My Favorite Detail in Farscape is [Spoilers!]
Ok for real spoilers for the entire show including Peacekeeper Wars, so I'll put a gif here and you all agree to scroll on past if you don't want spoilers for a show that ended in 2004.
Ok, so for everyone still here, my all-time favorite detail in Farscape is one that I didn't catch until my second watch-through, and I don't think it's common knowledge in the fandom. (Edit: apparently it's more commonly known about then I realized! Obviously this is because Farscape fans are keen-eyed and insightful and starved for content lol). It's certainly never mentioned or pointed out in the show itself. But it's just so perfect that I get giddy everytime I think about it.
So after Crichton gets twinned, in "Thanks for Sharing," Crichton A gets injured in the bar explosion on that planet that puts lobsters on your head. He is left with a cut above his left eyebrow, and the resulting scar can be used to tell the two Crichtons apart for the rest of season 3 (Crichton A is the one on Talyn with Aeryn).

Anyway, the scar/injury is never really addressed after that first episode, it's just a super-subtle costuming detail that shows the two Crichtons are now living separate lives. Crichton A then dies after finally achieving everything he ever wanted, Aeryn is heartbroken, drama ensues. The question is raised and discussed often, with much angst: which Crichton was the real one? Did Aeryn fall in love with the original or the copy?
Of course, Crichton B eventually accepts that they were both "him" and yet both individuals too, and Aeryn eventually says "There is no longer any difference in my mind." So it's resolved, mostly.
BUT.
2.5 seasons later, at the end of "The Peacekeeper Wars" Crichton B finally activates the wormhole weapon. After Einstein unlocks the knowledge for him, he returns to Moya bloody and hurt. And for the rest of the movie, he has a wound, and then a scar--a small cut above his left eyebrow.
It's never mentioned. It happens right near the end, when obviously a lot of other things are going on. It's really, super easy to miss. But I think it's amazing. They both really were the real Crichton. And even when they split and began leading separate lives--their destiny was still the same. The timelines reunited, kinda, or two separate possible outcomes synced up. It's such a beautiful, perfect bow to wrap up one of the most emotionally powerful arcs in the show. I just love it. Farscape really is in a league of its own.

About 6 years ago someone made a post that said “Farscape is like watching fan fiction”. I had weirdly never seen the show and I knew nothing at all about the premise. The post stuck with me and like a year after that I finally couldn’t hold back any longer. I wanted to see what “watching fan fiction” meant.
Anyway. They were RIGHT. And I have no idea how to find and thank that person for getting me to watch and obsess over this unhinged epic romance puppet show.

My YouTube playlist with fan videos for Farscape. This is the oldest playlist of mine. I've started it before Google bought YouTube. So many videos disappeared in the meanwhile :(. Fortunately, it still grows. Sometimes with new videos, sometimes with some old gems I just haven't discovered before. The vast majority are general Farscape and John/Aeryn, but I think every character and relationship is somehow there. It's just hard to track specific themes with older videos.
I'm going to repeat myself, over and over. But I think, the following, applies to all fandoms.
In my opinion, playlists are currently one of the best ways to find fan videos on YouTube. Especially for less popular or older fandoms or smaller creators. If you have one created for Farscape, I encourage you to reblog or comment under this post with the link. Let's spread the love for vids and vidders and help each other find hidden gems.
Also, please, if you like any of the videos, don't get discouraged by the fact that they're old. Like, save and make comments. I have yet to find a creator who isn't happy when people interact with their older creations. It can make someone's day. Who knows, maybe it will motivate them to dust off their skills and love for the fandom, if they have time.

