Kymaer Kin Type: Beeturum
There are times when an Atriarch must find new land when under attack, but this is a difficult task ahead since they cannot carry so many of their brood. So, they birth on who can.
Beeturum's D.N.A mostly consists of crabs, beetles and elephants. The crabs parts making their shell tough to break and makes them both aquatic and land based. Beetle traits allow them to grow wings if they need them. The elephant traits gives them their size and strength.
They can live in both Skies, oceans and land if they need to. They main task is to carry other Kymaer away from danger to new safer lands. Once their task is complete, they empty their cargo in the safe zone.
They are incredible friendly and enjoy playing with whatever wants to play with them. Their gentle nature is also well documented. They will give shelter to any creature if they need it.

i love how things that went unsaid in all the other arcs, the things that if said wouldve changed so much, was finally just...said. acknowledged. the love and need to protect and the confusion and anger and trying to stick it out with each other even when feeling so alone, always coming back... it stopped the cycle, and i am so glad for it.

ngl van helsing and mina's relarionship is very very dear to me and does in fact have me in chokehold
we're expecting jack seward to be van helsing's protégé, them being academics and jack having been vh's student. and yet jack is the least flexible in his beliefs. meanwhile mina, despite not having any relevant education, demonstrates all qualities that van helsing seeks and respects!
she's anticipating the need for a record and typewrites her and jonathan's diaries in advance, plus later continues her task to make sure they all have access to the least available bit of information (to which van helsing refers a LOT closer to the end)
she's quick-minded and can surprise the old professor (cue the 'teehee sure read my diaries oops it's in shorthand' scene, after which vh basically goes I AM ADOPTING HER, teary-eyed)
she has a chronical case of understanding him instantly. parallel the scene with jack 'WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN ELEPHANTS LIVE LONGER' seward and the scene with mina 'SAY NO MORE I GOT YOU DRACULA IS FLEEING BACK HOME' harker, it's just so funny to me
van helsing constantly saying how he needs jack to have an open mind, yet here's madam mina, self-educated on the horrors in castle dracula, asking van helsing himself to keep an open mind as he reads the diaries!
in van helsing's memorandum he says she obediently does anything he asks. she even gets up to leave the wafer circle, although she can't. like.... she knows that van helsing is testing her, and helps willingly. she feels the changes in herself, and she allows her friend to carry out his research too.
they are SO quick to follow each other's thoughts! mina discovers hypnotism as means to speak freely and calls for van helsing right away. and he gets her without missing a beat
don't even get me started on every time mina saves the situation and van helsing muttering 'wonderful woman!' under his breath. he cares for her so deeply it's insane and heart-warming and bittersweet
and that damn november 4 entry? van helsing being afraid, afraid, afraid! of mina and the changes she undergoes. yet he continues to care about his friend. huge thanks to @re-dracula for bringing each emotion to life in such a vivid manner
in conclusion, mina harker is van helsing's spiritual kin and i am not normal about it

Throughout history, there has been only one other man this feral about his babygirl
Tomorrow, I will act so that Arjuna, Kunti’s son, can kill Jayadratha before the sun has set. My wives, my friends, my relatives and my kin are not dearer to me than Arjuna, Kunti’s son, is. O Daruka! Bereft of Arjuna, I will not be able to look at the world even for an instant. Therefore, it shall not be that way. For Arjuna’s sake, I will slay the standard-bearers of the enemy, with their horses, chariots and elephants, with Karna and Suyodhana. In the great battle tomorrow, let the three worlds witness my valour. O Daruka! For Dhananjaya’s sake, I will show my valour in the battle. O Daruka! Tomorrow, I will rout thousands of kings and hundreds of princes, with their horses, elephants and chariots. Tomorrow, you will witness the army of kings shattered by my chakra. For the sake of Pandava, I will angrily bring them down in the battle. Tomorrow, the gods, the gandharvas, the pishachas, the serpents, the rakshasas and all the worlds will know me as Savyasachi’s well-wisher. He who hates him, hates me too. He who follows him, follows me too. Use your intelligence to comprehend that Arjuna is half of my body.

