Legally Blonde Review: Whipped Into Shape by a Sublime Cast
★★★☆☆ Open Air Theatre's #legallyblonde undeniably has a world class cast, but they are dramatically hampered by a production that does not make an effort to reinvent or adapt itself to the unique space
Lucy Moss’ production for Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre clearly demonstrates that even the most phenomenal casting can only take you so far ★★★☆☆ (more…)

Review: Legally Blonde, Open Air Theatre
Review: Legally Blonde, Open Air Theatre Not liking this would be like putting a half loop stitch on china silk
Lucy Moss refreshes and reinvigorates Legally Blonde the musical in iconic style at the Open Air Theatre “If you’re wrong, we look desperate AND homophobic” The Open Air Theatre isn’t a venue one necessarily associates with taking risks, so getting SIX co-creator Lucy Moss to direct a wonderfully diverse and queered-up revival of Legally Blonde feels like an excitingly big swing. Quite how it…

While I liked La'an in Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, I don't really like the retcon of the Eugenics war, but it would have been so funny if they retconned Star Trek's Earth History to have Covid 19 occur in relatively the same time it did for us IRL (like 2019-2023 or whatever). It probably could have tied in the Bell Riots and the Reunification of Ireland as well, since the also occurred in the 2020's.
Although, they probably would have had a "the Romulans engineered the pandemic!" plot which...probably wouldn't have gone over well.

Chapter 2 - X-Manson by Doctor Benway - Annotated By Tsar.
Tumblr media
Many of you are familiar with Hank "The Tank" McCoy and his works. my college @brw is the formost McCoy Scholar. But as you'll see here this AU's version of Hank takes many cues from his Age of Apocalypse self. But he lacks any kind of the fuzzy goodness of your average Hank McCoy.
Previous Post
Next Post
[Shot of a very large man in an expensive suit in a lushly appointed office, possibly that of an investment banker but possibly that of a professor who is very good at getting grants. The man is wearing rimless high-fashion European glasses and a look of extreme urgency. Plainly, this interview is keeping him from something very important. He also has unusually large hands.]
[Caption: Henry McCoy, Trofim Lysenko Professor of Genetics at Northwestern University, Chicago IL]
*I didn't catch this on my first read through, but Trofim Lysenko is a soviet pseudo-scientist who rejected the idea of Medelivian genetics. He was primarily focused on hybridizing crops by grafting them together. It's frankly bizarre that an american institution in a post-soviet world would have such a position, but it's a weird world, isn't it?
HM: I was at the School For Gifted Youngsters for three of the best years of my life.
Int: You chose to attend?
HM: I had a rough time at my first high school, very rough. It was in the Midwest, where any deformities would make one the object of the most vicious ridicule. At the School, I set myself on the path to understanding that which had made me different.
Int: You worked with Charles Xavier on his genetic experiments?
HM: Charles Xavier had a profound intellect. Everything I am today I owe to him. His breakdown and demise were most unfortunate.
Int: You are aware of the controversy surrounding his background?
HM: Overblown, completely overblown. Xavier had a remarkable mind, one that transcended the petty certifications that we so often use to indicate the size of a mind.
Int: Such as your PhD from Princeton?
HM: Such as that, yes. I am certain that Charles Xavier could have easily attained all that I learned at Princeton in a much shorter time, had he not known it already. He was a most remarkable teacher, and I am but a humble fool by comparison.
*Simp.
Int: Were you close to the other students?
HM: As close as my studies would allow. My program of study was quite intensive, and I spent little time with them. I found their company pleasant, when I had time to indulge in it.
Int: Were they happy at the School?
HM: So far as I knew.
Int: What do you think happened to Robert Drake?
HM: I have no idea. He was still there when I left the School and went up to Princeton.
Int: Didn't you stay in touch with the others?
HM: I had limited contact with the Professor. Otherwise, I lost touch with them. I certainly wish I had not, knowing now what happened. If only I had known, I might have been able to prevent it.
[Shot of a much less well-appointed office with no windows but plenty of steam pipes. The place is in a state of almost pure chaos, with books and papers piled on every free surface. A middle aged man who obviously runs marathons is staring a little too keenly into the camera.]
