Say, for the sake of argument, you’re watching a political debate on TV. The conservative candidate has used their opening arguments to dump a truckload of dubious claims on their opponent. You recognize this maneuver: that’s the Gish Gallop! The debater makes point after dubious point, and, if the other debater doesn’t rebut every single one, they will appear to have lost the argument. These points don’t have to be good or hard to disprove, there just has to be a lot of them.
Oh, but what’s this? The liberal candidate seems to have come prepared! That’s new! They succinctly and efficiently dismantle each of their opponent’s arguments, offering a clear rebuttal to every single one. It’s obviously not the first time they’ve heard this particular gallop. So, the conservative’s petard has just fully hoisted them. [“What a hoisting!”] They’ve just lost their own game and have to go on the defensive… right?
Turns out, no! The conservative points to a minor error - maybe the liberal said their program would cost $40 million but is actually estimated to cost 43 - and treats them as an ignorant sap who can’t even count correctly. That is now the subject, everything else has been forgotten, and the liberal is backpedaling.
Wait, you exclaim, how does that work?! The liberal has to rebut each and every point but the conservative takes issue with one and stays in the driver’s seat? Are audiences fooled by this? Are liberals that easily snookered? The answer may shock you!
You’ve just borne witness to The Reverse Gish Gallop, where an entire argument falls apart if any of it can be disputed. These disputes, again, don’t have to be good, they just have to call the airtightness of the argument into question.
A good example is how conservatives obsess over gaffes. (Which, fuckin’... really guys?? [W, Trump]) Some Democrat will be all “conservatives want to shut down post offices as a form of vote suppression; they’re pushing voter ID laws and the post office is where many people get IDs; also we are relying more and more heavily on mail-in voting; they overwhelmingly try to shut down offices in Black and Latine neighborhoods; a lot of services like healthcare and courts still use physical mail by default and there can be serious consequences to getting it late; many elderly people still don’t use email, and, hey, maybe some of them like getting junk mail” “AH BA BA BA THAT’S IT THAT’S YOUR WHOLE LIFE NOW FOR THE REST OF YOUR CAREER YOU’RE THE ASSHOLE WHO SAID OLD PEOPLE LIKE JUNK MAIL.”
Your mistake was assuming that dishonest people abide by the same rules they impose on everyone else. When I was a teenager, some friends of the family would invite me along when they asked my parents to dinner, because I would play with their five-year-old and let the grown-ups chat in peace. And he’d make up games where we’d bat a balloon back and forth or whatever, and change the rules on the fly when it suited him. Because the rule wasn’t actually “you can only touch the balloon once per turn;” the rule was “Andrew wins.”
The purpose of a Gish Gallop is to establish a narrative not through argument or logic but force and volume. Once established, it takes a lot less effort for them to maintain than for you to establish a new one. If they shake confidence in your argument, the audience will often revert to the previous argument, whether or not that one was ever proven. It’s a not about which story is true, it’s about who sets the parameters for all stories going forward; who got there first. This is not a debate; this is a Zerg Rush. Understand: a dishonest argument is Lego - you haven’t dismantled it until every brick is separated. But an honest rebuttal? An honest rebuttal is Jenga.

UNRELIABLE NARRATORS; THE FINAL FINAL

Shen Qingqiu Propaganda:
The entire series is told from his POV and the story seems like a comedy. The side stories from other characters POVs make the story sound like a tragedy. He thought that Luo Binghe hated him and wanted him dead while everyone else knew that Binghe was in love with him.
the whole book he’s using his OWN interpretation of the world to explain literally everything, not knowing that his introduction into the world changed it so fundamentally that his prior knowledge of it is less than useless. he’s like “binghe is being sweet to me because binghe is sweet to people that wronged him before repaying their slight a thousandfold, and he only adds their acceptance of his sweetness to his tally of their sins!! i have to run away forever or he’ll tear my arms and legs off!!!!!!” and binghe in reality is like “wow the love of my life my beloved shizun is scared of me still :( i should act sweet and nonthreatening so he’s not scared of me :(“ and he literally doesn’t have this corrected until the end of the book. but even when that one thing is corrected he still is like “haha okay but these other six things-“ bro……. cucumber bro………….. you homosexualized the world just accept it
He examines the entire reality he's isekai-ed into as if it's still fictional and his inner monologue ignores any "character trait" of the people around him that doesn't fit into his perception of "canon" despite everything he's done to change reality from the canon of the novel he first read. He routinely mislabels his own emotions as well as making heteronormative assumptions about himself and the people around him before he finally realises he's in reciprocated gay love with a man. It's a book that benefits being read twice, so the second time around you can focus on the implications Shen Qingqiu blatantly misses.
Transmigrates into a novel he “hates,” assumes he’s doing a good job pretending to be the character whose body he got stuck in, assumes other characters will stick to their original paths. Lotta assumptions, lots of rationalizing, lots of incredible feats of misunderstanding/misinterpreting things. His internal narration is also hysterical.
Lemony Snicket Propaganda:
(I would like to preface this by saying that Lemony Snicket is the author's pen name, not a real person, and he exists as a character in-universe as well as being the one in-universe who writes the books!) I'd say he's unreliable because he spent time collecting information about the Baudelaire kids and then... wrote books about it. He has no idea what any of their dialogue actually was, what they were thinking, or even the whole plot, he's just doing research into the incidents and then filling in the gaps to make it a story. What ACTUALLY happened to the Baudelaires? Nobody really knows for sure
While the Baudelaire siblings are in potentially life threatening danger, he will randomly start talking about his own life and just leave the siblings hanging. For example, once Count Olaf was threatening to kill Violet, and then Lemony randomly began talking about how he met the love of his life at a costume party. This man CANNOT stay on topic. Usually when a new character is introduced, Lemony tells us right at the start that they’re either going to die or that the Baudelaire siblings will never see them again. Foreshadowing is not subtle in these books. CONSTANTLY emphasizes how miserable he feels while writing these books. At one point he admits that he had to put his pencil down and go cry for a while because of how sad it made him. Once he filled an entire page with nothing but the word “ever” to emphasize how dangerous it is to put forks in electrical outlets. He also repeated a paragraph about deja vu later on in the book to give the reader deja vu.

Fool / Go For It
Eddie is playful, teasing, with all of his friends. It's how he shows affection- with light nudges, light ribbing... it's all done in good faith.
A lot of the teasing he aims at Steve, however, have a sting to them. He cracks a lot of jokes about 'King Steve', about his old friends and his families wealth- all sore spots for Steve.
They don't feel like jokes, even though Steve knows that's all they are.
"I can't just tell him," Steve insists as he, once again, complains about Eddies teasing.
"Yes, you can," Robin says. Her voice is monotone, having repeated her arguments so many times that it's exhausting. "He's your boyfriend. He likes you. If he's upsetting you, he'll want to know."
"But you tease me like he does! All the time!"
"That's different. We're, like, soulmates."
"Rob," Steve groans, flopping his head down so his face is pressed into her bed sheets. His voice is muffled when he continues; "I don't want him to feel like he's second best."
"Steve, for Christs sake, he won't think that! And if he does, he's an idiot."
Lifting his head, he gives her his best puppy-dog eyes. "I can't risk that. I think I might be in love with him."
"That's just more reason to tell him."
He groans, dropping his head again. He always forgets how immune she is to his pleading looks.
"We're seeing him soon," she continues, ignoring his muffled complaints. "You'll tell him then, or I will. And I won't be nice about it, either."
Steve only groans in complaint.
"Come on, dingus," she teases, lightly slapping his shoulder. "You can help me pick out an outfit."
"You never take my advice," he reminds her, getting up to follow her to the closet anyway.
It's almost a routine for them, at this point; she'll pick an outfit, Steve will point out the things wrong with it and, when he makes his own suggestion, she'll point out how horrible his idea would look on her.
Both understand what the other is actually saying- Robin does end up trading the vest that she originally picked out for her black denim jacket, like Steve suggested.
"See?" Steve teases, bumping his shoulder into hers as they head out.
"It's ok, I guess," she ribs back. "You've had worse ideas."
"Ha," he deadpans.
Robin is practically giddy as she climbs in the car. She glances at him, pointedly, when he turns the music up as soon as she says Eddies name. She doesn't fight him on it though.
She knows him well enough, instinctively, to know that he needs the time to himself.
When they pull up, he flings the door open as soon as he can, so she's interrupted when-
"Steve!" Eddie yells in greeting. He jumps up, speedwalking to meet them half way. "You made it!"
"I said we would," Steve grins. The amount of affection they can show, in the schools parking lot, is limited- but Steve can't help but pull Eddie in for a hug. "I always keep my word."
"Unless it's about the pool," Eddie teases, patting his side before turning to his friends.
"Right," Steve forces a laugh.
He hadn't realized that Eddie would remember that- it was so long ago and probably the longest conversation they'd had, pre-Upside Down.
Steve hadn't thought it'd been that bad. He'd actually been trying to look out for Eddie, with how late in the night it was- he'd assumed that he'd been drinking, like everyone else, and going in the pool-
"Steve?" Robin asks, gently shaking him.
"Hm?"
"The pool?"
"Oh, long story. It's... it's an old story, too. It's nothing, really."
"Steve, if he-" Robin starts, hands jumping to her hips.
"Hey," Eddie calls. "Guys, come on, we're gonna set up!"
Steve takes the opportunity, jogging over. "How long does it take to set up?"
Eddie eagerly jumps into a long winded explination, which quickly devolves into explaining rules of the game- things Eddie has already told him, multiple times, but Steve loves how excited he gets.
They finish setting everything up by the time the kids start filtering in- and the door opening knocks Eddie out of his ramble about a certain NPC he's still figuring out.
"You understand any of that?" Grant raises an eyebrow at him.
It's softened with how gentle Eddie is when reaches out to hold his hand, just for a moment.
Mike snorts, loudly.
"Yeah, I did," Steve says.
"Of course you did," Eddie teases, ruffling his hair. "Such a clever big boy. Now!" Eddie claps his hands together, turning to the table.
"Say something," Robin hisses, leaning close.
"I'm trying to listen," Steve whispers back.
She grumbles, but sits back.
It's more fun that he thought it would be, watching the group of them play D&D. It's not as headache inducing as reading, but somehow more fascinating than simply watching a movie.
He groans, almost as loud as the kids, when Eddie announces that they're at a good point to stop for the day.
"That was great," Steve says, siddling up to the table, leaning against the throne Eddies sat on while they all pack up. "I'm starting to get you nerds are so obsessed with this shit."
"What, you wanna sit in on our next game?"
Eddie says it like it's absurd, like it's a joke, but Steve is serious when he replies; "if that's alright with you lot, I'd love to."
"Really?" Eddie leans back, fully turning to him.
Mike scoffs. "He just wants to impress you."
"It was interesting!" Steve defends.
"You probably didn't understand half of what was going on."
"I understand the story. That's, like, the most important part!"
"Of course it it," Eddie gently pats his shoulder. "And I'm sure it'd be fine with everyone here to have an audience, right?"
"Right," Jeff answers. He offers Steve a genuine, friendly, smile.
"On one condition," Robin pipes up. "No more jabs at Steve."
"We're just teasing," Dustin points out. "Steve knows that- don't you, Steve."
"Uh, yeah, I mean-"
"Steve-" Robin tries.
"You do know that we're just joking, right?" Eddie asks, worried. He steps close, hand resting on Steves hip so he can rub circles in his skin. "We don't think any less of you for not knowing D&D. It is just a game."
"Yeah, I know," Steve agrees easily. It's easy to forget why it's a problem when Eddie is being so careful, worried, and affectionate.
And he smiles so wide, almost blindingly. He kisses Steve on the cheek, despite the others complaints, and starts asking about what time is best for their next meeting.
Robin steps up beside him, arms crossed, eyebrow raised.
"What?"
"You're a fool."

