Does anyone in the Tomorrow series ever actually... tell Ellie that what happened in NZ wasn't her fault?? That it's absolutely different to what Lee chose to do, in that she had her choice taken away? That it's not lame or weak or a reflection on her in any way? Because I know the way she's dealing with it is realistic for a lot of people but I also think it's really important that a series aimed at kids acknowledges that it wasn't her fault instead of inadvertently teaching them that it's okay to internalise all this, and by extension that Ellie was right to blame herself. Idk. I just know that if I had read the series through when I first started it at 12, I would have learnt from Ellie, and it's getting hard to read now, thinking that some kids would have.

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #42
My brain has felt like mashed potatoes all day today. I think it's because I'm a bit short on sleep, and also because I probably didn't drink enough water. Oh well. I'll try a little harder not to slip up with the self-care tomorrow.
Following talk therapy today (in which we made it a point to play cards - to give me a lesson in deliberately taking the time to be non-productive, which is a thing I very much struggle with), I tried my very best to actually chill today. I think I managed; I played Terraria with my lovely friend from Germany, and it was very good.
But you know? On days like this, I feel very similar to the Ancient Psychic Tandem War Elephant.
…Wow. I'm sorry. That probably just sounded like word salad to you. Okay, uh… let me see if I can try to explain…
The Ancient Psychic Tandem War Elephant (I'll call him Elly for short) was created as an extremely powerful creature of destruction to be commanded without regard for his own wishes, needs, or sentience.
…I suppose that makes him a lot like you, at least in that regard.
A righteous adventurer named Finn and his friend Jake were having a rough time, and so Finn got it in his head to wish for Elly's help. And Elly did help, but Finn didn't want a slave. I don't think Elly understood this very well because he was so used to being an extension of someone else's will instead of having his own. So Elly ends up sitting idle in Finn's treasure room, purposeless because Finn has no interest in commanding him to destroy things. Here:
youtube
Pay no attention to the coin or the fact that Finn and Jake are about to spend it. Instead pay attention to the notion that, despite the fact that being out of the money room is no fault of Elly's, he still said, "I'm sorry, master; you told me to stay inside the money room, but now I am outside. What is your punishment, master?"
…This is something I understand on a very deep level. And I have a funny feeling that you do too, don't you? I'm sorry if you know what it is. But at the same time, if you do know what it is, then I'm not sorry that I also know what it is, because then that means you're not alone, and neither am I.
In any case, the next thing that struck me was Elly's very literal, reluctantly-going-through-the-motions type of acquiescence to Finn's non-desire of a slave - as expressed with his very confused, "I continue to chill," near the end of the video.
And… I feel that in my bones, because I know Elly's not really "chilling". Elly feels confused and as though he has lost his purpose. He does not understand a world in which he is not treated like an object.
Later, Finn asks for Elly's help against a powerful opponent (Darren). Elly topples this foe easily with Finn's help, and knocks the person commanding this opponent (Maja) into a coma:
youtube
From there, Elly goes into a bit of an existential crisis:
youtube
And you know? Given my upbringing and the way that I was treated for such a long time, this kind of existential confusion is also something I understand well. When I first began to live with my husband, it was extremely difficult for me to adjust to the notion that he wanted a PERSON - not a slave, a toy, a tool, a piece of furniture, or an extension of his own will to command, to control, and to punish when I get it wrong. He actually cared about what I was thinking, feeling, wanting, and needing, and not just about what I could do for him. I was VERY unaccustomed to being treated as though my mind or my state of being mattered, and the uncertainty of what I was supposed to do or who I was supposed to be was incredibly painful and frightening at first. Elly flies off into the distance, bearing a kind of discomfort that used to be all too familiar to me.