[Caption: Sir Bernard Quatermass, RA Fisher Professor of Eugenics at the London School of Hygiene]
*Bernard Quartermass is another cross-media reference. He is derived from a 1955 british sci-fi serial called "The Quartermass Experiment. Quartermass is however not a Professor of Eugenics but an Aerospace Engineer.
**The London School of Hygiene is somewhat real, The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has had a few reports of eugenicist attitutes and white supremacy stances, though that can be expected from an institution that was founded as Britain was colonizing the world.
BQ: McCoy would sell his own mother to the gypsies to get the Nobel. For that matter, he missed his mother's funeral on account of some experiment he was involved in. Disgusting man. No one with any sense of honour will work with him.
*The only reason why B.Q isn't seen as a monster is because he is being placed in comparrison with this AU's Hank McCoy.
Int: Why is that?
BQ: His early career consisted almost entirely of publishing work weeks or even days ahead of others who had been working on their ideas for decades.
Int: So he had no ideas of his own?
BQ: Oh no, no, no. He did have some very good ideas, completely original ones as far as anyone could tell. He developed the anti-retrovirals that cured that awful venereal disease that the Africans caught from monkeys and that infected all those pederasts in California twenty years back. He has a better understanding of mutant genetics than almost anyone in the field. Of course, he would have, given his connections.
*evil Hank McCoy cured AIDS.
Int: How do you mean?
BQ: His work, and indeed all of our work, depends upon getting large quantities of genetic material in a fresh condition. He's always had and still has the best supplies of it.
Int: This material, it comes from cadavers?
BQ: Cadavers and those on their way to becoming them. It may be something as simple and harmlessly taken as blood, it might be a pituitary gland torn from a technically still-living brain. Brain, kidney, and liver tissue in particular can't be taken ethically until the source has died, and Henry always has had an unusually good supply of brains and kidneys.
*i think Bernard is jealous because he wants to get in on some illegal organ harvesting.
Int: You're suggesting that he may have gotten these by illegal means?
BQ: All I'm saying is, he always had tissue, whenever he needed it. If you want a subject for another documentary, try looking at how much cable traffic there is from his lab to China every time they have one of their anti-corruption campaigns.
[Shot of Dwight Hammer]
DH: The autopsy report on Robert Drake showed that he was missing several organs.
Int: Which ones?
DH: Brain, both kidneys, liver. Maybe more, he was down in that muck over ten years, but the coroner was sure that those ones were missing.
Int: Were any of the other bodies found in the lake missing organs?
DH: Some of them. Usually brains. Only one of the bodies was fully intact, the one that they call the Lady of the Lake. Some of the live ones we arrested were missing parts. Summers was missing a kidney and both eyes.
*two victims in the lake now, six remaining:
Robert Drake
Rogue
Int: What do you think happened to them?
DH: We know what happened to Summer's eyes, but we don't know what happened to his kidney. Maybe they ate it. Just assumed it was some sort of mutant thing.
*i think they took Summers' eyes as a means of keeping him powerless to stop them.
Int: Did you vote for the Kelly Amendment?
DH: Way I see it, the founding fathers set everything up assuming we were all equal. There's no call to make some more equal than others.
Int: So you don't feel that mutants need extra protection?
DH: Hell, no. Some of my best friends are mutants, and they never complained.

Fat shaming
Tumblr media
In theory (mine at least), this is an attempt at moving away from a sense of fat shaming. I suppose "heavy" can only refer to a mass, where "big" may go a number of directions.
Tumblr media
Lard no more. Now we have two professional wrestlers from two different periods of time. They should have tossed in Gorgeous George while they were at it. The rewriters are saying "screw it" once again in revising a Dick Malmgren script. It should be noted that during his heyday, Hulk Hogan was referred to as "Bulk Logan" in the comics, as well such alterations. To the best of my knowledge, nothing of the sort was done for The Rock.

