It's in the recs list! I'm very much looking forward to this one.

I've certainly enjoyed what I've read so far - it's been nice to get back to the story's original protagonists.

The main mood of Act 5.2 is one of anticipation. We've been getting glimpses of the kids' Grand Plan ever since the Act began, and it very much feels like it's all building up to something. If Homestuck sticks the landing, and the Act 5 finale lives up to all this hype, then this might end up my favorite part of the story so far.

Yeah it's a session tag - although a 'reading session' is a little ambiguously defined, especially when I stop posting for a few hours and return later in the day. How long a gap does it need to be before it qualifies as a new reading session?

I've just been tagging every post made in the same day as the same session. It's not a perfect solution, but it'll do.

Wow, it started in 2010? I could conceivably have been reading Paranatural in school - although I'm glad I came to it a little later, so I wasn't constantly waiting for updates.

Big red peepers. I'll admit I didn't really think of this as a reveal, but I suppose it is our first true peek behind Dave's shades.

Based on this, it's it's probably safe to assume that all the kids have eyes matching their text colors. Has Rose been blessed with the legendary mutation, Alexandria's Genesis?

I've really gotta catch up on those albums at some point...

I did wonder if Bro's sword shenanigans were something to do with Dave's Quest - like, maybe he was bequeathing his anime sword to his brother, to accomplish some objective. Now that Dave has his own Quest sword, I think that interpretation is less likely.

Symbolically though, I do think it's notable that Bro's sword is intact, and Dave's is broken. It ties into how Dave sees himself as a worse version of Bro, on some level.

As far as Jack is concerned, I doubt the game intends for him to have anything to do with Dave's journey. The whole point is that he's ignoring the game's rules - so if anything, his antics might start to break the Quests.

It sounds like the style was supposed to take readers aback - although I didn't find it particularly jarring myself!

Homestuck's art style is constantly changing, with this, the Earthbound sprites, and Hero Mode, among other things. Honestly, I had just assumed that the comic's art just fluctuated depending on Hussie's mood.

I quite like the HussNasty panels, and I hope Hussie keeps experimenting with the comic's art. It sounds like this is the beginning of a more general trend, so I'm hopeful that it will continue.

Oh, so it just straight up is Excalibur.

New theory about his Quest, then. It's about worthiness, and Dave is being tasked to 'prove himself' as a hero, despite his insecurities. This ties neatly into the next set of asks below:

Anonymous asked: my headcanon (partially supported by the text, as you've seen from rose's conversation with jaspers) is that each quest is designed to help you self-improve, so that you can responsibly preside over an entire universe. whether you agree with the game about the ways you need to improve is another story.

I've speculated that the Quests are teaching the Players how to sculpt their universe. Building on from this idea, then, these asks speculate that Quests are also trying to improve the Players as people, so that the nascent universe will flourish under their care.

It's an interesting idea - although it does beg the question of why Sburb is creating such flawed Players in the first place. If it's looking for self-actualized custodians for its universe, why did it create Players like the trolls, who wanted to rule over their universe like tyrants?

I guess it's possible that a flawed Player who self-improves is actually more resilient than a flawless Player who never needed to change. The former would potentially be more resilient, capable of adapting to the changing circumstances of their universe as it grows and evolves.

I wish! That's more of an aspirational schedule, really. I should probably delink it, if it's causing confusion.

I'm not sure whether this is Karkat's canonical birthday - but if it is, I like the irony inherent in the fact that he's not even a Cancer.

If we assume that Sburb did evolve, then it makes sense that it works this way. However, if it was created by some intelligent being, then holding the Players hostage like this seems pretty malicious.

I mean, there are ways to ensure participation in the game that don't involve destroying an entire planet. No matter how clear you were about the risks, if you asked the population of Earth for volunteers, you'd be guaranteed millions of responses.

All that said, if Sburb worked this way, we'd have a very different story. I understand why Sburb works the way it does, in the context of Homestuck's themes.

Speaking of Kingdom Hearts, I'd kind of love for Sora to visit a Homestuck world. His Keyblade upgrade could be the Wrinklefucker - and he'd have to unlock Vriska as a summon, right?

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

Continuation of my Trigun annotation for the book club. I'm doing a deep-read of the Japanese original print (reread) and Overhaul 1.0 (first read) side-by-side, and writing down everything I notice from small details, version differences, translation differences, etc. (and being gay about the characters <3 always important)

The second page has an error - 悪夢 was probably misread as 悪魔 ("happen" and "awaken" are also the same kanji). It should be "Then, the nightmare occurred." It's really cool that this still works really well considering...y'know (not saying for the first-time readers ;) )

I just love how that drawing of Vash is so cool and serious...

...and then you turn the page and he's in the most pathetic cunty pussy-out pose you've ever seen. Easily one of my favorite panels. Also made a math question for funsies. sorry to anyone who got high school flashbacks, but I absolutely loved trigonometry lmao. I could do this forever.

A little pun(?) that may or may not be intentional - In Japanese, someone with a bounty on their head is called 賞金首, lit. "bounty neck" ("neck" sometimes signifies the entire head). The locals call out for the bounty-neck right as Vash hurt his neck lol

I love how creepy Vash moves sometimes. absolute cryptid

This is entirely a Japanese-only detail, but I really loved how Vash said バヤイ (bayai) in the sobbing in French line, because my mom also says that instead of 場合 (baai) when she's being silly lmao. Also, it's notable that in Japanese, Vash says フランセ語 ("Francé-go," where "go" is the suffix for languages) which may be either another miles->iles/double-dollar situation, or just him speaking silly like バヤイ.

Also, the line after that would more accurately be "How am I supposed to deal with all these locals?"

Here, the "Really?" is actually Meryl saying something like "I'll give you a hint."

Meryl tends to be the one responsible for the braincell in fanworks but it's important to remember that she absolutely is dumb too (affectionate).

I'm so glad I wrote that reminder about Meryl's speech, but I don't think I'll be able to do it justice here when I have so much more to talk about. I'll have to write another post later, so I'll link it when it's done. The gist is that she talks like a stereotypical high-class anime girl, and the trope is from how a similar demographic in Meiji-era Japan actually spoke.

The boy's pussy faces the world yet again. I love all the faces he makes!! look at him!!!!!!!!!!! he's so cute

The text on the board here was very messy and squished, but it says something like "Vash the Stampede Absolute Capture Task Force Headquarters." Honestly don't know how to fit all that into the board though so uh good luck on that for 2.0... Also dear god Vash has so much energy... He's just been running for 3 hours straight...!!

Fun fact: the equivalent idiom to "fight fire with fire" in Japanese is "use poison on poison."

Love how Nebraska is just like "no we didn't jailbreak, we just let ourselves out :/"

Translation error for Milly and the chairman - Milly is saying "Why do things keep getting worse and worse!?" and the chairman is mumbling "What's the deal with you two..."

The "Freeze!" is actually untranslated, just re-typed to match the surrounding font. Also, that panel is the first time Vash's antennae is shown bent!! It goes back up immediately after that though.

Fun fact #2. Vash says ara ara. if you even care.

This line never fails to hit me hard. They're all desperate mothers and sisters, and they're taking on the bad role because nothing's more important than their dear children. (reminds me of a certain someone...)

I've seen someone mention this before, but Trimax definitely adjusted the number of plants. Fifty!?!? Also, in Japanese, "plants" and "died" were in quotations.

I love the gun pull in the right panel. Vash obviously definitely doesn't intend on shooting, but is rather showing off his skill and resolve as an intimidation tactic to throw the girls off-guard.

God this entire spread is just so RAW.... (here's the post that's mentioned in blue. it just reminded me)

Some more hypes and sillies. The impact that "KISS MY ASS!!" had on my first read was phenomenal!! It's so silly!! and cool!!!

And then there's this!! Another favorite part of mine. Vash's antennae are bent again! They kind of alternate between straight and bent from here.

The green writing about the onomatopoea are more of just a translation note rather than a suggestion. I can't think of any good beckoning noises in English :V

And finally, Milly calls "Mr. Bomb" "Bomb-kun" in Japanese which I think yall would enjoy lol. And happy strangling her saturday tuesday.

I have Chapter #03 mostly ready, so I'll probably post it tomorrow morning and try to speedrun the rest of the chapters because this is taking longer than I expected!! God there's just so much to say!! (Also gotta remember to write about Meryl's speech!!)

oh, I DO love talking about myself, though this is gonna be kinda weird bc I haven't made a lot of art that I actually like lately lol, and I'm not committed enough to go back super far in my timeline

in no particular order:

1) The extremely self-indulgent Jack/Maddie/Vlad comic I did last year, which was my second most popular post. I had sooo much fun doing it and made myself laugh a lot, idk, it was just such a joy to make and I'm glad other people like it too (I've LOVED reading through the tags on it)

this is my favorite 'panel', I think lol

2) The big memey sketchdump from last year that was my FIRST most popular post lol, OF WHICH this is my favorite doodle.

