for 911, shannon diaz. not EVERYONE; i've read some great shannons in fic and a couple of the people i follow get it. i love her. people hate to a see a mother do something for herself/make a choice that centers HER and not her child; they want her to suffer for it. i said what i said.

i don't see as many bad takes as i used to bc i am much pickier about who i follow and the fic i read, and i am much happier for it.

Stating right up front that these are MY OPINIONS. Not fact, not the be all end all, not a condemnation.

7: What character did you start to hate not because of canon but because of how fandom acts about them?

None, really. My issues as far as how fandom can get about a character have always been directed at the fandom, not the character.

9: Worst part of canon.

Evil Cortana. Not as a concept overall, but how they went about it. They took one guy's work, effort, and study, threw it out and just said "Yeah no the Domain cure rampancy but makes AIs evil." like c'mon. It could have been SO much more interesting, there were so many bits of canon that could have been expanded on like the Logic Plague, or how AI fragments work, or the Forerunner who sacrificed herself to fix the Domain and who canon strongly suggests still exists in the Domain as an intelligence. The cheap feel of Halo 5's story compared to the additions made to the gameplay itself (clamber, the butt slam thing I never could get the hang of, etc) and the lootcrate system for multi really showed how Microsoft wanted to copycat existing successful shooters tk make money, at the expense of a not-insigificant number of fans.

13: Worst Blorbofication

That's a good question. I can't figure out if it means 'worst character to get blorbofied' or 'the worst way a character gets blorbofied', and I don't really have an answer to either. I have yet to run into a legit, serious Parangosky stan, and while I sure have seen Some Takes(tm) on a lot of characters, they're all about the same insofar as it's usually a character who is canonically witten in a way that subverts gender roles being blorbofied with headcanons that stuff them SQUARELY into traditional cishet gender roles. Mostly it's Sarah Palmer and Tom Lasky, since they're the ones I tend to read and talk about the most in fandom spaces.

what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how the fandom acts about them?

Already answered with Tim Drake, but honestly, I took a break from writing for Jonathan Crane because it was getting to a point where I was starting to dislike him and I wanted to reverse that.

worst part of fanon

Lord, where do I start? Other than the obvious answers and the various -isms, I think that the thing that grinds my gears the most is how sanitized popular fanon is. The Gotham Rogues are a found family, everyone gets along except for Joker, Nigma is the honorary fourth Siren, Crane gets pumpkin spice lattes with Harley, and everything dark and complex and engaging about them is ignored, and it's just so trite and boring. The Rogues are bad people. They aren't a found family. They don't even really like each other. They don't by and large care about social justice. They are a compelling group of characters and several of them are even sympathetic, but they are villains for a reason. You like the Bad Guys. Own it kiddos.

worst blorboficiation

It's really close between Riddler and Scarecrow, but I'm going to say Scarecrow. At least the Riddler fans are more willing to acknowledge his misdeeds. I've had readers who seem to be stunned and outraged that I would have a character who canonically fear-gassed an entire city behave like a man who would fear-gas an entire city. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I don't think Jonathan Crane is going to be a model boyfriend.

that one line about ramy's bangla being rudimentary made me absolutely sob (i'm bengali) and i wanna talk about why

there's so much to it both contextually with ramy's character as well as historically. contextually because ramy is fluent in 6 languages, an insane number of languages for one person but none of which are his mother tongue. he's described as a performer, one who knows he can't blend in so instead he stands out as a means to escape as much of the racism as he can. he gets lost in it that he almost forgets who he is; this is reflected in his language ability too – he gets so lost in his linguistic academics he just barely remembers the native language of his home place that he adores.

and honestly, you can't even really blame ramy for it at all when it was induced. it's the british who saw urdu, arabic and persian as more valuable than bangla, it's the british that make ramy put on this act so he can literally stay alive. and when you know the historical relevancies between urdu and bangla, it hurts so much that ramy was forced to forget bangla

very brief history context: after the partition, where british india was split into india, pakistan and east pakistan (now bangladesh) bangla was seen as inferior to urdu due to its hindu connections. bengalis experienced so much shit because of this (and bengali muslims are still dealing with the internalised cultural racism today honestly). pakistanis tried to make the official language urdu, even though literally everyone in east pakistan were bengali and spoke bangla, so bengalis fought back against it. we still celebrate that day today (feb 21)

so to have ramy be in this position in the 1830s where urdu was seen as superior to bangla, especially when ramy is a bengali muslim, is just extremely accurate?? and maybe it's bc we don't have much western literature where we talk about this but it's just so nice to have it acknowledged

the bangla language movement didn't happen until around the 1950s, over a century after babel's timeline, but the seeds are always there. while i do think it comes with both this islamic superiority tendency a lot of asians have (arabs i'm looking at you) and britian's imperialistic racism, i just love how it all makes sense

1. the character everyone gets wrong

ONE THOUSAND YEARS JAIL FOR TCW WRITERS for getting that absolutely GOLDEN layup in AotC and then NOT doing jack fuck with Dooku. They looked right at Christopher Lee's deliberately nuanced portrayal in that movie (within the script's and direction's limitations which were indeed very limiting. Have I ever mentioned that George wasn't too good at writing Dooku either?) and did NOTHING. They made him a Saturday evening cartoon guy in the Saturday evening cartoon and I am inconsolable

I cannot get over how they squandered his potential!! And Asajj's by extension, too. And why do I have to cling to CW 03 for any screentime of them both even just existing in the same room? Like genuinely do we ever see them physically next to each other? They're supposed to be master and apprentice bro something went terribly wrong here!!