Star Trek SNW finally settles decades-old canon issues (spoiler commentary for S02E03)
Tumblr media
I say spoiler right in the headline, and I mean it. Read no further if you have yet to see Star Trek: Strange New World’s latest episode, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. (The image above is a publicity image and is also in the trailer, so it’s not really a spoiler.)
The TL;DR is: one single line of dialogue fixed nearly 30 years of canon issues. I am not exaggerating. More under the break. And this will be a long one:
To “cross the streams” a moment, it is undeniable canon (not shipping wishful thinking) that not only did the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who have feelings for Clara Oswald, he even considered her not his companion, but his girlfriend. That was made undeniable canon in a couple lines in “Deep Breath” when the Twelfth Doctor said “Clara, I’m not your boyfriend,” Clara replied, “I never thought you were.” and Twelve said “I never said it was your mistake.” That was in stark fact. One line of canon dialogue confirmed what many speculated and the show hinted at. This is separate from what came after, any retcons later writers did, and all that.
Well, one line of dialogue from a guest character in last night’s episode of Strange New Worlds put into canon something I and many others have felt not only about SNW, but the current breed of Trek shows and indeed there were signs of this going back to both Star Trek DS9 and Star Trek Voyager in the 1990s.
The Romulan time agent, Sera, played by Adelaide Kane who some may remember from playing Mary Queen of Scots in Reign, states that the Eugenics war involving Khan was supposed to happen in 1992, but was delayed 30 years due to temporal wars and other interference from the future. (To be precise she’s likely referring to Khan’s birth since he was in his 30s or 40s by the 1990s, the time TOS established the Eugenics Wars took place; here he’s a kid - possibly even a Canadian kid!  The war itself is still some years away.)
That explains a lot. Why since DS9 the Eugenics Wars were redated to the mid-21st century. Why SNW’s pilot episode last year confirmed the Eugenics Wars were part of WW3, not a separate conflict.  Why the Voyager episode where they go back to Earth on 1996 featured no mention of the Eugenics Wars. Why Kirk and everyone else already knows the name Noonien-Singh (even if La’an hadn’t introduced herself by name to “Prime” Kirk at the end, he would have seen her testimony about being Khan’s descendant at Una’s trial. There is no way in this timeline that Kirk, Spock or anyone else would not recognize Khan’s name instantly when the events of Space Seed happen. Heck, even the fact the SNW Enterprise doesn’t match up with the 1960s designs that were also featured in TNG, DS9 and Star Trek: Enterprise. Or even stuff like people like Uhura knowing who T’Pring was years before they were supposedly first introduced to her in “Amok Time”. It even gives wiggle room for the fact this time-travel episode actually breaks canon with the time-travel-based episodes of Picard Season 2! (Laris would have known about Sera and stopped her, right? Sean at TrekCulture had a gripe about this in his Youtube review)
Sera basically admitted that because of people farting around with time and the temporal wars (recall that it was strongly implied in Enterprise that the Romulans were involved if not responsible for that) that the timeline has been changed.
It can’t be denied anymore and it’s such a liberating thing. Now, SNW is free to truly tell reimagined stories (like the retelling of Balance of Terror last season, albeit that was another alternate timeline), to make T’Pring a vital character and build her, to accelerate the Spock-Chapel romance that was only hinted at in TOS. To truly let Paul Wesley develop his own version of Kirk, not to mention Ethan Peck’s Spock and whoever next plays McCoy (you know they will bring him in eventually and if SNW avoids the fate of Prodigy and lasts a few years, they’re going to have to start getting lined up for a new TOS-era series). Hell, the door is now open for Kirk and La’an to establish a “prime-era” romance - imagine a retelling of Space Seed with La’an in the picture (or at least Kirk remembering her).
This will be a hot take for some. But my rebuttal comes from Doctor Who: “Time can be rewritten.” Finally, nearly 30 years after what was thought to be an erroneous dating of the Eugenics Wars in a throwaway line in an episode of DS9 (I believe the producers even said it was a goof back then), and 22 years of people griping about how the prequel series were not lining up with what came before, either esthetically or storyline-wise (Enterprise, Discovery, SNW, and Picard S2 to a degree), we have a firm, canonical explanation. People will still gripe about politics, general quality, casting, whatever, of shows - that’s a separate argument - but at least in terms of canon, this has changed everything. In a good way.