3) This one I haven't actually posted anywhere yet bc it's still VERY early and I'm not sure I'll ever finish, but I've been fucking around with making a comic out of one of my favorite Stardew oneshots, Practical Demonstration (which is VERY ummm......... citrusy, as one might have said in 2006) and I've actually been kinda sorta enjoying that, despite Art Block From Hell and the fact that I'm Not Good at backgrounds lol

4) idk, I've had a lot of fun doing all my Potion Permit shit! The fandom is small but very funny and friendly, and idk it's just been another thing that's been fun to indulge in while Art Block From Hell continues

5) and speaking of Potion Permit, I've been writing a chemist/matheo enemies-to-lovers longfic called flew like a moth to you (sunlight) that is SO self-indulgent, but I've actually really been liking how it's turning out! It's kinda silly to say, maybe? but I've been proud of my writing with this fic. I think I have an Okay ability to string words into nice-ish-sounding sentences 🥴👌

and since I posted pics for my art, here's one of my favorite bits of the fic's first chapter (also the 'summary' lol)

"Forty years. Raised in the thick of six generations’ worth of collective knowledge, lived tradition, so intimately familiar with medicine and healing that it’s like an additional sense, something woven into the very fibers of him, his entire life’s work -- all of it cast aside in favor of an upstart, fresh-faced chemist whose sole legacy of any significance to Moonbury is one of reckless endangerment and massive ecological collapse. He stares at Myer’s hands, clasped around his wife’s, his child’s. Doesn’t understand what sort of desperation would drive a man to this. Feels a sick twist in his gut at the inconceivability of ever doing the same."

Hi there!!! Did you read the Magneto series and Scarlet witch series? I'm eagerly waiting to know your thoughts!

Yes I did! I read through the last issue of Magneto this morning, as well as issues 9 & 10 of Scarlet Witch. Overall, I really enjoyed the conclusions to both of them, Scarlet Witch more so.

Magneto:

This line from Issue 4 really summarizes I think the overall conceit of this story: "Was the 'evil mutant' just a role I played for the greater good... or the ugly truth? Am I the heir to Charles Xavier's dream... or the beast that will devour it?"

At first, this series gave me the impression that the author's argument was that it had all been an act back in the 60's, that Magneto wasn't really ever 'evil,' and I didn't find that satisfying. I think there's a tendency in fiction to try to absolve characters of their past actions/crimes, in order to make them more palatable and less complex (for instance, absolving Jean Grey of Dark Phoenix's actions by making it so the real Jean was at the bottom of the bay the entire time, or saying that Doom had manipulated Wanda into committing M-Day). Removing their responsibility/culpability for actions they took just isn't as interesting to me as seeing someone grapple with something horrific they had done, and having to struggle and reckon with it, and find a way to atone for their actions.

So basically, I thought at first that this was what this narrative was trying to do - to remove Magneto's responsibility for the stuff he did in the silver age. But by the conclusion of the series, I think it became more clear that deMatteis & co were really trying to examine these two opposing poles of Magneto, of his capability for intense rage and violence, but also for empathy and compassion.

I think if the series had been longer, this would've been super successful. As it was, it accomplished what it set out to do in these four issues and the ending scene with Rahne, where they're looking at the photo of Max's mom, it's super touching and sweet. I just wish things had more space to breathe to allow this character study the runway it really needed.

Scarlet Witch:

I ADORE this entire run. I haven't been posting my thoughts on individual issues as much as I used to - and that isn't because these things aren't good, they're fucking fantastic - I've just been busy with work (& getting back into writing fanfic). But I need to be super clear - this is my favorite Scarlet Witch solo ever (not that we have many lol) and probably is up there in one of my favorite comic runs of all time.

The artwork is GORGEOUS. The colors used are amazing and the expressions on the characters, by god they just fucking sing. I love the care taken to depict Wanda respectfully and accurately, the new costumes are sick af, and everything is just so dynamic. Sometimes, I have a hard time figuring out what is happening with comic book art, but I never really struggled here - even as we are dropped into wacky new situations, often times jumping from completely different contexts from panel to panel. And the covers, they are just.... just chef's kiss - perfection!

And the characterization, gods - just incredible. I didn't really like Orlando's Marauders run, I ended up dipping out somewhere in arc 1 or 2 of it, so I was a little worried about Scarlet Witch. I'm so glad to have been proven wrong. The cast works together so flawlessly, the little moments recalling past continuity without aliening new readers is fantastic. I adored Wanda calling Joseph Iosif and I'm hoping that, when we next see him, he may just adopt that as his name? (Although I'm not expecting to see Iosif around any time soon, given that Max is coming back, and historically when Max is back and a good guy, Iosif is either dead or a bad guy).

The treatment of Wanda's family was everything I could have hoped for - honoring Magneto as her father, her interactions with her siblings, with her kids, with her niece. Seeing Luna Maximoff again in a comic was NOT something I saw coming but I loved it lol.

I also just loved the rotating nature of the problems she faced - that every issue was a new adventure, a new place, a new way for Wanda to demonstrate her growth and healing by giving back to others. She's an OP character by definition and I never felt myself bored with the conflicts she had to face. They were unique and varied and I felt most of them, on some level, had a direct connection to a period of Wanda's own history - hell, they even had her basically go and confront someone who was doing a WandaVision which I found sooo funny lmao.

(If you can't tell by my rambling, I'm kinda obsessed with this series...)

The final villain I really liked - partially because I am an inorganic chemist, so a lot of the science and stuff that I do actually comes from alchemists. I think having alchemist villains for Wanda to face is super interesting and a nice change of pace from the demons and other witches she is usually up against, and I hope we see more of Nicola. She's a super neat foil for Wanda, particularly with the current continuity that Wanda comes from a line of Scarlet Witches, and Nicola comes from a long line of alchemists.

Darcy was a treat, she worked super well here, and I kinda ship her with Zelma now??? Like they're girlfriends, right??? Right???

There's probably things I'm frothing at the mouth over with this series that I've forgotten about, but I also don't want to write you an entire essay in response, so.... I'm gonna cut myself off here and say that I am VERY excited for the follow up Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch series. (Maybe we'll get a Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch & POLARIS series one day, hmmm? Please Marvel? Pleeeeeeeease? I neeeeeed it soooo much....)

It's nice to see you talking abt the problematic political stuff the manga deals with, i read for the drama and gay ness and how the tropes are well executed. May i know your most fav and least fav arc and why??

thanks so much i'm so glad! i actually started reading it for the gay stuff as well but it awakened my seven year hyperfixation on the cold war

i've actually answered this before but now i've read these chapters more + i have a new Least Favorite Arc. so lets go

so, i don't know how much of a consensus this is, but my favorite arc is definitely the alaskan front, full stop. i also love eau de cologne and the free shooter/der freischultz

but i think that alaskan front captures FEWL's essence perfectly - the comedy is great, the characterization is at its' best, the art is gorgeous - the perfect balance between aoike's shojo artstyle and all the gun and machinery - and every character has a chance to shine, from agent Z, to the forgotten mr. jones, to mischa and to, of course, dorian and klaus.

plenty of my favorite panels and scenes come from this arc alone. one of my favorite scenes in the manga is one where eroica and his team manage to outsmart the KGB and even NATO, to the point that when dorian tells eberbach he had the KGB hospitalized (through giving them laxatives), he doesn't believe him

there's also some classic moments, like klaus saying his love of nescafe (just 'instant' here lol) for the first time, mr. bonham calling eberbach nato old man (or nato geezer lol), and whatever the hell this third picture is

i just find it great, all around. it struggles with pacing, as most of these longer eroica chapters do lol, but it still manages to be entertaining as you're building the web of spies in your head, and watching the funny interactions throught. this too is one of my favorite scenes ever. absolute great ride 🌹❤️🐗

now! my least favorite. this i won't expect to be a consensus, but it's seven days in september. readmore cos it turned out too long. here's some dorians from the alaskan front as a mental preparation

so right from the start, seven days follows midnight collector, the story about dorian's past interluded with im trying to steal the man in purple and another painting (i should mention that while the story about klaus' backstory doesn't have dorian, the major has a whole subplot in dorian's chapter), and as the arc proceeds, it starts a recurring theme of eroica's story being cut short/overshadowed by whatever's going on with the major.

