple juice, cherry juice, cake flavored vodka, and a few other things. It's very good! My mom recommended it to me as I had never heard of it before, but I recommend it if you like sweet mixed drinks! I'm sorry Hifumi but I don't like champagne! Please forgive me!)
Would I drink whatever drink Rosho got me? Absolutely. The same applies to Hitoya, even if it's whiskey I'll do my best to stomach it for him! ♡
Speaking of drinking, all I can think about is this post lol Like imagine the cat is Rosho!! ♡
Cardcaptor Sakura is one of my favorite animes! I absolutely love the designs, the art style, the characters, the animation! And it is very 90's yes lol Other shojo animes/manga I really like include Fruits Basket, Lovely Complex, Princess Jellyfish, Full Moon wo Sagashite (this one holds a special place in my heart!), and Kimi ni Todoke!
AWWW! YOU ARE TOO SWEET!! ♡♡ I've been told before that I can be polite or "too formal" when speaking so to hear someone say this is just, too kind! Thank you!
AHHHHH It's no problem! I'm always happy to help and I know how hard it is to find merch, especially at a good price! Like I said if you're even looking for something specific just let me know and I can help you find it! Also, suruga-ya sells merch for a lot of different anime/manga/game series, including Twisted Wonderland!
They have a lot of Ruggie stuff, including this pin from one of my favorite series! Doesn't he look so cute here? And it's only $3.39 USD! They also have his halloween pin (here) that I also think is really nice, and only $3.39 USD!
Plus they have this Ruggie mini cushion/pillow that's only $8.64 USD (which is a really good deal considering the size!)
Thank you! ♡
Ahhhh I'm super in love already. Everything is gorgeous and sunny and the sun is bright and there's tons of job opportunities!! I'm really happy I went through with it and moved out of state. I am gonna be soooooo rich and I want a cute house (if I can afford it heheh!~!)
I'm glad you're feeling better!! Maybe Doppo checking on you was real since he's worried about your health!!! Next... Rosho will come to see you... And Hitoya-san!!
I think Rei and Sasara invite themselves to your dates like in romcoms. They wear sunglasses and big coats thinking you won't notice them sitting at the table next to you to pretty much chaperone your date haha. Rosho is a lil' sweaty and nervous but he is bursting with joy on the inside from the fact you agreed to go on a date with him!! Ahhhh I get it too!! I'm not a big alcohol person, I like social drinking. I don't like strong drinks and sadly I got sick off of whiskey (Fireball my beloved) so I stick to frufru sweet drinks. I just had this mega yum blue vodka lemonade ahhhh it was so yum. I think Rosho would nervously offer you a sip of his drink if you wanted to try it but the thought of someone as polite as him drinking a huge beer paired with a cute flowery drink like yours... It's very aesthetically pleasing to me. OHHHH THE KITTY COVERED IN KISSES!!!!!!!! Rosho's life has been changed he never wants to scrub your lipstick marks off!!!!!!!
I think my absolute FAVE 'vintage' anime would be the OG Sailor Moon. Also I love Princess Jellyfish the kids of today would never understand the amazement of watching/reading it for the first time. My favorite Shojo manga... It's kinda lame but I love Say I Love You. I have a super fond memory of watching it in my tiny bedroom when I was younger and loving the dynamic of aggie loner girl and the super cute popular boy is so insanely in love with her it makes him dumb. Ughhh highly recommend reading it the anime is great too but I'm a big manga purist.
Oh I don't think there's anything wrong with being too polite or formal!! I have a bad habit of being too casual haha. I think it's cool!
AHHHHHHHHH RUGGIE BUGGIE MY BABYYYYYYYYY!!!!! Omg I need more Ruggie pins for my ita bag thank you thank you for the links ohhh I think I heard about this website on TikTok??? I recognize the format and I think I saw it when I was looking for Hello Kitty merch but I didn't think it was legit!! OH THE RUGGIE PILLOW IS SO CUUUUTEEEEE!!!!! I can have him close with me at my desk hehehe. Ohhhh I wish to pay you back for your act of kindness I want to return this kind act I really do I am indebted to you!!!!! <3 <3 <3

omg i just saw your reply, my bad!! i absolutely love that idea, to be an observer in a story ;o;/
do you have any favorite romcoms or romantic shows?? if so, i'd love to hear what you love about them!!
no problem darling!! i’m happy you enjoyed my answer.
unfortunately i haven’t watched a lot of romcoms or romantic movies/shows but out of those i watched, my favourite are :
tsuiraku jk to haijin kyoushi : it’s my favourite manga (sorry it’s not a movie or show but they just made a live-action about it and it’s super good!). it’s about a teacher and a student falling in love (i know it’s controversial and not everyone likes it) but the story is really cute, well written and dark humoured <3 also, i find it so interesting because, except for the romance, there are some really good life lessons and morals. now, for the romance, it’s crazy because they love each other so so so much and they’re always doing things to help/make each other happy. they went through a lot in their lives and having each other just bring them peace. also, they’re trying so hard to communicate and understand each other. i love them so so much!!!!! 🫶🏻
10 things i hate about you : a absolute classic. kat is so relatable and the idea that we don’t need men and our worth isn’t instituted by them is so important. but i’m also a romantic at heart and finding the perfect guy still is dream! really everything is perfect about this movie and they portrayed their love story so beautifully.
fruits basket : again a manga (there’s also an anime). a real CLASSIC in shojos and in my opinion the best one out there. we get to see love in all its forms, broken relationships, new ones creating, some friendships turning into romance etc. it has everything you could ask for. furthermore, it’s not only talking about love as this beautiful and easy feeling but as a complex feeling with a lot of mistakes made and the different forms and approaches it can have. also, tohru my beloved she’s so perfect i wish i was her <3
flower of evil : this one is a kdrama and oh my God. i won’t really talk about the plot but the love between jiwoon and heesung!!!!!!!!! it’s sooo incredible like heesung doesn’t understand feelings and all but he fell in love with jiwoon… and they just did crazy things for each other out of love… my beloved!!
thank you so much for this ask i really love it :D please feel free to give me your opinion