Spectember D7: Kin Selection
Tumblr media
After 15 million years the fluvial regions of central Africa have been changing in magnitude but their ecosystem remained similar to the time humans once stood on their shores, and as they have been gone for a long time their inhabitants kept evolving, no much of the fauna to the exception of the forest dwelling ones have changed, new species split from the older ones and other replaced previous ones. Fishes have been as fluid in change as the river they live, and so some have always tried to adapt with new strategies for their own survival or even their relatives.
In this case remarks a species of elephantfish (Mormyridae), a group of very diverse electric fishes from Africa characterized by their developed brains compared to other bony fishes, they have been experiencing further specialization with their intelligence that has changed their survival strategies, The Caretaker elephant-fish (Gnathoscalprum comifamilis) is a sample species of it, descendant of the Peters's elephant-nose fish (Gnathonemus petersii) it differs little of their ancestors morphologically with a average length of 25 cm long, though it has a more robust pointy chin and a larger tail electric muscle that help them to perceive their environment more than other species, although this is not what makes them stranger compared to other species.
The thing that differs them is their social lifestyle, they gather in small groups composed by close familiars, sisters, brothers and often 2 or 4 parents that are the dominant of the group with dozens of younger individuals per breeding season, they recognize each other thanks to a specific learned systems of electric pings each of the familiar learn and memorize, to recognize each other, this varying of family and family and anybody outside of them are aggressively kick out. The group often live upon caring for them and the members often scattering the bottom for food or shelter, normally the brothers and sisters are proactively caring for the minor and main reproductive couple even risking their life, even if that means they likely will never reproduce with other, this behavior imprints on other of the same family and can be carried by the descendants of the reproductive couple which can be passed to another generation. A way to avoid inbreeding often go with lonely individuals of other families that managed to leave their group, that can properly unite successfully with other family if they are capable to prove they can benefit them, or if they straight up kill one of the main couples, which from there will select another mate of the same family and kick the original one that survive, this helping them to avoid inbreeding.

Pathologic and the Town's Russianness: Intro
I've noticed, it's common enough to see talk about, say, Russian colonization of the Steppe among the Pathologic community; or the language everyone speaks in the game being in-character Russian, or any similar ideas that equate the Capital-centered civilization that founded the Town-on-Gorkhon with the historical Russian Empire.
But the funniest bit - as for me, - that for a Russian, most of Pathologic is purposefully coded by Ice Pick Lodge to feel generic Eastern European, if not even European in general. Let me go with a brief rundown.
So brief, in fact, that this post will only serve as an introduction, and not to make it overly long, I'll write up more in separate ones.
So, the elephant in the room: Pathologic is not meant to be perfectly realistic.
The first thing that needs to be said here is: of course the Town on Gorkhon is not meant to be 100% lifelike. If you will, it is a realist painting, rather than a photography. Very visibly theatrical scenery rather than a faithful depiction of the town. It is obviously done on purpose, too: partly for gameplay reasons, party as artistic choice.
Some things had to be sacrificed for the overarching plot to make sense, so, let's call them logical limitations.
The Town is relatively large (10k+ citizens at the very least), and it's economically important, so realistically, of course it would have a hospital and multiple medical professionals. Checkhov, for instance, managed such a clinic in Zvenigorod in his youth, and that town barely had three thousand souls then. But of course nothing like that can be present in the Town as it would entirely undermine the game's premise of a handful healers fighting against the Plague and their own prejudice against each other.
Similarly, there can't be telephones (while by the rough time period of the game, somewhere in the 1910s to 1920s, there were already first automated exchanges introduced), nor electrical or even optical telegraph to connect the Town to the larger world (a technology about a century old by then), for obvious reasons.
Thematic limitations are necessary for the game's themes to work better.
For instance, Saburov is a commandant, not just a governor (and I believe he's refered to as such in the English translation of P1). But where's his command? He doesn't seem to have a single soldier under his leadership, just the ragtag town militia. Why's that? Because the game has to make the uniformed Army, when it arrives, feel utterly alien to the Town, and incompatible with it.
As another example, the only lifestock the Kin seem to be herding appears to be cattle. That's an economical absurdity for nomadic pastoralists. With no sheep, no goats, no camels, not even horses, they can't establish a sustaintable subsistence economy. But of course with the game so focused on cows, both in its visual language, the Kin mythology, and other aspects of storytelling, presenting cattle to be just one of the many species the Kin herd would reduce the impact of the game's message.
To continue in that vein, the Town interacting with the Steppe is one the game's major themes: so overgrazing by those huge herds the Bull Enterprise with its thousands of employees should be slaughtering can not be shown; and the cultivated fields (which a steppe near a major water source readily allows) that should surround the Town cannot be, either.
Then, there are the tech limitations: with seven thousand workers (as Aglaya estimates the losses in the Termitary), the Bull Enterprise must be slaughtering insane numbers of cattle every day; of course all these herds cannot be shown, just like the thousands of ordinary citizens doing the ordinary jobs that keep the Town running cannot be visible.
Finally, some of the Town's unfinished, sketch-like nature is pure artistic choice. I think the perfect example is the table lamp in Isidor Burakh's room - unplugged, yet shining brightly. I don't think it's Ice Pick simply being careless: it is more like they're blinking at us, saying "remember all of this is not real".
If anything, I must say I have an issue with some of the choices made, and particularly with the Kin dress. Some of the Town characters are fine to wear rags (such as Clara or Murky), but why do the Kin, universally (other than, perhaps, Taya, their supreme leader)? Compare their crude dress with its huge stitches to what was worn in Middle Asia at the time in reality. Even beggars wore much better than a highly respected figure like Aspity. Sure, those are to be taken as essentially theater costumes, but as far as culture-specific costumes go, they are wildly unflattening.
But the important thing to take from this part: some of the simplifications and the generalizations are necessary for the game to work, on many levels. They're not about representing a particular culture well, just about making a good game.