But then Elly spent some time actually looking at the world around him, instead of focusing on blindly obeying whomever he feels he is supposed to be loyal to, and he seems to realize, if a little slowly, that he has a place in this world, even without needing to be "useful" to someone else:
youtube
How do you light a candle without a match, indeed? If a candle doesn't have a match, what purpose does it serve? This is further explained in this video, and it shows Elly making a decision to return to Maja; he decides that he is the master of his own fate, and decides to act upon his own values, and to be the match to his own candle:
youtube
This all ties back, of course, to the Independent Together video I showed you before, from Steven Universe. "What do I want to be? I'm the master of me…" as a phrase, somehow manages to be both empowering and terrifying at the exact same time.
youtube
I am learning how to be the match to my own candle; it is why I will keep saying "I continue to chill" until I can actually mean it for real. The world I inhabit now indeed has no place for the "ancient ways" that I learned in my past, and so I will adjust, because I am a sentient being who is capable of unlearning and relearning.
Those scientists might have created you with a particular purpose in mind. You might have been trained viciously and brutally honed into a weapon. You might have been trained to give up your autonomy and your authentic needs and desires in service to people who never really cared about you. But Sephiroth, at the end of the day, the only one who gets to decide what you will do… is you.
So will you rise to the challenge of being a match to your own candle? Will you rise up into being the master of you? You longed for a normal life. You longed for friends familial relationships. You longed for fun and for laughter. You longed for pumpkin soup. You longed for so many things. You longed for such wholesome things.
What if I told you that all it takes for you to have the things you longed for is to stop hiding your needs, feelings, wishes, thoughts, and genuine voice from others? What if I told you that you don't have to pretend to be someone you're not, just because a bunch of people who didn't care about you as much as they cared about what you could do for them fed you a really stupid definition of what "good" is supposed to look like, in service to their own shitty agenda? What if I told you that all you have to do is stop denying your own humanity and innermost nature, in favor of being the kind, loving, and gentle individual you always were?
Sephiroth, you're a PERSON, not a monster, not a tool, and not a war machine, no matter what they did to you, and no matter what you've done in the past. You're a living, breathing, sentient human being. You are a warm, soft, and squishy mammal (many of the best things are!), so please be mindful to treat yourself as such. Don't go the way of Darren; use your incredible brain to be like Elly and adjust. You can do it if you try.
So please try. Please stay safe out there as you do your things. And please use the knowledge that you're loved and cared for by me and many others in my world to grant yourself the necessary courage to make good, kind, and loving choices. I'll be over here in the meantime, waiting for you, wishing for good things upon you, cheering you on, and singing little songs for you until you come back home to us all, as I always do.
I'll write some more to you tomorrow.
Your friend, Lumine

ask game ❤️‍🔥 and 🧚‍♀️
❤️‍🔥 what character do you simp for most often
lmaoooo well I guess it would have to be the blond idiot because I always end up making Harry a fucking simp in my fics so I guess that says something about me psychologically?
But it's probably Charlie. Whenever he comes up as a background character in the story I froth at the mouth
🧚‍♀️ favorite characters of all time
Look. I like male characters who have been through trauma, it just happens that way. Does this also probably say something about me psychologically? Yes. (though I tend to be attracted to golden retriever people irl so someone psychoanalyse me, I probably need it)
Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter, Dean Winchester, Derek Hale, Stiles Stilinski, and Homer from Tomorrow When the War Began (rogue pick). Also Ellie from TWtWB.
I'm sure there's more and I'll feel like I've sinned for forgetting them

Comics this week?
Superman #12 - The good: this was a nice showcase of Superman using his brains to win. He's studied kryptonite (because of course he has), and he came up with the plan to use Parasite to absorb all the excess Kryptonite. I liked those two moments. The bad: this whole arc has had some decent moments here and there but the Chained wasn't an interesting bad guy, and while I enjoyed Pharm and Graft I liked them more as mastermind villains upgrading classic Superman Rogues. They're not strong enough to carry an arc on their own, and Letica barely showed up before immediately turning bad. All of that made for an ending that was simply "ok".
Still Williamson managed to tie what happened to Brainiac, perhaps House of Brainiac can give what we've seen more weight. Either way I'm glad the arc is over and now we can get to the big story we've been building to since the run began. Williamson has a bad track record with "big events", but I did enjoy Finish Line as the finale to his Flash run, hopefully that kind of storytelling is what he's aiming to do here for Brainiac.