Hi, I've see you saying that you're reading a lot of fic lately and I was wondering if you could rec some? I so trust your taste and I think we have so many fandons in common...
Hiya! So first, what I was reading over the summer were some new fandoms that I'm still mulling over. Those ships and fics, I'm not ready to recommend anything for, I'll come back to them later.
As you know, I find it hard to pick out faves and recommend things but coincidentally, some time back, when I hadn't read fics for years, I decided to see which I could easily remember. It’s not close to being an exhaustive list, I just noted down whatever came to me over a few hours, and almost all are pretty old, often from my first go-around in each fandom, but it’s a fair number. I've read other great ones that might not be as easily remembered for any number of reasons, like if I was in a particular frame of mind or if I read too many good ones at once so none really stood out, if I read them in between other things going on in life, etc. These ones slotted into the ole memory bank but that doesn't say anything about those left off.
I'm not sure how many of these are fandoms you're into, but when I'm in a real fic-reading mood I'll often try fandoms I don't know, so hopefully you can still give some of them a shot. I tried to organize by fandom though they're mostly in the order I remembered them, so it's not alphabetical or fave first--though it did end up being pretty chronologically backwards. I was literally going back through the years and I don't think I've read some of the anime ones in like, more than a decade? And while for my own list, I often was like oh, all of that author's fics for this ship and would know what I meant, here I tried to narrow it down to one fic per author, since it can be hard to know where to start, but definitely give their other fics a try if you liked that one.
Added a cut for length. All stories are f/f and complete unless specified. As I go through some of these, let me come back here to add that it’s worth keeping in mind as you read these that they are products of their time, some more than a decade ago. 
Gilmore Girls - Paris/Rory
The Best Of It - by dollsome - 74k words » Canon, fake dating, set after the original series (so ignoring A Year in the Life). To win a point on a talk show, Paris announces she's dating Rory. It's incredibly in voice and matches the show vibe so it's just so funny and sweet and just a plain delight. It's what actually made me create this list, I was idly wondering what else I'd read that brought me this much joy.  
Boston Marriage - by Jae - 5k words » Canon, college years, Paris has a proposal. The first fic for this ship I read, I think? Where I was like, oh, so it’s possible to be that in voice and replicate everything about a show even as distinct as this one. One of the ship’s classics (and being from 2005, just a f/f classic overall?).    
The Unbearable Weirdness of Being - by klynkey - 3k words » Canon, assumed high school years, Rory and Paris get into a debate. After having read the one above, I found this soon after and was like, okay, is everyone able to easily replicate that Gilmore Girls patter? (No.) Another ship classic.
Agents of Shield - Bobbi/Jemma
To Keep My Wolves From Your Door - by pirateygoodness - 41k words » Werewolf AU, so elaborate and for a ship so relatively rare, I’m not sure how this exists but I’m glad it does. It’s got some plot, a sweet romance, smut with feelings, just a rewarding read every time I go back to it, which is pretty often. Given my main audience, I’ll mention there are some flashbacks to Bobbi and her ex husband but that didn’t affect my enjoyment at all.  
Soulmate AUs (just chapter 2) - by alittleunstable - 3k words » Canon, cute little soulmate AU, which I’m always a sucker for. 
Star Trek Voyager - Janeway/Seven of Nine
Where the Dream Takes You - by nejvit - 27k words » Canon, one of the tamer getting together Trek setups, more introspective rather than caused by some alien tomfoolery, but I really like how it handles the very commonly featured J/7 conflict of Janeway dating someone in her crew. It is a bit dense but I found the character and dynamic exploration so insightful and interesting. When I first read J/7 fics years ago (in the late ‘00s), this author’s fics didn’t particularly stand out but when I came back to the fandom more recently, they were among my very favorite.  
The Rod and the Staff - by Trek in Tandem - 13k words » Canon, deals with the aftermath of an existing ep where Janeway went on a mission and ran into trouble. The religious stuff comes across as more the writer playing with the episode’s actual religious references than anything heavy-handed so I found it easily ignorable. Really great, clean prose, one of the writers who always stuck out to me for that.    
Not Just Strip Poker - by Pink Rabbit Productions - 15k words » Canon, a funny, lighter piece that definitely starts out as full comedy, after a misunderstanding, but there’s some deceptively interesting discussion later on in this one too.
Stargate SG-1 - Janet/Sam
Bits and Pieces series - by Pink Rabbit Productions - 278k words, WIP » Canon, this series integrates Sam/Janet into the first season of the show and I don't think it was ever finished, and the last one especially was left on a cliffhanger, but the rest of the “episodes” are worth the read. Also, when I put this down for my own list, I just said "Pink Rabbit's Sam/Janet stuff", because I remember going through all of them at some point, the stuff outside this series was fun too, and if this full incomplete series is too daunting, definitely some of the one-shots might be more fun.
The Devil Wears Prada - Andy/Miranda
Truth and Measure - by Telanu - 272k words » Canon, diverges from the end of the movie as Andy decides to stay with Miranda. What even is there to say about this one? A true f/f classic, has been in the top three of my general f/f recs for more than a decade and still holds up. Just a perfect continuation of the movie, same world, same characters, continuing growth and development of characters and dynamics, a true believable slow burn romance. And the author’s published it without taking down the fic. :)
Facts of Life - Jo/Blair
Ribbon - by Della Street - 15k words » Canon, diverging in the college years. This is the first of her fics I read for this pair and I fell in love with her writing. Back in an era when a lot of authors started off with lots of exposition and setting up the scenario, I was so impressed by how quickly and easily she did her worldbuilding and character development, and how in-voice and and close to the show everyone was. Definitely recommend going through the rest of her Jo/Blair fics.
Birds of Prey (2002) - Barbara/Helena
And Another Thing - by fembuck - 12k words » Canon, a straightforward getting together fic, things come to a head after Helena starts pulling away. After seeing which of the fics I remember best and like most here, I think I really just favor a great execution of a simple premise. And because this is fembuck, whose fic was a load bearing pillar of f/f fandom, there’s a nice balance of humor and angst with the romance.    
An Empirical Question - by harper_m - 30k words » Canon, an accidental fake dating situation spins out into something much more. In a funny coincidence, the same things I said about fembuck apply to harper_m, such a significant contributor to f/f fic over the years (see also this older archive account). This fic is again mostly a well done exploration of the characters and their dynamic if suddenly an explicitly romantic layer was added to canon.
Skins - Effy/Katie
An Imperfection in an Otherwise Perfect Plan - by harper_m - 21k words » WW1 AU, they’re nurses in the army. As with the Mockingnerd werewolf AU above, I’m surprised that for such a rare ship, there’s such a specific (and good) AU, but definitely not complaining. It feels that much nicer to find a true gem in such a tiny collection.    
fate is overgrown - by thememoriesfire - 53k words » Post-series, years later, Katie’s in a rut and stumbles into Effy again. I do find it funny that I have no Glee rec from TMF and instead went for the Skins fic that isn’t even transatlanticism but I really love this one, to the point where there were a couple of months where I just reread it constantly, even downloading my own version to fix formatting and typos. It’s almost slice of life, as Katie and Effy find themselves surprisingly healing together, after their fraught history. 
The Sarah Connor Chronicles - Sarah/Cameron
Resistance - by Anklebones - 120k words, WIP » Canon, diverges from season 2 as Cameron continues to glitch. Like a lot of the good Sarah/Cameron fics, this is a great dissection of AI and sentience and what it means to be human and have free will. I mean, within a great story, not just characters debating. It’s not finished but I really like what’s been written so far.   The author also has a three-part complete fic where Sarah and Cameron are already in a messy thing and then have to confront some things when there’s an attack at school: Just Another day in Paradise… 1 2 3 (19k words).    
No Rest for the Wicked - by InspectorBoxer - 172k words, WIP » Firefly AU, River Tam takes the place of Cameron while Sarah’s a new character to the universe. This is such a fun blend of the two universes and the romance is such a good slow build. As with most of the WIPs I’m linking, there’s enough to really enjoy even if not complete yet.
Once Upon a Time - Emma/Regina
The Secret's in the Telling - by pyrophoric - 250k words » Canon, set pretty early on but where Emma and Regina are at least nominally getting along. Things are set into motion when a mysterious thief shows up and keeps bullying Emma. This is one of my favorite iterations of their dynamic, with long-suffering secretly fond Regina and hapless too-earnest Emma.    
You do not have to walk on your knees - by dollsome - 10k words » Canon, mid-season 2, Regina and Emma learning to get along. As is dollsome’s specialty, a lot of character work and humor. Also would recommend Teenage ... Dream? (12k words), where Regina gets like...kind of emotionally aged down? You’ll see. The premise sounds cracky but again, the character exploration and humor and sweetness. :)
Once Upon a Time - Aurora/Mulan
a story, a tale - by maleficently - 27k words » AU where it’s Maleficent who casts the original curse on Aurora and her true love, not Regina on Snow and Charming. This is so fun because you can see all the similarities and differences in how the story unfolds compared to the show, including flashbacks to the fairy tale world before the curse is cast.    
Object Permanence - by badlance - 18k words » Canon, after Aurora and Phillip have made it to Storybrooke. Aurora’s still furious at Mulan for leaving them to go off with Robin Hood, but suddenly something happens to Mulan and Aurora can’t stop thinking about her. It starts off an interesting look at Aurora and how someone acclimatizes to the real world after Fairy Tale Land so like, therapy, jobs, but it’s quite romantic and sweet in the end.   Also Could Have Been A Year (5k words) and its sequel Bear It Out Even to the Edge (17k words), where Mulan learns the price of staying away from Aurora and gives up everything to make sure Aurora’s okay.
Wicked - Elphie/Glinda
Gelphie Trilogy: 1. Easier Said Than Done 2. Inevitabilities & Eventualities 3. Possibilities and Certainties - by mecelphie - 3.8m words » Rape trigger warning for the very first chapter: Elphie suffers a violent attack and much of the first story is her healing from that, though the other two stories also occasionally bring up the lingering effects on Elphie.     Back when I read it, the first story had some typos, missing punctuation and the like, that might also make it hard for some to get into it, but the world really unfolds into something incredibly rich and rewarding. Note that full series word count, it IS that detailed and extensive a story, almost slice of life, except for the precipitating event and things like homophobia and when Elphie's background is tackled. I haven't actually finished it yet, I pause every once in a while till I have a large chunk of chapters and then reread from the start and get sucked in anew each time.    
The Thrill, Basis Determined - by Ridiculous Mavis - 24k words » Bookverse, just delightful, beautifully written fluff. Everything this writer writes is beautiful. The further down I go on this list the less restraint I feel in linking multiple stories by the same author, so of her other Gelphie fics, I'll also specifically rec The Way Out of Myself (22k words), bookverse bodyswap with Avaric and Elphie where they both learn something about the other and Invitations Under False Pretences (27k words, WIP), bookverse fake dating, it's not marked as complete but it doesn't leave you hanging, if you know what I mean.    
The Week of Ill Repute - by Chudley Cannon - 37k words, WIP » Bookverse again, which, I don't prefer them over musicalverse, it's just worked out that I've remembered (liked?) these fics best. This one I remember from my very first Gelphie fic-reading tour and thinking, wow, this is so good. It never updated after that and I believe it actually does leave you hanging, but I mean, you specifically remember a fic more than 10 years later, it's gotta be on the list, right?
The Bletchley Circle - Millie/Susan
In the Blackout - by RidiculousMavis - 11k words » Canon, set during the Bletchley years, Susan’s just arrived and meets Millie, her flighty and irreverent roommate. A wonderful look at how they start to get along after their personalities and keen minds first clash.    
Clerical Work - by Kivrin - 3k words » Canon, also set during Bletchley, Susan tries to figure out her feelings the way she would a code and then things fall into place in a surprising way. Relatively short but I loved the sharp little characterizations of the main four, including Jean.
Legend of the Seeker - Cara/Kahlan
All the Days - by tcbg77 - 67k words » Post-series, some years after, everything seems to be going well until Richard and Kahlan’s child is kidnapped. Cara, now Richard’s general, sets off with Kahlan to rescue the child. I love the pacing of this one, the length allowing for a full quest and a slow burn, and combined with the well-written action makes it seem like a fantasy story with romance on its own. I basically treat it as exactly that and reread every few years.    
Within My Heart There Is Another Heart - by badlance and pirateygoodness - 26k words » Post-series as well, magic pregnancy. This is pretty in a way that makes my heart ache. i was surprised to see it was 26k words, since it feels so much longer and shorter than that at the same time.
The 100 - Clarke/Lexa

And then of course 307 happened and I moved even farther away from canon, but this fic, its two-line summary, it showed up again and again in rec lists and bookmarks and was so haunting at the time, you know, seasons and people not changing, but finally I caved, and it was as wonderful as it had promised to be.