One of the key things with Faracape is describing the actual events. Like, you get the thing in other fandoms where things are told in hyperbole or exaggeration, where stuff like X-Files sounds like a silly romantic comedy when it's mostly straightforward drama or like TrekTNG sounds like a wild west cowboy rodeo but it's a pretty tame scifi show with minimal adrenaline. And these things are fine because that's like an aspect of fandom, and Farscape fandom goes there in some aspects - HOWEVER, and this is very important, generally the descriptions of actual events of the show aren't exaggerated. They're not out of context to make the show seem stranger or madder than it is. Farscape has it's own conventional dramatic elements like any other, this is true. But the material stuff of things is exactly as manic as its made out in fandom posting. Which, to me this is important because while most fandom hyperbole is an extension of the fandom context of the show, Farscape is for all purposes sans hyperbole, a place where no amount of context will make much more sense of the nonsense. The conventional measure you might use to gauge "how much of this enticing description from fans will be part of the actual content of the show" can be mostly set aside. If the images or descriptions of Farscape sound like the weird fucked up ride you were looking for, it is. It's not quite the dumbest possible team of idiots in science fiction, but it's the closest anyone has got.

Bonus 82: Frak, smeg, and more swearing in fiction - Ex Urbe Ad Astra interview with Jo Walton and Ada Palmer
The words that a culture considers taboo or obscene can tell us things about what that culture considers important or profane. For example, many swear words in present-day English relate to sex and body functions, while historically in English we've also had more religious swears, like "God's blood" and "God's teeth". In fiction, authors can use invented swear words to get around censorship, like "frack" in Battlestar Gallactica and "frell" in Farscape, as well as to create a sense of a particular culture, such as "smeg" in Red Dwarf, which then sometimes take on new lives of their own among fans.
In this bonus episode, Gretchen gets enthusiastic about swearing (including rude gestures) in fiction with science fiction and fantasy authors Jo Walton and Ada Palmer, authors of the Thessaly books and Terra Ignota series, both super interesting series we've ling-nerded out about before on the show. We talk about fictional substitutes for the F word, expletive infixations like abso-bloody-lutely, sweary lexical gaps (why don't we swear with "toe jam!") and old fashioned swears in English. We also talk about learning real-life swear words without full awareness of their emotional valence by reading fiction (such as how Gretchen and Ada don't find "bloody" as taboo as Jo does), cultural differences in taboo gestures such as pointing with the middle finger in real life and teeth-baring smiles in Arkady Martine's A Memory Called Empire, and an extra bonusy bit about recording emotional punctuation in the audiobook of Because Internet.
Content note: Lingthusiasm episodes about swearing contain real swears! If you typically play this podcast around kids, for example, it's up to you whether you want to have that conversation with them.

you know, farscape, more than any other older sci fi that I've seen, has been really good at just not having a whole lot of stinkers.
like I say this as a Star Trek fan... there are plenty of bad and boring Star Trek episodes. there are plenty of really bad Babylon Five episodes.
the entirety of the final season of Battlestar Galactica is a train wreck.
but farscape I can only think of two episodes I genuinely haven't liked, as opposed to a handful that were silly but at least fun character wise.
and that's the episode where Crichton is in a simulation because it tells you right away it's nonsense by killing off rygel, and then it painfully drags itself out and makes you wait 40 minutes to reveal something you already know, which is that it's fake. Plus it's dumb to have Aeryn and him hook up only to reveal it's fake. I already hate will they won't they. a fake simulation that teases it but I know it's bullshit right from the beginning...bad.
really boring and a huge waste of time.
the other one I hate is the one with neanderthal Crichton. god I hate neanderthal episodes.
but I'm deep into season 2, and I think only having two episodes I genuinely did not enjoy is pretty good.
it's stellar actually.
also one of the worst things about older sci fi is that for a lot of them you have to really wait for it to get going and for the characters to get into their groove.
farscape really did it faster than any other sci fi I've watched. I think I warmed up to the universe and its characters by like... episode 3? which is very fast.
even my favorite show, ds9, doesn't get going that fast.
so I'm really enjoying farscape, still.

