"A company in France has developed genetically-enhanced houseplants that remove 30 times more indoor air pollutants than your normal ficus.

Paint, treated wood, household cleaners, insulation, unseen mold—there is a shopping list of things that can fill the air you breathe in your home with VOCs or volatile organic compounds. These include formaldehyde and other airborne substances that can cause inflammation and irritation in the body.

The best way to tackle this little-discussed private health problem is by keeping good outdoor airflow into your living spaces, but in the dog days of summer or the depths of a Maine winter, that might not be possible.

Houseplants can remove these pollutants from the air, and so the company Neoplants decided to make simple alterations to these species’ genetic makeup to supercharge this cleaning ability.

In particular, houseplants’ natural ability to absorb pollutants like formaldehyde relies on them storing them as toxins to be excreted later.

French scientists and Neoplants’ co-founders Lionel Mora and Patrick Torbey engineered a houseplant to convert them instead to plant matter. They also took aim at the natural microbiome of houseplants to enhance their ability to absorb and process VOCs as well.

The company’s first offering—the Neo P1—is a Devil’s ivy plant that sits on a custom-designed tall stand that both maximizes its air-cleaning properties and allows it to be watered far less often.

Initial testing, conducted by the Ecole Mines-Telecom of Lille University, shows that if you do choose to shell out the $179 for the Neo P1, it’s as if you were buying 30 houseplants. Of course, if you went for the budget route of 30 houseplants, you’d have to water them all.

The founders pointed out in an interview done with Forbes last year that once they settled on the species and fixed the winning genetic phenotype, the next part of the process was just raising plants, the same activity done in every nursery and florist in every town in Europe."

Deliveries for the P1 are estimated for August 2024.

Woofing dans la ferme florale Champêtre (fleur de saison en culture biologique) , à la Grande Paroisse (77). Isabelle m'a accueillie ainsi qu'une stagiaire afin de l'aider dans ses missions quotidiennes. Au programme cueillette (statice, immortelles, monardes, lagurus etc.), nettoyage des cosmos, désherbage, éclaircissement des planches de culture (scabieuses , mufliers etc.), pincement des tiges de dahlias, zinnias etc. On a aussi fait quelques semis de cosmos pour le début d'automne, il y aura aussi un depart de semis de celosie. On a libéré quelques planches (Ammi majus et pieds d'alouette) sur lesquelles on pourra installer les nouveaux semis.

A l'atelier on met certaines recoltes à sécher : lin, statice, scabieuses, sorgho, immortelles (Xeranthemum annuum et Xerochrysum bracteatum), ammi majus. On libère de l'espace en stockant les récoltes précédentes deja sèches (nigelle, carthamus).

Ce vendredi après une semaine bien remplie on a pu faire de beaux bouquets avec les premiers dahlias qu'on ne destinait pas a la vente. Voila le resultat !

you had many customers that you saw at least once a week, knowing which ones they picked out at the back of your mind.

you were just about finished with an arrangement of daisies and baby breaths when the sound of the white french doors opening, caught your attention.

you looked up to see a redhaired woman that you had never seen in your flower-shop. you brightened, hoping to make a new friend.

she looked around quietly, only the sound of your music playing softly, when she halted in front of some specific flowers to the left of the cashier.

“those are my favorites, very pretty ones” you said as she looked as if she were deciding whether to get them

“what are they called?” she said with a hoarse voice, almost ever so quietly,

“aster amellus… you looking for anything in particular?” your eyebrows raised curiously when you finally met her green eyes.

“oh, no. i-um- i don’t know much about flowers” half lie, she knew of the venomous ones.

“well i’d be happy to entertain any questions if you’d like” you tilted your head a little as she turned back to the purple flowers she was looking at earlier.

truth be told, natasha just saw you from outside and decided she would have made a big mistake if she just walked right past your shop.

“would you mind helping me pick for the dining or living room” she looked back at you

“hmm.. i’ve got a lot of ideas in mind” you giggled resting your elbow on the marble counter and your head on your hand, thinking about it.

“surprise me” she said with a small smile

“would you like a variation or only one kind?” you stood up from your stool and only then did the redhead take in your full figure.

only a few inches shorter than her, you wore a navy blue and white maxi dress with ribbons as the strap. hair tied up in a half pony tail.

you wandered around the shop, picking some quite loud flowers and some quiet ones in contrast.

natasha couldn’t tear her eyes away from you. you radiated such softness she had never felt.

she on the other hand, wore a sweater steve had knitted with some black pants.