I don’t know what was going through the author’s mind when they were writing this but given the timing and content, it felt like an extremely low stakes and ultimately fluffy take on these two kids. There’s a lot of the show’s language and customs worked into this school, so that only adds to the impression, but in the end I’ll remember this for being a rewarding sloooowwww burn and really flowery, pretty writing.

Really plays into the effortlessly cool Stud!Lexa thing that was going around at the time, but tbh, she was confident but nice, so I liked it. coeurdastronaute tends to write most chapters as self-contained, so it’s more like a string of connected stories than one long narrative. They’re super prolific and have a lot of stories I liked, I picked Stud as the one I remembered first, and then grabbed a few of the other more memorable ones, all modern AUs: Strip:  1, 2, 3 (10k words) -  Lexa gets a lapdance HSAU (37k words) - College AU, I’m kidding, high school AU Heart: 1, 2, 3, Thanksgiving (30k words) -  Lexa’s a heart transplant patient at the hospital where Clarke works

The author has several popular longer stories going as well, but they’re at various levels of completion and I actually remember really liking of the one-shots here. If interested in the longer ones, the firefighter AU Polis 433 (131k words, WIP) is quite popular, and I think the first one I read was the Olympic AU Individual Medley (95k words, WIP).    
Abby Doesn't Ask - by onlyasdark - 3k words » Canon, some vague point past 307 where Lexa doesn’t die, short vignettes in Abby’s POV. A great example of an external perspective on a ship, because you get deliberately limited glimpses, and in this case especially colored by Abby’s not exactly positive feelings about Lexa, but despite all that, the relationship shines through.

I think what drew me to this one is that the Lexa characterization is more stoic than you often see in modern AUs, especially high school or college. I’ve ended up liking a lot of different takes on her but as much as it’s obviously nigh impossible to recreate the circumstances that created canon Lexa, I do have a particular fondness for that version so I like any fic that approaches it.

Someone’s painting graffiti masterpieces all over the place and as the head of campus police it’s Lexa’s job (she thinks) to catch the culprit. This author is so good at humor, and also can be really poignant at times, like in it's called contraband for a reason (54k words), a jumbled up timeline of the two in prison. I’m told the canon amnesia fic is quite good but I’ve not yet felt emotionally up to it.    
The 300 - by Bucklethorpe - 66k words » Modern AU, Clarke accidentally burns down 300 of Lexa’s trees. This starts off as a bit of a joking take on canon, and is laugh out loud funny the whole way through, but also quite sweet. Definitely a frequent reread.

Despite not being particularly long or having a unique premise, I remember this one because the writing’s so confident and sure of what it wants to be. It feels like a lot of fics--most writing in general, really, tends to flatten itself to not stand out and it was nice to read something so strong.  
To Wear it Like a Crown - by Laney_builds_cathedrals - 42k words, WIP » Teacher/student, kinda, and definitely an age gap, so don’t read if that’s not your thing. Clarke’s the new art therapist at a school for troubled kids and realizes things aren’t quite right. It hasn’t been updated in years but the writing is just gorgeous and I couldn’t leave it off, it’ll always have a place in my lists.

Through time skips, distance, and political crises, they relearn how much they still mean to each other. It’s beautiful and romantic and a great fic for those who wanted their connection from the movie to go further.
Glee - Quinn/Rachel
This Kiss - by poetzproblem - 141k words » Canon, set in s2, starting from a game of spin the bottle. Rachel and Quinn are shaken by their kiss and Quinn especially doubles down on her mean girl persona. Faberry’s had a lot of great fics and I’ve loved so many but I remember thinking while reading this one that this is probably how it would go, if it ever happened. It’s patient and takes its time and is one of my definitive fics for them.     Also the Don’t Blink series (788k words as of 2023-01-13) is this expansive, ever-growing universe set after graduation. I haven’t read it all, but I’ve reread some of the earlier parts many times, for the super rewarding payoff to them realizing their feelings are mutual, and others finding out about them.    
A Family of Trees - by powergrapes - 8k words » Canon, diverging after s1, Quinn keeps Beth. Rachel’s somehow the only one the baby will calm down for and Quinn is reluctantly forced to call on her for help. It’s sweet and funny, my favorite from this writer but they’ve written several great fics, most popular being Head Full of Doubt, Road Full of Promise ( 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 - 60k words), a real Faberry classic, where to cheer up Quinn up after giving up Beth, the club goes on a road trip.     
Summer Mornings (oldest chapters at bottom) - by freshtilapia - 35k words » Canon, post-s1, we follow Rachel every morning of her summer vacation as she sees Quinn pass by on her daily run. Slowly they begin to hang out and bond. I think this was one of my first Faberry fics? I was a late bloomer, it took me a while to see their potential, but I really loved how authors saw their post-s1 dynamic and this was a super cute, endearing version of it.    
Boats in the Sky - by WaveGoodbye - 39k words » Canon, diverging after s3, now both in college, Rachel and Quinn are actually friends. Such good friends that Quinn’s roommate thinks maybe there’s something more. As with Clexa above, it’s so interesting how much character dynamics and fandom attitudes change depending on when a fic is written, because unlike the tension in s1 or s2 fics or Quinn being strung so tight with internalized homophobia, now she’s chill, they’re getting along. I love seeing a fic starting with them as friends, plus, a good chunk of it is external POV, which is a fave.    
Our Brilliantly Tangled Thanksgiving - by Elly-Bells - 4k words » Canon, diverging from s1, Quinn has kept Beth--actually, kind of AU too, because her parents are super nice here as well. But it’s just a super fluffy, super cute funny little fic. The author has a fair number of other fluffy fics of varying length to check out as well.    
Crazy on You -  by roxystyle011 - 82k words » Canon, futurefic written early on, Rachel’s a big celebrity now but gets into trouble and is court ordered to see a therapist, who turns out to be Quinn. This is written so early on I’m not sure if people would consider it the most in-character fic out there, though what is in-character when it comes to Glee, but it’s bold and fun and, as with the Clexa multiverse fic above, I just like when people take big swings with characters. There’s a moment near the end of the fic, when a certain page is turned, that still remains one of my favorite, most memorable reveals in fic to this day.
Dune - Chani/Irulan
Serendipity - by Tamoline - 26k words » Canon divergent, Duke Leto survives and Irulan ends up living in the Atreides household as a guest, while Paul is openly with Chani. When Irulan is called off world to testify, Paul sends Chani as her bodyguard. I’m always so grateful that I picked that year to randomly go through the f/f Yuletide entries because this is such a good fic and I could so easily have missed it completely. It’s got politics, action, enemies to lovers, just this great little novella that happens to be set in the world of Dune. It’s fics like this that have me going through the lesser kudosed out there because it’s a genuine fave.

They have to figure out what happened and why they were brought there and certain feelings come to light. It’s plotty and fun and the reveal of why they were brought to the alt universe is actually pretty great.

The Art of Transformation - by siyentista - 30k words  » Mangaverse, mostly, Soi Fan is injured during a big battle and Yoruichi realizes how much Soi Fan means to her. Despite an action-filled start, it settles into more of a slower character-centric fic, lighter and often comical. Given their canon relationship, it’s refreshing to see the dynamic be more mutual and balanced, and despite the relatively short length, the story feels satisfyingly built up (perhaps because of how much history they already have in canon?).
Brooklyn Nine-Nine - Amy/Rosa
Farm-to-Table, Non-GMO, Responsibly Sourced - by impertinence - 6k words » Canon, going undercover as a couple to bust a maple syrup heist ring. I mean, what more is there to say, except that it’s appropriately funny and cute.

A frequent reread, especially to get to the payoff.

Cosette turns out to be surprisingly fun and as they become friends, Eponine starts to question some things about herself. The premise is already cute with even a but the characterizations and dialogue are so snappy and flow so easily, it’s a great execution of this trope.

They start challenging each other to try songs outside their main genres, much to their fans’ excitement. The soulmate reveal is pretty satisfying as it’s seeded early, and the whole fic is sweet and cute.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries - Gigi/Lydia
get loved, make more - by allthingsholy - 10k words » Post-series, Lydia feels uncomfortable around Gigi, given what they share in common and that everyone knows. In a series of vignettes over time, for each of the family events they meet up at, she slowly gets over it, given they have so many other things in common, including a love of gossip, fashion, and teasing their siblings. It’s a great character exploration and the writing’s so sharp and pretty.     
Searching For a Sound We Hadn't Heard Before - by Care - 13k words » Post-series, again things are uneasy at first but they thaw and the two end up taking a road trip. That’s a trope with a lot of potential, now that I’m thinking about it, the way people get to know each other under those very specific circumstances, and this is a great execution of it.

It’s a great character study at their PTSD but also building on the relationship from canon and sweet and romantic and funny. This was my definitive version of post-game canon, not the other games or the movie or the comics.
Game of Thrones - Margaery/Sansa
Keep the Bouquets series - by Netgirl_y2k - 7k words » Canon diverging...earlyish on, I don’t know the series, but most characters are still alive. Not thinking either’s worthy of Joffrey, the Lannisters arrange a marriage between Sansa and Margaery and they...make it work. Despite being relatively so short, each individual part under 3k words, they’re so effective, these two finding something in that brutal world.
St. Trinian's (2007) - Annabelle/Kelly

Funny and in the vein of the movies, bringing in many of the other former students, and solidifying the Annabelle/Kelly dynamic that seemed so full of potential.

I’m gonna be honest, I haven’t read this in many, many years and definitely haven’t caught up, but even back then when it was a fraction of the size, it was already considered a classic. At this length, I feel like just reading what’s there is a reward in itself.

Just a great fic and one of the few m/f fics I've read more than once.
Star Trek (2009) - Spock/Uhura
The Place Between - by PsiCygni - 309k words » Canon, set before the movie, Uhura needs an advisor for her project and Commander Spock needs a partner while negotiating with a particular alien species. The only answer? Fake dating! Slowwww burn and since I like both the characters in all their forms, an enjoyable fic.
And ya know, however old some of these might be, if you liked them, think about leaving a nice review. I had a saved fic from a site that’d gone down and like, more than 10 years after it was written I sent an email to the address provided and actually got a reply!