Named for the space station where its 23rd century action takes place, Babylon 5 spawned a franchise that’s still going—including several made-for-TV movies and a direct-to-video animated film released just last year, something to keep in mind if you get hooked watching the 110 episodes that make up the series itself. Stargate rewatch: 1x19 There But For The Grace of God
One of my favourite episodes titles of the series, also kicking off what is essentially a four episode arc to end season 1 and kick off season 2. 90’s tv was the eternal battle between episodic and arc-based storytelling, and I actually think the show threaded the needle quite well.
I do love an alternative universe episode, back in the beforetimes when a multiverse served a story purpose and not just a fodder for fanservice of the “your favourite character, and they’ve got a new hat!” variety.
The story credit for this episode is David Kemper, an Executive Producer for Farscape, but this is his only Stargate contribution. Robert C Cooper wrote the teleplay, and the episode was directed by David Warry-Smith, his first of 11 for the show.
Love that they brought back Catherine, Elizabeth Hoffman is great (RIP). Given that Jack is a general in this timeline, perhaps we can assume he kept her on the project as opposed to the main timeline’s General West shutting things down/sidelining her after Abydos?
But Jack still went on the Abydos (suicide) mission so presumably wasn’t a general at that time. I know we have to be la la la don’t think about it with the alternate timelines but I’m so curious how things went down in this universe!
How long did it take them to work out how to use the gate without Daniel’s help? I guess they couldn’t communicate with the Abydonians without Daniel but they still were able to kill Ra - how? If they never went to Chulak what triggered Apophis’s interest in them to mount an attack on Earth? Why is the attack in this universe before the attack in the prime universe when really the events should be delayed in the AU?
This is a decent wig for Sam. Sadly, the only decent wig she’ll get the entire series.
I also wonder what was the difference in this universe so Sam didn’t join the Airforce.
Daniel guilelessly giving the address for Chulak right after taking about Jack intending to blow up Abydos. He’s so used to his Jack whose come so far since then, never even thinking that alt!Jack may not have, and what they might want the coordinates for.
lol, Daniel walks down the stairs, crosses the room, looks at the map, then puts on his glasses.
“Every one of those red dots is a destroyed city.” Apophis a fan of the United Celtic Nations it seems.
Daniel finally twigs that he might be in an alternate reality (with Sam defining it for him), but we can’t be too harsh, he canonically has zero pop culture game and this was the 90’s. Even in todays over-saturation of multiverse content Daniel would probably still have no clue.

Daniel and being dead/missing in alternate realities/timelines, name a better duo.
It is interesting that in a lot of the AUs the show explores, Daniel’s lack of involvement in the Stargate program coincides with that universe being doomed.
I forgot that the 38 minute gate window was first established in this episode! That’s a huge piece of lore originating in an alternate universe.
It wouldn’t be an alternate universe without at least one character with silly hair.
Generally I prefer AUs that explore character rather than ones used to advance plot (or are lazy fanservice looking at you mcu), and while the primary purpose of this episode is to give Daniel forewarning of the Goa’uld attack and the gate address to the source, there is some nice stuff here especially around Jack and Teal’c.
Because at their core alt!Jack and alt!Teal’c are still the same - Teal’c still hates the Goa’uld, Jack is still willing to take big risks on his instincts, and there’s a mirror to Children of the Gods where Jack reaches out to Teal’c, but it’s a dark mirror, and it’s the little differences that matter because Jack isn’t the same person as the one in CotG, who went through the Abydos mission with Daniel and came out a better person, instead he’s the one that sent the bomb that killed Teal’c’s family, and it dooms them both.

“I also wish to blow us all to hell.” Alt!Sam is a badass. No difference to prime!Sam there.
There’s also an interesting moment between Teal’c and Daniel in the gateroom - Teal’c doesn’t shoot straight away when he could have, so maybe Jack telling him of the alternate universe where Teal’c was fighting the Goa’uld got through. He still fires as Daniel runs for the gate, but only hits him in the shoulder - at such close range Teal’c could probably have made the kill shot. His hesitation saved Daniel’s life, and ultimately the life of his other self.
Because Daniel’s presence in the other reality changes nothing for it - alt Jack, Sam, Teal’c and Catherine all still die, the Stargate is destroyed and that would have happened anyway (with maybe the exception of Jack being able to stall Teal’c to set the self destruct).
But Daniel’s changed - there but for the grace of god (or fate) go our team.