“i take probably 5 minutes or so to arrange these, would you mind waiting ?” you made your way in front of her.

“i don’t mind at all” she said staring as you smiled “alright” you grabbed a stool for her and set it in front of your counter and cashier spot.

“so what’s your name, if you don’t mind?” she paused for a moment.

“natasha”

“natasha” you repeated. her name rolled off your tongue so smoothly she took her seat, fiddling with her fingers. “that’s a lovely name”

“thank you, what about you?” she eyed your top for a nametag. “no name tag” she smirked

“i find it better to see who cares enough to ask” you laughed, cutting some stems off. “it’s y/n”

“nice to meet you” natasha reached her hand out impulsively. she was screaming a handful of swear words in her head. ‘this is so stupid’ ‘a handshake? - really natasha?!’

you looked at her hand and smiled widely “i love a good handshake” you took her hand and shook it before going back to what you were doing.

“since this is for your dining room or living room, would you want a vase? instead of me wrapping this in paper”

“whatever it needs” natasha laughed “sure” a smile crept onto your face as you arranged the flowers in a clear vase.

“voilà!” you turned it to her and though she didn’t know any of the names of the flowers in this areangement, she found it as stunning as the one who made it.

“it’s great, thanks y/n. i’ll pay in cash” you put the vase with flowers in a bag so it wouldn’t be so hard to carry.

”the vase is on the house” you sent her a playful wink which left her mind spiraling.

“you didn’t have to, but i appreciate it” natasha took bag and smiled at you.

“well i hope you enjoy the flowers and come back, natasha” “oh i will, sweetheart” her confidence came back as she inched away from you, earning you to shake your head with laughter.

the next time you saw natasha was a week after she last came. this time, she entered with a frown, holding an empty vase.

you waved goodbye to a customer and greeted her with a smile.

“you need to tell me how you keep them alive” she set the vase down and slumped against the counter.

“oh no natasha, what happened” you stifled a laugh, amused by this.

“well i forgot to ask what i needed to do so i just left it there and by the time i realized i needed to take care of it, it was too late”

“you left it alone for one week” you raised a brow

“maybe” she murmured looking behind you

“would you like a new set of flowers?” you asked “please” “the same kind?”

“surprise me”

it went the same as last time, except she stayed to talk more even after you finished.

“do you mind if we exchanged numbers? y’know.. so i can call you for help or text?”

‘wow natasha, smooth’ she thought

“sure! here you go” you handed her your phone and she did the same.

“i have to go, but thank you for this” she raised the vase with flowers

“my pleasure! i hope you enjoy, dont kill the flowers, and come back again soon natasha” you waved and she did the same

after chatting almost every day about random things, natasha came back 2 more times before she came again, without the vase.

“oh don’t tell me you broke the vase” you said cocking you head with your hand on your hip

“ha ha, very funny y/l/n” “so what’s the flowers for today?”

“i want aster amellus and whatever you think someone would like to receive”

“natasha dating someone??? wooo” you giggled

“yeah-yeah im not so sure” natasha shook her head, sitting on the stool you always have out for her.

“well now i have to make this extra for whoever they are! but come on, any person would be lucky to go out with you” natasha laughed “what about you? any plans for tonight?” natasha asked you

“unfortunately not, probably watching a shitty movie or somethin” natasha hummed

“vase or paper?” “paper” natasha leaned forward in the counter, overlooking all the wrapping. “payment” natasha slid the bill forward and you thanked her

“here you go” you handed it to her and she smiled

“y/n?” “hm?” “for you.. if you wanna have dinner and watch a shitty movie together tonight”

you stopped breathing for a moment

“...me?” you asked baffled “who else?” natasha smiled coyly “no offense but.. you can do way much better” you accepted the flowers from her

“is this you rejecting me?” she raised a brow “no! just- thank you” “you’re thanking me for asking you out?” “kinda” “you’re silly, petal” “petal, i like that” you smiled “pick you up by 8:30! don’t be late”

You requested: Mistletoe + Secret Santa

Preface: You are married to Rook, and this happens in the future. You have 3 children (2 girls, 1 boy), and their appearances are not described, and they can either be biological or adopted. Gender-neutral reader as well. I used Google Translate, as I speak Spanish and not French.