So after watching vods and bads stream and clips:
When things calm down or they get a moment.. I NEED for qTubbo and Sunny to actually sit/chill with qPhil Chayanne and Tallulah and TALK. Okay?
I am so sad/upset.. concerned of things in seen within the chats and stream. And I make this clear every character is valid their own feelings and pov but we as the audience are able to see more than one pov. And when we CHOOSE to ignore other povs or closed minded things can/have gotten a bit toxic.

Tubbo chat: they don't care...
Hallo?? Qphil cares for Sunny!!! Her God sibblings including tallulah cares!! Just like any other egg. Yes lullah was worried in the beginning but anyone paying attention can actually see they are closer than they were. They are children and sometimes things need time. Happens. Lullah adore her God father, she was there for his bday and talks to him when can. But just like sunny she can choose who she wants to talk and be around. She has a comfort level just as sunny has one. Chill. When tubbo died it was not clear to Phil, even chat was confused but once Creation came up, he understood it was real. He even apologized because seriously didn't know it was real.
On top of having to deal with his friends death he has to assure his kids have cookies. And at that point the cookies were expensive and he could not afford them. Chayanne had to assure him things would be okay. Fast forward this week he has more than enough and can help any egg if need be. Since Tubbos death qphil has had to assure the kids theyvwould get tubbo back and to not worry of sunny because they will make sure she is taken care of. But note he will not force Sunny to hang around, she is free to what she needs to thrive for now.
The miscommunication between these characters is strong. On purpose or not. Story wise I love it but as viewer I don't know... concerned now?
I just want everyone to be better and happier than the day before on the island. And the audiences to be more understanding and open minded of the ccs/characters and admins

Please never be afraid to send a long ask! I promise that it’s not a bother, and I genuinely enjoy reading people’s analysis/thoughts on both characters and the fandom.
But yeah, I totally agree with you that miscommunication and unintended pov bias are at the core of the issue here! It really sucks to see people who legitimately think that Philza hates Sunny when it just isn’t supported by canon.
Sunny might /feel/ hated or disliked, which makes sense for her pov, but that doesn’t mean qPhilza actually hates her. He’s given no indication that he hates her being around him, his children, or his home. (His only concern about her hanging out has always been the potential safety issue of 1 adult watching 3 eggs.)
So far, qPhilza has always been very direct with his language, so I don’t think there is a reason to assume Philza is secretly lying when he tells Sunny she can stay over or ask for help whenever. He might be stressed about his own capacity to protect and care for three kids, but that doesn’t mean he wants her to be alone.
Everything in canon says that Philza wants the eggs to be safe and happy just like everyone else on the island. Nothing has contradicted that. He might prioritize his own kids the most and sometimes fail to understand some social/emotional situations, but the eggs’ safety is everything to him.
Plus, canon shows again and again that qTubbo trusts qPhilza and loves his godchildren dearly. Tubbo knows that if Sunny really needed help, Philza would do everything in his power to do so. Even if all he can do is direct her to someone more capable of getting resources like bbh. That’s him thinking of and trusting the island’s collective parenting to ensure that the kids have everything they need. Considering he logs on the server an avg of 3 times a week I think that’s fair enough.
I don’t mind conflict between characters, but yeah, fans claiming things that canon doesn’t support can annoy me. Canon pretty much says that Philza /does/ care, but he can do a shit job of showing it. He’s not meeting Sunny’s emotional needs, and I think that can be worked on with communication. There’s truly no reason to assume that qPhilza is maliciously harming Sunny.

I'm also growing extremely attached to the doppelganger story and I've been slowly mapping it out and getting different things down but unfortunately now I have so many different ideas that I'm not sure which ones to keep and which ones to put down for use for something else later 😅 but I've been trying to mentally sit down and iron out exact details, and it's been a tricky process. The exact things I've been getting caught on are 1. How long do you know Miguel/the Spider Society before this all goes down, like is it months or years or what, how close and enmeshed are you with this community. 2. How exactly does YouTwo start stealing your life? What methods do they use to frame you for anything, do they set any schemes up to convince other people you're actually them and they're you, do they steal your costume and leave theirs behind forcing you to wear theirs so you can go out and that's when you're cornered, do you actually let them pretend to be you once or twice and accidentally create their addiction. 3. How is Reader finally betrayed and how quickly is YouTwo exposed, are you gone for a while or do they catch the ruse just in time.
It's definitely my favorite idea I've had for him and the Spider Society in general, but it's splitting off into so many different paths at this point lol. Is there a physical fight, are there any chases, does Reader get put in the Go Home Machine, what if it just sent you elsewhere and they don't realize until you're already gone and they have definitive evidence YT is the fake, do they just assume you're dead, what if you have your bracelet off and you're just glitching and in pain and, just glitch into another dimension instead or whatever. Like. The possibilities are endless with this uh, franchise? Company?. We've got characters like Darwin who constantly evolve and others like Gwenpool and, also, it's fanfictiom why not just have fun
Still stuck on "does Miguel/the SS realize just in time and save you" vs "they don't realize until after you're gone and have to get you back" because they're both tasty in different ways. Like I can see you getting thrown into the Go Home Machine amd you're pissed and terrified and not sure what's going to happen to you and, the machine is powering up and everything is all dramatic and, suddenly it just stops and displays NO DIMENSIONAL MATCH or something similar and everyone is immediately nervous because they almost got rid of the Real You and you're understandably furious. Love the idea of just walking up to Miguel and antagonizing him and verbally berating him and the man just lets you because it's kind of like a punishment he's imposing on himself for what how he's hurt you.
You're just slowly clapping at him, being extremely sarcastic and smiling in a way that says you want to kill him "Woooooow, great job Miguel! Did you do it? Do you save the multiverse? Did you defeat the bad guy?" You're just actively sneering in his face and meanwhile he's just slowly processing what could've happened if the machine had just 'sent you back anyways' so to speak and there you are, "hey, what if the machine just ejected me off into the void since there was nothing there to go back to? Would I be out in space right now, in the dark, choking--" and you make wheezing sounds on purpose because you're angry and trying to hurt him meanwhile he's practically cycling through stages of grief while youre antagonizing him rn. You're in the big room with the go home machine and Miguel and YouTwo and a bunch of other witnesses and your innocence has been proven and they're exposes exposed for everything they framed you for and some of the Spiders are like "oh wow sure glad that's all over and everything can go back to normal and you can go back to hanging out with us and doing your classes again right teach? :)" and you're just like "ahaha, the FUCK I will, at this point I don't want any of you guys, I'm gonna go pack my bags 😒"
YouTwo had started luring Miguel into this sort of trap where he was starting to really put some thought and effort into starting an actual relationship with you and in his eyes he's not just losing you, but also the future and fantasy he's been building up in his head (which definitely involves a baby). Man is having his own dramatic ass anime moment where in his head he's visualizing you holding the hand of a small child and walking away into the sunset as he reaches out "no, come back!", like shit man you'll have to pull something reeeeal special to make up for this
I just. I don't know, i like multiple options and I have to choose one of them! Unless I did the youtwo fic and then did other sort of oneshots 🤔 as a writer it is traaaaagic when you have all these ideas and you decide on a single one and wind up pitching the rest, maybe I should just be unashamed and just repost similar shit all the time, or post bonus chapters to the original fic that might be the same fic again but with changes. Idk. But. Either way I really can't decide between 1. Reader having their bracelet removed and they wind up glitching away and everyone thinks you died but you're chilling with a friend (Hobie? Miguel 2? Shit maybe even Miles as that healing little brother energy, like, i hate it i hate it i hate it But I Understand Peter B's "oh shit did you make me realize i want kids" Moment 😩😩😩 also we stan Peter B in this house. We love a man who accidentally cringefails his life and puts it back together better and happier. Should circle back to him later, i can see him in some "you confide in him bc you trust him and he sells you out for your own good" scenarios. You tell him something like idk dark thoughts you've been having about yourself recently and Miguel knows THAT day) 2. You get revealed as "the real one" with the Go Home Machine 3. You glitch away but then eventually glitch back and they're chasing you down to put the bracelet back on
Idk I just have a lot of thoughts and ideas and my WIPs/drafts keep growing and growing 😩

Sanuso (Usopp is transmasc btw. Important thing here) would have two twin daughters accidentally because they make love right after they see each other in Sabaody and they don't really have the time to think about protection or, you know, have common sense. Then, everything happens without the knowledge of Usopp being pregnant until the Dressrosa group arrives at Zou and Usopp starts feeling sick.
Btw, ignore all the common sense for pregnancy. I will do research but not much because the timeline in OP is so short and everything happens so fast and I want the angst to fit in here. So just assume everything I say is medically accurate.
Law instantly notices something's off and tells both Chopper and Usopp (when they reunite with the others) to join him in a more private place. Honestly, the only reason he's doing this is because he refuses to let one of these idiots get in the way of his mission and alliance, he doesn't want to know anything about romantic dramas or anything. Anyway, he has a talk with a very confused Usopp and asks questions that instantly make Chopper realize what's going on. Law ends up doing a quick check-up and... This is way worse than what he was expecting because he could kind of deal with a pregnant pirate, but a pirate pregnant with twins? No. This is a nightmare. Usopp is still confused and Law wants to get over with this already, so he's like: "Long story short, bad news. For me, mostly. And for you too, depending on how fond you are of kids and how much of a jerk is the person you slept with." And basically, Usopp panics. Sanji is loyal to him and they love each other. They even talked about how much they both wanted kids (they're not at that point yet and they didn't even say anything about having them together. They just said they wanted kids at some point) but he's still extremely worried about what Sanji might say. The thought of not having their kids doesn't even cross his mind until Law says: "I mean... I could just help you get rid of them. Poof! Bye babies. Hi pirating again. Hi Wano. And no words to daddy. Or mommy. Or whatever. How does that sound so we don't have to deal wit-" and Usopp instantly goes defensive about it, realizing that he wants to have them. Or at least talk to Sanji about it first.
Chopper hears everything and is there the whole time and... He doesn't have good news, of course, but he waits until all of them are together to tell them what happened with Sanji. This is the reason why Usopp refuses to go to Whole Cake Island and prefers to join the Wano group instead, knowing that the rescue adventure will be more dangerous and refusing to acknowledge that his boyfriend might get married to somebody else. He just tells Luffy to bring back Sanji for him. Almost begs him. And Luffy, carelessly as ever, accepts in the most optimistic of ways.
Usopp doesn't tell anybody about it and everyone thinks he's just sick. The only one who notices him being weird is Zoro, but when he asks what's wrong, Usopp refuses to tell him the truth and quite obviously lies about what's going on. Zoro just tells him to come to him if he ever needs anyone to talk to, and honestly? Who is he going to talk to? Franky? Robin could be a nice option, actually, but he doesn't really know how to approach the topic and he already knows that her calm, reassuring words won't be enough to calm him down. He needs honesty. Harsh reality. And he knows the answer is Zoro. Plus, they're closer. And Zoro obviously notices something. So Usopp can't keep the secret anymore because he's literally dying of stress as he thinks about Sanji and what's going on in WCI. He ends up telling Zoro and he's like:
Zoro: So what are you going to tell curly? Usopp: I'll just- I don't know. Zoro: Do you want the kids? Usopp: If he- Zoro: But do you? Usopp: I think so. Yes. Even if it looks harder to achieve my dream this way. Lots of pirates have had kids! Zoro: Then that's it. Solved. You're welcome. Usopp: Okay, haha, no. Nope. I'm not having these kids without him. Thank you. Zoro: Your body, your choice, your kids. If he doesn't want them and you do, he'll still have to deal with them. We're on the same crew. Usopp: So that's why I can't have them if he doesn't want them. I can't just-- Burden him with- Zoro: Well, the first mistake here was his. I even know about condoms. Usopp: You're not being very supportive right now, you know? Zoro: Well, you wanted the truth. This is the truth. You can do whatever the fuck you want. And what makes you think he won't want them, again? Usopp: Mm. I dunno. I just have the feeling something bad is going to happen soon. Zoro: He's a pussy and a women-obsessed weirdo but- He loves you. Or at least he looks like he loves you. And he's always annoying the shit out of me saying that once he has kids they're going to be better than mine, so he does want to have them. Even if it's only to piss me off. Usopp: I just- I think I just need to wait until he comes back. He will come back and we will talk about this. Zoro: You don't sound so sure. Usopp: No, I have never been more scared. I am not sure. But- Zoro: But when you're scared, the only thing left for you to do is to trust in Luffy. Usopp: Yeah. Trust in Luffy. If he doesn't come back with my boyfriend I am going to murder him. Zoro: Careful, you're starting to sound like you doubt our captain. Usopp: No. I trust Luffy to do everything he can. But Sanji's stubbornness is just... Too much sometimes.
But Sanji comes back to him. Obviously. And Usopp knows that, despite the bad feeling he's having about all of this, they will be alright. And I don't talk more about this because I have 0 energy right now to continue writing about this now. Maybe another day. I just wanted to post this right now because it's been on my drafts for AGES. So here it is. I will keep talking about this someday I promise.