Farscape rewatch: 2x11 Look at the Princess Part 1
This three-parter is one of my fave eps and I think classic Farscape: taking the usual scifi trope and remaking it into something unique. On the surface, the set-up is something that has been done before, not just in scifi but in adventure lit of Victorian era: our brave Earthling (or Big Game Hunter, or Aristocratic Englishman) ends up having to pretend/be the groom of local royalty. Because he is so awesomely superior and attractive, of course. See Prisoner of Zenda and 8 million other titles. But this is Farscape, so this is not the case at all. When John is being chased, it’s never anything good (I keep thinking of the fact that when Farscape finally decided to do the good old ‘hero must have more than one woman’ thing, they had Crichton raped by Grayza. In general, Crichton’s uniqueness brings him nothing but misery.) Here, the ‘other culture’ is far superior to the Earth one in its advancement, it’s powerful and needs no favors from anyone. Moreover, there is no ‘love’ or ‘he is so attractive’ on the part of the ‘natives.’ The reason Crichton works is, precisely, because in this world he is the genetic screw-up so he works as a mate for Katralla whose DNA has been messed with.
Nor is John someone who falls for the exotic Princess, or heroically rushes to the rescue of the kingdom out of noblesse oblige. He fights being married tooth and nail and then ‘unheroically’ surrenders to it when faced with threat of being turned over to Scorpius, and then saves everything only out of desperation and at the end, he is confronted with loss: his inability to kill Scorpius, the fact that he will never see his future child.
You know, I’ve forgotten how sharp the dialogue in Farscape is and how easily is can alternate between heart-breaking and completely funny. I keep thinking of the scene with John and D’Argo where John talks to D’Argo about hope and how “I have hope or I have nothing” and it’s an utterly heartbreaking scene:
(D’Argo pointing out his alternative is brain dissection by Scorpius is so very on brand - there is never an easy out or a good choice and a bad choice, just a bunch of bad choices.)
But anyway, it’s heartbreaking...
But it segues right into the bit of cultural misunderstanding about what ‘best man’ means and it’s now funny.
(Side note - will always love that D’s objection to what he thinks is John is propositioning him is “I am in a relationship already” and not anything else.)
D is a really good friend to John in this. They’ve come a long way since s1. Only a good friend would tolerate being constantly interrupted in his activities with Chiana (I love that John is so freaked by his future he merely registers her there and continues talking).
John needs a friend badly at LATP. He doesn’t know it, but his insanity breakdown has began for real (he tells Aeryn he hears Scorpy in his head and she shrugs it off as paranoia. It must be pretty awful for John to have the one person you fear and hate the most always present). It’s a shudder-inducing scene in retrospect as it would be bad enough if it were PTSD but as is (Aeryn’s asking if 80 years as a statue is better than Scorpius here shows how much she does not yet get just how damaged John got by all of this; she will by the end of s2 but the price will be horrific.)
He is trapped by the Empress (whom I am not a fan of. I understand the necessity, but people who have no problems using other people as pawns are not a fave. And the whole setup is seriously proof as to why monarchy is a bad form of government - they are one bad ruler away from disaster). And then there is Scorpy. I love that John’s reaction to Scorpy is purely visceral, unreasoning. He is terrified and the way he uncontrollably flashbacks to his torture is evident on his face, and he tries to jest and put bravado but it all falls hollow.
He cannot control himself. I don’t think anyone else, not even Crais or Grayza, comes close to eliciting such a reaction out of him. Crais did a number on him physically, Grayza raped his body, and both hunted him assiduously, but Scorpius raped his mind and that’s his most important faculty in the mad world he’s thrust into. (But I love that even with all of that, he still asks Katralla what she wants not just as a last ditch hope of escape but because he does not believe in forcing people.)
And now, I want to discuss my favorite stuff: John and Aeryn. I find myself both very frustrated with Aeryn through these eps (until the end of ep 3) and understanding completely where she comes from. She might deny that her wanting this marriage off is jealousy but Chiana can see it. I think in a way Crichton can too, but he needs her to give him something, anything to indicate reciprocity, that she would one day want to have something with him. The worst is when she says she won’t come to the wedding. She pushes a lot and wants a lot but tries to give nothing in return and yes that is very unfair but she is terrified, being with John would be the first real relationship she would have and she cannot handle the exposure, not yet. She can deal with the sex but she cannot deal with feelings.
Her ambivalence is totally encapsulated in the first scene: she scents her hair so John would notice and tells him so later but when he does, she freaks and pulls away. He leans in for a kiss and she kisses him back but then breaks off. No wonder John is going insane. I always die a little of swoon when they discuss the hair oil and she says that she will tell Zhaan he found her oils pleasing and he responds, both frustrated and trying to convince her desperately: ‘It’s you I find pleasing. Oh boy. She desperately needs to make it all about sex (something she is used to and familiar with). Crichton only wants her for sex, he is a walking horndog on legs etc etc, because she wants to deny any of her own feelings and any of his.
After having seen the entirety of Farscape, I melt a little when she sees Crichton interact with the simulacrum of his child and she realizes that he would want a child, that children are important to him. But also - as I mentioned, this is one child Crichton will never meet and he just has to live with it, there are no clean victories (side note, I loved that John was the one who wanted the emotions and the marriage and the baby and Aeryn had to think long and hard; such delicious reversal.)
P.S. Rygel/Aeryn kiss will never cease being funny. But also extra hilarious in light of his becoming her baby’s surrogate later, heeee.