I only wish they hadn’t killed off Sera. I got very strong Sela vibes from her (Sela/Sera? Coincidence?) and I would have liked to see her become a recurring nemesis. Then again, as I just said, time can be rewritten.

Something that I've been processing since Errand of Mercy is that line of Kirk's about being used to the idea of dying. I take it to refer to his experiences on Tarsus IV rather than a willingness to die for Starfleet/some loyalty-to-the-death type deal. Like, he saw a leader make themselves into a dictator in a time of famine and suffering, and said dictator used "personal eugenics" on the people he was meant to aid. Kirk himself was selected to die. Regardless of if Kirk was a young child or teenager when it happened, that event has shaped him (and I can not believe no other writers for the show used it explicitly to develop his character, so now I get to feel like the Pepe Silva It's Always Sunny meme always. It's fine. It's cool. It's fun, even. Thank god for fanfic writers).
Tumblr media
But in the episode before Errand of Mercy, The Devil in the Dark, Kirk says that--as individuals--Spock and himself are expendable. The implication is the chain-of-command based on Kirk's rank as Captain and Spock's rank as First Officer. Should Kirk die, Spock assumes command and etc. If both are killed together, there's a larger ripple effect in the chain and more issues to get positions filled, so Spock and Kirk together as a pair are not expendable. (To say nothing of the larger risk of endangering two lives vs one and Kirk takes calculated risks.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I point this out because in Operation: Annihilate, Kirk doesn't give a single care about the chain-of-command and who is expendable once Spock is made host to one of the creatures.
(As an aside: yes, I know the usual considerations. Inconsistent writing on the show's part. Nobody would want to work under Kirk if he didn't care deeply for the safety of his crew. Etc.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nowhere in Operation: Annihilate does anyone suggest a replacement first officer (despite idk the weirdly vivid memory that it was a conversation Spock and Kirk had in the episode? Did I write my own fanfic while watching the episode and give myself a case of the Mandela effect? I have tried rewatching it and reading transcripts, and I am getting no such scene and I am feeling truly insane, oh my brainworms have gotten worse) after Spock is made a host to the creatures. McCoy comes close in wanting Spock to stay in Sickbay rather than go out to collect a sample, and McCoy also reminds Kirk that Spock is "the best first officer in the fleet" before they put him under enough light to rival the sun and fry his optic nerves, leaving him (temporarily) blind.
(As another aside, while it is one big facepalm that these 3 geniuses in their respective fields failed to conduct their experiment properly--Nurse Chapel, you are due for a promotion!--dare I say that it is still a compelling and entertaining drama? The time-crunch scenario of if Spock can't withhold the pain and insanity anymore, of if Kirk's nephew wakes up, and of when the creatures will successfully leave the planet to infect a new one, so they will gamble and risk Spock's eyesight rather than enact a plan that would kill 1 million people.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's just. Interesting to me. Almost as if Kirk believes that so long as he and Spock are together, regardless of what may injure them, they can do anything.

Still thinking about a Star trek TOS Firefly au. So I'm gonna have fun writing it out.
I love the dynamic between Mal, Zoe, and Wash, so that's certainly becoming the triumvirate. Mal > Jim, Zoe > Spock, Wash > Bones. However Wash's job doesn't make sense for Bones so he's going to change to doctor.
Jim was on Tarsus 4 and suffered the same as in canon, famine leads to who lives lottery and he wasn't chosen but survived anyway. I think that makes perfect sense in the Firefly universe too, but I think unlike in trek Kodos is celebrated by the federation in Firefly for making tough choices and leading in a strong way. So he's not on the run, he's a constant background side threat who's still in power. The face of the federation in this version, but not the head of it. You feel me
After Tarsus, Jim and Bones met and became mates. I think Bones moved to a big fancy planet for his wife and child after a bit. In the meant time, we have Spock!