i would only find this mildly annoying, if it weren't for the fact that the stories can become slow at best and boring at worst without dorian's more campy and, let me just say it, gay energy

this arc also starts another recurring thing for FEWL: very long and convoluted arcs. by the second half of seven days, we have: major and eroica crashing a plane in a convent, mischa and his KGB guys and salim and his misogyny and a brief appearance by lawrence and the SIS. they've already traveled three countries, and honestly by here i was already lost. it just gets to a point of too much information where the only thing keeping you going is the gags

(we can get into salim another day lol)

another thing that begins to suffer in this arc is the characterization. it's prolly somewhere around this arc that you might start to think 'wow, it's been a long time since eroica and the major have had a soft moment', and it's all downhill from here. there is such a focus on keeping eberbach as an asshole with zero development that their characterization actually begins to sufer -- klaus is more and more unbearable, and dorian is more and more stupid.

in this arc, there's a scene where, after dorian fails to get klaus drunk (story for another day) and klaus is the one that gets him drunk instead, he does a striptease, before klaus takes him to a bathroom. klaus tells him he hates him and threatens to beat him when he's asleep, but when dorian actually blacks out, klaus buttons up his jacket around him so that he isn't half-naked in a bathroom.

but! the scene is then completely ruined because shortly afterwards klaus and mischa (the bear cub) literally WATERBOARD dorian when he's still blackout drunk, in a scene that's actually hard for me to read

and again, it's really all downhill from here. seventh seal is another arc i really dislike, bc it follows this trend of eberbach manipulating and tricking dorian, and dorian's affection towards him stops being this funny if unlikely thing, and starts being more... sad lol

i had to get that one out of my system BUT. this is Not The Worst Yet! this arc features the single WORST scene in the ENTIRE manga and i will not be taking criticism about this

mischa, knowing the major's dad was a... tank commander... in the german army. in ww2, brings klaus to the el alamein desert, where a nazi generla or whatever lost a battle to the allies, with the intent of humiliating him. and it actually WORKS -- and once mischa obviously loses to eberbach in the end, it's supposed to be this moment of... reinvidication, almost? klaus says he doesn't care, but mentions how it hurt his pride, you know?

i find this one actually gross to read JFGJLKJGLGF its so incredibly bad either way you read it -- the major is offended mischa would remind him the germans lost the war, or mischa, a mischa, clinging to the past when the russians won the battle, but now in the current day the germans are better.

by this point you'd think we'd be over the 'major's dad was a soldier in ww2' thing or at least consider it an obvious Bad Thing -- but here's aoike, in 1982, still coyly playing up how germans are good and noble and all that

there's plenty other pretty bad eroica chapters -- insha'allah with its' messy orientalism and.. child brothel, midnight collector's messy handling of dorian's trauma, the seventh seal having dorian 'trick' a man in drag, the panda's maze everything etc. but seven days in september still remains at the top of me for having a moment where eroica actually stopped being fun, a moment where i actually had to stop to think about the author's politics and how they end up being cast over the story.

He held the glimmer of being well off, people could tell easily that he was a man on the run. He never spoke to anyone so it made it all the more difficult to figure him out. All you could envision him as was as someone who had a wealthy past, a prince or a senator, now exiled to this dry land. “They were coming for you. I did what anyone else would have done.”, you tell him but your heart was pounding in your chest. You were doing this with ulterior motives. “Then you should have run.”, there was an edge to his voice, an underlying anger which only sparked yours. “I saved your life.”, you square off against him having had enough of his demeanor. Anytime you did something nice, he would push you away but now, he was being unreasonable.

He needed the hot bath to clear his head. It wasn’t supposed to be like this, you weren’t supposed to be involved. He dipped his head beneath the shower nozzle, his hair stuck to his face, he had been unnecessarily mean to you after what you had just done for him. Ever since he had first arrived here, he had witnessed your kindness, a rare quality on a planet like this. Now he was struggling with things beyond his control, he had not been in touch with his feelings that he was so preoccupied with shutting it off that whenever he saw you that vault began to unravel.

You kept to the living room, mostly to avoid him. He was being ungrateful and you had a sliver of self respect to know what you deserved, this was not it. The bedroom door slid open and he emerged. His face was restored with his past glow, soft from the shower. His hair combed back like it once was, for a second, it was as though no time had passed at all. He took a seat across you before he spoke. “Thank you.”, his blue eyes found yours. “For all of it.”, he spoke slowly as though each word was thought through. “Dinner is on the counter.”, you responded. It was for the best if you distanced yourself even though you knew it was difficult to do. Ever since he set foot on your planet, he owned your heart. He moved away and you let out the breath you were holding in.

He wore new robes, darker than the ones before which brought out the bronze of his hair making it hard to focus on anything else. Dinner passed by in silence, but you busied yourself preparing the bed. Anything that will keep you moving, trapped under the same roof as him was sure to drive you mad and break your heart, so you kept away. “You can have the bed. I will take the floor.”, you instructed him and he began to object but you moved ahead to take your place. “You need to be well rested. Don’t argue with me on this.”, you snuck the pillow under your head and turned to face the wall. There was silence, a sigh and the squeak of the bed frame. So he did head your word.

He felt restless, how could you have known that it has been a while since he had slept properly. He peeked over the edge to see your still form sound asleep, he laid on his back staring at the ceiling. “Can’t sleep?”, he heard you ask softly in the dark. “Yes.”, he twisted around, the night was beginning to grow cold. He knew the stone floor was getting colder. “The weather’s getting colder.”, he remarked trying to gauge your movement in the dim light. “Yes. My hands are cold.”, you responded and his heart sank. He was comfortable and warm on the bed while you were out in the cold. “Come up here, there’s still room.”, he urged you and waited. It was obvious what your answer was going to be, he knew. You’ve been avoiding him ever since he acted arrogant and uptight. “Do you think so?”, your voice was layered with sleep and he could imagine how tired you might have been. “Yes.”, he told you. “Ok, only for tonight “, he heard the shuffle of your feet as you picked up your blanket and made your way to the other side. “We stick to our sides.”, he hears your warning and felt laughter bubble within his chest. “Ok.”, he eased you as you laid down next to him. Your face now in full view, up close in the soft moonlight, he wanted to touch the slope of your temple.

“Give me your hands.”, he asks when he notices your bottom lip quiver. “Ben, don’t trouble yourself. I will be fine.”, you try to speak but it mixes with your chattering teeth. He furrowed his brows, reached down and pulled up both your hands which he cusps within his, rubbing them together to generate the warmth your body so badly needed. “Ben.”, you call but he doesn’t stop. “You need to stay warm.”, he tells you but you feel weak in the cold that he begins to worry. “I’m going to come closer.”, he lets you know as he navigates closer to you, his body emanating radiant warmth.

His hand slid across your waist pulling you closer, his touch thawing frozen ground. You turn but he doesn’t let you go. “Why do you have to be stubborn?”, he whispers stroking your cheek. “Like you aren’t?”, you respond and in the darkness he could feel a smile on his face. “Get closer or you’re going to freeze.”, he instructs and you stay still. He huffs. “Must I do everything?”, he gets closer, your hands rest on his chest, you unfurl your palm to feel smooth skin. “You are not wearing a shirt.”, you mumble. “No one sleeps with a shirt on.”, he retorts. “Most people do.”, your eyes adjust to the dark to see your nose almost touching his.

He lays still under your touch, only signs of his breathing telling you that he was real, that this moment was real. His muscles flex under your fingers as you drag your hand across his chest encountering bumps of healed scar tissue. You freeze and he exhales. The world around you, the inquisitors, the empire, the past, glimpses of his face enter into your mind like you have seen his face before. You feel the pressure of his hand on your wrist, he leans forwards and places his forehead on yours like he was holding on for dear life. The imagery flushes out, you see Coruscant for the first time. He was taking you through the places he had once been in. The Jedi temple, his home, you were seeing it all from his point of view. But then you feel pain. His pain. The loss of a brother, an immense task and a lonely life. You see him on tatooine and feel your eyes brim with tears. It fades to black, he breathes faster but he doesn’t move away. It continues and begins again with a feeling of warmth. The sands shimmering in the mid afternoon heat, an oasis and then you see it. Your heart tightens. He sees you and his world cascades in colour. It plays like a movie, unsaid words now being spilt in troves. It starts to fade and all you hear is the echo of your laughter coming to realize that it lingered in his memory because he held on to it dearly. Through it, you hear his true name and play it your mind. He moves away, the edge of his eyes gleaming. “It was time you knew. After everything that has happened.”, he whispered.