This was a longer post than I expected, spoilers for Bojack Horseman under the cut but for the TLDR: Bojack Horseman is a much better show than spop since it shows trauma realistically, has better humor, better story, know Bojack is a bad person and he gets called out on it.
On the last season of Bojack and it astonishes me on how much better it is when compared to spop, it's great on it's own and when compared to spop, it's a masterpiece! First of all, it actually shows trauma realistically! One example I would like to use is Penny, she was 17 and saw Bojack like a father figure of sorts, she lived with her family for months and trusted Bojack. Everything seemed fine until she propositioned Bojack, Bojack first does the responsible thing and shuts her down. But then he gets rejected by Charlotte, the girl's mother and Bojack's old friend. He doesn't tell her about what Penny tried to do for some reason, long story short they kiss but Charlotte rejects Bojack due to her having a family and Bojack trying to get her to run away with him. He was in a low place and saw Penny on the boat, she asked him again and he said "Go to bed Penny." it seemed like he rejected her again but we came to a horrifying realization. We hear stuff falling and then see Bojack lying down while Penny is undoing his bowtie. This is one of Bojack's lowest moments and it shows Penny's trauma. One example is when Bojack thought she looked fine, and she was, she healed from the trauma, then Bojack showed up again and all the old wounds opened up again. Another example is with Gina, one of Bojack's girlfriends whom he strangled. She is now traumatized whenever someone touches her neck due to that experience. Another one is Hollyhock, Bojack actually wasn't a shitty person here. His mother laced the coffee she drank with drugs and so she overdosed and got sent to the hospital. Later when she visits Bojack and sees medicine in his house she assumes he is trying to drug her, freaks out, and sends them to the trash disposal. I could go on and on but you get my point. We actually get time to see their trauma. Their trauma isn't just ignored or swept to the side for Bojack. And his trauma was shown realistically too! It's amazing how much better Bojack is compared to spop, I understand they are two very different shows, one being an adult cartoon with 6 seasons and another being a kid cartoon with 5 seasons. Now I will give spop some credit. It showed trauma accurately with Adora and Catra but everyone else's trauma gets ignored. That's why I'm so glad we have Bojack. It can be hard to watch at times but it shows it accurately and it is so important. Second of all, it knows Bojack is a bad person and people call him out on it. Many of Bojack's old friends, Diane, Princess Caroline, and Todd have called him out on his behavior. It also shows that abuse is no excuse for being a horrible person when Todd says "It's not your childhood or the shitty things that happen to you in your career it's you." This may seem small but with spop it tries to make everything Catra did okay because she had trauma when that's not the case. Third of all the humor. Now the humor is...ehhh it's ok. It's not the best thing in the world buttt I did laugh more times than I laughed while watching spop so that's good! Last of all. The story, now the story is really good, many of the bad things Bojack did in his past were brought up, and we see him multiple times try to improve himself but it seems like every time he takes one step foward he takes multiple steps back. This is very realistic to how it is. You can try and try but sometimes you end up spiraling by to where you were before. Bojack Horseman is really important and though it can be hard to watch at times, I'm glad it exists.

A/n: I cannot seem to figure out a good ending for this oneshot, originally it was going to be a battle of stubbornness, with the reading refusing to admit their true feelings as to not get in the way, and Shigaraki refusing to admit his feelings because he just assumed he’d be turned away. Then it was going to be just an angsty mess and I got sad writing it haha. If you’re feeling up to it let me know how you’d end this story properly, I’d love to hear it!

All it took was one touch.
The gentle caress of your hand on his shoulder accompanied by a shiny reassuring smile.
It was honestly pretty pathetic to say the least. It definitely wasn't something that Shigaraki was prepared to deal with.
But suddenly he couldn't stop thinking about you. Every move you made, every off handed gesture— everything— he paid attention to it all. It was almost as if he were in a trance, completely fixated, unable to look away.
You started to haunt his dreams, and while he was never one to shy away from nightmares, he found that the pleasant dreams you accompanied him in were much more horrific.
He had it bad, and it was all your fault.
It was easy to ignore for while— he avoided you— making Dabi or Toga talk to you instead for whatever task you were being assigned. He never answered your questions, he wouldn't even look you in the eyes.
But then you touched him again, one big hug after an accomplished mission. It almost knocked him out cold.
After that he couldn't ignore it anymore, deciding to just say fuck it and see what else there was to learn about you.
He would invite you to play games with him on his shitty old DS he managed to keep with him— he listened to your rambling over your favorite bands new songs— he watched you indulge in your hobbies and even tried them out for himself when you weren't around.
He knew it was a bad idea from the start, getting close to you, letting you give him friendly hugs and pats on the back.
And when you kissed him on the cheek as a thank you after he gave you a stupid little prize he won in a claw machine— he felt it for the very first time.
A cloudy feeling in his lungs that made his throat feel as if it were full of glass, the shards ripping his throat to shreds.
It started off slow— for a while it didn't really impact him at all, just an uncomfortable feeling brewing in his chest. It didn't slow him down, he never had to stop what he was doing— and no one even seemed to notice.
But then the coughing fits started and the petals started coming out— closing his windpipe and ripping through his body in an unforgiving rage.
Funnily enough, they were your favorite color.
To see something you loved so dearly mixed with his own blood— it honestly made him sick. You were no saint, your hands becoming just as dirty as the others as the days moved on and the league progressed— but there was nothing morbid within you. You killed to live, not to take.
By this point everyone knew something was wrong, even if they couldn't pinpoint an exact reason. He did his best to keep the petals out of sight, shoving them in his pocket or decaying them before they could even leave his mouth. The coppery taste became something he couldn't avoid, his teeth growing weak and his skin going pale.
Their oh so fearless leader was now slow, out of breath and coughing up blood seemingly out of nowhere. Really— who could blame them for being so concerned?
Especially you. The one who started it all.
He knew he was too far gone— that his days were sure to be numbered, and every moment you stood by his bedside was another year off of his life. But really— he didn't care at all. Shigaraki was stubborn, even if in the end it would mean his demise.
He was stubborn enough to keep the issue to himself and he was selfish enough to let it eat away at him— so long as you were by his side.
If anyone were to figure out his situation, to put the pieces together and diagnose his ailment from afar—he was sure they'd laugh right in his face. He had so much to do, so much to live for, and yet he allowed himself to stay dying in your arms.
God, he really was pathetic.
He hated himself for it— he wanted to hate you— but the velvety blood soaked petals shoved in his pocket were there to mock him— to tell him it was far too late for that. There was no hope of escaping, even if he had wanted to.
Your hands were always so warm, tender, reminiscent of something he had long since forgotten. You fluffed his pillow every night and brushed his hair every morning. You were no villain— you had to have been an angel dropped from the sky.
As his body grew weaker, your attention towards him doubled in size— If he had known dying was all it took to keep you glued to his side then maybe none of this would've been happening.
Had this happened only a few months earlier he would've had the damn plant removed— he would've forgotten you, buried your body along with your memory. He didn't want this, he didn't need this.
But oh how he wanted you— oh how he needed you.
You were a curse. His own personal fallen angel.

Following the events of fifth year, a new adventure awaits for Norah Lee. Boys, exams, school events, common room parties, and old foes outside of Hogwarts. Even battling pensieve guardians was easier than this.
Main Pair: OC/? Genre: Adventure/Angst/Fluff (it's a little of everything, tbh)
KEEP IN MIND: Characters are aged up (even if the story's got them in sixth year) to make it more appropriate. Time period is leaning towards the modern day so in case you might find anachronisms in the dialogue or references, this is why. This may also be quite a lengthy fic too.
BE WARNED: Social anxiety, mentions of blood and injury, grief, drinking, kissing but nothing more than that, death (this is Hogwarts Legacy, after all)
P.P.S: Ominis has quite a dream, and an emotional rollercoaster ahead for Norah. Listen, I know sectumsempra in the game canon, wouldn't exist until decades later. Keep in mind, this is sooo unrelated to that. Let's just assume that the spell already existed.

Chapter 13
"Ominis Gaunt, we need to talk," Norah said upon entering the Undercroft.
The blonde, who had been dozing off on the couch, sat up, blinking a few times to wake himself up. "What is it?"
"Those letters, those letters you sent me, did you mean what you said in those?" Norah questioned. There was a sense of urgency in her voice, and it made him stand up, sensing her approaching presence.
"What?" He said, seemingly caught off-guard by the question.
Norah took another step closer. "Those letters you sent me, when you were disguising yourself as "Nick," did you mean those things?" She said. "If you did, then please be direct with it. If you didn't, then please be direct with it too."
Ominis' heart was pounding, and somehow, he could also hear her heart racing. "I-I did," He admitted with a sharp exhale. "But I also know that I can't-"
"Can't what?" Norah asked, her expression softening.
"I can't- I can't be with you," Ominis said. "I don't deserve you, my family already despises you, you deserve so much better than to be with someone like me-"
"Don't you dare say that, and don't you dare tell me who I can and cannot love," Norah shot back. "Do you love me?"
"Norah, I-"
"Do you love me?" She repeated.
"Yes!" Ominis blurted out. "I love you! I love you Norah Lee! I have loved you for weeks, months, almost a year! I always have loved you and cared for you, I wrote to Anne asking for advice about you, I summoned you because it's only you that I want, from the moment you came out of the Undercroft for the very first time, I have loved you, and it's been eating away at me every time we catch ourselves alone together. I look for you all the time, I always hear your voice, I've wanted so badly to even just get the chance to hold your hand, be near you in a way that would make me not care about what anyone else has to say, I love you Norah," He was almost pleading, wanting to stress how sincere he was.
Before he could say any more, he felt her arms wrap around his neck, her lips over his own in a deep kiss. He froze for a moment but it didn't take long for him to reciprocate, his arms enveloping her waist.
He savored the moment until he could hear the faint sounds of Sebastian calling him.
Ominis opened his eyes, ignoring the pounding in his heart at the reality. It was all a dream. A dream where he had the courage to say what he felt about her. The warmth of the morning sun hit him, and he felt around for his wand to get ready for their first class. It had been three weeks since the Gryffindor party, and now everyone was looking forward to what might happen when the Hufflepuffs host the next one.