are you a fan of any shojo/josei works?
Wish I were! Josei stories in particular seem to run the gamut of mature stories in interesting locations that don’t really fit to any one mold or trope, but I read manga on an irregular basis and rarely read something I haven’t already seen others talking about. There’s doubtless some really good stuff out there…but the few that I have tried (Fruits Basket, Ao Haru Ride) don’t fit my preference for either loud, dumb, and action-packed. In general I’m not a fan of m/f romances and the tropes associated with them in female-targeted manga (the overbearing/controlling older guy, the clumsy everygirl, the female friends who function mostly as cheerleaders) which makes it hard to get into some stuff.
Shoujo/josei that I have enjoyed are
BANANA FISH, a violent thriller/action subtextual BL that reads as a bizarre fusion of The Wire and That One Darkfic You Read At Age 15, a tight series with allowances for 80s + bl tropes that should absolutely be read with a list of CWs.
Shimanami Tasogare/Our Dreams At Dusk, a sort of pan-demographic slice of life with some melodramatic moments, you’ve doubtless heard of it but it is as good as they say. A quick and impactful read, I want to read the mangaka’s other works but I really need to emotionally prepare myself first lol.
GSNK, it’s funny!
Hakuouki. Purely a matter of timing. I watched it as my third anime ever and became obsessed with the way the side characters were built up in drama CDs and bonus content, many of which only exist as translated on the tokio-fujita LJ by a person who is now unfortunately deceased(?) but back in the day successfully pulled a minor scam or two within the fandom. Pretty mid, has all the same fatal flaws as any VN adaptation, interesting cast and ideas HAMSTRUNG by having to stick to the main m/f romance, women robbed of all relevance and agency, somehow the male protag’s love interest in the prequel is far better written than the female protag. This series is indivisible from my love of all animanga so I can’t tell how good or bad it is. I can only say that I spent a very very long time thinking about it. Classic shinsengumi story, Japan is torn by a civil war between traditionalist and modernizing factions, but also there are magically enhanced vampiresoldiers and a line of bloodsucking demons seeking to continue their race through eugenic matchups. It’s Anime as anything.
There are a few others that fall into josei/shoujo-adjacent but that aren’t officially in the category I think? After Hours (mature and sedate slice of life romance), No. 6 (slow biological sci fi), Shadows House (ontological mystery thriller) are all series I’ve enjoyed but never quite got to ‘fan’ except for Shadows House, which I really need to catch up on
Bonus rec: Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East is as far as I can tell just a cringe, tropey bl-inflected adventure with godawful pacing that I somehow watched in grade 10? Absolutely would not recommend for a quality watch but it’s obscure enough that it has a certain novelty.
I’ve rb’d a few josei/shoujo recs for future references as I keep searching for something to vibe with so all recommendations are welcome! Next one I am considering a read of is XXXHolic, haven’t yet started because while the pros are that it is CLAMP, the cons are that it is also CLAMP and my list of works to consume is too long to spend time trying to figure out whose legs are whose.
If you’re looking for manga to read, I have to recommend Screentone Club podcast! They do first-volume reviews of mostly new manga without anime adaptations that hit the sweet spot of brief, literate, and indicative without being spoilery. Doesn’t work well for series that get good in the 8th volume, but it’s my go-to for broadening my awareness of the current scene.