“Obi wan.”, you call for him, his eyes snaps to yours.

Home, you reminded him of home. In the chaos of a lost life and a broken past, he seemed to have found that feeling again, one he swore never to feel again. He heard his name on your lips and the world shrunk to the perimeter of this bed and this warmth, that anything in the void beyond it, did not exist. “If I render your dull life with colour, then you must know.”, he felt your fingers tuck a strand of his hair behind his ear. “that you make me feel less alone in mine.”, his heart thrummed with life. He titled your chin to meet his eyes and in the comfort of healed scars and revealed truths, he kissed you. For the first time in his life, he was not in a state of urgency. He heard you inhale sharply, stiffen under his touch and then let go, like water running out to sea, you melted into him. He held you, he wasn’t breathless but rather quite the opposite.

He had only now come alive.

💡Lightbulb Moment💡

There comes a point where, if you've read enough of the comics by Lars Jansson, or even those handful where he collaborated with Tove as a writer for the "Jansson" phase of the comics (as I like to call it), you notice that the Inspector shows up suspiciously often for a cameo featuring dialog for one or two panels at the very least, and then you hilariously realized that the Inspector is quite possibly Lars' favorite non-main character.

It's so silly, this guy barely had a personality, he was like a different hemulen every comic along with every other police hemulen up until Club Life in Moominvalley where he's finally given his iconic scarf and obliviousness but not much else, and then Lars comes in and picks this guy up by the scruff and decided to make him one of the most queercoded guys in the comic.

I hear Lars had a big interest in detective novels and had experience translating them but I'm not as well-versed with the life stories of the Janssons as I am with their Moomin works so I could be missing something but my word does Lars' favoritism become apparent by the time you realize the first comic he made after the whole strip was given to him established some very major details about the police station's operations and it becomes difficult to name a strip thereafter that doesn't have atleast one panel featuring the Inspector in some capacity.

This isn't a criticism as much as it is an amusing observation because I myself am an Inspector enjoyer, I am glad Lars made him quite the character, he is charmingly silly, he goes against many hemulenish and police conventions of the time and he casually rebels against conventions of traditional western masculinity.

Possibly the first appearance of the Inspector we know was in Moomin and the Martians, where he is the second police Inspector to show up in the comic and is mostly irritated by being a walking lightbulb because of the alien device, then was followed adoringly by the Martian because he reminds him of his electric mother. When the effects of the device wore off, he greets the Martian enthusiastically but the Martian is upset and wants to go back to his mum, and despite learning that this small creature is the Martian that the police has been searching for through the entire comic, he does the kindness of trying to comfort him and takes him to the Moomins via blanketed basket, even calling the Martian a darling when speaking with Moominpappa. I would also like to note he's the first ever policeman who took his hat/helmet off in the whole comic strip.

The first real establishment of the Inspector's interest in roses was in Moomin Winter, where he mentions them as an excuse to not take in the Nibling in fear of any child's ability to ruin them, even insinuating that they're worse than criminals. He's also established as a sweet tooth, a fact that he is embarrassed to admit even to Moominmamma who seems to be a very close old friend according to an earlier comic, Club Life in Moominvalley. He also sneaks into Moominhouse's basement to play poker and drink home-distilled whiskey with Moominpappa and Wimsy whom are established as having very troublesome pasts.

Moomin's Lamp, Lars' first comic, established his "prisons" to be very homely, filled with frilly decorum and motivational quotes amidst the etched wall graffiti and traditional prison bed, and the Inspector would cook meals for the prisoners, and while Finland is currently known to have very humane prisons these days, this comic was published in 1960 when the idea of prisons being a place for rehabilitation wasn't a popular idea.

And this is only to mention the major points of his character development, there are many things to point out about the Inspector between and after these comics. There's points to be made about his taste in interior design, his fixation on roses even above his job, his consumption of detective novels, his less than dignified sweet tooth and tea parties with the other police officers, his minor-to-possibly-major crimes, his ownership of weapons (none of which are firearms), his straight up avoidance of duty in the winter, his status as a bachelor, his leniency, his relationship with Stinky and even the Moomins and his constables, his nephew, so many things about him as so fascinating for me to think about.

And to have all of this be watered down/straightwashed in the 90s series then straight up ignored in the 2019 series feels like a bummer to me. Most of what made his character feel so out of place yet right at home in Moominvalley is his queerness and otherwise general disinterest in his job, and while queer people have had a long history of practically being at war with the police and the law as a whole, I think the Police Inspector being the way he is reinforces the queer fantasy of the Moomins.

(You sound like you're concerned about him finding something in particular out, Mr. Inspector. Even Snorkmaiden is raising her eyebrow)

And to have this characterization coming from Lars' writing when he doesn't seem to put that much queerness into other things is something to consider I think.

Also I got off track from what I initially wanted to say about his almost customary cameos in the Lars comics but I keep laughing thinking about how Lars put what could likely be his grandparent in a time travel comic, the resemblance between them is uncanny despite the different uniform.

Chapter 101

*dies in the street like a dog* aaoaoaouuouu *swings body from the rafters* aaorurouoouu no rest for the wicked no rest no rest... aa aa aa ach ach ack ack agh agh

there could not be a more earth-shattering opening... the first real peak into living, middle-school-aged Tsukasa... pictured in the rafters of the theater, singing. Singing, like he does---! I'm not ready I'm not ready ...

It's not set in stone, but he might be doing a little vocalization (like a coloratura....?) of Over the Rainbow.... ah you know, I get emotional, as his VA, Megumi Ogata, can sure as hell sing....! So can Nene's, who sings the ED of the anime... it might be rather beautiful....

I hope someone super into music can properly confirm the song...

please, Amane... what do you want... ? you can't stay quiet and obtuse forever... can we hear it out loud?

overwhelmingly full of love... Aida is an unbearable master of expression....

I really love ah... this simple interaction, it's so full. Amane knows there's better things for Tsukasa to do, that it's not fun or interesting to stay here, that there would be other people wanting his help... it's not the responsible thing, to ask Tsukasa to stay. But what do we care about that? We only want to know what Amane himself wishes would happen... if he could have anything, if it was only up to him, if we disregard the students, if we disregard what is responsible or proper to want, what would he really want....?

the most exciting image to ever see... aahhh. Living twins together in their first year of middle school... Amane isn't yet covered in wounds, bandages, and bruises... no rope burns. He's a bit dirty from messing with the clock, is all. Tsukasa's pose is sublime... also, how incredibly small Aida makes the boy's asses in the modern day is wondrous, lol. There was a short period in her art where there was more going on there, but she returned to the stick-thin principle from ye olde times (early JSHK is so ah... 'filled out'? but Snow White is sssooo sticks ... I prefer her more extreme styling, I really love how young and gangly the boys feel....). Tsukasa's shirt isn't tucked in, while Amane's is .... ♥ Such tiny little hips they have... I could really drink in these panels for a century..

you know, Aoi is always describing Akane as so helpful and kind and always doing everything for everybody, but I feel like we constantly see him being mean and fussy wwwww it's either such a 'tell and not show' situation, or Aoi has way too kind of a view on Akane wwww...

oh yeah! My husband wondered if maybe Aoi can't tie her hair so easily anymore, after losing the feeling in one of her hands.... maybe she'll wear it down more often, as a result.

Anyway Hanako being all whiney left out sad boy is always my favorite... I love little sulking boy. I'm glad Nene is so kind with him. She really does her best for her little man. I love his overly specific ideas of what to do, lol.... Ah... he's very cute isn't he... yabai...

GETTING TO THE MEAT OF THIS ALL, though. Haha .. uah, I dunno... was Amane a Clockkeeper, is that the implication....? Clockkeepers are indentured into servitude in their first year, and serve for the duration of their time at Kamome...

on the first day no less, the Clockkeepers nab they boy. The Clockkeepers stage something to make a kid desperate... in Akane's case, they endanger Aoi, right in front of Akane..

is it possible...? Well at least, I don't see why not.... maybe yes maybe no...

if Amane has been trapped in this system for so much of his life, how miserable that would be... Akane was targetted by the Clockkeepers surely because of how devoted to Aoi he was, while Amane is naturally protective of his little brother....

I wonder if this is kinda 'moments before disaster' then...

We'll have our whimsy for now, imagining it, at least. Amane wouldn't have Teru there to make him special enchanted glasses, which are what allow Akane to live a somewhat normal life. Amane would have to see kaii everywhere! His power meanwhile, could only stop time for short durations... ah, I've always thought of him as so ignorant of the world of mysticism, so this would be such a shift....