Rook Hunt

The children were very excited to go to the market, and you could tell by the way the three of them took your hands and dragged you and your husband towards the bustling marketplace. For the holidays, instead of buying a bunch of presents, the children wanted to do a Secret Santa so that the gifts were personal and heartfelt.

Juliette (your oldest), Adeline (your middle), and Pierre (your youngest) all wrote things that they wanted, and depending on who they got, you would give them their recipient’s wishlist. Your husband and yourself did not put your names in, as you wanted to give them a chance to build a sibling bond.

“Come on! Or the presents will all be gone!” Juliette shouted. You laughed as you picked up Pierre, who was only a toddler. In turn, Rook tossed Adeline up and over his shoulder, making the little girl laugh as well

Once you arrived at the entrance, you had the girls go with Rook and you took Pierre with you. You then made a plan to meet up with one another back at the entrance in an hour, and your husband hoisted Juliette over his shoulder as well as he marched in the opposite direction you were going. You set your son down and let him take your hand to lead you wherever he wanted to go.

You were aware that he had gotten Juliette, and so you brought him to the toy vendors to see what horses they had to offer. Yeah, one thing about your daughter was that she was obsessed with horses. Adeline was interested in archery. Pierre loved stealing your phone and taking photos of pretty flowers that he found near your cottage.

The little boy was shouting in excitement as he found a tiny horse figurine. It came with a few different accessories, kind of like the Build-A-Bear’s back in your world. You let Pierre customize the horse as you paid for it, and the pure excitement on his face made your heart melt. You purchased a gift bag as well so as to not show his sisters the gift and reveal which name he chose.

On the other side, a man with his two young daughters was being dragged around to secretly buy a gift for his wife as well as their secret santa gifts. Juliette had pulled Adeline’s name, and Adeline had pulled Pierre’s name. Now, with Juliette, it was going to be a bit difficult because her younger sister was extremely smart and observant.

As they wandered about the different stands, Rook spotted something. It was mistletoe, fake, as real was poisonous when consumed, and you had young children around. The chances of your son putting it into his mouth were greater than desired, but that was the reality. Anyway, he stopped to purchase a sprig. The owner was a florist, and he spotted a bunch of red roses as well.

“Souhaitez-vous acheter une rose pour votre [Parent Title]?” He asked his children. (Would you like to purchase a rose for your [Parent Title]?) The two little girls nodded and he handed them three roses. Then, he kept the sprig of mistletoe for himself as well as another rose.

“Papa, didn’t you give [Parent Title] a rose when you first confessed to them?” Adeline asked.

“Yes, I did, mon doux ange, but their radiance could put even the most beautiful rose to shame.”

An hour later, you all regrouped, and your daughters acted as though you hadn’t seen them for years. You showered them both in kisses and hugged them, asking them how their shopping went, before you went to kiss your husband. Your children were very used to your public displays of affection, and instead of getting ewwwww’s, you got acceptance.

Heading towards your cottage, Rook had Pierre on his shoulders, the little boy laughing as you held the hands of your little girls, who were singing a French song that their father had taught them when they were just babies. Your son was butchering many of the words, but he had the melody right if that counted for something.

Opening the front door, the girls ran in and immediately started shouting for you to sit down so you could receive your presents. You were confused at what they were saying, but you turned to see your husband smiling with that smile that managed to get you to both date, marry, and start a family with him.

You sat on the couch, and Rook placed your little boy on your lap as he, Juliette, Adeline, and Pierre held 4 roses out for you. You gasped as you took each individual flower, gathering them in a bouquet and smelling them.

“Merci, mes amours!” You exclaimed, placing kisses on each child. Before you got to Rook, however, he handed you a box, and when you looked inside, you saw mistletoe. You felt pressure being taken off your lap and it was your big man taking your little man off and putting him on the couch as he extended an arm out to you to help you up.

Accepting his hand, you were hoisted up and nearly fell, only for you to be caught and dipped down. The air in your lungs was sucked out in the passionate kiss that your husband gave to you, and when you broke apart, one sentence was said to your children.

“Go to your rooms, children~”