Animes the Haikyuu characters would watch
TYSM for over 100 notes on my first post!! I thought of this post while finishing the Kuroko No Basket Movie and I thought it would be an interesting take based on their personalities.
Tumblr media
Hinata Shoyo: One Piece
It's already canon that Shoyo likes One Piece and I definitely agree. Despite it being so long, he loves the adventures Luffy goes through and the hardships and the way they all work together. (Can you tell I'm only 6 episodes into One Piece?).
Kageyama Tobio: Moriarty the Patriot
Okay this is just a personal take because I love both Kageyama and Moriarty the Patriot. We all know he has an analytical brain(reserved for volleyball only) however he would probably find it so interesting with the class structure and moral issues that are presented in the show. I feel like he wouldn't know who to side with but he would find it very interesting.
Yachi Hitoka: Fruits Basket
Aw wait this is actually so cute because Yachi and Tohru are literally such lovely characters and I think Yachi would love Tohru so much. She would love the romance aspect of it but also the different problems that are with the Sohma's.(Yes I'm only 11 episodes in I still love it though).
Sugawara Koushi: Attack on Titan
I'm a big AOT fan and Sugawara was my first choice for this anime. He would probably join a group chat to discuss moral and ethical problems in the story and discussing Zeke or Eren's plan. I feel like he would also make playlists for the different characters. He definitely owns the entire manga but wouldn't spoil it to anime-only's. He would be so nervous for the ending that's coming on April 9th(I am too Suga). He would also force Daichi to watch AOT I just know it.
Kuroo Tetsurou: Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku
Ahh omg I love this romance anime so much because it's more grown up and mature, but also has classic shojo themes. Kuroo would enjoy the comedy aspect and the romance of the characters too. He definitely sees himself as Kabakura(And I see myself as Koyanagi 😎).
Kenma Kozume: Tokyo Ghoul
Okay tbh I'm not that far into Tokyo Ghoul but I'm further into the manga and the manga is so much better so I just know Kenma would own the entire manga collection and Kuroo would definitely go to his room and read them. He relates to Kaneki when it come to fitting into society(obv not to the extent of Kaneki but ykyk).
Kunimi Akira: Devilman Crybaby
Lowkey the anime was uh traumatizing. Once again, the moral discussion would be very intense with Kunimi. After watching the last episode he would probably just stare at the ceiling for a few hours in pain.
Matsukawa Issei: Jujutsu Kaisen
I love JJK so much and I have a strong feeling Matsukawa would as well. His favorite character would hands down be Gojo. He relates to him idc I hc Matsu as being a prankster and kinda childish(in a good way). He likes the action scenes and despite Gojo being his favorite character, he would definitely love Maki because she's so strong despite not being able to see curses. He definitely admires her and probably has a JJK poster in his room. I bet he does those hand signs Megumi does. I also hc he has a dog so he would call his dog "divine dog".
Akaashi Keiji: Horimiya
Literally this is such a good romance anime. He would love how they don't wait until the end for Hori and Miyamura to get together like most romance anime do. He also enjoys how different their personalities are and Miyamura's backstory of being an outsider but ending up making friends.
Konoha Akinori: Kuroko no Basket
Konoha gives me vibes of a guy who would watch sports anime. Kuroko no Basket is pretty dramatic and comedic which is why I think he would like it. His favorite character is probably Aomine(same Konoha). This anime would definitely make this man into a hardcore basketball fan and he probably would religiously watch March Madness every year.
Kita Shinsuke: Yuri on Ice
This one just spoke to me. Kita would really enjoy the music and the actual skating because it's very clean(I really can't think of another word lol) and just so beautiful to watch. I bet he would sit down every Wednesday with his grandmother and they both would be glued to the screen and mesmerized by the animation.
Semi Eita: Death Note
First off, I just know this man is a Mello stan(As he should be), and he really loves the OTS and just the entire soundtrack. He likes the back and forth between the characters, and he definitely tries to convince Tendou to watch so they can discuss Light's character. He would probably hate the ending and only like it up to like episode 24/25.
Hirugami Sachirou: Banana Fish
This is just a gut feeling because I love Hirugami's character so much and I love Banana Fish. Hiru would love the soundtrack and would probably have it playing all the time while doing his homework(I do this too hehe) and he would love the symbolism and the tiny details that are put in. His favorite character would be Ash(also same) because of his strength and intelligence.
Tumblr media
These are mostly my favorite anime, lmk if you want more in my requests!!

The Fruits Basket manga readers are exhausting… and have completely turned me off to actually reading the manga.
I loved the episode and as an anime only, have loved the series. I mean… they didn’t have to remake it at all.
You could have just had the incomplete poorly adapted story forever. Like most shojo based anime.
Can’t wait to enjoy rewatches in the future without the constant endless nitpicking because the ADAPTATION didn’t put every piece of dialogue and scene on screen.

So I know FMA and Black Butler are manga women have written... what other ones are there? In your recent post I saw you have another favourite manga made by women excluding FMA, what is it?
I personally enjoy reading female authors depending on the story. Of course I can’t speak for them all, but I notice they don’t over-sexualize characters, even the men in their stories. Not saying it’s all male authors who do this, but they seem to over-sexualize characters more in their stories then women? What always gets me is when men say they don’t know how to write women but yet some women do it so easily... I feel men overthink it. We are opposite genders, not an alien species 👽 Like, just write a character and just label it a women?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gonna answer all of these together.
First anon-yeah, idk dude like just create a human being and make them a woman. I’m not a writer tbh so I can’t say much more than that—but that seems pretty simple enough. I’m gandering that he just has no interest in incorporating female characters into his story unless it’s to draw them super sexualized in a very detailed way—because he sure as hell puts a lot of detail into it when he does this 🙄🙄🙄 I haven’t really made much commentary on this issue of his because it’s just...A Thing™️ that happens in manga and it is definitely NOT okay, and if we all really wanted go into it-our conversation could last for days about women in general being over sexualized in manga, and also just not being written into the story properly or utilized as an actual character—BNHA is absolutely not the only manga with this issue. I’m not excusing Horikoshi by any means but I’m just almost desensitized to it at this point. Isn’t that sad? Anyway.
So FMA is written by Hiromu Arakawa. Surprise surprise—FMA is one of the greatest stories of all time—in art, story telling, characters, and most importantly (to me) the ending is fuckin STELLAR. I say it a lot—top tier ending. I really hope we get one like that for BNHA.
In that particular post I mentioned my two fav manga of all time but I’ll list a couple more because they’re also written by women—but they’re Shojo so they may not be up you guys’ alley.
Fullmetal Alchemist is my top favorite manga of all time. I read that story in middle school—I didn’t leave my couch for three days and I was up all hours of the night because I couldn’t put my laptop down. And the anime FMAB is amazing also. At least once a year I get in a mood where I need familiarity and I just rewatch FMAB from beginning to end and I fall into the rabbit hole again for several months lol. It just has a very special place in my heart and it will never be replaced. This last panel reduced my 12 year old little to tears.
Tumblr media
My second favorite of all time may end up getting replaced by BNHA depending on how it ends—but as of right now it’s still D. Gray-Man. D. Gray-Man is written by Katsura Hoshino (who I recently found out has the same birthday as me 🤭)
D. Gray-Man is still ongoing and it’s coming out on a quarterly basis due to the mangaka’s carpal tunnel. I started this one in high school it was my hyperfixation pretty much all throughout—but due to her health the chapters started slowing down and then eventually went on a very long hiatus. But now they’re coming out regularly—just sparingly. But D. Gray-Man is a very VERY good story—like breathtakingly so. It’s been ongoing since 2004. Almost 20 years and I’m still following it—and I’m gonna see it through til the end even though I’ll probably be like 30 lol. Possibly older. I recommend it but just know the chapters are currently coming out slowly. But Hoshino’s are is just—
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her artistic talent is unreal. Her coloring style HEAVILY influenced mine. The coloring style is very present in my current drawings. And Arakawa’s drawing style influenced mine as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have a very very deep love for both of these stories. You have no idea.
Ahhh two more manga that were written by women but also are shojo so it’s not quite the same:
Fruits Basket and Ouran High School Host Club
Fruits Basket is good—I’d recommend it highly. They also are about to finish the anime remake that I’ve been wanting for over a decade. Written by Natsuki Takaya
OHSHC is definitely not for everybody. It’s very slice of life kind of? It’s a love story. The most interesting part about it are the two main characters—the love interests. Everything else about it is just fun light hearted stuff—no high stakes or anything. There is a climactic moment but it’s not life or death or anything lol. I recommend this if you’re just bored and need a fun read. I re-read it like once a year also because sometimes I just want a good love story—and this one is it. So is Fruits Basket. OHSHC is written by Bisco Hatori.
Also—thank you for reminding me that I need to get into black butler. I watched it but I always prefer the manga so I need to get into that one. Also another story by Hiromu Arakawa is Silver Spoon. I watched the anime and it was good so I’m gonna read it to get the full story. It’s not high stakes either so it’s more of a breather story but it was still enough for me to binge watch the anime. So yeah—those are my two favs of all time—written by ladies. Thanks for letting me ramble about my favorite things guys!