I wonder what sort of measures are taken to keep Clockkeepers in line? Akane is a dutiful boy and even outside of Aoi, does as he's asked in most situations, easily cajoled into anything, as Aoi describes him... but Amane was a difficult boy who is often enough, defecting responsibility, by 2nd year (age 13) anyway....

I'd imagine there's a kind of mind-wiping of your Clockkeeping career post-serving in order to preserve mysteries... as much as the mysteries erase things suchas memories of missing students.

well, I would love the resentment and betrayal this would give Amane to recall! Feeling messed with, feeling manipulated, even after all of these years working as a mystery, mingling with No. 1.... aha, really made a fool of, every day, right? Again and again ... And just in time, if the Broadcast Club is angling to snatch the Clockkeepers....

whatever the case... let's get those damn Clockkeepers!! Whether you ruined Amane's school life or not... ! Aha, sounds like a good motivator to me, and even a good reason for Tsukasa to want to unpack some things to Amane.. what if all the mysteries have done, is ruin the Yugi's lives, ruin Amane's life? We really should tear the place apart then... and as often as possible, use those within the system suffering from it to do it....

uauuuhhhh I'm so worried Amane won't be able to keep his promise for any reason, and will again be too caught up in the mysteries world to enjoy a festival....

I wonder if even Nene-chan would prefer to miss the festival, than be without you, just like Tsukasa ... wouldn't your girlies always prefer to be with you, even if it means no rainbow cotton candy, no snacks, no plays.... ahhhh.

Nene-chan being so cute... Amane being so romantic.... them being such goons.... all so healingly precious... enough healing preciousness to balance out the looming dangers....

I hope you two get to do something wonderful and fun, at some point...

Fukuchi for the ask game please!

Fukuchi, sure!

Favorite thing about them: Causing Akutagawa to die for Atsushi I think he's a very well written villain!! He's sympathetic and likeable and his motivations are sincerely noble and understandable. His plan fell a little short, but that's just bsd for you ahah. I like how he poses real and relevant political questions, I dig any sort of political discussion. Overall, he's just a character I have lots of fun to reflect over and talk about, but that's primarly due to being a politics nerd pffttt.

Least favorite thing about them: I find some of the gags he gets into quite unpleasant, it's not for my taste personally.

Favorite line:

Self-explainatory. But like, something that actually has to do with Fukuchi...

It's just, I get the sentiment? Like, I get the feeling of being willing to do anything if it's to save even one single person.

brOTP: Sorry for being predictable, but highkey Fukuchi and sskk lol. Because Fukuchi seems to care about them /so much/. I find it a truly moving part of chapters 84-88, how Fukuchi doesn't want to fight even more than sskk themselves. He's genuinely sorry for them. He offers them heartfelt advices. He waits for them, he gives them time to regrup. He offers to spare one of them. Fukuchi has been a kinder mentor figure to Akutagawa in twenty minutes than Dazai has been in six years. He compliments Akutagawa and acknoweladges his value and spares him words of respect even after his death. I just,,, in a perfect world he would have loved them dearly, and be the first supporter of their union.

OTP: I REALLY like Fukuchi and Fukuzawa. Tragic yaoi FOR REAL. Very characters who aren't canonically gay but whose behavior just makes so much sense if you read them as gay. Also my other personal shipped them before they got popular. They just care about each other SO MUCH they didn't ever denied it and yet are forced to be on opposite sides... Ultimate star crossed lovers fr.

nOTP: Nothing. I need to delete this section.

Random headcanon: I can't think of anything of a proper headcanon, but I feel like he's looked to Fukuzawa and Ranpo many times and intimately wished they could have created a family together. I feel like the chapter 83.3 cover (the one a little further below) is exactly what Fukuchi would have dreamed his life to be if the world was different.

Unpopular opinion: I'm glad he killed Akutagawa. Duh. I've said this so many times but the “I wish Akutagawa didn't die” is a sentiment I really can't share.

Song i associate with them: I can't believe I could actually think of something, but Knife by rerulili is perfect as the love triangle / katanas / dying in your gay lover's arms story.

hi imp I hope you're doing well :) I'm the new namor fan anon from last month! I've been reading a lot of silver age roy thomas namor and recently finished the byrne/jae lee run, I'm really enjoying the character so far! He's become one of my favorites. I hope this isn't too much of a bother but I'm a little lost of what goes after his 90s run and modern era (2010s-2020s). what should I read? I know of namor the (very little) minis he's had in the 2000s early 2010s, but I don't know what goes directly after the 90s run and I'm pretty out the loop with current marvel comics (I'm a pretty new reader overall) . Again I hope this isn't too much of a bother. thank you very much :)

Hello! I am doing as well as can be, thanks for asking, and fan questions are never a bother, I try to answer them as in depth and as quick as I can. I'm really glad to have you on board with Namor Nation! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the character.

As for what comes after the 90s run, I will admit that I never talk about this era much because frankly I don't enjoy all of it. So I will break down where to read next for chronological stuff and what I personally think is best to read.

So right after the 90's series concludes we have the Atlantis Rising Event which is a 10 issue arc but Namor appears in the Fantastic Four just before this arc kicks off.

Fantastic Four (1961) #400 Atlantis Rising: Fantastic Four: Atlantis Rising (1995) #1 Fantastic Force (1994) #8 Fantastic Four (1961) #401 Fantastic Force (1994) #9 Fantastic Four (1961) #402 Fantastic Four: Atlantis RIsing (1995) #2 Fantastic Four Unlimited (1993) #11 Warlock & the Infinity Watch (1992) #41-42

Namor isn't in every one of those comics and imo you can just read Atlantis Rising #1-2 and the Fantastic Four issues and you will be fine. Then you follow Namor's story as he joins, not officially, the Fantastic Four team, he just hangs around the team and spends his time trying to get with Susan. During this era the writer had killed off Reed with no intention of bringing him back unless Marvel ordered it. So the team spent real time years without Reed in the book, instead the writer takes Namor and sticks him in the comics where all he does is run around screaming about how he wants to be with Susan.

I cannot stress enough that you do not need to read these comics because when it comes to Namor they have his whole character revolve around trying to seduce Susan. This is the era where a lot of fans who haven't read Namor's comics get their characterization, the macho sleazy sexist Susan seducing sea man.

Fantastic Four (1961) #400 - 412. (Note: #412 is where fans often like to go "Namor is a rapist" and take panels out of context to "prove" that, it's just really sexist terrible writing and I really don't think people should base all of Namor's character on these issues but unfortunately this era did a lot of harm to people's perception of Namor as a character.)

After that it's really hard to keep track of Namor's character without this list because he just appears in so many things as a one time cameo or guest star, and it's not until The Defenders (2001) that we get him in a consistent book again.

The Defenders (2001) - The Defenders are forced to work together The Order (2002) - The Defenders go evil

Then we have the young Namor series, because Marvel wanted a revamped starting point for new Namor fans due to the possibility of Namor getting a live action solo movie in 2004, however the movie was canceled after the script was done, and it's a good thing because the script was terrible!

Namor (2003) - Namor in his younger years, this comic series is considered part of Namor's continuity but really no one ever references it and it takes some departures from his first human interactions however I do enjoy this comic series even if it doesn't perfectly fit into his usual 30s-present origin.

Then after that we get Namor in Invaders, Avengers, Thunderbolts, seriously without the wiki list it's really hard to follow where he shows up next because Marvel just used him wherever they wanted.

Then we have a really fun series with The Defenders (2005) then that goes into Civil War, Namor loses Nita, and there are a few solo comics like Marvel Comics Presents (2007) #7 we finally have anther mini series solo for Namor in Namor (2007) which takes place right after Civil War and that transitions into Namor's Dark Reign/X-Men in the late 2000s - early 2010's era. When in doubt of where to look next the wiki is seriously a good tool to search through but I can always help out if you have any other questions. Also you SHOULD read Sub-Mariner: The Depths if you haven't yet, because it's a great undersea horror series, it's set around the 1950s and can be read at any time. I love that series.

...A rant...

First, I'd like to preface that I'm glad Bakugo is alive. He's not my favorite character, but he's turning a new leaf and deserves a chance to grow and become a better person. And I'm so glad that him and Izuku have reached a decent point in their relationship... It seems much healthier than before.

But I absolutely loath the idea that they will both have OFA. I saw someone mention this because of one of the newest manga panels.

There was a theme like this in the movie "Rising Heroes" and I hated it so much back then.

Bakugo has been praised for having an extremely powerful 'heroic' quirk all his life. I get that he bullied Izuku because of his own insecurity, that makes sense but is never an excuse. Izuku was tormented his entire life for not having anything. We can easily assume that he had no friends and the abuse from his classmates didn't stop at just petty insults, it was most likely physical as well.