Also to bend this back to the fandom and to beat a dead bloated decomposing horse: Obi-Wan. Novels have been written about his fanon alter-ego so I'll just say that most people actually write him just fine until any type of relationship emerges! Ppl want to swaddle this spiritual master and veteran shock formation leader in a blanket so bad they gotta nerf him to hell so someone can take loving care of the shadow of his former self lmao

Little kid Grian is out exploring one day when he finds a little kid like him on the beach, but his new friend has a fish tail and can’t walk! So tiny grian, obviously helps his new fishy friend back to the water.

They remained friends for years until the day Grian got sent away from home. When he came back Scar was nowhere to be seen.

Now, Grian is a grown man and a pirate captain of the SSEvo at that, and there is a sea creature sinking every ship that comes near and drowning every man that gets handsy.

Grian's heard a lot of stories about the giant creature: a tail that sparkles deceptively like calm waters, hands with claws longer than your arm or the strength to tear a man in two. It's all a bit far-fetched for Grian's tastes, and if it isn't then he wants nothing to do with the creature.

Fortunately his crew are of a similar opinion, and make sure to keep an ear out for mentions of it, tracking its last known locations. Whatever glory could be gained by hunting the damn thing wouldn't be worth the risk. Grian has far more worthwhile pursuits.

That doesn't stop those less worthwhile pursuits catching up to him. Some of the bounty hunters (paid off by the king to do the work his navy can't - it's almost funny) have caught up with them. He's keeping good control of the situation, but they're outnumbered. The ship has already sustained a major blow, thankfully just above waterline. As good as his crew is, they're overwhelmed.

And then something tears one of the ships in half. Grian can only watch on in awe as sharp razors rise from the ocean, dragging another ship back down with them. He catches a glimpse of wild, twisting brown beneath the waves, hiding the depths of the ocean from view. The final ship splits partially open with a crack that Grian feels in his gut.

Then, just like that, the sea is silent again. Grian's crew carefully put themselves together again, nobody quite sure how to react. They're all holding their breath, waiting for their turn.

Except, instead of down, they're lifted up.

Up, in line with bright green eyes the colour of seaweed, a tanned face with sharp features and scars. Some scars that Grian recognises, in fact.

"Scar?!"

"Grian!" The sea creature cries, cradling Grian's ship tenderly. "There's a hole in your ship, by the way."

Yep. That's... That's definitely Scar alright.

Just cus why not, Ava's reaction to Death without his mask for the first time? Did it need to be removed for a potential injury after Death somehow got incapacitated? Perhaps a situation where Death took it off himself and has forgotten where he placed it before Ava found it. Or did it get knocked off by chance during a fight with something big enough to achieve it like a Stalker swiping his face or something.

Sidenote: The way you draw Death's face behind the mask is just lovely.

8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

i have some...complicated feelings about buck and chris's relationship and how that's portrayed/talked about especially in how it reflects on eddie. i say shit like THATS HIS DAD and THEYVE BEEN COPARENTING FOR YEARS because they HAVE and i think in a lot of ways buck loves chris like he's his and chris CLEARLY sees buck as a parental figure and eddie REPEATEDLY and PURPOSEFULLY puts buck in that role and is comfortable with him in that role.

where i get the ick is when that's pushed into this idea that chris needs buck, that eddie needs buck, in order for their family to be complete. and i don't know that i can articulate this well bc eddie does need buck, and chris needs buck too. but i also think it is so so important to recognize that eddie is a great father (despite a rough start) and that they were (and would continue to be) just fine without him.

i've even struggled with how i've written this relationship in fic, because it can be a tough line to toe.

i suspect that fandom subconciously leans in to this idea that buck can swoop in and save eddie and chris in large part because buck is white and eddie isn't. and i know that i'm icked by it more because of that.

and this is probably related, but i don't think chris would ever start calling buck anything but buck. the idea that a kid needs to call someone dad/mom/whatever for them to be "important" is bullshit. my best friend and i's kids call us by our first names but they also refer to us as their 'other mom'. i've always called my stepdad by the nickname everyone else calls him. buck has been in chris's life a long time; i don't think he's gonna start calling him something different if they finally get together and/or get married.