regarding ur " plot points I love 2see explained in future eps". Only 1 or 2 of them will possibly be explained in the future. could be deleted. But the rest won't. Their chapters have been cut for good. Just go to the manga for them. The Mangaka is involved so the cuts got her blessing. As well as the anime original scenes. Don't let manga readers ruin it for U & make U notice stuff U shouldn't. Also, don't overanalyze the characters. Tohru is just a shojo MC. She doesn't need to be complex.
Hi.
Ouch! so out of 11 points I listed “ Only 1 or 2 of them will possibly be explained in the future.” & “ Their chapters have been cut for good. ”. This hurts dude...
Not a single manga reader ruined anything for me. Kindly give them respect. I’ve been writing furuba reviews since se01 & no one has ever spoiled anything for me or ruined my experience. Mad respect for every furuba manga reader. Even if they disliked sth, they’ll only state their opinion if I asked & they’re still careful. You never see this in any fandom!!
What I’ve criticized in any of my posts are things I’ve noticed myself by myself. I’m an avid supporter for well-written stories in media. I crave them & love to analyze, criticize & consume them with passion! You don’t see me analyze “ Friends” or “ School Rumble”. I understand what their genres dictates & I enjoy them greatly. There are other works on the other hand that goes beyond a single genre & excel in presenting sth different, new & fascinating.
Fruits basket had the potential for that for its depiction of trauma, abuse & its unique writing of one of the best romantic slow burn without the cliche of “love heals magically”. You rarely see such things in anime & especially in shojo. Such genre mostly goes for commercializing cute lovey dovey couples with lots of shy shy, blush blush, a dash of drama & a hint of complexity & lots of comedy & pretty boys & girls. Nothing against all that & I watch them & enjoy them but I never needed to look deeper.
Fruits basket had the potential to be popular for its own deep story & complex characters, not the animal-turning cuties when hugged. I’d even say the Fruits basket had the potential to be as deep as other works from different genres: Monster, death note, AOT & FMA..etc. Finally a shojo classified work standing with highly acclaimed & extremely analyzed works of anime. Why? becuz furuba discuss human trauma & abuse rather than mystery or politics. It goes deeper into the faulty human mind & exhausted soul. So, how can I not analyze this ????
Fruits basket anime is a different medium from the manga. I never expected faithful adaptation cuz I don’t even know the manga. I also don’t care if the mangaka approved the cuts or the added scenes. If sth doesn’t make sense or is weakly presented or doesn't add up, I’ll criticize it. Even if I it was in the manga itself. Also knowing the mangaka sees no problems with the pacing & tohru’s development reflect badly on her imo! But I won’t take you words for it cuz I don’t know if what you said abt her is true or not. She might just be a general supervisor not involved in details or maybe intentionally requested deleted content to promote the manga, I duno & I don’t care. If the result is shallow, I’ll say it. If it is good, I’ll praise it.
Finally, If sth isn’t important at all, then it wouldn’t be noticed if cut, right? How come I have many questions abt sth that is cut & I didn’t even know it was cut? As I said before, se03 has the best stories & the bulk of what furuba truly is. To me, Furuba is not the shallow lesson of the day in se01 nor the scratching the surface of the issues in se02. It is the deep abyss of se03. It is guilt, grief, death, suicide, forgiveness, hope & new beginnings.
Also, tohru is NOT  just shojo MC. -_-’. Duno abt the manga, but altho in the anime, she’s 45% a mother to yuki, 45% fixer of the sohmas’s issues, 10% real deep character with her own issues, trauma, fears, complicated love interest & hope. This 10% is what I like & want. What I find hella unique & fascinating. What I’ll analyze & discuss & talk abt. I know I complain that her issues are inconsistent, weakly presented more than any character in furuba but it is what I have & why I started watching furuba in the 1st place hoping for! You seem to be a manga-reader & your opinion of her is yours & you’re free on how you see her. Personally, I see lots of lost potential in tohru herself & for the story itself overall. But the show is still going. Things might get better! =D
Thanks for the ask, but I’m still in furuba anime land till the ride ends! Then, we’ll see if it was worth it<3333