Not only this but all the times Bakugo has tried to attack Izuku in the manga/anime, Izuku's jumpiness around Bakugo. And even the time All Might punched Izuku after Kamino, Izuku flinched when All Might tried to touch him again. He clearly has experience dealing with relentless attacks from a source and is accustomed to finding methods of self-protection that won't anger the attacker. Not only that but one could even argue that Bakugo's bullying has led to Izuku's imposter syndrome, lack of self-preservation, and sense of self-worth. And that's not to mention the bias that led to this frequent abuse to be ignored for so long. Truly, I could go on and on about this subject.

I understand the current redemption arc for Bakugo, I'm all for it. However, allowing Bakugo access to OFA, the only thing Izuku has ever had, frustrates me to no end. Izuku has never had the power of having a strong quirk in society, Bakugo has. This is Izuku's power, that he earned from having a heroic nature. Why are we giving more power to a child that has been worshiped since childhood for having power. He doesn't need it, he's good without it. He can be weaker than Izuku, there's nothing wrong with that. You can forgive your childhood abuser, that's not my choice, however, giving him MORE POWER. His whole problem was the power in the first place, he treated Izuku like shit because he always felt that he was somehow below Izuku. Therefore, he treated this child like shit his WHOLE life and told him to "jump off the roof" because of his inferiority complex. I love Izuku, I really do. I enjoy his character and it breaks my heart when I see his spotlight being overshadowed by Bakugo (all things considered.)

The prospect of Bakugo having OFA in any way feels like the narrative is awarding him for basic human decency. He apologized (for the second time, but since the first apology sucked, I'm going to pretend it didn't happen,) for doing horrible things... Fantastic... He's trying to atone for his wrongdoings and become a better human... Beautiful, I'm proud of him... Now they're heroes that fight together and have equal strength. Fuck no. The heroes that fight together make sense to me, like they were 'rivals' their whole lives (I really wouldn't call it rivalry, but okay...) and now they stand on equal footing. How about, let my fucking son be the best for once... How about give him this one thing... Please...

I might be wrong about them both having the quirk (or might in the future), but this rant has been brewing since "Heroes Rising" came out and all I've been seeing is Bakudeku stuff, (I need to block that tag,) so I'm a little riled up. No shade if you love Bakudeku or Bakugo or like the idea in general. You are entitled to your opinion and in no way is what I'm saying supposed to be an attack on you.

Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card Chapter 60: Comments + JP-ENG translation differences

Hello everyone! Welcome back to our monthly rendez-vous.... This month I have to say I'm really grateful to CLAMP, they have saved my sanity. It has been a very difficult period for me and this chapter is so intense, there are so many things that interests me and that I love (and so many translation differences to mention) that it really helped me taking my mind off things for a while. I really hope that you too, who are reading this, can enjoy it and live a lighter moment, long or short it doesn't matter.

I warmly suggest you to read this post, as this month our favorite (/s) translators screwed up majorly once again.

The color page

"Considering it's you, it will surely be alright" CLOW!! He's been mentioned a lot in the last chapter, and here he is, in all his glory, in the first color page of Clear Card where he appears fully, opening the future volume 13. I'm glad to see him here to remind us that we might not know where the story is about to lead us, but one thing we can be sure about: Sakura is there, so it's gonna be alright.

Outsiders in their own groups

I'm gonna be frank from the get-go: in this chapter, save for one panel at the end, there's no trace of the original characters of Card Captor Sakura. The protagonist is the only one who managed to get that small cameo (and Clow on the cover)... Yes, this chapter is entirely dedicated to the new characters. And if you allow me, I think this kind of backstory was long overdue.... The flash back is from Kaito's childhood. What we believe is Akiho's mother appears out of nowhere beside little Kaito, who's sitting by the infamous fountain, not particularly startling our black kitty but rather surprising him that she was able to pass through his "lockout magic" (Kaito teach me). He's all "what are you doing here, you're your clan's most powerful magician, it's gonna be a problem if you're not there at the meeting" and here I can already spot the first translation difference. She replies:

ENG: "All they ever do is talk" JP: "They're just having a discussion, so it won't be a problem" Why I think it was important to stick to the original meaning, translating everything? Well, first of all because it would be nice if for once we could have a precise translation, but most importantly because Akimom here is already starting to hint at something that will be expressed better in the next pages: her clan doesn't need her to discuss, to express her opinions, to use her intellect and her heart. They just need her powers. So, Akimom here is saying "since they're not performing magic but just discussing, it's perfectly irrelevant to them if I'm there or not". Yeah. We all know they're a sh*tty family so we're not really surprised, are we?

Kaito tries to warn her that her clan might be in the cahoots with the ASSociation of magicians right now, but they can't really know what tricks they might pull on them.... Akimom in response tells him that if that's the case, then he probably shouldn't skip this meeting either because he's the most powerful magician in the Association, but Kaito answers that they haven't requested his presence. Again, when there's "discussion" to do, no one wants the intellect of these people, but just their powers. And in fact, Akimom points out that they're really the same, in that aspect. She thinks there are more important things to do, instead of sitting through those boring meetings. And the important thing is... CHOCOMINT!! Akimom summons out of nowhere some transparent baloons containing all kinds of chocomint-flavored sweets 😂 From her speech is easy to infer that they have spoken at least some other times before, because she already knows that he has never eaten chocomint before, and she's all intent in making him try some today! The way she can even store ice cream inside those baloons is amazing! 😂

But Kaito doesn't understand why she's bothering to reach out to him at all. He's perfectly aware (and here he gives her the second warning) that the ASSociation is bound to betray her clan, sooner or later.

ENG: "All they ever think about is how best to increase their own influence" JP: "Cause all they ever think about is to make the Association grow bigger, to increase their own authority and influence, and what could be the loss and gains for that"

Quite an omission, isn't it? Let's express freely and fully how power-driven are those bast*rds, let's not be scared.

Akimom isn't shocked in the least, because her family, too...

ENG: "I know how that is. All my clan ever thinks about is how to bring all the magic in the world under their command" JP: "My people too, all they ever think about is how to be the exclusive owners of all the magic in the world, and the means to control it"

Quite the ambition, right? And we had some other omissions too. Are we afraid to show how frightful these people can be?

But Kaito proves to be an incredibly kind kid. Is there anyone who is surprised, here? I'm sure there are some people who are, but I'm not. I always knew he had a soft heart. He insists on Akimom that there's no need for her to get involved in these dynamics, with these dangerous spells that her family might perform because of their partnership with the Association. She's their most important magician, after all. But Akimom doesn't budge. There is a need for her to be here. She wants to know him! Probably out of embarrassment (which he never expresses with a blush anyway, but only with some gestures...), Kaito stands up and walks away, but Akimom stops him to convince him to get at least a bite of her sweets!!

Kaito turns and replies "Don't you already know what I think about them? Since you can see the future in your dreams" And yes, ladies and gentlemen, we get the confirmation that Akimom is a Yumemi too. And it seems like it's her best feat, too. I am particularly impressed by her motherly, compassionate way to stare at him in this page...she's really set in helping this kid. But stay with me, cause we're about to see another translation difference that will enable us to see another hidden glimpse of Kaito's painful childhood. ENG: "Have you dreams shown you...what my power can do?" JP: "Have you seen it in your [dreams]? What this power can be helpful for?"

I want to linger for a moment on the verb 役に立つ, which is translatable as "being useful, being helpful, be of service, being good for something". I was surprised when I've read this, because just like my dear friend muthaz-rapapa theorized in her character analysis of Kaito some months ago, he seems to have a bit of a crisis over what good all of that power could do. He's got so much of it, and yet he doesn't really know how to use it in a way that feels satisfying for him. There's no feeling of reward. And this must be frustrating for him. My friend theorized that it's also the reason why he's letting those bastards at the Association make use of it at their own convenience, because he doesn't know what to do with it anyway. Futhermore, it's a suprising parallelism to how the Clan called Akiho 役に立たない, "good for nothing", "useless", because at the end of it having a huge amount of power or having none leads to the same result: the feeling of worthlessness that is distressing them. Akimom tries to light up the mood with a joke (and yes, there's another translation difference):

ENG: "Besides, I'm much taller than you! I don't mind changing lightbulbs for you now and then" JP: "Also, since I'm still taller than you for now, I don't need you to come changing my lightbulbs!" I know this transition got many fans confused (especially cause the translation changed the subject of who is changing the lightbulbs), but what I think is happening here (probably an issue of understanding Japanese humor) is that Akimom is just telling him "look, if you're thinking to use your power to help me in house chores, I don't need it, I'm quite good with it and I can still change lightbulbs by myself!" 😆 Kaito obviously doesn't fall for her attempt to steer the conversation, and Akimom finally confesses that yes, she saw that she would meet him if she went to a certain place on that day. But that's all she needed to know, because even if this was a dream she saw with her own powers, what she'll do with this "information" she got from her dream is for her to decide. I think this will be hugely important for Sakura, too. Remember, all the stories of these characters are interconnected and the most beautiful thing is how each one of them can learn something from the others. I think this importance of being able to decide even if you got the power to see the future in your dreams will be pivotal for Sakura, and the decision she will eventually make in the finale of the arc. There's no need to be afraid of the power to see the future, if you can still assert your own will.