This got massive, have a readmore
Spock is the result of eugenic experiments (there's no aliens in Firefly 😢) like the serenity thing that the og story is about (but generational eugenics not brain poking)(because I want there to be many others, just also in hiding and with their own political factions and opinions) but his resulted in Vulcan-like stuff. I think he's still got the pointy ears and has excessively strong emotions that he's learnt to hide completely cos he was raised in a medical facility by cold scientists instead of parents and love. There's schools of thought about them, some want to integrate, some want them exterminated, some want them to form their own society. The federation stance is these eugenic things don't exist and if you see one kill it because it officially doesn't exist. So Spock is forced into hiding and hasn't really had a chance to form his broader opinion, cos it's academic anyway. They're all hiding now.
So, Spock's escaped (more on that later) and in hiding. He meets Jim and they click, probably meeting in some silly battle. I reckon Spock has ways to get away from the feds that Jim wants to learn, so Jim pushes for them to team up. They spend some time together either on someone else's ship or on a smaller ship just them two.
After a while that comes to an end and they put together a crew and buy a ship together. They hire Sulu and Chekhov who are a criminal team who need to get off this rock very fast please. Chekhov can fly wonderfully and has enough engineering knowledge that they're like hey we maybe don't need someone in the engine room!
Sulu is a jack of all trades. It takes a few months for them to realise how useful he is, he always has a skill they need and always knows someone who'll play as a contact. Absolutely invaluable.
Eventually the engine breaks beyond Chekhov's skill to fix and they've all heard of Scotty. Everyone knows about Scotty. I think this would make a good episode one.
They work Sulu's contacts and find Scotty who is, lo and behold, having a drink with his mate disgraced Doctor McCoy. Spock, immediate dislike, this guy is a doctor. Jim, holy shit! Bones! Why the fuck aren't you emailing me back!?
Turns out Bones has gotten divorced and threw a bit of a fit in a hospital and can't work on a core planet anymore. He agrees to join the crew and Scotty has some issue that forms most of the episode plot and joins too cos hey, crims gotta keep moving
The ep ends with meeting Uhura, who manages a lot of the residual resistance movement's comms. She's the most political of the bunch, but Jim is absolutely in agreement and so chuffed to meet her even tho he's never been too war-y before. Scotty and Sulu already know her. She takes a kind of Inara role on the ship, but she's not companioning, she's boosted the comms in the shuttle and is continuing this work. It's great for her cos she gets to move around and be hard to catch, and it's great for the ship cos it gives them access to loads of underground people who aren't the hated federation
I also think she helped Spock break out back in the day. I'm not sure if she was part of it and they've met, or if she helped run things so she knows Spock but he doesn't know her. She's gonna be their reason for getting accidentally involved in larger things in the story and why they get more altruistic with their jobs. Spock also pulls them into some of the eugenic stuff
I reckon episode two needs some Spock eugenic stuff to happen so that Bones can solidify himself as on team Spock in action even if he has a go at Spock. Cos everyone else follows Jim's orders and Jim is team Spock, so I think Bones needs a chance to prove it. To great danger to himself ofc.