The search for more astronomy tables was put on a halt for the time being because even Amit couldn't handle all the NEWT-level homework they were being set to do. Even Ominis couldn't keep up to the point where he would fall asleep some nights, with his books, quill, and parchment on the floor. All the sixth years seemed to be experiencing the same, being unable to enjoy the Halloween festivities the weeks prior because of it.
Nurse Blainey's sex education lesson didn't seem to help, in between snickers and giggles over having to brew contraceptive potions. It was awkward enough for any of them to try brewing some out in the open, and not even Garreth wanted to risk doing so while in Potions. To make it even more awkward, at least for Sebastian, Ominis, and Amit, Norah allowed them to brew theirs in the Room of Requirement.
"I guess it's no different from what was taught in the muggle school," Norah chuckled as she stirred her cauldron that morning after Potions class. "Muggles had to use these things called condoms, the guy wears one when he's about to do it. Among other things."
Her explanation made Amit nearly spill some of his ingredients over. Sebastian remained curious, while Ominis was trying his hardest not to leave the room out of not wanting them to see how red he had gotten. "Can we-Can we just focus on making the potions?" Amit muttered. "The sooner we finish making these, the sooner we can stop talking about it."
"I disagree," Sebastian said. "I think it's important to talk about it, especially when we're around girls. So we know to be respectful, and take no for an answer. It's only natural, isn't it? How else would we be here had it not been for our parents?"
"Isn't that what we as men should be doing in the first place?" Amit swallowed hard, trying to overcome his embarrassment at what they were talking about.
Norah looked impressed. "My parents had long taught me to be respectful...only when it came to purebloods, that is," Ominis frowned, still intently stirring the mixture in the cauldron in front of him. "Of course, they also believed in arranging marriages, like what they've done to my brother Marvolo."
"Merlin, I heard that's what your pureblood families do," Amit shook his head at the thought.
"Well, yes, but there's no sympathy to be had for them," Ominis shook his head as well. "My brother is glad to uphold such things."
Norah glanced at him. "Then what are Ominis Gaunt's thoughts on marriage?" She asked curiously.
The blonde swallowed hard, remembering the dream he had. "I-I fully believe that marriage is reserved for two people who love each other. If they choose to."
She nodded, smiling to herself as she allowed the contents in her cauldron to brew, putting her dragonhide gloves back on to harvest the venomous tentacula that threatened to loom over Amit. "Garreth said the same thing," She said.
"Weasleys don't exactly hold the same beliefs as my family does, that's why they get called blood-traitors," Ominis pointed out. "So I am not surprised one bit to know that Weasley agrees with me."
Norah smiled. "If there's a Gaunt I like, it would be you, Ominis," She said, glancing at him as she harvested a few sprigs of fluxweed and knotgrass.
The blonde looked taken aback at the sudden comment, while Sebastian's expression fell slightly. Did she mean she liked Ominis too? He couldn't help but think.
They suddenly saw Poppy emerge from the beachy vivarium with Andrew, while Natty emerged from the vivarium that housed the phoenix with Henry. Norah had agreed to allow them to tend to the beasts while they were in there, and by extension allow Henry and Andrew to enter. She wondered if she could put a limit as to how many other people she'd allow inside the room, without wanting to keep other people out.
"Speaking of Garreth," Natty had overheard their conversation as they went down the stairs to join them. "I heard he invited you to go to Hogsmeade with him sometime," She teased. "He's been waiting for the day."
Henry chuckled. "Oh right, he did, didn't he? You two seemed to have a good time at the party, if I recall."
That seemed to make Sebastian frown, while Ominis nearly froze in his place. "Weasley asked you out?" He asked.
Norah stared at them and grinned. "Oh right, yes he did. NEWTs have been doing my head in lately, and we never got around to actually going together. I should probably tell him sometime."
"Isn't he interested in Nellie too?" Sebastian raised a brow. "Why'd he ask Norah out when Nellie was right there?"
Norah noticed Amit shift a little in his place, then glanced at Sebastian. "Are you saying he shouldn't ask me out?"
"Answer faster, answer faster, Sallow," Henry stared at him.
Sebastian stopped, realizing what he just said. "No, of course not-I mean- Yes he should ask you out, but he also fancies Nellie, doesn't he?" He stammered. Fuck.
"Answer better, answer better, Sallow" Andrew spoke.
Norah sighed and shook her head, smiling in amusement at what Henry and Andrew said. "Well, he did. I'm sure he'll tell me if it won't happen anymore. If he wants to ask Nellie out, so be it."
Sebastian's expression fell. "That's not what I meant, Norah," He said.
"I know perfectly well what you meant, Sebastian," She pointed out, taking the dragonhide gloves off and putting it aside. "It's not like I fancy Garreth, so if he prefers to ask Nellie out, who am I to stop him?"
"The Hogwarts heroine?" Amit tried to suggest, only to get nudged by Andrew.
What Sebastian said still left a bitter taste in her mouth, one that she tried her hardest to stay casual about. "Well, I should probably talk to him if that was the case. He's at the viaduct courtyard, isn't he?" She turned to Natty, who nodded. "Then, I'll see you all later," She took her bag and rushed out of the room.
"You idiot," Ominis slapped his arm as they watched the door close behind her. "Must you take this opportunity to put your foot in your mouth?"
Sebastian sighed, feeling like he got the wind knocked out of him. "You all know what I meant by that, she said she knew what I meant," He tried to defend himself.
"Maybe she did, maybe she didn't," Henry shrugged. "But Norah deserves to have that kind of attention, not how people know her just because she's the hero of Hogwarts. If anything, I think she's more than earned a chance."
"But I still said that Garreth should ask her out, didn't I?" Sebastian looked down at his potion brewing and bubbling before him. "I didn't mean anything else by it, I swear, and she said she doesn't fancy Garreth, didn't she?" He studied their expressions. "Nicholas Carrow calls her a mudblood and she doesn't flinch but I say that Garreth should ask Nellie out and I'm the bad guy all of a sudden?"
Ominis smacked the back of his head. Natty and Henry frowned at him. "Merlin, as if you can't get any worse," He said.

Norah made her way into the viaduct courtyard, still thinking about what Sebastian said. Even though she had grown to keep thinking that way, it still hurt when someone else said it. She was confused about her own thoughts, thinking that she ought to pick a side. She still wasn't sure how she felt about Garreth, especially when the person she cared about didn't seem to look in her direction. Or rather look at all.
She spotted the freckly redhead leaning over on the railing, looking at the groups of people hanging around below, on the bridge. He immediately stood up straight upon seeing her as she waved at him, waving back as she joined him.
"NEWTs killing you too?" He chuckled, leaning back over the railing as she did the same.
"Yeah, a little bit, and Nurse Blainey's sex education lessons," Norah chuckled. "So, about Hogsmeade-"
"Yeah?" Garreth replied, a little too eagerly. "We haven't gone yet, but... do you still want to? We don't have to go to Madam Puddifoot's, we can just go somewhere else in Hogsmeade if you prefer."
Norah smiled. "I heard you fancy Nellie Oggspire," She said.
That seemed to make the redhead's cheeks heat up. "Who told you I fancy her?" He asked.
"Sebastian."
"That's-" Garreth tried to say, getting flustered at the reply. "That might be true."
Norah nodded. "So, you never really meant to ask me out at the party, then?"
"I meant to," Garreth said. "I meant it. I just-I was just getting frustrated because Nellie keeps talking about Amit so much. She fancies him, you know."
No wonder Amit reacted the way he did when Sebastian said it, she thought. "I'm guessing Amit knows how she feels about him?"
Garreth nodded. "Yeah, she told him at the party, and apparently, Samantha Dale got annoyed. They went in together, but they didn't go back together-together, if you know what I mean."
"I really must ask Amit about that. He doesn't even tell me how he actually feels about Samantha either. Yet, I don't want to press him for details, I've tried before, but that didn't seem to work," She said, her expression somber. "He must still be confused about it all. Probably overwhelmed with all the romantic attention he's getting."
Garreth shrugged, then glanced at her. "I still meant it, you know, about going to Hogsmeade together sometime. I hope you don't think I'm just using you as a distraction," He said.
"You kind of are," Norah pointed out. "But I guess I can see where you're coming from."
"I'm sorry, Norah," He said.
She shook her head. "Nothing to be sorry about. At least you were honest with me. I respect that."
Garreth looked down, embarrassed and apologetic. "Now I feel like an absolute asshole."
"Have you at least tried to talk to Nellie about how you feel?" Norah asked, trying not to dwell on the realization even further.
"The question is when I have not," He pointed out. "But yet, Nellie is like Amit this, Amit that, she hoped to come with you to look for those astronomy tables. She'd ask Natty, but then she'd find out."
Norah chuckled. "Oh, so no one knows much about Nellie fancying Amit, huh?" and Garreth shook his head.
He sighed, watching a few house quidditch players zoom past the bridge and fly down to the greenhouses. "I can't not say I'm sorry again, Norah. I know you'd make someone really happy, who wouldn't use you like I did."
Norah nudged him. "Don't rub it in, Weasley. Well, I guess our Hogsmeade trip might have to...not happen after all. It's okay," She assured him before he could interject. "However, if Nellie really doesn't see you that way, maybe you should just accept it and move on. Look for someone who does."
She bid him goodbye and walked off, making her way to the kitchens to get something to eat. Sebastian was right after all. It also seemed to confirm what she had thought about herself. Climbing down the stairs, Norah stopped at the portrait of the fruit bowl and tickled the pear until it turned into a doorknob.