I NEED YOUR EXPERT ADVICE. I'm making Hermit designs but I've been kin-assigning them animals because as a furry artist I cannot draw humans. I've been choosing animals based on personality/behavior and not just looks. Do you have any ideas for Joel, Impulse, or Skizz? Gem too if you've got one, I don't want to stick with Just fandom-popular animals (deer/fox/etc). IF U DO NOT HAVE THOUGHTS THAT IS OKAY TOO, TY FOR READING ANYWAYS <3
Oughh this is a good question uhh I don't have many nor the best ideas probably by a long shot but if it can even just help spark some ideas, here's some!!
Joel - Donkey honestly! Hot-headed, stubborn, loud little things. To me, Joel is a heavy hitter not caring for stealth etc and makes himself known. Think of how farmers often get a solitary donkey to protect their livestock because of the sheer ferocity of those territorial things. Donkeys may often be associated with undesirable traits but they kick and bite like pawns of hell, just because they can, not even because its necessary to defend themselves. They will kick to kill and they'll make sure of it. Kinda Joel coated to me tbh, even if Joel isn't always great at getting that kind of job done. Just from the way donkeys are often perceived though I think it fits.. For pretty much the same reasons also, a rooster?? Significantly less deadly (accurate to Joel) but still capable of great malice!! And obviously often seen as very prideful much like Joel
Impulse - this came up in my dinosaur assigning, but bull! Impulse is usually depicted as a bulky guy with a strong build and horns, like a bull! The bull has a bunch of symbolism thrown at it but that includes stuff like strength and loyalty, attributes I think are often assigned to Impulse. And at points, Impulse does showcase these, but he can also become hot headed, arrogant, and he holds grudges like hell. These aren't traits you usually think of with a bull though, lest you think of bull-fighting. I think it fits Impulse because on surface level, and from a lot of people's understanding, you don't think of these less desirable traits. He also seems to think rather highly of himself and doesn't often deem it necessary to prove his loyalty etc when others doubt him. Bulls aren't as hot-headed as the awful bull-fighting sport might have you believe but they are still rather easily aggravated! A lot of animals can "hold grudges" for a prolonged time, but elephants and camels especially, so, something fitting in that too (especially with those once again being bulky large animals. The camel I guess is more lanky than bulky though...)
Skizz - Of course Skizz just makes me think of lovely birds when I try and assign something to him. Immediate thought was swan but... Swans are ferocious fighters and Skizz is... not Mayhaps an albatross instead if we stick with birds - they're also birds known for their love and conviction, but also the fun rumor that killing an albatross will leave you cursed. That kind of makes me think of Skizz's "I only kill those who deserve it" mindset. Harm him and he will (try to) get back at you Maybe even a crow, for how social they are but also how capable of remembering faces If we want non-birds, I think any animal that's passive and chill but valiantly protective of their own could fit? Or because Skizz is kind of always friendly, could lean into that and assign him the capybara, which I can't imagine is much good at fighting much like him. Or maybe an animal that has an unimpressive and maybe laughable defense mechanism to a human, like the way raccoons or red pandas stand on their hind legs to try and threaten you, the same way Skizz on his red life will dye his hair red or wear a red speedo
Gem - Surprisingly tough... I love the usual deer themeing with her so I automatically wanna assign her another herbivore that is thought to be very passive or docile but one that could very much fuck you up. Honestly... I know it doesn't make for good hybrid material at all but..hippos... just for how fucking murderous they are. Maybe a good ol horse instead? Because horses especially are widely domesticated and people very often make the mistake of getting too close etc only to get kicked in the face. Gem doesn't listen to anyone man she's her own boss!! A cow works for similar reasons. Deadly beasts even if often seen as totally docile... I love this kind of idea because it draws so much attention to how spearheaded Gem is But I could also imagine her as a predator like an ocelot etc. She very much acts like one I think. That's why it's so tough, so much stuff fits her!!

Continuing the trend of “Planescape books I weirdly skipped posting about,” here’s the second Monstrous Compendium for the campaign setting (1995). Have no clue why I stopped with the first volume, but I did. And that meant overlooking an entire book of @DiTerlizzi illustrations, which is probably a crime.
The whole book is pretty great. Tony takes a crack at the astral dreadnought, for one. We also get stats for the astral dreadnought, for another (despite featuring on the cover of Manual of the Planes, it mostly remained a mystery until now). There’s walking brain monsters, animal people, flying elephants, those weird porcupine-haired guys from Highlander II: The Quickening. Razorvine gets an official entry. Retrievers are retrieved. The Arcane are imported from Spelljammer, as are an odd sort of Neogi-kin.
Many of the monsters feel less like singular encounters than they do jumping off points for whole adventures, or even campaigns. The Prolonger, for instance — a sort of soul-eating, immortality obsessed pseudo-undead — is a personal favorite and made for an excellent serial killer nemesis in my own homebrew campaign. Good monsters are fuel, not foes!