i wouldn't necessarily wish this on anyone, but have you considered/attempted to get into the naruto fandom? only curious bc i initially followed for braime and bellarke, but the anime content has been a nice addition 👀
i haven't seen naruto, i've been kind of avoiding anime with huge followings because i try to stay out of big fandoms nowadays. i've mostly been enjoying anime that i can finish in a few days/weeks and which don't have huge time commitments. i think fruits basket is the longest anime i've watched (3 whole seasons!). also, i've been sticking to the realm of shojo, because i'm a sucker for romance, which is something you just don't really get anymore in american media, and if you do, it's either temporary or unearned. with the exception of ohshc and beastars everything i've watched has been HEA which is very refreshing
if i do cross into shonen, i'll probably do fullmetal alchemist + brotherhood first, and then maybe naruto!

Here’s a list of resources you can use to learn more about Japanese Queer history, literature, BL, Gei Komi, Fujoshi, Fudanshi etc.
fujoshi.info
----
Edit: It’s honestly depressing that anyone I’ve seen so far who disliked this post and commented on it either went off on completely unrelated tangents, or assumed that I'm either white (I’m not) and/or not gay/queer as an excuse to talk over me. It’s extremely ironic claiming to be open-minded/progressive while removing any association of queerness from people who discuss BL/Fujoshi history as an excuse to talk over them. “You’re gonna say your as oppressed as gay people???” hello, I am a gay POC.
People who perpetuated the Anti Fujoshi narrative were terfs and you’re actually being transphobic by spreading their narratives. They call trans MLM fujoshi because they hate trans men and see them as “fetishistic” women. They don’t see trans men as men, they see them as women.
Just like how people who hate trans women call them “fetishizers” since the 1970s in western anti-trans circles. That’s it. That’s where it comes from.
These same people even censor Queer which was also perpetuated by TERFs as a means of excluding trans/nonbinary/intersex identities.
Either read the masterposts in the links or leave, but stop getting into fights with your own strawmen on my posts.
//
Sidenote, I find it interesting (and by interesting I mean disgusting & disappointing) how the term ‘Fujoshi’ has come full circle in western culture to mean: ‘rotten women, degenerates, women who ruin everything, women who are ruined/deviant/corrupted, Abusers etc. etc.’ When it originated as an overall general term for women who didn’t conform to conventional gender & heterosexual roles & standards in Japan. That was it. That’s all it meant.
They were literally considered “ruined women” not fit for marriage or regular society. It was deeply misogynistic & homophobic in root. Female fans were referred to as Fujoshi whether they were “exploitative” of M/M relationships or not. Simply appreciating or engaging in queer relationships to any degree was seen as “rotten” and deemed someone a Fujoshi. The term is NOT exclusive to people who are seen as fetishizing said content/relationships. It’s a reclaimed term still actively used to this day in Japan.
Western fandom has taken this reclaimed word that comes from Japanese context & culture, and weaponized it all over again. To the point where people don’t even remotely know what it means in historical terms and throw it around with smug abandon. To the point where if they saw a Japanese person use it, would likely unleash a full-scale hate campaign against them. I don’t know if some newer western self identified Fujoshi are somehow using the term wrong as well but I’m talking about the actual REAL original meaning & context that has only become present day warped in western fandom, and is used to attack women & lgbt+ ppl who dare mention the term. (Or label them as such to deem certain ppl as fandom undesirables.) It’s embarrassing.
I’ve literally seen people say ‘time to reclaim X series from the Fujoshis! :^)’ When the original author of said work they’re celebrating... Would be considered a Fujoshi...
Fujoshi isn’t synonymous with ‘exploitative nasty straight women’.
Many of these women were & are queer themselves and “BL”, Yaoi & Yuri works are all a means to explore gender identity, sexuality, empowerment, etc.  Lots of iconic shojo series overlap with themes present in a lot of these works too. It’s not a coincidence (Utena, Sailor Moon, Fruits Basket, etc.)
Many people I know personally who also grew up with BL works, including myself later discovered “Oh I’m bi, I’m genderfluid, I’m nonbinary, I’m trans, etc.” The past few decades BL has still been ‘taboo’ for having queer relationships, but at least in western culture it was a “safe” way to engage in these stories when LGBTQ+ media was actively shut out from main stream media. People didn’t pay attention to manga or comics, so buying them, borrowing them, reading them could be done almost in plain sight. While most of us didn’t identify/call ourselves Fujoshi we’d still be considered Fujoshi, make sense?
I implore you all to at least do some research and read academic articles BY Japanese women & other older fans about these topics before subscribing to the misinformed hate-wagon and bastardizing a non-western term beyond recognition.
I also find it worth mentioning that Fujoshi & Fudanshi both refer to women & men respectively who are “corrupt/rotten/disposable” for enjoying M/M relationships in any fashion. Sexualizing men is seen as inherently negative.
(This is a side topic but there is even a whole paper (I dont think it’s been published yet? I know this because I attended a conference where she presented last month) done by Kazumi Nagaike who found that there are self identified Fudanshi men who identify as straight & read BL manga because its the only media in which they can experience a male character receiving romantic affection, attention and being comforted and cared for lovingly) They actively hide it though because it would be seen as shameful. Fujoshi & Fudanshi culture isn’t as shallow & degenerate as these westerners make them seem.)
But, there is no mainstream term (if any) for individuals who write about/enjoy or sexualize F/F relationships, and if there IS a term I’ve never seen anyone use it or make a big fuss over it to remotely the same degree. No “lets reclaim these yuri/lesbian characters from those nasty men >:)” large scale campaigns. It’s always women & queer fans that get thrown under the bus.
Here’s a great master post with numerous sources and further in depth explanations I would just end up copypasting so here’s the link instead