Accessing the school kitchens always felt like a pleasant surprise. The house elves were hard at work, cooking and preparing everything. The smells of meat being roasted, bread being baked, and sweets filled the air, and Norah somehow felt comforted at the sight of it all.
"Would miss like something to eat?" One of the house elves asked, coming up behind her.
"As a matter of fact, I would," Norah said with a nod.
"Come, Miss! Come! We've gots food for Miss to eat! Have some! Take as much as you want!" They said, gesturing her to the other counters that had an assortment of soups in tureens along with baskets of bread. One elf almost shoved a bowl in her hands while another ladled some into it, charming a knife to cut through a loaf of bread.
"Thank you thank you," She tried not to spill anything as she sat in the corner to eat, seeing some of the elves crowd around her as if waiting for her to ask for more. "You don't have to watch me eat, it's alright. Please, don't mind me eating here."
"Please help yourself if you want more, or tell us what you like and we'll make it for you," They said before slowly scattering to get back to their kitchen duties.
Norah turned her attention to the meal before her and tucked in, trying to drown out the thoughts that were seeping in. She had just remembered that the Yule Ball was fast approaching, and by now, everyone was likely already in the throes of preparing for it. There went a possible chance at getting a date for the ball. At least she thought it was a chance.
Fully focused on finishing her food, she was starting to feel better, the soup warming her body. That would be enough for another adventure, perhaps looking for Harlow again. It would make for a good distraction, to have something that would occupy a bigger part of her life. Anything to forget what just happened, to forget that reality.
After she had her fill, she stepped out, almost stepping back in when she saw Poppy and Andrew coming down the stairs. She didn't feel like seeing them for now, immediately thinking about the awkward exchange in the room earlier. Once the two of them were out of earshot, she crept out of the kitchens, climbing up the stairs in the hopes of maybe vanishing for now.
"Oi! Norah Lee!" Nicholas Carrow, flanked by his group of blood status supremacists, called out to her.
She sighed. She did not have time for him today. "What do you want, Carrow?" She asked.
"You're looking at the new Crossed Wands winner, so that's Mr. Carrow to you," He said, pointing his wand at her. "Given that a mudblood was last year's Crossed Wands champion, what say you and I have a duel?" He raised a brow at her.
Norah could see everyone stopping to watch them. "Here? Now?"
"What's the matter? Accio wand!" Nicholas summoned her wand from her hand. "So, what do you think? In front of everyone here!" He declared, throwing her wand back to her, and she caught it in time.
"Fine, so be it," Norah said, putting her bag down. "I'm surprised you won Crossed Wands, to be honest."
Her remarks made Nicholas' expression stiffen. "We've got another battle! Between champions!" Lucan Brattleby said excitedly. "The current champion and last year's champion, Nicholas Carrow versus Norah Lee!"
Lucan's announcement seemed to get more people to gather around them. "No one's going to save you this time, mudblood," He said. "Professor Black's one of us, and he won't hesitate to expel a mudblood like you."
"Shut up and duel," Norah said, studying the way he stood. She wanted to get everything over and done with. Whether she won or lost, she didn't care. She also knew Nicholas was making an empty threat, given that everyone else around them knew who started it.
"Expelliarmus!"
Norah was quick to shield herself in time. Nicholas kept going, trying the kinds of spells she remembered were taught to her in fifth year. The most she planned to do was keep defending or shielding herself, knowing that Nicholas would want her to do something, anything, that would make her seem like the bad person.
"Reducto!" Nicholas yelled, and she moved out of the way. "You filthy mudblood."
"So bold of you to keep assuming that I am a muggle-born," Norah muttered, eyes still fixed on him and his movements. She continued to shield herself nonverbally until she cast levioso, followed by a quick depulso and another levioso again, keeping him afloat.
"Oh I do know, Norah Lee. Daughter of squibs, that makes you even less of a witch, undeserving of being in Slytherin house," His voice was dripping with hatred. "Sectumsempra!"
Before Norah could defend herself, she was pushed back, knocked off her feet. "That's enough!" Professor Hecat had appeared, likely having heard of the duel that took place. Norah felt the wind knocked out of her, her face and chest were bleeding as if she had been slashed by an invisible sword.
"You fucking coward!" She heard Garreth yell, and to her surprise, Amit and Leander were holding him back from trying to lunge at Nicholas, who was also being held back by his friends. Nicholas looked victorious. "Can't handle that she was being the bigger person, could you? You fucking coward!"
Her eyes were getting heavy as more blood seemed to gush out of her. "Mr. Carrow, perhaps 50 points from Slytherin and detention until your Christmas break for injuring your fellow students," Professor Hecat declared. "If you utter mudblood once again, I shall report your activities to your parents. But I fear they may be incredibly understanding with what you have tried to do."
"Mudbloods and squib-borns are undeserving to be in Slytherin house," Nicholas sneered. "Much less in Hogwarts."
"Fucking bastard!" She thought she heard Ominis yell before passing out. "Norah? Norah! Norah! Wake up!"

@monthly-challenge 2024 | 1. First Kiss
I used this prompt for my original characters, Nathan and Patience: the story is under the cut.
Word count: 1,003
Being early February, the days were getting dark earlier, though it was still nothing like as early as it would be once daylight savings lost its grip on Victoria. But the light still lingered, gilding the trees and the flushed faces of Patience and Nathan, who were returning from a walk short in distance but made long by Patience’s inexperienced wielding of a new camera. She held it reverently, pausing to photograph a particularly photogenic piece of moss.
“Isn’t it beautiful?” she asked, pulling away from the camera to glance prettily up at him. “Look at the details! Isn’t God good?” The words came awkwardly to her lips, but she meant them with every fibre of her earnest soul. “What would we do without him?”
“We wouldn’t,” said Nathan, and laughed fondly at her.
“You know what I mean!” Her mock outrage did not shake her boyfriend’s smile.
“Of course,” he agreed, and ran one hand through his hair. “Which is why I have to comment on it, because I’m just that sort of fellow. Obnoxiousness all the way down.” Again Nathan smiled.
Patience grinned in answer. “Don’t knock yourself,” she ordered him with a firm nod, and juggled the camera in her hands. “You’re not obnoxious.”
He looked away, suddenly uncomfortable. “It was a joke, Patience.”
“I know. Doesn’t stop me wanting to make sure you don’t really feel that way,” she said, offering him a hesitant smile. He smiled back, the moment fraught with awkwardness.
“And what if I do?” he asked, with energy that made her blink in surprise. “What would you do then?”
“Do you?” she asked straightforwardly, not meeting his eyes.
“Doesn’t everyone?”
Patience smiled at him. “How would I know? I’m autistic, I don’t know everyone.” She paused, noticing a drop of water on a leaf nearby, and took a moment to take a photograph. She hoped it would come out nicely; the setup was good.
“Nobody knows everyone,” he said calmly. “Whether autistic or not.”
She frowned faintly. “What do you mean?”
“I mean that sometimes the way you talk it’s as if non autistic people know everything, when we don’t.”
“Have you considered the possibility that you’re autistic?” she teased.
Nathan did not take the bait. “That’s irrelevant. I don’t know how to say this nicely, Patience—”
“Then say it anyway,” she said, hands tightening slightly around the camera, but otherwise hiding her emotions under a blank stare.
“—but I think sometimes you’re too prone to look at the problems and assume everyone else has it better than you.”
“Um, what?” she said, after a heartbeat of shock had passed. “What? Listen, I thought I was normal-but-broken for way too long. To find out I’m not broken and I’m just autistic was a game changer. I don’t focus on the negatives.” She hung the camera around her neck carefully so she could tap her fingers, one by one, to try and calm down. “I focus on life, and sometimes there are an awful lot of negatives.” Again Patience picked up the camera and took several more photos, firmly ignoring Nathan until she had finished.
He waited, then sighed. “I’m sorry—I said that wrong, but I don’t know how to say it better. My point still stands.”
“Have you considered your point is wrong?” she retorted.
“Have you considered that sometimes you’re too close to any given issue to know what’s the right next step?” he said. It was gentle, but Patience still winced at his words.
“Can we maybe move on from this conversation?” she said, and followed it up with, “I’m not trying to shut it down entirely. I just—I need to think about it and I don’t think getting into a slap-up argument about it would help.”
Nathan frowned. “‘Slap-up’—do you think I would—?” He left the sentence hanging.
“No! It’s an expression. I didn’t mean to imply that at all.”
“Right, I was just checking,” he said, looking relieved. “Meanwhile, the light is fading and we’d better get home before your dad comes out with a baseball bat.”
“A baseball bat? Nathan, honestly. What do you think my dad is like?”
“Well, I’m hardly being serious,” he said, a smile breaking through. “If I thought he would come after me with a baseball bat I’d think more than twice about dating you.”
“If my dad was a baseball bat wielding maniac would you still date me?” she asked winsomely.
A sigh. “If you asked nicely.”
Patience took off the camera, placed it carefully on the ground and leaned towards him. “This is me asking nicely.”
“This looks like you asking for a kiss,” he riposted, then coloured deeply as if he only just realised what he said. “I mean—”
“That works too,” she agreed, the smile draining away and being replaced by seriousness. As he looked down at her, she nodded. “Seriously, Nathan.”
“I thought we’d wait until we were, I don’t know, engaged or married or something,” he said hesitantly. “I thought that was what your family would want.”
“Listen, if you don’t want to of course we don’t have to, I just—I thought maybe—”
“You thought maybe what?”
“I mean, I’d be open to a kiss or two, just to—to see what the hype’s all about.” She wondered if it was possible to go any redder. “If you were—”
“Sure,” he said, and closed the distance between them.
It was weirdly awkward, standing there in the middle of a worn four wheel drive track for their first kiss. Patience had imagined something magical, but this wasn’t magical. There wasn’t anything wrong with it—it was just different. When they stepped apart again they were both smiling.
“Worth the hype?” he asked mischievously.
Patience glanced at the time, uttered an exclamation and picked up her camera hurriedly. “Worth the hype—but Nathan—!”
“Race you back,” he said, and led the chase the whole way home, where they arrived in the last glimmerings of warm summer light.

Nana rant time because I've been putting up with some shit at work and I need to vent! (also, I'm still writing requests, I should have enough to queue up for the week once I finish this last one. And then I'll work on more for the following week. I'm trying to have a system and a schedule)
ANYWAY! So my shitty ex was finally terminated from the job that we both worked at. I was so happy, the drama was gone, I felt like I could breathe again! It was amazing! Sure, I had to work by myself three days in a row, but the actual store manager is the coolest and allows me to wear my headphones so I can just get in my zone and get shit done.
Everything is going great, and then I get this message from my work friend/work mom. Her daughter got hired. Now... Her daughter is only 17, so she isn't much help anyway, but on top of that, I've heard some shit about her daughter from her. The way she described her daughter for the past 8 months, this girl seemed like an absolute nightmare.
Queue me internally panicking because I have to work with this kid.
So she works with her mom first, and obviously her mom is going to say "she did great!" ya know, it's her kid and all, I guess she's gotta hype her up in some way. So I'm like, "okay cool, this kid works. Work mom wouldn't lie to me about that."
SO THEN SUNDAY COMES
And this kid comes over to me and says "Are you *Nana?" and me, being the cheerful, happy, super nice person that I am, I'm like "Yeah, hi! How are you?" And she just hits me with a "my mom says I'm better than you."
Like... Okay?? WTF WAS THAT SHIT?! Whatever, I'm just trying to work and not be stressed.
So, I continue trying to be nice to this girl. I buy her an energy drink because she wants one, I'm just trying to be a good person. I let her come out with me during my smoke break... And then she starts spewing some unnecessary family drama to me... Which was really awkward for me because like... I don't know this girl other than what her mother has told me, and I've heard some stories... Some fucking horror stories about this kid. So I just do the awkward smile and nod thing. I'm just trying to enjoy my cigarette before I start frying.
I get back inside after my mini smoke break that was less peaceful than I wanted it to be because this kid would not shut up. I start frying my donuts, and she just SHITS ON ME. Everything I do, she's just criticizing it to the point where I'm about to just throw down my frying sticks and walk the fuck out. Everything I did I was apparently doing it wrong, even though Sunday was only her third fucking day of working.
On top of criticizing my every move basically, she didn't do shit?? How the fuck is she gonna say that her mom said she's better than me when she didn't fucking do anything??? She's allowed to have a 30 minute break while only working 5 hours because she's a minor, but then she just takes it upon herself to take an HOUR break because she needed more time with her boyfriend I guess.
I end up working until almost 1 in the fucking morning on Sunday because the kid literally didn't do ANYTHING.
So then I got to work by myself monday, happy as hell, living the life, got out of work by 10pm because I'm just good like that. I don't need help.
But then I have to work with her on Tuesday. So I go in early. I go in THREE hours earlier than my regular schedule, because on top of being stuck with the worlds most conniving, manipulative, down-right shitty, brat, I also have to make everything that everyone else is too fucking lazy to make. I try to ignore the kid when she does come in, I already started frying, so she has donuts to decorate already and I just assume she's going to stay in her fucking lane and decorate them since she's "so good" at it. But no... She starts trying to glaze. And in the process of trying to glaze, she shits on the glaze I just made because it's "too thick". Like bitch, it's fresh! It's not watered down. IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE THICK! FUCK OFF AND GET AWAY FROM MY GLAZER!
I tell her to start decorating. She doesn't want to do that yet because the donuts are too hot. Get good, kid. If you were as good as me, you'd be burning your fingerprints off like I do and filling the fucking donuts. But no. She's a whiny little shit face who doesn't wanna fucking do anything but wants to get paid to stand around and act like she's queen shit just because her mom has been working there for 7 years.
Anywho, I take my little cool down break, which is like 7 minutes tops, just the right amount of time to smoke a ciggy and get back in before my next rack of donuts are done. AND THIS BITCH! She has the nerve to ask ME if she can take another hour break like on Sunday because that was "fun". OF COURSE IT WAS FUN! YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO DO FUCKALL AND YOU STILL GOT PAID AND I GOT STUCK WITH THE WORK. So I told her no, that I didn't want to get in trouble for it, and I didn't want her to get in trouble (because I'm still trying to look out for her for some fuck ass reason), and THIS FUCKING BIIIITCH says "well who's gonna catch me?" ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! THERE'S CAMERAS EVERYWHERE!!! Spoiler alert : She did get caught because her ass tried to take another extended break. Eat shit, kiddo.
I was off work tonight, and her mom texts me and says "She did really good tonight, she filled the marshmallow, she came back in from her break at the right time." OF COURSE SHE DID! SHE'S NOT GONNA DO THAT SHIT IN FRONT OF HER OWN MOTHER! THAT DOESN'T CHANGE THE FACT THAT SHE'S A FUCKING BITCH WHEN SHE WORKS WITH ME! I DON'T WANNA WORK WITH HER ANYMORE!
Long story short, I'm about to lose my fucking shit and I still have to work with the worlds laziest, brattiest fucking child and I'm overworked, underappreciated, underpaid, and expected to just put up with constant bullshit by everyone. I can't find a new job fast enough.