Any Farscape fans here?
While I'm waiting for the WGA strike to resolve, I've decided to put my #Farscape #fanfiction AU novels back on my The Crais Chronicles website. It's going to take a few weeks. The final chapters of the series of novels need to be rewritten. The doc files have disappeared and the HTML I coded are blank. Woe is me. I know every scene I wrote by heart, but now my style is genre-based and the novels were written in literary style.
When my BFF let me know Claudia Black promoted the website on her Tumblr blog, I knew I had to put it back up.
I will post an update when it's all finished and ready for your Captain Bialar Crais reading pleasure. And yes, everyone shows up, including John, Aeryn, and all the rest. It's a long-form series about Crais getting himself together and becoming--mostly--a decent citizen.

I know the Farscape fandom has pretty much decided that Jeremiah Crichton is the worst episode of the series, but even though I’m not a huge fan of that episode, I think Vitas Mortis is by far the worst episode of the series. There are actually a bunch of episodes that I like less than Jeremiah Crichton. These are just personal taste because I know for a fact that some of these episodes are objectively a lot better than Jeremiah Crichton.

if w359 were to be adapted (and imagine this is a perfect world where adaptations are perfectly true to source and author intention) would you prefer a live-action w CGI or animated? how should Hera be portrayed?
oh god, okay. first i have to get over my gut reaction to the idea of a wolf 359 adaptation, which is... please no, not in any form, never. literally the nightmare scenario for me. but okay, other than that.
the wolf 359 that exists in my mind's eye when i'm listening to the show is, like... live action, physical sets, practical effects including some puppetry (for the plant monster, notably) - and that's definitely influenced by gabriel urbina citing farscape as the main inspiration for the tone of the show. so, in a perfect world, assuming at least the main characters would still be played by the same actors and everything... like that, i guess? i love to see fan animations, and there's the obvious benefit re: voice actors, but i don't think it would work. the realism and mundanity undercut by larger than life scenarios and science fiction nonsense is a necessary contrast to me, and the characters are just... such Real Life People, when i picture them in my mind.
and hera is definitely a big reason why i don't think the show can or should be adapted to any visual medium. when i commission art, my personal design for hera has that blue holographic look because 1) it's important to me to have recognizable visual signifiers, and 2) i want a way to give her a physical presence for artistic purposes while still suggesting some intangibility + distance. but i don't literally think she looks like that. if you are portraying what hera actually looks like, then there are two heras: viewed from the outside, formless and faceless, basically a disembodied voice without any other autonomous parts to express herself with, and the way she sees herself in her own mind and her own memories. from what we can infer, i honestly think the image hera has of herself is just of a regular human woman.
i don't know if you could portray hera in any visual medium, because... you can't show her, you can't make her a hologram or a face on a screen, and you can't make her... more robotic, with more expressive moving parts of the station, etc. because any of those things would imply something different about her than what exists in canon. like, i love the idea that eiffel looks at hera's cameras when he's talking to her, but it's important that something like hera's cameras never comes across as hera, as a physical presence. if that makes sense? the sense of isolation, the way hera feels trapped, at a physical distance from the others, unseen - that's such a central conflict of her character, the very literal way that her struggles are invisible to the others, and how the contrast between her internal vs. externally perceived self is at the heart of a lot of commentary re: identity, disability, etc. that surrounds her. audio is really the only medium where that can be maintained while still keeping hera an equal presence to the others - maybe there's some commentary you could make by deconstructing audience assumptions in a visual medium, but it would be difficult to make it the same.