Repeat characters (like in Firefly they have Badger and Saffron who rock up as major non crew characters) are Chapel and Rand. I think Chapel is still on a core planet as a nurse. I would have her join the crew in season two, to look for her missing husband. But in season one she can be an insider informant for the hospital heist episode, which they do mainly for the medical equipment cos Bones has like nothing to treat people with. And maybe Spock has some additional medical needs that Bones needs to learn (Spock hates this)
Rand is like a bit of Saffron energy but less totally untrustworthy. I think she works them for her benefit but in a way where when they meet again they're like hey Janice you're not allowed on the ship but it's great to see you! Like, maybe she hijacks them to get her somewhere or stows away super inconveniently. Or maybe she just steals from them old school style and has a very all's fair in love and war vibe about it. She just doesn't hold any resentment, so it's hard to resent her
If I were to cast this show I'd cast Bones and Jim and women because I think it needs more women, might as well put them in positions of power, and honestly I think Spock's character with the emotional repression and all would change being cast as a woman whereas the others wouldn't. Spock's character in this is gonna be playing into stereotypes and expectation to stay in hiding, and those change as a woman
I've definitely got less tension on board than Firefly. There's no Jayne equivalent making life hard for everyone, but you could write an arc in for Chekhov like that if you wanted to. He could go from disliking the danger Spock and Uhura bring to absolutely admiring them over like two seasons. Could be interesting, but it's not got much to do with trek really
There's no shipboard romance here either. There could be something cool in the Scotty/Uhura that happened later in trek canon. Maybe they've got romantic history, so when she joins the ship there's tension and they just fall into bed together pretty quickly. But I'd only put that in if it added something else to the story, which it might! I'm not actually writing, I'm brainstorming
And similar to what the did in Firefly I think Spock/Bones makes the most sense. Cos we don't need proof that Spock and Jim understand each other, they're captain and first officer. They have each other's back absolutely. And similarly with Jim and Bones, they'd have old loyalty and friendship to draw on. And I think they also just obviously get along. But Spock and Bones could do with some plot prodding along, so I'd do something like the Simon/Kaylee romance where there's tension and clear desire but they're bad at making it happen. There's too much in the way. But it adds reason for Bones to have Spock's back (cos we're coming at at the start of their friendship, not years into their five years mission) and you can occasionally see Spock relaxing the emotional wall with someone other than Jim as he develops more serious a crush
I want to see! The Niska episode where Jim and Spock get nicked and tortured, and Bones goes in to trade for them back. He can only afford one but true to the Empath ep he just trades himself and volunteers for the torture.
I also want to see a Jaynestown style ep where Scotty or Sulu are the hero. I think probably Scotty. He'd be easy to write as selfish in a he only cares about tech kinda way and then to find that he accidentally did this would be funny. He also likes to keep a low profile generally so it's extra hilarious
Hospital heist ep, with Chapel cameo. I don't think anyone's handing Spock over to the feds, but maybe they get caught and Chekhov tries to trade Spock for their freedom? Not in a pre planned malicious, but more that he just doesn't prioritise Spock's safety over everyone else's. He sees it as a last ditch leverage effort, for the greater good. Could be good drama
Saffron style ep with Rand but she steals from them. I do think that's hilarious, showing them be the mark. And I'd let her win, leave them stranded without whatever thing it is she fleeced and having to find a new magical tech engine bit. But hey she left some booze as an apology and made out with Jim so it's not too bad
I really like Firefly

Episode 23 (Space Seed) it’s kind of funny to me how many of these I’ve made by this point. I think only…62 to go? That seems like accurate math skills.
Let’s just fuckin go:
- “I can’t understand why it always gives you pleasure to see me wrong” already starting this, are we?
- WAIT WHAT isn’t Botany Bay from… eugenics war… khan?? (Thought this was a different episode)
- McCoy and Spock just fight, they’re like two cats who will just attack each other. They just will fight right with Kirk between them.. I feel sorry for whatever poor bastard gets put between them, like take this to another room gentlemen
- “Care to join the landing party, doctor?” “Well if you’re actually giving me a choice-” “I’m not” he’s so salty today
- “Here’s a chance for the historian to do something” lol poor historians
- Who wrote this episode? They’re so sassy today
- “You’re an old fashioned boy, McCoy.” did he know it would rhyme?
- wait… KHAN IS FROM 1990s??? Does he know what a teletubbie is?
- haha Kirk you do not know what you’re unleashing
- What is Spock looking at on that tiny ass screen in his corner of the bridge
- Jim Kirk as a psychologist? Literally just let me suffer
- NONONO DINT GURT MCCOY
- “Well either choke me or cut my throat make up your mind.” No survival instincts, none. What why would you say this Bones?! And then he continues to explain how to kill him “I was just trying to avoid an argument.”