Umineko EP5. Tea Party and ???
The tea party starts by discussing what most magical beings are, starting with the Seven Sisters being cheap souvenirs.... they point out the Chiester Sisters are rifles but not that they are Maria's toys, which is kind of interesting. Dlanor tries to stop Bernkastel from defiling their executions and gets shut down because of Bernkastel's authority,
Bernkastel finally mentions Erika as her daughter after lovebombing her for a while and Erika is happy for like, the first time since her introduction... I always feel really bad for Erika in spite of it all.... narration points out she literally starts shaking at being allowed to call herself a witch.

Lambdadelta walks to Battler's corpse and talks about how disappointed she is. Dlanor just did this as well. Battler has disappointed everyone. Lambdadelta and Bernkastel flirt for a bit and Erika reveals the totally real title of Episode 6: Checkmate of the Golden Witch (ignore than in this version you can see all the titles from the main screen)

I will do the ??? as well since the Tea Party was really short. Beato NOW comes to tell Battler he is a liar and disappointed her, like everyone else by this point... the different voice she uses for I am sorry breaks my heart.

We flashback ad get an extended scene of Dlanor Virgilia Batller discussing the mystery genre more broadly, Battler doesn't like Knox commandments because saying shit isn't even worth investigating is arrogant and limits the genre (and also obviously doesn't like how Erika uses them to shut down theories before they are even looked into) but Dlanor talks about how they are there in order to have the trust in the writer in that the mystery is solvable. The discussion about how humans need assurance that what they are solving is solvable resonates with me..... often I assume I shouldn't even try to fix problems or solutions because I assume I am too dumb to solve them anyway,
So, the red is Beatrice giving Battler the tools he needs to solve her heart, and after enough failings and forcing him to try without much success....

As we move forward, Battler begins to realize how everyone has been throwing and throwing hints at him and he has been throwing them away, Battler starts making his final theory, his last attempt. With Knox's 1 he realizes everyone after EP1 must not be the culprit. Uses Knox second to realize that all the magic scenes had a deeper meaning in them.

The game is allowed to continue because of Lambdadelta acknowledges Battler as the new Golden Witch, Lmand might not hand answers but she will help the people truly put in effort and create certainty. Erika feels humiliated by the fact Battler has a higher rank than her now... Battler's role as a Witch is pretty interesting too... he isn't interested in creating a truth so much as in creating enough truths to cast doubt into Erika's theory.... in other words, furthering the Illusion of the Witch. He could deny the Natsuhi theory but that would expose the game and destroy the witch illusion.

Battler starts putting down the foundations for Battler culprit theory.... Battler putting an insane theory first thing after reaching the truth must have gotten some people really confused. Battler immediately destroys everything Erika has been building up to in a single red.

Being autistic is weird as fuck, because you’ve never experienced NOT being autistic. Like autism is unfortunately measured by how not allistic we are. Like it’s directly proportional. It’s not autistic people decided that were different and that difference is wrong. But HOW THE FUCK ARE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW WERE DIFFERENT?
I’ve never been anyone but myself. How am I supposed to know that I don’t feel things the same way as everyone else? How am I supposed to know that I talk weird? Like how should I know that I can’t read social cues, if I’m unable to read social cues? Hello? My inability to understand the task, makes me unable to understand that I’m unable to understand the task!
Like to get an official diagnosis you have to rely on the fact that other people looked at you as a kid and went “that’s weird, it’s not supposed to do that!” And then their “cure” is to just tell you “well stop doing that.” Like gee thanks bud, never thought of that. If I could just turn off my autism you think I wouldn’t have tried by now? You’re the reason my autism is even stigmatised in the first place!
My autism specifically comes with the complete inability to introspect. Like so much of my problems as a kid would have been solved if I just realised “oh, this is an autism thing” instead of being like “oh, well I just must suck at everything, and this is how everyone feels, so why am I the only one having a mental breakdown?”
But also phrases like “everyone’s on the spectrum” are so harmful, cause they just aren’t true!!!! When I was having anxiety attacks as a kid, my mom would always say “well everyone has anxiety.” Which made me think I was just weak, when in reality I have a mental illness that had treatment options and I could have gotten help the whole time, if people stoped minimising disorders.
“We’ll everyone’s a little depressed.” No- no they are not. There are people out there that have never experienced having a brain with mental illness. But my brains always been sick, and when you can only view the world from a sick brain, how would you ever know there were healthy brains out there?
Especially since things like mental illness and learning disabilities or physical disabilities are all hush hush. We aren’t supped to talk about them because it’s “inappropriate” somehow. And then they make you feel crazy when you do talk about it. Like parents who beg their kids to “just be normal” THIS IS MY NORMAL!!! I can’t be like you because I’m not you, and I don’t know how to pretend to be. And I shouldn’t have to!
You don’t suddenly become autistic when someone slaps the label on you. Which is why I always respect self diagnosis, because you know you better than anyone else ever could.
Another story to prove my point. Let’s talk about being LGBT on top of that. My entire life I always thought everyone was Bi. Like I assumed everyone just happened to end up in straight relationships, because how could people not think boys and girls are both pretty? I had no reference to know otherwise.
And after that, I assumed everyone was asexual. I didn’t have a term for it at the time, but I genuinely though everyone was joking about enjoying sex or being horny. Because I’d never experienced those things before, I couldn’t fathom what they were meant to feel like. And if I didn’t feel it as a “normal” human, everyone must just be playing an inside joke I don’t understand right?
But if I just had labels when I was young, I would have understood these things. People who ask “why would you want to diagnose your kid, they’re so young?” Or parents who withhold a diagnosis cause you think if you ignore it, your kid will be “normal” somehow. That’s not how it works. A diagnosis or label can make the world less scary, and often times it can bring you to people who can help you navigate the world. Instead of trying to force you to see it through their eyes.
Autism isn’t dirty. Mental illness isn’t dirty. Disabilities aren’t dirty. And being LGBTQ isn’t dirty!
Children of all ages should have access to knowledge of these things. Because to the people who are part of these groups, labels and information are vital. They’re a huge part of who we are and they aren’t going to go away just because you don’t want to say the words.
Children should have access to knowledge about how their bodies and brains function. This would help kids feel less ostracised and alone, and prevent a lot of pain and trauma in the world.

I'm an aspiring author with autism. It's my dream to trad pub, but I'm anxious about giving up control over my writing. I don't mean revising/implementing feedback— I do that all the time— I mean having the final say about my stories/characters (with a publisher). I know publishers choose your cover, etc, and all authors have to "kill darlings," but I am distressed due to my disability at the idea of losing creative control over my "special interest," the story itself. Am I not cut out for this?
OK so with the caveat that, while I'm 'neuro-spicy', I don't have autism, so I don't want to like... assume anything or therapize at you or whatever? Maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about! Your own personal experience may vary, I don't know you, this is one piece of random advice, etc etc. (I mean I guess this caveat is in place for EVERYONE seeking advice here lol - I'm just a stranger! If what I say helps you, great, if not, ignore it!) -- anyway.

First: I'd say that being preemptively distressed about something that has not happened and may never happen is a good way to stop yourself from pursuing your dreams. And that's a shame -- getting traditionally published is already hard enough without your putting unnecessary worry-roadblocks in front of yourself!
Perhaps it would help you to know that there are A LOT of authors who are somewhere on the autism spectrum or otherwise neurodivergent, including a handful of my own clients. They are traditionally published, and while I'm sure that they run into issues at times... every published author runs into issues at times. I would not say that their issues / problems with publishing are worse than any random neurotypical author's issues / problems with publishing.
Now it could be that they struggle a lot with these same loss-of-control feelings you describe -- but that's not really something anyone has come to me about as a major issue -- so either they AREN'T having those feelings, actually, or else they are managing them in some fashion without my intervention. The point is, they ARE manageable feelings, because if they weren't, I'd surely have heard about it by now!
So in the case of IP books, where the publisher comes up with the ideas and the author is hired just to write the story, it's true that the publisher will pick the cover, the title, everything about it, and the author has no say at all. But... that's not what we are talking about here.
When a publisher is interested in buying your original book, that's because it's YOUR BOOK. If they bought it, it's generally because they like it, and want it to be the best version of itself that it can be. There is a whole team to help make that happen, and pretty much nothing happens without your hard work and input.
-- Editors do give feedback, but you don't have to make edits you don't agree with at all -- you should consider them, but you don't HAVE to accept them. If an editor is pointing out a problem -- maybe there's another way to solve that problem, and that's your job to figure out. You say you are used to and fine with accepting and implementing feedback / revisions -- well that's the part most people struggle with. So if you're already good at that, I suspect you'll be just fine.
-- Copyeditors do polish the manuscript, but again, you will get to literally go through every single comma and comment one-by-one, and accept or decline every suggested change -- if you don't agree, the change doesn't get made.
-- Designers do create covers -- generally speaking, authors aren't book designers, and it's a good thing that there are professionals involved. Authors DO usually get to provide input on what the cover might look like, if they have special requests etc (like "my main character is fat, so if she's on the cover, she should look sturdy and not waifish") -- and there are usually different cover directions to choose from, that the author will have input on -- and even when a cover is near-final, the author can generally ask for tweaks, particularly if they feel that the book is being misrepresented in some way by the cover. (I would strongly suggest you talk to your agent and let THEM handle these conversations, by the way, because they are used to it and can be diplomatic!)
POINT IS: I can't guarantee that you'll love your cover. But I can tell you that nobody wants you to be unhappy with it. Most of the time, you will have some measure of input at least, and even if you don't LOVE it, hopefully you can get to a place where you don't HATE it or anything!
Now, does it happen sometimes that the marketing department or somebody insists on a cover that the author doesn't love? It does happen, but that's not the norm. (Barnes and Noble used to be notorious for this -- they'd say "we won't take this book unless you change the jacket" -- argh! I don't know if that's still the case or not, I think now they just don't take MOST books full stop. double argh.) IF that does happen, hopefully the author can put their faith in the fact that the designers and marketing people have a lot more experience than the author does, and that a direction that the author doesn't necessarily love will end up selling well -- and hopefully that will make the cover grow on you! :-)
Sorry for rambling, here's the condensed version: 1) If you worry yourself out of pursuing your dreams, you are only hurting yourself. 2) Generally speaking, traditionally published authors DO have a lot more say than I think you think they have, and publishers DO want you to be happy with and proud of your finished book. 3) If you get further toward your goal and realize, NOPE, I really can't handle working with other people in the mix, I need to be in charge of every single aspect of publication... you can always indie publish. That's not "failing" or anything, it's just taking a different path than you originally envisioned.