12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them

taylor and shannon and lucy on 911. fandom loves to hate any woman that's even vaguely connected to one of the boys. i like taylor because she's interesting, and i appreciate seeing a woman who puts herself and her career first. we see men do that all the time. i don't hate taylor for being selfish. i don't want her with buck, but i think their relationship was SO interesting and was important for buck figuring out what he wants.

i LOVE shannon and i have loved shannon from the beginning. people love to hate her and say she's a terrible mother for abandoning her child. but she was a young woman in an impossible position who had NO help from her partner for YEARS. she tried to do what she thought was best for her son, her mother, and herself. eddie wouldn't GIVE her that space so she TOOK it. and good for her, honestly. did it hurt chris that she left? absolutely. would people judge a father as harshly for doing EXACTLY the same thing? absolutely not. shannon loved her kid, she tried to do her best, but she was pushed well past her breaking point (which eddie is largely to blame for - yes i can love my blorbos and admit they have flaws GASP) and everyone had to deal with the fallout.

lucy is hot and badass and interesting and if you watch her kiss with buck and think anything other than 'fuck, that's hot' then we will simply never agree and i'm not going to argue with you. get off her ass, she's incredible and i want her back.

16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)

miscommunication based pining. i can do it for a little bit, but my nightmare is a 100k+ fic rated t tagged slow burn and mutual pining. JUST OPEN YOUR DAMN MOUTH! AAAAAAHHHHHH!! i can do SOME pining bc yearning can be really delicious but when the whole reason 2 people are pining for seven billion words is because nobody will just TALK it makes me insane.

oooh this is tricky bc i am a multishipper to my CORE i want everybody fuckin everybody and falling in love all over the place give it to meeeeee. i feel like the only ship i've ever really been AGAINST is thorki, and that's largely bc of people arguing that it doesn't "count" as incest bc loki was adopted, which pisses me the fuck off. the actual ship i don't really have beef with and i'm sure i would read a fic if someone sent it to me and it was good. idk. it takes a lot for me to be like, ew, absolutely not.

Satan:

He's supposed to be working on his rage issues. But his brothers are making it so hard today, they have been non-stop pestering you. He can see how tired you are behind that bright smile you have plastered on your face.

He's not sure what exactly set him off, maybe it was the backhanded comment from Asmo about how you were spending more time with Satan lately. Or maybe it was just all the little annoyances of the day coming to a head. It doesn't really matter what it was, it's to late to turn back now.

You've seen Satan's rage a couple of times now, and yet you're not used to it, you don't think you ever will be. It demands all of your attention, the ebony vapours rising from his demonic form. He's terrifying, deadly, and entirely beautiful in a scary sort of way. You can't look at anything but him.

His brothers are quick to try and soothe his fury, each of them taking a few steps away from him. Offering him whatever they think he wants. Idiots, he wants them to leave MC alone but instead of realising that they've shielded them from him. As if he'd ever cause MC harm, they are the most important person to him.

He has to admit the act of them all coming to protect you from him is quite endearing. Annoying because they've missed the point entirely but very sweet. He almost wants to forgive them. Almost.

Asmodeus:

Rage rarely gets him what he wants so he doesn't find himself using it very often. He has found that he will happily use it for you though. Not that he'd ever let you see it.

You've told him you find his demon form cute. He wonders if that would still be the case if you'd seen his 'dainty little wings' spattered with blood. Or his 'pretty rose gold hair' unkept and tinged with sweat. His 'long slender fingers' and 'soft delicate hands' ripping out the heart of the man who broke yours. Would you still call him your pretty darling?

He doesn't think so. So he'll never tell you about this secret pastime he's become obsessed with. Killing all those who wrong his sweet, perfect MC.

Hello, I have something kinda.....weird to say the least, if you don't mind reading my thoughts that is?

Basically, a few months ago, I had a strange and surreal dream/nightmare kind of thing. It was about Monty Python. But it was a depressing and tragic alternative universe. A universe where John Cleese and Michael Palin both got assassinated/killed on the day of the "Friday Night, Saturday Morning" Life of Brian debate interview, where a religious extremist who really hated the film Life of Brian with a burning passion took out both John and Michael out of spite. Like, utter spite, ya'know?

It was....horrible to think about..yet it was an interesting experience to think about.

I'm okay now, I'm aware it was JUST only a bad recurring dream. But, it just shivers me to the core to think about what would've happened on that day in that alternative universe. What would the world look like? What the Pythons think about the sudden passing of John and Michael? Just what would've happened on that day......

Wow... That's sounds terrible actually & definitely like a dream I wouldn't want to dream myself...

It really is an extremely chilling thought and like you said, interesting in a horrible way. Don't even know what to say - the fear that must cause to the other Pythons, the sheer tragedy of taking someone's life for simply making a funny little movie, all the beautiful things we would have never gotten (like movies, books, documentaries...) etc. Glad it never happened in reality!