- DO NOT give this man access to your ships blueprints
- Kirk took Spock’s chair so Spock simply sits on the control panel
- MCGIVERS GET OUT OF THERE, do not engage with him
- The way Spock says “whip” with a little extra “whuh”
- Nono Spock is quite right, what the fuck, he was a tyrant don’t admire him
- Can you not leave the bridge from anywhere but the turbo lift? That’s a fire hazard
- “Every person on the bridge will suffocate.” Kirk looks directly at Spock and only Spock
- WHY are you wasting your air on a captains log
- wow historians suck
- “Take Mr Spock next” McCoy looks so worried
- Why would you need this chamber for medical reasons
- Kirk stunt double, I cannot express to you how obvious it looks (cool fight tho)
- That little bell is so stupid, I wouldn’t be able to not laugh
- WAIT they’re letting them go? He’s awful
- McCoy kinda just had to sit there
The credits have a blurry picture of Spock punching Kirk which is… what is that

The Anti-Fascist Themes of X-Men: Age of Apocalypse
One element that I’ve really grown to appreciate about the 90s crossover event X-Men: Age of Apocalypse when I recently re-read the storyline last year in omnibus format, is just how effectively it functions as a complete refutation against fascism as an ideology.
Tumblr media
For some context, the "Age of Apocalypse" (or "AoA") is an alternate-dystopian-future timeline which was accidentally created when Professor Charles Xavier's neurodivergent son Legion (aka, David Haller), went on a misguided quest to make his father's dreams of peaceful human and mutant co-existence a reality by traveling back in time to assassinate Xavier's current archnemesis and former closest friend Magneto (aka, Erik Lehnsherr) before he could initiate his war against humanity. Instead, Legion accidentally killed Xavier when the latter hurled himself between his Erik and Legion's psionic dagger. Xavier's premature death resulted in a disastrous time-paradox where not only was Legion himself erased from the timeline, but Xavier never lived to form the X-Men. Matters were made even worse by the fact that the ancient and evil mutant Apocalypse (aka, En Sabah Nur) took advantage of this opportunity to begin his plans for world domination 20-years ahead of schedule, conquering all of North America and implementing his program of "cleansing" humanity's gene pool of all he considered weak and unfit to live. However, seeing Xavier die to save his life changed Magneto's pessimistic outlook on life, resulting in the Master of Magnetism devoting his life to bring about Xavier's dream of peace and founding his own version of the X-Men who fight against Apocalypse's reign of terror.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In regards to how AoA effectively functions as an anti-fascist text, it is important to discuss how the villain Apocalypse's goals are fundamentally fascistic in nature. En Sabah Nur's primary motivation in the AoA timeline (as well as the main Earth-616 continuity) is promoting of his extremist Social Darwinist philosophy of “survival of the fittest,” in which all normal humans and even fellow mutants with lesser powers are labeled as “unfit” and are condemned to total slaughter. Apocalypse and his followers are essentially framed as being the mutant equivalents to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, since their empire not only actively promote fascist eugenicist beliefs of racial supremacy and genocide, but it is also reflective of fascism's nature as an inherently self-destructive ideology which is ultimately destined to result in the eventual deaths of everyone it impacts.
This ouroboros element of fascism is evident through Apocalypse's enablement of war against the Human High Council overseas in Europe despite his knowledge that they’ll retaliate with a nuclear carpet bombing in self-defense. But Apocalypse is willing to risk the deaths of even himself and his own followers all for the sake of his single-minded goal of determining whether or not the strong will rise from the ashes of those deemed "weak" and "inferior."
Tumblr media
The parallels between Apocalypse's empire and Nazi Germany are made incredibly overt throughout the narrative. In addition to conducting routine mass cullings against those deemed to be “genetically inferior” (including both humans and mutants), Apocalypse's strategy of intentionally breaking the "Kelly Pact" peace-treaty he signed with the Human High Council in order to expand his empire into Europe bears a lot of parallels to how Hitler historically violated the non-aggression pact he signed with Josef Stalin by invading Russia during World War II.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plus, the AoA version of Hank McCoy, aka Dark Beast, conducts barbaric eugenics experiments on mutants that Apocalypse has labeled as “unfit,” and one of En Sabah Nur’s four Horsemen and own son is literally named “Holocaust” (who personally carried out the mass-culling of Japan's entire population of which the X-Man Sunfire was the sole survivor of). Furthermore, another of Apocalypse's Horsemen and his centuries'-long right-hand man is Mister Sinister, whom later during Chris Claremont's run on Excalibur from the early 2000s was revealed to have once been a literal Nazi scientist who worked under Josef Mengele at Auschwitz.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But as much as fascists love to boast about their alleged strength and superiority, in reality said-strength is nothing more than a facade. For all the immense physical power that Apocalypse and his Four Horseman possess, they are ultimately weak in character they were only able to they have to show for their power is mountains upon mountains of corpses of innocent lives that they have stolen. This is evident through Holocaust’s desire to convert the remains of the victims of the latest Culling into an army of Infinites (cloned cybernetic mutant foot-soldiers), something which the X-Man Sabertooth accurately points out as being inherently antithetical to Holocaust’s alleged “superiority.” After all, if he’s so strong and “fit to survive,” then why does he need an army of artificial soldiers bred in a lab in order to boast about said “strength”?