hey! can I get a bnha & fruits basket romantic matchup? my pronouns are she/her and i’m straight. my personality type is infj. at first I come across as the shy and reserved type but once i’m comfortable around someone i’m very lively, playful, and talkative. however there are times where my social battery runs out and I can get quiet or soft spoken. i’m also pretty observant and sensitive. some of my hobbies include dancing for sure, listening to music, baking, and ice skating. some things I like are kpop, shojo manga, sweet and warm foods, rain/storms, and dancing. my love language is any sort of physical touch ranging from hand holding to cuddles. tysm <3
Never gotten a Fruits Basket request before. Lowkey retained no memory of that after I watched it. Hopefully this ended up okay! 👀
I match you with,,,
Tumblr media
Denki Kaminari!
First thing’s first, he is the biggest romantic
He’s not just a flirt, or whatever, he genuinely just has an interest in romantic endeavors. Be prepared
Banking off of that, I feel he also enjoys shojo from time to time, though he would absolutely never tell anyone
If you talk to him about it first, he might cave, though. He figures theres no point when you could be sharing recommendations
Big hugger! Super cuddly! Will be all over you if you let him!
He’s a very casually touchy person, always having an arm around you, or his head in your lap
He will also always be the one to initiate cuddles
Really vibes with your outgoing side, but understands you aren’t always like that
He doesn’t mind taking social breaks, especially since he tends to forget to take them, himself!
Having alone time does mean more cuddles, after all
Will totally bake with you! Just don’t expect it to come out too perfect
He is the type to not diliberately mess things up, but he jokes around so much, its inevidable
He really is super sweet, though
Sometimes a bit of a dumbass, but super duper sweet!
In conclusion: Yellow coded character x purple coded chracter who?
Tumblr media
Kyo Sohma!
Starts talking to you under the idea that you’ll be just as soft spoken as when you met, but welcomes your liveliness after getting to know you more!
He enjoys how talkative you can be, the things you say are interesting, but only really because said things come from you
Your playful energy is surpisingly endearing to him, and is one of the reasons he likes you
He can be a bit indifferent to touch, but it’s not like he’s going to deny you
If its raining or cold, he’ll be more accepting to cuddles. He’s more than willing to curl up next to a window and watch the rain fall
He honestly listens to the same albums over and over, so your music taste is a blessing
Any artist or album suggestions you could give him, he will immedietly take it
It doesnt help that he knows its something you like
Loves watching you dance! Literally is so entranced with it!
He’d never admit that, of course, but he truly adores it!
Has a habit of teasing you about having to be alone at times, but its all lighthearted
He honestly gets it, though, so he won’t ever bother you about it beyond his little jabs
He will also get genuinely angry with anyone who actually makes fun of you for it, though
In conclusion: My man didnt even realize he liked you until it was too late. Now he cant get rid of ya. /pos

🔥 + fruits basket :V
I really have been enjoying this franchise A LOT, minus Natsuki Takaya's unfortunate kink for pairing teenaged girls with adult men (which seriously undermines the series themes of developing psychological health, 'cuz like... there is no way a middle school girl getting married to her teacher is going to be healthy.)
(Also some of the weird gender shit and slapstick stuff that hasn't aged well...)
But like. Overall I think it's a really well done character drama that explores the thoughts and feelings of its cast members in a way I find fascinating to watch. All of the characters are interesting in their own right and the way they develop personally and the way the relationships grow and change is very satisfying to watch.
It very much scratches an itch I have for character drama ensembles that I have trouble finding. I love stories which stop and ruminate on the internal worlds of their characters, and I love that it has a recurring theme of "everyone has their own shit going on."
I'm kind of sad though that because it's a series primarily about trauma and recovering from abuse, it's... kind of hard to show it to my friends, on top of the 90s Anime Bullshit. Like I don't want to blindside people but also if I list out every single bad thing that is referred to or shown, it probably just sounds like an endless misery parade, and I like it enough that it makes me sad to think of trying to show it to someone and getting a like. Slow backing-away in response.
Especially since this show is definitely influencing my own writing and helping me clarify how/what I want to write, so there's this fear that what I write isn't going to be acceptable to other people. Like you can only allude to trauma, and if you want to sit with it or really talk about it in a story then it's too unpleasant to look at.
Also on a side note I wish the manga fans would stop going into the tags constantly to talk about how angry and disappointed they are that the pacing in the final season has been changed from the manga. It's annoying and is making it harder for me to judge the third season on its own, which is what I wanted to do before I started reading the manga.
On a similar fandom salt note, anti-Shigure people. Yes, Akigure is weird and problematic and arguably a case of grooming. This was probably not intentional on the author's part and a side effect of how shojo, especially at the time, has this romanticized idea of Older Men, and yes, that's unfortunate.
No, we don't need to constantly bring it up. Shigure is a fictional character. He is not going to prey on the readers and the cops are not going to come and arrest him if you bring enough attention to the issue. The narrative is written and done, and the criticism has likewise been written and done. Dwelling on it at this point is just you trying to pick fights.
Add his name to your blacklist and block his fans if you really can't stand the idea that people feel differently about him than you. You don't get to dictate other people's feelings.