Back to the story, Akimom reiterates that she wants to know Kaito. The little boy, covering his face with the neck of his robe, says he will decline that. But it took just a little time to reply, and Akimom takes advantage of it to wonder if perhaps he took it into consideration for a moment 😆 Still denying it, little Kaito leaves, disappearing magically. Akimom hopes that one close day she can greet him by calling him by his name. And here I wonder: his real name?

The flashback goes on, showing us all the attempts Akimom made to make Kaito try her chocomint sweets, and they were a lot, she basically pestered him whenever she could! 😆 We can see some stuff like "chocomint potato chips" and I'm shuddering just thinking about what kind of taste they can have.......... One lucky day, little Kaito finally caves in and tries one of the chocomint sweets. And here guys we get our confirmation, for who was curious (I was): Kaito hates chocomint!!! 😆 Akimom is a little disappointed that he doesn't like it, since she LOVES IT, but still she's very satisfied that he passed from a state of "I don't care about any taste" to at least finding out a taste that he hates....

Finding something you [like]

Cause disliking something is always better than not feeling anything at all. I dunno if I ever mentioned it here, but thanks to a friend on a discord server I found out some time ago that Kaito's behavior got many traits in common with a condition that really exists and it's called anhedonia , and it usually stems from depression. You can read a lot about it on the internet and you will see that Kaito's behavior corresponds to a lot of those symptoms. It's not officially confirmed (and I don't think it ever will). I think that's what Akimom is trying to help him with, here. And remember that in CCS, food=love so the step is very short. So, after finding out what he hates, next is to find out what he likes. And here we get again that irresistible gesture of hiding behind the collar of his robe 😍 On another night, with a nice moon, Akimom makes him try some chocolate pretzels that she made herself. He says he can eat them, but still not quite to the extent of saying he likes them. Kaito wonders "wasn't it a bother to make these?" (cause he's "bothersome bothersome" boy, after all), but Akimom actually says that she had lots of fun preparing them while imagining what face he would make when he'd try them. Kaito notices that the young woman is more cheerful than usual, and she gets suddenly all embarrassed: spotted! I laughed so much when she said "But my clan didn't say anything about it!!" and Kaito is like "Well, they are...." as if to say "well, they don't count, they are stupid", hahaha!

She explains that she had again a meeting to perform magic spells with one/more distant relatives (unclear). Apparently, the one who makes her heart beat so fast is among those distant relatives. 😁 (hey, don't even start it, it's distant relative, who knows how big this family is, they probably share only the family name and not much more) It seems she had lots of troubles trying to summon a spirit for the past years, and I seem to understand from the text that they might be the cause of it? Maybe cause they distracted her? 😁 I dunno, this panel is another of those confusing ones. Akimom is about to tell more about it, but Kaito spots a different aura of magic: it comes from a ring she's wearing on her middle finger! It's hidden under tons of concealing magic, but he can feel it, hehe. Even more embarrassed, Akimom confirms, and she says that that person gave her that ring in order to protect her (here there's another slight translation difference: the ENG says "Someone's sworn to protect me" and yes, at the end of the day that might be also true, but the translation is omitting the fact that it's the ring that's supposed to protect her. Basically, there's a spell in it!)

Kaito comments that this must be a really powerful magician, and Akimom confirms they're only second to her in terms of power, among the members of her clan. Little Kaito, poor him, makes a question basing only on the experience he's ever witnessed till now: "Are you attracted by their power?" and it makes me laugh how carefree Akimom replies "No, it's not like I'm under a seduction spell or something!" 😂 Again Kaito says that's not what he means, and she says that....

ENG: "Someone very powerful gave me this ring...but I don't fall in love with people for their power" JP: "Magical power is indeed a part of that person, but that's not the reason why I fell in love with them"

See the difference in translation? The omission of the part where she aknowledges that magic is indeed a part of the person she loves? I didn't like that omission (replacing it instead with the fact that this person gave her the ring, something they could've put in the correct panel above). It undermines the complete understanding of Akimom's personality: she's not only not attracted because of magical power, but she also aknowledges and accepts everything about the person she loves. I think that's something very important. Something that she's trying to teach Kaito too. While we see a sneak peek of the moment when that person gave the ring to our young sorceress (Of course they're all covered, but I think I will consider them as a male, since we can see their hands being quite bigger than Akimom's, and this is "supposedly" the one we consider as Akidad), Akimom explains that the moment she saw this person, she knew she had found 「私だけの人」 "someone only for me". Reminds you of something? Yes, it's a theme that is well popular in "Chobits" as well! 😁 Kaito wonders if she saw that in a dream too, but she replies that this is something she told herself. Again, a great statement and affirmation of her own will.

And here I ask you to prepare for another translation difference, no, a mistake that is confusing a lot of fans and I hope will not cause too much damage to the understanding of the intricated relationships between the characters... Akimom says that however, she knows a little of what will happen from now on, thanks to her power, so she.....

ENG: "My beloved will do what I ask, even if they're a bit hard-headed. They're very kind" JP: "I will make a request. To a creature that is quite stubborn, but very kind"

*inhales deeply*

So what they basically did here with that "beloved" outta nowhere in the ENG translation is to keep Akimom as if she was still talking about the person she's in love with. And since we can see Momo in the background, everybody is thinking now that Momo is the person Akimom is in love with. It's not like that. And believe me, it's not like I insist on this because I don't want it to happen, actually I've been thinking about that myself, some time ago. But I talked myself out of it because we all know how much Momo appreciated Sakura's chocomint macarons, while we also know that Akimom's most important person absolutely hates chocomint. So it couldn't be her. No, what I want is only understanding and unravel the tangle of the mysteries of this damn Clear Card arc in the correct way, without having to check 100 times if the ENG translation is tricking me or not. The relationships between the characters are important, and if you mess up one of those threads, you make a huge mess. You confuse your readers. Everybody is indeed confused right now. Akimom here changes the subject of who she's talking about, and the word I translated as "creature" is actually 存在 sonzai, "existence", "a being". Since "existence" would've felt a bit weird, I translated it like that. Because Momo is not a person, after all. Also, notice how in the panel, Momo doesn't wear her crown yet? Hehe. A symbol of the fact that Akimom hasn't passed the ring to her yet, like we can see in this flashback:

I think this happened at the very end, before she either gave birth to her daughter or....whatever happened there, happened. Yes, I will not hide it, this chapter didn't sedate any of my anxiety for the fact that Akiho and her "mother" are way too similar (even the friggin' mannerism!!!), and some weird shenanigans might be at work there.... I need a concrete proof. The doubt will always be at the back of my mind until we get an uncontrovertible proof.

Anyways, back to our little adorable Kaito (god how much I love him, in this chapter he's showing all the innocence he's hardly shown before), who's quite confused by the concept of Yumemi, since he doesn't have that kind of power. He seems even a bit sad about it? But Akimom reassures him. It's fine like that. Because if he was able to do literally everything, life would be so boring! Little Kaito makes a distressed face....is he perhaps thinking "it is already boring"?

Someone you like who's only yours

Look, I'll put directly the translation difference here so you can see it for yourself. I double checked with the Spanish translation and we agreed on how to interpret this scene:

ENG: "Listen...maybe I can't help you find what you like. But it's got to be somehwere out there. Something you like. Something that's yours alone. And I'll wait for you to find it" JP: "I will probably not be able to look for what you like together with you. But (certainly) there is something out there that you'll like and it'll be yours alone. And that something will be waiting for you to realize it"

First of all, Akimom is subtly hinting at the fact that soon she'll be gone, and she won't be able to look, together with little Kaito, for what he likes. It's a very sad and important hint. And therefore, she cannot be the one who "will be waiting for him to realize it". She'll be gone, after all. Moreover, the が that sets the subject is near "something that you will like", so that's how we know that one is the thing (or the person......) who will wait for him to realize he likes it.