Tumblr media
Heck, even the usually non-serious jokey member of the X-Men, Morph, alludes to the fact that fascist’s illusion of “strength” is only made possible through the demonization of others.
"No matter how strong, no matter how powerful, it always comes down to name calling."
Tumblr media
As Linkara pointed out in the third part of his Secret Empire review, at the end of the day, fascism is a loser ideology that is entirely dependent on the illusion of “strength” whilst simultaneously destroying itself and everything and everyone else around it. Rogue said it best whilst fighting Holocaust:
“How many lives have to be lost, how much blood has to flow, until y’all are satisfied?!”
Tumblr media
In stark contrast to Apocalypse and his Horsemen, Magneto and his X-Men represent not only hope and perseverance in the ongoing fight against fascism, but also true strength. Not the illusion of strength based on power obtained via the deaths of innocents but fighting against oppression and annihilation. As Magneto so eloquently puts it to Apocalypse:
“To fight… is to survive. I and everyone like me who believes you and your Horsemen are wrong… will never stop fighting…”
Tumblr media
Additionally, the AoA version of Magneto serves as an interesting role reversal of his mainstream Earth-616 counterpart wherein instead of becoming a mutant-terrorist Erik has adopted the late Xavier’s dream of striving peaceful mutant and human co-existence. In the original timeline Erik's background as a Holocaust survivor influenced his pessimistic outlook towards human and mutant relationships, prompting him to wage war against humanity to ensure mutants will never suffer through a similar genocide. And plenty of stories since the classic Chris Claremont era have simultaneously portrayed Erik struggling with falling prey to ideologies of mutant supremacy, as he fears that such a path could turn him into someone just like those who once persecuted him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AoA expands upon this element of Magneto's characterization through portraying Erik as actively opposing the ultimate destination in which mutant supremacy ideologies inevitably lead towards. He fights against Apocalypse’s extreme Social Darwinist “survival of the fittest” doctrine that has already murdered millions of normal humans and fellow mutants alike.
Tumblr media
In essence, the AoA version of Magneto is a Jewish Holocaust survivor who grew up to become rebel freedom-fighter striving to achieve Xavier’s dreams of peace by fighting against the mutant equivalents of the Nazis who once persecuted Erik as a child! At the end of the day, AoA is ultimately about the rejection of "might makes right," as the so-called “strong” are ultimately defeated by those they discriminated against for their perceived “weakness." A thesis which is laid bare during the final battle against Apocalypse in X-Men: Omega, wherein Erik delivers one of the most badass refutations against fascism that I've personally ever read:
"'Survival of the fittest' indeed. You preen and posture as if your were the first dictator to discover the concept and stake the world's fate on its nonsense. As a child, I heard the very same babble from a Berlin house painter... a madman whose Aryan race tried to wipe out all it deemed 'dirty' or 'impure.' And do you remember who won the war he began? The 'weak'... who rose in righteous triumph... TO OVERTHROW THE STRONG ONCE AND FOR ALL!"
Tumblr media
Overall, X-Men: Age of Apocalypse's anti-fascist themes and framing is quite honestly the element of the storyline that I’ve grown the most fond of upon re-reading this event crossover after several years!
I originally didn't notice all of this rich subtext when I first read AoA a few years ago, but I recognize it now upon my recent re-read and it has greatly elevated the overall quality of this storyline in my eyes!