World's Finest #25 - What's with the Superbooks giving us the best Joker takes in ages? Finally getting a Joker who is funny instead of merely a clown serial killer. Downside is Waid's done better work with Lex elsewhere and this felt pretty cliché. The DCAU influence is strong here and the beats felt predictable: Lex underestimates Joker, Joker shows that he's far more evil and depraved than Lex with what he wants to wish for, but at least Lex managed to banish Joker back to Arkham at the last minute. It's an inferior riff on Rock of Ages, and next up is a 5D imp arc which I'm expecting to be another strike out.
GL: War Journal #7 - Byla shows up! All the connective tissue to PKJ's Action run has me excited. PKJ is really trying to build up this big cosmic epic about the First World across all of his books, it reminds me of what Al Ewing has tried to do over at Marvel. I really want to see PKJ get JL one day so he can spotlight what he's been building. Otherwise I'm glad that Steel and the others have qualms about what Ellie is doing. And hey, a chance to see Guy bro it up with John? Hell yeah, let's pair those two together for an issue.
Wonder Woman #7 - Fun issue! Not quite on the same level as his Batman/Superman issue, but the banter between Clark and Diana made me chuckle at several points (Supperman, getting their nails done, Diana asking Clark for help with the parking ticket at the end, etc). Batman regifting the diamond at the end and keeping the photos was expected but still a nice touch. Usually Diana is underserved when it comes to interactions with her fellow Trinity members, this was a nice showcase of Clark and Diana's friendship. Strikes me that King's Superman reminds me of how MAWS approaches the character in that he's a huge dork at heart. Was disappointed but not surprised that King brought up the American Way, I'm telling you DC if you want to replace that part of Superman's motto you have to commit to forcing everyone to use "A Better Tomorrow", even the golden boy.
JLvGvK #6 - RIP Guy I guess? Tried to go for the Injustice shock value but it didn't connect. I was more baffled than wowed. Supes just... wakes up I guess? What was the point of keeping him on the bench for this long when he simply wakes up? Hopefully the final fight delivers. For the most part I've turned my brain off and had a good time, but this issue kept having the dumb plot get in the way of the kaiju fights.
Fantastic Four #18 - Franklin getting his Kwisatz Haderach on! Clever writing that respects the continuity of what Slott established, while restoring Franklin's powers but not to the point he nullifies any sense of danger. Repressing his powers so he can have a relatively normal childhood makes sense and North weaves in past continuity to justify it well.

📝 + tomorrow when the war began. I need to know for reasons
Oh this is another thing that I've never written anyone from but here's my picks. I'll just stick to movie characters for now but
Tumblr media
Kevin? I love Kevin. Kevin and Corrie? Don't talk to me I WILL cry. He is going through so much grief like baby you need help.
Tumblr media
I just think Homer's interesting, from weird drunk stoner to competent leader in a blink of an eye? I just think his head would be interesting to write.
Tumblr media
Lee needs anger management. But I support his right to commit wrongs.
Tumblr media
I just want Fi and Ellie to kiss.

top 5 favorite characters? (from any show/movie/book)
Only FIVE?? This is cruel, and I simply cannot narrow it down to five. I refuse.
Here are eight, with some attempt at ranking them. I feel like I’ve betrayed another twenty-thirty (at least) characters by leaving them off this list though.
1. Cristina Yang (TV - Grey’s Anatomy)
“If You Want Crappy Things To Stop Happening To You, Then Stop Accepting Crap And Demand Something More.”
Honestly I wish I could say there was more of a competition for number one, but the bottom line is Cristina Yang will always be the first person who springs to mind whenever anyone asks me who my favourite fictional character is. She’s witty, intelligent, independent, and unapologetically ambitious, because she knows what she deserves and she’s not afraid to go for it.  I’ve always felt guilty for being intelligent because I grew up being told that being a smart girl wasn’t always a good thing, and as such have a tendency to hold back in certain situations to make others more comfortable. Cristina Yang  reminds me every day not to feel bad for taking up space. You won’t always be liked for being yourself, but the right people will LOVE you for it, so screw everyone else and go get what you want. Whatever that may be.