Remember, the verb 好き (suki) not only means "to like", but also "to love", in our common interpretation.

And just like that, this loooooong flashback ends, and our Kaito boy wakes up on the couch from this fever dream. Apparently, Momo found him passed out in the hallway (dear god....) and brought him there. Not only, but she also covered him with his jacket and loosened his tie to let him breathe better. She hides behind a "you were in the way", but Kaito knows her and comments "Indeed... 'a bit stubborn but kind'". Momo immediately understand who he's quoting... "Lilie....that girl, right?" (yes, she used "ano ko"). That's it! FINALLY WE HAVE A NAME FOR AKIMOM! Lilie (to be pronounced as "Lilieh" - it has been translated as "Lillie" too in other languages) is apparently German for "Lily". And Kaito's favorite flowers are...yeah, lilies 😁 Momo's slight blush made me laugh 😁 she probably gets flustered when one makes a comment about her being kind....typical of Momo, didn't expect any less! 😁 Kaito says that he was surprised when he found out that the book and guardian so rumored about, because not even Clow Reed could obtain them, ended up being in Akiho's hands....and when he saw that Momo changed her appearance, too. Of course!, rebuts Momo, if she kept her original form even those numbskulls of her clan would've realized it!! That was really helpful, for Kaito. Because to activate the magic, the Card that Sakura will produce and Momo's book are indispensable. He wonders if Lilie saw this too, in her dreams. He's probably wondering if she prepared things so he would find them at the moment he needed them. Momo, once again, asks the question she's been asking him all along (even in the Drama CD): "You have no intention to stop, right?" But rather than a question, it sounds like a statement. She doesn't want him to go further, but it's not her place to decide for him. He doesn't even reply, smiling weakly. Momo says "Well, the curtain will now raise on the story you've been creating. The story of Sakura and Akiho, the 'Two Alice'. " But she warns him: "However, this story doesn't belong just to one person. It will proceed according to each of the character's wishes and feelings" I want to point out how the words for "characters" have actually the furigana for "people". Ohkawa and her usual play on words. But most importantly, something that the ENG translation left out, FEELINGS (想い) will play an important role in how the story will go. Of course. That's what CCSakura has always been about, isn't it? I feel like this is a huge warning for Kaito. Because if he's really trying to help Akiho, to save her from her destiny of losing her soul due to the spell inside of her, he will not only bump against everyone's wishes, but he will also have to deal with what SHE WANTS. And if what he wants to do involves him dying and disappearing from her life, she will NEVER consent to it. Aside from all the other collateral problems that he might create to Sakura. Just you wait. I'm preparing myself for an assertive Akiho like we've never seen before! And ultimately, he will have to choose too. And if this is bound to a happy ending, he will not choose what he's choosing right now.

The chapter, though, ends with the last warning from Momo, which contains a surprise. "And once it's begun...you won't be able to come back". The ominous warning is made even more ominous by the realization that what Momo is saying is exactly what the Ominous Voice has been saying all along in Sakura's and Akiho's dreams. "Omae" included and all. Is Momo supposedly quoting the person who really says it, or......is she the one who said it all along???

The chapter ends here, leaving us with some answers but, as usual, even more questions than before. I'm sure they will all be answered in due time. But honestly I was very satisfied with this chapter. I've been wanting to know and see more of Akimom Lilie this whole time, and I can expect to see her on the color page, next month. Actually, since it's gonna be at the beginning of the magazine, there's gonna be a double spread, so I can try to imagine we're going to finally see the other side of the illustration with Nadeshiko? I'm highly anticipating what the color of her eyes would be. It could be crucial....

Kaito was adorable. He doesn't seem mean, just a bit stiff, a real lone wolf, but hiding a lot of kindness. Who does he remind me of? Syaoran, of course. Those two have so much in common ... He seemed to sincerely warm up to Lilie, maybe he even had a kid crush on her? But was this enough to spark the change in him? Or did it only "activate the process", but the real change will happen now, in present time? I have so much to say about his evolution and where the story could lead us, but the post is already far too long. Eventually I will talk about it replying to asks, if I feel well enough to do it.

i don't get it tbh. the apology shouldn't have been here. it was in the middle of everything and it had basically no impact on deku whatsoever? this was sooooo no what i was expecting and tbh i'm kinda mad about it ngl lol also ngl times twice but if whatever ochaco says does reach him instead of the kacchan apology that's been built up as the emotional climax for the entire series i'm just flat out gonna drop this manga lmao. but this was barely an emotional climax at all, i really don't get it

2/2 like we get just a few pages? shoved in there like "okay everyone talked now kacchan disappears from the chapter, that's over and done with, moving on" the apology itself was great, but the placement and brevity undermined its emotional resonance. deku remains the exact same after hearing it, doesn't think about katsuki at all. just about his earlier "can't keep up" words? then we go on to ochaco whose "saving heroes even though that's what everyone has been doing" i guess is more important?

3/3 (last one promise) like i'm sorry but there was time for several chaps of endeavor ugly crying, for mineta's anal beads and pervy romantic trope non-confession, for overhaul to pop up being his usual piece of shit self for no plot-relevant reason, for adult top heroes to stand around for chapters like "huh everything we're doing is awful. let's keep on trusting this smelly kid" and. a few panels for kacchan apology. no reaction. shoved among "idk u well mido but stay!" + ochaco making faces

4/4 (i lied) and all this after katsuki's distress and emotions were once more made into jokes at the hospital, emotional consequences of the war ignored, w all might probably dying and the last thing he did to this kid was ditch him leaving us to guess he maybe gives a shit abt him and maybe he bothered to visit in the hospital cuz they sure didn't show shit. i honestly feel like all katsuki stuff was shoved into the background: krbk friendship for mina, dkbk for ofa, name reveal for jokes...

okay, so I have talked in the past about fandom reacting like Miette whenever this stuff happens, and tbh this is basically what I mean by that anon. there is no reason whatsoever to assume that this is the one and only reaction we'll ever get from Deku regarding the apology and that it will never come up again. this is 100% going to be revisited. and tbh I think it's a smart move on Horikoshi's part, because if he gave us everything in this one chapter then what further development would there be to look forward to? he's gotta hold something back so that we have that one last milestone to anticipate in the rebuilding of their relationship. I've often said that for me me, Deku and Kacchan's story is the most important part of BnHA. and so it makes sense to me for Horikoshi to not completely resolve it until close to the end of the series, if not the very end.

I think this is a pretty good compromise honestly, because I wasn't even sure if we were going to get the apology itself before the finale. but this way we can head into the final battle with Kacchan having put all of his character development out there and not holding anything back, and it's nice to have that, and to have that reinforcement of just how far he's come, and how serious he is about his atonement. and so his feelings are finally all on the table now, and now it's all Deku.

and he deserves to have some time to work out how he feels about this and not be put on the spot to deliver a reaction, honestly. but to say it had "no impact whatsoever" is a huge overreaction imo. first of all, we saw the shock on his face -- he was absolutely floored. this was something he clearly never expected from Kacchan (which is why it was so important for Kacchan to actually say the words, in addition to taking action as he's already done -- because Deku needed to hear them, because he genuinely had no idea that Kacchan actually cared. and he deserves to know that, because Kacchan is one of the most important people in the world to him). not to mention that Deku kind of has a million other things on his mind right now. like we just had a whole entire arc about that lol. the apology isn't supposed to be for Kacchan's benefit; it's supposed to be for Deku's. so let him have the time to absorb it before he settles on what to say. Kacchan had all the time in the world to figure out his part of it, after all.

to me this is like a promise that there will be at least one last great, emotional, and deeply personal moment between the two of them. because when Deku finally does forgives him -- not that he hasn't already, imo, but once they finally have that conversation -- that shit is going to be so fucking cathartic, and tbh I'm glad Horikoshi didn't try to cram that into this chapter along with everything else that's currently going on. besides, I'd rather see that part of their reconciliation happen once Deku is more back to his normal self again; I feel like it would be more meaningful that way. right now he's too exhausted to be able to come up with any words. but he already has shown the best possible reaction I could have ever hoped for -- complete and utter relief and trust. Kacchan is the person he trusted enough that he could finally let go of his fears and anxieties -- if only for a moment -- and give into his exhaustion at long last, and that moment where he collapses and Kacchan runs to catch him has instantly become one of my favorites in the whole series.

so yeah, my apologies anon, but absolutely nothing is gonna spoil that for me, and I can't join you here in being even remotely disappointed with this chapter. well aside from the lack of hug lol (but I can be patient for that as well).