Anime For Beginners: Best Genres and Series to Watch
https://ift.tt/2N0s0pf
The past decade has seen anime’s popularity increase in dramatic ways, whether through a much broader spectrum of series receiving dubs, the growing success of anime feature films in theaters, or the sudden prominence of streaming services. There’s never been a better time to be an anime fan and the medium has become more accessible than ever. There’s a lot of anime out there, but the wealth of new series can often blend together or not be given a fair chance. Additionally, there are definitely certain types of anime that are more prominently showcased outside of Japan.

Upcoming Anime 2021: New and Returning Series to Watch
By Daniel Kurland
For the uninitiated it’s easy to assume that anime consists of giant robots, monsters that battle, and strong fighters and magical girls that transform, but that’s really just a fraction of what the medium has to offer. Words like shonen, shojo, isekai, and even reverse harem are used in reference to anime, which can sometimes feel overwhelming when someone just wants to watch a silly romantic comedy or superhero clone. Here’s a helpful breakdown of all of the major anime genres and where to get started with them all.
Shonen
The shonen genre is by far the most popular brand of anime and the majority of breakout hits and major successes like Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, and One Piece all fit into the shonen brand. What’s interesting about anime genres is that they’re treated more like demographics and shonen is content that caters to boys with a young male protagonist. Shonen is so accessible because beyond this basic disclaimer, it’s able to cover a wide berth of content and a show like My Hero Academia can be completely different from Yu Yu Hakusho, yet they can still fall back on the same values.
Shonen anime has largely been generalized to be series that feature lots of fighting and battles, which isn’t always the case, but has become quite representative of the genre. Shonen series are ideal for people that want lots of action and are hungry for a show that has hundreds of episodes to consume.
Notable Series To Watch: Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Attack On Titan
Shojo
Shojo is the female counterpart to the shonen genre that caters towards an audience of girls rather than boys. The shojo genre isn’t entirely bereft of battles, but it’s a style of anime where relationships and emotional drama is the priority or the source of power. There are many eclectic kinds of shojo series that are content to explore awkward relationship drama where there’s typically some kind of atypical supernatural element afoot.

However, the most popular style of shojo that’s largely become emblematic of the genre are “magical girl” series where regular girls transform into powerful warriors. There’s also typically a bright and pastoral aesthetic to shojo series and characters, both female and male, are beautified. Shojo anime is absolutely the place where the power of love will triumph over evil.
Notable Series To Watch: Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Fruits Basket, Vampire Knight, My Love Story!!
Seinen
Seinen is the R-rated evolution of the shonen genre that’s geared towards a more adult male audience that can handle mature storytelling. That’s not to say that shonen series can’t be violent or deal with adult situations, but seinen series often center around antiheroes and adult characters who are disenfranchised as opposed to optimistic youth that want to save the future.
Some of the most sophisticated and challenging anime series come out of the seinen genre and it’s a great place for people to jump in that are looking for a story that’s not overly drawn out and achieves the same dramatic peaks as prestige television. Seinen once more comes down to the viewers’ preferences and there are science fiction, horror, and fantasy seinen shows that all deconstruct their material in different ways. As a point of comparison, major anime movies like Akira or Ghost in the Shell both fit into the seinen genre.
Notable Series To Watch: Kill La Kill, Berserk, Ping Pong The Animation, Vinland Saga, Dorohedoro
Josei
Josei is the more mature version of shojo content and it’s full of series that are designed for women as opposed to girls. Romance is a big component of josei series, but it’s more concerned about the harsh realities behind relationships than the flirtatious courtship that kicks things off. Josei love stories are messy and full of heartbreak and they’re less romanticized than shojo’s interpretation of love.
A trashy way of putting it would be to say that Twilight is shojo, but Fifty Shades of Grey is seinen. Matters of the heart don’t always have to fuel josei series and there are also plenty of shows that center around adult women as they negotiate through professional and creative endeavors. It’s a place to find less flowery female-driven stories.
Notable Series To Watch: Chihayafuru, The Gokusen, Honey And Clover, Nana, Princess Jellyfish
Isekai
The isekai genre is perfect for fans of fantasy and this style of anime has become wildly popular over the course of the past decade. Isekai anime is any show where a character gets transported away to a fantastical new world. It’s a classic storytelling idea, but anime has been able to run with it in some creative new ways. There’s an abundance of isekai series that incorporate video game aesthetics and there are now just as many series where characters are trapped in a video game world than some alternate fantasy dimension.
Isekai can focus on the protagonist’s mission to return home, act as a savior in their new world, or simply kill time and enjoy the vacation. There are even reverse isekai anime where a supernatural character gets stuck on Earth and must acclimate. Arguably the biggest most mainstream example of isekai content is Spirited Away, but even something as foundational as Alice in Wonderland would qualify.
Notable Series To Watch: Overlord, Re: Zero – Starting Life In Another World, That Time I Got Reincarnated Into A Slime, KonoSuba, No Game No Life
Ecchi
Ecchi is that brand of anime that’s generalized to be the oversexed content that’s likely to make someone blush if they were watching it in public. Ecchi is any sort of anime series that prioritizes a certain sexiness and isn’t afraid to showcase its assets and indulge in “fan service.” Ecchi anime usually has a lot of skin on display, but it’s far from empty content and there’s an important distinction between something like this and actual pornography.