(Also, Sandra Oh is brilliant. End of story).
Tumblr media
2. Santana Lopez (TV - Glee)
“The only straight I am is straight-up bitch”
I mean... you follow me on here right? This feels like an obvious one. Glee has sooooo many shortcomings, and I'm not going to pretend Santana Lopez didn’t suffer the occasional spell of character regression because the writing team didn’t always know how to stop real life from seeping into their scripts (looking at you season 6 rant). She’s a bitch, sure, but she’s also a hardcore friend and went through a journey a lot of us could relate to growing up. She’s the person I first saw myself in as a teen, and yeah maybe I ignored that for several years because it was scary and I didn’t want to think about it yet, but guess what? She got through it all, even the tough stuff, and grew into a better person because of it. Also, she was given a happy ending. I dare you to find that elsewhere for a wlw on television, because it’s truly hard to come by even today when we’ve supposedly made a heap of progress.
And let’s not pretend Naya isn’t 95% to thank for Santana Lopez. It sucks that she’s gone, but make her proud. Be yourself. Always.
Tumblr media
3. Ellie Linton (Book/Movie - Tomorrow When the War Began)
"I can’t tell if what I did was right or wrong. I’d like to think it was to save my friends, or as part of some noble crusade to save my country. Really, it just comes down to the fact that I valued my life over theirs, doesn’t it?"
What’s that? A strong female character in a YA novel who doesn’t get stuck in a messy love triangle and whose key conflict instead revolves around the trauma she suffers after leading the charge in a literal war for the freedom of her country? You’ve gotta be kidding, right?
I loved the TWTWB books growing up, and I still re-read them from time to time. Ellie was the hero of the story, but she was also deeply flawed and made a tonne of mistakes that the book didn’t shy away from addressing. This series, and particularly this character, are the reason I wanted to become a writer. It was the first work I can remember stumbling across that showed me a woman’s story could be about something other than the man she was in love with, and if people aren’t going to create more stories like that for me to read then I guess I’ll just have to do it myself.
Tumblr media
4. Raven Reyes (TV - The 100)
"Nothing Like A Little Pain To Remind You You're Alive."
I hate that I’ve included a character from t100 on this list because the thought of crediting those guys for ever creating anything good after what they did from 3x07 onwards makes me angry. BUT it’s not every day you get a smart, sassy, disabled character in a post-apocalyptic world who still kicks ass and makes it through the day, and gets to be affected (but NOT defined) by her impairments. I started watching this show around the same time I began dealing with some serious (and scary) medical problems as a teen, and seeing someone like Raven on TV every week was literally the difference between life and death some days. Representation matters, even if the writers screw you over with it later on.
(Also, s7 was a shitshow but my gal got to be the one who saved the human race at the end of the day when one lead died and the other one failed. You’re doing amazing sweetie!)
Tumblr media
5. Rizzo (Movie/Musical - Grease)
“Some people are so touchy.”
What can I say? She’s tough, she’s darkly witty, she’s vulnerable but self-reliant, and probably responsible for shaping about 50% of my sense of humour and getting me into a hell of a lot of trouble growing up. Also, Stockard Channing’s performance of ‘There are Worse Things I Could Do’ will never fail to make me feel things, even when nothing else does.
Tumblr media
Honourable Mentions:
1. JJ (TV - Criminal Minds)
Look, she is on here purely for being my bi awakening, but also this scene - which sums up everything I love about her, from her strength to her compassion to her ability to just damn-well tell it like it is.
Tumblr media
2. Quinn King (TV - Unreal)
I simply want to be her when I grow up. For better or worse. Watch this show if you haven’t already.
Tumblr media
3. Sophia Petrillo (TV - The Golden Girls)
The woman is responsible for the other 50% of my sense of humour. I have no regrets.