... and that's not even getting into how music, and radio, and voice, and sound recording are all thematic components of the show!!
#i think the only piece of wolf 359 media i would want#that doesn't already exist (excluding like. doug eiffel comedy bits. i'll accept any number of those.)#would be a live show with enough resources for a little more costuming + lighting + staging. just a bit more flair#but the existing live show isn't designed for that and the time has kind of passed for something like that to feasibly exist. unfortunately#but otherwise... no it's perfect. it's a complete piece of media. i do not need anything more. it already has visuals In My Mind#and that's all i need.#thank you for asking!!#... just the other day my friends were surprised that i picture like. real human people. idk what to tell you. i love eiffel art but#it's art of eiffel. the eiffel who exists in my mind is a real guy#and that guy looks a lot like zach valenti.#asks

Sci Fi Month : The Cold Equations
First film of Sci Fi Month this year and we are doing a Sci Fi Channel original movie ,technically my second time reviewing one on this blog if we count Dog Soldiers ,but that one was a movie bought by the channel .Now for those who arent familiar with the Sci Fi channel or Syfy as its oknown now (For the record I am one of many people who despise the name and I will stubbornly call it the Sci Fi Channel ),started as a haven for Speculative Fiction fans showcasing classic Sci Fi/Fantasy /Horror TV and movies .Nowadays it is associated with some of the most beloved SF TV like Farscape ,Stargate SG1 ,The Expanse and the reboot of Battlestar Galactica .......But its also more infamously known for its TV movies,,,,,,Most of which are bad (Also for stuff like wrestling that has nothing to do with SF but thats a whole can of worms ).Now to be fair not all the Sci Fi Channel original movies are bad some like Dog Soldiers and the Bruce Campbell directed Man With a Screaming Brain are pretty darn great .How does this film Cold Equations shake out ? Wel lets find out
In this 1996 TV Movie ,a pilot John Barton(Bill Campbell ) goes on a mission to deliver medical supplies when he finds a stowaway Lee (Poppy Montgomery ),who hitched a ride to see her brother....Unknowingly endangering the mission by doing this,and Barton is given orders from his supperiors.....Dump the girl into space
So apparently this film is based on a short story ,that has been adapted a few times (Most notably in the 1980's Twilight Zone ).....Now I am curious how a shorter run time treats this tale cause it does feel a bit stretched for 90 minutes .I do like the film though ,its basically a two person play (There are other characters,namely Daniel Roebuck as Bartons buddy but the focus are Barton and Lee ) and I gotta say Bill Campbell and Popy Montgomery give good performances ,in that they aid in the way the film tricks you.See Barton starts out cold and mission first and Lee starts off kind of obnoxious ....But as the story goes the characters shift and the actors really pull off the change.Without spoiling it......This is a tragedy ,like a gut wrenching one.This is the story about the value of life and how sometime...YOu cant save everyone
Now I wont lie,if you are inspired to watch this (You can its on youtube ),and you dont like it......I get it .Pacing is wonky ,Lee can be a bit overbearing and .....It aint an upper .But I think the two lead performances and the underlying story make it work
Hidden gem to me and an example of a good Sci Fi Channel movie