Ecchi series titillate, but they still are concerned about their story and characters. There’s inevitably going to be some overlap between ecchi and seinen content (Kill La Kill is a series that really tows the line between both), but there’s often more of a gratuitous playfulness that drives ecchi content. Sexualized characters may bring in the audience, but the series are still deep enough to maintain their interests.
Notable Series To Watch: High School DxD, High School Of The Dead, Rosario To Vampire, Strike The Blood, Prison School
Mecha
Mecha anime are widely prominent and the visual of gigantic robots locked in combat as they fly through outer space feels like a tentpole of the anime industry. There’s a large awareness towards mecha series and it’s even entered mainstream live-action content through works like Pacific Rim. However, this visibility also makes mecha content easy to generalize and some may write it off without understanding the versatility of the genre. Mecha anime can be broken down further into real robot and super robot series, each of which apply a different level of realism to these unrealistic creations.
Real robot series might focus more on the humans that pilot the machines and the politics that surround mecha, whereas super robot content can feature robots that destroy planets with giant lasers. There can be a lot of gratuitous action in mecha series, but the human element in shows like Appleseed and Neon Genesis Evangelion, or how various Mobile Suit Gundam properties are dedicated to the casualties of war, is proof that mecha anime can be a lot more than just giant robot battles.
Notable Series To Watch: Mobile Suit Gundam, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Appleseed, Mobile Police Patlabor, Neon Genesis Evangelion
Harem
Romance is popular in any medium and there’s often exceptional tension that’s created from out of a love triangle. One genre of anime takes that idea and seriously exaggerates it in a way that can sometimes be problematic, but has spawned a popular style of anime all the same. Harem series center around a hapless male protagonist who stumbles into some incredible situation where a large group of girls–all of contrasting personalities–fall head-over-heels in love with him.
Harem anime can come across as baseless wish fulfillment fantasy, but the broad structure allows many other genres to mix together with it in a productive way. A lot of the time these series will center on the actual characters and the complex relationship dynamics involved and try to say something that may not be explored in a josei or ecchi series. There are also reverse harem series, which take the same idea, but flip the genders where multiple men fawn over a woman.
Notable Series To Watch: Tenchi Muyo!, The World Only God Knows, Nisekoi, To LOVE-Ru, Ouran High School Host Club
Gag
Anime series are able to achieve a lot of things that just can’t be accomplished in other forms of animation or programming. Comedy is something that’s able to connect extremely hard in anime and operate at an absurdist level that uses visuals, timing, and premises that are rare to find elsewhere. Many anime series have a sense of humor or are even specifically designed as comedies, but gag anime are a different breed that operate at an overwhelmingly relentless pace.
Reality and the fourth wall are just things to break in gag series, which often engage in wild parodies and lampshade anime as a whole. Some gag anime have extended storylines, but they often operate in shorter vignette style sequences that allow the comedy to really pop. Gag anime thrive in pop culture references and some of the hardest times I’ve laughed in my entire life have been at gag series like Mr. Osomatsu and Gintama where comedy is king.
Notable Series To Watch: Gintama, The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K, Pop Team Epic!, Mr. Osomatsu, Excel Saga
Slice Of Life
Slice of life anime are those endlessly soothing series that don’t try to create major spectacles where the planet is at risk, but instead celebrate the mundanity of life. Slice of life series may center around the staff at a job, a group of friends in a high school club, or just a loner that’s moved to a new community. These are series that elegantly display the tiny moments that make life important and the bonds that create eternal friendships.
The stakes are often more muted in slice of life anime, but that doesn’t mean that they’re without tension or can’t dabble in fantastical material. There are still slice of life anime series that involve magical creatures or are set in unbelievable worlds. It’s sometimes even more humbling to learn that some planet in a far away solar system has a struggling chess club or that a dinosaur can be obsessed with different brands of candy.
Notable Series To Watch: The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya, Toradora!, K-On!, Dagashi Kashi, Clannad
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });

About that other anon ask about the parents. I think it's okay if you like a character and you also like their parents or if you don't. In my case I love Suwon the most but his parents turned out to be disappointment but that only makes me love SW even more cause he turned out to be way better than both his parents.
In my case, ...I love dark characters...One of my first favorite characters was Naraku (I think his name means hell in japanese?) of Inuyasha! Or Sesshomaru, who also makes an appearance killing a whole bunch of human beings!
If they have a conflictive wish like Naraku who killed the woman he considered to love...what drama! Great!
In Sesshomaru´s case he had to come to term that he liked a human being and justified the negative feelings he had for inuyasha with him “being a half-demon”!
Akito of Fruits Basket, who had to live like a man because of her mother...who was a victim and an offender...She was caged in the world that was created for her and expressed her fear through rage and violence...She even hurt the person, she loved and that person was not so good to forgive her so easily...Truly amazing!
I considered it interesting that Yon hi was not able to tell Yu hon but rather chose to internalize the guilt, when she realized that she may have been the cause. (She chose the option with whom she could live with...She loved him too and realized how much he loved her...Just like the people of Kouka chose the option that was best for their conscience!
Yu hon is like Soo Won considered to be a true hero and protector for his subordinates. It is an illusion...I guess the reason, why he vanished from the palace was because he enjoyed to be free sometimes. Yu hon must have felt the need for a companion...for a person that did not idolize him and expect the world from him...
He was raised since he was apparently two years old to be a warrior and was able to perform well. However he was  so clearly unable to express his love for his brother in a way that Il could understand.
Yu hon drove the “protection” of his country pretty far...however...war was and is cruel...even if you should “only” kill soldiers. Of course that creates hate and misery as well...just not for the people he protected! This half-baked justification...that hypocrisy of the people! And the self-deception of Yon hi...
The whole topic is so interesting! The manga may dive into topics that usually aren´t present in a shojo manga.
